[0005] - a linear monoacid selected from linear aliphatic C6-C22 monocarboxylic acids; and
[0006] - a branched monoacid selected from branched aliphatic C6-C12 monocarboxylic acids.
[0007] The invention also relates the a hydraulic fluid. Combinations of preferred embodiments with other preferred embodiments are within the scope of the present invention.
[0008] There are many known hydraulic fluids for use in hydraulic systems which usually have mechanical components driven by pressurized hydraulic fluids. The specific requirements upon these hydraulic fluids vary depending on the application but typically include a need for adequate fluid stability, low viscosity at low temperatures, high viscosity index, and low friction.
[0009] It is also becoming increasingly important that the hydraulic fluids have minimal environmental impact on disposal or release from a hydraulic system. This applies in particular to offshore oil and gas drilling, hydraulic applications on ships, and other production activities where released hydraulic fluids has the potential to enter the environment.
[0010] A number of disadvantages, particularly environmental disadvantages, associated with many known hydraulic fluids are attributable to their use of oil, especially mineral oil or synthetic hydrocarbon oil. It would be advantageous to provide hydraulic fluids, which include environmentally friendly components, which not rely on mineral or synthetic hydrocarbon oil formulations in order to work effectively.
[0011] Object was to overcome these disadvantages, especially to find environmentally friendly, biodegradable hydraulic fluids with excellent cold temperature properties and high viscosity index.
[0012] The object was solved by a method for operating a hydraulic system comprising pressurizing a hydraulic fluid in the hydraulic system where the hydraulic fluid comprises a complex ester obtainable by reacting
[0013] - a polyol selected from ethylene glycol, 1 ,2-propylene glycol, 1 ,3-propylene glycol, 1 ,2-butylene glycol, 1,3- butylene glycol, 2,3-butylene glycol, neopentyl glycol, trimethylol propane, trimethylol ethane, pentaerythritol, and dipentaerythritol; - a diacid selected from aliphatic C3-C12 dicarboxylic acids;
[0014] - a linear monoacid selected from linear aliphatic C6-C22 monocarboxylic acids; and
[0015] - a branched monoacid selected from branched aliphatic C6-C12 monocarboxylic acids.
[0016] The objects were also solved by a hydraulic fluid as defined in any of the preceeding claims, where the hydraulic fluid comprises a complex ester obtainable by reacting
[0017] - the polyol selected from ethylene glycol, 1 ,2-propylene glycol, 1 ,3-propylene glycol, 1 ,2-butylene glycol, 1,3- butylene glycol, 2,3-butylene glycol, neopentyl glycol, trimethylol propane, trimethylol ethane, pentaerythritol, and dipentaerythritol;
[0018] - the diacid selected from aliphatic C3-C12 dicarboxylic acids;
[0019] - the linear monoacid selected from linear aliphatic C6-C22 monocarboxylic acids; and
[0020] - the branched monoacid selected from branched aliphatic C6-C12 monocarboxylic acids.
[0021] Typically, the hydraulic system comprises
[0022] - a pump for pressurizing the hydraulic fluid,
[0023] - a control unit for controlling an oil pressure, a flow direction, or a flow rate of a pumped hydraulic fluid; and
[0024] - a conversion unit for converting a controlled hydraulic pressure of the hydraulic fluid into mechanical power.
[0025] The pump is driven, for example, by an electric motor to generate a hydraulic pressure by pumping the hydraulic fluid from a first oil tank. The pump may be a hydraulic pump, such as a hydraulic gear pump, a hydraulic screw pump, a hydraulic vane pump, a hydraulic plunger pump. The hydraulic fluid pressure generated by the pump is, for example, 5 to 50 MPa.
[0026] The control unit includes, for example, a pressure control valve for controlling the hydraulic pressure, a directional control valve for controlling the flow direction, or a flow control valve for controlling the flow rate. The pressure control valve, for example, adjusts the hydraulic fluid pressure generated by the pump, and allows a part of the hydraulic fluid to escape to a second oil tank when the pressure measured by a pressure gauge reaches a certain value or more. The pressure control valve may be a relief valve, a pressure reducing valve, an unloader valve, a sequence valve, a counterbalance valve. The direction control valve is composed of, for example, an electromagnetic switching valve and a check valve. The flow control valve may be, for example, a throttle valve or a flow regulating valve. In these valves, a deceleration valve may be incorporated.
[0027] The conversion unit usually converts the hydraulic pressure to the power, for example, according to the flow rate controlled by the flow control valve. The conversion unit may be a hydraulic cylinder, a hydraulic motor or the like. Through control of the flow rate of the hydraulic fluid by the flow control valve, the movement speed of a hydraulic cylinder, a hydraulic motor or the like can be adjustable. The hydraulic cylinder may be of a single acting type, a double acting type, a special type or the like. The hydraulic motor may be a gear motor, a vane motor, a plunger motor, or the like.
