Description

[0001] Consumable holding and feeding unit for an aerosol-generating device

[0002] Technical field

[0003] The present invention relates to a consumable holding and feeding unit for an aerosolgenerating device. The unit comprises a holding arrangement for accommodating a plurality of separate consumables. The unit also comprises a tray defining a storage portion for accommodating one consumable.

[0004] The present invention also relates to a consumable holding and feeding unit comprising said holding arrangement and further comprising biasing means for providing a biasing force to a first end of a stack of a plurality of consumables.

[0005] Overall, the units of the present invention provide for storage of one or more consumables and facilitate removal and replacement thereof. The present invention also relates to a respective aerosol-generating device comprising such a unit.

[0006] Technical background

[0007] Aerosol-generating devices, in particular Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (known as ENDS) have become popular worldwide over the last decades. These devices are alternatives to traditional combustible tobacco products such as cigarettes. Several types of aerosol-generating devices are currently available on the market, based on varying aerosolization technologies and aerosol-generating substrates.

[0008] One example of a subset of aerosol-generating devices employs heated tobacco products, also known as “heat-not-burn” products and / or systems (HNB). These HNB systems can generate an inhalable aerosol from heating a tobacco containing substrate, usually in solid or pulverulent form. Such HNB systems require an electronic device comprising a heating unit to heat up a tobacco containing substrate instead of burning tobacco as performed in conventional cigarettes. A further subset of aerosol-generating devices evaporates or vaporize a liquid (known as e-liquid) contained in a pod, wherein the liquid may or may not comprises nicotine to generate an aerosol to be inhaled by a user. These liquid-based aerosol-generating devices are convenient for users seeking an instant generation of an inhalable aerosol.

[0009] The above-mentioned aerosol-generating devices are usually provided with electronic heating means so as to heat an aerosol-forming substrate and / or a pod. Resistive heating means, inductive heating means, and heating means based on lasers, such as semiconductor laser diodes are known. Further, the above-mentioned aerosolgenerating devices usually have a space to accommodate one consumable (e.g., an aerosol-generating article, a pod, or the like). In various aerosol-generating devices of the prior art, a consumable can be provided in the form of one single tobacco disk or the like that is arranged in the mouthpiece. Once the consumable is consumed, the mouthpiece needs to be replaced by a new mouthpiece having a new consumable to be consumed by the user.

[0010] These conventional aerosol-generating devices have several drawbacks. For instance, the storage capacity of conventional aerosol-generating devices is not sufficient and limited to merely one consumable. Further, the consumable cannot be easily removed once consumed. In addition, the consumable cannot be easily replaced by another consumable. Further still, conventional aerosol-generating devices do not facilitate that a user can manually remove and / or replace a consumable to a sufficient extent.

[0011] In view of these disadvantages, the presently known aerosol-generating devices may not always lead to optimum results. There is thus a need to improve the presently known aerosol-generating devices.

[0012] Against this background, an object of the present invention is to address one or more or all of the above-mentioned disadvantages. Particularly, it is an object of the present invention to provide an improved unit for use in an aerosol-generating device. The unit should provide more user flexibility. In particular, the unit should facilitate storage, removal and replacement of a plurality of consumables. The user should be able to reliably perform such removal and replacement of the consumables and without much effort. It is also desirable that such removal and replacement can be performed without demanding power. Moreover, the unit should provide a hygienic operation of the overall aerosol-generating device. It is also an object to provide a respective aerosolgenerating device.

[0013] Summary of the invention

[0014] The above-mentioned objects and other objects, which become apparent from the following description, are solved by the subject-matter of the independent claims. Preferred embodiments are subject of the dependent claims.

[0015] First aspect of the unit

[0016] A 1stembodiment of the invention is directed to a consumable holding and feeding unit for an aerosol-generating device, the unit comprising: a holding arrangement for accommodating a plurality of separate consumables, such as consumables comprising an aerosol-forming substrate; a tray defining a storage portion for accommodating one consumable, the tray being removably engaged with the arrangement; wherein the tray is configured to feed a consumable into the arrangement and / or to remove a consumable from the arrangement.

[0017] In this manner, an improved consumable holding and feeding unit for an aerosolgenerating device is provided. The unit has the advantage of providing more user flexibility. The unit facilitates storage, removal and / or replacement of a plurality of consumables. Storage, removal, and / or replacement can be easily and reliably performed by the user in a repeated fashion. Storage, removal, and / or replacement may be performed at any time the user wants to do so, without having to perform any further cumbersome steps. The tray may be moved merely by a force provided by a user. Thereby, any (separate) power source for moving the tray may not be necessaiy although this is not precluded. Dispensing with a (separate) power source is appreciated by the user. For instance, the power source used for a heating unit of the aerosol-generating device may thereby not need a greater capacity. Thus, the power source maybe kept small in size. The unit also has the advantage of providing a clean and hygienic operation. The unit facilitates that an arbitrary number of consumables, in particular a number greater or equal than two can be stored in the arrangement and / or that the number of consumables can be flexibly increased and / or decreased. The holding arrangement may have a structural design such that it is capable of accommodating said plurality of consumables. The holding arrangement maybe implemented in various ways including but not limited to a housing, a frame, an elongate element for stacking consumables or the like. The holding arrangement may have the advantage of conferring protection to the consumables. In a preferred example, the holding arrangement may form part of a structural part of the aerosolgenerating device.

[0018] Any number of consumables greater than two may be encompassed by the plurality of consumables referred to herein in the present disclosure. However, if desired, a user may also store merely one consumable in the arrangement. It is appreciated that a relatively large number of consumables can be accommodated in the holding arrangement. Prior art devices are usually limited to one single consumable. The plurality of consumables may comprise, for instance, at least 2, at least 3, at least 4, at least 5, at least 6, at least 7, at least 8, at least 9, at least 10 or more consumables.

