Description

[0001] Method and device for separating particles comprising plastic particles of different compositions

[0002] TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0003] The invention relates to a method and a device for separating particles comprising plastic particles of different compositions. More specifically, the invention relates to a method having the features of the preamble of independent claim 1 and a device for carrying out such a method having the features of the preamble of claim 13.

[0004] STATE OF THE ART

[0005] For the separation of particles comprising plastic particles of different compositions, the use of a so-called electrostatic separator is known. In an electrostatic separator, the particles are electrostatically charged, for example, by means of an electrical discharge, and then divided into different fractions depending on their specific electrostatic charges and / or electrical conductivities.

[0006] It is known that the moisture content of plastic particles has a significant influence on their electrostatic chargeability. Therefore, particles comprising plastic particles that have been in contact with a liquid must be dried in an electrostatic separator before they are separated. This applies, for example, and in particular, if the particles were previously suspended in the liquid in order to differentiate them according to their density using this liquid. All plastic particles must typically be dried to a maximum of 0.2 percent residual moisture by weight so that they can then be separated according to their composition using an electrostatic separator. In order to ensure that all plastic particles contained in the particles have this low residual moisture content, drying the particles requires a long drying time and / or a large amount of energy.

[0007] A method having the features of the preamble of independent patent claim 1 and a corresponding device having the features of the preamble of patent claim 13 are known from DE 20 2021 000 353 U1.

[0008] OBJECT OF THE INVENTION

[0009] The invention is based on the object of providing a method for separating particles comprising plastic particles of different compositions, having the features of the preamble of independent patent claim 1 and a device for carrying out such a method, having the features of the preamble of patent claim 13, which have a reduced energy requirement for drying the particles.

[0010] SOLUTION

[0011] According to the invention, the object is achieved by a method having the features of independent patent claim 1 and a device having the features of patent claim 13. Preferred embodiments of the method according to the invention are defined in patent claims 2 to 12, and preferred embodiments of the device according to the invention are defined in patent claims 14 to 18.

[0012] DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0013] In the method according to the invention for separating particles comprising plastic particles of different compositions, the particles, which were previously in contact with a liquid, are subjected to drying to remove the liquid from them. After drying, the particles are subjected to an electrostatic charge. The particles are then divided into different fractions depending on their specific electrostatic charges and / or electrical conductivities, with the particles of one of the different fractions having no electrostatic charges. At least a part of this one fraction, the particles of which do not have electrostatic charges, the part comprising residually moist plastic particles from the liquid, is again subjected to drying and subsequent electrostatic charging and then divided into the various fractions depending on the specific electrostatic charges and / or electrical conductivities of its particles.

[0014] Electrostatic charges here refer to the net charges of the particles resulting from the sum of the positive and negative electrostatic charges. A particle having no electrostatic charge includes the case where the electrostatic charge of the particle is so small that, within the scope of the method according to the invention, the particle is indistinguishable from a particle with an electrostatic charge of exactly zero.

[0015] In one fraction, the particles of which have no electrostatic charges (i.e., they were never electrostatically charged in the first place or quickly lost their electrostatic charges), there are plastic particles whose residual moisture content is too high to be electrostatically charged. These residually moist plastic particles cannot therefore be separated from other particles due to their plastic composition and the resulting dielectric properties. In the process according to the invention, at least a portion of the one fraction whose particles have no electrostatic charges (namely, the portion comprising the plastic particles residually moist from the liquid) is subjected to another drying process and subsequent electrostatic charging, and is then divided into the various fractions based on the specific electrostatic charges and / or electrical conductivities of its particles. This can be easily achieved by adding this portion of one fraction to the particles undergoing initial drying. During the subsequent drying process, the residual moisture content of the plastic particles, which were electrostatically charged when first separated into fractions because their residual moisture content was still too high, is reduced. This reduced residual moisture content can lead to these plastic particles becoming electrostatically charged to such an extent and for such a long time during the subsequent electrostatic charging that they are not reclassified into one fraction, whose plastic particles exhibit no electrostatic charge, but rather into another fraction depending on their plastic composition and the resulting dielectric properties.

[0016] With this approach, drying, to which all particles are subjected at least once, can be carried out relatively quickly and with relatively low energy consumption. This approach accepts the fact that not even close to all of the plastic particles contained are dried to a residual moisture content sufficient for electrostatic separation. Instead, the process ensures that the plastic particles still retaining residual moisture are subjected to a further drying process as selectively as possible, meaning that additional energy is used for drying only for these residually moist particles.Because a great deal of energy can be saved in this way during the drying process to which all particles are subjected, a high energy advantage is achieved even if some of the particles are subjected to more than two drying processes, even if these particles are not all residually moist plastic particles, but due to other properties end up in the fraction whose particles do not have electrostatic charges.

