Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to the technical field of binders that can replace bitumens, particularly in the road sector. More specifically, the invention relates to pitch compositions, their preparation methods and their uses in the road and industrial sectors.

[0002] Deasphalting pitch can be incorporated into bitumen compositions, mixed with a bitumen base. Deasphalting pitch is an economical component, which brings hardness to the composition. However, the main drawback of deasphalting pitch is its low penetrability index defined in standard EN 1427-Appendix B, which is less than -1.5, which makes it very sensitive to temperature unlike standard bitumens. Pitches therefore do not meet the road requirements defined in standards EN 12591 and EN 13924-1, particularly in standard EN 12591. Furthermore, deasphalting pitch is more sensitive to oxidation compared to standard bitumen, due to its higher asphaltene content. When it is incorporated into a bitumen composition, it is therefore in limited quantity, generally not exceeding 20 to 30% by mass, relative to the total mass of the composition. In cases where it is mixed with a blown bitumen base, a higher content, up to 75% by mass of the total composition, may be adopted. FR 3 061 190 A1 describes a binder composition comprising at least: a binder base chosen from an oil, a bitumen base, a pitch (deasphalting pitch), a clear binder, or a mixture of one or more of these binder bases; an acid compound; and an amide compound.

[0003] Within the framework of the invention, the applicant proposes new pitch compositions which are suitable for use as binders, in particular in the road sector, and, in particular, which can be used to manufacture coatings or asphalts.

[0004] The pitch compositions according to the invention could therefore constitute a substitute for bitumen compositions, which would be particularly advantageous in the case of bitumen shortages. In addition, in the context of the decision of the World Maritime Organization to reduce the maximum sulfur limit in marine fuels to 0.5% by mass in 2020, the available tonnage of pitch could increase and the invention would be a new way of recovering deasphalting pitches. Invention

[0005] In this context, the inventors have developed new pitch compositions which have an increased penetrability index measured according to standard EN1427-Appendix B, compared to the same pitch compositions which do not include sodium hydroxide.

[0006] The invention relates to a pitch composition comprising a mixture: of deasphalting pitch, which represents at least 50% by mass, and preferably at least 80% by mass, and preferentially at least 90% by mass, of the total mass of the composition, and of a hydroxide XOH with X = Na or K, which represents from 0.001 to 1% by mass, preferably from 0.002 to 0.5% by mass, and preferentially 0.01 to 0.5% by mass of the total mass of the composition.

[0007] Advantageously, a composition according to the invention has one of the following characteristics, several of the following characteristics, or even all of the following characteristics: the hydroxide XOH, with X = Na or K, forms particles which have a mean maximum size in the range from 10 to 100 µm, preferably in the range from 20 to 60 µm and / or which have a maximum size less than or equal to 100 µm, preferably less than or equal to 60 µm; the hydroxide XOH is sodium hydroxide; it has a penetrability index determined according to EN 1427-Appendix B, greater than -1.5, preferably greater than or equal to -1.3; it has a needle penetrability at 25°C, determined according to EN 1426, which belongs to the range from 0 to 50 mm / 10 and / or a ring-ball softening temperature, determined according to EN 1427, which belongs to the range from 50 to 175°C; it also includes a hydrocarbon component CH, selected from hydrocarbon oils, soft grade bitumens, fluxed bitumens, fluidized bitumens and their mixtures, said hydrocarbon component CHpreferably representing at most 10% by mass, preferably 0.1 to 10% by mass, more preferably 0.5 to 8% by mass, and even more preferably 1 to 5% by mass, of the total mass of the composition.

[0008] The invention also relates to a process for preparing a pitch composition, comprising the following steps: a- having an initial pitch composition, and b- incorporating a hydroxide XOH with X = Na or K, in an amount such that the amount of hydroxide XOH introduced represents from 0.001 to 1% by mass, of the total mass of the final pitch composition obtained, the initial pitch composition comprising pitch in an amount such that the pitch represents at least 50% by mass, preferably at least 80% by mass, and preferentially at least 90% by mass, of the total mass of the final pitch composition obtained.

[0009] In the process according to the invention, advantageously, in step b, a hydrocarbon composition IC comprising from 15 to 50% by mass of hydroxide XOH with X = Na or K is incorporated into the initial pitch composition, said composition IC, comprising a hydrocarbon component CH, preferably chosen from hydrocarbon oils, soft grade bitumens, fluxed bitumens, fluidized bitumens and their mixtures.

[0011] Advantageously, the incorporation of the hydrocarbon composition ICin the initial pitch composition, is carried out at a temperature in the range from 150 to 220 °C, preferably in the range from 160 to 190 °C and / or with stirring in the range from 100 to 500 rpm, preferably in the range from 200 to 400 rpm and / or for a period of 10 to 180 minutes, preferably 10 to 20 minutes.

[0012] The invention also relates to the use of a hydroxide XOH with X = Na or K, in a composition which comprises pitch representing at least 50% by mass, preferably at least 80% by mass, and preferentially at least 90% by mass, of the total mass of the composition, in which the hydroxide XOH with X = Na or K is introduced into the composition, in an amount representing from 0.001 to 1% by mass, preferably from 0.002 to 0.5% by mass, and preferentially from 0.01 to 0.5% by mass, of the total mass of the composition, to increase the penetrability index determined according to standard EN 1427-Appendix B of the composition obtained, and to obtain, in particular, a penetrability index greater than -1.5, preferably greater than or equal to -1.3, the mass % given for the pitch and the hydroxide being calculated relative to the total mass of the composition including hydroxide.

