Abstract
Description
Absorbent Article with Shaping Element and Printed TopsheetField of the invention
[0001] The present disclosure relates to absorbent articles, such as sanitary napkins, panty liners, incontinence pads, and incontinence liners, which are designed to accommodate a balance between user comfort and efficient fluid handling. In particular, these absorbent articles are configured to conform to the anatomy of the wearer and to provide the wearer with a feeling of security against leakage while being discrete and comfortable to wear. Background
[0002] Absorbent articles, such as sanitary napkins, panty liners, incontinence pads, incontinence liners, and the like need to have good absorptive properties and should provide the wearer with a sense of security against leakage. Such absorbent articles are typically meant to absorb bodily fluids and / or exudates, such as urine and menses, and can take different forms tailored in relation to the type and / or amount of bodily discharge(s) intended to be managed. For example, absorbent articles in the form of pads may accommodate relatively higher or heavier bladder leakage while those in the form of liners, which are typically thinner than absorbent pads, may be provided to accommodate relatively lower or lighter bladder leakage. Alternatively, sanitary napkins may be provided to capture menses and / or other bodily discharge(s).
[0003] Regardless of the type, these absorbent articles are generally constructed with an absorbent core designed to receive and retain the body fluids and / or exudates. In order to provide maximum leakage containment the absorbent core should be able to quickly acquire the discharged bodily fluid(s) into its structure from the point(s) of insult and efficiently distribute the same therein. Known solutions for fluid handling and management involve forming the absorbent core from highly absorptive materials and / or with a multi-layered structure. Other solutions involve providing the absorbent article with one or more additional layers between the topsheet and the absorbent core to further facilitate liquid handling, mainly intake and distribution, into and within the absorbent core.
[0004] These solutions, however, can lead to the provision of an absorbent article that is bulky, which by extension, can be uncomfortable to wear. Not to mention, a bulky article may lack discretion in the sense that it may be visible or apparent when worn even from underneath one or more layers of clothing, which may further detract from the wearer’s comfort with the article. These disadvantages are of concern, particularly for pad-type absorbent articles, like incontinence pads, which are intended to absorb and retain relatively larger amounts of fluids.
[0005] Despite efforts to improve the absorptive properties of such absorbent articles, there still remains a need for further improvements in terms of the balance between user comfort and efficient fluid handling characteristics of the articles, and particularly by enabling the article to conform to the anatomy of the wearer, to distribute absorbed body fluids / exudates in a predetermined and reliable manner, and to prevent leakage, all without sacrifice to the user’s confidence in the article.Summary
[0006] It has been found that despite prior art solutions for absorbent articles, there is still a need to improve user comfort and confidence in such articles, especially with respect to the fit of the article during use and the sense of security against leakage it provides. In this regard, it is important that the absorbent articles are enabled to spread absorbed fluids in a reliable and controlled manner, and by extension, prevent leakage therefrom. It is of further importance that the absorbent articles also give the user a visual indication of the security against leakage. This may, in turn, create a sense of security, increase the user’s confidence in the article, and / or enhance the wellbeing of the user.
[0007] An objective of the present disclosure is thus to provide an absorbent article with improved performance and comfort. Further, it is desirable that the absorbent article is enabled to manage a rapid rush of fluid quickly and efficiently, such as urine or menstrual blood, discharged by the wearer. More particularly, it is desirable that the fluid be able to quickly reach the absorbent core where it is efficiently distributed and securely retained.
[0008] It is also an objective to provide an absorbent article with an improved fit in which leakage security is not reduced if not all together unaffected. The absorbent article may be any one of a sanitary towel or napkin, a panty liner, an incontinence pad, or an incontinence liner.
[0009] It is further desirable to provide a disposable absorbent article that is both discrete and comfortable to wear.
[0010] The objectives set forth herein are achieved by the present absorbent article as defined in the appended claims.
[0011] Accordingly, in a first aspect of the disclosure, there is provided a disposable absorbent article having a width in a transverse direction (x) along a central transverse axis (X) between first and second edges and a length in a longitudinal direction (y) along a central longitudinal axis (Y) between a front edge and a rear edge, the length comprising a front portion, a rear portion, and a central portion arranged between the front and rear portions. The absorbent article comprises a liquid-permeable topsheet, a liquid-impermeable backsheet, and an absorbent core arranged between the topsheet and the backsheet. The absorbent article also comprises at least one shaping element comprising a plurality of embossed shaping lines. The plurality of embossed shaping lines comprise first and second side shaping lines that are mirror-symmetric about the central longitudinal axis (Y). Each side shaping line has a length in the longitudinal direction (y) that extends between a respective front endpoint in the front portion and a respective rear endpoint in the rear portion, and is spaced a distance apart from the central longitudinal axis (Y). The at least one shaping element has a maximum transverse width between the first and second side shaping lines in the front portion and tapers to a minimum transverse width between the first and second side shaping lines in the central portion or the rear portion. The topsheet comprises first and second print lines, which each have a length in the longitudinal direction (y) that extends between the front and rear portions and are mirror-symmetric about the central longitudinal axis (Y). The first print line is arranged in parallel with the first side shaping line and the second print line is arranged in parallel with the second shaping line. Further, the first and second print lines are spaced a respectivedistance apart from the plurality of embossed shaping lines of the at least one shaping element and from each other.
