Abstract
Description
[0001] A COSMETOLOGICAL OINTMENT COMPOSITION TO REPAIR SKIN LESIONS AND ITS PREPARATION PROCESS THEREOF
[0002] FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0003] The present invention relates to the field of cosmetology and dermatology, specifically to the development of therapeutic ointments designed for the repair and treatment of skin lesions. More particularly, the invention pertains to a composition and preparation process for a skin-repairing ointment that leverages the beneficial properties of Malva sylvestris.
[0004] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0005] Over the years, the world has witnessed a surge in the acceptance and popularity of Traditional and Alternative / Complementary Medicine (CAM). Many factors contribute to this growth. In numerous regions, especially the rural areas, the availability of physicians remains constrained mainly to urban sectors, making CAM a practical and affordable healthcare alternative. Simultaneously, the global telecom revolution, spearheaded by advancements in mobile telephony and propelled further by Artificial Intelligence, has democratized access to information about CAM's potential benefits.
[0006] This rising tide of interest in traditional medicine is not a mere public whim. The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially recognized the significance of Traditional and Alternative / Complementary Medicine, a validation evident in the WHO Strategy on Traditional Medicine 2014-2023. As a result, many Asian and Middle Eastern nations have begun to embed traditional medicine into their public health policies. The global shift toward an integrative health approach has also led to the inclusion of traditional and complementary medical techniques within mainstream healthcare facilities.
[0007] Historical data corroborates the worldwide embrace of CAM. By the close of the 20th century, significant segments of the global population, influenced by regional culture, economic stature, and other factors, had already sought refuge in CAM. For instance, the WHO reported CAM utilization rates of 80% in Africa, 71% in Chile, and 40% in Colombia. The earlier parts of the 20th century also documented rising CAM popularity in developed nations, with usage rates highlighting 50% of Australians, 70% of Canadians, 42% of Americans, and 75% of the French population turning to CAM for healthcare.
[0008] One particular area of concern, which demands innovative healthcare solutions, is dermatology. The global population is grappling with a rise in dermatological issues, a trend confirmed by the WHO's statistical observations. Responding to this need, we have embarked on research to develop a cosmetological cream harnessing the potential of Malva Sylvestris. This plant, native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia, and subsequently introduced to Chile during colonization, has a storied history of medicinal usage. Notably, the Swiss immigrants who settled in Araucania between 1883 and 1890 often turned to Malva Sylvestris for addressing various ailments, particularly skin conditions. They employed various forms of the plant, from tisanes for ingestion to dressings prepared from the plant's extracts.
[0009] The rhythms of life and the consequent damage to the skin are typical of an increase in the population's life expectancy in general, along with the aggressions suffered by the skin due to multiple circumstances caused by external agents. As a way to neutralize this skin aging, in the year 2000, it was discovered that this could be achieved by extracting an active ingredient based on Malva Silvestre leaf and other compounds. Also, from this discovery, the skin could be treated by stimulating the synthesis of proteoglycans to combat skin aging (France Patent No. FR2814070A1, 2000), stimulating natural mitogenic growth, stimulating the synthesis of structural proteins and cellular metabolism, reinforcing the barrier effect of the skin, and thus increasing its protection against biological and environmental damage.
[0010] In another prior art solution (W02008055107A2), a composition containing Cotinus Coggygria extract is disclosed and used in treating hemorrhoids. These are caused because the collagen and elastin that support the anorectal region weaken and break down, causing hemorrhoid and cushions to lose their support and shift. Biochemical studies have detected an upregulation of elastin-degrading enzymes such as MMP-2 and MMP-9 in hemorrhoidal tissue that may explain the degraded support network. Early hemorrhoid treatments alleviate symptoms, usually involving retinol, which increases collagen in the affected area. In severe cases, hemorrhoids must be surgically removed. However, Cotinus Coggygria extracts are typically used as an antimicrobial treatment. This patent reports the unexpected discovery that combining Cotinus Coggygria with other extracts or agents effectively prevents and reduces the risk and severity of hemorrhoid symptoms.
