Existing systems for spiral-winding three-dimensional upholstery material from railway-shaped starting materials are inefficient, unsafe, and difficult to use, particularly due to complex handling and the need for frequent machine activation, which reduces productivity and increases the risk of injury.
A wrap device with a reel equipped with deflectors arranged symmetrically around an axis of rotation, allowing for safe and easy wrapping of the upholstery material into a spiral shape, which can be adapted for various surface shapes and sizes, including rectangular and square formats, and includes a housing for protection and efficient material handling.
The solution enables faster, safer, and more efficient wrapping of upholstery material, reducing the number of units needed and the time required for packing, while ensuring worker safety and improving the adaptability to non-circular surfaces.
Description
[0001] The invention relates to a winding device for spirally winding a three-dimensional cushioning material produced by a cushioning converting machine from a web-shaped starting material, in particular a roll or a fanfold stack, for example made of paper. The invention also relates to a cushioning winding system comprising a winding device and a cushioning converting machine for producing the cushioning material from a web-shaped starting material.
[0002] Machines for producing a three-dimensional cushioning material from a web-shaped starting material, for example from paper, are known, for example, from DE 10 2008 039 617 A1 or EP 2 711168 B1.
[0003] In the cushioning converting machine according to DE 10 2008 039 617 A1, a hollow paper web roll serves as the starting material. From the inside of the roll, the paper web is drawn into a spiral tube by a motorized conveying and converting device. As the paper web is conveyed, the conveying and converting rollers of the converting device introduce a peak-and-valley profile into the spiral paper web tube through their engagement area. In this way, they create a stable, three-dimensional, tubular cushioning material.
[0004] EP 2 711 168 B1 describes a cushioning converting machine whose starting material can be rolled up or provided in the form of a fanfold stack. The paper web is fed into the converting machine from the top side of the stack or the outside of the roll. The paper web has two longitudinal edges extending in the web direction and a central region extending between them, which extends parallel to the longitudinal edges. The right and left longitudinal edge strips are folded over or rolled up, projecting at least partially beyond the central region, so that a crumple cavity extending in the web direction is formed. At least a portion of the central region is fastened along a deformation zone extending in the web direction. To form and fasten the web sections, a pair of embossing rollers is used, which introduces a peak-and-valley profile into the central region and the parts of the side edges lying above it in order to fasten them together.Downstream of the gear pair, a cutter can be provided which separates individual cushion pads from the three-dimensional cushion tube.
[0005] These proven cushioning conversion machines can produce three-dimensional cushioning material tubes or cushions of various lengths. For some applications, it is desirable to cover large surfaces with cushioning material. For example, it may be desired to completely or partially cover the bottom of a container, such as a carton, a box, a wire basket, or the like, with three-dimensional cushioning material in order to transport heavy or delicate goods while resting on the cushioning material. For this purpose, several cushioning cushions can be inserted parallel to one another in the carton to cover its bottom. It is also conceivable to insert cushioning cushions loosely into the carton to cover its bottom. Alternatively, long cushioning cushions can be produced, which are bound into a spiral spiral to cover the bottom of the carton. The use of such cushioning screws reduces the number of cushioning units to be inserted and thus the number of actions that have to be carried out by the packing staff and thus the duration of the packing process, which can result in a higher throughput in the same amount of time.
[0006] WO 99 / 21702 A2 discloses a cushioning conversion machine combined with a winding device. The cushioning conversion device comprises a conversion device for converting a web-like starting material into a three-dimensional cushioning material strip having tubular or cushion-like regions and an embossed central region. The cushioning conversion device discharges the cushioning material strip horizontally from a discharge opening. A beak-like guide is provided at the exit of the cushioning material conversion device, which guides the cushioning material strip horizontally to a winding device. The winding device is equipped with a motor-driven shaft on which a rotary disk is provided, from which two parallel, cylindrical drivers extend. The cylindrical rods, like the shaft, are aligned horizontally with a horizontal orientation perpendicular to the horizontal conveying path of the cushioning material strip. The guide guides the cushioning material strip between the flights. When the turntable is then set in rotation, the flights carry the cushioning material strip along with their rotational movement and wind the cushioning material strip into a spiral-shaped cushioning material spiral. To accommodate the radial expansion of the cushioning material spiral, the beak-like guide is increasingly spread open and can remain in tangential contact with the cushioning material spiral. Once the cushioning material spiral has reached the desired size, it can be separated from the starting material and removed from the winding device. It has been found that this winding device offers virtually no time savings or increase in packing efficiency compared to using a fast cushioning conversion device as described above. This is primarily due to the complicated handling of the winding device. When removing a cushioning material screw from the flights, the inner coils, which are tightly wound around the flights, can stick to them if a user pulls on the outer coils. The user then pulls the outer coils off the inner coils and the screw unwinds. The winding device can only wind one coil at a time, which will generally not have an optimal adaptation to the area to be covered, since cartons generally have square or rectangular, but not circular, bases. The cushioning material can be shaped by the user, or several coils must be placed side by side on a cardboard base. After inserting one coil of cushioning material into a carton, the user must wait for the winding machine to wind the next coil. A more rapid method would be to insert the well-known and commonly used elongated cushioning material pads, which are produced at high speed by the applicant's aforementioned cushioning conversion machines, into the carton. Furthermore, practice has shown that, due to standard occupational safety regulations, packing personnel are only permitted to approach the winding machine when it is safely deactivated, as otherwise there would be a significant risk of injury from the moving parts, in particular the scissor-like guide and the rapidly rotating drivers. In practice, the winding device must therefore be constantly switched on and off, which further reduces the amount of cushion volume produced per unit of time.
[0007] WO 2017 / 070670 A1 discloses a cushioning conversion machine and a generic winding device for spirally winding a three-dimensional cushioning material.
[0008] It is an object of the invention to eliminate the disadvantages of the prior art and, in particular, to provide an improved alternative to a winding device for spirally winding a three-dimensional cushioning material, which can be operated safely, easily, and quickly, preferably even by untrained personnel. This object is achieved by the subject matter of independent claim 1.