[0012] The shaping element, and more specifically the plurality of embossed shaping lines, are arranged such to give the absorbent article a Y-like, essentially Y-like, or a Y-shape. Moreover, this particular shape enables the absorbent article to conform to a high degree to the anatomy of a wearer during use. By conforming at a high degree to the anatomy of the wearer, the fit of the article can be improved for the wearer. The function of the article may be further improved by extension of improvement to the fit during use, particularly in that a good fit may be considered to correlate with a high level of security against leakage because the article is suitably and securely positioned to acquire and retain expelled bodily fluids and / or exudates.
[0013] Having first and second print lines that are spaced a distance apart from the embossed shaping lines may further contribute to any one of more of the user’s experience of the absorbent article, the user’s confidence in the product, and the user’s overall well-being. These print lines are preferably arranged at a relatively small distance (e.g., 2 mm) and in parallel with the embossed shaping lines. This arrangement may assist to highlight the location of the embossed shaping lines which may be less visible depending on any one or more of the type of absorbent article, material(s) from which the article is formed, and the overall thickness of the article. By highlighting the shape formed in the absorbent article by the embossed shaping lines, and by extension where the absorbent article is intended to preferentially bend and / or flex during use, a higher level of security against leakage may be conveyed to the wearer. This may, in turn, increase the user’s confidence in the product, which may also enhance the user’s experience with the product and the user’s overall well-being.
[0014] The plurality of embossed shaping lines may further comprise a front shaping line arranged in the front portion that is mirror-symmetric about the central longitudinal axis (Y). The front shaping line has a midpoint that intersects with the central longitudinal axis (Y) and extends outward from the midpoint at an angle to respective first and second front free ends. Also, the topsheet may further comprise a third print line arranged in the front portion, in parallel with the front shaping line and having a midpoint that intersects with the central longitudinal axis (Y) and extending outward therefrom at an angle toward the first and second edges. Further, the third print line is preferably spaced a respective distance apart from the plurality of embossed shaping lines of the at least one shaping element and from the first and second print lines.
[0015] In certain embodiments, at least one of the print lines may be arranged in an area bordered by the plurality of embossed shaping lines.
[0016] In other embodiments, at least one of the print lines may be arranged outside of an area bordered by the plurality of embossed shaping lines.
[0017] Each of the print lines may be spaced a distance of from 1 to 10 mm, preferably 1 to 6 mm, apart from any of the plurality of embossed shaping lines in the transverse direction (x).
[0018] The third print line may be spaced a distance of from 1 to 10 mm, preferably 1 to 6 mm, apart from the front shaping line in the longitudinal direction (y).The print lines may be continuous print lines or discontinuous print lines. It is contemplated that for any given plurality of print lines, each print line may be of the same type (i.e., all continuous print lines or all discontinuous print lines) in certain embodiments. It is also contemplated that for any given plurality of print lines, the type of print lines within the plurality can be varied in any combination (e.g., one or more discontinuous print lines and one or more continuous print lines) in other embodiments.
[0019] In one non-limiting embodiment, the front shaping line may have a length that is equal to or longer than a length of the third print line.
[0020] In an exemplary embodiment, the length of the first side shaping line may be equal to or longer than the length of the first print line. Similarly, the length of the second side shaping line may be equal to or longer than the length of the second print line.
[0021] The first and second shaping lines may be connected in the rear portion by a transverse rear shaping segment. The rear shaping segment may be preferably curved or rounded in shape.
[0022] The absorbent article may comprise a primary inlet zone. In a non-limiting embodiment, the primary inlet zone is arranged in the front portion and partly extends into the central portion. It may further be preferable that the primary inlet zone is arranged in an area bordered by the plurality of embossed shaping lines.
[0023] In a non-limiting embodiment, the absorbent core may have a multi-layered structure. The multi-layered structure can be formed of a plurality of individual layers that are laminated or otherwise joined together, one or more discrete absorbent members, or combinations thereof.
[0024] The absorbent article may further comprise an optional acquisition layer arranged between the topsheet and the absorbent core. When provided, the optional acquisition layer is preferably arranged in direct contact with the bottom surface of the topsheet and a top surface or layer of the absorbent core. The optional acquisition layer may be provided to further enhance the fluid handling properties of the absorbent article because such layers are typically designed to rapidly acquire a relatively large amount of bodily fluid and efficiently distribute to the absorbent core where it is retained.
[0025] In non-limiting, exemplary embodiments, the acquisition layer may have a length in the longitudinal direction (y) and a width in the transverse direction (x) that are equal to or shorter than a respective length and a respective width of the absorbent core. However, it is to be understood that the dimensions of the acquisition layer and / or the absorbent core may be readily chosen by one of skill the art as desired.
[0026] It is thus also contemplated that in other exemplary embodiments, the acquisition layer may have a length in the longitudinal direction (y) and / or a width in the transverse direction (x) that is / are longer than the respective length and the respective width of the absorbent core.
[0027] In exemplary embodiments, the acquisition layer comprises a nonwoven material comprising synthetic fibers. The acquisition may be an airlaid nonwoven, a spunlace nonwoven, or a highloft nonwoven.
[0028] The plurality of embossed shaping lines extend down through the topsheet and into at least one of the acquisition layer and a top surface of the absorbent core, whichever is arranged in directcontact with the topsheet. The shaping lines are embossed into at least the top two layers of the absorbent article from the user-facing side as this facilitates preferential bending of the article and by extension may serve to enhance the conformance of the absorbent article to the wearer’s anatomy during use. This may also be considered to help improve the overall fit of the article.