[0019] The consumables are separate, which means that they can be distinguished from one another by the skilled person as separate entities. They may be stacked on one another and / or they may contact one another. Nevertheless, they could be separated from one another. Thereby, one consumable comprising a first portion integrally formed with a second portion comprised by said consumable may not correspond to two separate consumables.

[0020] The term “aerosol-forming substrate” as used in the present disclosure may include materials that can volatilize upon heating as described elsewhere herein in greater detail.

[0021] The tray defining a storage portion for accommodating one consumable may be a mechanical element in a preferred embodiment. The storage portion may be formed as a cavity, a recess, an indentation, or the like in the tray. The tray may be removably engaged with the holding arrangement, for instance by way of suitable guiding means, or the like. To be removably engaged may mean that the tray can be attached to or placed in conjunction with the arrangement in a manner that is not permanent. In other words, the tray can be removed when desired and / or when necessary. The specific way of engagement can vary, including options such as sliding, clipping, or a form of screw mechanism, among others. However, said engagement is not limited to the foregoing examples and further means for engagement are not precluded.

[0022] The tray is configured to feed a consumable into the arrangement and / or to remove a consumable from the arrangement. Feeding a consumable into the arrangement may mean that the tray aids in introducing or supplying a consumable to the appropriate part of the arrangement. Removing a consumable from the arrangement may mean that the tray facilitates the extraction or disposal of a consumable from the arrangement. In one example, the removed consumable may be a used one. However, the present disclosure is not limited thereto. In one example, once a consumable has fulfilled its purpose, the tray may assist in taking said used consumable out of the arrangement, potentially preparing it for a new consumable to be fed into the arrangement with the help of the tray.

[0023] It is noted that feeding and / or removing of a consumable may be performed at any time. For instance, it could be performed during operation of the aerosol-generating device. Said operation of the aerosol-generating device may include that the aerosolgenerating device is in a state ready for heating one or more consumables. Preferably, only one consumable is heated at a time. Said operation of the aerosol-generating device may include that a heating unit has reached a sufficiently elevated temperature, such that an aerosol-forming substrate of the consumable can be heated. The temperature maybe sufficiently high such that an aerosol is formed from the aerosolforming substrate. Typically, the operation of the aerosol-generating device may include a state when a user inhales such an aerosol. However, feeding and / or removing may likewise be performed when the aerosol-generating device is not in operation. Feeding and / or removing may for instance be performed when the aerosol-generating device is in a cold state and / or in a state not warm enough so as to provide aerosols to be inhaled.

[0024] According to a 2ndembodiment, the tray is configured to be moved relative to the arrangement from at least a retracted position in which the tray is engaged with the arrangement and a consumable accommodated in the storage portion is in contact with a heating unit of the aerosol-generating device, to at least an extended position in which the storage portion of the tray is accessible by a user and a consumable accommodated in the storage portion can be removed by the hand of a user.

[0025] This further adds to the advantage mentioned above in that a consumable can be easily fed into the arrangement and removed from the arrangement. The tray is no limited to the retracted position and the extended position. A plurality of further positions of the tray are encompassed. These further positions may be between the retracted position and the extended position and / or not therebetween, e.g., they may be further away from the extended position as seen in the direction from the retracted position towards the extended position.

[0026] To be in contact with a heating unit means that, when the aerosol-generating device is in operation, the consumable accommodated in the storage portion may be heated such that an aerosol may be generated.

[0027] To be accessible by a user in the extended position has the advantage that the user can easily grab the consumable if desired. The tray being in the extended position does not preclude that a part of the tray may be still within the holding arrangement. As the tray is used for feeding, a substantially hygienic environment can be provided as the user comes in contact with the consumable only for a short period of time, e.g., only when placing the consumable into the tray.

[0028] Retraction means

[0029] According to a 3rdembodiment, the holding arrangement comprises retraction means, preferably two retraction teeth, configured to provide a biasing force to the plurality of consumables of the arrangement and / or to the tray, the biasing force preferably being directed in a first direction from a distal end to a mouth end of the unit.

[0030] This has the advantage that the plurality of consumables may be held in place even when the tray is in the extended position. It is understood that when the tray is in the retracted position, the biasing force may not be provided to the consumables but to the tray.

[0031] The retraction means may be one or more mechanical components, such as components comprising one or more springs. In a preferred embodiment, the retraction means may be supported by rods, such as guiding rods, for instance spring- loaded guiding rods. The retraction means may provide a biasing force towards a proximal end of the unit, such as an end that may come in contact with the mouth of a user.

[0032] The term “biasing” may mean to exert influence on, such as exerting a force on an object, such as the plurality of consumables and / or the tray to favor a certain position or movement.

[0033] The mouth end of the unit may refer to a part of the unit that can be received by a mouth of the user and / or a part of the unit that is arranged in proximity thereof. Typically, an aerosol can be consumed through the mouth end of the unit, which can be inhaled by the user. The mouth end may be designed to be placed in or near the user’s mouth for transmitting the produced aerosols into the user’s airway. The mouth end may be opposite to a distal end.

[0034] According to a 4thembodiment, the retraction means have an inclined surface such that they are configured to be pushed in a retracted position when the tray is moved from the extended position to the retracted position, wherein, when the retraction means are in the retracted position, they preferably do not provide a biasing force to the plurality of consumables.

[0035] Thereby, movement of the tray is enhanced. By having inclined surfaces, the movement of the tray from an extended position to a retracted position may push the retraction means towards a certain location or position within the unit and / or the arrangement. This can make handling and / or dispensing of the consumables more efficient and reliable. Further, this also makes an automated movement of the retraction means triggered by way of a movement of the tray more efficient. That is, because the retraction means are naturally guided into the correct position through the movement of the tray and the geometry of the inclined surfaces.