[0020] Therefore, in particular, when referring to a hydroxide XOH, a hydrocarbon compound, a pitch or a soft bitumen, this includes only one of these elements or a combination or mixture of one or more of these elements. However, preferably, these terms designate only one of these elements.

[0021] In this text, "hydroxide" and "hydroxide XOH" are used interchangeably and refer to NaOH, KOH and their mixtures.

[0022] Similarly, "deasphalting pitch" and "pitch" are used interchangeably.

[0023] In this text, unless otherwise specified, when reference is made to a standard, it is the latest version of that standard available on 1 December 2019. Pitch

[0024] Deasphalting pitches are derived from the residues of vacuum distillation of petroleum. Deasphalting pitches, also referred to as pitches in the context of the invention for reasons of simplicity, have characteristics different from bitumens, particularly in terms of penetrability index and, consequently, do not belong to the bitumen family.

[0025] A deasphalting pitch can be obtained by conventional processes used on oil in refineries. During refining operations, the oil is subjected to a succession of atmospheric distillation and distillation under reduced pressure (commonly called vacuum distillation). The processes of distillation under atmospheric pressure and distillation under reduced pressure, used in oil refining, are well known to those skilled in the art, as reported in the presentation of the technical field of the invention. Any process of distillation under atmospheric pressure, leading to a distillation residue under atmospheric pressure and any process of distillation under reduced pressure carried out on one or more distillation residues under atmospheric pressure, and leading to a distillation residue under reduced pressure (or under vacuum) can be used.

[0026] Conventionally, crude oil is first subjected to distillation at atmospheric pressure (i.e. at 1013.25 hPa), which leads to the production of a gaseous phase, various distillates and a residue from atmospheric distillation. This first distillation stage allows the recovery of different hydrocarbon fractions (gas: butane and propane, light gasoline, heavy gasoline, kerosene, diesel, domestic fuel oil, etc.), separated according to their boiling point. Atmospheric distillation is carried out in a tray column. At the end of this distillation under atmospheric pressure, a heavy residual fraction remains, which is called atmospheric residue or atmospheric distillation residue. This atmospheric residue contains long-chain hydrocarbons which, as a result, are fragile and are therefore likely to be cut into smaller chains if heating is continued at atmospheric pressure. Then, the atmospheric distillation residue is itself subjected to a distillation under reduced pressure, called vacuum distillation, which separates a heavy diesel, various distillate cuts and a vacuum distillation residue. The reduced pressure used for this second distillation is, in general, in the range of 10 to 150 hPa. Such a reduced pressure makes it possible to lower the temperature at which the components evaporate, and thus allows for reduced heating. Distillation under reduced pressure is also carried out in a tray or packed column, or a mixed system combining these two types of columns. At the end of this vacuum distillation step, a heavy residual fraction remains, which is called vacuum distillation residue, or reduced pressure distillation residue. This vacuum distillation residue contains deasphalting pitch in varying concentrations.

[0027] It is possible to recover the deasphalting pitch using the following process.

[0028] The vacuum distillation residue is subjected to a deasphalting operation by adding a suitable solvent, such as an alkane like propane, which thus allows the pitch to be precipitated and separated from the light fractions such as the deasphalted oil. Advantageously, the deasphalting operation is carried out at a temperature of between 30°C and 200°C, preferably 35°C to 90°C and at a pressure of between 0.7 MPa and 7 MPa, preferably 2 to 5 MPa, more preferably 2 to 4 MPa.

[0029] Preferably, the deasphalting pitch according to the invention has a needle penetrability at 25°C of 0 to 45 1 / 10 mm, preferably 1 to 40 1 / 10 mm, more preferably 1 to 30 1 / 10 mm, even more advantageously 5 to 25 1 / 10 mm, it being understood that the penetrability is measured according to standard EN 1426.

[0030] Preferably, the deasphalting pitch according to the invention has a ring and ball softening temperature (RBT) of between 50°C and 175°C, preferably from 50°C to 140°C, more preferably from 50°C to 90°C and even more advantageously from 50°C to 65°C, the RBT being measured according to standard EN 1427.

[0031] Preferably, the deasphalting pitch according to the invention has a Conradson carbon content (CCR) of 15 to 55%, preferably 25 to 35%, more preferably 25 to 30%. The Conradson carbon content (CCR) can be measured according to standard NF ISO 6615: (Petroleum products - Determination of carbon residue - Conradson method). Preferably, the deasphalting pitch according to the invention has a density d25°C defined according to standard EN 15326 in the range from 1.05 to 1.15, preferably in the range from 1.05 to 1.10, more preferably in the range from 1.06 to 1.10.

[0032] Preferably, the deasphalting pitch according to the invention has a PAH (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) content measured by GC-MS (gas chromatography / mass spectrometry coupling) of less than or equal to 100 ppm, preferably less than 50 ppm. This measurement is carried out on the list of 16 PAHs classified as priorities by the US-EPA (“United States Environmental Protection Agency”).

[0033] Within the scope of the invention, any type of deasphalting pitch obtained from the residues of vacuum distillation of petroleum by precipitation with an alkane, in particular with propane, can be used.

