Description

Electronic device including a side antenna structure

[0001] Various embodiments disclosed in this document relate to electronic devices including side antenna structures.

[0002] Design trends in electronic devices are increasing the demand for electronic devices with metal exteriors.

[0003] For electronic devices with metallic side members, placing antennas within the side members can be limiting. To overcome this limitation, methods are being implemented to utilize at least a portion of the metallic side members as antenna radiators, thereby ensuring antenna performance.

[0004] Meanwhile, with the launch of 5G services, additional service bands may be added. This means electronic devices will contain more antenna radiators than before.

[0005] The above information may be provided as background art to aid in understanding the present disclosure. No claim or determination is made as to whether any of the above is applicable as prior art related to the present disclosure.

[0006] An electronic device may be equipped with an antenna for transmitting or receiving signals to or from an external electronic device. The electronic device may utilize a side member surrounding a side of a housing as an antenna. In this case, the side member may be electrically connected to a communication module disposed on a printed circuit board. In one embodiment, the side member may be connected to the housing in which the printed circuit board is disposed, electrically connected to the communication module, and electrically connected to the ground of the printed circuit board.

[0007] Meanwhile, the length of the side member may be determined in consideration of the antenna frequency band. The side member may have an antenna length that can communicate in a given frequency band. The antenna length may be determined by the location of the part where the communication signal is fed (the feeding part) and the part where the communication signal exits (the ground point, ground). In one embodiment, the ground point of the side member may be a part that comes into contact with the housing connected to the ground. In this case, since the side member is physically connected to the housing, a current exceeding the current required for antenna operation may flow in. Therefore, the antenna radiation performance through the side member may be degraded.

[0008] Additionally, an oxide film may be formed on the outer surface of the side member to prevent corrosion of the side member and enhance durability. If the oxide film becomes scratched during use of the electronic device, and moisture enters the scratched area, causing current to leak from the housing to the side member, hydrogen gas may be generated in the space between the side member and the oxide film, causing the oxide film layer to peel off from the side member.

[0009] According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, a structure can be provided that blocks or reduces leakage of current from a housing to a side member.

[0010] The technical problems to be achieved in this document are not limited to the technical problems mentioned above, and other technical problems not mentioned can be clearly understood by a person having ordinary skill in the technical field to which the present invention belongs from the description below.

[0011] The technical tasks to be achieved in this document are not limited to the technical tasks mentioned above, and other technical tasks not mentioned will be clearly understood by those with ordinary skill in the technical field to which this document pertains from the description below.

[0012] According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, an electronic device may include a housing at least partly formed of a conductive material, a side member formed of a conductive material and surrounding a side surface of the housing, separated from the housing and including a power supply portion, a printed circuit board on which a communication module is disposed and disposed in the housing, a circuit member electrically connecting the power supply portion of the side member and the printed circuit board so that a communication signal generated from the communication module is transmitted to the side member, and a conductive connecting member electrically connecting the side member and the housing and including a current control element that controls a current applied from the housing to the side member.

[0013] According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, an antenna structure of an electronic device including a side member formed of a conductive material and separated from a housing, which surrounds a side surface of the housing and constitutes an exterior of the electronic device and has an oxide film formed on a surface thereof, may include a feeding part of the side member, a printed circuit board on which a communication module is arranged and which is arranged in the housing, a circuit member electrically connecting the feeding part of the side member and the printed circuit board so that a communication signal generated from the communication module is transmitted to the side member, and a conductive connecting member electrically connecting the side member and the housing, the conductive connecting member including a current control element that controls a current applied from the housing to the side member.

[0014] According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, the amount of current leaking from the housing to the side member can be controlled. For example, in one embodiment of the present disclosure, the side member may have a region used as an antenna radiator physically separated from the housing. Therefore, current is not applied from the housing to the side member, thereby ensuring a certain level of antenna radiation performance through the side member. In addition, since current is not applied from the housing to the side member, even if moisture enters between the side member and the oxide film through a scratch formed in the oxide film formed on the outer surface of the side member, hydrogen gas is not generated, thereby preventing the oxide film from peeling off from the side member.

[0015] The effects that can be obtained from the present disclosure are not limited to the effects mentioned above, and other effects that are not mentioned can be clearly understood by a person having ordinary skill in the art to which the present disclosure belongs from the description below.

