Abstract
Description
[Technical Field]
[0001] The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device. [Background technology]
[0002] A conventional liquid crystal display device will be described below with reference to FIG. 3. FIG. 3 is a schematic diagram showing a conventional liquid crystal display device, with (a) a top view and (b) an A-A' cross-sectional view. The liquid crystal display device shown in FIG. 3 includes a liquid crystal panel 1. The liquid crystal panel 1 is configured as a reflective liquid crystal display panel by bonding together a first substrate 2, such as a silicon substrate on which pixel electrodes 5a and an alignment film 4 are formed, and a second substrate 3, such as a glass substrate on which a counter electrode 5b and an alignment film 4 are formed, via a peripheral seal 7 containing spacers 6, so that the electrode surfaces face each other, thereby forming a gap between the first substrate 2 and the second substrate 3, and sealing liquid crystal 8 in the gap.
[0003] The liquid crystal panel 1 is mounted on a circuit board 9, and electrode pads 10 provided on the first substrate 2 are electrically connected to electrode pads 11 provided on the circuit board 9 by wires 12, and counter electrodes 5b provided on the second substrate 3 are electrically connected to electrode pads 11 provided on the circuit board 9 by a UV-curable conductive resin 14 containing Ag as a main component, for example. A voltage is applied between the pixel electrodes 5a and counter electrodes 5b via these electrical connections, thereby displaying an image using the liquid crystal 8. Note that a moisture-curable protective resin such as a silicone resin may be applied around the liquid crystal panel 1 to cover the wires 12 and conductive resin 14 (see, for example, Patent Document 1). [0004] [Patent Document 1] Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2014-182159 Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0005] The conductive resin 14 that electrically connects the opposing electrode 5b provided on the second substrate 2 and the electrode pad 11 provided on the circuit board 9 is applied by an application device such as a dispenser. However, since the applied conductive resin 14 wets and spreads outward, the external dimensions of the liquid crystal panel 1 are effectively enlarged accordingly, resulting in an enlargement of the liquid crystal display device.
[0006] The present invention has been made in view of the above problems, and has an object to provide a liquid crystal display device that can prevent an increase in size. [Means for solving the problem]
[0007] A liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal panel in which liquid crystal is sealed in a gap formed by bonding a first substrate on which pixel electrodes are formed and a second substrate on which counter electrodes are formed so that the pixel electrodes and the counter electrodes face each other, and a removed portion of the second substrate consisting of a notch or a through-hole is provided on the outer periphery of the second substrate, and the counter electrode adjacent to the removed portion is connected to one end of a conductive resin.
[0008] The liquid crystal display device may be such that the removed portion is provided at a corner of the second substrate.
[0009] The liquid crystal display device may be such that the removed portion is formed by a notch formed by C-chamfering.
[0010] The liquid crystal display device may further include a circuit board supporting the first substrate, and the other end of the conductive resin is connected to an electrode pad provided on the circuit board.
[0011] The other end of the conductive resin may be connected to an electrode pad provided on the first substrate. [Effects of the Invention]
[0012] According to the present invention, it is possible to prevent the liquid crystal display device from becoming large. [Brief explanation of the drawings]
[0013] [Figure 1] 1A and 1B are a top view and a cross-sectional view taken along the line A-A', respectively, illustrating a liquid crystal display device according to a first embodiment of the present invention; [Figure 2] 1A and 1B are a top view and a cross-sectional view taken along the line A-A', respectively, illustrating a liquid crystal display device according to a second embodiment of the present invention; [Figure 3] Schematic diagram of a conventional liquid crystal display device, (a) a top view, (b) an A-A' cross-sectional view. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0014] Hereinafter, embodiments (Examples 1 and 2) of the present invention will be described. [Example]
[0015] 1A and 1B are schematic diagrams showing a liquid crystal display device according to a first embodiment of the present invention, in which (a) is a top view and (b) is a cross-sectional view taken along the line A-A'. The liquid crystal display device according to the first embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to FIG.
[0016] 1 includes a liquid crystal panel 21. The liquid crystal panel 21 is configured as a reflective liquid crystal panel by laminating a first substrate 2 made of, for example, a silicon substrate on which pixel electrodes 5a and an alignment film 4 are formed, and a second substrate 3 made of, for example, a glass substrate on which a counter electrode 5b and an alignment film 4 are formed, with a peripheral seal 7 containing spacers 6 interposed between the first substrate 2 and the second substrate 3 so that the electrode surfaces face each other.