[0034] Deasphalting pitches have a penetrability index determined according to standard EN 1427-Appendix B, generally less than -1.5. Hydroxide

[0035] The invention relates to pitch compositions modified by introducing a hydroxide XOH in which X = Na or K, with preferably X=Na.

[0036] In the context of the invention, when we speak of “hydroxide XOH” or “hydroxide”, we are talking about a hydroxide XOH in which X = Na or K, with preferably X=Na (which corresponds to sodium hydroxide).

[0037] In the context of the invention, a hydroxide XOH with X = Na or K, is used in a composition which comprises pitch to increase the penetrability index of the resulting pitch composition. When referring to the penetrability index in the context of the invention, this is determined according to EN 1427-Appendix B. In said pitch compositions obtained by incorporating hydroxide, the pitch represents at least 50% by mass, preferably at least 80% by mass, and preferentially at least 90% by mass, of the total mass of the composition, and the hydroxide is introduced into the composition, in an amount representing from 0.001 to 1% by mass, preferably 0.002 to 0.5% by mass, and preferentially from 0.01 to 0.5% by mass, of the total mass of the resulting pitch composition. The amount of hydroxide introduced is such that the pitch composition obtained advantageously has a penetrability index greater than -1.5, preferably greater than or equal to -1.3, and preferentially greater than or equal to -1.2. Preferably, the penetrability index of the pitch composition according to the invention is less than 5, preferably less than 1, and preferentially in the range from -1.3 to 1. The hydroxide can thus be used to modify any pitch composition, whether this composition comprises only pitch or whether it comprises an additive envisaged within the scope of the invention.

[0038] In particular, hydroxide XOH can be used in the form of a hydrocarbon composition IC comprising a hydrocarbon component CH and hydroxide XOH. A hydrocarbon composition IC will preferably consist exclusively of a mixture of the hydroxide XOH and a hydrocarbon component CH. Advantageously, the hydroxide XOH is found in such a hydrocarbon composition IC in the form of particles with at least 80% by number of said particles having a maximum size in the range of 10 to 100 µm, preferably in the range of 20 to 60 µm. Such a particle size allows for better control and optimal adjustment of the properties of the resulting pitch composition. The maximum size of a particle, which is generally irregular in shape, corresponds to its largest dimension, in particular measured with a microscope, and preferably a visible light microscope. When a hydrocarbon composition IC is used, the hydroxide XOH advantageously represents from 15 to 50% by mass, in particular from 15 to 25% by mass, of the mass of said hydrocarbon composition IC. Such a hydrocarbon composition IC is then introduced into the pitch composition. Hydrocarbon component

[0039] In the pitch compositions according to the invention, the hydroxide XOH can be introduced, via a hydrocarbon composition IC comprising in addition to the hydroxide XOH a hydrocarbon component CH. In such cases, the hydrocarbon component CH will therefore also be found in the pitch composition according to the invention. In particular, a pitch composition according to the invention comprises a hydrocarbon component CH, in particular chosen from hydrocarbon oils, soft grade bitumens, fluxed bitumens, fluidized bitumens and their mixtures, said hydrocarbon component CH preferably representing at most 10% by mass, preferably 0.1 to 10% by mass, more preferably 0.5 to 8% by mass, and even more preferably 1 to 5% by mass, of the total mass of the pitch composition according to the invention.

[0040] In the present invention, the term "hydrocarbon component" means a hydrocarbon, or a component comprising a hydrocarbon, or composed essentially of a hydrocarbon or a mixture of hydrocarbons. A hydrocarbon is composed entirely of hydrogen and carbon atoms, said compound being able to be saturated or unsaturated, cyclic or acyclic. Alkanes, cycloalkanes, alkenes, alkynes and aromatic hydrocarbons, in particular arenes, are various examples of hydrocarbons. As preferred examples of a hydrocarbon component CH which may be used in the context of the invention, mention may be made of hydrocarbon oils and bitumens. The hydrocarbon component is not a deasphalting pitch.

[0041] Advantageously, the hydrocarbon component CHis a bitumen, preferably a soft grade bitumen as defined in standard EN 12591 (2009 version), for example under the reference V1500, V3000, V6000 or V12000; or a fluxed or cutback bitumen as defined in standard EN 15322 (2013 version), for example referenced Fm 3-225 X 0, Fm 4-75 X 0, Fm 4-150 X 0, Fm 4-300 X 0, Fm 8 x 0, Fv 3-30 X 0, Fv 3-60 X 0, Fv 3-120 X 0, Fv 5-60 X 0, Fv 5-180 X 0, Fv 8 x 0 or Fv 9 x 0.

[0042] Other suitable examples of hydrocarbon component CH which may be used in the context of the invention, other than bitumens, are hydrocarbon oils. Such oils may be mineral oils, synthetic oils, fluxed oils, alkanes, such as cylinder oil, marketed by TOTAL under the reference 1000 N. When an oil is used, it is preferably neutral or basic.

[0043] The hydrocarbon component CHpreferably has a kinematic viscosity at 60 °C in the range of 50 to 20,000 mm 2 < / s, preferably in the range of 50 to 150 mm 2 < / s. Such a kinematic viscosity can be measured according to EN 12595. With such a viscosity, the hydrocarbon composition IC comprising the hydroxide XOH and the hydrocarbon component CH can be prepared with traditional agitators, including paddle agitators.