[0011] The composition of wild mallow, Matricaria chamomile, and Cotinus Coggygria was tested in humans using the PBL test. The response to PHA activation and cytokine secretion demonstrates that dose-dependently, secretion is inhibited in the presence of this extract, thus predicting its anti-inflammatory potential and proving its effectiveness against this condition.
[0012] Building on this historical context and backed by a dedicated research team, the present study aims to systematically identify, prepare, and evaluate an ointment composition with Malva Sylvestris as the chief component. The end goal is to produce a cream capable of treating various skin conditions, packaged in a user-friendly dermo-cosmetic container. The overarching vision is to offer a product grounded in traditional knowledge, supported by modern research, and designed for the global populace facing dermatological challenges.

Then, storing the storage container containing the mixture in a refrigerator at a temperature between 2° and 8° Celsius after reaching room temperature. Then, soaking crushed and mixed leftovers and decanting their properties. Then, exposing the mixture to room temperature after three weeks of resting and decanting and filtering the mixture to separate the solid material from the liquid. Thereafter, percolating the rest of the bagasse forcefully through a pressure tool to obtain Malva extract.
[0049] In another embodiment, particles that are part of the substance are stirred from time to time during cooking to change their position disorderly and become well-mixed
[0050] In another embodiment, process 100 further comprises packaging the ointment into the selected portable containers within 15 minutes. Then, obtaining the solidified state inside each recipient as a consequence of an exothermic process. In another embodiment, the prepared cosmetological ointment of Malva sylvestris is preferably applied twice a day on an affected area.
[0051] In another embodiment, process 100 further comprises selecting inorganic packaging material, resistant to handling and storage and capable of containing, protecting, and operating the desired product.
[0052] Figure 2 illustrates Table 1 depicts the operationalization of variables in accordance with an embodiment of the present disclosure. The purpose here is to quantify and qualify the variable, after cooking for a specific time and once it reaches an acceptable degree of high viscosity, which enables it to remain in a solid state inside a glass container and at an ambient temperature of up to 30° Celsius.
[0053] Olive oil is obtained from the fruit of the olive tree, in which almost a third part of the pulp is oil, commonly known as the olive. Among its properties is that it is very rich in vitamin E (antioxidant) and phytosterols (cholesterol reducer). It is a great source of monounsaturated fat, mainly oleic acid. Olive oil helps reduce total cholesterol levels in the blood and prevents oxidation. Since ancient times it has been extracted from a simple pressure exerted by a mill. Also, its use has been very varied, such as medicinal, religious, cosmetic, food, and fuel, among others. At first, the raw olive presents a level of bitterness due to the phenolic compounds, so a maceration process is necessary, all this before being finished as olive oil.
[0054] Balneum Mariae: Commonly known as "Bain-Marie," it is a method of millenary use to heat a specific solid or liquid substance, uniformly and slowly, for a specific time according to the inventor's technique, by immersing the vessel containing the substance in another larger vessel with water, which is brought to a boiling point of 100° Celsius. In the works of the Christian writer Zosimos of Panapolis, this technique dates from the 1st to the 3rd centuries A.D. and is described and associated with Mary the Jewess, considered the first alchemist in the history of humankind. She is credited with the invention of various types of chemical apparatus. This method (Balneum Mariae) is widely used by the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food, and canning industries today.
[0055] Beeswax: Wax is an animal secretion that melliferous bees secrete as a liquid voluntarily and whenever they need it through the ceriferous glands, especially the young workers. The wax scales come out from between the rings of the abdomen, from where using their hind legs, the bees carry the wax scales to their jaws and chew them, impregnating them with saliva and adding small amounts of pollen and propolis, making them more malleable. Upon contact with air, the wax hardens and forms small wax flakes on the underside of the bee. Mallow Extract: The leaves and flakes of the plant, after being collected and separated from the stems and flowers, must go through a process of dehydration and drying in the open air, away from sunlight. Afterward, they must be chopped or semi-grinded to start the maceration process of its bagasse along with the olive oil to soften it and extract from it its soluble parts, where the highest concentration of the active ingredients of the plant is found. This process takes more than 21 days.
[0056] Extract quality: After the drying process, which lasts between 5 to 10 days depending on the climate and its dryness, the leaves lose up to 80% of their original capacity (5: 1 ratio) because of the natural dehydration process. However, these dried extracts have a higher concentration than the original plant and the most active ingredients. Subsequently, to improve the safety and efficacy of the dried extracts, they should be subjected to a standardization process and thus achieve greater uniformity in their therapeutic effects.
