Abstract
Description
[Technical Field]
[0001] The present invention relates to an aerosol generating device, and more particularly to an aerosol generating device having a partially opaque portion for making the lighting unit invisible when the lighting unit is not emitting light. [Background technology]
[0002] Aerosol generating devices typically include luminous indicators to display technical information or operational status of the device or consumable.
[0003] Typically, the light-emitting indicator is disposed within the housing of the aerosol generating device, and the housing is provided with a light-transmitting portion or hole to allow the light-emitting indicator to be visible to a user. However, because the light-transmitting hole or light-transmitting portion is visible to a user even when the light-emitting indicator is not emitting any light, it may be difficult to distinguish between a state in which the light-emitting indicator is emitting light and a state in which the light-emitting indicator is not emitting light under adverse lighting conditions. Additionally, such a housing configuration disrupts the appearance of the outer surface of the aerosol generating device and is therefore not aesthetically pleasing.
[0004] Furthermore, when an illumination unit of an aerosol generating device includes multiple light sources forming a continuous illumination area, visual feedback indicating the status of the aerosol generating device or consumables used in the aerosol generating device is typically provided by having many light sources illuminated (“on”) and the remaining light sources not illuminated (“off”). However, a user may not be able to easily identify those light sources that are “off.” This is especially true when the light source of a lighting unit that is not emitting light is difficult for the user's eye to detect. Therefore, a user may have difficulty knowing where the continuous illumination area begins and ends, which may make it difficult to understand the status value indicated by the illuminated light sources. Summary of the Invention
[0005] Therefore, there is a need for an aerosol generating device with a housing that allows for a more reliable display of information to the user of the device and / or provides an aesthetically pleasing design. [Means for solving the problem]
[0006] Some or all of the above objects are achieved by the invention as defined by the features of the independent claims. Preferred embodiments of the invention are defined by the features of the dependent claims.
[0007] A first aspect of the present invention is an aerosol generation device having a housing and an illumination unit capable of emitting light, the illumination unit being covered by an outer wall of the housing, the outer wall including or consisting essentially of a light-transmitting portion arranged so that light emitted by the illumination unit passes through the light-transmitting portion, and the illumination unit is not visible through the light-transmitting portion from outside the device when the illumination unit is not emitting light. The light-transmitting portion allows the illumination unit to be visible when the illumination unit is emitting light. Thus, the light-transmitting portion may enable the illumination unit to provide visual feedback to a user of the device displaying information about the aerosol generation device. Meanwhile, the light-transmitting property prevents the illumination unit from being visible when it is not emitting light, thus preventing a user from believing that the illumination unit is signaling certain information about the status of the device or consumables when in fact it is not signaling that information. Furthermore, the non-visible illumination unit prevents visual disruption of the lines and surfaces of the outer surface of the device housing, achieving an aesthetically pleasing design. It should be noted that the term "invisible" refers to invisibility to the human eye achieved under typical ambient lighting conditions.
[0008] According to a second aspect, in the above-mentioned aspect, the light-transmitting portion comprises a layered structure including a partially or completely transparent layer and a partially light-reflecting layer. The layered structure increases production flexibility. Furthermore, the layers of the layered structure provide different properties for achieving light transparency, in particular the property of transmitting light emitted by the lighting unit and hiding the lighting unit from the user's eyes when the lighting unit is not emitting light. The layered structure can be adapted to meet different requirements and demands for the aerosol generating device and the respective manufacturing process.
[0009] According to a third aspect, in the previous aspects, the partially or fully transparent layer is positioned closer to the lighting unit than the partially light-reflecting layer, which further enhances the optimal properties of the light-transmitting portion by reflecting a significant portion of light incident on the light-reflecting layer from outside the housing to improve the hiding power of the lighting unit when it is not emitting light, while at the same time allowing light to pass through the light-reflecting layer to reach the outside of the housing so that the lighting unit is visible through the light-transmitting layer when it is emitting light.
[0010] According to a fourth aspect, in the previous aspects, the partially light-reflective layer comprises a coating made by physical vapor deposition (PVD), chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and / or non-conductive vacuum metallization (NCVM) processes, which allow for accurate and precise deposition of layers onto surfaces with well-defined properties to achieve the desired optical properties of the light-reflective layer.
