Description

1. Area

[0001] Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a caliper brake, and more particularly to a caliper brake with improved durability by minimizing structural deformation. 2. Description of the state of the art

[0002] A vehicle necessarily has a braking system for braking. A typical braking system is a caliper brake. The caliper brake consists of a disc that rotates along with the vehicle's wheel, a piston mounted on the side of the disc and actuated hydraulically or electronically, and brake pads.

[0003] When the driver presses the brake pedal, the piston moves inward and the brake pads pull the disc inward to create a frictional force that is used as braking force.

[0004] Caliper brakes are generally equipped with a piston seal made of an elastic material. The piston seal exerts an elastic restoring force on the piston, allowing it to return to its original position after the movement has ended.

[0005] The piston seal is positioned near a pad to seal a space between the piston and a cylinder within a caliper housing, thereby limiting the flow of brake fluid. Therefore, the piston seal is positioned away from the piston's center of gravity.

[0006] In particular, when the vehicle maintains a driving or braking state, the piston seal and the center of gravity of the piston are kept at a certain distance from each other. Therefore, an external force of the same direction and magnitude, generated by the weight of the piston, constantly acts on the piston seal.

[0007] However, since the piston seal is made of an elastic material, its durability is low. Therefore, the piston seal according to the current technology is only slightly deformed by the external force generated by the weight of the piston. The deformed piston seal does not come into close contact with the piston, so the piston seal does not exert the full elastic restoring force on the piston.

[0008] Accordingly, a method is needed to minimize the deformation of the brake caliper piston seal caused by the weight of the piston.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0031] Examples of the present disclosure will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. The following examples are intended to fully convey the spirit of the present disclosure to those skilled in the art. The present disclosure is not limited to the examples shown herein and may be embodied in other forms. The drawings are not intended to limit the scope of the present disclosure in any way, and components may be exaggerated for clarity.

[0032] Fig. 1 is a cross-sectional view showing the interior of a caliper brake in the prior art.

[0033] Referring to Fig. 1, the prior art caliper brake comprises a carrier (not shown), a caliper housing 100, a piston 200, a sealing groove 300, and a sealing element 400.

[0034] Generally, a caliper brake is equipped with a disc that rotates along with a vehicle wheel and a pair of inner brake pads on either side of the disc. A brake pad, which directly contacts the disc, is firmly mounted on the pad plate.

[0035] The bracket (not shown) is installed firmly with screws or similar to a load-bearing structure such as a vehicle body.

[0036] The pair of facing plates can be mounted on the support (not shown) so that they can move forward towards the disc and backward away from it.

[0037] The brake caliper housing 100 forms the outer surface of the brake caliper. The brake caliper housing 100 is slidably mounted on the carrier (not shown) and includes a cylinder that can accommodate the piston 200.

[0038] Piston 200 is installed in the cylinder of the caliper housing 100 and can be moved back and forth hydraulically or electronically. When the vehicle brakes, piston 200 moves forward, causing the pad plate to move forward. The forward movement of the pad plate causes the brake pad to rub against the disc. When the brake is released and the vehicle moves away, piston 200 moves back, and the brake pad plate also moves back. Accordingly, the brake pad is spaced from the disc.

[0039] The seal groove 300 is formed to be recessed into an inner surface of the cylinder, and the seal member 400 is received in the seal groove 300 and provided in close contact with an outer surface of the piston 200. Therefore, the seal member 400 seals a space between the piston 200 and the cylinder and simultaneously performs a return action to return the piston 200, which has moved forward, to its original position when the vehicle's brake is released.

[0040] In the present disclosure, terms such as the inner surface of the cylinder and the outer surface of the piston 200 are used. When the piston 200 is installed in the cylinder, the inner side surface of the cylinder, which is near the piston 200, is referred to as the inner surface of the cylinder, and the outer side surface of the piston 200, which is near the inner surface of the cylinder, is referred to as the outer surface of the piston 200.

[0041] In particular, in the sealing member 400 made of an elastic member such as rubber, deformation occurs when the piston 200 moves forward, and when the pressure applied to move the piston 200 forward is released, the piston 200 moves back while the deformed sealing member 400 is restored.