[0029] The plurality of embossed shaping lines extend through a thickness of the absorbent article between the topsheet and a bottom surface of the absorbent core. Likewise, having the shaping lines extend through a greater thickness of the absorbent articles facilitates the preferential bending thereof. Enhancement to the bending of the article may be particularly apparent in relatively thicker absorbent articles, for example an incontinence pad, when the embossed shaping lines extend through a greater percentage of the layers. Again, this may serve to contribute to improving the overall fit of the article during use.
[0030] In one non-limiting embodiment, each of the front shaping, the first side shaping line, the second side shaping line is one of a continuous embossing line or a discontinuous embossing line.
[0031] The absorbent core may be formed from a number of different materials and / or combinations thereof. In an exemplary embodiment, the absorbent core may comprise one or more of [cellulosic fluff] pulp, natural fibers, synthetic fibers, tissue, superabsorbent polymers (SAP), absorbent foam materials, absorbent nonwoven materials, and the like.
[0032] Depending on the particular type (e.g., incontinence pad, incontinence liner, sanitary pad, etc.) of the absorbent article, the thickness may be suitably dimensioned by one of skill in the art. In one non-limiting example, the absorbent article may have a thickness of from 2 to 15 mm, and if the absorbent article is an incontinence pad the thickness may be between 5 to 15 mm, and if the absorbent article is for very small amounts of liquid, such as an incontinence liner, the thickness may be between 2 to 5 mm.
[0033] The absorbent article can take the form of a number of different shapes. For example, in one non-limiting embodiment, the absorbent article may have a generally rectangular shape with rounded edges at the front and rear edges. This is particularly desirable from a manufacturing standpoint because a rectangle is a relatively simple shape that well accommodates processing through a manufacturing line and requires minimal cuts to shape the material. This also means the material waste is minimized.
[0034] When the absorbent article has a generally rectangular shape, the first and second side edges may be straight or essentially straight in certain non-limiting embodiments. In other nonlimiting embodiments, the absorbent article may further comprise a transition region between the front portion and the central portion in which the transverse width of the absorbent article tapers from a maximum transverse width to a minimum transverse width.
[0035] The absorbent article may further comprise a first side elastic arranged adjacent to the first edge and a second side elastic arranged adjacent to the second edge and in parallel with the first side elastic. These elastic may further contribute to the bending of the absorbent article during use, particularly so that it better conforms to the anatomy of the user. Additionally, having elastics along the side edges can provide a more secure fit, which in turn, can enhance the security against the risk of leakage of the product.
[0036] Further, the first and second side elastics each have a length in the longitudinal direction(y). In one non-limiting embodiment, the respective lengths of the first and second side elastics extend between the front portion and the central portion.
[0037] In exemplary embodiments, the absorbent article may be an incontinence pad or an incontinence liner.
[0038] In addition to comprising a print thereon, the topsheet may comprise a material that is at least partially transparent or that is fully transparent. This may assist to enhance the appearance of any one or more of the print, one or more layers arranged underneath the topsheet, and one or more element(s), such as the shaping element, comprised or formed in the one or more layers of the absorbent article arranged below the topsheet.
[0039] In another aspect of the present disclosure, a method for manufacturing an absorbent article as described herein is provided. The method comprises providing a liquid-permeable topsheet having opposing top and bottom surfaces in a machine direction, printing first and second print lines, and optionally a third print line, on the topsheet, providing an absorbent core in the machine direction and joining the absorbent core with the topsheet to form a multi-layered structure, forming at least one shaping element by embossing a plurality of shaping lines in the multi-layered structure from the top surface of the topsheet down into the absorbent core, the plurality of embossing shaping lines each spaced a respective distance apart from the first and second print lines in a cross-direction, and providing a liquid-impermeable backsheet in the machine direction, the backsheet arranged adjacent to the absorbent core.
[0040] When the plurality of embossing shaping lines spaced a respective distance apart from the first and second print line in the machine cross-direction, the embossing rollers are arranged such that they are offset from the location(s) where the topsheet is printed. This reduces, if not all together avoids, the possibility that ink from the print is transferred onto the embossing rollers. This particularly advantageous because it means that the embossing rollers are not soiled by the ink, which in turn, minimizes the need for downtime of the manufacturing line to clean the soiled rollers. This arrangement also minimizes, if not prevents, ink from being transferred onto the topsheet in excess and / or in one or more undesired locations.
[0041] The method may further comprise providing an optional acquisition layer between the absorbent core and the bottom surface of the topsheet. Provision of an optional acquisition layer may further assist to enhance the fluid handling characteristics of the absorbent article.
[0042] Embossing of the absorbent article is effectuated from the top down. This means that the plurality of shaping lines are embossed from the top surface of the topsheet down and into at least the layer which is directly adjacent to the topsheet.
[0043] Thus, in exemplary embodiments, the plurality of shaping lines are embossed from the top surface of the topsheet down into at least an optional acquisition layer, when present, or the absorbent core. Further, it may be preferable in certain non-limiting embodiments that the plurality of shaping lines extend through a thickness of the absorbent article between the topsheet and a bottom surface of the absorbent core. This can assist to enhance the bending of the absorbentarticle and conformance of the absorbent article to the anatomy of the wearer during use, which in turn, may also serve enhance the overall fit and comfort level of the article.
[0044] Printing of the absorbent article may be effectuated by any one or more of a number of conventional printing techniques. For example, printing may be effectuated by one of flexo printing, gravure printing, offset printing, inkjet printing, and combinations thereof.