[0036] When the retraction means are in the retracted position and they no longer provide a biasing force to the consumables, it can be beneficial in a few ways. For instance, it can prevent unwanted movement of the consumables when it is not necessary and / or not necessary. Thus, any potential damage and / or misalignment of the consumables may be mitigated. Further, it can reduce unnecessary strain on the consumables, enhancing durability and longevity thereof.

[0037] According to a 5thembodiment, when the tray is in the extended position for removing a consumable, the retraction means are configured to substantially keep the remaining one or more of the plurality of consumables within the arrangement in the position which they have when the tray is in the retracted position.

[0038] The has the advantage that a position of the consumables is not varied due to a movement of the tray. When the tray is in the extended position (e.g., open or removed) to allow the removal of a consumable, the retraction means can hold the remaining consumables in place within the arrangement. This facilitates that there may not be any unwanted shifting or movement of the remaining consumables which could lead to misalignment or jamming when the tray is returned to the retracted position (e.g., closed or inserted). This embodiment may also make the loading or unloading process easier and more predictable for the user, as they can be confident that the remaining consumables are secure and will remain in the correct position, ready for the next use.

[0039] According to a 6thembodiment, the tray comprises an abutment portion configured to abut the retraction means, preferably the inclined surface of the retraction means.

[0040] The inclusion of an abutment portion on the tray that is configured to abut the retraction means, such as the inclined surface, provides several advantages. For instance, this can provide better mechanical control of the tray’s movement and / or the movement of the retraction means. When the abutment portion comes into contact with the inclined surface of the retraction means, it can help in smoothly moving the retraction means, for instance when the tray is moved from the extended to the retracted position. Further, when the abutment portion comes into contact with the inclined surface of the retraction means, it can also help in smoothly transitioning the tray between the extended and retracted positions, in particular from the retracted position to the extended position.

[0041] The abutment portion abutting the inclined surface can also guide the tray in a specific direction, ensuring the correct and precise path of movement. This may potentially reduce the chances of jamming or misalignment. The abutment portion can additionally or alternatively help distributing the force exerted by and / or on the tray. This may reduce stress on specific portions and may increase the overall durability and longevity of the unit. Moreover, the abutment portion can remove or place consumables in a more controlled way, as it directly interacts with the retraction mechanism. This can lead to more reliable operation and less likelihood of error an / or failure.

[0042] Tray

[0043] According to a 7thembodiment, the tray comprises a contact surface for supporting a consumable, and an opening for accommodating at least a part of the consumable.

[0044] This aids in accommodating the consumable. For instance, the contact surface and the opening may facilitate that the consumable can be held in place in a predictable manner. Further, the contact surface may provide for a frictional force such that the consumable can be held in place.

[0045] According to an 8thembodiment, the tray is configured to be moved relative to the holding arrangement in a direction substantially perpendicular to a mouth end to distal end axis of the unit.

[0046] This embodiment allows for a more efficient use of space within the unit and / or the holding arrangement. The perpendicular movement can allow the tray to occupy a smaller footprint within the arrangement, allowing for other component parts to have more space within the arrangement. Further, easier access may be ensured for the user when inserting or removing consumables from the tray. Instead of reaching in linearly towards the mouth end or distal end, one may approach the tray from the side. This may be easier and more comfortable for the user. In addition, by making the loading and unloading process follow a different direction compared to a main axis of the device (mouth end to distal end), it may help prevent any interference and / or disruptions to other components that reside along said main axis. This may make the overall device design more robust and reliable.

[0047] The direction substantially perpendicular to a mouth end to distal end axis of the unit, maybe substantially perpendicular to an elongate axis of the unit. Said elongate axis of the unit may preferably be substantially parallel to said main axis of the device. The mouth end and the distal end of the unit can be readily understood by the skilled person, as described elsewhere herein.

[0048] According to a 9thembodiment, the tray comprises a handle for moving the tray relative to the arrangement.

[0049] This provides the advantage that a user can conveniently move the tray relative to the holding arrangement. The handle may be shaped such that it smoothly fits the shape of one or more fingers or a hand of a user. This has the further advantage that the feeding and removal of a consumable could be performed manually by the hand of the user. Thereby, any means of power, such as electrical power, may not be necessary. This has ecological and economic advantages.

[0050] According to a iothembodiment, the tray is accessible by a hand of a user, preferably during operation of an aerosol-generating device comprising the unit.

[0051] Making the tray accessible by a user’s hand during the operation of an aerosolgenerating device may allow the user to easily insert or replace consumables without the need for additional tools or equipment, although this is not precluded. This may increase the convenience and user-friendliness of the unit. It may also allow for changing of consumables even during operation, reducing downtime and increasing the efficiency of the unit. Further, the user may have more direct control over the operation of the aerosol-generating device, being able to physically manipulate the consumables if necessary. In addition, in case there may be an issue during operation, like a malfunction or overheating, a user can quickly remove the consumable to prevent, for instance, harm or further damage to the device.

[0052] Biasing means

[0053] According to an 11thembodiment, the arrangement comprises biasing means providing a biasing force to the plurality of consumables in a second direction, the second direction preferably being from a mouth end to a distal end of the unit.

[0054] The advantage of having biasing means to provide a force in a specific direction (e.g., from mouth end to distal end of the unit) in the arrangement is for instance that the consumables can be guided in a specific path within the arrangement. This may make the operation more predictable and reliable. Further, the biasing force may ensure that the consumables maybe pushed smoothly towards an intended position. For instance, towards the distal end. This may prevent possible jamming and / or misalignments. In one example, the biasing force may continuously push the consumables towards the distal end. This may keep the unit ready for the next usage, enhancing its operational efficiency. The user may not need to manually manipulate consumables within the arrangement, streamlining the operation while minimizing potential issues. In one example, the second direction may be substantially opposite to the first direction.

