Description

Synthesis and use of a zeolitic material having the ITH framework type with tuned aluminum distribution in the zeolite frameworkTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of a zeolitic material as well as to a zeolitic material having the ITH framework structure type as such and as obtainable from the inventive process. Furthermore, the present invention relates to the use of the inventive zeolitic materials in specific applications.

[0002] INTRODUCTION

[0003] Because of its unique three dimensional 9 × 10 × 10-membered ring pore structure (aperture size of 4.0 × 4.8, 4.8 × 5.1, and  ) , ITH zeolite has attracted much attention. It could be prepared in the form of silicate and borosilicate but it remained difficult to synthesize the form of aluminosilicate due to competitive growth of EUO zeolite when aluminum exists in the syn-thesis gel. In particular, ITH zeolites show excellent performance in the catalytic cracking and methanol-to-olefins (MTO) reaction.

[0004] R. et al. disclose a preparation method of Al-ITQ-13, wherein hexamethonium cati-ons were used as structure directing agent. ITQ-13 zeolites are disclosed therein being pre-pared by exchanging boron or germanium with aluminum.

[0005] L. Li et al. disclose in Journal of Catalysis Al-Ge-ITQ-13 zeolites with varying contents of Ger-manium.

[0006] A. Corma et al. disclose in Angewandte Chemie International Edition a study on ITQ-13 zeolites. To solve the problem brought with germanium species, A. Corma et al. also disclosed therein a post-synthesis method by alumination of borosilicate ITH zeolite to form aluminosilicate ITH zeolite.

[0007] WO 2021 / 052466 A1 discloses a process for the preparation of a zeolitic material having the ITH framework structure.

[0008] T. Liang et al. disclose catalysts with a ZSM-5 framework structure for the conversion of metha-nol to olefins (MTO) and a preparation method thereof, wherein the siting of Al in the zeolite framework is influenced by the selection of the silicon source.

[0009] S. He et al. disclose catalysts with an ITQ-13 framework structure for the conversion of metha-nol to olefins (MTO) and a preparation method thereof, wherein the Al distribution is influenced by the addition of potassium.

[0010] Thus, an ongoing need remains for an improved synthesis of new zeolitic materials with unique physical and chemical characteristics. Furthermore, framework Al constitutes  sites within the zeolite framework, wherein the positioning of these  sites influences reactivi-ty and selectivity of the zeolite framework. However, adjusting the Al distribution in the ITH framework is difficult, because isolated Al species are energetically favored at the sites of chan-nel intersections, compared to sites in sinusoidal and straight channels. In this regard, the need remains to improve direct synthesis of a zeolitic material having the ITH framework structure type in view of the distribution of Al in the framework, especially wherein the Al distribution in sinusoidal and straight channels is increased.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0011] It was therefore an object of the present invention to provide a new zeolitic material, wherein the Al distribution in channels of the ITH zeolite framework is increased, and a novel method for its synthesis. Furthermore, it was the object of the present invention to provide a new zeolitic mate-rial for catalytic applications, in particular for heterogeneous catalysis, and more specifically for the conversion of oxygenates to olefins.

[0012] Thus, it has surprisingly been found that a zeolitic material of the ITH framework structure type having specific properties may be directly synthesized using a zeolitic material having an LTA-type framework structure, whereby the zeolitic material displays a specific distribution of Al posi-tions in the ITH zeolite framework. Surprisingly, the zeolitic material having the ITH framework structure type according to the present invention demonstrates considerably improved lifetime and specific selectivities when used as catalyst in the methanol-to-olefin (MTO) reaction. In par-ticular, the zeolitic material of the present invention demonstrates improved lifetime compared to that of conventional ITH zeolites prepared from non-zeolitic Al sources, wherein the Al sites are mainly located in the intersection cavities of the framework.

[0013] In particular, it has unexpectedly been found that the zeolitic materials of the present invention display unique properties in catalysis, and in particular in the conversion of oxygenates to ole-fins, wherein in the conversion of methanol to olefins increased C3 selectivities may be achieved.

