Description

Title of the invention: Deflector and thermal protection for a hybrid motor vehicle muffler

[0001] The invention relates to the flow of air and thermal protection along an exhaust line in the underbody of a motor vehicle. The invention relates more specifically to thermal insulation and a deflector facing a motor vehicle exhaust silencer. The invention also relates to a motor vehicle, preferably with a hybrid engine.

[0002] A motor vehicle equipped with an internal combustion engine has an exhaust line integrated into the underbody. For this purpose, the underbody has a tunnel through which the exhaust line runs, opening out at the rear facade. In operation, the exhaust line heats up to several hundred degrees, so the tunnel is widened to protect it and the various adjoining entities.

[0003] When the motor vehicle is of the hybrid type, that is to say it combines an internal combustion engine in addition to an electric motor capable of driving the motor vehicle, a set of electric batteries is arranged in the underbody; the same one which is used by the exhaust line. The set of electric batteries then forms an obstacle to be bypassed by the exhaust line, taking into account thermal constraints and pressure losses in the pipes of the exhaust line.

[0004] The noise emissions generated by the thermal engine, also called an internal combustion engine, are controlled by a silencer. This component forms a large body placed in the tunnel layout, the geometry of which is adapted accordingly. This adaptation takes into account the presence of the electric battery pack, but also the suspension systems whose fixing points require clearance for the introduction of tightening tools.

[0005] These different imperatives generate an irregular surface favoring the appearance of random vortices when the vehicle is moving. These phenomena increase the drag of the motor vehicle, and therefore its consumption of primary energy to move the motor vehicle.

[0006] Document FR3025462B1 presents a motor vehicle with a short exhaust line and a thermal protection screen for the fuel tank of this vehicle. The exhaust duct of the exhaust line has its combustion gas outlet cannula located in front of the fuel tank, and a thermal protection screen is fixed under the fuel tank and is shaped to deflect the gases towards the ground. combustion heat coming out of the cannula.

[0007] Document FR3023821B1 presents a motor vehicle underfloor arrangement comprising an exhaust silencer extending transversely under a floor, and a screen comprising a first part providing a thermal insulation function, said first part being positioned at least partially between said exhaust silencer and the floor, as well as a second part providing an aerodynamic deflector function located in the extension of said first part, said second part extending between said exhaust silencer and a rear bumper of the vehicle. The first part and the second part are made of two different materials. Thus, the first part is made of embossed aluminum. The second part is made of a plastic or composite material.

[0008] There is a constant need to reduce the cost of the motor vehicle, and in particular the cost of a thermal protection screen. This saving must nevertheless respect the requirements of air flow guidance, thermal protection and mechanical resistance.

[0009] The invention aims to address at least one of the problems or drawbacks encountered in the prior art. In particular, the invention aims to reduce the cost of a motor vehicle underbody, in particular a thermal protection screen. The invention also aims to optimize the cost, mass, perceived quality, protection against projections, and aerodynamics of a motor vehicle underbody.

[0048] In this description, the technical characteristics are defined in the assembly configuration of the motor vehicle, unless explicitly mentioned otherwise.

[0049] Throughout the description, the different figures use the same reference signs to designate identical or similar entities.

[0050] [Fig.l] represents a motor vehicle 10, according to one embodiment of the invention.

[0051] The motor vehicle 10 comprises a structure 12. The structure 12 forms an outer body, or even a main frame of the motor vehicle. The structure 12 delimits different compartments of the motor vehicle 10, including the passenger compartment, the cargo compartment, the engine compartment (not shown). The structure 12 may be formed from an assembly of stamped sheets welded to each other.

[0052] The structure 12 connects different parts of the motor vehicle 10 including the openings. The structure 12 forms a mounting support for the powertrain, the suspension systems, the steering system, the braking systems.

[0053] The motor vehicle 10 comprises a base 14. The base 14 forms the lower part of the motor vehicle 10. It connects the front axles and rear, and extends beyond. It is formed by a part of the structure 12, by panels ensuring the function of deflector.

[0054] The motor vehicle 10 comprises at least one engine, preferably several engines; including a heat engine 16 and an electric drive motor 18. Each of these engines is capable of moving the motor vehicle 10 so that it travels. The heat engine is also called an internal combustion engine. It is supplied with fuel. Its exhaust gases are collected and conducted via an exhaust line 20. The exhaust line 20 extends to the rear of the vehicle, for example to its rear bumper.

[0055] The electric drive motor 18 is directly associated with an axle, for example the rear axle. According to one option, the motor vehicle further comprises another electric drive motor (not shown) associated with the front axle. The motor vehicle 10 also comprises energy storage means, including an electric battery 22. The electric battery 22 is capable of powering each electric drive motor. The electric battery 22 is arranged in the base 14, vertically at the level of the exhaust line 20.