[0045] Further objectives, features and advantages of the present absorbent article are described in the detailed description below with reference to the appended drawings.Brief description of the drawings
[0046] The present invention will be discussed in more detail below, with reference to the attached drawings, in which:
[0047] Figure 1 shows an exploded view of an exemplary absorbent article according to the present disclosure;
[0048] Figure 2 shows an embodiment of an absorbent article according to the present disclosure with a shaping element; and
[0049] Figure 3 shows an embodiment of an absorbent article according to the present disclosure with a shaping element and topsheet with print lines.Detailed description
[0050] The absorbent articles described herein are absorbent articles aimed for personal hygiene and may be, for example, a sanitary towel or napkin, a panty liner, an incontinence pad or an incontinence liner. Such articles are commonly used for the acquisition and storage of bodily exudates such as urine and menstrual fluid. The absorbent articles are preferably disposable, which means that they are intended for a single use and disposed thereafter, instead of being cleaned and reused.
[0051] An exemplary absorbent article in accordance with the present disclosure is show in an exploded view in Figure 1 , in the exemplary form of an incontinence pad. It should be understood that even though the absorbent article is described hereafter as an incontinence pad, this form is merely exemplary, and it is contemplated that the absorbent article may be provided in other forms, such as a panty liner, an incontinence liner, and a sanitary towel or napkin, and as otherwise described or referenced herein.
[0052] As shown in Fig. 1 , the absorbent article generally comprises four components: a liquid permeable topsheet 1 , an optional acquisition layer 2, an absorbent core 3, and a liquid- impermeable backsheet 4. Structurally, the acquisition layer and the absorbent core are arranged between the topsheet and the backsheet, with the acquisition layer arranged adjacent to the topsheet and the absorbent core arranged adjacent to the backsheet. Also, in this particular nonlimiting example, the absorbent core comprises two absorbent members, an upper absorbent member 3a and a lower absorbent member 3b. This arrangement will be discussed in further detail below.
[0053] The topsheet lies in direct contact with the wearer’s body and should therefore be soft and comfortable. The topsheet can comprise a nonwoven material, e.g. spunbond, meltblown, carded, hydroentangled, wetlaid etc. Suitable nonwoven materials can be composed of natural fibers, such as wood pulp or cotton fibers, man-made fibers, such as polyester, polyethylene, polypropylene, viscose, or from a mixture of natural and man-made fibers. Apertured plastic films may also be used as topsheet materials. In any case, suitable topsheet materials should be soft and non-irritating to the skin and be readily penetrable by bodily fluids, e.g. urine or menstrual fluid.
[0054] The backsheet lies in contact with the wearer’s garments. The backsheet refers to the liquid impervious material forming the outer cover of the hygiene article. The backsheet can comprise a thin plastic film, e.g. a polyethylene or polypropylene film, a nonwoven material coated with a liquid impervious material, a hydrophobic nonwoven material, which resists liquid penetration, or a laminate of a plastic film and a nonwoven material. Other laminate materials which are suitable for use as the backsheet are laminates of a nonwoven material and high loft material. The backsheet material may be breathable so as to allow vapor to escape from the absorbent core, while still preventing liquids from passing there through. Examples of breathable backsheet materials are porous polymeric films, nonwoven laminates of spunbond and meltblown layers and laminates of porous polymeric films and nonwoven materials.
[0055] In certain non-limiting embodiments, such as the absorbent article illustrated in Fig. 1 , the backsheet may optionally comprise one or more leg elastics, which are adapted to support the absorbent article in forming a particular shape during use. As can be seen in Fig. 1 , the exemplary backsheet comprises first and second side elastics 4a, 4b. The first side elastic is arranged adjacent to a first edge of the absorbent article and the second side elastic is arranged adjacent to a second edge of the absorbent article and in parallel with the first side elastic. Each side elastic has a length in the longitudinal direction (y) and the side elastics are preferably arranged to extend between the front portion and the central portion of the absorbent article. The preferred arrangement of the leg elastics may, as noted above, support the absorbent article in forming a particular shape, such as a bowl-shape, when worn by a user.
[0056] It is also contemplated that the backsheet may be provided with one or more additional optional elements, such as a release paper and / or plastic wrap (not shown). The release paper and / or plastic wrap may be used to protect the backsheet, particularly in embodiments having an adhesive or attachment element on the garment-facing side of the backsheet, during transport and / or storage of the assembled absorbent article prior to use thereof.
[0057] The acquisition layer is an optional layer that can be arranged between the topsheet and the absorbent core and may suitably be placed on top of the absorbent core. The acquisition layer is adapted to quickly receive and temporarily store discharged liquid before it is absorbed by the absorbent core. Such acquisition / distribution layers may be composed of, for example, airlaid nonwoven, spunlace nonwoven, high loft nonwoven, foam materials, and / or combinations thereof. The nonwoven material may be hydrophilic and / or a hydrophilic material may be obtained by adding surfactant. It is to be understood that the acquisition layer can be formed from any one or more ofthe aforementioned materials, however, low density nonwoven materials may be particularly preferred in certain embodiments.
[0058] The acquisition layer may be suitably dimensioned in the transverse and longitudinal directions (x, y) as desired, for example, based on the type and / or application of the absorbent article, by one of ordinary skill. In one exemplary embodiment, the acquisition layer may have a length in the longitudinal direction (y) and a width in the transverse direction (x) that are equal to or shorter than a respective length and respective width of the absorbent core.