[0044] According to an advantageous characteristic, the hydrocarbon component CHhas a light transmittance at a wavelength of 900 nm of at least 0.03%. This transmittance can be measured using a photometer such as the Hach Lange DR 3900 photometer, in particular with a 1 cm glass optical cuvette. With such a transmittance, it is possible to verify, in particular by visible light microscopy, that the hydroxide XOH is indeed in the form of particles in the hydrocarbon composition IC, and to verify the size of said particles. In particular, it will be verified that the hydroxide XOH is in the composition IC in the form of particles having a maximum size less than or equal to 100 µm, preferably less than or equal to 60 µm and in particular, that they have an average maximum size in the range of 10 to 100 µm, preferably in the range of 20 to 60 µm. Additive(s)

[0045] The pitch compositions according to the invention may comprise exclusively a deasphalting pitch and a hydroxide XOH as described in the context of the invention, may comprise exclusively a deasphalting pitch, a hydroxide XOH and a hydrocarbon component CH as described within the scope of the invention, or may also include one or more additives.

[0046] In particular, if the hydroxide XOH is introduced via a hydrocarbon composition IC comprising a hydrocarbon component CH, the pitch composition according to the invention will comprise such a hydrocarbon component CH.

[0047] Also, the invention relates to pitch compositions which comprise, in addition to pitch and hydroxide, a hydrocarbon component. CH,preferably chosen from hydrocarbon oils, soft grade bitumens, fluxed bitumens, fluidized bitumens and their mixtures, in particular those described in the “Hydrocarbon component” section.

[0048] In general, when present, said hydrocarbon component CH preferably represents at most 10% by mass, preferably 0.1 to 10% by mass, more preferably 0.5 to 8% by mass, and even more preferably 1 to 5% by mass, of the total mass of the pitch composition.

[0049] Furthermore, the pitch compositions according to the invention may include one or more additives, the incorporation of which has already been described in bitumen compositions.

[0050] In particular, the pitch compositions according to the invention may include an adhesion promoter, in particular chosen from amines, diamines, polyamines, alkyl amido amines, amidopolyamines, imidazolines, and mixtures thereof. Such adhesion promoters are in particular described in application WO 2018 / 206489 to which reference may be made for further details.

[0051] In particular, such an adhesion promoter is chosen from: (i) Amines of formula (I): wherein: R is a saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, optionally branched or cyclic hydrocarbon group comprising 8 to 24 carbon atoms, for example, R is a hydrocarbon group derived from soot fatty acids or tall oil fatty acids; and R 1 and R 2 , which may be the same or different, are a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon group comprising from 1 to 24 carbon atoms; R 1 and R 2 are preferably a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; ii) Diamines and polyamines of formula (II): R-(NH-L)n-NH 2 (II) in which: R is as defined for (I), L represents a linear or branched hydrocarbon chain comprising from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, for example L is -(CH 2 )m- with m = 1, 2 or 3 and, n is an integer greater than or equal to 1, in particular, n is equal to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6, iii) Alkyl amido amines of formula (III): in which R, R 1 , R 2 and L are as defined for (I) and (II); iv) The amidopolyamines of formula (IV) and the imidazolines: RCO-(NH-L)p-NH 2 (IV) in which R and L are as defined for (I) and (II), and p is an integer greater than or equal to 1, in particular p is an integer in the range 1 to 10.

[0052] Advantageously, the adhesion promoter is selected from amines, diamines, polyamines, alkyl amido amines and amidopolyamines comprising a fatty chain, and in particular from those previously described. In particular, the adhesion promoter is an amidopolyamine comprising a fatty chain, of formula: RCO-[NH-L]p-NH 2 (IV) where: p is an integer greater than or equal to 1, in particular p is an integer in the range from 1 to 10, L represents a linear or branched hydrocarbon chain comprising from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, for example L is -(CH 2 )m- with m = 1, 2 or 3, R is a saturated or unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, optionally branched or cyclic hydrocarbon group, comprising 8 to 24 carbon atoms.

[0053] Preferably, the adhesion promoter used in the pitch compositions according to the invention is a mixture of amidopolyamines of formula (IV) in which p is an integer in the range from 1 to 10, L is -(CH 2 ) 2 -, and R corresponds to the hydrocarbon chains of the fatty acids of tall oil.

[0054] In general, when present, said adhesion promoter preferably represents 0.01 to 2% by mass, preferably 0.05% to 1% by mass, and even more preferably 0.1 to 0.3% by mass, of the total mass of the pitch composition according to the invention.

[0055] It is also possible to include, as is done, in certain bitumen compositions, one or more polymers.

[0056] The pitch compositions according to the invention may include an agent (called a temperature reducing agent) for lowering the temperature at which the pitch compositions according to the invention can be used satisfactorily, as a binder. Examples of temperature reducers that may be mentioned include tall oil derivatives, taken alone or in a mixture with a monoester of a mixture of fatty acids, such as those described in WO 2010 / 134024. Mention may also be made, as suitable additives according to the invention, of the additives described in WO 2012 / 049579 and in WO 2014 / 095995. Preferably, agents sold in particular by Arkema, under the reference Cecabase RT bio 10, are used.