[0009] According to the invention, a winding device is provided for spirally winding a three-dimensional cushioning material produced by a cushioning conversion machine from a web-shaped starting material, in particular a roll or a fanfold stack, for example made of paper. The starting material can be a paper material. Preferably, the starting material is recycled paper. Recycled paper consists of at least 50%, at least 60%, or even at least 70% waste paper. Such a starting material is well suited for producing a particularly environmentally friendly cushioning material. The cushioning conversion machine can, for example, be implemented like one of the known cushioning conversion machines described above. The starting material can be provided to the cushioning conversion machine, in particular, as a roll or as a fanfold stack. The web-shaped starting material has a first longitudinal direction or conveying direction, to which the side edges of the starting web material extend parallel. The web width extends transversely to the web length. In particular, the web length is significantly greater than the web width, for example at least 10x or at least 100x greater. The strength or thickness of the starting material, which can be referred to as the sheet thickness, is many times smaller than the web width and the web length. In general, the sheet thickness of a web-shaped starting material, in particular paper, is less than 1 mm, preferably less than 2 / 10 mm. The web width, i.e. the axial roll length or the fanfold stack width, can be between 100 mm and 1,500 mm, in particular between 200 mm and 1,000 mm, preferably between 250 mm and 900 mm.
[0010] For example, the starting material can be a roll whose axial length is at least half its outer diameter and / or whose axial length is at most twice its outer diameter. Preferably, the ratio of axial length to outer diameter of the roll can be greater than 0.75, in particular greater than 1, and / or less than 1.75, in particular 1.5. For example, the ratio of axial length to outer diameter of the roll can be approximately 1.25. Preferably, the inner diameter of the roll in its new state can be less than half the outer diameter. Preferably, the inner diameter in its new state of the roll is greater than 1 cm, preferably greater than 5 cm, more preferably greater than 10 cm, and / or less than 25 cm, preferably less than 20 cm, more preferably less than 17.5 cm. For example, an inner diameter of a new roll can be approximately 16 cm.
[0011] Alternatively, a preferably substantially cuboid-shaped fanfold stack can be provided as the starting material. A cuboid-shaped fanfold stack, in particular, defines a top side and a bottom side, between which the stack height extends (vertically). An individual fanfold stack can have a stack height of 50 mm to 600 mm, in particular 100 mm to 300 mm, preferably 150 mm. An especially cuboid-shaped fanfold stack defines a length (in the output direction) from a front end to a rear end of the stack. An individual fanfold stack can have a length of 100 mm to 400 mm, in particular 250 mm to 350 mm, preferably 280 mm. A particularly cuboid-shaped fanfold stack can have a stack width (transverse to the length or output direction and transverse to the height or vertical direction) that extends between two opposite side surfaces of the fanfold stack.A single fanfold stack can have a stack width of 200 mm to 500 mm, in particular 300 mm to 400 mm, preferably 350 mm. The fanfold stack preferably comprises layers arranged vertically one above the other, whereby, in particular, one stack layer can correspond to a sheet of paper of the paper web. The end faces of the fanfold stack can be formed by the folded edges of adjacent layers of the paper web. The side surfaces can be formed by the lateral edges of the paper web that extend along the paper web.
[0012] Paper suitable as a starting material includes recycled paper, soda kraft paper, and soda mixed paper. Paper starting material can, in particular, have a basis weight of at least 40g / m² and / or at most 140g / m², in particular at least 60g / m² and / or at most 120g / m². A paper starting material can have a sheet thickness between 0.03mm and 0.40mm, in particular at least 0.06mm and / or at most 0.25mm. The starting material can be single-, double-, or multi-ply. In particular, the starting material contains cellulose fibers.
[0013] The upholstery material provided by the upholstery conversion machine, in particular in the form of a cushion or tube, preferably has a width of 5 cm to 50 cm, in particular 10 cm to 30 cm, preferably a width of approximately 15 cm, and / or a length of 15 cm to 300 cm, in particular 30 cm to 150 cm, preferably 35 cm to 75 cm, particularly preferably 40 cm. Upholstery material, such as a upholstery cushion or a upholstery tube, in particular made of paper, preferably waste paper or recycled paper, preferably has a density of between 1 kg / m 3 and 100 kg / m 3 , preferably between 3 kg / m 3 and 30 kg / m 3 , in particular less than 20, preferably less than 10 kg / m 3 , particularly preferably between 5 kg / m 3 and 8 kg / m 3 , for example approximately 6.8 kg / m 3 .
[0014] The winding device according to the invention comprises a reel with at least two drivers or deflectors, such as mandrels, hooks, deflection edges, or the like. The deflectors can be arranged on a boom, for example on a turntable, on a hub, on spokes, or the like, of the reel, preferably symmetrically, in particular mirror-symmetrically and / or rotationally symmetrically. The deflectors of the reel rotate about the reel's axis of rotation. The deflectors can have the same radial distance from the reel's axis of rotation. When performing a rotary movement about the reel's axis of rotation, the deflectors entrain the cushioning material to be wound. As a result, the cushioning material is wound from, for example, a straight tubular shape into, for example, a spiral-shaped snail shape.
[0015] For example, the leading end or front end of the padding material in the conveying direction of the padding material can first be guided or threaded through between at least two deflectors or drivers. A rotational movement of the deflectors about the axis of rotation can have a pulling effect on the padding material fed through the area between the deflectors in the direction of rotation of the reel. When the leading end of the padding material web is pulled along, the reel rotates about the axis of rotation, which is arranged transversely to the padding material to be wound up. The deflectors of the reel carry the padding material along, at least in sections, in the direction of rotation of the reel.
[0016] In a reel with at least two deflectors, a first deflector can be attached to a boom of the reel, opposite a second deflector relative to the rotation axis. The deflectors of the reel rotate in the same direction. One deflector rotates around the rotation axis at a radial distance from the rotation axis. At least in some sections, the rotational movement of the reel around the rotation axis occurs transversely to the conveying direction of the cushioning material to be wound and transversely to the longitudinal direction of the rotation axis.