[0057] Mallow maceration: The maceration process itself starts with the decoction, and olive oil is used as a solvent. The rest of the leaves and bagasse of Malva sylvestre are mixed with the solvent, and the whole is brought to a boiling point of 100° Celsius at Balneum Mariae for an estimated time of 60 minutes and then cooled and stored in a refrigerator at a temperature between 2° and 8° Celsius. After three weeks of resting and decanting, it is exposed again to room temperature, and the filtration process is started to separate the solid material from the liquid. The rest of the bagasse is percolated with force through a pressure tool. The macerated product is ready to pass to the final stage and prepare the ointment.
[0058] Ointment (Liniment) of Mallow: The process continues after the maceration to the preparation and transformation less thick of the cream. The paste resulting from the maceration is mixed in determined proportions with the beeswax. A new cooking process is initiated at Balneum Mariae in boiling at 100° Celsius for a time of at least 60 minutes. After that, it is cooled for a few minutes (15'), and as a consequence of an exothermic process, the solidification state is obtained.
[0059] Figure 3 illustrates a process flow of preparation of the extract in accordance with an embodiment of the present disclosure. Flowchart for the elaboration of the ointment convertible into mallow cream based on a combination of elements, among which are: Malva sylvestris extract, olive oil, beeswax, and water.
[0060] Preparation of the extract
[0061] Reception of raw material: After collecting the raw material Malva sylvestris, an organoleptic review of the raw material (color, smell, and texture) is carried out, and the raw material must come from locations in the Malleco Valley.
[0062] Selection and Classification: Leaves in poor condition will be removed, i.e., those with mechanical damage or other homogeneity defects that minimize or reduce their extractive capacity and richness. Drying: The leaves are spread evenly on a smooth platform so that they do not overlap, with the aim that the drying process is harmonious, in the shade and not exposed to direct sunlight, for a period that can last between 5 to 10 days, depending on the time of year and the humidity of the air.
[0063] Grinding: After drying, the solid material resulting from drying is ground (shredded), taking care that it is not reduced to powder.
[0064] Component preparation: In this stage, an organic olive oil that meets traceability standards is identified and selected, according to the food safety standards for the population, as required for food products exportable from Chile to European markets (EU, 2008).
[0065] Portions: Weights are determined using a scale according to the formula for preparing the Mallow paste, both the crushed product of Malva sylvestris itself and of the olive oil.
[0066] Mallow Paste: Mixed in a pot the crushed product and the olive oil; and proceed to cook it in Balneum Mariae for at least one hour at 100° Celsius and over low heat. The particles that are part of the substance are stirred from time to time so that they change their position disorderly and become well-mixed. After this, it is left to cool at room temperature in a storage container.
[0067] Maceration Process: After reaching room temperature, it is stored in a refrigerator at a temperature between 2° and 8° Celsius. Therefore, the crushed and mixed leftovers are soaked, and their properties are decanted.
[0068] Obtaining the Mallow Extract: After three weeks of resting and decanting, it is again exposed to room temperature. The filtration process is initiated to separate the solid material from the liquid. The rest of the bagasse is percolated forcefully through a pressure tool. This is how the Malva extract is obtained.
[0069] Figure 4 illustrates a process flow of obtaining Mallow cream in accordance with an embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0070] Inspection of the Mallow Extract: After obtaining the extract, it should be inspected to ensure that it maintains uniformity in its content, that it presents similarity and continuity as a whole, and that the dynamic viscosity is maintained.
[0071] Component preparation: In this stage, organic beeswax that meets traceability standards is identified and selected, according to food safety criteria for the population, as required for food products exportable from Chile to European markets (EU, 2008).
[0072] Portions: New grammages are determined using a scale according to the formula of the Malva cream preparation, now incorporating the beeswax according to the portion of Malva extract. Elaboration of the Mallow Ointment (Liniment): pour the mallow extract into a pot in conjunction with the portion of beeswax and start a new cooking process at Balneum Mariae with a desirable boiling of 100° Celsius for a time of at least 60 minutes. Subsequently, it is left to cool.