[0056] The motor vehicle may, for example, be a private motor vehicle or a utility motor vehicle.

[0057] [Fig. 2] shows a portion of the underbody 14 of a motor vehicle. The motor vehicle may correspond to that shown in relation to [Fig. 1]. The electric battery 22 is covered by a lower panel providing a deflector function.

[0058] The exhaust line 20 comprises at least one treatment device 24. The treatment device 24 preferably comprises a silencer 26. The treatment device 24 is capable of providing acoustic treatment to the exhaust gases. The silencer 26 makes it possible to reduce the noise level emitted at the outlet of the exhaust line 20, and to comply with a regulatory criterion.

[0059] Preferably, the at least one treatment device 24 comprises a catalytic converter 28. The catalytic converter 28 is a chemical treatment device. It tends to reduce the harmfulness of the exhaust gases. It can be two-way or three-way. The exhaust line 20 comprises at least one pipe 30 connecting each treatment device 24 to the engine. The pipe 30 essentially comprises a metal tube. Each treatment device 24 forms an increase in width relative to the pipes 30.

[0060] The underbody 14 comprises a tunnel 32. The tunnel 32 extends essentially from the engine (not shown) to the rear of the motor vehicle. It forms a vertical recess on the lower surface of the underbody 14. It forms an inverted channel. The exhaust line 20 extends in the tunnel 32. The tunnel 32 has at least one widening 38, such as a bowl, for at least one or each treatment device 24. Each widening 38 forms a variation in width in the tunnel 32. The tunnel 32 has thermal protections, in particular at least one thermal protection screen 34. The thermal protection screen is opposite the treatment device 24, preferably the silencer 26. It is also called a thermal shield. It can be embossed in order to improve its insulating character.

[0061] Due to the presence of the electric battery 22, the exhaust line 20 is of the deflected type. It is deflected in the sense that it is in a lateral position rather than a central position. It runs along a lateral side member of the base 14. It also runs along a mounting area of a suspension system suspension arm 36, for example a fixing of a pivot connection (not shown) of the suspension system 36. The suspension system 36 also comprises a spring and a shock absorber; it accompanies the movements of the axle by dissipating the energy of the oscillations of the wheel. The proximity between the exhaust line 20 and the corner of the base 14 where the suspension system 36 is anchored imposes a steep geometry, the surface of which is covered with a deflector 40.

[0062] The deflector 40 faces the treatment device 24, and fits the thermal protection screen 34. It is below. The deflector 40 is generally horizontal. It forms a plate capable of guiding an air flow under the motor vehicle when it is moving. It has a generally smooth lower surface which limits the creation of vortices. The deflector 40 has a rear edge which fits the wheel arch. The deflector 40 delimits the widening 38. It faces the silencer 26. The treatment device 24 extends longitudinally at the level of the deflector 40.

[0063] The electric battery 22 extends longitudinally at the level of the treatment device 24. The deflector 40 is longitudinally; and preferably vertically; at the level of the electric battery 22. The tunnel 32 separates them. This arrangement provides a compromise in terms of compactness and guidance of the underbody air flow.

[0064] According to one option of the invention, the silencer is a front silencer, the motor vehicle further comprises a rear silencer.

[0065] [Fig. 3] shows a base 14 of a motor vehicle, according to a first embodiment of the invention. The motor vehicle may correspond to that presented in relation to one of Figures 1 to 2.

[0066] The base 14 has a tunnel 32; an exhaust line with a pipe and an exhaust gas treatment device 24 which communicates with the pipe(s). The treatment device 24 comprises an upper part 42 and a lower part 44, both in the tunnel 32. The upper part 42 and the part lower part 44 are separated by a horizontal plane. The upper part 42 may be an upper half, the lower part 44 may be a lower half. The lower part 44 faces the ground. It may protrude from the tunnel 32.

[0067] The base 14 also comprises a thermal protection screen 34. The thermal protection screen 34 is vertically between the floor 46 of the structure 12 and the treatment device 24. It partitions the base 14. It prevents heating of the surrounding pipes 48, such as the cooling pipes of the electric battery (not shown). The tunnel 32 is an under-floor tunnel.

[0068] The thermal protection screen 34 comprises a first vertical wall 50. The first vertical wall 50 delimits one side of the tunnel 32. It faces the upper part 42 of the treatment device 24 in order to limit heating of the structure by convection.

[0069] According to an alternative of the invention, the thermal protection screen comprises a wall forming a half-tube, a vertical part of which forms the first vertical wall.

[0070] The base 14 comprises a deflector 40. The deflector 40 is configured to guide an air flow between the base 14 and the ground when the motor vehicle is traveling. This limits the generation of vortices, and reduces primary energy consumption. The deflector 40 comprises a horizontal wall 54. The horizontal wall 54 is along the tunnel 32.