[0017] Initial gripping of the cushioning material can occur, for example, when two deflectors diametrically opposed to each other with respect to the rotation axis come into contact with the cushioning material on opposite sides of the cushioning material. For example, with at least two deflectors, a first deflector can come into contact with the (left side or) the top side of the starting cushioning material, and a second deflector can come into contact with the (right side or) the underside of the cushioning material. As a result of at least two deflectors or drivers of the reel coming into contact with two opposite sides of the cushioning material, a folding of a front section of the tubular cushioning material can initially occur. For example, contact can initially take place between a leading end of the cushioning material on its (left or) underside and a first deflector, and essentially simultaneously between the (right or) top side of the cushioning material and a point following the front end and a second deflector. The first deflector can be in a clockwise and / or upward movement and the second deflector can be in a clockwise and / or downward movement, so that the front end of the packaging material is folded (e.g. upwards) (while the part of the packaging material located relatively further back is conveyed downwards by the second deflector, for example). After a first rotation of a reel by approximately 180°, beginning when the deflectors come into contact with the cushioning material, contact can take place between the first deflector and the second deflector. The front end of the cushioning material held thereon can be connected to a relatively rearward, trailing portion of the cushioning material. At the same time, the second deflector of the above-mentioned trailing cushioning material section, which lies between the front end and the relatively rearward cushioning section, can now be followed in its rotational movement. At this point, the innermost spiral winding of a cushioning material screw can be formed. As the winding device continues to rotate, additional cushioning material is wound around the front section of the cushioning material web, which has been folded over into a U-shape as described above, thus forming a cushioning spiral.
[0018] According to the invention, the rotation axis of the reel extends in the vertical direction. Preferably, the rotation axis ideally extends vertically. It should be understood that the vertical direction refers to a direction defined by gravity or a direction that is essentially perpendicular to a preferably flat surface of a room, for example, an order-picking hall where a packaging workstation is provided. It should be understood that the extension of the rotation axis can deviate from an ideal extension in the vertical direction and should be at least essentially vertical, for example ±45° relative to the ideal vertical direction, ±30° offset relative to the vertical direction, ±30° offset relative to the vertical direction, ±15° offset relative to the vertical direction, or ±5° offset relative to the vertical direction. The inventive design with a vertical reel rotation axis surprisingly allows numerous design options, which enable a simpler, faster and safer use of a winding device compared to the prior art.
[0019] The reel can comprise more than two deflectors, such as mandrels, hooks, deflection edges, or the like. For example, the reel can comprise three, four, six, eight, or more deflectors or drivers, which can be implemented in particular as mandrels and / or hooks. It is also conceivable for the reel to be equipped with circumferentially extending deflection blades, each forming a deflection edge at its front and rear ends in the direction of rotation. A reel with two deflection blades would therefore have four (two by two) deflection edges, forming deflectors.
[0020] A deflector can be attached to a reel at a radial distance from the rotational axis. Preferably, at least several of the at least two deflectors are arranged at the same radial distance from the rotational axis of the reel. The deflectors can be attached to the reel in a mirror-symmetrical and / or rotationally symmetrical manner. The reel can comprise a boom, such as a turntable, spokes, a hub, or the like.
[0021] According to a preferred embodiment of a winding device, the plurality of at least two or more than two deflectors are arranged distributed around the axis of rotation in such a way that the winding device winds the three-dimensional cushioning material into a cushioning spiral with a non-circular, in particular polygonal, preferably rectangular, circumferential shape. Alternatively or additionally, according to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the winding device can have the plurality of preferably at least two or more than two deflectors distributed around the axis of rotation in such a way that the winding device winds the three-dimensional cushioning material into a cushioning spiral with a radial inner cavity. Preferably, at least two of the more than two deflectors, in particular two of the more than two deflectors each, can be arranged in pairs diametrically opposite one another in a rotationally fixed manner relative to the axis of rotation on a boom of the reel.In particular, the winding device comprises a reel with at least two deflectors or more than two guides for the non-circular spiral winding of a three-dimensional cushioning material and / or for the spiral winding of a toroidal three-dimensional cushioning material, preferably with a radial inner cavity. By using more than two deflectors in a winding device, shapes deviating from a classic worm spiral shape can be wound. In particular, torus-shaped or ring-shaped bodies with a radial inner cavity can be produced. For this purpose, during winding the front end of the cushioning material tube is inserted between at least two deflectors of the reel and carried along by them. As the reel rotates further, the cushioning material following relative to the front end of the cushioning material tube runs along the outer circumference of the reel orthe outside of the deflectors so that the space between the deflectors of the reel (with the exception of the front end of the cushioning material tube) remains essentially free of cushioning material and forms a radial inner cavity. A toroidal cushioning spiral is particularly suitable when a transported item is to be cushioned in the radial direction. For example, a toroidally wound cushioning spiral with a radial inner cavity can be designed to be inserted into a container, such as a carton, above a full-surface spiral-shaped cushioning wrap, so that the cushioning spiral covers the bottom of the carton, the transported item is placed on the cushioning spiral, and the cushioning toroid can be inserted around the transported item. Depending on the height of the transported item, several cushioning spiral rings can be inserted in order to surround the transported item along its height. For example, another cushioning screw can be placed on top of the transported goods. Alternatively or additionally, the winding device can be designed to provide a spiral-shaped cushioning material that is non-circular on the outside. For this purpose, at least two deflectors of the reel can be attached diametrically opposite one another to a boom of the reel, wherein the distance between these opposite deflectors is greater than, preferably at least twice as large as, in particular at least three times as large as, particularly preferably at least four times as large as the maximum width of the cushioning material to be wound. A non-circular spiral-shaped three-dimensional cushioning material can, for example, have a first longitudinal extent in the winding plane that can be at least 1.5 times as large as or at least 2 times as large as or greater than the second longitudinal extent perpendicular to the first longitudinal extent.Non-round cushioning material is particularly suitable for filling containers, for example boxes, whose surface to be cushioned, for example the base surface, has a shape that deviates significantly from a round shape, for example a rectangular shape.