[0017] The liquid crystal panel 21 is mounted on a circuit board 9, and electrode pads 10 provided on the first substrate 2 and electrode pads 11 provided on the circuit board 9 are electrically connected by wires 12, and counter electrodes 5b provided on the second substrate 3 and electrode pads 11 provided on the circuit board 9 are electrically connected by ultraviolet-curing conductive resin 14 whose main component is Ag, for example. A voltage is applied between the pixel electrodes 5a and counter electrodes 5b via these electrical connections, thereby displaying an image on the liquid crystal 8. Note that a moisture-absorbing and curing protective resin such as a silicone resin may be applied around the liquid crystal panel 21 to cover the wires 12 and conductive resin 14.
[0018] Liquid crystal panel 21 differs from liquid crystal panel 1 of the prior art in that two corners of second substrate 3 at a portion (offset portion) where second substrate 3 protrudes horizontally relative to first substrate 2 are linearly cut away (C-chamfered) by dicing or the like, as shown in FIG. 1 , thereby forming removed portions 15 of second substrate 3 at the two corners of second substrate 3. The angle of the end face of removed portion 15 with respect to the two sides that form the corners of second substrate 3 is, for example, 45°. Electrode pads 11 of circuit board 9 are provided directly below removed portion 15. Counter electrode 5b adjacent to removed portion 15 is electrically connected to electrode pad 11 of circuit board 9 via conductive resin 14.
[0019] In this embodiment, even if the conductive resin 14 spreads outward somewhat, the conductive resin 14 is generally contained within the range of the corner of the second substrate 3 before the removal portion 15 is formed, thereby preventing the liquid crystal display device from becoming larger. [Example]
[0020] 2A and 2B are schematic diagrams showing a liquid crystal display device according to a second embodiment of the present invention, in which (a) is a top view and (b) is a cross-sectional view taken along the line A-A'. The liquid crystal display device according to the second embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to FIG. 2.
[0021] The liquid crystal display device according to the second embodiment of the present invention includes a liquid crystal panel 31. As shown in FIG. 3 , in the liquid crystal panel 31, two corners of the second substrate 3 located on the side where the electrode pads 10 to which the wires 12 are connected are linearly cut (C-chamfered) by dicing or the like, thereby forming removed portions 19 of the second substrate 3 at the two corners of the second substrate 3. The angle of the end face of the removed portion 19 with respect to the two sides forming the corners of the second substrate 3 is, for example, 45°. The electrode pads 18 of the first substrate 2 are provided directly below the removed portions 19. The electrode pads 18 of the first substrate 2 are electrically connected to the electrode pads 10 of the first substrate 2, for example, via an arbitrary wiring pattern (not shown). The counter electrode 5b adjacent to the removed portion 19 is electrically connected to the electrode pads 18 of the first substrate 2 via a conductive resin 14.
[0022] In this embodiment, even if the conductive resin 14 spreads outward to some extent, the conductive resin 14 is generally contained within the range of the corner of the second substrate 3 before the removal portion 19 is formed, thereby preventing the liquid crystal display device from becoming larger.
[0023] The present invention is not limited to the above-described embodiments, and various modifications are possible without departing from the spirit of the present invention. Furthermore, the above-described embodiments can be implemented in combination with each other without departing from the spirit of the present invention. For example, the removed portions 15, 19 of the second substrate 3 may be provided in portions of the outer periphery of the second substrate 3 other than the corners. The removed portions 15, 19 may be cutouts that are, for example, V-shaped, L-shaped, U-shaped, or arc-shaped when viewed from above. The removed portions 15, 19 may also be through-holes (e.g., circular through-holes) provided slightly inward from the edge of the second substrate 3. However, if the second substrate 3 is a brittle substrate such as a glass substrate, it is difficult to form through-holes in the second substrate 3. From this perspective, it is advantageous for the removed portions 15, 19 to be notches. In particular, when the removed portions 15, 19 are formed in the corners of the second substrate 3 as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, manufacturing is easy because it is only necessary to cut the corners linearly. The present invention can also be applied to a liquid crystal display device equipped with a transmission type liquid crystal panel in which the first substrate 2 and the second substrate 3 are both made of transparent glass substrates or plastic substrates.