[0057] In general, when present, said temperature reducer preferably represents 0.01 to 3% by mass, and preferably 0.05 to 0.3% by mass, of the total mass of the pitch composition according to the invention. Process for preparing the pitch compositions according to the invention

[0058] The pitch compositions of the invention may be prepared by any suitable method well known to those skilled in the art. Typically, such methods include mixing the components and heating the mixture.

[0059] The hydroxide may be directly introduced into an initial pitch composition, either directly in the form of a powder or in the form of a solution in a suitable solvent. Examples of solvents for solubilizing the hydroxide include water or methanol. The hydroxide may be present in such a solution, for example, at a concentration of 10 to 50% by mass relative to the total mass of the solution. A suitable solvent will preferably have a boiling point of less than or equal to 100°C at 1013.3 hPa. It will preferably be chosen such that it evaporates spontaneously when the hydroxide solution is incorporated into the initial pitch composition.

[0060] Whether it is introduced directly in the form of a powder or a solution in a suitable solvent, the quantity introduced is selected so as to ultimately obtain in the pitch composition according to the invention, a quantity of hydroxide which represents from 0.001 to 1% by mass, preferably 0.002 to 0.5% by mass, and preferentially from 0.01 to 0.5% by mass, of the total mass of the pitch composition obtained.

[0061] Advantageously, the hydroxide is introduced into an initial pitch composition in the form of a powder of particles having a maximum size of less than or equal to 100 µm, preferably less than or equal to 60 µm. Even more preferably, the hydroxide is introduced into an initial pitch composition in the form of a powder of particles having an average maximum size in the range from 10 to 100 µm, preferably from 20 to 60 µm. An anhydrous powder will preferably be used. The average maximum particle size corresponds to the arithmetic mean of the maximum sizes of a set of particles, preferably at least 20 particles, and in particular 20 particles. The maximum size can be measured by microscopy. The size of the particles introduced can be adjusted by different techniques, in particular by grinding and / or sieving.

[0062] According to a preferred embodiment, the hydroxide, in particular in the form of particles, is introduced using a hydrocarbon composition IC.

[0063] Such a hydrocarbon composition IC includes, or even consists exclusively of, hydroxide distributed in a hydrocarbon component CH as previously described.

[0064] In particular, the hydroxide preferably represents 15 to 50% and preferentially 15 to 25% by mass of the total mass of the hydrocarbon composition. IC. In a similar manner to what is described in the case of direct introduction of the hydroxide into the initial pitch composition, the hydroxide can be introduced into the hydrocarbon component CH, directly in the form of a powder or in the form of a solution in a suitable solvent. But, advantageously, the hydroxide is introduced into the hydrocarbon composition IC,in the form of a powder of particles having a maximum size less than or equal to 100 µm, preferably less than or equal to 60 µm. Even more preferably, the hydroxide is introduced into the hydrocarbon composition IC, in the form of a powder of particles having an average maximum size in the range of 10 to 100 µm, preferably of 20 to 60 µm. An anhydrous powder will preferably be used.

[0065] Advantageously, the hydrocarbon component CH, of the hydrocarbon composition IC,has a light transmittance, at a wavelength of 900 nm, of at least 0.03%. Such transmittance can be measured using a photometer such as a Hack Lange DR 3900 photometer, in particular one having a 1 cm glass cell. With such a transmittance, it is possible to check by microscopy, and in particular by visible light microscopy, that the hydroxide does indeed form particles in the desired size range, in the hydrocarbon composition IC. In general, when the hydroxide is incorporated into the hydrocarbon composition IC, in the form of particles of a given size, this size is conserved or substantially conserved in the hydrocarbon composition IC. Most often, in powder as in hydrocarbon composition IC,the hydroxide particles are not spherical and have irregular shapes. When we talk about particle size in the context of the invention, we therefore mean the maximum size which corresponds to the largest dimension which can be measured, in particular using a microscope. This size can be directly measured on the composition IC, if the transmittance of the hydrocarbon component CH is sufficient.

[0066] Particularly in the hydrocarbon composition IC, the hydroxide forms particles of which at least 80% by number have a maximum size in the range from 10 to 100 µm, preferably in the range from 20 to 60 µm and / or which have a maximum size less than or equal to 100 µm, preferably less than or equal to 60 µm. Even more preferably, the hydroxide XOH is found in the composition ICin the form of particles having an average maximum size in the range of 10 to 100 µm, preferably in the range of 20 to 60 µm. On the other hand, the size of the hydroxide particles cannot be verified in the pitch composition according to the invention.

[0067] Furthermore, the use of a hydrocarbon composition IC including hydroxide, helps protect the hydroxide against humidity and promote its storage, before its introduction into the initial pitch composition.

[0068] Advantageously, such a hydrocarbon composition ICcomprises a hydrocarbon component having a kinematic viscosity at 60 °C measured according to EN 12595 in the range of 50 to 20,000 mm 2 < / s, preferably in the range of 50 to 150 mm 2 < / s. With such viscosities, the preparation of such a composition and the introduction of the hydroxide require a conventional mixing device, such as paddle stirrers.

[0069] In particular, the preparation of a hydrocarbon composition IC can be carried out by mixing the hydrocarbon component CHand hydroxide at a temperature in the range of 30 to 220°C, preferably in the range of 40 to 190°C and / or with stirring in the range of 300 to 800 rpm, preferably in the range of 500 to 650 rpm and / or for a period of 10 to 120 minutes, preferably 10 to 20 minutes. The mixing parameters and the temperature will be adjusted by a person skilled in the art, depending on the hydrocarbon component CH selected.

