[0004] BACKGROUND

[0005] The background information herein below relates to the present disclosure but is not necessarily prior art.

[0006] Substances such as biomass, which are usually subjected to process such as supercritical fluid extraction are typically loaded in a vessel through which carbon dioxide in its supercritical fluid state is passed. These mesh plates (105A, 105B) prevent leakage of material during the extraction process contain the raw material within the vessel (1000). These mesh plates (115A, 115B) are configured hold the material within the vessel even under high pressure.

[0083] The loading vessel (1000) includes a top O-ring type gasket (108B) and a bottom O-ring type gasket (108A). The top O-ring type gasket (108B) is configured to be positioned between the top lid (107B) and the shell (102) and the bottom O-ring type gasket (108A) is configured to be positioned between the bottom lid (107B) and the shell (102). The top O-ring type gasket (108B) and bottom O-ring type gasket (108 A) to prevent escape of supercritical CO2 and to sustain the pressure within the vessel (1000).

[0084] In the preferred embodiment, an O-ring type gasket (108B) is placed along the periphery of the top portion of the loading vessel (1000), positioned between the top lid (107B) and the shell (102) as shown in Figure 2. Similarly, a bottom O-ring gasket (108 A) is seated between the bottom lid (107 A) and the shell (102) at the vessel's bottom portion. Together, the top (108B) and bottom (108A) O-ring gaskets work to effectively contain the supercritical CO2 within the vessel (1000), ensuring there is no escape of pressure or solvent during operation.

[0085] In an embodiment, the top gasket (108B) and the bottom gasket (108A) can be selected form the group consisting of rubber gaskets, cork gaskets, paper gaskets, compressed non-asbestos fiber (CNAF) gaskets, ring type joint (RTJ) gaskets, corrugated gaskets, spiral wound gaskets (SWG), kammprofile gaskets, metal jacketed gaskets, liquid gaskets, PTFE (teflon) gaskets, graphite gaskets or any combination thereof.

[0086] In an embodiment, the plurality of holes (120) are configured spirally on the tubes (110) the spiral arrangement of the holes (120) creates a turbulent flow of CO2 therethrough, which allows the supercritical CO2 to penetrate the substance without agglomerating it.

[0087] In an embodiment, the top plate (115B) and the bottom plate (115 A) of the diffuser are perforated, further aiding the distribution of CO2.

The top portion of each tube (110) is sealed to ensure proper direction of the solvent flow.

[0089] In the working configuration, carbon dioxide (CO2) in its supercritical form is passed through the diffuser (100). Due to the configuration of the diffuser (100), CO2 will be passed through the perforations (125) configured on the bottom plate (115A). Further, CO2 will also pass into the tubes (110) through the perforations (125). The holes (120) configured on the tubes (110) are configured to act as vents for the passage of CO2 into the loading vessel (1000). However, the decreasing size of the holes (120) tend to allow passage of CO2 at a higher velocity. In addition to this, the spiral configuration of the holes (120) create a turbulent flow of CO2 therethrough, which allows the supercritical CO2 to penetrate the substance without agglomerating it.
