Description

Title of the invention: Magnetic card reader comprising a fixed magnetic reading head

[0001] The invention relates to the field of magnetic card readers as well as to electronic payment terminals comprising such magnetic card readers.

[0002] To obtain satisfactory reading of a magnetic stripe of a magnetic card by a magnetic card reader, it is necessary that when the magnetic card passes through the reader, the magnetic reading head is in contact with the magnetic stripe of the magnetic card and that this contact is of good quality. Since magnetic cards are rigid, deformable means for moving the magnetic reading head making it possible to press the magnetic reading head against the magnetic card when the latter slides in a guide member of the magnetic card reader have thus been developed. The force applied to the magnetic reading head by these deformable means of moving the magnetic reading head must be calculated so as to avoid significantly increasing the force required to pass the magnetic card through the card reader in order to avoid a user of the device feeling a blocking sensation when passing the magnetic card through the reader.

[0003] Such magnetic card readers have disadvantages. First of all, they are fragile. Indeed, due to the presence of a displacement of the magnetic reading head, the electronic connection between this magnetic reading head and an electronic card of the magnetic card reader is made using a flexible printed circuit which, by nature, is fragile. In addition, such flexible printed circuits are expensive and complex to integrate during the assembly of the reader. Beyond the flexible printed circuits, the deformable means for moving the head also comprise parts that are expensive, fragile and complex to implement during assembly. In particular, they must be adapted to each type of magnetic reading head. In addition, it is necessary to provide protection against the electromagnetic environment and this is complicated to implement since the magnetic reading head regularly changes position.

[0004] The invention aims in particular to provide a magnetic card reader making it possible to reliably read the data present on a magnetic card and which is robust and simple and economical to manufacture.

[0005] To this end, the invention relates to a magnetic card reader comprising: - an electronic card intended to receive and process data coming from a magnetic card, - a magnetic reading head intended to read data contained in at least one magnetic stripe of a magnetic card and to transmit this data to the electronic card, - a magnetic card passage zone in which a magnetic card is intended to slide and comprising guide means intended to guide the magnetic card when the magnetic card slides in the passage zone, characterized in that the magnetic reading head is fixedly mounted on the magnetic card reader, and in that the guide means comprise elastic deformation means intended to come into contact with the magnetic card in order to deform it when the magnetic card slides in the passage zone so as to allow reading of the magnetic strip of the magnetic card by the magnetic reading head.

[0006] Thus, the fact that the magnetic reading head is fixedly mounted on the reader makes it possible to avoid the need for flexible printed circuits for the connection between the magnetic reading head and the electronic card, which reduces manufacturing costs and facilitates the assembly of the magnetic card reader during its manufacture. In addition, the magnetic card reader thus obtained is also more robust due to the absence of a flexible printed circuit and deformable means for moving the head. The deformable means for moving the head are in fact fragile elements that are complex to implement on the reader.

[0007] The fact that the elastic means for deforming the magnetic card are part of the guide means is advantageous because it is a part of the magnetic card reader which can easily be modified to be adapted to the different types of magnetic cards or magnetic reading heads used in order to obtain a desired force to be applied to the magnetic card.

[0008] A magnetic card is an electronic card equipped with a magnetic strip on which data is stored by magnetic recording. The magnetic strip of this magnetic card can thus be read by a magnetic reading head in order to obtain the information stored in this magnetic card and possibly transmit it to an electronic card which can then process this data. Magnetic cards are used, for example, as bank cards, parking access cards, identification cards, or even access cards for secure rooms.

[0009] The invention may also include one or more of the following optional features, taken alone or in combination.

[0010] The magnetic reading head is soldered onto the electronic card. The assembly of the magnetic reading head is thus facilitated since it is directly linked to the electronic card by soldering, without an intermediary. The elimination of these intermediaries not only facilitates assembly but also reduces manufacturing costs and makes the device more robust since, with the total number of parts in the device decreasing, the overall risk of wear is reduced. In addition, the fact that the magnetic reading head is directly welded onto the electronic card improves the security of the magnetic card reader because fraudulent interception of data passing from the magnetic reading head to the electronic card is then more complicated. This interception is made more complicated by the more direct link between the magnetic reading head and the electronic card, but also by the fact that the electronic card then forms a barrier covering part of the magnetic reading head and thus limiting access to it.It is also easy to plan to strengthen the security of the device by adding a mesh to a layer of the electronic card designed to detect an attempt to pierce a layer of the electronic card in order to secure the transmission of data between the magnetic reading head and the electronic card.