[0011] According to a fifth aspect, in any one of the second to fourth aspects, the partially light-reflective layer comprises an aluminum, copper, or bronze material, which are commonly available and cost-effective materials that provide well-known light reflectivity.
[0012] According to a sixth aspect, in any one of the preceding aspects, the layered structure includes a light diffusing layer that allows light to pass through the light diffusing layer while further assisting in making the lighting unit invisible when the lighting unit is not emitting light.
[0013] According to a seventh aspect, in the above-mentioned aspects, the light diffusing layer forms the outer surface of the light-transmitting portion. The light diffusing layer as the outer layer serves as a protective layer because damage to the light diffusing layer, such as scratches, bumps, dents, and small holes, is less visible on the light diffusing layer due to its light diffusing properties, compared to an outer layer with a shiny, glossy, or mirror finish.
[0014] According to an eighth aspect, in any one of the second to seventh aspects, one or more layers of the layered structure are colored or tinted, which allows the light-transmitting portion to appear in various colors and shades for different appearances.
[0015] According to a ninth aspect, in any one of the preceding aspects, the housing includes a main body in which the lighting unit is disposed, and a panel member movably and / or detachably attached to the main body, the panel member including or consisting essentially of an outer wall of the housing. The movable and / or detachable panel including a light-transmitting layer allows easy and convenient access to the lighting unit and other components of the aerosol generation device when maintenance or repair is required.
[0016] According to a tenth aspect, in any one of the preceding aspects, the shape and / or length and / or width and / or radius of the light-transmitting portion correspond to the shape and / or length and / or width and / or radius of the lighting unit, respectively, thereby improving uniform illumination of the light-transmitting portion by light emitted from the lighting unit.
[0017] According to an eleventh aspect, in any one of the preceding aspects, the length and / or width and / or radius of the light-transmitting portion is so small that it is not visually discernible from outside the device when the lighting unit is not emitting light, which further helps to make the lighting unit invisible to the human eye when the lighting unit is not emitting light.
[0018] According to a twelfth aspect, in any one of the preceding aspects, the lighting unit is positioned such that at least a portion of the light emitted by the lighting unit passes through the light-transmitting portion in a direction substantially perpendicular to the outer surface of the outer wall of the housing. This aspect reveals that the position of the light-transmitting portion substantially coincides with the position of the lighting unit, ensuring transmission of the light emitted from the lighting unit through the light-transmitting portion to the outside of the light-transmitting portion.
[0019] According to a thirteenth aspect, in any one of the preceding aspects, the light-transmitting portion and at least a portion of the housing adjacent the light-transmitting portion, and / or substantially the entire exterior wall of the housing, are provided with substantially the same exterior surface finish, thereby reducing the visibility of the transition between the light-transmitting portion and the adjacent portion of the housing, thereby making the light-transmitting portion visually indistinguishable from the device housing and further concealing the lighting unit when no light is being emitted.
[0020] According to a fourteenth aspect, in the aforementioned aspects, the surface finish is a glossy finish, a mirror finish, or a matte finish. This allows the light-transmitting portion to be seen with a desired visual effect and may further improve the concealment of the lighting unit when not emitting light. Furthermore, a glossy or mirror finish may improve tactile grip of the outer surface of the light-transmitting portion, while a matte finish may provide a finish that can mask or hide surface defects, for example, resulting from wear and tear on the aerosol generating device.
[0021] According to a fifteenth aspect, in the foregoing aspects, the surface finish is provided by one of a light reflecting layer, a light diffusing layer, and a combination thereof, which may eliminate the need for an additional or separate step to apply the surface finish.
[0022] According to a sixteenth aspect, in any one of the preceding aspects, the lighting unit includes one or more LED light sources or LED light strips. LED light sources offer high energy efficiency, long life, potential for miniaturization, and low heat generation, making them ideal for use in small, portable devices such as aerosol generating devices.
[0023] According to a seventeenth aspect, in any one of the preceding aspects, the lighting unit includes a plurality of light sources arranged in a line or a curve.