[0059] The absorbent core is the absorbent structure of the article which acquires and stores bodily fluids and exudates. The absorbent core may be of any conventional kind. Examples of commonly occurring absorbent materials are cellulosic fluff pulp, tissue, highly absorbent polymers (so called superabsorbents), absorbent foam materials, absorbent nonwoven materials or the like. It is common to combine cellulosic fluff pulp with superabsorbent polymers in an absorbent core. Superabsorbent polymers are water-swellable, water-insoluble organic or inorganic materials capable of absorbing at least about 20 times their own weight of an aqueous solution containing 0.9 weight percent of sodium chloride. Organic materials suitable for use as a superabsorbent material can include natural materials such as polysaccharides, polypeptides and the like, as well as synthetic materials such as synthetic hydrogel polymers. Such hydrogel polymers include, for example, alkali metal salts of polyacrylic acids, polyacrylamides, polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylates, polyacrylamides, polyvinyl pyridines, and the like. Other suitable polymers include hydrolyzed acrylonitrile grafted starch, acrylic acid grafted starch, and isobutylene maleic anhydride copolymers and mixtures thereof. The hydrogel polymers are preferably lightly cross-linked to render the material substantially water insoluble. Preferred superabsorbent materials are further surface crosslinked so that the outer surface or shell of the superabsorbent particle, fiber, flake, sphere, etc. possesses a higher crosslink density than the inner portion of the superabsorbent. The superabsorbent materials may be in any form suitable for use in absorbent composites including particles, fibers, flakes, spheres, and the like. A high absorption capacity is provided by the use of high amounts of superabsorbent material. Thin absorbent cores, which are common in for example baby diapers and incontinence guards, often comprise a compressed, mixed or layered structure of cellulosic fluff pulp and superabsorbent polymers. The size and absorbent capacity of the absorbent core may thus be varied to suit different product types, such as sanitary napkins for adult incontinent persons or panty liners.
[0060] In certain embodiments, the absorbent core can be of unitary construction, whereby for example the manufacturing process can be simplified. The phrase "unitary construction" in the present context is intended to mean that the absorbent core is constructed from essentially one type of material, this being essentially the same material, or essentially the same combination of two or more materials throughout the absorbent core. Variations in density and concentration of the material may occur, but these are limited to those which may be obtained without incorporation of regions which have been formed separately and then physically joined to each other. For example, when the absorbent core comprises a matrix of hydrophilic fibers and superabsorbent material as described above, the relative concentrations of superabsorbent material and fibers may be differentin different parts of the core. However, an absorbent core of unitary construction does not comprise layers or laminates of different composition. Likewise, variations in the density or concentration of various components across the longitudinal direction, the transverse direction or the thickness direction of the absorbent core are acceptable, yet the core should not comprise areas or layers of different composition which are formed separately and later joined together.
[0061] In certain embodiments, the absorbent core can have a multi-layered structure. In this sense, the absorbent core can comprise a plurality of absorbent layers and / or absorbent members. As mentioned above, the non-limiting exemplary absorbent article shown in Fig. 1 has an absorbent core that comprises two absorbent members, an upper absorbent member 3a and a lower absorbent member 3b. In the assembled absorbent article, the upper absorbent member is arranged on top of the lower absorbent member and is adjacent to the optional acquisition layer when present or to the topsheet when there is no acquisition layer. The lower absorbent member is arranged underneath the upper absorbent member and is adjacent to the backsheet.
[0062] When the absorbent core comprises a plurality of absorbent layers and / or absorbent members, the absorbent layers and / or absorbent members may be equally sized or may differ in one or more dimensions. In the non-limiting example shown in Fig. 1 , the upper absorbent member has extensions in the transverse and longitudinal directions (x, y) that are shorter than the respective extensions of the lower absorbent member in the same directions. In this sense, the upper absorbent member can be arranged to wholly overlap with the lower absorbent member; in other words, no portion of the upper absorbent member is arranged outside of any edge of the lower absorbent member in the assembled absorbent article. However, as noted above, this example is merely exemplary and it is to be understood that the dimensions of the upper and lower absorbent members may be readily selected as desired by one of ordinary skill in the art.
[0063] Additionally, one or more of the individual components of the absorbent article, i.e., the topsheet, the acquisition layer, the absorbent core, and the backsheet may also be provided with one or more colors to enhance the visual appearance of the absorbent article and / or provide the wearer with an indication as to how the absorbent article should be oriented during use. Further, the individual components may be provided with the same color in certain embodiments or in one or more different colors in other embodiments. It is to be understood that the selection of the one or more colors for one or more of the individual components is wholly within the purview of one skilled in the art and as such can be readily selected as desired. Additionally, in certain non-limiting embodiments, it is preferable that the topsheet is partially or fully transparent. Having a topsheet that is partially or fully transparent may allow one or more layers (e.g., the absorbent core) or element(s) thereof (e.g., shaping element) arranged underneath the topsheet to be more easily visualized by the user.
[0064] An embodiment of the absorbent article is shown in plan view in Figure 2. In general, the absorbent article 10 has a width in the transverse direction (x) along a central transverse axis (X) between a first edge 104 and a second edge 105 and a length in the longitudinal direction (y) along a central longitudinal axis (Y) between a front edge 106 and a rear edge 107. Along the length, the absorbent article is divided into a front portion 101 , a rear portion 103, and a central portion 102arranged between the front and rear portions. The front, central, and rear portions are discrete portions that do not overlap with one another and together may account for the entire longitudinal length of the absorbent article.