[0011] The elastic deformation means comprise at least one support member intended to exert at least one pressure against at least one portion of the magnetic card so as to deform it so that the magnetic strip of the magnetic card is in contact with the magnetic reading head over its entire length when the magnetic card slides in the passage zone. Thus, it is the deformation of the magnetic card and not the movement of the magnetic reading head which ensures permanent contact between the magnetic strip of the magnetic card and the magnetic reading head when the magnetic card slides in the passage zone.It is noted that the deformation of the magnetic card is such that the magnetic track is in contact with the magnetic reading head over its entire length, that is to say that the magnetic track is pressed into contact with the magnetic reading head by the support member from one of its longitudinal ends and then slides so that the magnetic track travels over its entire length along the magnetic reading head to its other longitudinal end. This ensures that the entire magnetic track has been correctly read by the magnetic reading head.

[0012] The support member is intended to provide support against a portion of the magnetic card located opposite the magnetic reading head so as to press the magnetic strip of the magnetic card against the magnetic reading head. This reduces the passage path at the point where the magnetic strip of the magnetic card is read by the magnetic reading head. This is a simple and effective means of pressing the magnetic strip into contact with the magnetic reading head.

[0013] The support member has a convex shape in the direction of the magnetic reading head and has a surface curvature identical to a surface curvature of the magnetic reading head. Holding the card at the location where the magnetic reading head The magnetic stripe is thus improved. In fact, symmetry is created between the two elements holding the magnetic card on either side, which ensures better stability than if the surface curvatures of the magnetic reading head and the support member were different. In addition, reproducing the shape of the surface curvature of the magnetic reading head on the support member is simple to achieve, so that the support member can be easily modified and adapted according to the magnetic reading heads used.

[0014] The elastic deformation means are configured so that, in the rest position, the support member rests on the magnetic reading head without applying any force to it. Thus, the elastic deformation means do not apply any force at rest, which reduces their wear and therefore increases their service life. Furthermore, the fact that they do not apply any force to the magnetic reading head at rest prevents damage to the latter. In this configuration, it is also certain that, whatever the thickness of the magnetic card, it will stress the elastic deformation means when it slides at the level of the magnetic reading head so that its magnetic reading track is pressed against the magnetic reading head.According to alternative embodiments, it can be provided that the elastic deformation means are configured so that, in the rest position, the support member extends opposite and at a predetermined distance from the magnetic reading head. This predetermined distance is in particular defined as being less than a thickness of a magnetic card intended to slide in the passage zone comprising these elastic deformation means so that the magnetic card stresses the elastic deformation means when sliding in this passage zone.

[0015] The elastic deformation means comprise two support members intended to exert pressure against two portions of the magnetic card situated on either side of the magnetic reading head so as to press the magnetic strip of the magnetic card against the magnetic reading head. These two supports on either side of the magnetic reading head create three regions of deformation of the magnetic card, namely the two portions of the magnetic card where the support members exert pressure and the portion of the magnetic card, comprising the magnetic strip, which is pressed against the magnetic reading head in order to be read by it.These three deformations thus ensure better stability of the card when sliding the magnetic card in the passage zone and also ensure that good quality contact is maintained between the magnetic strip of the magnetic card and the magnetic reading head along the entire length of the magnetic strip during sliding of the magnetic card.

[0016] The elastic deformation means comprise at least three return members elastic intended to return the elastic deformation means to a rest position during or after sliding of the magnetic card in the passage zone. These three elastic return members allow the elastic deformation means to adapt to the way in which a user introduces the magnetic card into the passage area and thus offer a better feeling to the user when the card is passed. Indeed, these three elastic return members make it possible to create a mechanical articulation for the elastic deformation means which can thus compensate for a defect in the alignment of the magnetic card when it is presented in front of the elastic deformation means and prevent the user from feeling a blockage during sliding.

[0017] The invention also relates to an electronic payment terminal comprising a magnetic card reader as described above.