[0042] The sealing element 400 is located on the outer surface of the piston 200 and is arranged near the lining plate. Therefore, the sealing element 400 is provided so that it is spaced from the center of gravity G of the piston 200. Accordingly, the piston 200 exerts a torque on the sealing element 400. In particular, when the vehicle maintains a braking or driving state, an external force of the same direction and magnitude continuously acts on the sealing element 400.

[0043] The sealing member 400 is made of an elastic material and has relatively low strength compared to the piston 200. Therefore, in the prior art, the sealing member 400 is easily deformed by an external force generated by the weight of the piston 200. An elastic restoring force exerted by the sealing member 400 on the piston 200 is fully generated when the sealing member 400 is in close contact with the outer surface of the piston 200, but the deformed sealing member 400 does not come into close contact with the outer surface of the piston 200, which may pose a problem. That is, in the prior art, the sealing member 400 is deformed by the piston 200 and does not fully generate an elastic restoring force.

[0044] Examples according to the present disclosure include a support member 500 to solve the above-mentioned problem. The support member 500 minimizes the external force acting on the sealing elements 400 due to the weight of the piston 200, thus preventing deformation of the sealing elements 400.

[0045] Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view showing the interior of a caliper brake according to a first example of the present disclosure in side view.

[0046] As in Fig. 2, the caliper brake according to the first example of the present disclosure includes a support member 500 and a support member groove 600.

[0047] The carrier (not shown), the caliper housing 100, the piston 200, the seal groove 300, and the seal member 400 of the first example of the present disclosure described below are the same as those of the caliper brake in the related art, and therefore, their descriptions are omitted to avoid repetition of the content.

[0048] The support element 500 is located between the inner surface of the cylinder and the outer surface of the piston 200.

[0049] The support element 500 may be arranged near the center of gravity G of the piston 200 and preferably on an extension line that is perpendicular to the axial direction of the piston 200 and passes through the center of gravity G of the piston 200.

[0050] The support member 500 may be provided in the form of a gasket made of an elastic material, and the support member 500 may be provided in an annular shape along the outer surface of the piston 200. One surface of the support member 500 may be fixed to the cylinder, and the other surface may be in close contact with the outer surface of the piston 200.

[0051] The support member groove 600 may be formed to be recessed into the inner surface of the cylinder so that the support member 500 can be received therein. In a state where the support member groove 600 is provided, the support member 500 may be received in the support member groove 600, and one surface of the support member 500 may be fixed to the inner surface of the cylinder, and the other surface may be in close contact with the outer surface of the piston 200. When the support member 500 is received in the support member groove 600, there is an advantage in improving the fastening force between the support member 500 and the cylinder.

[0052] A plurality of support members 500 may be provided. The plurality of support members 500 may be spaced apart from each other along the axial direction of the piston 200 and, at the same time, arranged symmetrically with respect to the center of gravity G of the piston 200. Therefore, the support members 500 effectively support the piston 200, and the external force acting on the seal member 400 due to the weight of the piston 200 is reduced. That is, the support member 500 reduces the deformation of the seal member 400 due to the weight of the piston 200, and by reducing the deformation of the seal member 400, the durability of the caliper brake is improved.

[0053] Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view showing the interior of a caliper brake according to a second example of the present disclosure when viewed from the side, and Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view showing the interior of the caliper brake according to the second example of the present disclosure when viewed from the front.

[0054] The caliper brake according to the second example of the present disclosure to be described below is the same as the caliper brake according to the first example described above except for parts to be additionally described, and therefore descriptions of the same parts are omitted to avoid duplicate content.

[0055] Referring to the Fig. 3 and Fig. 4, in the second example of the present disclosure, unlike the first example, the support member groove 600 is not provided, and another support member 500 is provided.