[0065] In some embodiments, it may be preferable that the front, central and rear portions are evenly divided along the length of the absorbent article. In other words, the front, central, and rear portions may each comprise one-third (1 / 3) of the total length of the absorbent article.
[0066] In terms of dimensions, the absorbent article may have a total length in a range of from 150 to 330 mm in one exemplary embodiment. In another non-limiting embodiment, the absorbent article may have a total length in a range of from 200 to 290 mm. In any case, it is to be understood that one of skill in the art may readily select the dimension(s) of the absorbent article as desired for a particular application and / or particular type of absorbent article (e.g., incontinence pad, incontinence liner, panty liner, sanitary napkin, etc.).
[0067] Also, the absorbent article may have a generally rectangular shape with rounded edges at the front and rear edges, as shown in Fig. 2. However, it is to be understood that this generally rectangular shape is merely exemplary and the absorbent article can take the form of other shapes, as desired, and as readily selected by one of skill in the art. An exemplary absorbent article having another shape that comprises a transition region between the front and central portions in which the transverse width of the absorbent article narrows, is shown for example, in Figure 3.
[0068] Turning back to Fig. 2, the absorbent article is provided with a shaping element. The shaping element comprises a plurality of embossed shaping lines and is formed in the absorbent article by top-down embossing, that is preferably executed in at least two layers of the absorbent article. This means that the shaping element is embossed in the topsheet and at least the first layer thereunder that is arranged in direct contact with the topsheet. As mentioned above, this first layer directly underneath the topsheet may be one of an optional acquisition layer or the absorbent core. For comparative purposes, Fig. 2, for example, depicts an arrangement that does not comprise the optional acquisition layer, and the shaping element is thus formed in the topsheet and the absorbent core, whereas Fig. 1 illustrates an arrangement that does comprise the optional acquisition layer; however, not only is the shaping element formed in the topsheet and the acquisition layer, it is also shown in this non-limiting embodiment to be formed in the absorbent core, including both the upper and lower members thereof.
[0069] The shaping element comprises a first side shaping line 31 and a second side shaping line 32. These shaping lines are mirror-symmetric about the central longitudinal axis of the absorbent article. Each shaping line has a length in the longitudinal direction that extends between a respective front endpoint 31 1 , 321 in the front portion and a respective rear endpoint 312, 322 in the rear portion. Further, the first and second side shaping lines are each spaced a distance apart from the central longitudinal axis (Y) and thus do not intersect with the central longitudinal axis.As illustrated in Fig. 2, the exemplary shaping element has a maximum transverse width (wmax) between the respective front endpoints of the first and second side shaping lines. The width of the shaping element, however, tapers to a minimum transverse width (wmin) between the first and second side shaping lines in the central portion of the absorbent article. Along the remainder of theextensions of the first and second side shaping lines between the minimum width in the central portion and the respective rear endpoints, the spacing between the first and second side shaping lines may, in certain non-limiting embodiments, slightly increase; or alternatively, the spacing between the first and second side shaping lines may remain the same or essentially the same. With this arrangement of the first and second side shaping lines relative to the central longitudinal axis (Y), the shaping element exhibits a Y-like, essentially Y-like, or Y-shape. Moreover, this particular shape enables the absorbent article to conform to a high degree to the anatomy of a wearer during use, and by extension, helps to improve both the fit and function of the article.
[0070] It is also envisioned that in some embodiments, the maximum transverse width of the shaping element may be arranged in the front portion at a position other than between the respective front endpoints of the first and second side shaping lines. In this sense, the shaping element may have a maximum transverse width between any point taken along the length of the first side shaping line in the front portion and any point taken along the length of the second side shaping line in the front portion, including or excluding the respective front endpoints.
[0071] Similarly, it is also to be understood that the shaping element may have a minimum transverse width at any point between the first and second side shaping lines in either the central portion or the rear portion. Whether the minimum transverse width is located in the central portion or the rear portion of the absorbent article can be readily chosen, as desired, by one of ordinary skill in the field,
[0072] The shaping element promotes preferential bending of the article during use and thus the fit of the article can be improved in both the front and the rear of the article. More specifically, the shaping element assists to create bending in the form of a bowl-like shape, primarily in the front portion where the shaping element has the maximum width. However, the bowl-like shape may partially extend into in the central portion towards the minimum transverse width. Not only is the bowl-like shape advantageous from a fit perspective since it conforms to the anatomy of a wearer, especially the flattened forward portion of the genitalia of female users, but the bowl-like shape also provides a primary inlet zone for bodily fluids and / or exudates. This primary inlet zone, also referred to as an inlet pillow, facilitates the capture and distribution of rapid and often relatively large insults of bodily fluids and / or exudates.
[0073] In the rear portion of the absorbent article, the shaping element assists to improve the fit of the article by having the first and second side shaping lines arranged so they are aligned or essentially aligned, during use, with crease-like regions in the buttocks and / or perineum of the user.
[0074] Additionally, the shaping element may further comprise a transverse rear shaping segment. The transverse rear shaping segment is arranged to connect the first and second side shaping lines across the central longitudinal axis (Y) in the rear portion. In certain non-limiting embodiments, the transverse rear shaping segment is preferably curved or rounded in shape. Such an arrangement is shown, for example, in Fig. 2. However, it is to be understood this arrangement is not intended to be particularly limiting and it is also contemplated that the first and second side shaping lines may simply terminate at the respective rear points and without connection across the central longitudinal axis (Y).