[0022] According to a preferred embodiment of a winding device according to the invention, the reel comprises a preferably circular turntable as a boom, to which the deflectors are attached at a radial distance from the rotation axis. In particular, the at least two or more than two deflectors can be attached to the boom at a constant radial distance from the rotation axis. Preferably, the deflectors can be attached to the reel's boom concentrically with respect to the rotation axis. In this way, spirally wound cushioning materials of consistent quality and shape can be easily and quickly produced.
[0023] According to a preferred embodiment of a winding device according to the invention, the deflectors can taper conically in the direction of the rotation axis and / or a direction oriented perpendicular to the boom, preferably in the vertical direction, in particular downwards. A deflector can, for example, have a circumferential taper transverse to the direction of the rotation axis (the deflector has different transverse widths in the circumferential direction at two points offset in the direction of the rotation axis). A deflector can have a taper transverse to the direction of the rotation axis in the radial direction (i.e., at two points offset in the direction of the rotation axis, the deflector has different transverse widths in the radial direction relative to the rotation axis). For example, a mandrel-like deflector can be conical or frustoconical.A cross-sectional design of the at least two or more than two deflectors that tapers from the boom facilitates the deformation-free removal of a spirally wound cushioning product from the reel. In particular, if this design of the deflectors is implemented in combination with the first aspect of the invention, in which the rotation axis extends vertically, a design with a tapered deflector can be used in a largely or fully automated winding device, in which spirally wound cushioning products can advantageously be removed without manual intervention after completion of the winding process.
[0024] According to a preferred embodiment of a winding device according to the invention, at least one of the at least two or more than two deflectors is oriented obliquely, at least in sections, relative to its longitudinal direction, in particular the vertical direction and / or a direction oriented perpendicular to the boom, in particular with a bevel oriented in the circumferential direction to the axis of rotation, in particular with a bevel angle of at least 5° and / or at most 45°, in particular at least 15° and / or at most 45°, preferably approximately 30°. The bevel is preferably provided starting from the boom in the direction of the rotation axis direction provided for operation. It is conceivable for a deflector to be curved in a hook-like manner, wherein a curvature deviating from an ideal cylindrical shape and optionally a curvature realized at least in sections as an oblique one can be provided. It has been shown that a slant and / or curvature of deflectors can improve the driving effect relative to the cushioning material, so that a particularly fast winding process can be ensured. Alternatively or additionally, at least a sectionally slanted driver can provide an improved driving effect, which can be used to provide a tighter winding. For example, a winding device can rotate at a circumferential rotational speed that is at least as fast as or faster than the discharge speed of the forming device, so that the winding device can exert a tensile stress on the part of the cushioning material tube to be wound up, so that the turns can be formed so that they lie close to one another.
[0025] The winding device can comprise a housing which, in a closed state, surrounds the reel on both sides in the axial direction of the rotation axis. In particular, the housing can also surround the reel essentially completely in the radial direction. In the closed state, the housing preferably surrounds the reel on both sides in the axial direction of the rotation axis over at least a large area, preferably at least approximately 30%, 50% or 70%. At least on one side, an essentially full-surface environment can be provided by the housing, for example at least 80%, in particular at least 90% of the area which is spanned by the area spread out by the deflectors, preferably the area spanned by the boom, in particular the area spanned by the maximum windable cushion spiral.
[0026] The housing sides that surround the reel on both sides in the axial direction of the rotation axis are preferably at least as far apart as the smallest to the largest transverse width of the cushioning material tube at the exit of the cushioning conversion machine. The distance between the opposite housing sides in the axial direction of the rotation axis that surround the reel can preferably be less than 5 times, preferably less than 3 times, particularly preferably less than twice the (maximum) width of the cushioning tube at the exit of the cushioning conversion machine. The opposing housing sides surrounding the reel can serve as a guide for the cushioning material to be wound along its path from the exit of the cushioning conversion machine to the deflectors of the reel. The opposing housing sides, which surround the reel on both sides in the axial direction of the rotation axis, can act as an axial bearing, preferably an axial plain bearing, for the cushioning material during winding into a cushioning spiral in order to provide a well-defined shape for the cushioning spiral, which may have an internal cavity and / or be circumferentially non-circular. The housing can stabilize and support the shaping effect of the winding device. Furthermore, a housing which surrounds the reel at least in the axial direction and optionally in the radial direction provides effective workplace safety, preventing a user from injuring themselves on a rotating reel. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the at least two or more than two deflectors are attached to a boom in the form of a turntable. In particular, the winding device can comprise a cover plate that surrounds the turntable in the radial and / or horizontal direction. The cover plate can be equipped with a recess for the turntable. Preferably, the turntable can be circular and held in a circular recess in the cover plate, which is in particular substantially complementary in shape to the turntable. An annular gap extending in the radial direction can be formed between the cover plate and the turntable. The recess in the cover plate can penetrate the cover plate or be introduced into the cover plate in a pocket-like manner. The cover plate can provide the cushioning spiral with an axial plain bearing during the winding process, preferably on the drive side of the reel or on the side on which the reel arm is non-rotatably connected to the drive shaft or the like. The boom, in particular the turntable, as well as the cover plate radially surrounding the boom can form part of the housing which surrounds the reel in the axial direction of the rotation axis, for example in two axial directions.
[0027] According to a preferred embodiment of a winding device according to the invention, a support surface for the cushioning material and / or a cushioning spiral is arranged opposite, in particular in the axial direction of the rotation axis, and / or in the vertical direction below the boom of the reel, to which at least two or more than two deflectors are attached. The support surface can be arranged in particular opposite a turntable, which can preferably be surrounded by a cover plate. The support surface can form the housing side opposite the reel, which surrounds the reel in a first axial direction of the rotation axis. The support surface can serve as a sliding bearing for the cushioning material to be wound up and / or, in particular during the winding process, for the cushioning spiral.