[0024] An eighteenth aspect of the present invention is a lighting unit for an aerosol generating device, the lighting unit including a plurality of light sources, each configured to operate in a first power operating mode in which the light source is illuminated at a first brightness level and a second power mode in which the light source is illuminated at a second brightness level different from the first brightness level, wherein one or more of the plurality of light sources form a continuous illuminated area when one or more of the plurality of light sources emits light, and the illuminated area is configured to provide a user with visual feedback indicating the status of the aerosol generating device or a consumable used with the aerosol generating device. As in the prior art, the status can be indicated by operating multiple light sources in the first power operating mode (“on”). However, the difference in brightness between the first and second brightness levels allows the lighting unit to operate (illuminate) even those light sources that are “off,” for example, with less power, rather than not operating them at all. This has the advantage that the user can more easily identify those light sources that are “off.” This is particularly true when the lighting unit is used in an aerosol generating device described in any one of aspects 1 to 17, in which the lighting unit is not visible from outside the device when it is not emitting light, or in devices in general in which the light source of a lighting unit that is not emitting light is difficult to detect by the user's eye.
[0025] According to a 19th aspect, in any of the above aspects, the illumination area includes an area illuminated at a first brightness level and / or an area illuminated at a second brightness level, thereby enabling the lighting unit to indicate a status based on the area illuminated at the first brightness level and the area illuminated at the second brightness level.
[0026] According to a twentieth aspect, in the above aspects, the total range of the illumination area is the range of the area illuminated at the first brightness level if the illuminated area includes only areas illuminated at the first brightness level, or the combined range of areas illuminated at the first brightness level and areas illuminated at the second brightness level if the illumination area includes only areas illuminated at the first brightness level and areas illuminated at the second brightness level, or the range of the area at the second brightness level if the illumination area includes only areas illuminated at the second brightness level.
[0027] According to the 21st aspect, in the 19th or 20th aspect, the visual feedback is based on a relationship between the extent of the area illuminated at the second luminance level and the total extent of the illumination area, thereby enabling the lighting unit to display a status based on the total extent of the illumination area as a reference for the displayed status.
[0028] According to the 22nd aspect, in the 18th to 21st aspects, the full range of the illumination area represents the maximum range of state values displayed by visual feedback.
[0029] According to a 23rd aspect, in the aforementioned aspects, the range of the area illuminated at the second brightness level represents a sub-range within a maximum range of values for the displayed information, the range of the sub-range relative to the range of the maximum range of values corresponding to the range of the area illuminated at the second brightness level relative to the full range of the illuminated area, thereby enabling the lighting unit to display more complex conditions, in particular conditions within a reference range or conditions related to a particular reference point technically related to the aerosol generating device or a consumable used with the aerosol generating device.
[0030] According to a 24th aspect, in any one of the 18th to 23rd aspects, each of the plurality of light sources is an LED capable of emitting light in a plurality of colors.
[0031] According to a 25th aspect, in any of the above aspects, the illumination area is illuminated with a single color.
[0032] According to the 26th aspect, in either one of the 24th or 25th aspects, different colors of the lighting area represent different types of information, thereby enabling the lighting unit to display several types of states.
[0033] According to a 27th aspect, in any one of the 18th to 26th aspects, the lighting unit is configured to form one or more patterns in the lighting area, each of the one or more patterns representing a different state of the aerosol generation device or a consumable used with the aerosol generation device, thereby enabling the lighting unit to simultaneously display one or more types of states.
[0034] According to a 28th aspect, in any of the preceding aspects, at least one of the one or more patterns includes a moving pattern or a dynamically changing pattern.
[0035] According to a 29th aspect, in the above aspects, the direction of movement of the moving pattern indicates a change in the state displayed by one of the one or more patterns. The 28th and 29th aspects of the invention enable the lighting unit to indicate a change in the displayed state.
[0036] According to a 30th aspect, in any one of the 18th to 29th aspects, the status of the aerosol generation device or the consumables used with the aerosol generation device includes at least one of the elapsed and / or remaining activation time of the device, the progress of steam inhalation with the device, the time of use since activation of the device, the consumed and / or remaining amount of aerosol-generating substrate in the consumables, the operating temperature of the device, and the battery depletion level of the device. By displaying these statuses to the user, information is provided to the user, and based on this information, the user can properly operate, maintain, and / or care for the aerosol generation device or the consumables used with the aerosol generation device.