[0070] When preparing such a hydrocarbon composition IC, the hydrocarbon component CH may be heated to a temperature at which it is in a liquid state, so as to promote the incorporation and distribution of the hydroxide. For example, a temperature just sufficient to achieve fusion of the hydrocarbon component CHmay be used, especially when the hydroxide is introduced in the form of a powder. When the hydroxide is introduced in the form of a solution in a solvent, preferably the hydrocarbon component CH will be subjected to suitable heating to obtain the spontaneous evaporation of the solvent, simultaneously with the incorporation of the hydroxide solution.

[0071] When the hydroxide is introduced through a hydrocarbon composition IC, the quantity present in this composition will determine the quantity of hydrocarbon composition IC introduced. In fact, this hydrocarbon composition ICis introduced in such a quantity into the initial pitch composition, so as to finally obtain in the pitch composition according to the invention, a quantity of hydroxide which represents from 0.001 to 1% by mass, preferably from 0.002 to 0.5% by mass, and preferentially, from 0.01 to 0.5% by mass, of the total mass of the pitch composition obtained.

[0072] In general, the mass percentage of hydroxide in the hydrocarbon composition IC is at least 30 times equal to the mass percentage of hydroxide in the final pitch composition and, preferably, at most 100 times equal to the mass percentage of hydroxide in the final pitch composition according to the invention.

[0073] The process for preparing the pitch compositions according to the invention may include the preparation of a hydrocarbon composition IC,when such a composition is used to introduce the hydroxide into the initial pitch composition. It is also possible that the process for preparing the pitch compositions according to the invention comprises a step of storing the hydrocarbon composition IC for at least one hour and for example for a period of 1 to 30 days, in particular at a temperature in the range of 10 to 40°C and, preferably, at a temperature in the range of 20 to 30°C, and, in particular in ambient air. The hydrocarbon composition IC is quite stable under such conditions, so that the same hydrocarbon composition IC with specific characteristics can be used for the preparation of several pitch compositions. In addition, the hydrocarbon composition IC can be stored and transported without special precautions, unlike hydroxide XOH.

[0074] According to embodiments, which can be combined with the previous ones, before the addition of the hydroxide to the initial pitch composition, the method according to the invention can comprise a step of verification, for example by microscopy, and advantageously by visible light microscopy, that the hydroxide forms particles in the hydrocarbon composition. IC with at least 80% by number of said particles having a maximum size in the range from 10 to 100 µm and preferably in the range from 20 to 60 µm and / or that said particles have a maximum size less than or equal to 100 µm, preferably less than or equal to 60 µm. Even more preferably, the method according to the invention may comprise a step of verifying, for example by microscopy, and advantageously by visible light microscopy, that the hydroxide XOH is present in the composition ICin the form of particles having an average maximum size in the range of 10 to 100 µm, preferably in the range of 20 to 60 µm.

[0075] When an intermediate composition IC is used, before its introduction into the initial pitch composition, the hydrocarbon composition IC will preferably be heated to a temperature in the range of 30 to 50°C, preferably in the range of 40 to 50°C, advantageously with stirring and, in particular, with stirring at 300 to 1000 rpm, preferably with stirring at 400 to 800 rpm and / or for a time of 10 to 120 minutes and preferably for a time of 10 to 20 minutes. A low temperature, preferably 40 to 50°C, is also advantageous, to promote control of the size of the hydroxide XOH particles.

[0076] Such a temperature is, in particular, used when the hydrocarbon component CHhas a kinematic viscosity at 60°C in the range of 20 to 20,000 mm 2 < / s, preferably in the range of 50 to 150 mm 2 < / s. Again, the mixing parameters and temperature will be adjusted by the person skilled in the art depending on the hydrocarbon component CH selected.

[0077] Conventionally, hydroxide, whether introduced directly in the form of a powder, a solution or a hydrocarbon composition IC, will be done, in the initial pitch composition, under mixing and heating. In general, the initial pitch composition will be heated under stirring, before the hydroxide is incorporated. The mixing and heating parameters will be adjusted by the person skilled in the art according to the properties of the pitch used.

[0078] The incorporation of hydroxide particles, whether in the form of a powder, a solution or a hydrocarbon composition IC,may, in particular, be carried out by mixing at a temperature in the range from 150 to 220°C, preferably at a temperature in the range from 160 to 190°C and / or with stirring in the range from 100 to 500 rpm, preferably in the range from 200 to 400 rpm and / or for a period of 10 to 180 minutes, preferably for a period of 10 to 20 minutes. Here again, the stirring and mixing parameters will be adjusted by a person skilled in the art depending in particular on the components selected. The mixing and heating may be continued for a period of time after incorporation, in particular at a temperature in the range of 150 to 220°C, preferably at a temperature in the range of 160 to 190°C and / or with stirring in the range of 100 to 500 rpm, and / or for a period of 10 to 240 minutes.

