DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0009] These and other features, aspects, and advantages of the present disclosure will be better understood from the following detailed description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which like parts are designated with like numerals throughout.
[0010] One or more specific embodiments of the present disclosure will now be described. In order to describe these embodiments concisely, not all features of an actual implementation may be described herein. It should be understood that the development of any such actual implementation, as in any engineering or design project, requires numerous implementation-specific decisions to be made to achieve the developer's particular objectives, such as adhering to system-related and business-related constraints that may vary from implementation to implementation. Moreover, such a development effort may be complex and time-consuming, but should be understood to be a routine undertaking of design, fabrication and manufacture for those of ordinary skill in the art having the benefit of this disclosure.
[0011] Amusement parks feature a wide range of entertainment, such as amusement rides, performance shows, and games. Different types of entertainment can include features that enhance a guest's experience at the amusement park. In some examples, amusement rides, games, interactive equipment, and / or other features include surfaces (e.g., handles, knobs, seats, buttons, lap bars, seat belts) that are frequently encountered or touched by guests. Such surfaces can accumulate bacteria and / or other undesirable substances as guests come into contact with the surfaces and / or as the surfaces come into contact with air, water, mists, and / or spilled solids or liquids within the ride or feature's environment. Thus, amusement parks can have procedures in place to periodically disinfect surfaces to remove bacteria or other undesirable substances. For example, amusement parks can utilize a sanitization spray (e.g., soap or antibacterial liquid) to wipe down surfaces that may be exposed to bacteria and other undesirable substances during park downtime (e.g., when the park is closed). Additionally, amusement parks may otherwise shut down certain attractions to clean surfaces, thereby increasing wait times for amusement park guests.
[0012] The presently disclosed embodiments relate to an enhanced disinfection system for amusement rides that utilizes ultraviolet light to periodically remove bacteria and other undesirable materials from surfaces frequently contacted by guests. For example, the disinfection system can be located along the ride path between an unloading point where ride guests exit the ride vehicle and a loading point where new guests enter the ride vehicle. The disinfection system can be located along the ride path where guests are not present (or waiting to be available) in the ride vehicle based on normal operation. Thus, the disinfection system can be located such that guests do not block the ultraviolet light from reaching the target surfaces. It can also be ensured that guests entering and exiting the ride vehicle are not exposed to the ultraviolet light that will ultimately disinfect one or more surfaces of the ride vehicle. In some embodiments, the ultraviolet light source is located on an actuating arm or movable member that places the ultraviolet light source in close proximity to the surfaces to be cleaned. In other embodiments, the ultraviolet light source is located within the ride vehicle and is subsequently activated when the ride vehicle is located between the boarding area and the drop-off area (e.g., during travel from a position past the drop-off area to the boarding area) such that guests do not block the ultraviolet light from reaching the target surface. Although the embodiments described below generally relate to emitting ultraviolet light, it should be understood that features illustrated and described as emitting ultraviolet light can also be configured to emit sanitizing mists or sprays, such as a soap and water mixture or another cleaning solution, in addition to or instead of ultraviolet light.
[0013] In any event, the sanitization system is configured to kill bacteria and at least partially remove other undesirable materials from surfaces of the ride vehicles frequently contacted by guests, thereby increasing the frequency and efficiency of sanitization of amusement park rides, thereby enhancing the experience of guests visiting the amusement park.
[0014] Referring to the figures, FIG. 1 illustrates an embodiment of a sanitization system 10 for cleaning amusement park equipment, such as a ride vehicle 12. As shown in the exemplary embodiment of FIG. 1, the sanitization system 10 can include a sanitization station 14 located along a ride path 16 along which the ride vehicle 12 travels. As described above, the sanitization station 14 can include an ultraviolet light source 18 configured to emit ultraviolet light 20 toward the ride vehicle 12 to kill bacteria and other undesirable substances from surfaces of the ride vehicle 12 that are frequently contacted by guests (e.g., seats, handrails, interactive elements, handles, knobs, buttons). The ultraviolet light 20 contacts the surfaces of the ride vehicle 12 to eliminate bacteria and other undesirable substances (e.g., viruses) that may be present on the surfaces. In some embodiments, the sanitization station 14 is located between a guest drop-off area and a guest boarding area of the ride path 16 such that guests of the amusement park ride do not cover (e.g., block) any portion of the surfaces of the ride vehicle 12. In other embodiments, the sanitization station 14 may be located along a portion of the ride path 16 where the guest is within the ride vehicle 12 (e.g., between the boarding and disembarking areas relative to the direction of travel of the ride vehicle 12). As mentioned above, in some embodiments, the ultraviolet light source 18 may also be a sanitizing mist or spray source. For example, the sanitization station 14 may include one or more nozzles 21 configured to direct a cleaning solution, such as a soap and water mixture or water, toward the ride vehicle 12.
