Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present invention relates to a tensioning mechanism for a door operator system. The present invention relates to a door operator system comprising such a tensioning mechanism. [Background technology]

[0002] A door operator system for a door typically comprises a door coupled to a door frame and a drive unit configured to move the door along the door frame between an open position and a closed position to open and close an opening. The door, which may be a sectional door, is typically used as a garage door or an industrial door. The drive unit may further comprise a motor to move the door.

[0003] In a conventional overhead sectional door, an electric motor mounted above the door uses a wire attached to the door to lift the door. Such overhead sectional doors often implement a balance spring to reduce the force required to open the door, but this balance spring increases the complexity and is cumbersome to install. In case such a conventional overhead sectional door is damaged, such as a broken wire, a mechanical device is used to stop the door from falling.

[0004] To achieve a more efficient door operator system that reduces the complexity and risks of the door operator system during operation, maintenance, and installation, door operator systems have been developed in which a drive unit is mounted relative to the door.

[0005] To achieve high accuracy and proper alignment in relation to the operation of the door, a long transmission member, such as a chain, may be implemented along the side of the door opening. In such a system, a driven sprocket on the door may interface with a long transmission member that extends next to the door. Such a long transmission member that extends next to the door needs to have a certain tension to achieve proper operation of the door operator system.

[0006] Therefore, a need exists for a tensioning mechanism for a door operator system that facilitates providing tension to such elongate transmission members in an easy and efficient manner for proper operation of the door operator system. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

[0007] One object of the present invention is to provide a tensioning mechanism for a door operator system having an elongate transmission member for moving a door of the door operator system, which facilitates providing tension to the elongate transmission member in an easy and efficient manner for proper operation of the door operator system.

[0008] It is another object of the present invention to provide a door operator system that includes such a tensioning mechanism. [Means for solving the problem]

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0030] Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings. However, the present invention can be embodied in many different forms, and therefore should not be construed as being limited to the embodiments and aspects described herein. Rather, these embodiments and aspects are presented so that this disclosure will be thorough and complete, and will fully convey the scope of the present invention to those skilled in the art. The terms used in the detailed description of specific embodiments / aspects shown in the accompanying drawings are not intended to limit the present invention. In the drawings, like numbers refer to like elements.

[0031] FIG. 1 shows a schematic perspective view and FIG. 2 shows a front view of a door operator system S to which the inventive aspects of the present invention may be applied. The door operator system comprises a door frame 10, a drive mechanism D, and a door 20. The door operator system S is configured to be installed in an opening O defined by a wall and a floor / ground. The door 20 is coupled to the door frame 10. The door operator system S is configured to open and close the opening O by moving the door 20 between an open position P1 and a closed position P2. The door 20 is in a closed position P2 in FIG. 1 and in an open position P1 in FIG. 2. The open position may be a horizontal open position, in the form of a planar horizontal position or an inclined horizontal position, as shown diagrammatically by the door operator system in FIG. 1, such as a vertical open position shown in FIG. 2. The closed position P2 may be a vertical closed position P2.

[0032] In an embodiment, such as that shown in FIG. 1, the door 20 is a sectional door 20 made up of a plurality of horizontal, interconnected sections 20a-20e connected to a door frame 10. In one embodiment, the door is a garage door. In another embodiment, the door is an industrial door. The door 20 is configured to be moved along the door frame 10 between a closed position P2 and an open position P1.

[0033] The door operator system S may include a first terminal and a second terminal, not shown, at least one of which is configured to transmit energy for powering the motor of the drive unit and for charging an energy storage device, such as a battery. In an alternative embodiment, power may be supplied to the motor of the drive unit by electrical wiring.

[0034] The door operator system shown diagrammatically in Figure 1 is an up-and-over door operator system, in which the door is disposed substantially vertically in the closed position P2 and approximately horizontally and within the opening in the open position P1.

[0035] In an alternative embodiment, the door operator system may be one in which the door is disposed substantially vertically in the closed position P2 and in an angled position between a substantially vertical position and a substantially horizontal position in the open position P1. For example, the door may be disposed at a 45° angle from the horizontal position P1 in the open position P1, although one skilled in the art will appreciate that the door may be disposed at any angle between the horizontal and vertical orientations of the door in the open position P1.

[0036] The door frame 10 comprises a first frame section 12 located on a first side I of the opening O and a second frame section 14 located on a second side II of the opening O. The door frame 10 is connected to a wall and to a floor, i.e. to the floor of the opening O. In one embodiment, the first frame section 12 comprises a substantially vertically extending portion 12-1 and a substantially horizontally extending portion 12-2. The second frame section 14 comprises a substantially vertically extending portion 14-1 and a substantially horizontally extending portion 14-2. The vertically extending portions 12-1, 14-1 and the horizontally extending portions 12-2, 14-2 are connected to form a path for the door 20 to slide and a track for the drive unit 30 to cooperate with.

[0037] Thus, the first frame section 12 and the second frame section 14 each include vertically extending portions 12-1, 14-1, horizontally extending portions 12-2, 14-2, and bent interconnecting portions 12-3, 14-3. In other words, the first frame section 12 includes a vertically extending portion 12-1, a horizontally extending portion 12-2, and a bent interconnecting portion 12-3. Thus, the bent interconnecting portion 12-3 connects the vertically extending portion 12-1 and the horizontally extending portion 12-2. Similarly, the second frame section 14 includes a vertically extending portion 14-1, a horizontally extending portion 14-2, and a bent interconnecting portion 14-3. Thus, the bent interconnecting portion 14-3 connects the vertically extending portion 14-1 and the horizontally extending portion 14-2.

[0038] The vertically extending portions 12-1, 14-1 may be vertical portions 12-1, 14-1 or inclined vertical portions 12-1, 14-1. Similarly, the horizontally extending portions 12-2, 14-2 may be horizontal portions 12-2, 14-2 or inclined horizontal portions 12-2, 14-2.

[0039] The door 20 is movably connected to the first frame section 12 at a first side and to the second frame section 14 at a second side. In one embodiment, one or more of the plurality of sections 20a-20e is connected to the first frame section 12 at the first side I and to the second frame section 14 at the second side II.

[0040] The door operator system S comprises the drive mechanism D for operating the door operator system. The drive mechanism D comprises a drive unit 30 attached to the door 20. The drive unit 30 comprises at least one motor 32. The at least one motor 32 is configured to move the door 20 between a closed position P2 and an open position P1.

[0041] To enable driving of the door 20, the door operator system S further comprises an elongate transmission member 40 extending along the first side I of the opening O. The elongate transmission member 40 may further extend along the first frame section 12. The drive unit 30 further comprises a driven transmission member 34 in driving communication with the motor 32.

[0042] The driven transmission member 34 is movably connected to the elongated transmission member 40 and configured to interact with the elongated transmission member 40 to drive the driven transmission member 34 along the elongated transmission member 40 by at least partially wrapping the driven transmission member 34 around the elongated transmission member 40. Thus, the elongated transmission member 40 is disposed to at least partially surround the driven transmission member 34.

[0043] The elongate transmission member 40 provides a more cost-effective solution, both in terms of manufacturing and installation, when compared to a fixed rack. Additionally, the elongate transmission member allows for relative movement between the door 20 and the frame, and does not require high precision and proper alignment in the same manner as a fixed rack solution. Thus, the elongate transmission member may be configured to allow a certain degree of movement along a direction perpendicular to the first frame section 12.

[0044] Additionally, the elongated transmission member 40 provides a safer door operator system because the elongated transmission member 40 will at least to some extent follow and remain engaged with the driven transmission member even if the door is pushed away from the rail. Additionally, the elongated transmission member is quieter and more wear-resistant than a fixed rack, and is less likely to malfunction due to pinching of external objects.

[0045] The elongate transmission member 40 may be in the form of a bendable transmission member. The elongate transmission member 40 may be in the form of a suspended transmission member. It is noted that in this context, bendable does not necessarily mean that the transmission member is necessarily flexible, but merely means that the transmission member can be wrapped around the driven transmission member. The transmission member 40 may therefore be considered as being configured to be in engagement with the driven transmission member 34 and allowing relative movement between the driven transmission member 34 and the direction of movement of the door 20 defined by the frame 10. In other words, the transmission member may be considered as a non-fixed transmission member or a suspended transmission member. The elongate transmission member may therefore be configured to engage the driven transmission member independently of the frame.

[0046] The drive unit 30 is movably connected to the elongate transmission member 40. The drive unit 30 is thus connected to said elongate transmission member 40 to allow relative movement between the door and the frame, whereby the drive unit 30 is fixed to the door 20. The drive unit 30 comprises at least one motor 32. The drive unit 30 is configured to move the door 20 from a closed position to an open position. To provide power to the motor 32, the at least one motor 32 may be connected to at least one energy storage device, such as a battery, arranged to power the at least one motor 32.

[0047] In one embodiment, the drive unit 30 is configured to move the door from the open position P1 to the closed position P2. In one embodiment, the door 20 is configured to move from the open position P1 to the closed position P2 due to the weight of the door 20. In one embodiment, the drive unit 30 is configured to brake the door 20 when moving from the open position P1 to the closed position P2.

[0048] The door operator system S includes a tensioning mechanism 100 for facilitating tensioning of the elongate transmission member. In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2, the tensioning mechanism is arranged in a coupled state to the elongate transmission member 40 in a lower position. According to one aspect of the present disclosure, the elongate transmission member 40 is arranged to be coupled to the tensioning mechanism 100 in an upper position and in the lower position. The tensioning mechanism is described in more detail below, for example with reference to Figures 4, 5, 6a-6b, and 7.

[0049] Locating the tensioning mechanism 100 in the lower location facilitates easier access for operators to perform service work including applying tension to elongate transmission members.

[0050] FIG. 3 illustrates generally a perspective view of a portion of a door operator system having a drive unit 30 and a tensioning mechanism for the door operator system, according to one embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0051] As shown in FIG. 3, in one embodiment, the door operator system further includes at least one guide member G1. The at least one guide member G1 is attached to the door 20. The guide member G1 may be configured to interact with the long transmission member 40 to guide the door 20 along the long transmission member 40 by the long transmission member 40 being at least partially wrapped around the at least one guide member G1. Thus, the guide member G1 moves the long transmission member 40 and guides the driven transmission member 34 relative to the long transmission member 40 to properly align the long transmission member 40 and the driven transmission member 34. Preferably, the guide member G1 may be a rotatable guide member that may be attached to the door 20 by a journal connection. Thus, the long transmission member 40 may be arranged to at least partially surround the guide member G1.

[0052] 3, the elongate transmission member 40 may be configured to wrap around and interact with a portion of the driven transmission member 34 and a portion of the guide member G1. The portion of the driven transmission member 34 that interacts with the elongate transmission member 40 is located opposite the portion of the guide member G1 that interacts with the elongate transmission member 40. This provides a larger engagement surface between the driven transmission member, the guide member, and the elongate transmission member, which may provide a more stable door operator system requiring lower torque for operation.

[0053] As shown, for example, in FIG. 3, the elongate transmission member 40 is coupled to the tensioning mechanism 100 and disposed along a first side I of the opening O.

[0054] The elongated transmission member 40 may be any conventional elongated transmission member 40 that provides the necessary slack to compensate for horizontal or tilting movement of the drive unit and / or the door. The elongated transmission member may be a belt or a chain.

[0055] In one embodiment, the elongate transmission member 40 may be a belt. Thus, the guide member G1 and the driven transmission member 34 may be pulley elements configured to interface with said belt. In one embodiment, the belt may be a cog belt or a ribbed belt, and the guide member G1 and the driven transmission member 34 may be cog wheels that interface with the ribs of said cog belt or said ribbed belt.

[0056] The long transmission member 40 may also be a chain, as shown for example in FIG. 3. The chain may comprise slots for receiving cogs. The driven transmission member 34 may thus be a cog wheel configured to interact with the chain, for example a slot in the chain. The driven transmission member 34 may be a sprocket. Furthermore, the guide member G1 may be a cog wheel configured to interact with the chain, for example a slot in the chain. The guide member G1 may be a sprocket. In one embodiment, the guide member G1 may be a rib wheel for interacting with the chain. In one embodiment, the chain is a non-endless chain, for example a single chain only partially surrounding the guide member and the driven transmission member.

[0057] In one embodiment, the door operator system further comprises a first guide roller set G2 and a second guide roller set G2. The first guide roller set and the second guide roller set are attached to the door 20. The first guide roller set G2 is configured to interact with the first frame section 12 and the second guide roller set G2 is configured to interact with the second frame section 14. Thus, the guide rollers move with the door 20 in a guided manner along a track formed by a frame, e.g., the first frame section 12 and the second frame section 14.

[0058] In one embodiment, the drive unit 30 is mounted to the bottom section 20 e of the door 20 .

[0059] According to one embodiment, the guide roller G2 is attached to the door 20 by a shaft G2s.

[0060] According to one aspect of the disclosure, as shown generally in FIGS. 1 and 2, the door operator system includes a pair of elongate transmission members 40 to enable a more stable movement pattern of the door 20. A first elongate transmission member 40 extends along a first side I of the opening O. The first elongate transmission member 40 may further extend along the first frame section 12. A second elongate transmission member 40 extends along a second side II of the opening O. The second elongate transmission member 40 may further extend along the second frame section 14. Guide and drive mechanisms described with reference to the first side of the door 20 may be correspondingly mirrored for the second side of the door 20.