[0055] According to a 12thembodiment, the arrangement comprises a supporting element, sandwiched between the biasing means and the plurality of consumables.

[0056] The supporting element may provide stability to the arrangement. Thus, the arrangement may be held together securely and firmly. Further, this adds to the advantages set out already in the 11thembodiment.

[0057] According to a 13thembodiment, a contact element is rotatably arranged relative to the supporting element and substantially fixedly arranged with one of the plurality of consumables, preferably with a consumable at an end of a stack of the plurality of consumables. The contact element may provide for a rotating bottom. This may facilitate that the support element can act as a sliding bearing below the biasing means and the consumables may be free to rotate together with the contact element.

[0058] Having a contact element that is rotatably arranged relative to the supporting element and fixedly arranged with one of the consumables, particularly at the end of a stack, provides several advantages: the rotation of the contact element can allow for a rotation of the consumables, possibly leading to a smoother and more controlled dispensing or removal of the consumable at the end of the stack. This may provide more reliability and may reduce the chance of operational issues. The rotation may provide a specific and / or controlled movement for the consumables. This may help to maintain proper alignment of the consumables within the holding arrangement. The rotational design may aid in distributing forces and / or movement evenly. This may reduce wear and tear and may increase the longevity of the unit. By being fixedly arranged with a consumable, the contact element aids in stabilizing the stack of consumables, ensuring they stay positioned correctly within the device, and assisting in their orderly dispensing.

[0059] To be fixedly arranged with the consumable is understood such that the contact element may not rotate relatively to the consumables. Thus, the contact element and the one consumable may not be permanently fixed to one another.

[0060] Shapes and arrangements

[0061] According to a 14thembodiment, the arrangement comprises a substantially cylindrically shaped shell, wherein each of the plurality of consumables preferably has the shape of a disc, more preferably the shape of an annular ring, for being accommodated within the shell.

[0062] Incorporating a cylindrical shell in the arrangement to hold disc-shaped or annular- ring-shaped consumables may have the advantage that an efficient use of space within the unit can be provided. This may be the case due to its symmetrical structure, enabling stacking of disc or ring-shaped consumables vertically within the shell. Further, disc and / or annular ring consumables within a cylindrical shell may offer better alignment and / or order. This may improve alignment within the arrangement and the unit. The shape of the consumables may be tailored so as to match the structure of the shell. This may enhance ease of insertion and / or removal, potentially allowing for a smoother operational mechanism.

[0063] A cylindrical shell may smoothly fit into an aerosol-generating device, which can be conveniently held by the hand of a user. A cylindrical shell may be designed ergonomically to fit comfortably into a user's hand.

[0064] In one example, the shell may be part of an outer wall, which could be part of a mouthpiece as described elsewhere herein.

[0065] According to a 15thembodiment, one or more, preferably each of the plurality of consumables has the shape of a disc, more preferably the shape of an annular ring.

[0066] Consumables shaped as discs or more preferably as annular rings, may provide the advantage that an efficient stacking of multiple consumables within a certain space can be provided. This may result in a compact and efficient design. Further, these shapes may ensure smooth and / or consistent operation because they can easily slide or move along the designated paths.

[0067] Generally, these shapes may be easy to handle, insert, or remove by users with minimal effort. This may streamline the user experience. In addition, discs or annular rings are less likely to break or crush because of their natural structural integrity, leading to more durable consumables.

[0068] The annular ring may offer the advantage that the consumable can be accommodated within the shell more easily. For instance, an elongate element may preferably protrude through a through hole of said annular ring as described elsewhere herein.

[0069] According to a 16thembodiment, the arrangement comprises an elongate element for stacking the plurality of consumables, the elongate element preferably defining an elongate axis arranged substantially parallel to an axis of the aerosol-generating device from a mouth end to a distal end, when the unit is arranged in the aerosol-generating device, wherein the elongate element is preferably arranged at least partially within the holding arrangement, wherein the elongate element preferably protrudes at least partially through the plurality of consumables.

[0070] The elongate element for stacking consumables in the arrangement may have the advantage that consumables can be stacked in an orderly manner, reducing the chance of misalignment and easing the delivery or removal of the consumables.

[0071] The arrangement of the elongate element parallel to the axis of the aerosol-generating device may ensure a uniform structure aligning with the main components of the aerosol-generating device. This may aid in providing a smooth operation of the aerosolgenerating device.

[0072] Further, when the elongate element is arranged at least partially within the holding arrangement, it may save space within the unit and, thereby, within the aerosolgenerating device. This may contribute to a compact design without compromising the arrangement’s and / or unit’s capacity.

[0073] The element protruding partially through the consumables may provide stabilization, ensuring that the consumables stay aligned when they are stored in the holding arrangement. This may be useful when using disc or ring-shaped consumables that can be stacked onto the elongate element.

[0074] The elongate element can also assist in the reloading and / or removing process of the consumables. It may be possible that a user may simply stack the consumables onto the protruding part of the elongate element. In this manner, the elongate element may act as a guide. However, preferably, the consumables maybe stacked onto the elongate element by way of a movement of the tray.

[0075] In one example, the elongate element may be a hollow tube for providing a fluid communication from one or more of the plurality of consumables to a mouth end of a mouthpiece as described elsewhere herein in greater detail. This may facilitate inhaling aerosols. In one example, the elongate element may be arranged in a radially central position of the holding arrangement and / or the unit.

[0076] Materials and consumables

[0077] According to a 17thembodiment, the tray comprises or preferably is made of stainless steel.

[0078] This material has the advantage to provide sufficient stability potentially improving robustness and longevity of the tray. In addition, this material may be relatively easy to procure, cost-effective, and widely accepted in this technical sector.