[0028] According to a preferred development of the invention, the support surface can be movable between a closed position for the winding process or for winding a cushioning coil from the cushioning material and an open position for accessing the reel and / or for dispensing a cushioning coil, in particular in the manner of a trapdoor, sectional door, roller shutter, or similar manner. The support surface can, for example, be pivoted, tilted, moved transversely relative to the rotation axis, or moved in another manner.
[0029] The support surface can be composed of several movable bodies that can be moved in different directions when the support surface changes between the closed position and the open position. For example, a support surface can comprise trapdoors that can be folded away in two or more different directions. A roller shutter- or sectional door-like support surface can comprise several leaf-like support bodies that have a main direction of extension and are articulated to one another transversely to their main direction of extension, so that, when moving transversely to the main direction of extension (and transversely to the direction of the rotation axis), they can be rolled up like a roller shutter or displaced like a sectional door along a curved path, a rail, or the like. The movement of a support surface arranged opposite the reel allows easy and safe access to the preferably stationary reel of the winding device, in particular for removing a wound cushioning coil. In a design with a support surface arranged vertically beneath the boom, this can serve, in the closed position, as a safeguard against the cushioning material falling out vertically in the direction of gravity; and in the open position, the moved support surface can allow a finished cushioning coil to fall off the reel. It may then be preferred that, with respect to the closed position, a receiving and / or storage container for several cushioning coils is provided relative to the side of the support surface opposite the reel.A receiving and / or storage container allows for the production of multiple cushioning coils in stock without requiring a user to remove each individual coil from the reel. Maintaining a certain amount of cushioning coils in stock ensures that sufficient cushioning material is always available when filling a shipping container, thus avoiding waiting times for packing personnel.
[0030] According to a preferred development of a winding device according to the invention, the support surface can comprise a plurality of rotatable bearing members, such as bearing cylinders, bearing balls, or the like. By providing rotatable bearing members in the support surface, the cushioning material and / or the cushioning spiral can move along the bearing members, preferably in the vertical direction above them, wherein, instead of sliding friction, rolling friction can be present at least in sections. The bearing members can have parallel and at least partially coaxial axes of rotation. The bearing members can have axes of rotation that are arranged in a star-shaped or radially spoke-like manner relative to the winding device's axis of rotation.
[0031] The invention also relates to a cushioning winding system comprising a winding device as described above. The cushioning winding system further comprises a cushioning conversion machine for producing a cushioning material from a web-shaped starting material, in particular a roll or a fan-fold stack, for example made of paper. The cushioning conversion machine of the cushioning winding system has a discharge opening at which the cushioning material leaves the cushioning conversion machine, preferably in a tube-like manner, in a discharge direction. The discharge direction preferably extends in the axial direction. In particular, the discharge direction is directed from the discharge opening onto a conveyor path which crosses the axis of rotation of the winding device or which leads at least between an opposite carrier or deflector in a region between two mutually opposite carriers or deflectors of the winding device. The cushioning winding system is free of a guide device for guiding the cushioning material in a radial direction transverse to the rotational axis of the reel in an area between the cushioning conversion machine, in particular the output opening of the cushioning conversion machine, and the reel, in particular the area spanned by the deflectors during one rotation about the rotational axis. In the known winding device, it has been shown that a beak-like guide, for example, which projects from the cushioning conversion machine to the reel, represents a particularly critical source of error because cushioning material that has already been folded and / or rotated by 180° is already rotated against the beak guide, which can trigger paper jams. By omitting a guide device for guiding the cushioning material in a radial direction transverse to the rotational axis of the reel, this source of error, which exists in the prior art, can be avoided.Nevertheless, reliable and high-quality guidance of the cushioning material from the output opening of the cushioning conversion machine can be ensured if, for example, the winding device according to the first aspect of the invention is implemented with a vertical rotation axis and a guide bridge can be provided in the area between the cushioning conversion machine and the reel, vertically below the cushioning material, in the axial direction of the rotation axis, vertically below the winding plane. A guide bridge can be implemented, for example, as part of a winding device housing, for example, by a cover plate or a support surface.Other guide-free orientations of upholstery winding systems are conceivable; for example, the upholstery conversion machine can be arranged vertically above the winding device and the upholstery material can be drawn vertically downwards in the direction of gravity, so that a guide device can be dispensed with thanks to the effect of gravity.
[0032] According to a preferred development of a cushion winding system according to the invention, it can be configured to selectively dispense a cushioning material, in particular in strip or cushion form, or a cushioning spiral. [0034] In the following description of various, partially combinable, embodiments, the same or similar components are identified by the same or similar reference numerals to simplify readability. A winding device according to the invention generally has the reference numeral 1, and a winding system according to the invention generally has the reference numeral 100. The central components of the winding system 100 are a cushioning conversion machine 5, which produces a three-dimensional cushioning material from a web-shaped starting material, and a winding device 1, which spirally winds the cushioning material 3 provided by the cushioning conversion machine 5.
[0035] For example, the cushioning conversion machine 5 can be the devices marketed by the applicant under the brand names PaperJet or SpeedMan, in particular as described in the documents mentioned in the introduction. A particularly suitable starting material for converting into a cushioning material is a paper web, which can be stored, for example, as a roll or in a fanfold stack.
[0036] The web-shaped starting material generally has a longitudinal dimension that is several orders of magnitude larger than the transverse dimension (width). The transverse dimension of the starting material is several orders of magnitude larger than the thickness of the starting material. The thickness of the starting material is less than 1 mm. The width of the starting material is at least a few centimeters and at most a few meters. The longitudinal extension of the starting material is more than 10 m, preferably more than 50 m, in particular more than 100 m. The starting material can comprise several layers of web material.