[0017] The fraction whose particles do not exhibit electrostatic charges includes not only plastic particles with high residual moisture content in the liquid, but also metal particles or plastic particles with a high metal content, and plastic particles with plastic made electrically conductive in some other way. Although these particles can be partially electrostatically charged, they then lose their charges very quickly, so they are assigned to one fraction as particles without electrostatic charges.

[0018] In order to ensure that only residually moist plastic particles from or with the one fraction whose particles do not exhibit electrostatic charges are subjected to further drying and subsequent processing steps, ferromagnetic and / or electrically conductive particles can be separated before the portion of one fraction is subjected to further drying. The ferromagnetic and / or electrically conductive particles can only be separated after the one fraction has been separated and / or before the particles.

[0019] Ferromagnetic particles, which include ferromagnetic plastic particles as well as ferromagnetic metal particles, can be separated using an electromagnet, for example. This corresponds to the functionality of a well-known magnetic separator.

[0020] Electrically conductive particles can be separated, for example, by inducing eddy currents in the electrically conductive particles. The eddy currents generate a magnetic field, so that the electrically conductive particles are accelerated away from other, i.e., non-electrically conductive particles through interaction with an external magnetic field. This corresponds to the functioning of a well-known eddy current separator. In the simplest case, the particles are moved through a magnetic field in the direction perpendicular to the field lines, with the electrically conductive particles being selectively decelerated according to the principle of an eddy current brake. The separation of the ferromagnetic and the electrically conductive particles can, in principle, take place simultaneously, i.e., for example, using the same electromagnet.

[0021] Furthermore, particles can be separated from one fraction or even beforehand that have a different electrical polarizability than the plastic particles with residual moisture in the liquid, before at least part of one fraction is subjected to further drying. This can be achieved by moving the particles through an inhomogeneous external electric field in order to deflect the particles differently depending on their electrical polarizability through interaction with the inhomogeneous external electric field. The external electric field causes an electrical polarization of the particles, which also depends on whether the particles are plastic particles with residual moisture. Depending on the polarization caused, the inhomogeneous external electric field, in which the field strength has a pronounced gradient, exerts different forces on the particles. These different forces deflect the particles moved by the inhomogeneous external electric field differently. This allows for further selection of the residually moist plastic particles, which are ideally subjected to another drying process. Separation based on different polarizability can be performed simultaneously with the separation of ferromagnetic and / or electrically conductive particles, i.e., within a combined separation device.

[0022] In the process according to the invention, the residually moist plastic particles, which constitute the portion of one fraction that is subjected to further drying as completely as possible, can be selected particularly easily if the particles, especially before they are brought into contact with the liquid, are adjusted to a particle size in the range of 1 mm to 10 mm with an accuracy of + / - 1.5 mm or better. In this way, the particles have, for example, at least approximately equal specific surface areas that are wetted with the liquid, which must be dried again, and at which the particles can be electrostatically charged.

[0023] The particles can be brought into contact with the liquid by suspending them in the liquid to separate them from other particles based on their density. Instead, or in addition, the particles can be brought into contact with the liquid to wash the particles with the liquid. Furthermore, the particles may have come into contact with the liquid inadvertently during outdoor storage or otherwise.

[0024] The particles can be dried by heating them and the liquid, for example, by convection and / or infrared radiation, to evaporate the liquid. Alternatively or additionally, the particles can be dried by blowing dry air over them and the liquid, which absorbs and carries away the evaporating liquid. Furthermore, the pressure in the vicinity of the particles can be reduced to promote evaporation of the liquid. Furthermore, adhering liquid can be removed from the particles at the beginning of the drying process, for example, by suction or centrifugation, without evaporation.

[0025] To subject the particles to electrostatic charging, they can be rubbed against each other and / or exposed to an electrical discharge. Other possibilities for electrostatically charging particles are known to those skilled in the art.

[0026] After electrostatic deposition, the particles can be conveyed using a grounded metal conveyor. The fraction whose particles do not have electrostatic charges then falls from the front end of the conveyor. As already mentioned, the particles in this fraction include not only particles that were not electrostatically charged at all, but also particles that lose their charges through contact with the grounded metal conveyor.

[0027] With an additional dielectric conveyor arranged at a free distance above the grounded metal conveyor, which is therefore made of a dielectric material, particularly on its surface, plastic particles with high specific electrostatic charges and low electrical conductivities can be conveyed away. These plastic particles are attracted away from the grounded metal conveyor by the dielectric conveyor and then transported away adhering to its surface.

[0028] An apparatus according to the invention for carrying out the method according to the invention comprises a dryer configured to subject the particles that were previously in contact with the liquid to drying. A charging device of the apparatus is configured and arranged to subject the particles to an electrostatic charge after drying in the dryer; and a fractionating device of the apparatus is configured and arranged to divide the particles, after electrostatic charging in the charging device, into different fractions depending on their specific electrostatic charges and / or electrical conductivities, wherein the particles of one of the different fractions have no electrostatic charges.Furthermore, the device according to the invention comprises a return device which is configured and arranged to return at least a part of the one fraction, the particles of which do not have electrostatic charges, the part comprising residually moist plastic particles, back to the dryer or to a further dryer which is connected to the charging device in order to subject the part of the one fraction again to drying and a subsequent electrostatic charging with subsequent division into the various fractions.

