Abstract

Example embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for low complexity beamforming. In an example method, a network device obtains a channel covariance matrix based on uplink channel measurements associated with a plurality of polarizations. The network device obtains an augmented signature vector. The network device determines a beamforming matrix based on the channel covariance matrix and the augmented signature vector. In this way, the calculation of the full subband channel covariance matrix can be avoided and low-complexity subband beamforming can be achieved.

Description

LOW COMPLEXITY BEAMFORMINGFIELD

[0001] Example embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to the field of communication, and in particular, to a method, a network device, an apparatus, and a computer readable medium for low complexity beamforming.BACKGROUND

[0002] Massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) combined with beamforming can deliver a high spatial multiplexing gain and a large beamforming gain. It is considered as one key feature of 5G or New Radio (NR) to enhance the system spectral efficiency. The 6G radio should provide an even higher capacity to support a large number of users. The mid-band spectrum (7 GHz ~ 20 GHz) will be combined with extreme massive MIMO antenna arrays with up to 256 transceivers (TRXs) and larger antenna arrays at the terminals can provide a much more enhanced capacity compared to 5G.

[0003] Regularized Zero Forcing (RZF) scheme applies instantaneous / subband channel estimates to calculate beamforming weights but has limited performance as compared to the eigenvector based beamforming (EBF) solutions. The well performed EBF usually relies on the calculation of the full channel covariance matrix with two polarizations and its Eigenvalue Decomposition (EVD) , leads to an unaffordable computational complexity for subband processing. Therefore, low complexity subband beamforming needs to be further investigated.SUMMARY

[0037] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a subscriber station (SS) , a portable subscriber station, a mobile station (MS) , a station (STA) or station device, or an access terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of Things (IoT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (for example, remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (for example, a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks,  and the like. In the following description, the terms “station” , “station device” , “STA” , “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0038] The term “transceiver” may refer to any device that may be coupled to one or more antennas or antenna ports to wirelessly transmit and / or receive communication signals. The antennas or antenna ports may be the same or different types. The antennas or antenna ports may be located in different positions of an apparatus. One or more transceivers allow the apparatus to communicate with other devices that may be wired and / or wireless. The one or more transceivers may include processors, controllers, radios, sockets, plugs, buffers, or the like circuits to form one or more communication channels to one or more radio frequency units. The one or more transceivers may be integrated in an apparatus or a system, for example a cellular communication apparatus or system, a satellite communication apparatus or system, a WLAN system, or a short ranging system for example Bluetooth system.

[0039] Regularized Zero Forcing (RZF) scheme applies instantaneous / subband channel estimates to calculate beamforming weights but has limited performance as compared to the eigenvector based beamforming (EBF) solutions. The well performed EBF usually relies on the calculation of the full channel covariance matrix with two polarizations. Eigenvalue Decomposition (EVD) of the full channel covariance matrix leads to an unaffordable computational complexity for subband processing.

[0040] Some low-complexity EBF implementations can calculate a channel covariance matrix averaged over two polarizations in the long-term wideband case, by assuming the same channel covariance matrix for two polarizations as well as the zero term for cross polarization. However, the assumption and the corresponding EBF algorithm do not apply for the subband case.

[0041] In view of above, there is a need to support low complexity beamforming, especially subband beamforming at network. According to some embodiments of the disclosure, a network device may obtain a channel covariance matrix based on uplink channel measurements associated with polarizations. The channel covariance matrix may comprise channel covariance submatrices each corresponding to a polarization, and cross correlation submatrices for the polarizations. The network device may further obtain at least one target beam vector based on uplink measurements or feedback from terminal device (s) . Then the network device may determine a beamforming matrix based on the channel covariance matrix  and the at least one target beam vector. In some embodiments, the channel covariance matrix may be configured as a structured one where the channel covariance submatrices corresponding to polarizations each is located along the diagonal, and cross correlation submatrices are off the diagonal of the channel covariance matrix.

[0042] The proposed solution can calculate a structured channel covariance matrix in full size by individually calculating the channel covariance submatrices per polarization in the short-term / subband sense and the cross correlation matrix of channels between different polarizations in the long-term / wideband sense. It can avoid direct calculation of the channel covariance matrix from uplink measurements in brute force. It can also avoid the time-consuming eigenvalue decomposition of the channel covariance matrix. Therefore, the efficiency of beamforming calculation for subbands is significantly improved.