[0079] According to an 18thembodiment, the arrangement comprises the plurality of consumables and one or more of the plurality of consumables comprise a central portion comprising one or more recesses.

[0080] The use of a central portion with recesses in the consumables can contribute to improved performance, easier handling of consumables, and a more efficient and user- friendly design.

[0081] Second aspect of the unit

[0082] An 19thembodiment of the invention is directed to a consumable holding and feeding unit for an aerosol-generating device, the unit comprising: a holding arrangement for accommodating a plurality of separate consumables, such as consumables comprising an aerosol-forming substrate, in a stack having a first end and a second end; and biasing means for providing a biasing force to the first end of the stack; wherein the biasing means are configured such that the second end of the stack is substantially kept in a position in the arrangement which is independent on the number of the consumables in the stack; wherein the holding arrangement preferably comprises an elongate element for stacking the plurality of consumables; wherein the elongate element is preferably arranged at least partially within the holding arrangement.

[0083] The unit facilitates user flexibility and allows to store a plurality of consumables.

[0084] Further, as the second end of the stack is substantially kept in a position, the biasing means may ensure that the consumables are maintained in their intended position. This may serve the purpose to keep them in an order. Possible jamming and / or misalignments may be prevented. The biasing means may be triggered merely by a mechanical force, meaning that a power source for triggering the tray biasing means not be necessary, although this is not precluded. This is appreciated by the user as described elsewhere herein. The elongate element being arranged at least partially within the holding arrangement may save space within the unit. Further, the elongate element may have the combined advantage of facilitating stacking, providing stability to the arrangement, and allowing aerosols to be guided therethrough.

[0085] The unit facilitates that an arbitrary number of consumables can be stored in the arrangement and / or that the number of consumables can be flexibly increased and / or decreased.

[0086] The second end of the stack being substantially kept in a position may be independent on the number of the plurality of consumables. As understood, to keep the stack in a position in the arrangement is understood to be relative to the arrangement.

[0087] According to a 20thembodiment, the unit is a unit according to any one of the 1stto 18thembodiment.

[0088] Thereby, it is understood that the unit of the 19thembodiment may include all aspects and / or embodiments described herein with reference to the unit of the 1stto 18thembodiment. It is also to be understood that the features and advantages described with reference to the unit of the 1stto 18thembodiment may equally be applicable to the unit of the 19thembodiment.

[0089] Aerosol-generating device

[0090] A 21stembodiment of the invention is directed to an aerosol-generating device comprising: a consumable holding and feeding unit according to any one of the embodiments described in here; and a heating unit configured to provide heat to one or more of the plurality of consumables for generating an aerosol to be inhaled by a user. The aerosol-generating device as described herein may include all aspects and / or embodiments described herein, even if not expressly described as belonging to the aerosol-generating device but rather with reference to the consumable holding and feeding unit (or simply “unit” in here for brevity). It is also to be understood that the features and advantages described with reference to the consumable holding and feeding unit may equally be applicable to the aerosol-generating device, as it comprises the consumable holding and feeding unit. In one example, the consumable holding and feeding unit comprises the plurality of separate consumables. In another example, the consumable holding and feeding unit does not comprise the plurality of separate consumables. Nevertheless, it is noted that the consumable holding and feeding unit may need to be configured to accommodate said plurality of separate consumables.

[0091] The aerosol-generating device may be a portable or handheld aerosol-generating device that is comfortable for a user to hold. For instance, the aerosol-generating device may be held between the fingers and / or in the palm of a single hand.

[0092] The heating unit may be configured to generate heat so as to generate an aerosol for being inhaled by a user while a consumable is received (at least partially) within the aerosol-generating device. Any heating types are encompassed in the present disclosure. For instance, the heating unit may be of a resistive heating type (e.g., based on the principle of Ohmic heating, such that during operation, when an electrical circuit is established, electrical current passes through a heating element, for example a ceramic heating element, thereby generating heat), an inductive heating type (e.g., comprising at least one inductor coil configured to inductively heat a susceptor element), and / or of a laser type. Independent of the type of heating of the heating unit, the heating unit may be arbitrarily arranged within or outside the aerosol-generating device. Preferably, the heating unit is arranged within the aerosol-generating device.

[0093] According to a 22ndembodiment, the device is further comprising a mouthpiece configured to be received in a mouth of a user, wherein at least a part of the unit forms part of the mouthpiece, and wherein the unit is preferably a unit according to the 16thembodiment and the elongate element of the holding arrangement comprises a hollow tube for providing a fluid communication from one or more of the plurality of consumables to a mouth end of the mouthpiece. The part of the unit that forms part of the mouthpiece may be integrally formed with the mouthpiece. For instance, they may be made in part of one piece. However, it may be possible that the part of the unit that forms part of the mouthpiece could be separated from the mouthpiece in a non-destructive manner. Nevertheless, an integral formation is preferred.

[0094] The elongate element of the holding arrangement comprising a hollow tube for providing a fluid communication may provide for aerosol delivery to a user. This has the advantage that the elongate element has a combined technical effect, as it serves a plurality of needs. For instance, the elongate element may facilitate stacking, providing stability to the arrangement, and allowing aerosols to be guided therethrough.

[0095] According to a 23rdembodiment, the device is further comprising a body to which the mouthpiece is attached.

[0096] The body may have any shape suitable for allowing attachment of the mouthpiece. The body may provide structural stability and mechanical robustness to the device. The body may provide for protection. The body maybe configured to accommodate a variety of different parts, elements, and / or components of the aerosol-generating device. The body may have a shape such that it can be conveniently grabbed by the hand and / or fingers of a user.

