Description

Title of the invention: Hair treatment compositions that impart shine and luster. SCOPE OF DISCLOSURE

[0001] This disclosure relates to hair treatment compositions that impart desirable shine and luster to hair, and to hair treatment methods for imparting shine and luster to hair and enhancing existing shine and luster. Whether the hair treatment compositions are rinsed from the hair as a rinse-out product or left on the hair as a leave-in product, they impart a noticeable light and shimmering finish to the hair. CONTEXT

[0002] Hair loses its natural shine for a variety of reasons. In low-humidity conditions, hair becomes dehydrated, making it less shiny and more brittle. Loss of shine can also result from repeated chemical treatments. Even regular washing tends to negatively impact natural shine due to the removal of natural oils. Shampoos contain anionic surfactants with cleansing properties to remove contamination from the hair, but inevitably, the process is indiscriminate and removes beneficial natural oils. Loss of shine due to any number of these various situations can damage hair and give it a dull, lifeless appearance.

[0003] The application of styling products with film-forming properties has been used to coat the hair and prevent external damage while preventing the removal of natural oils, etc., from the hair. Although such products provide temporary benefits, they tend to weigh down the hair, accumulate over time, and become sticky in high humidity. Consumers also complain that hair treated with these types of products can appear unwashed and dull, both visually and to the touch. Furthermore, products based on film-forming polymers and films are typically used exclusively as leave-in products. When the hair is washed, any benefit provided by the product is lost.

[0004] Oils, waxes, and other fatty substances have also been used in products to provide shine and moisturizing properties to the hair. Such products attempt to replace the natural oils removed from the hair due to shampoos, chemical treatments, environmental factors, etc., with Additional materials. Although simply replacing the oils removed from the hair seems logical, consumers complain that the hair is greasy and can be difficult to style.

[0005] Consumers are looking for products that give hair shine and luster, making hair look natural and healthy, without causing buildup, stickiness, or heaviness. Hair should be light, flowing, and have a natural appearance. DISCLOSURE SUMMARY

[0006] This disclosure relates to hair treatment compositions and methods that impart desirable shine and luster to hair. Whether the hair treatment compositions are rinsed from the hair as a rinse-out product or left on the hair as a leave-in product, they give the hair a light, shimmering finish and noticeable shine. Shapes

[0292] Hair treatment compositions are typically oil-in-water emulsions. Alternatively, the compositions may be oil dispersions. The compositions typically have a translucent or opaque appearance and may be in the form of a cream, gel, lotion, rinse-off product, and the like. In various embodiments, the hair treatment compositions are not aerosols. In further embodiments, the hair treatment compositions are not foams. In further embodiments, the hair treatment compositions are preferably oil-in-water emulsions that are translucent or opaque with the consistency of a cream, gel, or lotion.

[0293] The compositions are unique because they are effective as both leave-in and rinse-out products. The compositions interact with the hair fibers with a type of "adherence" (attraction) such that the shine-enhancing properties resist rinsing. In this respect, the compositions can be used like a traditional conditioner composition applied after shampooing. Furthermore, the compositions can be used even after conditioning to provide additional shine and luster to the hair, whether the compositions are used as a leave-in or rinse-out product. Kits

[0294] The hair treatment compositions of this disclosure may be included in a kit. For example, a kit comprising one or more hair treatment compositions according to this disclosure and one or more additional hair treatment compositions, wherein the hair treatment composition(s) of this disclosure and the additional hair treatment composition(s) are contained separately. The type and purpose of the one or more additional hair treatment compositions are not limited. However, in various embodiments, the one or more additional hair treatment compositions are selected from shampoo compositions, conditioning compositions, styling compositions, finishing compositions, or a combination thereof.In further embodiments, a hair treatment composition of this disclosure is included in a kit with a shampoo composition, wherein the hair treatment composition of this disclosure and the shampoo composition are contained separately. [0295] Hair treatment compositions can be used in various methods to improve the visual appearance and feel of hair, for example, human hair, including human hair from an individual's head. For example, hair treatment compositions are useful for: (i) imparting shine and luster to hair; (ii) improving the texture and feel of hair; (iii) preventing or reducing frizz, particularly under conditions of high humidity; and (iv) improving the appearance of hair; whereby the methods typically include the application of a hair treatment composition disclosed herein to the hair.The hair treatment composition can be applied to the hair as a leave-in product (i.e., can remain on the hair without rinsing and the hair can be styled subsequently) or as a rinse-out product (i.e., rinsed from the hair before further styling).

[0296] When used as a rinse-out product, the hair treatment composition is typically applied to wet or dry hair, may remain on the hair for a period of time, and is subsequently rinsed out before styling. For example, the hair treatment composition may be left on the hair for approximately 10 seconds to approximately 15 minutes. Alternatively, the hair treatment composition may remain on the hair for approximately 10 seconds to approximately 10 minutes, approximately 10 seconds to approximately 5 minutes, approximately 10 seconds to approximately 3 minutes, approximately 30 seconds to approximately 15 minutes, approximately 30 seconds to approximately 10 minutes, or approximately 30 seconds to approximately 5 minutes. Put simply, when used as a rinse-out product, the hair treatment composition can be used like a traditional conditioner.However, unlike a traditional conditioner, hair treatment compositions are not necessarily used in conjunction with a shampooing step. In some cases, hair is initially cleansed with shampoo and subsequently treated with a hair treatment composition as described in this disclosure. In other cases, the hair treatment composition is used as a standalone product, such that it is not required for use in conjunction with shampooing. Furthermore, the hair treatment compositions described in this disclosure may be used even after hair has been treated with a conditioner, for example, to provide additional shine and luster.