[0043] For illustrative purposes, principles and example embodiments of the present disclosure will be described below with reference to FIG. 1 to FIG. 8. However, it is to be noted that these embodiments are given to enable the skilled in the art to understand inventive concepts of the present disclosure and implement the solution as proposed herein, and not intended to limit scope of the present application in any way.

[0044] FIG. 1 illustrates an example of an application scenario 100 in which some example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. The application scenario 100, which is a part of a communication network, includes terminal device (s) and network device (s) . In the descriptions of the example embodiments of the present disclosure, the network environment 100 may also be referred to as a communication system 100 (for example, a portion of a communication network) . The communication system 100 may be a non-terrestrial or terrestrial system.

[0047] The network device 110 can provide services to the terminal device 120, and the network device 110 and the terminal device (s) 120 may communicate data and control information with each other. In some embodiments, the network device 110 and the terminal device 120 may communicate with direct links / channels.

[0048] In the communication system 100, a link from the network device 110 to the terminal device 120 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the terminal device 120 to the network device 110 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In downlink, the network device 110 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the terminal device 120 is a receiving (RX) device (or a receiver) . In uplink, the terminal device 120 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the network device 110 is a RX device (or a receiver) . It is to be understood that the network device 110 may provide one or more serving cells. As illustrated in FIG. 1, the network device 110 provides one serving cell 102, and the terminal device 120 camps on the serving cell 102. In some embodiments, the network device 110 can provide multiple serving cells and the terminal device 120 may switch from a source cell to a target cell between the serving cells during its mobility. It is to be understood that the number of serving cell (s) shown in FIG. 1 is for illustrative purposes without suggesting any limitation.

[0049] Communications in the network environment 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the fourth generation (4G) , the fifth generation (5G) and the sixth generation (6G) and on the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as institute for electrical and electronics engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future, such as universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) , long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , the fifth generation (5G) , new radio (NR) , the sixth generation (6G) , wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) and worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) standards, and employs any suitable communication technologies, including, for example, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) , orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) , time division multiplexing (TDM) , frequency division multiplexing (FDM) , code division multiplexing (CDM) , Bluetooth, ZigBee, narrowband-Internet of things (NB-IoT) , enhanced machine type  communication (eMTC) , enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) , massive machine type communication (mMTC) , ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) , carrier aggregation (CA) , dual connectivity (DC) , and new radio unlicensed (NR-U) technologies.

[0050] In some embodiments of the present disclosure, the network device 110 may estimate an instantaneous channel H at a time t and a frequency f from the uplink sounding reference signal (SRS) measurements. The channel may consist of coefficients from a number of polarizations, e.g. two polarizations. The network device 110 may calculate a channel covariance matrix based on uplink channel measurements. The channel covariance matrix may be a structured matrix including covariance submatrices each corresponding to one polarization and cross correlation submatrices. The covariance submatrices for the polarizations may represent short term channel information in the subbands, while the cross correlation submatrices may represent long term channel information in the wideband. The network device 110 may further obtain an augmented signature vector consists of one or more target beam vectors. The network device 110 may further derive beamforming matrix based on the channel covariance matrix and the augmented signature vector. In this way, low-complexity implementations may be applied to improve subband beamforming at network devices.

[0051] FIG. 2 illustrates an example flowchart of a method 200 implemented at a network device according to example embodiments of the present disclosure. For ease of understanding, the method 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. It would be appreciated that although the method 200 has been described referring to the network device 110 of FIG. 1, this method 200 may be likewise applied to other similar communication scenarios. The method 200 generally provides an implementation mechanism for low-complexity subband beamforming with a full beamforming performance. The methodology and steps of the method 200 are described as follows.

[0052] At 210, the network device 110 obtains a channel covariance matrix based on uplink channel measurements associated with a plurality of polarizations. The channel covariance matrix may comprise a plurality of channel covariance submatrices and a plurality of cross correlation submatrices for the plurality of polarizations. A channel covariance submatrix among the plurality of channel covariance submatrices may correspond to a polarization of the plurality polarizations.

[0053] In some embodiments, the network device 110 may calculate each of the channel covariance submatrices based on uplink channel measurements associated with the polarization at a given time in subband. That is, the channel covariance submatrices are calculated in short term or subband.

[0054] The network device 110 may calculate each of the cross correlation submatrices comprising a plurality of subbands based on the uplink channel measurements included a time interval in a wideband. For a pair of polarizations, the network device 110 may calculate two submatrices which are complex conjugated with each other. For example, regarding a first polarization and a second polarization among the plurality of polarizations, the network device may calculate a first cross correlation submatrix and second cross correlation submatrix based on uplink channel measurements associated with the first polarization and uplink channel measurements associated with the second polarization, where the uplink channel measurements are included in a time interval in the wideband. As such, the cross correlation submatrices are calculated in long term.