[0089] In the following description, the relationship between the first housing (210) and the first side member (213) and the relationship between the second housing (220) and the second side member (223) illustrated in FIG. 2A will be described through the housing (410) and the side member (420). The description of the housing (410) and the side member (420) described below can be applied to the first housing (210) and the first side member (213), and can be applied to the second housing (220) and the second side member (223). However, for the convenience of description, the housing (410) of FIG. 5A will be described as having a configuration corresponding to the first housing (210) of FIG. 2A, and the side member (420) of FIG. 5A will be described as having a configuration corresponding to the first side member (213) of FIG. 2A.

[0090] According to one embodiment, as illustrated in FIGS. 5A and 5B , the electronic device (200) (e.g., the electronic device (101) of FIG. 1 ) may include a side member (420) (e.g., the first side member (213) and the second side member (223) of FIG. 2A ) and a housing (410) (e.g., the first housing (210) and / or the second housing (220) of FIG. 2A ). In one embodiment, the side member (420) may constitute a side appearance of the electronic device (200). For example, the side member (420) may be arranged to surround a side surface of the housing (410) such that at least a portion of the side surface may constitute a portion of the side surface of the electronic device (200). The side member (420) may be separated from the housing (410) in a region used as an antenna radiator. Accordingly, the side member (420) may prevent or reduce excess current from being applied from the housing (410) other than the current required for communication in a designated frequency band.

[0091] In one embodiment, the side member (420) and the housing (410) may be formed integrally. Alternatively, the side member (420) may be formed separately from the housing (410) and joined to the housing (410) through machining. In one embodiment, the housing (410) and the side member (420) may be formed using various machining methods, such as computer numerical control (CNC), die casting, or pressing.

[0092] In one embodiment, the housing (410) and the side member (420) may be formed at least partially of a metallic material. For example, the metallic material may include titanium, an amorphous alloy, a metal-ceramic composite material (e.g., cermet), stainless steel, magnesium, a magnesium alloy, aluminum, an aluminum alloy, a zinc alloy, or a copper alloy. This is merely an example, and the side member (420) and the housing (410) may be formed of various metallic materials. In addition, the side member (420) and the housing (410) may be formed at least partially of a non-metallic material. For example, the non-metallic material may include a synthetic resin, a ceramic, or an engineering plastic.

[0093] In one embodiment, the side member (420) may be formed of a conductive material (e.g., a metal material) and may be used as an antenna radiator. In one embodiment, the side member (420) may be electrically connected to a communication module (e.g., the communication module (190) of FIG. 1) connected to a printed circuit board (e.g., the board (270) of FIG. 4) of the electronic device (200) to transmit or receive a communication signal (e.g., a radio frequency (RF) signal) to or from an external device. In one embodiment, the side member (420) may be in contact with a circuit member (460) connected to the printed circuit board (270) and may be electrically connected to the communication module (190). In one embodiment, the side member (420) can be used as an antenna radiator to transmit or receive in at least one designated frequency band (e.g., LB (about 600 MHz to about 1 GHz), MB (about 1 GHz to about 2.3 GHz), HB (about 2.3 GHz to about 2.7 GHz), UHB (about 2.7 GHz to about 6 GHz)) via the circuit member (460). In one embodiment, the side member (420) can be electrically connected to the communication module (190) via the circuit member (460) to transmit or receive RF signals in a high frequency band (e.g., 3.5 GHz to 28 GHz, 28 GHz to 100 GHz (mmWave)).

[0094] According to one embodiment, as illustrated in FIG. 5A, the side member (420) may include a plurality of segments (421). In one embodiment, the side member (420) may be physically segmented into a plurality of parts through the segments (421). In one embodiment, the segments (421) may be spaces formed in the side member (420) such that one side member (420) may be segmented into a plurality of parts. In one embodiment, an insulating member may be disposed in the segments (421). In one embodiment, the insulating member may be formed of a material having low conductivity or a material having low permittivity. In one embodiment, the antenna resonance frequency may be determined according to the physical length of the side member (420). The side member (420) may have different resonance frequencies as it is segmented into a plurality of parts having different lengths through the insulating members disposed in the segments (421). The electronic device (200) can enable communication (e.g., short-range communication, long-range communication) in various frequency bands by utilizing side members (420) having different resonant frequencies.

[0095] In one embodiment, the circuit member (460) may transmit a communication signal processed by the communication module (190) of the electronic device (200) to the side member (420), which is an antenna radiator, or transmit a communication signal received by the side member (420) to the communication module (190). In one embodiment, the circuit member (460) may be a flexible printed circuit board (Fpcb) formed of a flexible material and including a plurality of conductive lines (not shown) connecting the side member (420) and the printed circuit board (270). In one embodiment, the conductive lines may include, for example, a signal line through which a communication signal is transmitted, a power line through which power for driving a circuit is transmitted, and a ground line connected to the ground. In one embodiment, the circuit member (460) may be a coaxial cable having an impedance of 50 ohms.