[0028] The hydraulic fluid can be pressurized for example from 5 to 50 Mpa.
[0029] The complex ester is obtainable by reacting the polyol, the diacid, the linear monoacid and the branched monoacid, for example by an esterification reaction which may be catalyzed by esterification catalyst.
[0030] The esterification is typically carried out at a temperature range from 50 to 250°C. Water formed in the esterification can be removed by common methods, e.g. by distillation.
[0031] The esterification catalysts can be mineral acids (like sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid), organic sulfonic acids (like methanesulfonic acid and p-toluenesulfonic acid) and amphoteric catalysts (like titanium-, tin(ll), tin(IV) or zirconium compounds like tetraalkoxytitanium compounds, e.g. tetrabutoxytitanium, tin(ll) oxalate, and tin(IV)oxide). When the esterification catalyst is selected from organic acids or mineral acids, the esterification is preferably carried out at a temperature range from 50 to 160°C. If the esterification catalyst is selected from amphoteric catalysts, the esterification is preferably carried out at a temperature range from 100 to 250°C, more preferably from 120°C to 200°C.

[0113] ADA: adipic acid
[0114] INA: 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid (commercially available from BASF SE)
[0115] C12: lauric acid ( 99%)
[0116] Example 1 - Preparation of complex esters
[0117] The complex ester A was prepared by the general method as follows with the amounts of starting materials given in Table 1 :
[0118] A one-liter three necked flask was filled with adipic acid (6,95 g), trimethylolpropane (105,6 g), 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid (238,2 g) and lauric acid (149,25 g). Stannous oxalate (Reaxis® C160, 0.28 % by weight) was added to this reaction mixture.
[0119] Nitrogen was bubbled through the mixture and the mixture was heated to 140 °C for a period of 3 hours while stirring. Then the mixture was heated to 200 °C for a period of 5 hours. A vacuum was gradually applied. When an acid value measured according to ISO 660 of below 0,5 mgKOH / g was reached, the remaining acids were distilled of by applying a vacuum at 230 °C. The mixture was cooled to 90 °C and water was added. The liquid reaction mixture was dried by applying a vacuum at 130 °C and filtered.
[0120] The other Esters B to K were prepared accordingly with the amounts listed in Table 1. Example 2 - Application properties of complex esters
[0121] The application properties of the complex esters were analyzed and are summarized in Table 1 .
[0122] The kinematic viscosity at 40 °C (KV40) or at 100 °C (KV100) was determined according to ASTM D 445. The viscosity index (VI) was calculated based on the KV40 and KV100, e.g. according to ASTM D2270. The pour point (PP) was determined according to ASTM D97.
[0123] Table 1. Composition and properties of complex esters a) Comparative example
[0124] The data demonstrated that the complex esters in Examples A to G have excellent low temperature propierties for hydraulic fluids as show by their low pour points. At the same time their viscosity index remained at a high level.
[0125] For comparison, when the linear monoacid lauric acid was omitted, then the pour point increased and the viscosity index decreased (Examples H, I and K).
[0126] Example 3 - Reduced Friction
[0127] The complex esters B and F from Example and and the comparative ester K were tested in the MTM (MiniTraction Machine) instrument using the so-called traction test mode. In this mode, the friction coefficient is measured at a constant mean speed of over a range of slide roll ratios (SRR) to give the traction curve. The disc is held in a bath contain-ing a test lubricant so that the contact between the ball and flat is fully immersed. The ball shaft is aligned with respect to the disk so as to prevent spin in the contact and the slide-roll ratio is controlled independently by driving both the ball and the disk with separate motors. The disc and ball used for the experiments were made of steel (AISI 52100), with a hardness of 750 HV and Ra < 0,02 pm. The diameter was 45,0 mm and 19,0 mm for the disc and the ball respectively. The tractions curves were run 38 Newton, 2000 mm / s speed and 70 °C temperature. The slide-roll ratio (“SRR") was varied from 0 to 50 percent and the traction coefficient (“T.C.”) measured.
[0128] The resulting diagram is shown in Figure 1.
[0129] The continuous line represents the data for the inventive Ester B, the doted line represents the data for the inventive Ester E, and the dashed line the data for the comparative Ester K. This demonstrated the improved friction properties of the inventive complex ester.
[0130] Example 4 - Hydraulic fluid formulations with complex esters
[0131] The complex esters A and C from Table 1 were be used to prepare the hydraulic fluid formulations listed in Table 2 and their properties analyzed. The thermal oxidative stability "RPVOT” was tested according to ASTM D2272. The Esters B to G can be formulated the same manner as hydraulic oil formulation.