[0075] In certain embodiments, such as the exemplary absorbent article illustrated in Fig. 2, the plurality of embossed shaping lines may further comprise a front shaping line 33, which may further assist with the creation of bending of the article in the form of a bowl-like shape. The front shaping line is arranged in the front portion and is mirror-symmetric about the central longitudinal axis (Y) The front shaping line has a midpoint that intersects with the central longitudinal axis (Y) and extends outward from the midpoint at an angle (a) , to respective first and second front free ends 331 , 332. This angle is preferably acute and in a range of from 5 to 45 degrees.
[0076] The front shaping line is arranged between first and second side shaping lines in the front portion of the absorbent article. In this regard, the first and second front free ends are each spaced a respective distance apart from the first and second side shaping lines in the transverse direction (x). Besides, the front shaping line is thus arranged more proximal or closer to the central longitudinal axis (Y) than any either of the first and second side shaping lines in the front portion. The extensions of the front shaping line between the midpoint and the first and second front free ends preferably terminate at a position in the longitudinal direction (y) that is below the position of the respective front end points of the first and second side shaping lines. In this sense, the respective front endpoints of the first and second side shaping lines are arranged closer to both the first and second edges as well as to the front edge than the first and second front free ends of the front shaping line. However, it is also contemplated that, in certain embodiments, the front shaping line may extend further from the midpoint such that the first and second front free ends are arranged in parallel or essentially in parallel, but still spaced a distance apart from, the respective front endpoints of the first and second side shaping lines in the transverse direction (x).
[0077] As mentioned above, the embossed shaping lines of the shaping element are preferably formed by top-down embossing. The topsheet and at least one layer underneath directly in contact with the topsheet are therefore compressed downward in the direction towards the backsheet. Depending on the type and / or preferred application of the absorbent article desired, the embossed shaping lines may extend through a thickness of the absorbent article between the topsheet and a bottom surface of the absorbent core. In other words, all of the layers of the absorbent article except for the backsheet may comprise the plurality of embossed shaping lines in certain non-limiting embodiments.
[0078] The shaping lines may be straight or essentially straight lines produced by means of a groove or line compression tool having a shape of a straight line, or alternatively the shaping lines may be curved and produced by a correspondingly shaping groove or compression tool. Due to the nature of compressible materials used in the absorbent articles, minor variations in the absorbent article may occur. It is further envisioned that the shaping line described herein may also constitute lines in which material has been removed.
[0079] Further, the shaping lines may take the form of either continuous or discontinuous lines. For continuous lines, a shaping line may comprise a single line segment that is preferably uninterrupted or broken between its endpoints. When provided as a discontinuous line, a shaping line may comprise a plurality of line segments, which are preferably spaced some distance apart from any adjacent line segment.
[0080] Figure 3 shows a plan view of another absorbent article according to the present disclosure and similar to the exemplary absorbent article shown in Fig. 2. Here, the absorbent article is shaped with a wider front portion and a transition region between the front portion and the central portion in which the transverse width of the absorbent article tapers from a maximum transverse width to a minimum transverse width. Like the example absorbent article of Fig. 2, this exemplary absorbent article also has generally rectangular shape with rounded front and rear edges.
[0081] The absorbent article of Fig. 3 has a topsheet that comprises first and second print line 1 1 , 12. Each print line has a length in the longitudinal direction (y) that extends between the front and rear portions and are mirror-symmetric about the central longitudinal axis (Y). Further, the first print line is arranged in parallel with the first side shaping line, and the second print line is likewise arranged in parallel with the second shaping line. In this regard, the print lines essentially follow or trace the Y-like or Y-shape of the shaping element. Having the print lines arranged in parallel but not overlapping or intersecting with the shaping lines assists to highlight the location of the shaping element to the user. By drawing attention to the area bounded by the shaping element, a sense of the fit and / or a heightened level of security against leakage provided by the article may be conveyed to the user. This may, in turn, further serve to enhance confidence in the article and / or the wellbeing of the user.
[0082] The first and second print lines are each also spaced a respective distance apart from the plurality of embossed shaping lines and from each other. In one non-limiting embodiment, the print lines are each spaced a distance of from 1 to 10 mm, preferably 1 to 6 mm, apart from any of the plurality of the embossing shaping lines in the transverse direction (x). Having the print lines spaced a distance apart from the plurality of embossed shaping lines has advantages from a manufacturing perspective. Because both the print and the embossing are applied to the topsheet and by having them spaced a distance apart from each other minimizes, if not all together avoids, the possibility of the print ink being transferred onto the embossing rollers.
[0083] In some embodiments, such as the one shown in Fig. 3, the topsheet of the absorbent article may also comprise a third print line 13. The third print line is arranged in the front portion, in parallel with the front shaping line. Like the front shaping line, the third print line has a midpoint that intersects with the central longitudinal axis (Y) and extends outward therefrom at an angle toward the first and second edges of the absorbent article. As the third print line is arranged in parallel with the front shaping line, it may also be considered to extend outward from the midpoint in the direction of the first and second front free ends of the front shaping line. Additionally, the third print line is spaced a respective distance apart from the plurality of embossed shaping lines of the shaping element as well as the first and second print lines. In one exemplary, non-limiting embodiment, the third print line is spaced a distance of from 1 to 10 mm, preferably 1 to 6 mm, apart from any of the plurality of the embossing shaping lines in the transverse direction (x), and a distance of from 1 to 10 mm, preferably 1 to 6 mm, apart from the front shaping lines in the longitudinal direction (y).