[0037] According to a thirty-first aspect, in the above aspects, the activation time is the time required to heat up a heating unit included in the aerosol generating device before a user can begin consuming the consumable, thereby enabling the user to operate the aerosol generating device and the consumable used with the aerosol generating device in a predetermined manner.
[0038] According to the 32nd aspect, in any one of the 18th to 31st aspects, the plurality of light sources are arranged in a straight line or a curved line, and / or the illumination area includes a curved or bent shape.
[0039] In the thirty-third aspect, in any one of the eighteenth to thirty-second aspects, the second luminance level is higher than the first luminance level.
[0040] According to a 34th aspect, in any one of the 18th to 33rd aspects, the first brightness level is at least 2%, preferably at least 3%, more preferably at least 5% of the maximum brightness of each of the light sources, and not more than 30%, preferably not more than 20%, more preferably not more than 15% of the maximum brightness of each of the light sources. These brightness levels provide a compromise between visibility and visual contrast of the area at the first brightness and energy consumption of the lighting unit.
[0041] According to a 35th aspect, in any one of the 18th to 34th aspects, the second luminance level is at least 70%, preferably at least 80%, more preferably at least 90% of the maximum luminance of each of the light sources. These luminance levels provide optimal contrast between areas of the illumination area illuminated at the first luminance level and areas of the illumination area illuminated at the second luminance level, further improving visibility of the illumination area under ambient lighting conditions.
[0042] According to the 36th aspect, in the first aspect, the lighting unit is the lighting unit according to any one of the 18th to 35th aspects of the present invention.
[0043] According to a 37th aspect, in any one of the 1st to 18th aspects, the lighting unit includes or essentially consists of a light source configured to generate light. It should be noted that a light source is a component or element that generates light.
[0044] According to a thirty-eighth aspect, in any of the preceding aspects, the light source comprises or consists essentially of a luminescent light source, which is typically advantageous over commonly used incandescent light sources due to their higher efficiency and compact size.
[0045] According to a 39th aspect, in any one of the 1st to 17th or 37th to 38th aspects, the lighting unit is positioned with respect to the light-transmitting portion such that the lighting unit emits light directly through the light-transmitting portion. It should be noted that "directly" means that the light emitted from the lighting unit reaches the light-transmitting portion substantially without relying on scattering or reflecting components, such as light guides or mirror components. This reduces the number of required parts and components, thereby miniaturizing the overall size of the aerosol generation device and reducing manufacturing costs.
[0046] According to a fortieth aspect in accordance with the previous aspects, the lighting unit is configured to emit light through all layers of the light-transmitting portion. [Brief explanation of the drawings]

[0048] Preferred embodiments of the present invention are described below in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.
[0049] 1 generally includes a housing with an opening 210 through which an aerosol-generating substrate 110, such as a liquid or a tobacco stick, can be at least partially inserted into an aerosol-generating chamber 120 of the device. The device 100 further includes a power source 130, which can be a rechargeable and / or replaceable power source such as a battery, and circuitry 140 for controlling the operation of the aerosol-generating device 100.
[0050] FIG. 2A shows an aerosol generation device 100 having an outer wall 200 of the device housing. The outer wall 200 consists essentially of a light-transmitting portion 300 that covers a non-light-emitting lighting unit 210. When the lighting unit 210 is not emitting light, the lighting unit is not visible to the human eye through the light-transmitting portion 300 from outside the aerosol generation device. The dotted rectangle in FIG. 2A merely indicates the location and extent of the lighting unit 210. The light-transmitting portion may include a layered structure as described below in connection with FIGS. 3A, 3B, and 3C. The light-transmitting portion may have a glossy, mirror-like, or matte exterior surface finish, and the housing of the aerosol generation device may have the same surface finish as the light-transmitting portion, such that the appearance of the exterior surface of the housing is substantially indistinguishable from the appearance of the exterior surface of the light-transmitting portion.