[0097] According to a 24thembodiment, the device is further comprising a power supply configured to provide current to the heating unit, wherein the heating unit preferably comprises a laser, in particular a vertical cavity surface emitting laser, VCSEL, and most preferably not more than one VCSEL.

[0098] The power supply may be any suitable power supply, for example a DC voltage source, such as a battery, e.g., a lithium iron phosphate battery. Alternatively, the power supply may be a Nickel cadmium battery, a Nickel-metal hydride battery, or a Lithium based batteiy, for example a Lithium-Cobalt, a Lithium-Iron-Phosphate, Lithium Titanate, or a Lithium-Polymer battery. The power supply may be located within a part of the aerosol-generating device, or it may be another form of charge storage device such as a capacitor. The power supply may allow for recharging and may have a capacity that allows for storing enough energy for one or more, preferably a multitude of ordinary use cycles of the aerosol-generating device.

[0099] A laser heater utilizes laser technology to heat the aerosol-forming substrate of a consumable used in the aerosol-generating device. Focused laser energy maybe used to rapidly heat the aerosol-forming substrate, which can lead to precise and controlled formation of aerosols / vaporization. A laser heater may have the ability to generate high-temperature and high-energy-density environments. A laser heater maybe capable of rapidly heating the aerosol-forming substrate, resulting in faster aerosol production in some cases.

[0100] A vertical cavity surface emitting laser (V CSEL) may be a type of semiconductor laser diode with laser beam emission. Said emission may be perpendicular from a top surface. This may be contrary to conventional edge-emitting semiconductor lasers (also in-plane lasers) which may emit from surfaces formed by cleaving the individual chip out of a wafer.

[0101] When the device has merely a single VCSEL device, this has the advantage that a lower number of parts need to be monitored and / or that only a lower number of parts can fail.

[0102] The term “substantially” as used in the present disclosure means that manufacturing tolerances are included. Thus, slight variations of dimensions, shapes, or the like deviating from their intended dimensions, shapes, or the like are encompassed. Thereby, the present disclosure is not limited to the precise dimensions, shapes, or the like mentioned in here.

The aerosol-forming substrate may be provided in any desired form including but not limited to the form of a solid, a liquid, a gel or a wax or any other suitable form. Said aerosol-forming substrate may also be a combination or a blend of materials. Said aerosol-forming substrate may comprise components such as nicotine, propylene glycol, PG, and / or vegetable glycerin, VG.

[0116] The terms “one end”, “the other end”, “outer side”, “upper”, “above”, “inner side”, “under”, “below”, “horizontal”, “coaxial”, “central”, “end” “part”, “length”, “outer end” etc., which indicate the orientation or positional relationship, are based on the orientation or positional relationship shown in the drawings.

[0117] The terms “upper”, “above”, “below”, “under” and the like as used in the present invention to indicate a relative position in space are used for the purpose of facilitating explanation to describe a unit, device, part, component and / or feature shown in the drawings relative to the relationship of another unit, device, part, component and / or feature.

[0118] The term of the relative position in space maybe intended to include different orientations of the unit, device, part, component and / or feature other than those shown in the figures. For example, if the unit, device, part, component and / or feature in the figure is turned over, the unit, device, part, component and / or feature described as being “below” or “under” other units, devices, parts, components and / or features will be “above” the other unit, device, part, component and / or feature. Therefore, the exemplary term “below” can encompass both the above and below orientations.

[0119] Embodiments shown in the figures

[0120] In the following, the invention is described with reference to the accompanying figures in more detail. However, the present invention can also be used in other embodiments not explicitly disclosed hereafter. As detailed below, the embodiments are compatible with each other, and individual features of one embodiment may also be applied to another embodiment.

[0121] Throughout the figures and description, the same reference numerals refer to the same elements, unless stated otherwise. The figures may not be drawn to scale, and the relative size, proportions, and depiction of elements in the figures may be exaggerated for the purpose of clarity, illustration, and convenience. The figures do not limit the scope of the claims but merely support the understanding of the invention.

[0122] Fig. i shows a consumable holding and feeding unit io for an aerosol-generating device too according to the first aspect described in here. The unit io comprises a holding arrangement n for accommodating a plurality of separate consumables 50, such as consumables 50 comprising an aerosol-forming substrate (not indicated in Fig. 1 but comprised within each separate consumable 50). The unit 10 also comprises a tray 15 defining a storage portion for accommodating one consumable 50. The tray 15 is removably engaged with the arrangement 11. Further, the tray 15 is configured to feed a consumable 50 into the arrangement 11 and / or to remove a consumable 50 from the holding arrangement 11.

[0123] Fig. 1 also shows a consumable holding and feeding unit 10 for an aerosol-generating device too according to the second aspect described in here. The unit 10 comprises a holding arrangement 11 for accommodating a plurality of separate consumables 50, such as consumables comprising an aerosol-forming substrate (not indicated in Fig. 1 but comprised within each separate consumable 50), in a stack 53 (indicated in Fig. 5 and Fig. 7) having a first end 53a and a second end 53b (indicated in Fig. 5). The unit 10 also comprises biasing means 20 for providing a biasing force to the first end 53a of the stack 53. The biasing means 20 are configured such that the second end 53b of the stack 53 is substantially kept in a position in the arrangement 11 which is independent on the number of the consumables 50 in the stack 53. The holding arrangement 11 preferably comprises an elongate element 13 for stacking the plurality of consumables 50. The elongate element 13 is preferably arranged at least partially within the holding arrangement 11.

[0124] The tray 15 is configured to be moved relative to the arrangement 11 from at least a retracted position in which the tray 15 is engaged with the arrangement 11 and a consumable 50 accommodated in the storage portion of the stray 15 is in contact with a heating unit 126 of the aerosol-generating device too, to at least an extended position in which the storage portion of the tray 15 is accessible by a user and a consumable 50 accommodated in the storage portion of the tray 15 can be removed by the hand of a user. To be in contact means that heat can be transferred from the heating unit 126 to the consumable 50. It does not mean that physical contact between the consumable 50 and the heating unit 126 is required.