[0056] Specifically, according to the second example of the present disclosure, the support member 500 has one surface fixed to the outer surface of the piston 200, while the other surface is in close contact with the inner surface of the cylinder. In this case, the support member 500 is fixed to the outer surface of the piston 200, and therefore, to improve the fixing force between the support member 500 and the piston 200, a separate support member groove 600 formed to be recessed in the outer surface of the piston 200 may be provided to receive the support member 500.

[0057] The support member 500 may be shaped so that its center protrudes outward from one edge so that a portion of the other surface is in contact with the inner surface of the cylinder. Therefore, the support member 500 can minimize the degree of inclination of the piston 200 while simultaneously minimizing the resistance exerted by the support member 500 on the forward and backward movement of the piston 200.

[0058] A plurality of support elements 500 may be provided. The plurality of support elements 500 may be arranged spaced apart from one another around an outer circumferential surface of the piston 200, and the plurality of support elements 500 may be arranged radially symmetrically with respect to an axis of the piston 200, as shown in Fig. 4. Therefore, compared with the annular support member 500 in the first example of the present disclosure, the resistance exerted on the piston 200 moving forward and backward can be minimized.

[0059] Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view showing the interior of a caliper brake according to a third example of the present disclosure, viewed from the side, and Fig. 6 is a side view showing one side of the caliper brake according to the third example of the present disclosure.

[0060] The caliper brake according to the third example of the present disclosure to be described below is the same as the caliper brake according to the first example described above except for parts to be additionally described, and therefore descriptions of the same parts are omitted to avoid duplicate content.

[0061] Referring to the Fig. 5 and Fig. 6, in the third example of the present disclosure, unlike the first example, the support member groove 600 is not provided and another support member 500 is provided.

[0062] Specifically, according to the third example of the present disclosure, the support member 500 is provided in the shape of a rib. In other words, the support member 500 has the shape of a rib extending in the axial direction of the piston 200. Therefore, compared with the support member 500 provided in the shape of the gasket made of the elastic material in the first and second examples of the present disclosure, the third example has a disadvantage in that no elastic restoring force is exerted on the piston 200 together with the sealing member 400. However, it is easy to fix the support member 500 provided in the shape of the rib to the piston 200 or the cylinder, and the support member 500 provided in the shape of the rib supports the piston 200 over a relatively long portion in the axial direction, so it is possible to more effectively reduce the external force acting on the sealing member 400 due to the weight of the piston 200.

[0063] The support element 500, which has the shape of a rib, can be made of a lightweight material.

[0064] The rib-shaped support member 500 may be round, so that a surface in contact with the cylinder partially contacts the cylinder. Accordingly, the support member 500 can ensure smooth bidirectional movement of the piston 200 while supporting the piston 200. That is, the rib-shaped support member 500 can function as a contact bearing.

[0065] A plurality of support elements 500 may be provided, wherein the support elements 500 may be provided as a mixture of the shape of the seal made of an elastic material and the shape of the rib extending in the axial direction of the piston 200. When such support elements 500 are provided, the support element 500 in the shape of the seal and the support element 500 in the shape of the rib may be arranged alternately. Accordingly, the support element 500 may have the advantages of both the seal shape and the rib shape.

[0066] The caliper brake according to an example of the present disclosure having such a configuration includes the support member 500, and the support member 500 is provided near the center of gravity G of the piston 200, so that the external force acting on the seal member 400 with weak durability due to the weight of the piston 200 can be minimized, and accordingly, the deformation of the seal member 400 can be minimized. Furthermore, the support member 500 is configured in the shape of a gasket or a rib, which can provide another advantage. The seal member 400, which cannot be deformed, can not only exert a full elastic restoring force on the piston 200 but also improve the durability of the caliper, thereby increasing the marketability and competitiveness of a vehicle.

[0067] As can be seen from the above description, a caliper brake according to an embodiment of the present disclosure has improved durability.

[0068] The caliper brake according to an embodiment of the present disclosure prevents deformation of a sealing member.

[0069] The caliper brake according to an embodiment of the present disclosure allows the sealing member to exert a full elastic restoring force on a piston.

[0070] The caliper brake according to an embodiment of the present disclosure improves the marketability and competitiveness of a vehicle.
