Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present disclosure generally relates to skin care emulsion compositions containing clean polymers, and in particular, the skin care emulsion is a stable viscous composition containing clean polymers such as acrylates and taurate copolymers.

Background Art

[0002] Some consumers desire skin care products that are effective, have a silk-like texture, are quickly absorbed by the skin, and contain clean ingredients.

[0003] Polymers are frequently used in skin care products to increase the viscosity of the product and can also act as moisturizers. Many skin care products contain multiple polymers that may include polyacrylamide, petroleum-derived components (e.g., isoparaffin, petrolatum), and / or ethoxylated components. However, some consumers prefer products formulated without these components and may desire products that meet the requirements for being marketed as "Clean at Sephora" (see Best Clean Beauty Products 2022. Sephora. Retrieved June 14, 2022. From www.sephora.com / beauty / clean-beauty-products, "Clean at Sephora" is a designation by beauty retailers for over 2,000 products as "clean", which in this case means not containing components such as sulfates, parabens, formaldehyde, phthalates, and mineral oil).

[0004] However, it is difficult to change the thickening system in skin care products. Skin care products such as moisturizers are difficult to formulate, and new polymer thickening systems may not be compatible with other ingredients, destabilize emulsions, change viscosity (e.g., become too watery or too viscous to spread easily over the user's entire skin), reduce effectiveness, and / or change texture (e.g., the product becomes too sticky and / or too rough).

Brief Description of the Drawings

[0009] Although this specification concludes with claims that particularly point out and distinctly claim the subject matter of the invention, it is believed that the invention will be better understood from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.

Modes for Carrying Out the Invention

[0010] Skin care compositions may contain synthetic polymers. Polymers can enhance the texture and viscosity of the composition. However, these polymers may contain polyacrylamide, petroleum-derived components, and / or ethoxylated components. Some consumers may prefer products that are formulated without these components and are also clean.

[0011] When acrylate and taurate copolymers are used as polymer thickeners in skin care compositions, consumers have found that this product provides improved moisturization without a trade-off with a poor feel on the skin compared to current products containing sodium acrylate copolymers or polyacrylamide polymer thickeners. (For the detailed results of a consumer test in which consumers evaluated a novel product containing an acrylate and taurate copolymer and two commercial products containing conventional polymer thickeners, see Table 1 below and the accompanying text).

[0012] Examples of acrylate and taurate copolymers that can be used in clean skin care compositions preferred by consumers include sodium acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyltaurate copolymers and C15-19 alkanes and polyglyceryl-6 laurate and polyglyceryl-6 (commercially available from Seppic as SEPILIFE™ NUDE), and / or sodium acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyltaurate copolymers and C15-19 alkanes and lauryl glucoside (commercially available from SNF™ as Natursol™ EMI132), as shown in Figure 1.

[0013] In skin care compositions, the polymer is generally supplied in oil and then inverted to become part of the continuous phase in an oil-in-water emulsion. It can be difficult to form a stable emulsion, especially when the skin care product is a moisturizer with a relatively high level of oil. Emulsifiers can facilitate the formation of the emulsion and also assist in maintaining the stability of the product.

[0014] However, it can be difficult to efficiently build the viscosity of the composition and select one or more emulsifiers that form a stable emulsion in a product containing acrylate and taurate copolymers.

[0015] Also, since emulsifiers are generally used at the lowest levels that provide the desired product viscosity and stability to give the best product performance, it can be advantageous for one or more emulsifiers to be efficient. If an emulsifier is only effective when used at relatively high levels, the product may be difficult to spread and may instead remain as a white layer on the skin rather than being absorbed by the skin. In these cases, the product may feel heavy and / or sticky. Further, it may be advantageous if there is a synergistic effect between the polymer and the emulsifier, which would allow the emulsifier to be incorporated at even lower levels and result in a smooth, lightweight moisturizer with sufficient viscosity.

[0016] The skin care composition can include a range of skin softeners that can soften, moisturize, and / or protect against irritation to the skin and also assist in the solubility of various skin care beneficial ingredients. These skin softeners can have a range of polarities, and it may be advantageous to select an emulsifier that is effective in the skin composition system regardless of the polarity of the skin softener.

[0017] Examples A - J (see Tables 1 - 3 below in this specification) are examples of skin care compositions containing a sodium acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer and C15 - 19 alkane and lauryl glucoside (commercially available as Natursol(™) EMI132 from SNF(™)) and various emulsifiers. Examples A - 1 and A - 2 included PEG - 100 stearate as an emulsifier and had sufficient viscosity with both skin softeners (1082 Pa·s and 842 Pa·s respectively). This indicates that the PEG - 100 stearate emulsifier is compatible with the sodium acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer.