[0015] In some embodiments, the ride vehicle 12 is configured to travel along the ride path 16 and enter the sanitization station 14 to undergo a cleaning process periodically throughout the operation of the amusement ride utilizing the ride vehicle 12. Thus, sanitization of the ride vehicle 12 is systematically performed during the operation of the amusement ride (e.g., when guests are riding other ride vehicles of the amusement ride). In some examples, the speed of the ride vehicle 12 is slowed or reduced to substantially zero so that the ride vehicle 12 is exposed to the ultraviolet light source 18 for a sufficient time to effect cleaning of the ride vehicle 12. For example, the motion of the ride vehicle 12 may be stopped and / or otherwise reduced to ensure that the ride vehicle 12 is exposed to the ultraviolet light source 18 for a period of time, such as, for example, 1 second to 1 minute, 5 seconds to 45 seconds, or 10 seconds to 20 seconds. In other embodiments, the ultraviolet light source 18 may move with the ride vehicle 12. For example, the ultraviolet light source 18 may be attached to a movable feature (e.g., a mechanical arm, a conveyor belt) that moves with the ride vehicle 12 for a desired distance or time.
[0016] In either case, the ultraviolet light source 18 emits ultraviolet light 20 that disinfects the surfaces of the vehicle 12. In some embodiments, the ultraviolet light 20 can include a predetermined wavelength suitable for killing common germs and / or other undesirable materials present on the surfaces of the vehicle 12. The wavelength of the ultraviolet light can be between 122 and 200 nanometers, thereby emitting far ultraviolet ("FUV") radiation that cleans the surfaces of the vehicle 12. In other embodiments, the ultraviolet light 20 can include any suitable wavelength (e.g., between 10 and 400 nanometers).
[0017] Additionally or alternatively, the ride vehicle 12 may also include an on-board sanitization component 22 that also emits ultraviolet light 20 at predetermined locations along the ride path 16. For example, the sanitization component 22 may be configured to operate at a particular location where amusement ride guests are no longer present within the ride vehicle 12 (e.g., between a drop-off area of the ride path 16 and a boarding area of the ride path 16). Thus, the amusement ride guests are not blocking or covering any of the surfaces of the ride vehicle 12 that are to be cleaned by the sanitization component 22. In other embodiments, the sanitization component 22 may operate along a portion of the ride path 16 where guests are present within the ride vehicle 12 (e.g., between a boarding area and a drop-off area relative to the direction of travel of the ride vehicle 12). As described in detail herein with respect to FIG. 6, the sanitization component 22 may include a movable member that extends from and retracts into a compartment of the ride vehicle 12 to position the ultraviolet light source 18 in proximity to the surfaces to be cleaned. The movable member can be configured to rotate and / or otherwise adjust the position of the ultraviolet light source 18 to expose all surfaces of the ride vehicle 12 that are commonly contacted by guests to the ultraviolet light 20. In other embodiments, the sanitization element 22 can include an ultraviolet light source 18 that is fixedly attached to the ride vehicle 12 such that the ultraviolet light source 18 does not move relative to the ride vehicle 12. The ultraviolet light source 18 can be positioned within the ride vehicle 12 to direct the ultraviolet light toward surfaces of the ride vehicle 12 that are frequently contacted by guests.
[0018] Additionally, the sanitization station 14 may include a dryer or heater 24 that may be utilized to remove accumulated droplets of the cleaning fluid 26 dispensed from the nozzles 21 from the surfaces of the ride vehicle 12. In some embodiments, the sanitization station 14 may include multiple nozzles 21, each configured to direct the cleaning fluid 26 onto the surfaces of the ride vehicle 12. For example, a first nozzle 21 may direct a mixture of soap and water onto the ride vehicle 12. Additionally, a second nozzle 21 positioned past the first nozzle 21 relative to the direction of travel of the ride vehicle 12 along the ride path 16 may direct water onto the ride vehicle 12 to remove any soap and water mixture that may have accumulated on the ride vehicle 12. In some embodiments, the rate at which the cleaning fluid 26 is directed from the nozzles 21 onto the ride vehicle 12 may vary as the ride vehicle 12 progresses through the sanitization station 14. For example, the first nozzle 21 may direct cleaning fluid 26 toward the vehicle 12 at a higher flow rate than the second nozzle 21, or may direct cleaning fluid 26 toward the vehicle 12 at a lower flow rate than the second nozzle 21, or the flow rate of cleaning fluid 26 from the first nozzle 21 and the flow rate of cleaning fluid 26 from the second nozzle 21 may be substantially the same.
[0019] In any event, a dryer or heater 24 may be utilized to direct air or warm air at the ride vehicle 12 to remove any residual liquid particles from the soap and water mixture and / or water so that the ride vehicle 12 exits the sanitizing station 14 substantially dry. In addition to or instead of the ultraviolet light 20, a cleaning fluid 26 directed from one or more nozzles 21 may also be utilized. In some embodiments, the ultraviolet light source 18 is activated to emit ultraviolet light 20 toward the ride vehicle 12 while the cleaning fluid 26 is not directed toward the ride vehicle 12. In other embodiments, the ultraviolet light source 18 is deactivated while the cleaning fluid 26 is sprayed or otherwise emitted from the nozzles 21. In further embodiments, both the ultraviolet light 20 and the cleaning fluid 26 are directed toward the surface of the ride vehicle 12.