[0096] In one embodiment, the circuit member (460) can electrically connect the feeding portion (440) of the side member (420) and the printed circuit board (270). In one embodiment, the feeding portion (440) can be a point where a communication signal of the communication module (190) is applied through the circuit member (460). In one embodiment, the circuit member (460) can be formed of a conductive material to transmit an electrical signal generated in the communication module (190) to the feeding portion (440) of the side member (420). In one embodiment, the feeding portion (440) can be in contact with a conductive clip (e.g., a c-clip) of the circuit member (460). In addition, the feeding portion (440) can be electrically connected to the circuit member (460) through a pogo pin, a spring, a conductive poron, a conductive rubber, a conductive tape, or a conductive connector.

[0097] In one embodiment, the circuit element (460) may be an antenna integrated circuit (IC). In one embodiment, the circuit element (460) may include a plurality of integrated circuits. For example, the circuit element (460) may include various antenna-related circuits, such as a matching circuit for impedance matching and a switching circuit for allowing the antenna to correspond to wideband characteristics. In one embodiment, the matching circuit may be a circuit for matching impedance, including a component such as an inductor or a conductive connecting component (500) (capacitor). In one embodiment, the switching circuit may increase the antenna length of the antenna radiator (e.g., the side component (420)) by shorting the antenna radiators that are electrically open to each other. The matching circuit and switching circuit of the circuit element (460) described above should not be construed as limited by their names, but should be understood as a circuit including a component capable of performing the corresponding function. For example, the switching circuit may be referred to as a switching circuit portion, and the matching circuit may be referred to as a variable element portion. In one embodiment, some of the matching circuit or the switching circuit among the antenna-related circuits may be omitted.

[0098] According to one embodiment, an oxide film may be formed on the surface of the side member (420). In one embodiment, the oxide film may prevent corrosion of the side member (420) and increase the durability of the side member (420). In one embodiment, the oxide film may be formed on the surface of the side member (420) through an anodizing process. In one embodiment, the anodizing process is an electrochemical process that forms a uniform and thick oxide film on the surface of a metal by immersing a metal such as aluminum in a liquid electrolyte and then applying current using the metal as an anode and an auxiliary electrode as a cathode.

[0099] In one embodiment, referring to FIG. 5A, the side member (420) may have an antenna length (L) that can communicate in a given frequency band. The antenna length (L) may be determined by the location of a portion (ground point, ground) from which a communication signal exits (feed portion (440)) to which a communication signal is fed. In one embodiment, the feed portion (440) of the side member (420) may be a portion that comes into contact with a circuit member (460). In one embodiment, the ground point of the side member (420) may be a portion that comes into contact with a conductive connection member (500) that will be described later.

[0100] In a comparative embodiment, the side member (420) and the housing (410) may be physically connected. For example, an antenna signal applied to the side member (420) may be grounded through a portion of the housing (410) that is in contact with the side member (420). In one embodiment, when the side member (420) and the housing (410) are physically connected, current may be applied from the housing (410) to the side member (420) through the connected portion. For example, current leaking from an electronic component (e.g., a printed circuit board (270)) disposed in the housing (410) or current leaking from an external electronic device (200) (e.g., a charging port) when the electronic device (200) is connected to an external electronic device (200) may be applied from the housing (410) to the side member (420), thereby degrading the antenna radiation performance through the side member (420).

[0101] In addition, the oxide film of the side member (420) may be scratched depending on the use of the electronic device (200). If the user's sweat, moisture, etc. enters through the scratches of the oxide film and an excessive amount of current leaks from the housing (410) to the side member (420) through the portion where the housing (410) and the side member (420) are connected, hydrogen gas may be generated in the space between the side member (420) and the oxide film. The hydrogen gas may peel the oxide film layer from the side member (420).

[0102] According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, as illustrated in FIGS. 5A and 5B , the side member (420) may be separated from the housing (410) in an area used as an antenna radiator so as to block or reduce an excess current other than the current required for communication in a designated frequency band from being applied from the housing (410). For example, the side member (420) may be separated from the housing (410) in an area used as an antenna radiator.