[0071] The deflector 40 also comprises a second vertical wall 58, inclined relative to the horizontal wall 54. The second vertical wall 58 is below the first vertical wall 50. It extends vertically between the first vertical wall 52 and the horizontal wall 54, and extends even lower. Thus, it is horizontally opposite the lower part 44. Thus, the demarcation of the tunnel 32 is carried out using several parts. The second vertical wall 58 delimits the tunnel 32 and faces the lower part 44 of the treatment device 24. Thus, it delimits the tunnel.

[0072] The thermal stresses are higher around the upper part 42, so that the thermal stresses applying to the thermal protection screen 34 are higher than for the deflector 40 which moreover benefits from cooling via the air flow generated by the circulation of the motor vehicle. The physical controls and geometric tolerances are more drastic for the thermal protection screen 34 regardless of the material. When the thermal protection screen 34 and the deflector 40 comprise the same material, the thermal protection screen 34 will be thicker.

[0073] Since the invention provides for producing the thermal protection screen and the deflector in two pieces, it is possible to reduce the height of the first vertical wall 50 and to compensate with the second vertical wall 58 which is less expensive. The invention reduces the cost of the assembly including the first vertical wall 50 and the second wall vertical 58. Therefore, the invention improves the cost of the thermal protection screen, and of the base as a whole.

[0074] The first vertical wall 50 is at a first distance 60 from the treatment device 24, and the second vertical wall 58 is at a second distance 62 from the treatment device 24. In this case they are measured transversely. The second distance 62 is greater than the first distance 60, preferably at least twice greater, more preferably at least three times greater. The difference in distances implies an increased spacing of the second vertical wall 58, which limits its thermal constraints and the requirements applying to the deflector 40.

[0075] The first distance 60 and the second distance 62 are measured horizontally. The second distance 62 and the first distance 60 are average distances, or maximum distances. For illustration, the first distance 60 is between 15 mm and 30 mm. The second distance is at least 80 mm.

[0076] The tunnel 32 has a horizontal plane 66 at mid-height. The second vertical wall 58 is below the horizontal plane 66 of the tunnel 32. This reduces the thermal stresses it undergoes.

[0077] The deflector 40 comprises a first material and the thermal protection screen 34 comprises a second material different from the first material. Preferably, the first material comprises plastic and the second material comprises aluminum. These materials make it possible to optimize mass and cost.

[0078] The motor vehicle comprises a fixing lug 70. It connects the second vertical wall 58 to the structure 12, for example to the floor 46. The second vertical wall 58 extends from, and is fixed to, the fixing lug 70. The fixing lug 70 is formed by the structure 12. It is metallic. It is welded to the sheet metal forming the floor 46. The fixing lug 70 extends vertically at the level of the first vertical wall 50. It is separate and distant from the latter, which thermally insulates it.

[0079] The deflector 40 comprises a fixing zone 72 extending horizontally from the second vertical wall 58 towards the treatment device 24. The fixing zone 72 forms a fixing wing, it extends laterally inwards, towards the first vertical wall 50. Preferably, the fixing zone 72 is vertically at the level of the first vertical wall 50. The fixing zone 72 is horizontally opposite the horizontal wall 54 relative to the second vertical wall 58.

[0080] The deflector 40 comprises a third vertical wall 64 extending vertically from the horizontal wall 54. The second vertical wall 58 is between the first vertical wall 50 and the third vertical wall 64.

[0081] The horizontal wall 54 of the deflector 40 is a wall called the second horizontal wall 56. The thermal protection screen 34 also comprises a horizontal wall, called the first horizontal wall 52. It forms the ceiling of the tunnel 32, and faces the treatment device 24. The first vertical wall 50 extends from the first horizontal wall 52 downwards. The first vertical wall 50 and the second vertical wall 58 extend vertically towards each other. They are vertically between the second horizontal wall 56 and the first horizontal wall 52.

[0082] The deflector 40 comprises a third horizontal wall 68 below the horizontal wall 54. The third horizontal wall 68 is a lower wall. It connects the second vertical wall 58 to the third vertical wall 64. Thus, these walls form a boss masking the processing device 24. This improves the perceived quality. In addition, this helps to channel an air flow below the base 14.

[0083] The base 14 comprises a horizontal separation 74 between the first vertical wall 50 and the second vertical wall 58. This aspect avoids thermal conduction, and therefore the stresses that the deflector 40 undergoes. This makes it possible to lower the threshold of requirements with regard to this part, and therefore its cost. The second vertical wall 58 is at a distance from the first vertical wall 50. Horizontally, for example transversely, the second vertical wall 50 is opposite the treatment device 24 with respect to the first vertical wall 50. The horizontal separation 74 promotes ventilation.

[0084] Preferably, the treatment device 24 is a silencer.