[0014] Therefore, the present invention relates to a zeolitic material having the ITH framework structure type, preferably obtainable and / or obtained according to the process for the preparation of a zeolitic material having the ITH framework structure type according to any one of the particular and preferred embodiments disclosed herein,

[0304] As a typical run for synthesis of LTA-ITH-50 zeolite, 75.0 mg LTA zeolite (Si / Al=1, Nankai Uni-versity Catalyst Co., Ltd) and 10.67 g of organic template solution (OSDA, 0.36 mol / L OH-) were mixed together. Then, 3.14 g TEOS (tetraethyl orthosilicate, 99%, Aladdin Chemical Co., Ltd) was added under stirring condition. After stirring the mixture for another 5 h until the com-plete hydrolysis of TEOS, 0.05 g of siliceous ITH zeolite seeds prepared in accordance with Reference Example 9, and 0.190 mL of HF (40 weight-%; 3.3 mmol; AR; Aladdin Chemical Co., Ltd. ) were added. After the partial evaporation of water from the starting gel, the final molar  composition of the mixture was 1.0 SiO2 : 0.01 Al2O3 : 0.125 OSDA : 0.19 HF : 3 H2O. The ob-tained mixture was transferred into a Teflon-lined autoclave and heated at 175 ℃ for 4 days under rotation condition (50 rpm) . After complete crystallization, the solid zeolite product was filtered, washed with deionized water, dried at 100 ℃ and calcined at 550 ℃ for 5 h. The ob-tained zeolite was ion-exchanged with 1 M NH4Cl solution at 80 ℃ for 12 h twice and calcined at 550 ℃ for 5h and the H-form LTA-ITH-50 zeolite product was obtained.

[0305] Table 1: Chemical compositions, textual parameters and acid properties of H-form LTA-ITH and C-ITH zeolites.

[0306] Example 2: Synthesis of a zeolitic material having the ITH framework structure type (LTA-ITH-75 zeolite)

[0307] LTA-ITH-75 was obtained in accordance with the preparation method of Example 1, but the amount of LTA zeolite was 0.045 g.

[0308] Example 3: Synthesis of a zeolitic material having the ITH framework structure type (LTA-ITH-100 zeolite)

[0309] LTA-ITH-100 was obtained in accordance with the preparation method of Example 1, but the amount of LTA zeolite was 0.030 g.

[0310] Comparative Example 1: Synthesis of conventional ITH zeolite (C-ITH-50)

[0311] In a typical run for synthesizing C-ITH zeolite, 0.024 g boehmite and 10.67 g of OSDA solution (0.36 mol / L OH-) were mixed. Then, 3.25 g TEOS was added under stirring conditions. After stirring the mixture for another 5 h until the complete hydrolysis of TEOS, 0.05 g of siliceous ITH  zeolite seeds and 0.19 mL of HF were added. After the partial evaporation of water from the starting gel, the final molar composition of the mixture was 1.0 SiO2 : 0.01 Al2O3 : 0.125 OSDA : 0.19 HF : 3 H2O. Then, the mixture was transferred into a Teflon-lined autoclave and heated at 175 ℃ for 4 days under rotation conditions (50 rpm) . After the complete crystallization, the solid product was filtered, washed with deionized water, dried at 100 ℃ and calcined at 550 ℃ for 5 h.The obtained product was named as C-ITH-50, where 50 stands for the Si / Al ratio in the starting gel.

[0312] Comparative Example 2: Synthesis of conventional ITH-zeolite (C-ITH-75)

[0313] C-ITH-75 was obtained in accordance with Comparative Example 1, but the amount of boehm-ite was 0.018 g.

[0314] Comparative Example 3: Synthesis of conventional ITH-zeolite (C-ITH-100)

[0315] C-ITH-100 was obtained in accordance with Comparative Example 1, but the amount of boehm-ite was 0.012 g.

[0316] Reference Example 9: Deconvolution of the 27Al MAS solid state NMR spectra

[0317] Table 2 presents theoretical data for chemical shifts of Al species at various T sites in the ITH framework. T5 and T7 sites are located in the channel intersections, which are beneficial for the formation of aromatic intermediates, leading to the formation of more ethylene and aromatics. T1 and T9 sites are positioned in the straight and sinusoidal channels.

[0318] Table 2: Chemical shifts of Al at different T sites in ITH.