[0055] In some embodiments, the network device 110 may position the calculated channel covariance submatrices at a diagonal of the channel covariance matrix and the calculated cross correlation submatrices off the diagonal of the channel covariance matrix to obtain a structured channel covariance matrix. In some embodiments, a panel of the network device 110 may include antenna elements associated with two different polarizations. In this case, the structured channel covariance may comprise a first channel covariance submatrix corresponding to a first polarizations at the upper left corner and a second channel covariance submatrix corresponding to a second polarizations at the lower right corner (i.e., along the diagonal) , which are short term in subbands. The structured channel covariance may also comprise two complex conjugate cross correlation submatrices at the lower left corner and the upper right corner (i.e., off the diagonal) , which are long term in the wideband.

[0056] At 220, the network device 110 may obtain an augmented signature vector comprising at least one target beam vector based on at least one of the following: the uplink channel measurements, or at least one indicator indicative of a beam vector from at least one terminal device based on downlink measurements. The augmented signature vector may be calculated in long term or wideband.

[0057] In some embodiments, the network device 110 may derive two or more target beam vectors, and concatenate the target beam vectors to obtain the augmented signature vector.  Alternatively, the network device 110 may carry out beam sweeping and directly obtain the augmented signature vector based on terminal device’s beam feedback indicative of a dominant beam. Detailed implementations of the augmented signature vector will be described with reference to FIGS. 3-5.

[0058] At 230, the network device 110 determines a beamforming matrix based on the channel covariance matrix and the augmented signature vector. In some embodiments, the network device 110 may perform a matrix multiplication of a power of the channel covariance matrix and the augmented signature vector to obtain a beam of the beamforming matrix. The network device 110 may further perform an orthogonalization procedure on the beamforming matrix to obtain a final beamforming matrix. Alternatively, the network device 110 may perform eigenvalue decomposition of the channel covariance matrix without use of the at least one target beam vector to obtain the beamforming matrix.

[0059] FIG. 3 illustrates example flowchart of a method 300 for beamforming according to example embodiments of the present disclosure. The method 300 is an example implementation of the method 200, which may be performed by the network device 110 show in FIG. 1. In the example method 300, it is assumed that the network device 110 has a panel of antenna elements associated with two polarizations. It will be understood that embodiments of the disclosure are also applicable to a network device having a panel of antenna elements with more than two polarizations.

[0060] As shown, at block 310, the network device 110 may perform calculation of the structured channel covariance matrix from uplink channel estimates 305. At block 312, the network device 110 may obtain channel covariance matrix per polarization by performing split calculation of the channel covariance matrix for each polarization in each subband. At block 314, the network device 110 may obtain long-term / wideband cross channel covariance from two polarizations. At block 316, the network device 110 builds the structured channel covariance matrix, e.g., by positioning the channel covariance matrices for each polarization at the diagonal and cross correlation matrices off the diagonal. Details of the calculation of the structured channel covariance matrix is provided as below.

[0061] The network device 110 may estimate the instantaneous channel at time t and frequency f from the uplink SRS measurement, where Mr, MT are the number of antennas at UE and the network device, respectively. The channel consists of the coefficients from two polarizations, i.e.,  with channel from  each polarization is

[0062] The network device 110 may obtain the structured channel covariance matrix  The matrix comprises two channel covariance submatrices and two cross correlation submatrices, i.e., a first and a second covariance submatrices each corresponding to one of the two polarizations, and a first and second cross correlation submatrices for the two polarizations. The network device 110 may individually calculate the channel covariance submatrix for the n-th polarization in short-term / subbands by

[0063] where Nf is the number of considered subband samples in the frequency domain.

[0064] The network device 110 may also calculate the cross correlation submatrix of channels from two polarizations in the long-term / wideband sense as

[0065] where Nt is the number of samples in the time window.

[0066] The network device 110 may further derive by carrying out the complex conjugate of R1, 2. Or alternatively, the network device 110 may calculate R2, 1 firstly calculated and then obtain

[0067] The structured channel covariance matrix can be built by

[0068] which includes both short-term / subband and long-term / wideband channel statistics at diagonals and off-diagonals, respectively.