[0018] Advantageously, the area for passing a magnetic card is formed by a slot provided in a lower edge of the electronic payment terminal. Thus, it is possible to provide that the electronic payment terminal has a reduced footprint compared to an electronic payment terminal in which the slot is provided in a side wall of the terminal. In addition, the movement to be carried out to slide the magnetic card into the slot is thus simpler and more ergonomic for the user. Brief description of the figures

[0019] The invention will be better understood on reading the following description given solely by way of non-limiting examples and made with reference to the appended drawings in which:

[0025] Two embodiments of a magnetic card reader 1 2 according to the invention, each integrated into an electronic payment terminal 3 according to the invention.

[0026] The first embodiment is shown in Figures 1 to 4. The electronic payment terminal 3 therefore comprises the magnetic card reader 1 according to the invention as well as a conventional chip card reader 4 (see [Fig. 1]). The electronic payment terminal 3 comprises two lateral edges, an upper edge and a lower edge. The upper and lower edges are understood to be the usual orientations of use of an electronic payment terminal 3. Thus, the upper edge corresponds to the distal edge, that is to say the longitudinal edge furthest from the user when he uses the electronic payment terminal 3 and the lower edge corresponds to the proximal edge, that is to say the longitudinal edge closest to the user when he uses the electronic payment terminal 3.In the present case, in addition to the conventional location of the chip card reader 4 at the lower edge, the magnetic card reader 1 is also located at the lower edge of the electronic payment terminal 3. Of course, according to other embodiments, the terminal may be of a type other than an electronic payment terminal 3, for example a terminal for controlling access to a parking lot, an identification terminal, or a terminal for controlling access to a secure room.

[0027] The magnetic card reader 1 comprises in particular an electronic card 5, a magnetic reading head 6, a zone 7 for passing a magnetic card 2 and means 8 for guiding the magnetic card 2 (see [Fig.2]).

[0028] In the present case, the terminal being an electronic payment terminal 3, the magnetic card 2 is a payment card type card. It comprises three magnetic tracks 9 intended for the magnetic storage of data. Of course, the magnetic card 2 can comprise a different number of magnetic tracks 9 depending on the embodiments.

[0029] The electronic card 5 is intended to receive and process data coming from the magnetic card 2, this data being read and transmitted by the magnetic reading head 6.

[0030] The magnetic reading head 6 is intended to read data contained in at least one of the magnetic tracks 9 of the magnetic card 2 and to transmit this data to the electronic card 5 so that it can be processed there. In the present case, the electronic card 2 comprises three magnetic tracks 9 and the magnetic reading head 6 consequently comprises a housing having three air gaps 10 each intended to allow the reading of one of the magnetic tracks 9 of the magnetic card 2. The magnetic reading head 6 is fixedly mounted on the electronic card 5. More particularly, the magnetic reading head 6 is welded directly onto the electronic card 5 (see [Fig. 3]). This avoids the presence of connection intermediaries and consequently reduces production costs while reducing the fragility of the device such connection intermediaries generally include parts sensitive to mechanical wear and fragile such as a flexible printed circuit. Of course, according to alternative embodiments, it can be provided that the magnetic reading head 6 is fixed on the electronic card 2 by any other suitable fixing means.

[0031] The passage zone 7 of the magnetic card 2 is formed by a slot provided in the lower edge of the electronic payment terminal 3. This passage zone 7 is the one in which the magnetic card 2 is intended to slide when a user wishes to use it on the electronic payment terminal 3. This passage zone 7 of the magnetic card 2 comprises the guide means 8 which are intended to guide the magnetic card 2 when it slides into the slot.

[0032] In the present case, the guide means 8 comprise elastic deformation means 11 intended to come into contact with the magnetic card 2 in order to deform it when the magnetic card 2 slides in the passage zone 7 - that is to say in the slot - so as to allow reading of the magnetic tracks 9 of the magnetic card 2 by the magnetic reading head 6.