[0020] As mentioned above, the disinfection system 10 is positioned along a portion of the ride path 16 where there are no guests in the ride vehicle 12 anymore. In some examples, the disinfection system 10 is positioned within the view of the guests (e.g., guests waiting to experience an amusement ride in the boarding area), but the actual disinfection process can be at least substantially obscured from view to the guests, thereby eliminating any inconsistency with the associated ride theme. For example, FIG. 2 shows an embodiment of the disinfection system 10 having an access door 50 for blocking the ultraviolet light 20 from the guests. The access door 50 is configured to open (e.g., via an actuator) to allow the ride vehicle 12 to move into a housing 52 of the disinfection system 10. Upon entering the housing 52, the access door 50 closes (e.g., via an actuator) such that the ride vehicle 12 is covered by (e.g., enclosed within) the housing 52. Thus, transmission of the ultraviolet light 20 is substantially prevented from exiting the housing 52. This can facilitate directing the ultraviolet light 20 to more areas of the ride vehicle 12. For example, the interior of the access door 50 may be mirrored (along with other sides of the interior of the housing 52 ) to redirect the ultraviolet light 20 towards the ride vehicle 12 .
[0021] In some embodiments, the speed of movement of the ride vehicle 12 is reduced and / or stopped so that the ride vehicle 12 is adequately exposed to the ultraviolet radiation 20. Additionally or alternatively, the speed of movement of the ride vehicle 12 is based on the length 54 of the housing 52. For example, when the length 54 of the housing 52 is relatively short, the speed of movement of the ride vehicle 12 is reduced. In some embodiments, the speed of movement of the ride vehicle 12 is completely stopped for a period of time so that the surface of the ride vehicle 12 is adequately exposed to the ultraviolet radiation 20. In such embodiments, the length 54 of the housing 52 can be substantially similar to the length 56 of the ride vehicle 12 (e.g., the housing 52 can be sized to accommodate a single ride vehicle 12). In other embodiments, the speed of movement of the ride vehicle 12 is maintained or increased when the length 54 of the housing 52 is relatively long. Additionally or alternatively, the housing 52 can be sized to accommodate multiple ride vehicles 12. Further, in some embodiments, the ultraviolet radiation source 18 can move within the housing 52 or otherwise along the ride path 16 with the ride vehicle 12.
[0022] In any case, a second access door 58 is disposed at an end 60 of the housing 52 opposite the end 62 having the access door 50. The second access door 58 thus opens to allow the ride vehicle 12 to exit the housing 52 after being exposed to the ultraviolet light 20 and continue along the ride path 16 (e.g., toward the boarding area). Thus, the ride vehicle 12 may simultaneously and / or periodically move along the ride path 16 and perform cleaning as the amusement ride continues to operate. In some embodiments, the access door 50 and the second access door 58 open and close substantially simultaneously based on commands from a controller. In other embodiments, the opening and closing of the access door 50 and the second access door 58 may be offset as commanded by the controller (e.g., the access door 50 may be opened and closed to admit the ride vehicle 12, followed by the second access door 58 to exit the ride vehicle 12, etc.). In either case, the timing of activation of the access doors 50 and 58 may depend on a predetermined exposure time of the ride vehicle 12 or a predetermined length of travel of the ride vehicle 12. In some embodiments, both doors 50 and 58 are held closed by the controller while the sterilization process is active, and are then opened by the controller once the sterilization process is complete. Like the first access door 50, the second access door 58 may have a reflective interior to facilitate redirecting the ultraviolet light 20 towards the ride vehicle 12.
[0023] FIG. 3 illustrates an embodiment of the sterilization system 10 with the access door 50 in an open position 80. As shown in the exemplary embodiment of FIG. 3, the housing 52 includes one or more ultraviolet light sources 82 disposed on an interior wall 84 of the housing 52. The ultraviolet light sources 82 thus direct ultraviolet light 20 toward the ride vehicle 12 when the ride vehicle is disposed within the housing 52. In some embodiments, the ultraviolet light sources 82 are disposed within the housing 52 at various angles, distances, and positions relative to the interior wall 84 of the housing 52. Additionally, the location of the ultraviolet light sources 82 may also be dependent on the configuration (e.g., size, shape, components) of the ride vehicle 12. That is, in some embodiments, the positioning of the ultraviolet light sources 82 correlates or corresponds to the shape of the ride vehicle 12. For example, a ride vehicle shaped as a cart may have a different location of the ultraviolet light sources 82 compared to a ride vehicle shaped as a car. In any case, the ultraviolet light 20 is configured to reach surfaces of the ride vehicle 12 that are frequently in contact with guests (e.g., seats, handles, knobs, buttons) to remove and / or kill bacteria and other undesirable materials from the surfaces.
[0024] As discussed above, the sanitizing station 14 may include one or more nozzles 21 that direct a cleaning fluid, such as a soap and water mixture or water, onto the surfaces of the ride vehicle 12. The sanitizing station 14 may also include a dryer or heater 24 configured to remove residual cleaning fluid from the surfaces of the ride vehicle 12 before or as the ride vehicle 12 exits the sanitizing station 14. As shown in the exemplary embodiment of FIG. 3, the nozzles 21 may receive the cleaning fluid from a storage tank 86. The cleaning fluid 26 may be directed to the nozzles 21 from the storage tank 86 via a pump 88. In some embodiments, each nozzle 21 receives the cleaning fluid 26 from the storage tank 86 via the pump 88. In other embodiments, each nozzle 21 may include a corresponding storage tank and pump.