[0069] The cross channel correlation submatrix may also be calculated in subband. If so, then the structure channel covariance matrix turns out to be the same as the full channel covariance matrix in subband. The full and short-term / subband channel covariance matrix R (t) can be obtained by

[0070] At 320, the network device 110 constructs the augmented signature vector using the long term signature vector  (a. k. a. target beam vector) . At 322, the network device 110 obtains the long term / wideband signature vector. The long term signature vector a can be determined from the uplink SRS measurements. Two implementation solutions are proposed as shown in FIGS. 4 and 5.

[0071] FIG. 4 illustrates an example flowchart of a method 400 for calculating the long term signature vector according to example embodiments of the present disclosure. The method 400 is based on angular power spectrum (APS) .

[0072] At 410, the network device 110 estimates the channel covariance matrix. In some embodiments, it may estimate the long-term / wideband channel covariance matrix R averaged over two polarizations using

[0073] At 420, the network device 110 calculates angular power spectrum based on the long-term / wideband channel covariance matrix R. In some embodiments, it may calculate the APS is using the Bartlett beamforming by ρ (θ) =bH (θ) Rb (θ)                (6)

[0074] where b (θ) denotes the array response for the angle θ.

[0075] At 430, the network device 110 determines a dominant angle. The dominant angle θ0 may correspond to the strongest peak from APS

[0076] At 440, the network device 110 determines an array response vector of the dominant angle. The signature vector may be obtained as the array response in the direction of θ0 , i.e., a=b (θ0) , where b (θ) denotes the array response of the network device 110 at angle θ.

[0077] FIG. 5 illustrates another example flowchart of a method 500 for calculating the long term signature vector according to example embodiments of the present disclosure. The method 400 is based on codebook.

[0078] At 510, the network device 110 estimates the long-term / wideband channel covariance matrix R from (5) .

[0079] At 520, the network device 110 selects the dominant beams from the pre-defined codebook. For example, we could select the dominant beam using the Grid-of-Beam (GoB)  concept, by

[0080] where cj is the j-th column of the codebook with N indicating the size / resolution of the codebook. Thus, the signature vector can be obtained by a=cmax.

[0081] Alternatively, both the APS-based and the codebook-based methods 400 and 500 may be split into vertical and horizontal domains. For example, as an alternative of the method 400, the long-term channel covariance matrices estimated in vertical and horizontal can be written as

[0082] and

[0083] respectively, where Mv, Mh denote the number of antenna elements of the panel in vertical and horizontal directions in one polarization, i.e., MT=2MvMh.

[0084] Similarly in (5) , the APS functions can also be obtained in vertical and horizontal domains by

[0085] and

[0086] where bv, bh are array responses in vertical and horizontal directions. According to (7) the final signature vector can be calculated by Kronecker product of array responses at dominant angles in vertical and horizontal, i.e.,

[0087] As an alternative of the method 500, vertical and horizontal long-term signature vectors can also be obtained from the codebook via

[0088] and

[0089] where cv, j, ch, j are the j-th columns of the codebooks and in vertical and horizontal, respectively. The final signature vector would be the Kronecker product of the two as in (11) .

[0090] In some embodiments, the long-term signature vector can also be determined from UE’s beam feedback. The network device 110 may carry out beam sweeping with GoB, receives UE’s feedback of dominant beams, and determines the signature vector from the dominant beam. Alternatively, the beam sweeping may be performed in vertical and horizontal directions of the antenna elements in the panel of the network device. The network device 110 may receive a first feedback indicative of a first dominant beam vector in the vertical direction and a second feedback indicative of a first dominant beam vector in the horizontal direction. It then determines the signature vector as the Kronecker product of the first and the second dominant beam vectors.

[0091] At 324, the network device 110 constructs the augmented signature using the long term signature vector. In some embodiments, the network device 110 may concatenate two same or different long-term signature vectors to obtain the augmented signature vector. For example, the augmented signature vector can be constructed by repeatedly concatenating the obtained long-term / wideband signature vector

[0092] Other ways are possible such as one is from measurement and the other is from the beam feedback. In addition, the number of signature vectors is not restricted to one, depending on the beamforming calculations.

[0093] At 330, the network device 110 may perform beam calculation using the structured channel covariance matrix and the augmented signature vector to obtain the beamforming matrix. The network device 110 may obtain beams of the beamforming matrix based on matrix multiplication of a power of the structured channel covariance matrix and the augmented signature vector.

[0094] According to structured Krylov subspace beamforming (S-KSB) , the network device 110 may construct beamforming matrix with r beams by

[0095] which lies in the augmented Krylov subspace. A subsequent orthogonalization procedure on  may be performed to obtain the final beamforming matrix W (t) .