[0051] FIG. 2B illustrates an aerosol generation device 100 with an outer wall 200 of the device housing, the outer wall 200 including a light-transmitting portion that occupies only a portion of the outer wall 200. While the light-transmitting portion is shown to have a rectangular shape, the shape and / or size of the light-transmitting portion may have any suitable shape, such as, but not limited to, the shapes and sizes of the light-transmitting portions described in connection with FIGS. 5A-5D. While the size and location of the lighting unit or lighting area covered by the outer wall 200 and the light-transmitting portion are shown to substantially match the size and location of the light-transmitting portion in the front view of the aerosol generation device, the size and location of the lighting unit or lighting area may have any suitable size and be located in any suitable location. However, the former configuration is preferred for optimal lighting performance of the lighting unit through the light-transmitting portion. It should be noted that when the lighting unit is not emitting light, the lighting unit is not visible through the outer wall 200 and the light-transmitting portion 300 because it is covered by the outer wall 200 and the light-transmitting portion 300.
[0052] FIG. 2C illustrates an aerosol generation device, which may be the aerosol generation device described in connection with FIGS. 2A and 2B. In the state shown in FIG. 2C, the lighting unit and its illumination area 210 emit light. The light emitted by the illumination area 210 is transmitted through the light-transmitting portion 300 and is visible from the outside of the device, particularly to the human eye of a user of the aerosol generation device. As a result, the illumination area 210 provides visual feedback indicating the status of the aerosol generation device or a consumable used with the aerosol generation device. While the lighting unit and illumination area 210 are shown as emitting light at a single brightness level for the entire illumination area, two different brightness levels and areas of the illumination area 210 having different brightness levels are also possible. Such lighting embodiments are described in a non-limiting manner in connection with FIGS. 4A-5D.
[0053] It should be noted that in any of the embodiments of the invention described herein, the term "invisible" means that the lighting unit cannot be seen by the naked eye through the light-transmitting portion when the lighting unit is not emitting light, under commonly occurring ambient lighting conditions, without some special visual aid or equipment, or under special lighting conditions that do not occur naturally.
[0054] 3A shows a schematic diagram of the structure of the light-transmitting portion 300. In its simplest form, the light-transmitting portion 300 may include a translucent layer 320. The translucency of the layer is such that much of the light incident on the translucent layer 320 from outside the aerosol-generating device is transmitted through the translucent layer 320, reflected by the illumination unit 210 back towards the translucent layer 320, and then reflected or scattered towards the outside of the aerosol-generating device rather than being transmitted through the translucent layer 320 back out of the device.
[0055] 3B , the light-transmitting portion includes a layered structure including a semi-transparent layer 320 or a partially or fully transparent layer 340 disposed closer to the lighting unit 210, and a light-reflecting layer 330 disposed on the surface of the semi-transparent layer 320 or the partial or fully transparent layer 340, further away from the lighting unit 210 than the semi-transparent layer 320 or the partial or fully transparent layer 340. The semi-transparent layer 320 and the partial or fully transparent layer 340 include a semi-transparent or partially or fully transparent plastic material, such as PMMA, PVC, PC, PET, PTFE, a resin-based material, or a similar material.
[0056] The partially light-reflective layer may be obtained by physical vapor deposition (PVD), chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and / or non-conductive vacuum metallization (NCVM) processes, or similar deposition methods. The deposited material may include copper, silver, bronze, or similar metallic materials. The partially light-reflective layer 330 may be an outer layer that forms the outer surface of the light-transmitting portion and may additionally provide the light-transmitting portion with a glossy or mirror-like finish.
[0057] As shown in FIG. 3C , the layered structure of the light-transmitting portion may include a transparent layer 340 disposed closest to the lighting unit 210. A partially light-reflecting layer 330, as described above in connection with FIG. 3B , is disposed on the transparent layer 340, further away from the lighting unit 210. A light-diffusing layer 350 is disposed on the surface of the light-reflecting layer 330, farthest from the lighting unit 210, and forms the outer surface of the light-transmitting portion 300. The light-diffusing layer 350 may form the outer surface of the light-transmitting portion 300. The light-diffusing layer 350 may form a layer that protects the light-reflecting layer from external influences and may comprise a resin-based material or a transparent plastic material. Furthermore, the light-diffusing layer 350 may be tinted or colored to impart a desired visual effect to the light-transmitting portion 300 and may additionally provide a matte surface finish to the outer surface of the light-transmitting portion.