[0025] Additionally, the cleaning solution 26 may accumulate on the surface 90 of the sanitization station 14. Accordingly, the surface 90 of the sanitization station 14 may include a drain 92 that receives any cleaning solution 26 that has accumulated on the surface 90 and directs it away from the sanitization station. In some embodiments, the drain 92 may direct the cleaning solution 26 to a waste tank 94. The waste tank 94 may be positioned relative to the drain 92 such that the cleaning solution 26 flows from the drain 92 to the waste tank 94 via gravity. In other embodiments, the drain 92 redirects the cleaning solution 26 to the storage tank 86 such that the cleaning solution 26 may be recycled and utilized multiple times within the sanitization station 14. The cleaning solution 26 may be returned from the drain 92 to the storage tank 86 by a pump 96. Additionally, a filter 98 may be positioned between the drain 92 and the storage tank 86 to remove particles and / or undesirable material from the cleaning solution 26 before it reaches the storage tank 86.
[0026] As shown in the exemplary embodiment of FIG. 4, the housing 52 can include one or more movable members 100 configured to adjust the position of the ultraviolet light source 82 relative to the inner wall 84 of the housing 52. For example, as shown in FIG. 4, the housing 52 can have two movable members 100. Each movable member 100 includes a corresponding ultraviolet light source 101 (e.g., an adjustable ultraviolet light source). Additionally or alternatively, the movable member 100 can include one of the nozzles 21 that direct the cleaning fluid 26 toward the ride vehicle 12. In some embodiments, the movable member 100 includes a telescopic arm 102 configured to extend and retract relative to the ride vehicle 12. Similarly, the movable member 100 can include a first joint 104 that allows a first telescopic arm 106 to rotate about a first axis 108 relative to the inner wall 84 of the housing. Additionally or alternatively, the movable member 100 may also include a second joint 109 coupling the first telescoping arm 106 to the second telescoping arm 110 such that the second telescoping arm 109 can rotate about a second axis 111 relative to the first telescoping arm 106 and / or the interior wall 84. The movable member 100 may articulate, rotate, extend, retract, ratchet, bend, spin, or perform other movements in accordance with the present embodiment to facilitate emission of ultraviolet light 20 onto a surface of the ride vehicle 12.
[0027] As shown in the exemplary embodiment of FIG. 4, the sterilization system 10 includes a control system 112 coupled to a sensor 113. The control system 112 is also coupled to one or more moveable members 100 having corresponding ultraviolet light sources 101 and one or more fixed ultraviolet light sources 114. Additionally, in some embodiments, the control system 112 is also coupled to the access door 50 and / or the second access door 58. Thus, the control system 112 receives feedback from the sensor 113 indicative of the position of the ride vehicle 12. When the ride vehicle 12 is located a predetermined distance from the sterilization station 14 (e.g., the housing 52), the control system 112 opens the access door 50 and / or activates the ultraviolet light source 101 and / or the one or more fixed ultraviolet light sources 114. The control system 112 can be configured to activate the access door 50 to the open position 80 when the ride vehicle 12 is in proximity to the housing 52 (e.g., within 2 yards, within 5 yards, within 10 yards of the end 62 of the housing 52).
[0028] In some embodiments, the sensor 113 may provide feedback to the control system 112 indicating that the ride vehicle 12 is fully positioned within the housing 52. The control system 112 may then actuate the access door 50 to close the access door 50 prior to actuating the ultraviolet light source 101 and / or the fixed ultraviolet light source 114. Thus, the ride vehicle 12 is enclosed within the housing 52 (e.g., the access doors 50 and 58 are closed, respectively) prior to the ultraviolet light 20 being emitted from the ultraviolet light source 101 and / or the fixed ultraviolet light source 114. Thus, the ultraviolet light 20 is prevented from exiting the housing 52 (e.g., via the access doors 50 and 58), thereby preventing guests proximate to the ride path 16 from observing the ultraviolet light 20. Once the control system 112 determines that the ride vehicle is enclosed within the housing 52, it may actuate the ultraviolet light source 101 and / or the one or more fixed ultraviolet light sources 114 once the access door 50 reaches the closed position. The control system 112 can further open the second access door 58 after the ultraviolet light source 101 and / or the one or more fixed ultraviolet light sources 114 are shut off after a predetermined time (e.g., a predetermined exposure time). Additionally, the control system 112 can actuate the second access door 58 to a closed position upon detecting that the ride vehicle 12 is completely outside of the housing 52 (e.g., a predetermined distance from the end 60 of the housing 52).
[0029] In some examples, the movable members 100 are adjusted to expose multiple surfaces of the ride vehicle 12 that are frequently in contact with the guests to the ultraviolet light 20. For example, the control system 112 can include a processor 116 that executes instructions (pre-programmed routines) stored in a memory 118. In some embodiments, the memory 118 includes instructions for a predetermined sequence of movement of the movable members 100 based on the configuration (e.g., size, shape) of the ride vehicle 12 and the location of the surfaces (e.g., handles, handrails, knobs, buttons, seats) of the ride vehicle 12 that are most frequently in contact with the guests. In one embodiment, the shape of the ride vehicle 12 can be mapped (e.g., via a camera) and used to guide the movable members 100. This mapping can be done as part of the disinfection process and can accommodate vehicles of different shapes. However, the mapping only needs to be done once for a set of similarly shaped ride vehicles 12. In other embodiments, the sequence is configured to adjust the position of the movable members 100 to expose substantially all surfaces of the ride vehicle 12 that may be in contact with the guests. In any case, ultraviolet light 20 is directed toward the ride vehicle 12 to remove bacteria and other undesirable matter from the surfaces of the ride vehicle 12 between the boarding area of the ride path 16 and the disembarking area of the ride path 16 .
