[0030] In some embodiments, one or more of the applicators can be applied to the backing layer of the tape to modify the surface adhesive properties of the tape. For example, the applicator can create a structured surface (e.g., a non-flat surface) on the backing layer to which an adhesive material can be selectively applied. For example, the backing layer can have depressions that affect areas where adhesive can be present. The applicator can modify the backing layer to have a patterned varying stiffness. The applicator can modify the backing layer so that the adhesive selectively adheres to certain areas of the adhesive surface. The applicator can cause a chemical transition through the backing and adhesive to modify the adhesive properties of the tape. The applicator can apply thermal radiation to the backing layer to thermally induce a change in the properties of the backing material.

[0031] In some embodiments, one or more of the applicators may include a variety of cutters that cut a pattern of through holes into the tape. Suitable cutters may include, for example, lasers, blades, dies, etc. The pattern of through holes may reduce the effective adhesive area of the tape to a level desired by the user.

[0032] In some embodiments, a pattern cutter configured to cut customized shapes out of the tape is provided downstream of the attachment modification mechanism. Various cutters, e.g., lasers, blades, dies, etc., can be used to cut out the overall tape shape to allow, for example, for mobile joints, 3D shapes, and better attachment to healthy skin around wound areas.

Inkjet printing 820b on the adhesive backing produces specific customized markings to aid in centering / positioning of the customized adhesive article, thus eliminating uncertainty during application. A pattern cutter 830 then trims the modified adhesive tape to the desired size / shape. Take-up roll 840 removes the unused stock roll material as a continuous roll of waste material generated by the process.

[0058] Example 4 In Example 4 shown in FIG. 9, a continuous customizable adhesive tape is shown produced by a lamination process using two adhesive rolls and a printer. A supply roll 910, commercially available under the trade name Micropore from 3M Company, St. Paul, MN, is shown threaded through the machine. An emblem adhesive 920, commercially available under the trade name Press-In-Place from 3M Company, St. Paul, MN, with spaced adhesive areas / dots interspersed between two liners, is introduced to the adhesive side of the Micropore. This lamination process is discontinuous in that only these adhesive dots transfer to the adhesive side of the Micropore when the roller is actuated to act against the pressure roll 930. The roller acting against the pressure roll 930 essentially introduces adhesive dots that are bonded to the adhesive side of the Micropore. A printer 940 is shown acting on the backing of the Micropore tape. A cut-off mechanism (not shown) then trims the customized Micropore tape to the desired size / shape. This figure shows changes / alterations along the length dimension of the Micropore tape, but by extension, similar modifications can be made across the width of the Micropore tape as well as replicated Press-In-Place Emblem Adhesive transfer mechanisms.
