[Technical Field]

[0001] The present invention generally relates to a method and apparatus for the treatment of clean / washed, generally rectangular laundry items, typically in industrial laundry facilities, of the type having paired opposing edges, the edges defining opposing short sides and opposing long sides, respectively, of the laundry item. [Background technology]

[0002] Large clean laundry items such as linen are typically sent from a washer / dryer to an ironer and then folded. [0005] With the above-mentioned objectives in mind, the present invention provides an apparatus for processing clean / washed, generally rectangular laundry articles, comprising: a laundry transport mechanism defining a first machine direction and including movable clamps; components configured to hold individual laundry articles in an open configuration at or near two diagonally opposite corners and to pass a hanging laundry section at or near another corner of the laundry article to the movable clamps; two clamping devices for clamping engagement with the laundry articles, the two clamping devices being displaceably mounted so as to be movable independently of one another in a second machine direction perpendicular to the first machine direction, and clamps movable into and along a gap between the opposing jaws of the two clamping devices. By moving the clamps into and along the gap to essentially drape the laundry articles over the lower jaws, reliable positioning of the laundry articles is achieved, resulting in reduced downtime and increased machine speed, which are essential factors for ensuring economical operation of the apparatus.

Optionally, alignment of the laundry with respect to the first machine direction is performed by moving the two clamping devices relative to each other along the first machine direction, inter alia to correct misalignment caused by the manner in which the pair of clamping devices receive the laundry.