[0085] According to an alternative of the invention, the deflector comprises the same material as the thermal protection screen, however its geometric tolerances are less strict. The deflector and its material are then configured to resist gravel projections. They are also adapted to resist aerodynamic forces. The thickness can be significantly increased. Its strength requirements are lower. The quality and geometric controls are less complex. The manufacturing processes are less precise. Thus, increasing the size of the deflector by reducing that of the thermal protection screen reduces the overall costs.

[0086] [Fig. 4] shows a motor vehicle base 14, according to a second embodiment of the invention. The motor vehicle may correspond to that shown in relation to one of Figures 1 to 2. The thermal protection screen 34 may correspond to that shown in relation to one of Figures 1 to 3.

[0087] The base 14 according to the second embodiment is substantially identical to the first embodiment. It differs, however, in that the deflector 40 has a different geometry, and the fixing lug 70 has a different configuration.

[0088] The base 14 has: a tunnel 32; an exhaust line with a pipe and an exhaust gas treatment device 24. The treatment device 24 comprises an upper portion 42 and a lower portion 44 extending into the tunnel 32. The base 14 further comprises a thermal protection screen 34 with a first vertical wall 50 delimiting one side of the tunnel 32. The first vertical wall 50 faces the upper portion 42 of the treatment device 24 in order to block the propagation of heat.

[0089] The base 14 also comprises a deflector 40 with a horizontal wall 54 and a second vertical wall 58 along the tunnel 32. The horizontal wall 54 is configured to guide, to accompany, a flow of air between the ground and the base 14. The second vertical wall 58 extends vertically under the first vertical wall 50 and under the horizontal wall 54, in order to be laterally and / or longitudinally opposite the lower part 44. By this means, it contains the heat of the treatment device 24. The second vertical wall 58 is opposite the tunnel 32 and delimits it.

[0090] The vertical delimitation of the tunnel is achieved in a mixed manner: by the deflector 40 and the thermal protection screen 34. Per unit of surface area, the deflector 40 is less expensive to produce than the thermal protection screen 34. Thus, the invention provides savings since it achieves part of the delimitation of the tunnel 32 at a lower cost.

[0091] The first vertical wall 50 extends vertically at the level of the upper portion 42 of the treatment device 24 and is vertically spaced from the lower portion 44. The second vertical wall 58 extends at the level of the lower portion 44 and is vertically spaced from the upper portion 42.

[0092] The fixing lug 70 is fixed to the structure 12 of the motor vehicle, for example by screwing. Similarly, the second vertical wall 58 is fixed using a fixing pin to the fixing lug 70. The fixing lug 70 is made of plastic.

[0093] The deflector 40 comprises a fixing zone 72 extending horizontally from the second vertical wall 58. The fixing zone 72 has a step shape. The step is vertically at the level of the first vertical wall 50, preferably at the level of its lower edge 76. The step makes it possible to vertically offset the fixing zone 72 relative to the second vertical wall 58. This contributes to protecting it thermally, and preferably to being protected by the first vertical wall 50. The first vertical wall 50 vertically overlaps the second vertical wall 58, in particular the fixing zone 72.

[0094] The deflector 40 comprises a third vertical wall 64 and a third horizontal wall 68 under the horizontal wall 54. The third horizontal wall 68 connects the second vertical wall 58 to the third horizontal wall 68 by forming a box 78. The box shape allows for a reinforced lower protrusion. It runs along the treatment device 24. It improves the ground effect.

[0095] According to an embodiment of the invention not shown, the fixing lug is formed by the deflector. It is integral with the second vertical wall. The fixing lug extends the second vertical wall vertically upwards, in particular towards the floor where it is fixed.

[0096] According to an embodiment of the invention not shown, the deflector comprises a single vertical wall, such as a vertical wing, in this case the second vertical wall. Its internal face blocks the heat from the treatment device, and its external face masks the treatment device. The invention optimizes perceived quality and costs.

[0097] According to a preferred embodiment, the deflector is made of a plastic or composite material. The plastic material may comprise a thermoplastic material or a thermosetting material. According to a preferred embodiment, the plastic material is selected from the group comprising polypropylene, polyamide, polyphthalamide, polyetheretherketone, polyphenylene sulfide, polyamide-imide, polyetherimide, polyarylamide, polyepoxide, unsaturated polyester, vinylester or polyester-vinylester resins. For example, the composite material comprises a matrix of a plastic material as described above with a reinforcement. For example, the reinforcement comprises glass or carbon fibers.

[0098] The deflector comprises at least 10% by weight of recycled plastic material based on the total weight of the plastic material; preferably from 10 to 80% by weight; more preferably from 20 to 60% by weight or from 30 to 40% by weight. The use of recycled plastic material reduces the ecological footprint of the vehicle.

[0099] The invention comprises the combination of all the embodiments illustrated by all the figures.

[0100] [Fig.2] is an isometric view. It respects a specific scale, real angles and real proportions.