[0018] These examples are compared to Examples A-1 and 2 (see Table 1 below in this specification) containing stearic acid PEG-100 as an emulsifier currently used in some marketed products. Examples A-1 and 2 have sufficient viscosities (1082 Pa·s and 842 Pa·s, respectively), indicating that the emulsifier is compatible with the sodium acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyltaurate copolymer.

[0019] Adhesion generally refers to the peak force required to separate an object from a composition after it has been brought into contact with the composition. At least some users associate good moisturizing properties with a high adhesion, particularly soon after (e.g., less than 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 minutes, or even less than 1 minute after application) or during the application of the product. However, an increase in adhesion typically comes with an increase in stringiness, and the moisturizer feels heavy on the user's skin. Also, while users may tolerate or even desire some degree of stringiness and / or heaviness during and / or immediately after application as a signal of moisturizing properties, it may not be desirable for the stringiness to persist for a longer time, e.g., longer than 1, 5, 7, 10 minutes, or even longer than 20 minutes after application of the product.

[0020] The composition can have an average adhesion of less than 800 g, or less than 790 g, for 20 - 40 minutes according to the adhesion method described herein. In some examples, the composition may not contain silicone.

[0021] The skin care composition may be a physically stable emulsion. The composition is physically stable if, between t = 0 (i.e., immediately after the composition is prepared) and a freeze-thaw cycle where the sample is held at -18°C for 24 hours and then returned to room temperature, or stored at 40°C for 1 month and then returned to room temperature, there is no phase separation detectable visually or the change in viscosity is less than 40% when stored in a glass bottle tightly closed by finger pressure. As used herein, "visually detectable" means that a human observer at 30 cm, under illumination at least equivalent to the illumination of a standard 100-watt incandescent light bulb, can visually distinguish, with the naked eye (excluding standard corrective lenses adapted to correct for myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism, or other corrective vision), if the product separates into two distinct layers within a 2-ounce clear glass bottle.

[0022] Unless specifically stated otherwise, all percentages are by weight of the cosmetic composition. Unless specifically stated otherwise, all ratios are weight ratios. All ranges include their endpoints and are combinable. The number of significant digits does not represent a limitation on the quantity being expressed nor on the accuracy of the measurement. Unless specifically indicated otherwise, all quantities are understood to be modified by the term "about". Unless otherwise indicated, all measurements are understood to have been made under ambient conditions of approximately 25°C, and "ambient conditions" means conditions of approximately 1 atmosphere and approximately 50% relative humidity. All numerical ranges include narrower ranges. The upper and lower range limitations separated by a dash are interchangeable in creating further ranges not explicitly separated.

[0073] Method of Use The skin care cream / humectant composition can be applied to the face, neck, and / or a part, or a combination thereof, at least once a day, twice a day, or more frequently per day during the treatment period. When applying twice a day, leave at least a 1 - 12 - hour interval between the first and second applications. Typically, the composition is applied in the morning and / or before bedtime at night. The treatment period herein is ideally a time sufficient for the skin care active substance to improve the appearance of the skin. The treatment period can last for at least one week (e.g., about one week, about two weeks, about four weeks, about eight weeks, or even about twelve weeks). In some cases, the treatment period extends over several months (i.e., about 3 - 12 months). In some cases, the composition can be applied at least once a day, or even twice a day, over most days of the week (e.g., at least 4 days, 5 days, or 6 days per week) during a treatment period of at least two weeks, four weeks, eight weeks, or twelve weeks.

[0074] The skin care composition can be intended for use before bedtime and / or in the morning. It can be evenly massaged over the entire face (including or excluding the eye area) and / or the neck. The product can be the final step of a skin care routine and can be applied after cleansing and optionally after applying a serum and / or other skin care products. The skin care composition can hydrate the skin to a visibly firm and plump skin for a lifted appearance. The skin composition can strengthen the skin's moisture barrier for elastic, plump, and youthful - looking skin. The skin care composition can reduce and / or soften wrinkles and fine lines.

[0075] Test method Adhesion method This method provides a suitable means for measuring the tack of the compositions described herein. In this method, a texture analyzer is used to bring into contact a film formed of the composition and a probe. Next, the texture analyzer measures the force required to separate the probe from the composition film. The tack force can be determined by this method. The tack method is configured to be carried out over a period of 100 minutes. Without being limited by theory, the tack characteristics exhibited by the composition during the course of the tack test are thought to approximate the tack characteristics exhibited by the composition during the first few minutes of use by the user (e.g., less than 10 minutes, 30 seconds to 5 minutes, or 1 minute to 3 minutes).