[0030] Although the embodiment of the sanitization system 10 described with reference to Figures 2-4 includes access doors 50 and 58 surrounding the housing 52 of the sanitization station 14, other embodiments may not include the access door 58. For example, Figure 5 is a schematic diagram of an embodiment of a sanitization station 14 disposed in a portion of a ride path 16 that is blocked from a guest's perspective. For example, the ride path 16 includes a drop-off area 140 for guests to exit the ride vehicle 12 and experience other attractions of the amusement park. The ride path 16 also includes a boarding area 142 for guests to enter the ride vehicle 12 and experience an amusement ride associated with the ride vehicle 12. As shown in the exemplary embodiment of Figure 5, a barrier 144 (e.g., a wall, tunnel, room, compartment) is disposed between the drop-off area 140 and the boarding area 142 of the ride path 16. The barrier 144 is configured to allow guests to experience the amusement ride without seeing the sanitization station 14, which may disrupt the continuity of the thematic experience.
[0031] 5 does not include access doors 50 and 58 because the barrier 144 blocks the ultraviolet light 20 from reaching the guest. The continuous extension of the ultraviolet light source 101 and / or the fixed ultraviolet light source 114 may enhance the exposure of the ride vehicle 12 to the ultraviolet light 20 as the ride vehicle 12 travels along the ride path 16. In other words, the ride vehicle 12 may be exposed to the ultraviolet light 20 immediately upon entering the housing 52 without waiting for the ultraviolet light source 101 and / or the fixed ultraviolet light source 114 to be activated upon closure of the access doors 50 and / or 58.
[0032] Additionally, the housing 52 of the sterilization station 14 of FIG. 5 may not completely surround the ride vehicle 12. For example, the housing 52 may include a plurality of beams and / or other structural support members that are spaced apart from one another such that the ride vehicle 12 is not completely enclosed or surrounded by walls. However, the ultraviolet light source 101 and / or the fixed ultraviolet light source 114 may be attached to beams and / or other structural support members of the housing 52 in a manner similar to that of the interior wall 84 (e.g., FIG. 4).
[0033] 6 illustrates an embodiment of a ride vehicle 12 including an ultraviolet light source 160 that can be disposed within a compartment 162 of the ride vehicle 12 during the duration of the ride and actuated toward one or more surfaces 163 of the ride vehicle 12 between the drop-off area 140 and the boarding area 142 of the ride path 16. For example, a movable member 166 that can be disposed within the compartment 162 and configured to direct the ultraviolet light source 160 toward one or more surfaces 163 of the ride vehicle including areas that are otherwise difficult to illuminate (e.g., areas surrounding the floorboard of the ride vehicle 12) can be actuated by a control system 164 disposed on the ride vehicle 12 (and / or by control system 112 via wireless communication). The movable member 166 can be actuated upon detection of the position of the ride vehicle 12 between the drop-off area 140 and the boarding area 142 via, for example, a sensor 113.
[0034] 6, the movable member 166 includes a telescoping rod 170 configured to extend outward from the compartment 162 and retract inward toward the compartment 162. In other embodiments, the movable member 166 may include other suitable folding, rotating, extending, flexible, articulating, ratcheting, or otherwise moving arms or members configured to direct the ultraviolet light source 160 toward the surface 163 when the ride vehicle 12 is located between the drop-off area 140 and the boarding area 142, and to return the ultraviolet light source 160 into the compartment 162 once the ride vehicle 12 reaches the boarding area 142 (and, for example, when the ride vehicle 12 is between the boarding area 142 and the drop-off area 140).
[0035] In other embodiments, the ultraviolet light source 160 may not be located within the compartment 162. Thus, the guest may be able to see the ultraviolet light source 160 for the duration of the ride. In some embodiments, the ultraviolet light source 160 may be disguised as a feature on the ride vehicle 12 related to the particular theme of the ride. As a non-limiting example, the ultraviolet light source 160 may be disguised as a button or mirror located within the ride vehicle 12. In such an embodiment, the ultraviolet light source 160 remains inactive until the position of the ride vehicle 12 is determined to be between the drop-off area 140 and the boarding area 142 of the ride path 16. Thus, the guest does not block the exposure of the surface 163 of the ride vehicle 12 to the ultraviolet light 20.
[0036] 7 is a perspective view of an embodiment of a compartment 172 that may be located within the ride vehicle 12. As used herein, the compartment 172 may include a cutout in a wall 174 that includes a handle 176 for the ride vehicle 12. The handle 176 may be utilized by a guest to open a door of the ride vehicle 12 and / or as a support feature for a guest to grasp as the ride vehicle 12 moves along the ride path 16. As shown in the exemplary embodiment of FIG. 7, the compartment 172 may include an ultraviolet light source 178 on one or more surfaces 180. Additionally or alternatively, the surfaces 180 may include one or more nozzles 21 configured to direct cleaning fluid 26 toward the handle 176.