[0037] In the upholstery conversion machine, the web-shaped starting material is converted into a three-dimensional cushioning material. The upholstery conversion machine can, in particular, produce a tubular cushioning material as described above from the web-shaped starting material. During the conversion of the starting material into a cushioning material in the upholstery conversion machine, a cushioning material is produced whose transverse width is reduced compared to the transverse width of the starting material and whose height is significantly greater than the thickness of the starting material. The height and width of the cushioning material are essentially of the same order of magnitude after conversion in the upholstery conversion machine. Preferably, the height of the cushioning material can be at least 1 / 5, in particular at least ½ the width of the cushioning material and / or at most five times, preferably at most twice, the width of the cushioning material. The width and height of the cushioning material are preferably several centimeters each. Forming in the cushioning forming machine preferably takes place continuously, so that a tubular cushioning material is produced from the web-like starting material. The longitudinal extent of the cushioning material essentially corresponds to the longitudinal extent of the starting material, apart from the contractions associated with forming.
[0038] The cushioning conversion machine 5 outputs the cushioning material 3 at an output opening 51 in an output direction A. Preferably, the cushioning conversion machine 5 can be arranged and its output 51 can be aligned so that the output direction A is essentially in the horizontal direction H. As shown, for example, in the Figures 1, 3a and 3bAs can be seen, the output direction A from the output opening 51 is aligned in a radial direction R with respect to the axis of rotation D of the winding device 1 described below. In the vertical direction V, the cushioning material 3 is output from the cushioning conversion machine 5 approximately at the level of the reel 11 of the winding device 1. The winding device 1 can be designed horizontally in the transverse direction relative to the output direction A, free of a guide device for guiding the cushioning material 3 from the output opening 51 of the cushioning conversion machine 5 to the reel 11 of the winding device 1. Between the cushioning conversion machine 5 and the reel 11, the cushioning material 3 can be conveyed along a support surface 33 to the reel 11, for example by sliding along or rolling off. The cushioning material moves from the cushioning conversion machine 5 to the reel 11 essentially on a horizontal plane.
[0039] The horizontal plane on which the cushioning material 3 is guided from the cushioning conversion machine 5 to the reel 11 can correspond to the winding plane in which a cushioning spiral 4 or cushioning screw is wound from the cushioning material by the winding device, as described below.
[0040] The winding device 1 according to the Figures 1, 2 and 3a-3e comprises a reel 11 with two deflectors, which are designed as prongs, pins or mandrels 21. The mandrels 21 are connected in a rotationally fixed manner to a turntable 13, as in Figure 4 The rotary table 13 has a circular cross-section with a radius that is greater than the distance r of the mandrels 21 to the rotational axis D of the reel 11.
[0041] The cushioning material 3 output from the cushioning conversion machine 5 has a transverse width b and a height h. The width b refers below to the larger dimension of the cushioning material extending transversely to the longitudinal direction. The distance a between the drivers, such as the mandrels 21, of the reel 11, preferably corresponds to twice the radius r by which the mandrels 21 are spaced from the axis of rotation D, and is at least as large as the width b of the cushioning material 3. The distance a between two drivers adjacent in the circumferential direction of the reel 11 can preferably be less than three times, in particular less than twice, and most preferably less than 1.5 times the width b of the cushioning material 3.
[0042] As in the Figures 3a and 3bAs can be seen, the cushioning material 3, which is delivered from the cushioning converting machine 5 in the output direction A, is threaded between two adjacent carriers, such as mandrels 21, of the reel 11. In Figure 3a the front end 41 of the cushioning material 3 is located shortly before the threading between the drivers of the reel 11. The front end 41 of the cushioning material 3 is guided between two adjacent drivers in the output direction A for threading. The threading conveyance can take place at least until the front end 41 of the cushioning material 3 has been guided past the axis of rotation D of the reel 11 at least far enough that the front end 41 of the cushioning material 3 is at least the smallest radial distance r of a driver of the reel from its axis of rotation.
[0043] After threading the cushioning material 3 into the reel 11, the reel 11 can be driven to wind a cushioning spiral 4. When the reel 11 is driven, a motor causes the drivers to rotate, for example the ones in the Figures 1-4 shown mandrels 21, around the rotation axis D. When executed according to the Figures 1-4 The driving mandrels 21 are arranged in a rotationally fixed manner on a rotary plate 13, which is driven in rotation via a schematically indicated drive kinematics, which may include a drive motor and a drive shaft. The reel 11 is rotatable relative to the housing 31 of the winding device 1 and to the cushioning forming device 5.
[0044] When the reel 11 is driven, the carriers, which at least partially implement deflectors, rotate about their axis of rotation D. When the carriers rotate about the axis of rotation D, they come into contact with the threaded cushioning material 3 to be wound up, as shown in Figure 3dshown. If the cushioning material 3 has different width and height dimensions, the contact of the carriers with the cushioning material 3 can initially cause a twisting rotation of the cushioning material 3 around its longitudinal axis, so that the wider transverse dimension (the width b) of the cushioning material is aligned parallel to the longitudinal extent of the carriers. When designed according to the Figures 1-3e the carriers extend in the vertical direction V. The cushioning material is, as described above, output from the cushioning output device 5 in the horizontal direction H in the output direction A and has at the output 51 a width b which extends transversely to the output direction in the horizontal direction H, as well as a height or cushioning thickness h which extends in the vertical direction V. When initiating the winding process according to Figure 3dFirst, the cushioning material 3 is twisted around its longitudinal axis so that the larger transverse width b of the cushioning material is aligned in the vertical direction V according to the mandrels 21.
[0045] In the Figures 1-4 In the illustrated embodiment of a winding device 1 with a reel 11, which comprises two driver mandrels 21, when the winding process is initiated, a driver mandrel 21 near the front end 41 of the cushioning material 3 will come into contact with the latter and cause a deflection of the front end 41 of the cushioning material 3 in a first transverse direction, for example to the right relative to the output direction A in the horizontal direction H. A further driver mandrel 21 will come into contact with a region 42 of the cushioning material 3 trailing the front end 41 and force a deflection of this point 42 of the cushioning material 3 in an opposite transverse direction, for example to the left, relative to the output direction A.