[0096] Alternatively, the network device 110 may perform eigenvalue decomposition of the channel covariance matrix to obtain the beamforming matrix, without calculation of the  augmented signature vector. In some embodiments, structured EBF (S-EBF) can also be applied based on the structured channel covariance matrix. The Eigen-beams are computed from the EVD of i.e., W (t) =V (: , 1: r) with

[0097] FIG. 6 illustrates performance of proposed low complexity beaming according to example embodiments of the present disclosure. This section evaluates the performance of the proposed subband beamforming algorithm. Simulation setup is shown in Table 1.

[0098] Table 1: Simulation setup for subband beamforming

[0099] Consider SNR = 16 dB and 4 UEs. The “KSB” corresponds to the algorithm in (13) . “Full” refers to the algorithms using the full and short-term / subband channel covariance matrix R (t) and is considered as the baseline. The “Full KSB” requires the full channel covariance matrix R (t) as well as the full and the short-term / subband signature vector afull (t) obtained from R (t) . The “Full EBF” needs EVD of R (t) to obtain the subband beams. The RZF scheme (current solution) directly applies the full subband channel H (t, f) and compute the beamforming weights by

[0100] where is the noise variance and PT is the transmit power.

[0101] Under different long-term or subband scenarios, evaluate the S-KSB and S-EBF schemes. Consider to obtain the cross channel correlation matrix (i.e., off-diagonal terms) using the total and a fraction of the bandwidth B. The “B / n” with n=1, 2, 5 indicates the use of the total bandwidth, half of the bandwidth, and 1 / 5 of the bandwidth, respectively. The “ST” means the cross channel correlation matrix is also short-term, and the structured channel covariance turns out to be (4) . The “ST-KSB” refers to the case of using the augmented long- term signature vector obtain from (11) and the full subband channel covariance matrix R (t) . The zero cross channel correlation term is also considered with legend “0” .

[0102] In FIG. 6, the spectral efficiency performance in terms of the geometric mean for various schemes are shown. It can be observed that the “RZF” (current solution) has around ~7%loss compared with the “Full” version of EBF or KSB (baseline solutions) . In the best case with subband channel covariance matrix ( “ST” ) , the S-KSB has a negligible performance loss as compared to the full and subband counterparts (baseline solutions) and 7%gain as compared to the “RZF” (current solution) . Under the long-term case, the S-KSB provides ~4%gain over the “RZF” . Similarly, the S-EBF can achieve ~5%gain over the “RZF” . Therefore, it is quite promising to apply the proposed structured algorithms with low-complexity implementations to support subband beamforming in current and future products.

[0103] In view of above, embodiments of the disclosure provide a structured implementation mechanism for low-complexity subband beamforming with a full beamforming performance. It avoids the calculation of the full subband channel covariance matrix by breaking it down into sub-matrices in a structured way. The structured hybrid subband / wideband (long-term) channel covariance matrix is still effective to deliver a good performance. In addition, the augmented signature vector obtained from the long-term signature vector further reduces the computational efforts. In some embodiments, an apparatus capable of performing the method 200 (for example, the network device 110) may comprise means for performing the respective steps of the method 200. The means may be implemented in any suitable form. For example, the means may be implemented in a circuitry or software module.

[0104] In some example embodiments, the apparatus comprises: means for obtaining a channel covariance matrix based on uplink channel measurements associated with a plurality of polarizations, wherein the channel covariance matrix comprises a plurality of channel covariance submatrices and a plurality of cross correlation submatrices for the plurality of polarizations, and a channel covariance submatrix among the plurality of channel covariance submatrices corresponds to a polarization of the plurality polarizations; means for obtain an augmented signature vector comprising at least one target beam vector based on at least one of the following: the uplink channel measurements, or at least one indicator indicative of a beam vector from at least one terminal device based on downlink measurements; and means for a beamforming matrix based on the channel covariance matrix and the augmented signature vector.

[0105] In some embodiments, the plurality of the channel covariance submatrices may be positioned at a diagonal of the channel covariance matrix, and the plurality of the cross correlation submatrices are positioned off the diagonal of the channel covariance matrix.

[0112] In some embodiments, the channel covariance matrix is a first channel covariance matrix, and the means for obtaining the augmented signature vector comprising at least one target beam may comprise: means for calculating a second channel covariance matrix in a wideband comprising a plurality of subbands based on the uplink channel measurements, the second channel covariance matrix being averaged over the plurality of polarizations; means for calculating a set of beam vectors based on the second channel covariance matrix and a pre-defined codebook; and means for determining the at least one target beam vector based on a maximum of the set of beam vectors.