[0037] Ultraviolet light 20 emitted from ultraviolet light source 178 and / or cleaning fluid 26 (e.g., water, soap, a mixture of water and soap, foam, or another suitable cleanser) from nozzles 21 may be utilized to sanitize one or more surfaces 180 of handle 176 and / or compartment 172. One or more surfaces 180 of handle 176 and / or compartment 172 that are frequently in contact with amusement ride guests and may result in the transmission of germs, bacteria, or undesirable substances may be removed by ultraviolet light 20 and / or cleaning fluid 26.
[0038] In some embodiments, the ultraviolet light source 178 and / or nozzle 21 may be substantially flush with the surface 180 of the compartment 172 such that the ultraviolet light source 178 and / or nozzle 21 are at least partially blocked from the guest's point of view. In other embodiments, the ultraviolet light source 178 and / or nozzle 21 are recessed relative to the surface 180. In either case, the ultraviolet light source 178 and / or nozzle 21 may be substantially fixed relative to the compartment 172 and configured to direct the ultraviolet light 20 and / or cleaning liquid 26 toward the handle 176 and / or surface 180 of the compartment 172. The ultraviolet light 20 and / or cleaning liquid 26 may be directed toward the handle 176 and / or surface 180 as the ride vehicle 12 moves along the ride path 16 (e.g., relative to the direction of travel of the ride vehicle 12) from the drop-off area to the boarding area. In other embodiments, the ultraviolet light 20 and / or cleaning fluid 26 are directed toward the handle 176 and / or surface 180 when the guest is located within the ride vehicle 12 (e.g., between the boarding and disembarking areas relative to the direction of travel of the ride vehicle 12 along the ride path 16). Thus, the ultraviolet light 20 and / or cleaning fluid 26 may be related to an amusement ride theme such that a guest within the ride vehicle 12 can observe or otherwise experience the ultraviolet light 20 and / or cleaning fluid 26 and associate the ultraviolet light 26 and / or cleaning fluid 26 with their experience of the amusement ride.
[0039] In yet another embodiment, the ultraviolet light source 160 can be disposed on a movable member 190 secured to a portable base 192 configured to move with the ride vehicle 12 along the ride path 16. For example, FIG. 8 is a perspective view of an embodiment of a movable member 190 secured to a portable base 192. As shown in the exemplary embodiment of FIG. 8, the movable member 190 includes a first telescopic arm 194 coupled to a second telescopic arm 196 via a joint 198. The first telescopic arm 194 is configured to adjust the height of the ultraviolet light source 160 relative to a surface 200 of the ride path 16. Additionally, the second telescopic arm 196 is configured to adjust the position of the ultraviolet light source 160 relative to the surface of the ride vehicle 12. In some embodiments, the joint 198 allows for rotation of the second telescopic arm 196 about an axis 202 relative to the first telescopic arm 194 such that the second telescopic arm 196 can further adjust the position of the ultraviolet light source 160 relative to the surface of the ride vehicle 12.
[0040] In some embodiments, the portable base 192 is configured to move along a track 204 disposed adjacent to the ride path 16 of the ride vehicle 12. The portable base 192 thus allows the moveable member 190, and thus the ultraviolet light source 160, to move with the ride vehicle 12. The track 204 may include various components that cause movement of the portable base 192, such as belts, magnets, rollers, or other suitable components. In other embodiments, the portable base 192 includes a motor 206 that causes movement of the portable base 192 along the track 204.
[0041] The portable base 192 may be configured to move along the track 204 with the ride vehicle 12. In some embodiments, a sensor 208 (e.g., a proximity sensor or other suitable position sensor) is utilized to detect the position of the ride vehicle 12 along the ride path 16. As shown in the illustrated embodiment, the sensor 208 is included on the portable base 192. In other embodiments, the sensor 208 is located adjacent the ride path 16 and / or in other locations suitable for detecting the ride vehicle 12. In any case, the movement of the portable base 192 along the track 204 may be initiated or otherwise adjusted based on feedback from the sensor 208 indicative of the position of the ride vehicle 12 along the ride path 12. For example, in some embodiments, the portable base 192 is substantially stationary until the sensor 208 detects that the ride vehicle 12 has reached a predetermined position along the ride path 16. The sensor 208 may be communicatively coupled to the control system 210 and / or the motor 206 of the movable member 190. Thus, feedback from the sensors 208 is utilized to guide the movement of the portable base 192 along the track 204. Additionally, the sensors 208 may continuously monitor the position of the ride vehicle 12 as the portable base 192 moves along the track 204. Thus, the control system 210 may be configured to substantially match the speed of the portable base 192 to the speed of the ride vehicle 12 (e.g., within 10%, within 5%, or within 1% of the speed of the ride vehicle 12).
[0042] Additionally or alternatively, the control system 210 may be configured to adjust the speed of the portable base 192 and / or the distance that the portable base 192 travels along the ride path 16 (e.g., via the track 204) based on the desired amount of cleaning for a given ride vehicle 12. For example, in some embodiments, the ride vehicle 12 may contain a relatively large amount of undesirable material (e.g., detected by a camera, sensor, or operator) that is to be removed by the ultraviolet light source 160 (or cleaning fluid 26). In this case, the speed and / or distance traveled by the portable base 192 may be adjusted (e.g., via the control system 210 and / or an operator) so that the ride vehicle 12 is exposed to the ultraviolet light source 20 and / or cleaning fluid 26 for a period of time appropriate to remove the undesirable material. This adjustment may be automatic (e.g., pre-programmed) or operator controlled.