[0297] When used as a leave-in product, the hair treatment composition can be applied to wet, damp, or dry hair. As the term suggests, a leave-in product remains on the hair for an extended period without being rinsed out. The hair treatment composition is applied to the hair, which is then styled and left to dry without rinsing it out. In various embodiments, after applying the hair treatment composition, the hair can be dried, for example, by blow-drying. In additional embodiments, the hair can be treated with a hot iron, for example, a flat iron or a curling iron.

[0298] An implementation of this disclosure is provided by means of the following examples. These examples are intended to illustrate the technology but are not limiting in nature. Example 1 (Compositions)

[0302] The compositions presented in Example 1 were tested to determine their ability to impart shine to hair. Strands of virgin Caucasian hair (3 grams, 25 inches) were washed with a standard shampoo, and excess water was removed after washing. The hair strands were treated separately with one of the compositions presented in Example 1. Each composition was applied to wet hair strands, massaged into the hair, and left on the hair for 3 minutes. After 3 minutes, the strands were rinsed with water and blow-dried. Two expert evaluators then independently assessed the shine of the hair strands based on the following scale:

[0303] +++ = Very high gloss

[0304] ++ = High gloss

[0305] + = Slight shine.

[0306] The results are shown in the table of Example 1 but reproduced below.

[0307] [Tables5] Compositions ABCDEFG Shine +++ +++ +++ +++ +++ + +

[0308] The results show that a combination of polyether-modified polysiloxanes, propylene glycol, and cationic surfactant in the compositions conferred a substantial increase in hair shine. This is illustrated by the results for Comparative Composition F, which did not contain a cationic surfactant. The data also show that propylene glycol, in combination with polyether-modified polysiloxanes and the cationic surfactant, contributes to the remarkable improvement in shine. This is illustrated by the results for Comparative Composition G. Comparative Composition G included glycerin instead of propylene glycol. This is surprising considering that glycerin and propylene glycol often provide similar properties in cosmetic compositions. The compounds have a very similar structure, differing by a single hydroxyl group. Example 3 (Composition and gloss evaluation)

[0310] Inventive Composition H and Comparative Composition I were tested to determine their ability to impart shine to hair. Strands of virgin Caucasian hair (3 grams, 25 inches) were washed with a standard shampoo, and excess water was removed after washing. The hair strands were treated separately with Inventive Composition H or Comparative Composition I. Each composition was applied to damp hair strands, massaged into the hair, and left on the hair for 3 minutes. After 3 minutes, the strands were rinsed with water and dried with a hairdryer.

[0311] After drying, the hair strands were assessed using a SAMBA Shine® Instrument (by Bossa Nova Vision), a device commonly used in the cosmetics industry to measure hair shine (also called hair luster or hair gloss). It provides a quantitative measurement to support claims and evaluate product efficacy. The results from the SAMBA Shine® Instrument showed significantly better shine for hair treated with Inventive Composition H compared to hair treated with Comparative Composition I. For hair treated with Inventive Composition H, the SAMBA Shine® Instrument showed almost a doubling in the shine range (a measurement representing the magnitude of the shine).Furthermore, the results showed that the shine of the hair treated with the Inventive Compositions was visibly brighter (more reflective) than the shine provided by the comparative Composition H. In other words, the shine provided by Inventive Composition H was significantly more pronounced and brighter (more reflective) than the shine provided by the comparative Composition I.

[0312] The expression "one or more" means "at least one" and therefore includes individual components as well as mixtures / combinations.

[0313] The term “plurality” means “more than one” or “two or more”.

[0314] Except in operational examples, or unless otherwise indicated, all numbers expressing quantities of ingredients and / or reaction conditions may in all cases be modified by the term "approximately", meaning to within + / - 5% the number indicated.

[0315] All percentages, parts and ratios herein are based on the total weight of the compositions, unless otherwise stated.

[0316] Some of the various identified component categories may overlap. In such cases where an overlap may exist and the composition includes both components (or the composition includes more than two overlapping components), an overlapping component does not represent more than one component. For example, Some compounds can be considered both a surfactant and a fatty compound. If a particular composition includes both a surfactant and a fatty compound, a single compound will serve only as either a surfactant or a fatty compound (the single compound does not serve as both a surfactant and a fatty component).

[0317] A "rinse-out" product refers to a composition that is rinsed and / or washed from the hair with water after or during its application to the hair, and before drying and / or styling the hair. At least some of the composition is removed from the hair during rinsing and / or washing.

[0318] A "leave-in" product refers to a composition that is not rinsed and / or washed from the hair after or during its application. The composition remains on the hair during drying and / or throughout styling.