[0046] The driver mandrels 21 of the reel 11 first complete a 180° rotation around the rotation axis D until the driver mandrel 21, which is in contact with the front end region 41 of the cushioning material 3, comes into contact with a point 43 of the cushioning material 3 that is further back in the dispensing direction A relative to the trailing point 42. At this point in time, after an initial 180° rotation of a driver in contact with the front end 41 of the cushioning material 3, the cushioning material 3 is wound into a U-shaped cushioning sausage. As the winding device 1 continues to rotate the reel 11 around its rotation axis D, further turns of the subsequent strand of cushioning material are wound around the U-shaped cushioning sausage. In this way, a cushioning spiral 4 is created. The number of turns of the cushioning spiral 4 can be adjusted as desired.Experience has shown that a U-shaped cushioning sausage as described above can be considered the initial cushioning spiral. A winding of 360° relative to the front end 41 of the cushioning material 3, or any multiple of 360°, corresponds to one turn in the cushioning spiral 4. Preferably, a cushioning spiral 4 can have approximately 1.5 turns (cf. Figure 11 ), about 2 turns, about 3.5 turns ( Figure 13 ) or more turns.
[0047] Preferably, the winding device or winding system can be equipped with control electronics that starts and / or stops the winding process according to a control specification, so that a cushioning spiral of a predetermined size, for example, a predetermined volume, a predetermined cushioning material strand (3) length, and / or a predetermined number of turns is preferably produced. The winding process can be terminated, for example, by a manual or mechanical severing process at a trailing end 49 of the cushioning spiral 4 or the cushioning material 3.
[0048] As in the Figures 1 and 3a-3eAs shown, the axis of rotation D of the reel 11 of the winding device 1 can extend in the vertical direction, preferably even exactly vertically. The winding process can take place within a housing 31 of the winding device. The housing 31 can be formed by the turntable 13 being delimited by a cover plate 15 surrounding the turntable 13 in the horizontal and radial directions. The cover plate 15 can comprise a preferably annular through-opening 17 or a blind hole-like pocket (not shown in detail) for receiving the turntable 13 or another arm of the reel 11. The receptacle 17 in the cover plate 15 can preferably be dimensioned such that an annular gap is always present in the radial direction between the arm, formed for example as a turntable 13, and the cover plate 15.
[0049] In the axial direction of the rotation axis D opposite the boom formed as a rotary plate 13 and the cover plate 15, the housing 31 of the winding device 1 can comprise a support surface 33. In the Figures 1, 2 and 3a-3e In the illustrated embodiment, the support surface 33 is composed of roller shutter-like or sectional door-like connected bearing cylinders 34. The bearing cylinders 34 are mounted on the housing 31, in particular rotatably about their bearing cylinder bearings. The bearing cylinders run parallel to each other. The bearing cylinder axes extend in the horizontal direction H transverse to the dispensing direction A. The width of the bearing cylinders 34 transverse to the dispensing direction A in the horizontal direction H essentially corresponds to the inner width of the housing 31. If the cushioning material 3, as in Figure 3aAs shown, the cushioning material 3 is discharged from the cushioning conversion machine 5 in the discharge direction A, it can be guided along the upper side of the support surface 33. For example, the cushioning material 3 can be guided to the reel 11 by rolling on bearing cylinders 34.
[0050] The support surface 33 ensures, for example, Figures 1 and 3eThe winding process shown ensures that the cushioning spiral 4 cannot fall downwards from the reel 11 in the vertical direction V. The housing (31) parts located opposite one another in the axial direction of the rotational axis D, which here are formed on the one hand by the support surface 33 and on the other hand by the cover plate 15 and the turntable 13, delimit the winding plane. Surrounding the reel 11 in the radial direction R are further housing walls that extend between the axial boundary sides of the housing 31. At least one housing wall is in contact with the cushioning conversion machine 5 and / or has an inlet opening for cushioning material 3. The housing 31 ensures reliable protection against intentional or unintentional intervention by a user in the area of the rotating reel 11.
[0051] If a cushion spiral 4 of sufficient, in particular predetermined, size is wound up, the support surface 33 can be arranged as shown in Figure 2 schematically shown, from which Figure 1 shown closed position into an open position, in which it provides access to the reel 11. When the support surface 33 is in its open position, a cushioning coil 4 can be removed from the reel 11, slide down, fall off, or be removed in some other way. For example, a storage container 10 can be provided in the winding device 11 vertically below the reel 11, in which a plurality of cushioning coils 4, as in Figure 1shown, can be stored. The winding device 1 is preferably designed such that, with respect to the closed position of the support surface 33, a storage container 10 is provided opposite the reel 11, so that when the support surface 33 is in the open position, a cushioning spiral 4 or cushioning material 3 can pass from the area of the output and / or winding plane through an open opening 35 into the area of the storage container 10.
[0052] As in Figure 2As shown, it is conceivable that the winding system 100 provides a preconfigured setting according to which cushioning material 3, for example in cushioning pad or tube form 6, can be delivered directly from the cushioning conversion machine 5 into the storage container 10. The reel 21 of the winding device 11 can be placed in a passive state in the open position, for example, locked or switched off. The control electronics of the winding system 100 can, for example, be configured to selectively effect a cushioning pad production state or a cushioning spiral production state, wherein in a cushioning pad production state, cushioning pads 6 are produced by the winding system 100 and wherein in the cushioning spiral production state, cushioning spirals 4 are provided by the winding system 100. The provision can take place via a storage container 10.It is conceivable that the control electronics of the winding system 100 are configured to selectively provide any number of cushioning pads 6 and any number of cushioning coils 4. For example, the control electronics of the winding system 100 can be configured to provide a user-selected number of cushioning pads and a user-selected number of cushioning coils 4, wherein the control electronics can cause the winding system 100 to automatically switch from the cushioning pad production state to the cushioning coil production state, or vice versa.