[0084] In any embodiment of the absorbent articles described herein, the print lines are arranged relative to the embossed shaping lines of the shaping element and so as to avoid overlap or intersection therewith. In certain embodiments, at least one of the print lines may be arranged in anarea bordered by the plurality of the embossed shaping lines. In Fig. 3, for example, the first, second, and third print lines are all arranged in the area bordered by the first side shaping line, the second side shaping line, and the front shaping line. However, it is also envisioned that in other embodiments, at least one of the print lines is arranged outside of the area bordered by the plurality of embossed shaping lines. In any case, it is to be understood that the print lines do not intersect with or cross over any of the embossed shaping lines, nor do any of the print lines extend to any edge of the absorbent core.
[0085] The respective extensions or lengths of the individual print lines may vary from embodiment to embodiment of the absorbent articles described herein. It is envisioned that any one or more of the print lines may be shorter than, longer than, or equal in length to the embossed shaping line to which it is arranged in parallel. Whether the print line(s) is / are longer, shorter, or equal in length to the shaping line(s) may be readily determined by one of skill in the art as desired.
[0086] For example, the absorbent article of Fig. 3, the front shaping line has a length that is longer than the third print line. In this embodiment, the first side shaping line has a length that is longer than the first print line which it parallels, and similarly, the second side shaping line has a length that is longer than the second print line which it parallels.
[0087] Further, the print lines may take the form of either continuous or discontinuous print lines. For continuous lines, a print line may comprise a single line segment that is preferably uninterrupted or broken between its endpoints. For discontinuous lines, a print line may comprise a plurality of line segments and / or a plurality of discrete dots, such as for example circular or oval shaped dots, which are preferably spaced some distance apart from any adjacent line segment and / or discrete dot.
[0088] The present disclosure also relates to a method for manufacturing the absorbent articles described herein. In particular, a liquid-permeable topsheet having opposing top and bottom surfaces is provided in the machine direction. As used herein, the top surface of the topsheet is to be understood as the surface that faces the user of the assembled absorbent article. Stated differently, the top surface is the side that is meant to be arranged closest to the user’s skin during use of the absorbent article. It further follows that the bottom surface of the topsheet as used herein is to be understood as the surface that faces the absorbent core of the assembled absorbent article, In other words, the bottom surface is the side that is arranged on an inside of assembled absorbent article and would not contact the user’s skin during use of the absorbent article.
[0089] At least first and second print lines are printed on the topsheet. In certain embodiments, an optional third print line may also be printed on the topsheet. Printing of the optional third print line may occur at the same time that the first and second print lines are being printed on the topsheet, or alternatively, may occur during a separate, additional printing step.
[0090] An absorbent core is also provided in the machine direction and joined with the topsheet to form a multi-layered structure. The absorbent core can be provided before or after the topsheet is printed. In either case, the print may be suitably applied to the bottom surface of the topsheet and may even be preferable in certain embodiments for ease of manufacturing and / or such that theprint / ink is provided on a side of the topsheet that does not contact the user’s skin during use of the absorbent article.
[0091] Once the topsheet and absorbent core have been joined together to form the multi-layered structure, at least one shaping element is formed therein. The at least one shaping element is formed by embossing a plurality of shaping line in the multi-layered structure from the top surface of the topsheet downward into the absorbent core. Here, the plurality of embossed shaping lines are each spaced a respective distance apart from the first and second print lines in the crossdirection. As previously mentioned, because the print lines and the embossed shaping lines offset from one another, the embossing rollers are also offset from the locations on the topsheet in which the ink applied. This is particularly advantageous because such an arrangement means that it possible to minimize, if not all together avoid, transfer of ink onto the embossing rollers. By extension, this reduces the possibility of stray ink marks on the topsheet and / or downtime of the line for cleaning the ink soiled embossing rollers. Further, a liquid-impermeable backsheet is provided in the machine direction, arranged adjacent to the absorbent core and joined therewith.
[0092] In some embodiments, the method may further comprise the provision of an optional acquisition layer between the absorbent core and the bottom surface of the topsheet.
[0093] When the absorbent article is provided with the optional acquisition layer, the plurality of shaping lines are embossed from the top surface of the topsheet down into at least the acquisition layer. Additionally, it may be preferable in some embodiments, whether with or without the optional acquisition layer, that the embossed shaping lines extend through the thickness of the absorbent article between the topsheet and the bottom surface of the absorbent core; Fig. 1 illustrates one such example with the optional acquisition layer.
[0094] Additionally, printing on the topsheet may be effectuated by one or more printing techniques known to those of skill in the art. The printing thus may be performed by any conventional method(s) such as those including but not limited to flexo printing, gravure printing, offset printing, inkjet printing, and combinations thereof.
[0095] Although the exemplary embodiments illustrated in Figs. 1 -3 depict an absorbent article without wings, it is to be understood that variant(s) of an absorbent article in accordance with the present disclosure can be provided with wings. Moreover, while the above discussion has been exemplified through an incontinence pad, an absorbent article in accordance with the present disclosure may nevertheless be provided in the form of other absorbent articles including but not limited to incontinence liners, panty liners, and sanitary napkins or towels.
[0096] While the invention has been described herein by reference to certain embodiments, it is to be understood that modifications in addition to those described herein may be made to the structures and techniques described herein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Accordingly, although specific embodiments have been described, they are examples only and are not limiting upon the scope of the invention.