[0125] Fig. 1 shows in the left part a retracted position of the tray 15 and in the right part an extended position of the tray 15. Fig. 3 also shows in the left part a retracted position of the tray 15 and in the right part an extended position of the tray. Fig. 4 also shows in the two left parts a retracted position of the tray 15 and in the right part an extended position of the tray. Fig. 5 shows a retracted position of the tray 15 and Fig. 6 shows an extended position of the tray 15.

[0126] As best seen in Fig. 4, the holding arrangement 11 comprises retraction means 30. The retraction means 30 are preferably two retraction teeth 30. The retraction means 30 are configured to provide a biasing force to the plurality of consumables 50 of the arrangement 11 and / or to the tray 15. The biasing force is preferably directed in a first direction from a distal end 10b (as indicated in Fig. 2) to a mouth end 10a (as indicated in Fig. 2) of the unit 10. It is noted that the mouth end 10a of the unit may also be arranged further to the mouth end 100a of the aerosol-generating device 100 (as indicated in Fig. 2).

[0127] As best seen in Fig. 5 and Fig. 6, the retraction means 30 have an inclined surface 31 such that they 15 are configured to be pushed in a retracted position (Fig. 5) when the tray 15 is moved from the extended position to the retracted position. When the retraction means 15 are in the retracted position (Fig. 5), they preferably do not provide a biasing force to the plurality of consumables 50 (as indicated in Fig. 5, the tray 15 is between the retraction means 15 and the consumables 50. When the tray 15 is in the extended position (Fig. 6) for removing a consumable 50, the retraction means 30 are configured to substantially keep the remaining one or more of the plurality of consumables 50 within the arrangement 11 in the position which they have when the tray 15 is in the retracted position. As can be seen in Fig. 5 and Fig. 6, the position of the five consumables 50 above the one consumable 50 that is removed from the stack 53 does not vaiy. Further, the retraction means 30 may be supported by supports 32. In one example, the supports 32 may be spring-loaded so as to provide for a biasing force of the retraction means against the consumables 50 and / or the tray 15. It is noted that the number of consumables shown in the embodiments are merely an example and do not limit the number of consumables 50.

[0128] As best seen in Fig. 4, the tray 15 comprises an abutment portion 19 configured to abut the retraction means 30, preferably the inclined surface 31 (also indicated in Fig. 5 and Fig. 6) of the retraction means 30. In this manner, the retraction means 30 can be brought into the retracted position, i.e., pushed downwards, when the tray 15 is moved from the extended position (Fig. 6) to the retracted position (Fig. 5), as also derivable from Fig. 4.

[0129] As best seen in Fig. 4, the tray 15 comprises a contact surface 17 for supporting a consumable 50, and an opening 18 for accommodating at least a part of the consumable 50. The tray 15 may be configured to be moved relative to the holding arrangement 11 in a direction substantially perpendicular to a mouth end 10a (as indicated in Fig. 2) to distal end 10b (as indicated in Fig. 2) axis MD (as indicated in Fig. 1, Fig. 2, and Fig. 3) of the unit 10. The tray 15 may comprise a handle 16 for moving the tray 15 relative to the arrangement 11. The tray 15 may be accessible by a hand of a user, preferably during operation of an aerosol-generating device too comprising the unit 10.

[0130] The handle 16 may be attached to the tray 15 by any kind of attachment means. Such “attaching”, and variations thereof includes the joining of the handle 16 and the tray 15 directly or indirectly to one another. Such attachment may be stationary (e.g., permanent or fixed) or moveable (e.g., removable or releasable). Such attachment may be achieved with the two parts coupled directly to each other, with the two parts coupled with each other using a separate intervening part and / or any additional intermediate parts coupled with one another, or with the two parts coupled with each other using an intervening part that is integrally formed as a single unitaiy body with one of the two parts. The attachment maybe a mechanical attachment. Further, the attachment may include a form fit connection of the two parts. This may create a tight and secure fit of the handle 15 and the tray 16 without the need for additional fasteners or adhesives. Thereby, the attachment may rely on the geometry of the handle 15 and the tray 16 to create a strong and stable attachment. However, usage of additional means for attachment is not precluded. Suitable attachment means are described elsewhere herein in greater detail. As can be gathered inter alia from Fig. 7, the arrangement 11 comprises biasing means

[0131] 20 corresponding to the biasing means 20 already described in relation to the second aspect. The biasing means 20 provide a biasing force to the plurality of consumables 50 in a second direction, the second direction preferably being from a mouth end 10a (as indicated in Fig. 2) to distal end 10b (as indicated in Fig. 2) of the unit 10. Thereby, the second direction is opposite to the first direction described elsewhere herein in greater detail. As can be gathered from Fig. 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7, the arrangement 11 comprises a supporting element 22, sandwiched between the biasing means 20 and the plurality of consumables 50. Further, a contact element 23 (as best seen in Fig. 7) is rotatably arranged relative to the supporting element 22 and substantially fixedly arranged with one of the plurality of consumables 50, preferably with a consumable 50 at an end of a stack 53 of the plurality of consumables 50. Said end of the stack 53 maybe the first end 53a of the stack 53. In a preferred embodiment, the supporting element 22 may comprise a friction bearing or the like. For instance, it may comprise one or more rollers, in particular steel rollers, such as 12 (twelve) steel rollers. Said rollers may comprise a PTFE coating. Moreover, the arrangement 11 may comprises a stop 21 for the biasing means 20, in particular an upper stop 21 for the biasing means 20. The stop

[0132] 21 may be fixedly arranged in the arrangement 11 and / or in the unit 10. In this manner, the biasing means 20 can advantageously provide for said biasing force. For reasons of clarity, the mouthpiece 110 of Fig. 7 is depicted as being semi-transparent. This does not necessarily mean that the mouthpiece 110 may be designed to be semi-transparent, although this is not precluded.

