A low VOC, HAPs free, substantially non-aqueous slurry for use as a rheology modifier in aqueous systems including but not limited to latex paints. The slurry comprises a particulate water-swelling polymer such as hydroxyethyl cellulose, mineral oil carrier liquid, a non-ionic surfactant, a particulate thickening agent, a defoamer, and optionally an amine component.

An environmentally benign anti-icing or deicing fluid providing long term protection for use on aircraft and runways, roads, bridges; and nautical, rail and automotive components. This invention relates to a method for removing contaminant material (e.g., graffiti) from a substrate, comprising: applying a coating composition to the substrate, the coating composition comprising water, a water-soluble film forming polymer, a wetting agent and a thixotropic additive; dehydrating the aqueous composition and/or crosslinking the polymer to form a sacrificial barrier coating; depositing the contaminant material on the barrier coating; and removing at least part of the barrier coating and the contaminant material from the substrate.

The invention relates to a process for preparing a solution which comprises urea urethanes and is effective as a thixotropic agent, which involves reacting at least two structurally different monohydroxy compounds with an excess of toluylene diisocyanate to form monoisocyanate adducts, removing the unreacted portion of the toluylene diisocyanate, and reacting the resultant monoisocyanate adducts with diamines in an aprotic solvent in the presence of a lithium salt to form urea urethanes. The invention also relates to the use of the solution to receive thixotropic coating compositions.

Various non-limiting embodiments disclosed herein relate generally to aqueous-coating compositions and thickening systems that can be used in aqueous coating-compositions. Paint formulations that exhibit improved performance characteristics due to the presence of a combination of a cellulose ether (carboxymethylcellulose and/or hydroxyethylcellulose) and a network building polymer (gellan gum, carrageenan, etc., as examples) as a thickening system therein are provided. Such a combination permits long-term shelf stability of the paint formulation while simultaneously according effective flow, leveling, and other important properties to the final paint formulation. The present invention provides a water-based coating and/or coating system that can be used to form sag resistant wet layers or coatings on a wide range of substrates. The present invention is a process for preparing an aqueous solution of a hydrophobically modified alkylene oxide poly(urethane-urea-allophanate) thickener by contacting isocyanate reactive groups with a stoichiometric excess of a diisocyanate, followed by reaction with water. The thickener surprisingly shows a maintenance or improvement in hiding in paint formulations while maintaining other critical rheological properties.