[0319] Based thereon, the 27Al solid state MAS NMR spectra of the Examples 1-3 and Comparative Examples 1-3 were deconvoluted into four peaks which are attributed to different T sites. T1 and T9 sites located at the straight channel and sinusoidal channel and T5 and T7 sites located at the intersection channel.

[0320] Surprisingly, increasing the Si / Al ratios in the initial gels from 50 to 100, Al species in the C-ITH zeolites are mainly located the channel intersections (from 52-60%, see Table 3) , while Al spe-cies in the LTA-ITH zeolites prefer to enter sinusoidal and straight channel at relatively low Al content (at 62.8%at LTA-ITH-100, see Table 3) . This difference should be assigned to the use of LTA zeolite with zeolite building units as an Al source in the starting gels, which efficiently adjust the Al locations in the ITH framework.

[0321] Table 3: Deconvolutional data of the 27Al solid state MAS NMR spectra of H-form ITH zeolites.

[0322] Further, as may be seen in Figures 2-3, the Al distribution at different sites of the ITH zeolite framework is dependent on the Si / Al ratio of the ITH zeolite framework. With increasing Si / Al ratio, the content of Al in sinusoidal and straight channels (AlS) of inventive Examples 1-3 in-creased up to 62.8%for LTA-ITH-100.

[0323] Example 4: 1-Hexene cracking

[0324] 1-hexene cracking was carried out in a fixed reactor with a diameter of 8 mm under atmospheric pressure. The zeolite sample (100 mg, 20-40 mesh) was first activated in nitrogen at 500 ℃ for 2 h and then cooled to reaction temperature (450 ℃) in a flow of nitrogen (30 mL / min) . Nitrogen mixed with 1-hexene continuously passes through the fixed bed (19.2%Vol., 1-hexene / N2) . The  product was analyzed by on-line gas chromatography with FID detector using HP-PLOT-Q col-umn.

[0325] Table 4: Catalytic Data in 1-hexene cracking over the LTA-ITH-100 and C-ITH-100 Zeolites

[0326] C2=, C3= and C4= were the selectivity (%) of ethene, propylene, and butene respectively.

[0327] The catalytic performance of 1-hexene cracking over the LTA-ITH-100 and C-ITH-100 zeolites is displayed in Table 4. LTA-ITH-100 had a propene selectivity of 40.4%and C4= / C3= ratio of 0.32, while C-ITH-100 gave a propene selectivity of 35.9%and C4= / C3= ratio of 0.43. These results indicate that the monomolecular process is more dominant for LTA-ITH-100 than that for C-ITH-100, confirming that the LTA-ITH-100 has more Al distributed in channels than the C-ITH-100, in good agreement with the results obtained from 27Al solid state MAS NMR spectroscopy.

[0328] Example 5: Catalytic testing –Methanol-to-olefin reaction

[0329] A methanol-to-olefin (MTO) reaction was carried out at 480 ℃ and under atmospheric pressure (101.325 Pa) in a fixed reactor with a diameter of 8 mm. A zeolite sample (500 mg, 20-40 mesh) was pretreated in flowing nitrogen at 500 ℃ for 2 h and then cooled down to reaction tempera-ture (480 ℃) in a flow of nitrogen (30 mL / min) . The methanol was continuously injected into the catalyst bed by a pump with a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 150 h-1. The products were analyzed by on-line gas chromatography (Agilent 6890N) with FID detector using HP-PLOT-Q column.

[0330] The results of the catalytic testing are shown in Table 5 below and in Figure 4.

[0331] Table 5. Catalytic data of various ITH zeolites in MTO at high methanol velocity.

[0332] LTA-ITH-50-100 samples showed improved propene selectivity compared to C-ITH-50-100 samples with comparable Si / Al ratio of the ITH zeolitic framework, and also an improved con-version. Further, the propene selectivity of inventive Examples 1-3 increased with the Si / Al ratio of the ITH zeolitic framework.

[0333] As may be seen in Figure 4, inventive Examples 1-3 show improved catalyst lifetime compared to comparative Examples 1-3. LTA-ITH-100 shows 100%methanol conversion for ~55 h on stream, while C-ITH-100 shows 100%methanol conversion only up to ~45 h on stream.