[0133] As indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, the arrangement 11 may comprise a substantially cylindrically shaped shell 12. Each of the plurality of consumables 50 preferably has the shape of a disc, or the shape of an annular ring, for being accommodated within the shell 12. As further indicated in Fig. 2 and 3, the arrangement 11 may comprise an elongate element 13 corresponding to the elongate element 13 already described in relation to the second aspect. The elongate element 13 my be used for stacking the plurality of consumables 50. The elongate element 13 may define an elongate axis L arranged substantially parallel to an axis MD of the aerosol-generating device too from a mouth end 100a to a distal end 100b, when the unit 10 is arranged in the aerosolgenerating device too. The elongate element 12 is preferably arranged at least partially within the holding arrangement 11. Further, the elongate element 13 preferably protrudes at least partially through the plurality of consumables 50.

[0134] Fig. 8 shows the shape of a disc, preferably the shape of an annular ring of a consumable 50 in greater detail. As described elsewhere herein, the arrangement 11 can comprise the plurality of consumables 50. Further, one or more of the plurality of consumables 50 can comprise a central portion 51 comprising one or more recesses 52. As can be further seen in Fig. 8, the central portion 51 of the consumable 50 may comprise a through hole 54. This may facilitate that the consumables 50 can be stacked onto the elongate element 13. In this manner, it is understood that the elongate element 13 may be able to protrude at least partially through the plurality of consumables 50.

[0135] In one example, the central portion 51 may be provided with paper, such as compressed paper and / or a polymer. This may provide for a smooth contact between one or more consumables 50.

[0136] In the particular example of Fig. 8, the central portion 51 comprises eight recesses 52 on an upper side of the central portion 51, which are circumferentially spaced apart substantially equidistantly. Further, the central portion 51 comprises eight recesses 52 on a lower side of the central portion 51, which are circumferentially spaced apart substantially equidistantly.

[0137] One or more of the recesses 52 may be implemented in various ways including but not limited to an aperture, a groove, a slit, a cut, and / or a vent or the like. The one or more recesses 52 have the advantage that a fluid path, in particular a vapor path is provided, which may aid for cooling and / or for guiding aerosols.

[0138] The central portion 51 may comprise a protrusion, preferably an annular protrusion extending from the upper side and / or a protrusion, preferably an annular protrusion extending from the lower side. One or both of the protrusions may aid in keeping a distance between consumables 50. In this manner, the aerosol-forming substrate of the consumables may not contact each other, although this is not precluded. As best seen in Fig. 1, an aerosol-generating device too is depicted comprising said consumable holding and feeding unit io according to any one of the embodiments of the first aspect and the second aspect as described in here. The device too further comprises a heating unit 126 (as best seen in Fig. 3) configured to provide heat to one or more of the plurality of consumables 50 for generating an aerosol to be inhaled by a user. The device 100 may further comprise a mouthpiece 110 configured to be received in a mouth of a user. At least a part of the unit 10 may form part of the mouthpiece 110. Further, the elongate element 13 of the holding arrangement 11 may comprise a hollow tube 13 for providing a fluid communication from one or more of the plurality of consumables 50 to a mouth end (which may be similar to the mouth end 100a of the device 100) of the mouthpiece 110. The unit 10 may be implemented within the mouthpiece 110, for instance as an integral unit. Thereby, the mouthpiece 110 may be delivered as one single piece comprising the unit 10. Additionally, or alternatively, the user may fill the mouthpiece 110 with consumables 50 by his own.

[0139] The device too may further comprise a body 120 to which the mouthpiece 110 is attached. Any attachment means described in here, such as attachment means used to attach the body 120 and the mouthpiece 110 include one or more or all of the following non-exhaustive list: fasteners (such as screws, bolts, nuts, rivets, clamps, staples), adhesives and glues (various types of adhesive substances may bond together when they dry or cure, a double-sided tape comprising adhesive on both sides of a tape), welding (melting portions of the parts at least partially and fusing them together), soldering (melting a low-temperature part for joining), mechanical connections (latches and catches, hooks and loops, zip ties), magnetic attachments, snap-fit connections (interlocking components that snap together). As understood by the skilled person, the way in which any two or more parts are attached to one another may depend on the materials involved and / or the specific intended purpose.

[0140] As inter alia seen in Fig. 3, the device too further comprises a power supply 125 configured to provide current to the heating unit 126, wherein the heating unit 126 preferably comprises a laser, in particular a vertical cavity surface emitting laser, VCSEL. In one example, the heating unit 126 consist of one VCSEL Single VCSEL aerosol-generating devices known from the prior art can accommodate only a single consumable. However, this is not practical and does not serve users’ needs to an optimum degree. Users may desire to carry a plurality of consumables directly in the aerosol-generating device. According to some embodiments and aspects described in here, the inventors found a way to overcome this issue.

[0141] In any one or more of the above-mentioned embodiments, the tray 15 may comprise stainless steel so as to provide a certain degree of stability to the unit 10. Thus, the tray 15 maybe able to cope with movements thereof without jeopardizing damage thereof. This may make the overall device design more robust and reliable. Preferably, the tray 15 maybe made of stainless steel.

[0142] It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that numerous modifications and variations of the described examples and embodiments are possible in light of the above teaching. The disclosed examples and embodiments are presented for purposes of illustration only. Other embodiments may include some or all of the features disclosed herein. Therefore, it is the intent to cover all such modifications and alternate embodiments as may come within the true scope of this invention.