[0043] In some embodiments, the track 204 can be positioned between the drop-off area 140 and the boarding area 142 relative to the direction of travel of the ride vehicle 12 along the ride path 16. Thus, when the ultraviolet light source 160 is activated to direct ultraviolet light at the surface of the ride vehicle 12, no guests are present within the ride vehicle 12 to prevent the ultraviolet light from reaching the surface of the ride vehicle 12. Furthermore, the track 204 can be substantially circular such that once the portable base 192 reaches the boarding area 142 of the ride path 16, it reverses back towards the drop-off area 140. Thus, the track 204 forms a circuit that allows the portable base 192 to expose the surface of the subsequent ride vehicle 12 that has reached the drop-off area 140 of the ride path 16.
[0044] 9 is a perspective view of an embodiment of a sanitization station 14 that may include a movable structure 210 configured to move with the ride vehicle 12 along at least a portion of the ride path 16. As shown in the exemplary embodiment of FIG. 9, the movable structure 210 includes a first support 212, a second support 214, and a cross post 216 that couples the first support 212 to the second support 214. The first support 212, the second support 214, and the cross post 216 may each include a plurality of ultraviolet light sources 218 configured to transmit ultraviolet light 20 toward the ride vehicle 12. Additionally or alternatively, the first support 212, the second support 214, and / or the cross post 216 may also include one or more nozzles 21 configured to direct a cleaning solution 26 (e.g., water, a soap and water mixture, cleaning foam, wax, or other suitable substance) toward the ride vehicle 12.
[0045] In any event, the movable structure 210 may be configured to move along a pair of tracks 220 with a first track 222 disposed on a first side 224 of the vehicle path 16 and a second track 226 disposed on a second side 228 of the vehicle path 16. As such, the first and second posts 212 and 214 may include various components that cause movement of the first and second posts 212 and 214 along the pair of tracks 220, such as belts, magnets, rollers, wheels, or other suitable components.
[0046] In some embodiments, the first strut 212 and / or the second strut 214 can be configured to rotate about the first axis 230 and the second axis 232, respectively. Thus, the movable structure 210 can increase the amount of the surface of the ride vehicle 12 exposed to the ultraviolet light 20. In other words, as the first strut 212 and / or the second strut 214 rotate about the first axis 230 and / or the second axis 232, respectively, the angle at which the ultraviolet light 20 is directed at the ride vehicle 12 is adjusted, thereby exposing additional surfaces of the ride vehicle 12 to the ultraviolet light 20. Additionally or alternatively, the first strut 212, the second strut 214 and / or the cross strut 216 can include a bar 234 configured to move away from the first strut 212 and the second strut 214 and toward the ride vehicle 12. Thus, the positions of the multiple ultraviolet light sources 218 can be adjusted so that the multiple ultraviolet light sources 218 are closer to a surface of the ride vehicle 12. Additionally, the bar 234 can be configured to rotate about the first axis 230 and / or the second axis 232 to adjust the angle at which the ultraviolet light 20 is directed toward the ride vehicle 12, thereby increasing the amount of the surface of the ride vehicle 12 that is exposed to the ultraviolet light 20.
[0047] The movable structure 210 may also be configured to move along the pair of tracks 220 with the ride vehicles 12. In some embodiments, a sensor 236 (e.g., a proximity sensor or other suitable position sensor) is utilized to detect the position of the ride vehicles 12 along the ride path 16. As shown in the illustrated embodiment, the sensor 236 is included on the movable structure 210. In other embodiments, the sensor 236 is located adjacent to the ride path 16 and / or at other locations suitable for detecting the ride vehicles 12. In any case, the movement of the movable structure 210 along the pair of tracks 220 may be initiated or otherwise adjusted based on feedback from the sensor 236 indicative of the position of the ride vehicles 12 along the ride path 12. For example, in some embodiments, the movable structure 210 is substantially stationary until the sensor 236 detects that the ride vehicles 12 have reached a predetermined position along the ride path 16. The sensor 236 may be communicatively coupled to a control system 238 of the movable structure 210. Thus, feedback from the sensor 236 is utilized to guide the movement of the movable structure 210 along the pair of tracks 220. Additionally, the sensors 236 can continuously monitor the position of the ride vehicle 12 as the moveable structure 210 moves along the pair of tracks 220. Accordingly, the control system 238 can be configured to substantially match the speed of the moveable structure 210 to the speed of the ride vehicle 12 (e.g., within 10%, within 5%, or within 1% of the speed of the ride vehicle 12).
[0048] Additionally or alternatively, the control system 238 may be configured to adjust the speed of the movable structure 210 and / or the distance that the movable structure 210 travels along the ride path 16 (e.g., via the pair of tracks 220) based on the desired amount of cleaning for a given ride vehicle 12. For example, in some embodiments, the ride vehicle 12 may contain a relatively large amount of undesirable material (e.g., detected by a camera, sensor, or operator) to be removed by the multiple ultraviolet light sources 218 (or nozzles 21). In this case, the speed and / or distance traveled by the movable structure 210 may be adjusted (e.g., via the control system 238 and / or an operator) so that the ride vehicle 12 is exposed to the ultraviolet light 20 and / or cleaning solution 26 for a period of time appropriate to remove the undesirable material. This adjustment may be automatic (e.g., pre-programmed) or operator controlled.
[0049] 10 is an elevational view of the ride vehicle 12 and the movable structure 210. As shown in the exemplary embodiment of FIG. 10, each of the first strut 212, the second strut 214, and the cross strut 216 includes a corresponding bar 234. The bar 234 may be coupled to the first strut 212, the second strut 214, and / or the cross strut 216 via a telescoping mount 240. The telescoping mount 240 may allow movement of the bar 234 toward and away from the first strut 212, the second strut 214, and the cross strut 216. Additionally or alternatively, the telescoping mount 240 may allow rotation of the bar 234 about the first axis 230, the second axis 232, and / or the third axis 242. Thus, the movable structure 210 can allow the ultraviolet light 20 and / or cleaning liquid 26 to be directed toward the surface of the ride vehicle 12 at multiple angles and / or multiple distances from the surface of the ride vehicle 12.
[0050] In some embodiments, the movable structure 210 is configured to move along the ride path 16 with the ride vehicle 12 between the drop-off area 140 and the boarding area 142 relative to the direction of travel of the ride vehicle 12 along the ride path 16. In other embodiments, the movable structure 210 can move along the ride path 16 at another suitable location. The sanitization station 14 can include multiple movable structures 210 positioned along the ride path 16 to allow for simultaneous cleaning of multiple ride vehicles 12. Additionally, each of the multiple movable structures 210 can be configured to move along a predetermined portion of the ride path 16 to direct the ultraviolet light 20 and / or cleaning solution 26 to the ride vehicle 12 currently residing within the predetermined portion. In other embodiments, each of the multiple movable structures 210 can be configured to move along a circular circuit similar to the track 204 described above with respect to FIG. 8.
[0051] 11 is a block diagram of an operational process 260 of the sterilization system 10. For example, in block 262, the control system 112 can receive feedback from a sensor 113 (or another suitable sensor) indicating the position of the ride vehicle 12 along the ride path 16 and / or a sensor (e.g., a camera) that provides information regarding whether something in the vehicle (e.g., an item remaining in the ride vehicle) is preventing exposure. In some embodiments, the control system 112 can be configured to receive feedback from multiple sensors located at various locations along the ride path 16 such that the control system 112 detects the position of the ride vehicle 12 as it moves along the entire ride path 16. In other embodiments, the control system 112 can detect the position of the ride vehicle 12 when it is within a predetermined distance of the sterilization station 14, when it is between the drop-off area 140 and the pick-up area 142, or both. In some embodiments, sensors can also detect if something within the ride vehicle 12 (e.g., debris left within the vehicle) becomes blocking the ultraviolet light 20 from reaching a particular surface, which the control system 112 can use to control the sterilization system 10.
[0052] Further, in block 264, the control system 112 is configured to activate the ultraviolet light source 101, the fixed ultraviolet light source 114, the ultraviolet light source 160, and / or the plurality of ultraviolet light sources 218 to direct ultraviolet light 20 toward surfaces of the ride vehicle 12 upon detecting that the ride vehicle 12 is at least between the drop-off area 140 and the boarding area 142. Additionally, the control system 112 may delay activation of the ultraviolet light source 101, the fixed ultraviolet light source 114, the ultraviolet light source 160, and / or the plurality of ultraviolet light sources 218 until the control system 112 receives feedback indicating that the ride vehicle 12 is within a predetermined distance of the sanitization station 14, other location information, and / or whether anything has been identified within the ride vehicle 12.
[0053] Also, in some embodiments, the control system 112 can be configured to activate the access door 50 of the housing 52 of the sanitization station 14 upon detecting that the ride vehicle 12 is within a predetermined distance from the housing 52. For example, the predetermined distance for activating the access door 50 can be greater than the predetermined distance for activating the ultraviolet light source 101 and / or the fixed ultraviolet light source 114. The control system 112 can also be configured to adjust the position of the ultraviolet light source 101 and / or the plurality of ultraviolet light sources 218 relative to a surface of the ride vehicle 12 using the movable member 100 mounted within the housing 52 of the sanitization station 14 and / or the bar 234 mounted to the movable structure 210 of the sanitization station 14. For example, the movable member 100 can be mounted to the inner wall 84 of the housing 52 such that the movable member 100 adjusts the position of the ultraviolet light source 101 relative to the inner wall 84. Thus, the ultraviolet light source 101 can direct ultraviolet light 20 toward one or more surfaces of the ride vehicle 12.
[0054] Additionally or alternatively, the control system 112 may be configured to activate the ultraviolet light source 160 and / or 178 located within the ride vehicle 12. As described above, the ultraviolet light source 160 may be located within the compartment 162 and / or 172 of the ride vehicle 12 when the ride vehicle 12 is located between the boarding area 142 and the drop-off area 140. When the control system 112 determines that the ride vehicle 12 is located between the drop-off area 140 and the boarding area 142 (e.g., in a portion of the ride path 16 where no guests are present on the ride vehicle 12), the control system 112 may activate the movable member 166 to move the ultraviolet light source 160 out of the compartment 162 such that the ultraviolet light source 160 can direct ultraviolet light 20 toward the surface of the ride vehicle.