[0103] In one embodiment, as illustrated in FIGS. 5A and 5B , the side member (420) may have a region that is used as an antenna radiator separated from the housing (410). For example, a region of the side member (420) that is in contact with the circuit member (460) and is used as an antenna radiator may be spaced apart from the housing (410). In one embodiment, the electronic device (200) may include a conductive connecting member (500) that is in contact with the side member (420) and the housing (410) to electrically connect the side member (420) and the housing (410). In one embodiment, the conductive connection member (500) may have a portion that contacts the side member (420) (e.g., the first metal plate (530) of FIG. 6A and / or the first contact member of FIG. 9A) and a portion that contacts the housing (410) (e.g., the second metal plate (540) of FIG. 6A) formed of a conductive material (e.g., a metal material). In one embodiment, the conductive connection member (500) may function as a ground to transmit a communication signal applied from the circuit member (460) to the power supply unit (440) of the side member (420) to the housing (410). For example, the conductive connection member (500) may transmit a communication signal applied from the circuit member (460) to the power supply unit (440) of the side member (420) to the housing (410) connected to the ground.

[0104] In one embodiment, the side member (420) may have an antenna length (L) that is determined to enable communication in a given frequency band. For example, the antenna length (L) of the side member (420) may be determined as the distance between the feeding portion (440) of the side member (420) and the point where the conductive connection member (500) contacts the side member (420). In one embodiment, the distance between the feeding portion (440) of the side member (420) and the point where the conductive connection member (500) contacts the side member (420) may be determined based on a frequency band that is to be communicated through the side member (420).

[0105] According to one embodiment, as illustrated in FIG. 5B, a reinforcing member (401) formed of a non-metallic material may be disposed on a side surface of the housing (410). In one embodiment, the reinforcing member (401) may be disposed in a space between the housing (410) and the side surface member (420). In one embodiment, the reinforcing member (401) may be formed of a synthetic resin, ceramic, engineering plastic, or polycarbonate (PC) material. In one embodiment, the reinforcing member (401) may be disposed between the side surface member (420) and the side surface of the housing (410) through an injection molding process.

[0106] In one embodiment, the reinforcing member (401) may include a mounting portion (402) (e.g., mounting portion (402) of FIG. 8) on which a conductive connecting member (500) is disposed. The conductive connecting member (500) may be secured to the mounting portion (402) via an adhesive member (P) attached to one surface. In one embodiment, the conductive connecting member (500) may be disposed on the reinforcing member (401) and may contact a side member (420) formed of a metal material and a portion of a housing (410) formed of a metal material to induce a communication signal from the side member (420) to a ground connected to the housing (410).

[0107] According to one embodiment, as illustrated in FIGS. 6A to 7C, the conductive connecting member (500) may include a first metal plate (530) in contact with the side member (420), a second metal plate (540) in contact with the housing (410), a circuit board (510) disposed between the first metal plate (530) and the second metal plate (540), and a current control element (520) disposed on the circuit board (510) to control a current applied from the housing (410) to the side member (420). In one embodiment, the conductive connecting member (500) may be stacked in the following order: first metal plate (530) - circuit board (510) - second metal plate (540). In one embodiment, the first metal plate (530) and the second metal plate (540) may be electrically connected to the circuit board (510) by soldering or a conductive tape. In one embodiment, the side member (420) and the housing (410) may be electrically connected through a first metal plate (530) and a second metal plate (540). A communication signal applied from the circuit member (460) to the power supply (440) may be emitted to a ground connected to the housing (410) through the first metal plate (530) - the circuit board (510) - the second metal plate (540).

[0108] In one embodiment, the current control element (520) can control the current applied from the housing (410) to the side member (420). For example, the current control element (520) can block or reduce current leaking from an electronic component or an external electronic device (200) (e.g., a charging port) disposed in the housing (410) from being applied to the side member (420). In one embodiment, the conductive connection element (500) can block or reduce direct current (DC) current applied from the housing (410) to the side member (420) through the current control element (520).

[0109] FIG. 8 is a drawing illustrating a state in which a conductive connecting member is in contact with a side member and a first housing according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. FIGS. 9A and 9B are drawings illustrating the configuration of the conductive connecting member illustrated in FIG. 8. FIG. 10A is a cross-sectional view taken along line AA illustrated in FIG. 8. FIG. 10B is a cross-sectional view taken along line BB illustrated in FIG. 8.

[0110] The following description may be a description of a conductive connecting member (600) of a different embodiment from the conductive connecting member (500) illustrated in FIGS. 5A to 7C. The conductive connecting member (600) described below may perform the same role as the conductive connecting member (500) described above in FIGS. 5A to 7C. In the following description, descriptions of components identical or similar to the components described in FIGS. 5A to 7C will be omitted.