[0058] 3A-3C, the layers of the layered structure may be arranged in different stacking orders. For example, in the embodiment described in connection with FIG. 3B, the light-reflecting layer 330 may be positioned closest to the lighting unit 210, or in the embodiment described in connection with FIG. 3C, the light-reflecting layer 330 may be positioned furthest from the lighting unit 210 and form the outer surface of the light-transmitting portion 300. Additionally, the light-reflecting layer 330 may provide a glossy or mirror-like finish to the light-transmitting portion 300.
[0059] The light-reflecting layer 330 reflects some light and is transmitted by the remaining light. Light can pass through the light-reflecting layer 330 in both directions. However, when the lighting unit 210 is not emitting light and the illuminated area behind the light-transmitting portion 300 remains dark relative to the surroundings of the aerosol generation device, which in this case is typically the bright side, the dark side becomes difficult to see from the bright side because it is obscured by the much brighter reflection of the bright side.
[0060] More specifically, the light from the same side that is reflected by the light-reflecting layer 330 back to the bright side is much more than the light that is transmitted from the dark side, outweighing the small amount of light that is transmitted from the dark side to the bright side. In this way, the lighting unit 210 remains invisible when it is not emitting light. On the other hand, when the lighting unit 210 emits light, the illuminated area becomes the bright side, and the transmitted light from the lighting unit 210 is bright enough to be visible through the light-transmitting portion 330 without being outweighed in amount by light from the surroundings that is reflected by the light-reflecting layer 330. In this way, the light-transmitting portion 330 acts like a two-way mirror, making the lighting unit 210 visible or invisible to the surroundings depending on whether the lighting unit 210 is turned on or not.
[0061] It should be noted that when the housing of an aerosol generating device according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a main body and a movable panel member including or consisting essentially of a light-transmitting portion, the panel member and the main body are closely coupled to each other to substantially prevent light emitted from a lighting unit arranged in the main body from leaking out between the panel member and the main body unit and to prevent leaking light from adversely affecting the visibility of the illuminated area through the light-transmitting portion.
[0062] Furthermore, for any embodiment of the present invention, it should be noted that the lighting unit may preferably be a light source, i.e., a component configured to generate light. The light source may generally include or consist essentially of an incandescent light source, and preferably include or consist essentially of a light-emitting light source. Light-emitting light sources, such as LED light sources, are particularly preferred due to their high efficiency, low heat generation, low power consumption, and compact size. Light-emitting light sources may be provided in a variety of sizes, shapes, and / or colors. Furthermore, for any embodiment of the present invention, it should be noted that a lighting unit that emits light through a light-transmitting portion means that the lighting unit is positioned relative to the light-transmitting portion such that the lighting unit emits light directly through the light-transmitting portion, i.e., such that light emitted from the lighting unit reaches the light-transmitting portion substantially without relying on scattering or reflective components, such as light guides or mirror components. Furthermore, the lighting unit is positioned and configured to emit light such that light emitted through the light-transmitting portion is transmitted through all layers of the light-transmitting portion.
[0063] 4A shows a lighting unit 210 including multiple light sources. Each of the light sources may be an LED light source that may additionally emit light in a different color. The lighting unit 210 shown in FIG. 4A is not emitting light and is therefore in an "off" state. Although the lighting unit is shown having a rectangular size, multiple light sources may be arranged to form any suitable continuous shape of any suitable size.
[0064] In FIG. 4B , all of the multiple light sources of the lighting unit emit light to form a continuous illumination area 210 that substantially matches the size and shape of the lighting unit. Alternatively, only a portion of the multiple light sources may emit light, forming an illumination area 210 whose overall extent differs from the overall extent of the lighting unit. The illumination area 210 may be illuminated at a first brightness level when the multiple light sources operating at a first power level form an area 210a illuminated at a first brightness level. In this state, the lighting unit is in an “on” state, providing visual feedback that the status of aerosol generation is being displayed by the lighting unit. When all of the multiple light sources of the lighting unit emit light at a second brightness level by operating at a second power level to form an area illuminated at a second brightness level, the difference in brightness levels allows the lighting unit to indicate the status of the aerosol generation device or a consumable used with the aerosol generation device. For example, when illuminated at a first brightness level, the lighting unit indicates that the aerosol generation device is powered on and not ready for use by a user, and when illuminated at a second brightness level, the lighting indicates that the aerosol generation device is powered on and ready for use by a user.
[0065] In FIG. 4C , the total range of the illumination area 210 is the combined range of the area 210a illuminated at the first brightness level and the area 210b illuminated at the second brightness level. This configuration enables the lighting unit to display the status of the aerosol generation device or a consumable used with the aerosol generation device within or relative to a reference range of values, and the total range of the illumination area may correspond to the maximum range of possible values or the maximum reference value for the displayed status. The displayed status may be based on the relationship between the range of the area 210b illuminated at the second brightness level and the total range of the illumination area. For example, the total range of the illumination area may correspond to, for example, the range of charge levels of a battery provided as a power source in the aerosol generation device from 0% to 100%, or the total range of the illumination area may correspond to the range between the maximum amount of aerosol-generating substrate in the consumable and the fully depleted level of the aerosol-generating substrate. Thus, the relative range of the area 210b illuminated at the second brightness level compared to the total range of the illumination area may correspond to a relative range of values or to values within the maximum range of values. Thus, for example, if the area of area 210b is only 60% of the total area of illumination area 210, the displayed state may be the state when the battery is at a 60% charge level compared to the full charge level of the battery.
[0066] As shown in FIG. 4D , region 210b may include two regions 210b1 and 210b2, each representing the same or different pattern. The extent of pattern 210b1 and the extent of pattern 210b2 may be different from each other or independent of each other. In this configuration, patterns 210b1 and 210b2 may each represent a different state of the aerosol generation device or a consumable used with the aerosol generation device. For example, pattern 210b1 may represent the charge level of the battery of the aerosol generation device, in the manner described in connection with FIG. 4C , and pattern 210b2 may represent the aerosol generation substrate depletion level of a consumable used with the aerosol generation device.
[0067] Status that may be indicated by visual feedback include the elapsed and / or remaining activation time of the device, the total puffs taken by the user, the total puffs taken by the user relative to a predetermined maximum puff for the consumable, the total usage time of the consumable relative to a predetermined maximum usage time for the consumable, the usage time since activation of the device, the consumed and / or remaining amount of aerosol-generating substrate in the consumable, the operating temperature of the device, and the battery depletion level of the device, the battery charge state, etc.
[0068] Additionally, the pattern 210a / 210b of the illumination area 210 may be a dynamically changing or moving pattern. Furthermore, the direction of movement of the pattern may indicate a change in the state indicated by the pattern. For example, in the embodiment described in connection with FIG. 4C, the lighting unit may include a pattern indicating the battery depletion level. The pattern may repeatedly move upward, then reset to the original position of the pattern, and then move upward again, indicating not only the battery charge / depletion level, but also that the battery is being charged, i.e., the battery charge level is increasing.
[0069] Additionally or alternatively, any pattern in the illumination area 210 may change dynamically, for example, by periodically blinking, to indicate the status of the aerosol generation device. Additionally or alternatively, only one of the light sources may emit light, and adjacent light sources of the light sources following the direction of the illumination unit may begin emitting light when the previous light source stops emitting light after a predetermined time, forming a moving light source pattern to indicate the status of the aerosol generation device. Such conditions may include, for example, a low battery charge level, a low amount of aerosol-generating substrate remaining in a consumable product used with the aerosol generation device, or a malfunction of the aerosol generation device.
[0070] FIGS. 5A, 5B, 5C, and 5D illustrate an aerosol generating device 100, which may be the aerosol generating device described in connection with any one of FIGS. 1A to 3C. For example, the exterior wall 200 may consist essentially of a light-transmitting portion 300 or may include a light-transmitting portion 300 that is only a portion of the exterior wall. The aerosol generating device includes an illumination unit 210, which may be the illumination unit 210 described in connection with any one of FIGS. 1A to 4. Each of the illumination units 210 shown in FIGS. 5A to 5D includes multiple light sources arranged to form a continuous illumination area 210 when emitting light. The illumination area 210 may have different sizes and different shapes, such as a triangular shape, a bent and / or curved shape, or a circular / elliptical shape. In particular, as shown in FIG. 5D, the illumination area 210 may include a pattern whose appearance is shaped to represent the type of state displayed by the pattern. For example, the pattern may have a shape reminiscent of a battery to indicate that the visual feedback provided by the illumination area 210 displays the battery status of the aerosol generating device, such as the battery charge / depletion level.