[0079] Regardless of the embodiment used, the final pitch composition may correspond to the composition directly obtained at the end of step b. When the pitch composition includes one or more additives, this (these) additive(s) may be incorporated into the pitch composition, before the introduction of the hydroxide or introduced after the hydroxide. When the composition comprises several additives, it is also possible that one or other of the additives is already present and that one or more other additive(s) is (are) introduced after. According to a preferred embodiment, the method according to the invention comprises, after step b, an additional step corresponding to the addition of an additive leading to a final pitch composition.

[0080] In particular, when the final pitch composition comprises an adhesion promoter as described in the context of the invention, such an adhesion promoter is preferably introduced in a step c, subsequent to step b after the introduction of the hydroxide.

[0081] In the method according to the invention, the initial pitch composition is the composition comprising the pitch into which the hydroxide is introduced. The latter may consist exclusively of pitch, a mixture of pitch with one or more additives and / or a bitumen base. The components of the initial pitch composition will be present in quantities adapted to obtain the desired quantities in the pitch composition according to the invention. Although this is not preferred, it is not excluded that the initial pitch composition comprises a bitumen, and in particular a hard grade bitumen, in particular of grade 10 / 20 or 15 / 25 defined by standard 13924-1 or 20 / 30 or 30 / 45 or 35 / 50 defined by standard EN 12591, but in limited quantities, so that in the end, the pitch represents at least 50% by mass, and preferably at least 80% by mass, and preferentially at least 90% by mass, of the total mass of the pitch composition obtained. In particular, the absence of a hard grade bitumen in the initial pitch composition makes it possible to produce only one tank mix, with the incorporation of the hydroxide being able to be carried out directly in-line. Compositions according to the invention - preferred embodiments

[0082] The invention relates to modified pitch compositions comprising a deasphalting pitch and a hydroxide XOH as described in the context of the invention. Said compositions may also include one or more additives, in particular as previously described. Furthermore, although these embodiments are not preferred, it is possible for the compositions according to the invention to comprise a hard grade bitumen, in particular of grade 10 / 20 or 15 / 25 defined by standard 13924-1 or 20 / 30 or 30 / 45 or 35 / 50 defined by standard EN 12591. Preferably, when present, such a hard grade bitumen represents at most 20% by mass of the total mass of the pitch composition according to the invention.

[0091] The compositions obtained by mixing the different components listed, in the given proportions, or even obtained by mixing only the different components listed, in the given proportions, also form an integral part of the invention. Use and implementation of the pitch compositions according to the invention

[0092] Various uses of the compositions according to the invention are envisaged. In particular, the compositions according to the invention can be used as a binder to replace bitumen. As a binder, a composition according to the invention can be used to prepare an association with aggregates, in particular road aggregates. With regard to road applications, the invention relates in particular to asphalt mixes as materials for the construction and maintenance of road surfaces and their surfacing, as well as for carrying out all road works.

[0093] By asphalt is meant a mixture of a binder with aggregates and optionally mineral and / or synthetic fillers. The asphalt comprises a composition as described in the context of the invention, as binder and optionally mineral and / or synthetic fillers, preferably chosen from fines, sand, gravel and recycled millings. The aggregates are mineral and / or synthetic aggregates, in particular recycled millings, with dimensions greater than 2 mm, preferably between 2 mm and 20 mm.

[0094] Also, the invention also relates to a process for preparing a coating comprising the hot mixing of a composition according to the invention, with aggregates, and optionally mineral and / or synthetic fillers.

[0095] A composition according to the invention can advantageously be used to prepare a surface coating, a hot mix, a cold mix, a cold-poured mix or a gravel emulsion. With regard to road applications, the invention also relates to asphalts as materials for manufacturing and covering sidewalks.

[0096] Asphalt is understood to mean a mixture of binder with mineral and / or synthetic fillers. An asphalt comprises a composition as described in the context of the invention and mineral fillers such as fines, sand or gravel and / or synthetic fillers. The mineral fillers consist of fines (particles with dimensions less than 0.063 mm), sand (particles with dimensions between 0.063 mm and 2 mm) and possibly gravel (particles with dimensions greater than 2 mm, preferably between 2 mm and 4 mm). Asphalts have 100% compaction and are mainly used to manufacture and cover sidewalks, whereas asphalts have a compaction of less than 100% and are used to manufacture roads. Unlike asphalts, asphalts are not compacted by roller during their installation.

[0097] Also, the invention also relates to a process for preparing an asphalt comprising the hot mixing of a composition according to the invention, with mineral and / or synthetic fillers.

[0098] Another aspect of the invention relates to the use of a composition according to the invention in various industrial applications, in particular for preparing a waterproofing coating, a membrane or an impregnation layer. With regard to the industrial applications of the compositions according to the invention, mention may be made of the manufacture of waterproofing membranes, noise-reducing membranes, insulation membranes, surface coverings, carpet tiles, impregnation layers.

[0099] The following examples illustrate the invention, but are not limiting in nature. Reagents

[0100] The sodium hydroxide was anhydrous and its purity was greater than 99%, it came in the form of pellets (CARL ROTH GMBH & Co. KG, Item No. 9356.1).

[0101] The pitch was obtained from a vacuum distillation residue, first heated to 67°C, subjected to a pressure of 3.4 MPa, and after carrying out a propane extraction, the propane being added at a temperature of 36°C. Its CAS number is 91995232.

[0102] The pitch used has a CCR content of 30%, a PAH content (16 types of compounds classified as priorities according to the US-EPA) of 15 ppm and a density d25°C of 1.08, determined according to the methods mentioned above in the description.