[0111] According to one embodiment, as illustrated in FIG. 8, a conductive connecting member (600) may be disposed on a mounting portion (402) of a reinforcing member (401) disposed between a housing (410) (e.g., the first housing (210), the second housing (220) of FIG. 2A) and a side member (420) (e.g., the first side member (213), the second side member (223) of FIG. 2A). In one embodiment, the conductive connecting member (600) may be electrically connected to the side member (420) and the housing (410).

[0112] In one embodiment, referring to FIGS. 9A and 9B, the conductive connecting member (600) may include a circuit board (610) on which a current control element (620) is disposed, and a first contact member (630) disposed on the circuit board (610) and in contact with the side member (420). In one embodiment, the first contact member (630) may be formed of a conductive material and may be electrically connected to the side member (420). In one embodiment, the first contact member (630) may be a contact member formed of a conductive material. For example, the first contact member (630) may be a clip (e.g., a C-clip) formed of a conductive material. In one embodiment, the circuit board (610) may include a screw hole (611) into which a connecting member (e.g., a screw) (S) is inserted. In one embodiment, the circuit board (610) of the conductive connecting member (600) can be fixed to the housing (410) through a connecting member (S) of a conductive material inserted into a screw hole (611). The conductive connecting member (600) can be electrically connected to the side member (420) through the first contact member (630) and electrically connected to the housing (410) through the connecting member (S). Accordingly, a communication signal of the communication module (190) applied from the circuit member (460) to the power supply unit (440) can be guided to a ground connected to the housing (410) through the first contact member (630) - the circuit board (610) - the connecting member (S).

[0113] In one embodiment not shown in the drawing, the conductive connecting member (600) may include a circuit board (610) on which a current control element (620) is disposed, a first contact member (630) disposed on the circuit board (610) and in contact with the side member (420), and a second contact member (not shown) disposed on the circuit board (630) and in contact with the first housing (210). In one embodiment, the first contact member (630) and the second contact member may be contact members formed of a conductive material. In one embodiment, the first contact member (630) and the second contact member may be clips (e.g., C-clip) formed of a conductive material. In one embodiment, the conductive connecting member (600) may be disposed on the mounting portion (402) of the reinforcing member (401) and may be in contact with the side member (420) through the first contact member (630) and with the first housing (210) through the second contact member. Accordingly, a communication signal applied from the circuit member (460) to the power supply unit (440) can be guided to the housing (410) through the first contact member (630) - the circuit board (610) - the second contact member.

[0114] According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, as illustrated in FIGS. 5A, 5B, and 8, the side member (420) may have a region used as an antenna radiator separated from the housing (410). In one embodiment, the antenna length (L) of the side member (420) may be determined by the distance between the feeding portion (440) of the side member (420) and a point of contact with a conductive connecting member (e.g., the conductive connecting member (500) of FIG. 7A and the conductive connecting member (600) of FIG. 9A). In one embodiment, the conductive connecting members (500, 600) may guide a communication signal applied from a communication module (190) through a circuit member (460) to the housing (410) connected to the ground, thereby forming an antenna in the side member (420). Meanwhile, the current control elements (520, 620) disposed on the circuit boards (510, 610) of the conductive connecting members (500, 600) can block or reduce current leaking from electronic components or external electronic devices (e.g., charging ports) disposed in the housing (410) from being applied to the side member (420). Accordingly, current is not applied from the housing (410) to the side member (420), so that a certain level of antenna radiation performance through the side member (420) can be secured. In addition, since current is not applied from the housing (410) to the side member (420), even if moisture flows between the side member (420) and the oxide film through a scratch on the oxide film formed on the outer surface of the side member (420), hydrogen gas is not generated, so that the oxide film may not be peeled off from the side member (420).

[0115] According to various embodiments, the electronic device (200) (e.g., the electronic device (101) of FIG. 1) has been described as being a foldable electronic device, but the present invention is not limited thereto. In one embodiment, the present invention may be applied to an electronic device having a bar type or plate type appearance formed by only one of the first housing (210) or the second housing (220). In addition, the present invention may be applied to a slidable electronic device, a stretchable electronic device, and / or a rollable electronic device. A "slidable electronic device," a "stretchable electronic device," and / or a "rollable electronic device" may be an electronic device in which a display (e.g., the first display (230) of FIG. 2A) is capable of bending deformation, such that at least a portion thereof is folded, wound, or rolled, or at least a portion thereof is expanded. A sliderable electronic device, a stretchable electronic device, and / or a rollable electronic device can be used to expand the screen display area by unfolding the display or exposing a larger area of the display to the outside, depending on the user's needs.