[0053] Both Figures 1 and 2 The support surface is exemplified by the one in Figure 1shown closed position, in which the bearing cylinders 34 of the support surface 33 form a horizontal plane, displaced like a sectional door, so that the bearing cylinders 34 of the support surface 33 no longer delimit a housing 31 opposite the reel 11, but release an opening 35 in the housing 31. The support surface 33 is in the Figures 1 and 2 In the illustrated open state, they are displaced to an inner side of the storage container 10, so that the bearing cylinders 34 define a vertical plane. The rotation axes of the bearing cylinders 34 are arranged parallel and vertically one above the other.
[0054] The Figures 4-7 show different reels. Figure 1The reel 11 comprises a simple, fully circular turntable 13 of a boom, on which diametrically opposed drive mandrels 21 are provided with respect to the rotation axis D. The drive mandrels 21 are arranged on a concentric orbital path around the rotation axis D with a constant radius r. Each mandrel 21 acts as a deflector.
[0055] Figure 5 shows another reel 11 with two diametrically opposed driving mandrel pairs. All mandrels 21, 23 have the same radial distance r from the rotational axis D. The circumferential distance between two mandrels 21, 23 of a mandrel pair is in the range between 10° and 40°, preferably about 30°. With a reel according to Figure 5 A non-circular cushion spiral (for example according to Figure 11 ) wrapped.
[0056] Figure 6shows another reel in which the drivers are realized by deflection edges 23* of deflection blades. The deflection blades are arranged at a radial distance r relative to the rotational axis D on a circulating path. With the reel 11 according to Figure 6 cushioning spirals can be wound which are very similar to those which are wound with the reel 11 according to Figure 5 The deflection blades on the reel according to Figure 6 and the driver mandrel (21, 23) pairs of the reel 11 according to Figure 5 are arranged at a distance a from each other which is at least as large as the width b of the cushioning material to be wrapped.
[0057] Another version of a reel 11 is shown in the Figures 7 The reel according to Figure 7comprises four pairs of deflection mandrels, which are arranged opposite one another in pairs. Between two circumferentially adjacent mandrel pairs, a distance a is provided which is at least as large as the width b of the cushioning material. The distance between two mandrels 21, 23 or 21', 23' of a pair is smaller than the distance a between the adjacent pairs. All mandrels 21, 21', 23, 23' lie on the same concentric circumferential path at a distance r from the rotation axis D. With the reel according to Figure 7 can be a torus-shaped cushion spiral with an internal cavity, such as in Figure 12 In the inner cavity of the cushioning spiral there is then essentially only the front end 41 of the cushioning spiral 4, which is initially wound in the manner shown in the Figures 3a-3eThe cushioning material 3, which follows the first deflection 42 in the conveying direction behind the front end 41 of the cushioning material 3, runs during winding around the reel 11 according to Figure 7 on the outside circumference of the mandrels 21, 23, 21', 23' or the outside of the previous first, second or further winding.
[0058] An example geometry of a driving mandrel 21 is shown in Figure 8The driver mandrel has a length L1 which, in the installed state, extends parallel to the rotational axis D of the reel 11. The length L1 is preferably at least as large as the width b of the cushioning material. The length L1 of a driver mandrel 21 can preferably be dimensioned such that, in the closed position of the housing 31, it extends from one axial inner housing side to the opposite housing inner side. Preferably, the length L1 of a driver mandrel is at least 60%, preferably at least 75%, in particular at least 85% of the distance from the axial first inner side of the housing 31 to the opposite second axial side of the housing 31. The mandrel 21 can, as in Figure 8 shown, frustoconical with a wide base with a diameter D1 of approximately 1cm-3cm and a cone angle α between 1° and 15°, preferably between 1° and 5°, in particular between 2° and 30.
[0059] The Figures 9a-9dshow different perspective images of a driver hook 25. In contrast to the previously described driver mandrel 21, the driver hook 25 has a shape that deviates from rotational symmetry to the longitudinal extent. The hook 25 has a bevel which, when the hook is installed, preferably extends in the circumferential direction of the reel 11. The leading end of the hook is spaced by a leading length L2 from the trailing fastening end, to which the hook 25 is fastened to the boom, in particular the turntable 13, of the reel 11. Relative to a curvature axis, which can preferably be aligned parallel to the rotational axis D of the reel 11, the hook 25 can have a curvature with a radius of curvature D2. The axial longitudinal extent L1 of the driver hook 25 is the same as explained above with regard to the axial longitudinal extent L1 of the driver mandrel 21.The diameter D1 of the driver hook 25 can be substantially constant along its longitudinal extent L1 or can have a taper at least in sections.
[0060] Figure 10 shows a cardboard-like shipping container 200, the bottom surface 201 of which is largely covered by cushioning spirals 4. The production of the cushioning spirals 4 can be carried out as described above with regard to the Figures 3a-3e with a reel according to Figure 4 have taken place. Figure 13 shows the square shipping container 200 with a single, non-circular, hexagonal cushioning coil 4 with two longer and 2×2 shorter sides.
[0061] Figure 11 shows another, elongated rectangular shipping container 300, whose bottom surface 301 is covered with a single, non-circular cushioning spiral 4. The non-circular cushioning spiral 4 according to Figure 11has a first longitudinal extension width l1 in the spiral plane, which is more than twice as large as the second longitudinal extension l2 perpendicular to the first longitudinal extension l1, also in the spiral plane. Such a non-circular cushion spiral 4 can be produced, for example, with the reel according to Figure 5 or Figure 6 It is also conceivable that a reel with a basic design according to Figure 4 , but with a radial distance of the driver mandrels 21 to the axis of rotation D, which is substantially greater than the width b of the cushioning material 3, is used to produce a non-circular cushioning spiral 4.
[0062] Figure 12 shows a nearly cuboid-shaped container 400, the bottom side 401 of which is covered on an annular surface with a toroidal cushion spiral or cushion spiral ring 4. The toroidal cushion spiral 4 according to Figure 12leaves a radial interior space 45 free, the transverse width of which can be substantially greater in any direction in the spiral plane than the width b of the cushioning material 3.