[0103] The H1 adhesion promoter was an amine additive: WETFIX BE from Akzo Nobel Surface Chemistry AB (CAS 68910-93-0).

[0104] The fluxed bitumen was marketed by TOTAL under the reference SOFT ®< BITUMEN. It had a kinematic viscosity at 60°C according to standard EN 12595 of 90 mm 2< / s. Its transmittance, measured at 900 nm with the Hach Lange DR 3900 photometer with a 1 cm glass optical cell, was 0.1%. Evaluation of pitch compositions

[0105] In the following examples, the compositions were evaluated by: the measurement of needle penetrability at 25°C (abbreviation: Pene), according to EN 1426, the results being expressed in 1 / 10 mm, the measurement of the ring-ball softening temperature (abbreviation: TBA), according to EN 1427, the results being expressed in °C, The penetrability index (unitless) according to DIN EN 1427 Appendix B, RTFOT + PAV: The resistance of the compositions to hardening and aging was tested respectively according to DIN EN 12607-1 and DIN EN 12607-1 and EN 14769. The European standard DIN EN 12607-1 specifies the method for measuring the combined effects of heat and air on a thin film of a composition in constant renewal (RTFOT from the English "Rolling Thin Film Oven Test"). RTFOT aging was carried out at a temperature of 163°C, for 75 minutes and under an air flow rate of 4 liters / min.The European standards DIN EN 12607-1 + EN 14769 specify the method of long-term accelerated aging carried out in a pressure aging vessel (RTFOT + PAV); aging under RTFOT was carried out under the conditions given above and that under PAV at a temperature of 100°C, for 20 hours and at a pressure of 2100 kPa. Examples a) Preparation of a hydrocarbon composition IC

[0106] The sodium hydroxide pellets were ground into a fine powder using an IKA ®< A11 mill (IKA-Werke GmbH & Co) at 28,000 rpm for about 30 seconds. Thus, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) particles were obtained. Their average maximum size measured on 20 particles under a microscope was about 50 µm. At the same time, 500 g of the fluxed bitumen were heated to 50 °C in a reactor with a diameter d = 16 cm and stirred at 600 rpm with a dissolving plate stirrer (diameter D of the active mechanical part), with D / d = 0.4. The temperature was controlled using a thermostat. 95.24 g of sodium hydroxide powder were suspended in the fluxed bitumen under stirring and stirring was maintained for 30 minutes. In the composition IC obtained, the mass % of NaOH was 16%, based on the total mass of the composition IC obtained. The composition ICobtained was observed by microscopy under visible light, which showed that the soda was indeed in the form of particles of which more than 80% had a maximum size less than or equal to 50 µm. b) Preparation of the modified pitch composition

[0107] The composition IC previously prepared was heated up to a maximum of 50 °C (the viscosity of the fluxed bitumen decreases at higher temperatures, which would result in a higher settling rate of NaOH) under stirring in a reactor with a stirrer as described in part a) (D / d = 0.4) at 600 rpm to homogenize.

[0108] In parallel, 2500 g of pitch was heated to 180 °C in a reactor and stirred using a stirrer as described in part a) (D / d = 0.4) at nearly 400 rpm to homogenize the pitch. The prepared composition IC was directly added to the pitch (3.23 g of composition ICper 100 g of pitch = 3.13% by mass in the final pitch composition). At the end of the addition of the composition IC, stirring was continued for 30 minutes.

[0109] The mixture was then kept for 3 hours under stirring conditions at 600 rpm. The temperature of the mixture was controlled not to exceed 170 °C. Samples were regularly taken from the reactor to measure their TBA and Pene. The mixture was stopped when both were stabilized. Then, the mixture was cooled to 160 °C and 5.04 g of the H1 adhesion promoter was added. The mixture was kept for 20 minutes. In the final pitch composition, the mass% of NaOH was 0.500%, H1 adhesion promoter 0.194% by mass and cutback bitumen 2.623% by mass, based on the total mass of the pitch composition.

[0110] Table 1 below shows the TBA and Pene, before and after RTFOT+PAV, for the pitch alone and for the pitch composition according to the invention. Table 1 BRAI reference BRAI Modified H1 BRAI Invention TBA DIN EN 1427 °C 64,8 64,6 65,2 Bolt DIN EN 1426 mm / 10 7 8 9 Penetrability index EN1427-Appendix B -1,6 -1,5 -1,2 RTFOT and PAV aging resistance DIN EN 12607-1+14769 TBA DIN EN 1427 °C 73,2 73,4 70,6 Change TBA DIN EN 1427 °C 8,4 8,6 5,4 Bolt DIN EN 1426 mm / 10 6 6 8 Pene Maintenance DIN EN 1426 % 86 75 89

[0111] These results show that the addition of soda makes it possible to obtain an increase in the penetrability index. In particular, the penetrability index obtained complies with the road specifications imposed by standard EN 1427-Appendix B. The value of -1.6, obtained in the absence of the incorporation of soda, is too low and is not acceptable.

[0112] Furthermore, as a complement, measurements carried out on a pitch modified only by the addition of 0.194% by mass of H1 adhesion promoter (modified pitch H1) show that the stability of TBA and Pene after RTFOT and PAV is less identical, or even less good in the case of Pene, to that obtained for the reference pitch.