[0076] Figure 3 shows an exemplary test setup for the tack test. The tack of a film formed of the composition of interest is measured using a TA.XT2i brand texture analyzer (available from Texture Technologies Corporation, MA), or an equivalent device 50. The texture analyzer is equipped with a tack probe 52 in the form of an acrylic cylinder having a flat surface and a diameter of 12.75 mm. During the test, the flat surface of the probe 52 is brought into contact with the surface of the composition film. Thus, the flat surface of the probe and the surface of the film must be parallel to each other during the test so that sufficient contact by the film is obtained over the effective test surface of the probe 52. The film is made by filling or overfilling (and then stretching) a rectangular groove 54 (e.g., 25 cm in length × 30 mm in width × 0.25 mm in depth) with the composition to be tested.

[0077] The test is conducted using an adhesion test protocol at a pre-test speed of 0.10 mm / second, a test speed of 0.10 mm / second, and a post-test speed of 1.0 mm / second. The applied force is 200 g, the return distance is 4 mm, and the contact time is 5.0 seconds. The trigger type that designates sample contact is automatically set, and the trigger force is 5.0 g. When the test is conducted, the time increases as follows immediately after the film is prepared: less than 1 minute (i.e., immediately after the film is prepared), 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 40 minutes, 50 minutes, 60 minutes, 80 minutes, and 100 minutes. At each time point, the test is conducted on an area of the sample that has not been previously touched / tested. Each sample test is conducted in triplicate, and the average is recorded.

[0078] The average adhesion force between 20 and 40 minutes can be useful in determining whether the product is too sticky to be acceptable to consumers. To calculate the average adhesion force between 20 and 40 minutes, sum the adhesion forces at 20 minutes, 30 minutes, and 40 minutes, divide by 3, and report in units of grams (g).

[0079] Rheology test method This method provides a suitable means for measuring the viscosity of the compositions of this specification. The equipment used in this method is a rheometer of the TA Instruments brand, or equivalent. This equipment is set to perform a rotational tilt under controlled stress conditions of 0.01 - 2000 Pa for 240 seconds using parallel plates with serrated upper and lower shapes of 40 mm in diameter and a gap of 1.0 mm. The temperature is set at 25°C. The equipment protocol is set to collect 100 data points per decade in a logarithmic distribution and to stop the measurement when the shear rate exceeds 110 s -1 ^-1^.

[0080] After performing automated gap calibration, place approximately 5 grams of the sample at the center of the plate. Position the plate to provide a 1.05 mm gap and carefully remove any excess material squeezed out from the outer edge gap of the parallel plates. Next, move the plate by 0.05 mm for the last time to give a 1.00 mm gap and start the measurement. At the end of the test, save the data file for later plotting and analysis. Viscosity is reported in units of Pascal seconds (PaS) as the value at or near a shear rate of 0.10 s -1 and is reported in units of Pascal seconds (PaS) as the value at or near that shear rate.

Example

[0081] The following data and examples are provided to help illustrate the skin care compositions described herein. The compositions illustrated are provided for illustrative purposes only and should not be construed as limiting the disclosure, as many variations are possible without departing from the spirit and scope of the disclosure. All parts, percentages, and ratios herein are by weight unless otherwise specified.

[0082] Table 1 below shows the results of a consumer test. In this test, each consumer applied one of three products to their face at least once a day for two weeks. Next, as shown in Table 1, the products were evaluated as poor (0), fair (25), good (50), very good (75), or excellent (100) in 10 categories. Next, the total score was divided by the total number of consumers who used the product to determine the average score for each category.

[0083] Table 1 shows that Example 43 with a clean polymer (sodium acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer and C15-19 alkane and polyglyceryl-6 laurate and polyglyceryl-6) performed statistically better than the control products (Olay® Regenerist® and Olay® Total Effects®) with respect to categories related to moisture perception (e.g., the feeling that the skin remains moisturized, the feeling that the skin remains hydrated, the feeling that the skin remains moisturized throughout the day, and the feeling that the skin does not feel dry or tightened). Table 1 also shows that Example 43 with a clean polymer performed no worse than the control products with respect to categories related to feel (e.g., the feeling of not being covered with oil or stickiness / gumminess on the skin, the feeling of not looking greasy or shiny on the skin, fast absorption, and no unpleasant residue remaining). This is interesting because polymers that make consumers perceive more moisturization often have a negative trade-off with how the consumer feels on the user's skin. However, no such trade-off was seen with the copolymer of acrylate and taurate polymer thickeners.