[0073] Selection of the packaging: The choice of packaging of inorganic material, is resistant to handling and storage, and capable of containing, protecting, and operating the desired product.
[0074] Packaging of the ointment: Within the following 15 minutes (15'), the liquid material should be poured into the selected portable containers. Then, as a consequence of an exothermic process, the solidified state is obtained inside each recipient. The product is finished.
[0075] Figure 5 illustrates Table 2 depicts materials and method in accordance with an embodiment of the present disclosure.

Before starting treatment with Malva sylvestris cream for three and six weeks, this person used regularly and for a long time a cream known as CALMURID Hydrocortisone 1% Topical Lotion 100ml, which is recommended for "local treatment of inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of dermatoses that respond to corticosteroids. Treatment of inflammatory and allergic skin alterations. Seborrheic dermatitis, pruritus, erythema, local edema, eczema, desquamation, and psoriasis. Intended to combat swelling, heat, redness, and pain" . However, before using CALMURID Hydrocortisone 1%, this person had unsuccessful and prolonged treatment with applications of the medication EPIDUO FORTE GEL.30G gel, which is recommended because it is known as "anti-acne for topical use, i.e., it is used for the treatment of acne vulgaris, in the presence of comedones (blackheads and pimples), numerous papules and pustules (inflamed pimples)". Based on the good results, she stopped using both pharmaceutical products and continued with the product "Mallow Cream," which generated evident well-being.
[0083] In Case N° 2, before starting treatment with Malva sylvestris cream for three and six weeks, this person used a cleansing lotion as a substitute for soap daily and for a period of three months. The product is called "NEOLUCID," which is recommended for use on sensitive, delicate, irritated, or oily skin. It is described as "suitable for all skin types (dry, sensitive, oily, combination or atopic). The high tolerance and acid pH make this lotion a special dermo-cleanser for gentle and deep cleansing of sensitive, irritated skin or even skin that is compromised by dermatological treatments. Cleansing lotion for skin care". Based on the good results, the person stopped using the pharmaceutical product and continued with the "Malva Cream" product, given the well-being that this cream generated.
[0084] Case N°3 is a person suffering from severe damage and permanent skin erosions on the left cheek area of his face. Before starting treatment with Malva sylvestris cream for three and six weeks, he used and applied regularly every day and for more than a year a gel called CICAPLAST Gel B5 Repairing Gel, whose primary function is "to accelerate epidermal repair, helps to heal post-surgical, dermatological and aesthetic interventions. Auxiliary in epidermal renewal, protective and soothing effect". Based on the good results, she stopped using the pharmaceutical product and continued with the product "Mallow Cream," given the healing and repairing effect of this product.
[0085] Case N° 4, before starting treatment with Malva sylvestris cream for three and six weeks, used and applied regularly every day and for three years, an extra moisturizing cream called LUBRIDERM (Family Size 750ml, 24 Hrs.). This product is applied daily, with soft massages all over the body, especially on the hands, given the damage the person had on her skin. This product is characterized by the following ingredients: "Water, mineral oil, glycerin, caprylic or capric triglyceride, stearic acid, cetyl alcohol, phenoxyethanol, Cetearyl alcohol, dimethicone, carbomer, ceteareth-20, sodium hydroxide, sodium citrate, methylparaben, propylparaben, fragrance, citric acid, ethylparaben, panthenol". Based on the good results obtained with "Malva Cream" on the hands, the person continued to use it as a replacement for LUBRIDERM.
[0086] In Case N° 5, before starting treatment with Malva sylvestris cream for three weeks, this person used and applied regularly every day and for several years a topical hair lotion called SALICORT, lotion 30ml, which is aimed, among others, at patients who have psoriasis, which is used for the "Topical treatment of dermatoses of the scalp and other hairy areas that respond to corticosteroid therapy". Based on the good results, the product "Mallow Cream" continued to be applied on a complimentary basis, given this product's cleansing and repairing effect, which is very clearly shown in Figure E.
[0087] The formula for the preparation of the cream
[0088] The composition of Malva sylvestris will be presented below, based on the percentages of each of the ingredients used for its preparation, according to the following:
