Description

[0001] title

[0002] Product presentation device with display device

[0003] Description

[0004] Technical field

[0005] The invention relates to a product presentation device with a display device.

[0006] background

[0007] US Pat. No. 10,504,389 B2 discloses a product display device with a display device known as an interactive kiosk. This known product display device has several shelves designed for displaying goods. An LCD screen is installed above the top shelf, which can be used to display electronically changeable information about the goods. The kiosk can be mounted in various retail structures as required.

[0008] The known product display device has the disadvantage that - analogous to conventional shelves, which have an electronic shelf label (known in technical jargon as an Electronic Shelf Label and abbreviated as ESL) with an ESL screen on their front - the preferred viewing direction for the electronically changeable information is predominantly a direction normal to the ESL screen. In the case of the LCD screen, viewing is possible from a lateral position, in front of the screen plane and to the side of the screen. However, the perceptibility of the information decreases noticeably the flatter the angle between the screen plane and the viewing direction, because this is dictated by technical aspects of the LCD screen and results in an unfavorable perspective.

[0009] The invention therefore aims to provide a product display device that avoids the aforementioned problems. Summary of the invention

[0010] This object is achieved by a product presentation device according to claim 1. The subject matter of the invention is therefore a product presentation device for presenting goods, which has: at least two electronic display devices which are designed to display electronically changeable information, in particular product and / or price information, and at least one shelf compartment which is laterally delimited by shelf compartment edges, wherein at least one of the electronic display devices is positioned along two different shelf compartment edges per shelf compartment edge.

[0011] This has the advantage that there is no longer just one optimal viewing direction for viewing the displayed information. Rather, the information can now be clearly perceived from a variety of optimal viewing directions. These different optimal viewing directions result from the edge orientation of the various shelf edges to which the display devices are aligned. Specifically, the information displayed by each of the display devices can be optimally viewed from a position in front of the respective shelf edge where the respective electronic display device is located. By attaching it to the respective shelf edge, sales-promoting information for a single product displayed on the shelf can be presented in an optimally perceptible manner for viewing from a variety of directions.

[0012] Further, particularly advantageous embodiments and developments of the invention emerge from the dependent claims and the following description.

[0013] The information presented by the various display devices can be identical or different. Especially when the information is identical, it can be optimally perceived from a wide variety of directions.

[0014] As mentioned, the merchandise display device has at least one shelf compartment. This shelf compartment is attached to a mechanically supporting structure of the merchandise display device. This supporting structure can be a wall to which the shelf compartment is attached. One or more columns can also be used to attach the shelf compartment, such as a so-called perforated wall column, which has a wall with holes into which the shelf can be suspended.

[0015] The shelf compartment can have different shapes and therefore a different number of shelf edges. Not every shelf edge needs to be equipped with an electronic display device.

[0016] According to one embodiment, the goods presentation device has a rear wall from which the at least one shelf compartment protrudes. One of the shelf compartment edges faces the rear wall, and the shelf compartment has at least two freestanding shelf compartment edges, with at least one of the electronic display devices positioned along the at least two freestanding shelf compartment edges. The shape of the shelf compartment can thus be triangular or more than quadrangular. In this case, one of the shelf compartment edges is always not occupied by a display device but faces the rear wall.

[0017] According to a preferred embodiment, the at least one shelf compartment has a rectangular shape, in particular a square shape, and at least one of the electronic display devices per free-standing shelf compartment edge is positioned along the shelf compartment edge. This embodiment ensures that the information displayed with the aid of the display devices is clearly visible from a variety of directions, except directly from the direction of the rear wall. The displayed information can thus be easily perceived from a position directly in front of the goods presentation device as well as from a position to the side of the goods presentation device. Depending on the possible viewing angle predetermined by the display device (measured from a normal direction of the front of the display device), the information can even be easily perceived from a position slightly to the side and behind the rear wall.

[0018] According to a further embodiment, it can also be provided that the goods presentation device is designed without a rear wall, wherein the at least one shelf compartment has free-standing shelf edges all around and one of the electronic display devices is positioned along each of the shelf edges. Such a design can be created if, for example, supporting columns or supports are provided only at the outer corners of the shelf compartment. Such a design can also be created if, for example, a support is provided within the surface of the shelf compartment that supports the shelf compartment. If the free-standing shelf edges all around are equipped with display devices, the displayed information can be clearly recorded from any direction around the goods presentation device.

[0019] The goods presentation device can have an electronic shelf label as the electronic display device, in particular realized with the aid of an electrophoretic screen.

[0020] The electronic shelf label can be attached to a passive shelf rail that extends along the respective shelf edge and is intended for mechanically attaching the display device. In this case, the electronic shelf label itself is designed for radio-based communication, for example, to be supplied with the information to be displayed via an access point.

[0021] The electronic shelf label can be attached to an active shelf rail that extends along the respective shelf edge and is provided there for mounting the display device and for providing power and / or communication. Such an active shelf rail can have a wired interface to which the electronic shelf label is connected. A shelf rail controller integrated into the shelf rail controls communication with the electronic display device and provides a wireless interface to external communication devices, such as an access point.

[0022] Preferably, the respective shelf rail extends along the entire shelf edge. The individual electronic shelf labels are then attached individually or in a substantially flush row along the shelf rail.

[0023] Preferably, however, the merchandise presentation device comprises a video shelf rail as the electronic display device, which is designed to display video content. The video shelf rail extends essentially along the entire shelf edge. Thus, a single electronic device, namely the video shelf rail, allows for comprehensive information display essentially along the entire shelf edge, both as a still image display and / or as a video image display.

[0024] Since the housing shape of such a video shelf rail is usually square or angular, it has proven advantageous to provide a cylindrical segment-like element between adjacent video shelf rails of a shelf compartment. The cylindrical segment-like element's curved surface is shaped such that there is a continuous transition from the front of one video shelf rail to the front of the other. This allows the change in direction between the various shelf edges to be bridged by a continuously curved connecting surface between the adjacent video shelf rails. Visually and haptically disruptive edges and corners are thus eliminated along the perimeter of the shelf compartment.

[0025] It has proven particularly advantageous if the video shelf rail extends above the shelf compartment. This feature allows the video shelf rail to be used directly as a border for the shelf compartment.

[0026] However, in order to maintain a slim design for the video shelf rail on the one hand, and to prevent goods that significantly exceed the shelf rail in height from falling off, it has proven particularly advantageous for the shelf compartment to have a limiting element extending along the shelf compartment edge adjacent to its respective free-standing shelf compartment edge, preferably in the form of a limiting bracket, to delimit the space provided for the goods on the shelf compartment. This limiting element can be made of plastic or metal, for example, and thus has the necessary strength and durability. At the same time, this limiting element can be designed to be relatively narrow and visually unobtrusive in order to blend into the background as much as possible. It may also be provided that the boundary element is made of a transparent material, such as a transparent plastic or glass, in order to allow the view of the goods behind it as unobstructed as possible.

[0027] In order to detect the flow of people in front of the merchandise display device and / or the behavior of people present in front of the merchandise display device, it has proven advantageous for the merchandise display device to have at least one detection device, in particular designed as a radar sensor, for detecting the surroundings of the merchandise display device. This allows the effect of the information displayed by the display devices on the people in the vicinity of the merchandise display device to be detected. If a radar sensor is used, the detected data can be processed without any data protection concerns.

[0028] It has certainly proven particularly advantageous if the detection device is integrated into the display device and a detection area of the detection device is oriented essentially perpendicular to the front of the display device intended for viewing the electronically changeable information. In particular, this design allows direct conclusions to be drawn about the effect of the displayed information on people in front of the display device.

[0029] A further aspect concerns the electrical supply of the product display device. In this context, it has proven advantageous for the product display device to have a supply unit, in particular designed as a power supply unit, which is provided for supplying electrical power to electronic devices of the product display device, in particular the electronic display devices. Such a supply unit can also be formed, for example, by a replaceable battery, a rechargeable battery, or a battery that can be recharged, for example, using "power over WiFi."

[0030] To ensure optimal protection of the supply device against environmental influences, it has proven advantageous for the supply device to have device openings that are only directed downwards. In this context, "downward" essentially means oriented in the direction of gravity, or at least toward it. This ensures that both solid and liquid substances that might fall from above onto the supply device during real operation cannot penetrate the supply device through the openings, but are instead guided further downwards along its housing.

[0031] In order to ensure a safety distance to the bottom, i.e. below the supply device, from any liquid substances that may be located there, it has proven advantageous for the supply device to be arranged at a distance from the floor on which the goods display device is set up, in particular at a distance from a lowest shelf compartment.

[0032] It has also proven particularly advantageous to provide cabling for the electrical power supply of the electronic devices of the merchandise display device, which runs along a mechanically supporting structure of the merchandise display device. The only cable leading from the merchandise display device is a cable with a power plug for connecting a power supply unit designed as a supply unit to the mains power. The merchandise display device can therefore be supplied with electricity as easily as possible, particularly in business premises, where typically only a very limited number of mains power sockets are available. Furthermore, the cabling stored in or along the mechanically supporting structure ensures that the cabling is protected as safely as possible from environmental influences and improper handling.

[0033] To expand the spectrum of information reproduction, the product display device can also be equipped with a screen in addition to the at least two electronic display devices. In particular, this screen is located in the upper region of the product display device, in particular at the very top, where it can be used to provide information over a large area. The screen is therefore preferably located above the product storage area, in particular above the shelf compartments. Particularly preferably, the screen extends beyond the remaining structure of the product display device and, in particular, forms part of the uppermost section of the product display device. The screen is also electrically supplied by the supply unit.

[0034] In this context, it has proven particularly advantageous for the supply unit to have a media player that is designed to control the screen with playback content and is connected to it. Furthermore, the screen itself can also have a radio communication function and can thus be controlled via the radio infrastructure. However, it should be mentioned here that the media player can also be integrated into the screen itself. A media player is a computer that is programmed, for example, to receive and process MPEG-encoded video data and transmit a signal (digital or analog) suitable for the screen to the screen so that the content can be displayed there.

[0035] It should also be mentioned that the supply unit can also have a radio interface so that, for example, an active supply state or a power-saving standby state can be set using radio communication.

[0036] Regarding the mechanical structure of the merchandise display device, it should also be mentioned that it can be equipped with feet, especially height-adjustable ones. However, the merchandise display device is preferably equipped with casters (or wheels) on which it stands on the floor, allowing easy relocation within the store without having to lift the merchandise display device from the floor. The casters can be equipped with a brake that can be used to lock them in place to secure the installation location.

[0037] During operation, a method for operating the goods presentation device is used, wherein, according to the method, content data, in particular video data, is communicated from a control device separate from the goods presentation device via a radio communication infrastructure to the electronic display devices configured for radio communication. The radio communication infrastructure can, for example, have one or more access points. These access points can, for example, be connected to the control device via a cable. For example, a control device can be used that is implemented as a computer or server and is installed in the premises of the business where the goods presentation device is also set up.However, the access points can also be connected to the Internet via a gateway and thus communicate with a so-called cloud solution, a control device provided in a data center.

[0038] According to the method, the goods presentation device transmits detection data generated with the aid of the previously discussed detection device and representing the person activity in the vicinity of the goods presentation device to the control device either directly from the detection device designed for radio communication or indirectly via the display device designed for radio communication.

[0039] In order to qualify or quantify the effect of the marketing measure implemented with the help of the content data, the method uses the control device to analyze the personal activity represented with the help of the recording data in relation to the electronically changeable content represented by the content data and, if necessary, the content is changed in order to increase the personal activity.

[0040] This allows the impact of the displayed information to be directly recorded, evaluated, and tested in real time. If each shelf edge is equipped with a sensor, the displayed information can be individually designed at each shelf edge, and its impact can be individually recorded.

[0041] In summary, an improved information display is provided in the goods presentation device because at least one of the electronic display devices is positioned along two different shelf edges of the same shelf per shelf edge.

[0042] The two shelf edges are at an angle to each other, preferably at an angle of 45° to 135°, particularly preferably at an angle of 70° to 110°. Preferably, the two shelf edges are perpendicular to each other.

[0043] Finally, it should be generally mentioned that the electronic devices discussed here naturally contain electronics. The electronics can be discrete or integrated, or even a combination of both. Microcomputers, microcontrollers, and Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), possibly in combination with analog or digital electronic peripherals, can also be used. Many of the device functionalities mentioned are implemented – possibly in conjunction with hardware components – using software running on an electronic processor. Devices designed for radio communication usually have an antenna configuration for transmitting and receiving radio signals as part of a transceiver module. The electronic devices can also have an internal electrical power supply, which can be implemented, for example, with a replaceable or rechargeable battery. The devices can also be powered via a wired connection, either via an external power supply or via "Power over LAN".

[0044] These and other aspects of the invention are apparent from the figures discussed below.

[0045] Short character description

[0046] The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the accompanying figures using exemplary embodiments, to which, however, the invention is not limited. In the various figures, identical components are provided with identical reference numerals. They show schematically:

[0050] Fig. 3 a block diagram of an infrastructure in which the

[0051] Product presentation device is used.

[0052] Description of the embodiments

[0053] Figure 1 shows a goods display device 1 having a rear wall 2 to which four shelves are attached, namely a first shelf 3, a second shelf 4, a third shelf 5, and a fourth shelf 6. A screen 7 is mounted at the upper end of the rear wall 2. In the present case, the rear wall 2 is formed from a hollow profile frame 8 that encloses a metal grid 9 on all sides. A left and right hollow profile column 8A and 8B have slotted openings arranged in a grid on their front facing the shelves 3 to 6, into which the shelves 3 to 6 are hooked with their rearwardly projecting fastening hooks (not visible).

[0054] Each shelf compartment 3-6 is square and made of a sheet metal with a bent edge, thus having four shelf compartment edges 10 to 13. The shelf compartment edges 10 to 13 are only shown for the third shelf compartment 5 because they are clearly visible there. The first shelf compartment edge 10 is bordered by the grid 9 and is therefore not freestanding. The remaining three shelf compartment edges 11 to 13 are freestanding.

[0055] The first and second shelf compartments 3 and 4 each have an electronic display device implemented as a video shelf rail 14 for displaying still image and / or video content on the freestanding shelf compartment edges 11 to 13. In this configuration, the displayed content is perfectly visible when viewed from the left or right onto the merchandise display device 1, as well as when viewed from the front. Gaps between the video shelf rails 14 are filled with a cylinder-segment-like element 15 to create a homogeneous transition between the fronts of adjacent video shelf rails 14. This creates the impression of a continuous arrangement of the three video shelf rails 14 along the freestanding shelf compartment edges 11-13. Freestanding corners and / or edges of their housings are thus avoided, preventing a potential risk of injury. The video shelf rails 14 have a memory for storing video data VD and a computer for processing this video data VD, as well as a front-mounted shelf rail screen 16 for visualizing the content represented by the video data VD. Each video shelf rail 14 has a radio module with which the video data VD can be received via a radio communication infrastructure.

[0056] In the present exemplary embodiment, only the two upper shelves 3 and 4 are framed with the video shelf rails 14 because these are the focus of attention of adults. Consequently, the two lower shelves 6 and 5 are designed without video shelf rails along their freestanding shelf edges 11 to 13. The lowest shelf 6 serves, on the one hand, for storing goods and, together with the lowest strut of the hollow profile frame 8, forms a base or foot of the goods presentation device 1, which stands on the floor of a store. Oriented toward the floor, the goods presentation device 1 has height-adjustable foot stamps 17 at its four corner areas.

[0057] The height of the video shelf rails 14 is dimensioned such that they protrude only slightly upwards and downwards beyond the lateral shelf edge 11-13, so as not to obstruct the view of the goods stored in the shelf compartments 3-5. To prevent handling of products stored on the topmost shelf compartments 3 and 4 from damaging the video shelf rails 14 installed there, or to prevent goods stored on the upper shelf compartments 3 and 4 from tipping out, the top two shelf compartments 3 and 4 each have a slim metal bracket 18 along their freestanding shelf edges 10 to 13. The metal bracket 18 is mounted at a short distance from the video shelf rail 14 arranged parallel thereto on the upper side of the shelf compartments 3 and 4 and extends approximately along the entire length of the video shelf rail 14 and projects beyond it by approximately the same height as the video shelf rail 14.

[0058] Above the lowest shelf compartment 6, a power supply unit 19 is mounted along the metal grid 9. A so-called cold appliance plug (e.g., according to IEC-60320 C13 / C14) can be connected to it, which establishes the connection to the mains power supply. This is the only cable leading from the merchandise display device 1. Power supply lines leading from the power supply unit 19 are essentially barely noticeable or even invisible, routed along the supporting structures of the merchandise display device 1 to the consumers (video shelf rails 14 and screen 7) and connected there. A data line is also provided for the screen 7 to connect to the media player. The supply unit 19 has a series of openings 20 for ventilation, which are all directed downwards to protect the interior of the supply device from contamination by liquids or falling solids.

[0059] In order to record events, such as the number of people or their behavior in front of the goods presentation device 1, and possibly also their interaction with the goods presentation device 1, the goods presentation device 1 also has sensors, which in this case are designed as radar sensors 21. The radar sensor 21 generates and outputs detection data ED as a result of detecting the scene taking place or present in its detection range. In this case, the radar sensors 21 are located on the front, frontal shelf edge 12 adjacent to the video shelf rail 14 attached there, and their detection range is oriented towards the space in front of the goods presentation device 1. A similar measure can also be provided on the left and right sides, i.e. along the left shelf edge 11 or the right shelf edge 13.Also, only a single shelf can be equipped with a single or multiple radar sensors.

[0060] In the present case, the radar sensor 21 is connected to the supply unit 19 for power supply in the manner discussed. In the present case, each radar sensor 21 has its own radio module to enable use of the communication infrastructure. Alternatively, the radar sensor 21 can also be connected to the adjacent video shelf rail 14 for power supply. Alternatively, the radar sensor 21 can also be electronically connected to the adjacent video shelf rail 14 for use of the radio module present in the video shelf rail 14. However, the radar sensor 21 is preferably integrated into the video shelf rail 14, i.e., spatially located within the housing and electrically and electronically coupled to the electronics therein, so that the power supply is provided via the video shelf rail 14 itself and the radar sensor 21 can transmit its detection data ED via the radio communication module of the video shelf rail 14.

[0061] Figures 2A to 2D show the product display device 1 viewed from orthogonal directions. In detail, Figure 2A shows the left side, Figure 2B the front, Figure 2C the right side of the product display device 1, and Figure 2D shows the product display device 1 viewed from above. To avoid overloading the individual Figures 2A to 2D with reference symbols, the number of reference symbols has been deliberately reduced.

[0062] Figure 3 shows a schematic block diagram of a system for illustrating a method for operating the goods presentation device 1. The previously discussed goods presentation device 1 can be seen on the left-hand side of Figure 3. In the business premises in which the goods presentation device 1 is set up, a single radio access point 22 symbolizes the radio communication infrastructure of the business premises, which can also be designed in a more complex manner, as will be understood by a person skilled in the art. The radio access point 22 is connected via cable to a gateway 23, which provides a connection to the Internet, symbolized by a cloud 24. Furthermore, a data processing device 25 (e.g., a server or a data center, etc.) of a brand provider, which is also connected to the Internet, can be seen. The video data VD intended for playback via the video shelf rails 14 are generated or processed by the brand provider.provided and transmitted via the described communication infrastructure to the goods presentation device 1, where the content is visualized. During the visualization of the content by the video shelf rails 14, the radar sensors 21 detect customer activities in front of the goods presentation device 1 and, represented by the detection data ED, transmit them via the described communication infrastructure to the data processing device 25. The data processing device 25 analyzes the received detection data ED to determine whether or not the content displayed on the goods presentation device 1 triggers the desired behavior of the customers in front of the goods presentation device 1.Depending on the result of this analysis, the video data VD, i.e., the content to be played back, can be adjusted and retransmitted, and the customer dynamics occurring in front of the product presentation device 1 can be captured and further analyzed in real time. The video data VD can also be completely changed after the end of a campaign, and subsequently a completely different product can be promoted using the product presentation device 1.

[0063] The same applies to the upper screen 7, which can be used to display different content depending on the occasion.

[0064] In contrast to the cardboard or paper-based displays commonly used, which must be disposed of after a campaign and are often referred to in technical jargon as "second-side shippers," the measures described in this disclosure represent an ecologically advantageous, long-lasting solution. The digital customizability of the content to be displayed, which can also be tested in real time for its sales-promoting effect, provides brand manufacturers with a previously unavailable level of intervention in the design options for their marketing campaigns.

[0065] Finally, it should be noted once again that the figures described in detail above are merely exemplary embodiments that can be modified in a variety of ways by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention. For the sake of completeness, it should also be noted that the use of the indefinite articles "a" or "an" does not exclude the possibility that the relevant features may be present multiple times.