[0084]

Table 1

[0085] The examples detailed in Tables 2 to 15 below were prepared by the following method. First, an aqueous phase was prepared by combining water with water-soluble components including, but not limited to, glycerin, chelating agents (e.g., disodium EDTA, EDDS), water-soluble skin care active substances (e.g., panthenol), and antioxidants (e.g., hydroxyacetophenone). The aqueous phase was mixed and heated to about 50 °C until the components were in solution and / or dispersed. The aqueous phase may contain about 70% to about 98%, or about 75% to about 95%, or about 80% to about 94%, or about 85% to about 93%, or about 88% to about 92% water based on the weight of the aqueous phase.

[0086] In a second container, an oil phase premix was prepared. The premix contained a liquid and waxy skin softener and one or more emulsifiers (e.g., stearic acid PEG-100). The premix was mixed and heated to about 50 °C until the components were completely dispersed in the premix.

[0087] The premix was added to the aqueous phase. The mixture was then milled to emulsify the oil phase premix in the aqueous phase, forming an emulsion in which the aqueous phase was the continuous phase and the oil phase was the dispersed phase. One or more additional components were added after emulsification while continuously mixing with an overhead mixer. The additional components may be added either before, after, or during cooling of the product to room temperature, and examples of additional components include, but are not limited to, polymer thickeners (e.g., SEPILIFE (trademark) NUDE), silicones, colorants, pigments, powders, mica, preservatives, fragrances, and additional skin active substances.

[0088] The viscosities of the examples in the tables below were determined using the rheology test methods disclosed herein.

[0089] For the examples detailed in Tables 2 to 4 below and in Figure 2, various emulsifiers were tested in skin care compositions containing, among other ingredients, in particular a sodium acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer. Each emulsifier was tested in a composition containing a skin softening agent comprising either isohexadecene, a nonpolar hydrocarbon oil, or triheptanoin, a triglyceride that is more polar than isohexadecene. An emulsifier can be acceptable to consumers if it serves to build sufficient viscosity, as shown when the composition has a viscosity of 550 Pa·s or more, preferably exceeding 850 Pa·s, according to the rheology test method described herein. This viscosity is considered the minimum value necessary to produce an acceptable composition that can be enclosed in a bottle that consumers will open during use, and compositions with higher viscosities may be more preferred by consumers. In some examples, the viscosity can be increased by adding more emulsifier and / or polymer. It may be preferable to select an emulsifier that results in a composition having sufficient viscosity with both isohexadecene and triheptanoin skin softening agents to show that the emulsifier builds viscosity over a range of products with different skin softening agent polarities. Also, many skin care products use more than one skin softening agent with different polarities to assist the solubility of various skin care beneficial ingredients, including those that improve the texture and tone of the skin or protect against UV damage.

[0090] Some examples were made using modified corn starch, and others were made using Zea mays corn starch (commercially available as AMAZE® HTP Pure from Nouryon®). When blended with either starch, no appreciable differences in viscosity and stability were found. Zea mays corn starch was found to be preferable in some large-scale production.

[0095] Examples having a viscosity of 550 Pa·s or more for both skin softeners were Examples A, E, G, and H.

[0096] Examples E-1 and 2 were not preferred because both had a pronounced bad odor that would be unpleasant to many consumers.

[0097] Example G-1 may be acceptable to consumers. However, Example G-2 is significantly sticky, which may make it difficult to spread the product on the user's skin, and the product may feel heavy and sticky after application. This emulsifier may not be preferred because it does not produce products that are preferred by consumers across a range of skin softeners.

[0098] Both Examples H-1 and 2 have a viscosity of 550 Pa·s or more, do not have an odor that causes significant discomfort, and may be acceptable to consumers.

[0099] Some consumers may prefer Examples A-1 and A-2 containing the stearic acid PEG-100 emulsifier. These compositions had a higher viscosity than H-1 and H-2, did not feel sticky, and did not have a pronounced odor.

[0100] Examples of the skin care compositions in Tables 5 to 15 were prepared, and these examples are considered to be stable, have sufficient viscosity, and will likely be acceptable to consumers.

[0113] The following Tables 16 and 17 show the results of consumer tests. In these tests, each consumer applied one of the products to the face for a period of time, preferably at least once a day. Next, as shown in Table 16, the products were evaluated in various categories, and the overall evaluation of the products was given as poor (0), fair (25), good (50), very good (75), or excellent (100). Next, the total score was divided by the total number of consumers who used the product to determine the average score for each category.

[0114] Table 16 shows that Example 52 containing a clean polymer had a statistically better overall evaluation compared to control products (Olay® Regenerist® Micro-sculpting Cream fragrance and fragrance free) having a sodium acrylate copolymer.

[0115] Table 17 shows that Examples 52 to 61 had similar overall evaluations. This suggests that Examples 52 to 61 would have a higher overall evaluation than the control products (Olay® Regenerist® Micro-sculpting Cream fragrance and fragrance free).