[0033] Here, the elastic deformation means 11 comprise a single support member 12 which is intended to provide support against a portion of the magnetic card 2 located opposite the magnetic reading head 6 so as to press the three magnetic tracks 9 of the magnetic card 2 against the three air gaps 10 of the magnetic reading head 6 in order to ensure good quality contact between these elements. In [Fig. 2], the magnetic card 2 is shown at a stage of its sliding in the passage zone 7 where it has not yet reached the support member 12 and has not yet been deformed by the elastic deformation means 11. The support member 12 has a convex shape in the direction of the magnetic reading head 6 and has a surface curvature identical to the surface curvature of the magnetic reading head 6.As indicated previously, this configuration is advantageous for improving the retention of the magnetic card 2 in the passage zone 7. In the rest position (see [Fig.2]), the elastic deformation means 11 are configured so that the support member 12 rests on the magnetic reading head 6 without applying any force to it. As can be seen in [Fig.2], at rest, there is therefore contact between the support member 12 and the magnetic reading head 6, which makes it possible to relieve the support member 12. However, since the force applied by the support member 12 to the magnetic reading head 6 is zero, the latter is not at risk of being damaged.

[0034] The support member 12 is connected to the rest of the elastic deformation means 11 by means of three elastic return members 13 intended to return the elastic deformation means 11 to a rest position during or after sliding of the magnetic card 2 in the passage zone 7. In the present case, each elastic return member is composed of a pair of elastic tabs 14 each arranged on either side of the support member 12. They exert on this support member 12 a force tending to move it into the rest position, that is to say in the direction of the magnetic reading head 6 when the support member 12 is moved in the opposite direction, which is notably the case when a magnetic card 2 slides in the passage zone 7.

[0035] In the present case, the elastic deformation means 11 are made of plastic materials, for example polyoxymethylene (POM), which are materials having surface roughness and resistance over time properties satisfactory for the desired use.

[0036] It is noted that it is possible to easily adapt the forces applied by the elastic deformation means 11 according to the desired product by modifying, for example, the geometry and / or the materials used for the production of the elastic deformation means 11. This adaptation can be done independently of a possible supplier of the magnetic reading head 6, which is particularly advantageous. Typically, the force applied by the support member 12 against the portion of the magnetic card 2 against which it presses is of the order of 4 Newtons. This force is sufficiently high to allow satisfactory contact between the magnetic card 2 and the magnetic reading head 6 and sufficiently low not to risk damaging the magnetic card 2 and / or the magnetic reading head 6. Of course, this force can be adapted according to the characteristics of the reader 1 and the magnetic card 2.

[0037] The operation of the electronic payment terminal 3 comprising the magnetic card reader 1 2 according to the first embodiment of the invention is described below.

[0038] When a user wishes to make a payment with his magnetic card 2, which is therefore in this case a bank card, he inserts it into the magnetic card 2 passage zone 7 formed by the slot provided in the lower edge of the electronic payment terminal 3 with the magnetic tracks 9 of the magnetic card 2 directed upwards with reference to [Fig. 1]. The user slides the magnetic card 2 in the direction A in this slot and the magnetic card 2 is, initially, guided by guide means 8 formed by the walls of the housing of the electronic payment terminal 3. The magnetic card 2 is in particular supported in the bottom of the slot by its upper edge. The user continues to slide the magnetic card 2 in the direction A and, from the moment when the magnetic card 2 reaches the support member 12 of the elastic deformation means 11, the magnetic card 2 moves this support member 12 against its rest position. and the latter in return exerts, under the effect of the elastic return members 13, a force against the magnetic card 2 so as to deform it and press the portions of the magnetic tracks 9 which pass opposite the air gaps 10 of the magnetic reading head 6 against these air gaps 10. Thanks to this contact between the magnetic tracks 9 and the air gaps 10, a good reading quality of the magnetic tracks 9 is obtained. The elastic deformation means 11 are configured so that the force applied to the magnetic card 2 is high enough to deform the magnetic card 2 sufficiently so as to establish satisfactory contact with the magnetic reading head 6 and not too high to avoid creating for the user a sensation of a stop or discontinuity in the sliding movement of the magnetic card 2.Such a discontinuity in the sliding movement, beyond being detrimental to the user experience, would also harm the quality of the reading of the magnetic card 2. Throughout the sliding of the magnetic card 2, the support member 12 successively presses a portion of the magnetic tracks 9 opposite the air gaps 10 of the magnetic reading heads 6 so that at the end of the sliding, the three magnetic tracks 9 have each been read over their entire length. Once the support member 12 is no longer moved by the magnetic card 2, the elastic return members 13 return it to the rest position so that the support member 12 is ready to press another magnetic card 2 against the magnetic reading head 6. The data that has been read by the magnetic reading head 6 is transmitted directly to the electronic card 5 which can process it in a known manner.

[0039] An electronic payment terminal 3 is described below with reference to [Fig. 5]. comprising a magnetic card 2 reader 1 according to a second embodiment of the invention. For the sake of clarity, the homologous elements between the two embodiments are designated by the same numerical reference. For the second embodiment, only the differences compared to the first embodiment are described below.

[0040] The magnetic card reader 1 according to the second embodiment differs from the magnetic card reader 1 of the first embodiment only by its elastic deformation means 11.

[0041] According to the second embodiment, the elastic deformation means 11 comprise two support members 12 intended to bear against two portions of the magnetic card 2 located on either side of the magnetic reading head 6 so as to press the magnetic tracks 9 of the magnetic card 2 against the air gaps 10 of the magnetic reading head 6 (see [Fig. 5]). These two supports on either side of the magnetic reading head 6 create three regions of deformation of the magnetic card 2, namely the two portions of the magnetic card 2 where the support members 12 bear and the portion of the magnetic card 2, comprising the tracks 9 ma magnetic, which is pressed against the air gaps 10 of the magnetic reading head 6. These three deformations thus ensure better stability of the magnetic card 2 when sliding in the slot and also ensure that good quality contact is maintained between the magnetic tracks 9 of the magnetic card 2 and the magnetic reading head 6 over the entire length of the magnetic tracks 9 during the sliding of the magnetic card 2 in front of the magnetic reading head 6. The deformation caused by the elastic deformation means 11 results in the application of a force of the order of 4 Newtons on the portion of the magnetic card 2 which is pressed against the magnetic reading head 6. This force is high enough to allow satisfactory contact between the magnetic card 2 and the magnetic reading head and low enough to avoid the risk of damaging the magnetic card 2 and / or the magnetic reading head 6.Of course, this effort can be adapted according to the characteristics of reader 1 and magnetic card 2.

[0042] The operation of the electronic payment terminal 3 comprising the magnetic card reader 1 2 according to the second embodiment of the invention is described below.

[0043] When a user wishes to make a payment with his magnetic card 2, which is therefore in this case a bank card, he inserts it into the magnetic card 2 passage zone 7 formed by the slot provided in the lower edge of the electronic payment terminal 3 with the magnetic tracks 9 of the magnetic card 2 directed upwards with reference to [Fig. 1]. The user slides the magnetic card 2 in the direction A in this slot and the magnetic card 2 is, initially, guided by guide means 8 which are formed by the walls of the housing of the electronic payment terminal 3. The magnetic card 2 is in particular supported in the bottom of the slot by its upper edge. The user continues to slide the magnetic card 2 in the direction A and, from the moment when the magnetic card 2 reaches the first of the two support members 12 of the elastic deformation means 11, the magnetic card 2 moves this support member 12 against its rest position and the latter exerts in return, under the effect of the elastic return members 13, a force against the magnetic card 2 so as to deform it and exert pressure against a portion of the magnetic card 2 located offset from the reading head ([Fig. 3]). The user continues to slide the magnetic card 2 in the slot. The deformation caused by the first support member 12 is then already sufficient to press the magnetic tracks 9 against the air gaps 10 of the magnetic reading head 6 when the magnetic tracks 9 arrive opposite these air gaps 10.The user continues to slide the magnetic card 2 into the slot so that the magnetic card 2 moves the second support member 12 against its rest position and the latter exerts . in return, under the effect of the elastic return members 13, a force against the magnetic card 2 so as to deform it and produce a support against a second portion of the magnetic card 2 located offset from the magnetic reading head 6. Thus, in this configuration, the two support members 12 produce supports on portions of the magnetic card 2 located on either side of the magnetic reading head 6. It is in this configuration that the application of pressure on the magnetic card 2 in order to maintain contact between the magnetic tracks 9 and the air gaps 10 of the magnetic reading head 6 is of better quality. The user then finishes sliding the magnetic card 2 into the slot so that the magnetic tracks 9 will each have been read over their entire length by the magnetic reading head 6.The data read by the magnetic reading head 6 is then transmitted to the electronic card 5 to which it is welded, which processes it in a known manner. In this embodiment, the force applied by the support members 12 being distributed over two support members 12, the sliding of the magnetic card 2 in the slot is thus facilitated and more fluid.

[0044] The invention is not limited to the embodiments presented and other embodiments will become clear to those skilled in the art. List of references
