The present invention relates generally to systems and methods for increasing oxygen availability to implantable devices. The preferred embodiments provide a membrane system configured to provide protection of the device from the biological environment and/or a catalyst for enabling an enzymatic reaction, wherein the membrane system includes a polymer formed from a high oxygen soluble material. The high oxygen soluble polymer material is disposed adjacent to an oxygen-utilizing source on the implantable device so as to dynamically retain high oxygen availability to the oxygen-utilizing source during oxygen deficits. Membrane systems of the preferred embodiments are useful for implantable devices with oxygen-utilizing sources and/or that function in low oxygen environments, such as enzyme-based electrochemical sensors and cell transplantation devices.

Well treatment is disclosed that includes injecting a well treatment fluid with insoluble polyol polymer such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) dispersed therein, depositing the insoluble polymer in the wellbore or an adjacent formation, and thereafter dissolving the polymer by reducing salinity and/or increasing temperature conditions in the environment of the polymer deposit. The method is disclosed for filter cake formation, fluid loss control, drilling, hydraulic fracturing and fiber assisted transport, where removal of the polyol at the end of treatment or after treatment is desired. To a resist composition, an alkali-soluble polymer having fluorinated ester-containing lactone units incorporated therein is included as an additive. The resist composition forms a resist film having a reduced contact angle after development. The resist film prevents water penetration during immersion lithography.

The present invention relates to a polymeric drug conjugate with one or more biologically active agents conjugated via an enzymatically cleavable linker to either a regular repeating linear unit comprising a water soluble polymer segment and a multifunctional chemical moiety, or a branched polymer comprising two or more water soluble polymer segments each bound to a common multifunctional chemical moiety, as well as to methods of making such conjugates. The present invention is also directed to pharmaceutical compositions comprising such conjugates and to the use of such conjugates to treat pathological conditions.

A molded component or article for biomedical use is prepared from a crosslinkable non-water-soluble polymer which when crosslinked and saturated with water forms a hydrogel. The polymer is formulated as a composition containing a non-aqueous diluent in addition to the polymer, the diluent being present in a volumetric proportion that is substantially equal to the volumetric proportion of water in the hydrogel that would be formed when the polymer is crosslinked and saturated with water. The composition is cast in a mold where the composition is exposed to conditions that cause crosslinking to occur by a reaction to which the non-aqueous diluent is inert. The crosslinking reaction produces a molded non-aqueous gel which is then converted to a hydrogel by substituting an aqueous liquid such as water or physiological saline for the non-aqueous diluent. The use of a molding composition whose curing consists essentially entirely of crosslinking results in a molding process that entails little or no shrinkage, and dimensional integrity is maintained up through the formation of the hydrogel by using the non-aqueous diluent in essentially the same volumetric proportion as water in the hydrogel.

Electroactive polymers are produced via electrospinning. The induction of electroactivity via electrospinning can be utilized with one or more soluble polymers with polarizable moieties. Suitable polymer classes include but are not limited to polyimides, polyamides, vinyl polymers, polyurethanes, polyureas, polythioureas, polyacrylates, polyesters, and biopolymers. Any one or more solvents sufficient to dissolve the one or more polymers of interest and make a spinnable solution can be utilized. The polymer can be electrospun into fiber and fibrous nonwoven mat. The electroactive polymer can be doped with inclusions, such as nanotubes, nanofibers, and piezoceramic powders for dielectric enhancement The availability of electroactive polymer fibers and fibrous nonwoven mat will enable many new applications for electroactive polymers.

The present invention provides polypeptide conjugates wherein a modifying group such as a water-soluble polymer, a therapeutic agent or a biomolecule is covalently linked to the polypeptide through a glycosyl linking group. In one embodiment, the polypeptide includes a glycosylation consensus sequence, wherein glycosylation occurs at an aromatic amino acid residue, such as the C-2 or the N-1 position of a tryptophan side chain. Exemplary polypeptides of the invention are those in which the glycosylation consensus sequence has been introduced into the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide by mutation. The present invention relates to a selectively soluble polymer capable of binding to one or more constituents in a mixture containing various biological materials and the methods of using such a polymer to purify a biomolecule from such a mixture. The polymer is soluble in the mixture under a certain set of process conditions such as pH or temperature and is rendered insoluble and precipitates out of solution upon a change in the process conditions. While in its solubilized state, the polymer is capable of binding to a selected entity within the stream such as impurities (DNA, RNA, host cell protein, endotoxins, etc) in a cell broth and remains capable of binding to that entity even after the polymer is precipitated out of solution. The precipitate can then be filtered out from the remainder of the stream and the desired biomolecule is recovered and further processed.

Microbe-resistant medical devices and methods of making these medical devices are provided. A base coat is applied to at least a portion of a surface of the device. That base coat includes one or more types of antimicrobial particles that are held in the base coat. A polymeric over coat is applied over at least a portion of the base coat. The over coat may be an organic soluble polymer, a water soluble polymer, a hydrogel or any other polymer capable of being coated onto a medical device. The polymer of the over coat is dissolvable in a solvent that does not dissolve the polymeric base coat during application of the over coat. The over coat remains free of the antimicrobial particles by not dissolving the base coat during the over coating process.

A polymer assisted deposition process for deposition of metal oxide films is presented. The process includes solutions of one or more metal precursor and soluble polymers having binding properties for the one or more metal precursor. After a coating operation, the resultant coating is heated at high temperatures to yield metal oxide films. Such films can be epitaxial in structure and can be of optical quality. The process can be organic solvent-free.

Disclosed are a carrier substrate which can be recycled and a method of manufacturing a flexible display apparatus using the same. The carrier substrate includes a rigid substrate, an adhesive layer, and a sacrificial layer. The adhesive layer is formed on the rigid substrate and has an adhesive property. The sacrificial layer is interposed between the rigid substrate and the adhesive layer. The sacrificial layer includes a material selected from the group consisting of a transparent metal oxide, an alkaline water-soluble polymer compound, and an acid water-soluble polymer compound.

The present invention relates to a bimodal polymer such as a soluble polymer capable of irreversibly binding to insoluble particulates and a subset of soluble impurities and also capable of reversibly binding to one or more desired biomolecules in an unclarified biological material containing stream and the methods of using such a material to purify one or more desired biomolecules from such a stream without the need for prior clarification. Such a polymer comprises domains of charged pendant groups such as primary, secondary, tertiary or quaternary amines, (first mode) and is rendered insoluble and precipitates out of solution simply upon complexing with oppositely charged solid particulates and a fraction of the soluble impurities in an amount sufficient to form an aggregate that can no longer be held in solution. The polymer further comprises other domains of pendant groups that are charged or uncharged, hydrophilic or hydrophobic or have a ligand that is selective for the biomolecule of interest depending on the process conditions such as pH, ionic strength, salts, and the like (second mode). When present in one mode, such as the uncharged form, said pendant groups are capable of binding to one or more desired biomolecules within the stream (protein, polypeptide, etc) in an unclarified cell broth. The precipitate can then be removed from the stream, such as by being filtered out from the remainder of the stream and the desired biomolecule is recovered such as by selective elution.

The present invention provides covalent conjugates between a polypeptide and a modifying group, such as a water-soluble polymer (e.g., PEG). The amino acid sequence of the polypeptide includes one or more O-linked glycosylation sequence, each being a substrate for a GIcNAc transferase.