[0029] The device may further comprise a metal separator configured and arranged to separate ferromagnetic and / or electrically conductive particles from one fraction before the portion of the one fraction is subjected to further drying. This metal separator may comprise an electromagnet and / or an eddy current separator.

[0030] Furthermore, the device can comprise a separation device configured and arranged to separate particles from one fraction that have a different electrical polarizability than the plastic particles remaining moist from the liquid, before the portion of one fraction is subjected to further drying. The separation device can generate an inhomogeneous electric field to deflect the particles to varying degrees depending on their electrical polarizability through interaction with the inhomogeneous external electric field. In practice, this separation device can be combined with a metal separator to form a single separation device.

[0031] In addition, the device can have a comminutor and a classifying device which are designed and arranged to adjust the particles, before they are brought into contact with the liquid, to a particle size in the range of 1 mm to 10 mm with an accuracy of at least + / - 1.5 mm and better at least + / - 1.0 mm. In addition, a gravity separator can be provided which is designed to separate the particles suspended in the liquid from other particles on the basis of their density. Alternatively or additionally, a washing device can be provided which is designed to wash the particles with the or another liquid.

[0032] Further preferred embodiments of the device according to the invention result from the preferred embodiments of the method according to the invention.

[0033] Advantageous further developments of the invention emerge from the patent claims, the description and the drawings.

[0041] Fig. 2 illustrates a concrete embodiment of an electrostatic separator for use in the method and apparatus according to Fig. 1.

[0042] FIGURE DESCRIPTION

[0043] Fig. 1 illustrates an embodiment of the method according to the invention and at the same time the structure of a device 1 according to the invention. A starting material 2 consists of objects of different sizes and different compositions. In a particle size setting 3, the starting material 2 is adjusted to a uniform particle size with the aid of a comminutor and a classifying device 4. The comminutor can have a grinder, and the classifying device can use sieves. The resulting particles 5 have a size that is as uniform as possible in the range from 1 to 10 mm with an accuracy of at least + / - 1.5 mm. In a magnetic separation 6 in a magnetic separator 7, ferromagnetic particles 8 are separated from the particles 5.The ferromagnetic particles 8 include not only ferromagnetic metal particles but also plastic particles 5, which are rendered ferromagnetic by the addition of ferromagnetic metal particles. In a subsequent density separation 9 in a gravity separator 10, the particles 5 are separated into particles of different densities in a liquid 11, for example, water. In the present example, floating particles 12 have a density of less than 1 g / cm. 3separated and further processed in another way. The remaining particles 5 are subjected to drying 13 in a dryer 14. Electrically conductive particles 17 are removed by eddy current separation 15 in an eddy current separator 16. The electrically conductive particles 17 include, in addition to non-ferromagnetic metal particles, particles made of electrically conductive plastics. The remaining particles 5 are essentially plastic particles 25 and are subjected to an electrostatic charge 19 in a charging device 18 so that they become electrostatically charged as far as possible. This is followed by a fractionation 20 of the particles 5 depending on their electrostatic charges in a fractionation device 21.

[0044] The resulting fractions 22 to 24 of particles 5 comprise a fraction 22 into which residually moist plastic particles 25' fall, which, due to their residual moisture content in the liquid 11, were not electrostatically chargeable in the electrostatic charge 19 or quickly lost their charge again due to their residual moisture. If there is no eddy current separation 15 upstream of the electrostatic charge 19, the electrically conductive particles 17 also fall into fraction 22, and if there is no magnetic separation 6 upstream, the ferromagnetic particles 8, at least insofar as they are also electrically conductive particles, also fall into fraction 22. In these cases, the electrically conductive particles 17 and / or the magnetic particles 8 can be separated from fraction 22 using a magnetic separator 7 or an eddy current separator 16.

[0045] Before the plastic particles 25 of fraction 22 are returned by a return device 39 to the drying unit 13 in the dryer 14, plastic particles 36 that are not electrostatically chargeable as such can also be separated from the plastic particles 25 of fraction 22 in an electric field separator 37 by means of separation 38 in an electric field with a pronounced gradient of the electric field strength. The separation of the plastic particles 36 that are not electrostatically chargeable as such from the residually moist plastic particles 25' occurs due to their polarization properties. This separation 38, like the eddy current separation 15 and the magnetic separation 6, can take place at an earlier point in time, but in particular after the eddy current separation 15 and the magnetic separation 6, so that it at least essentially only separates plastic particles 36 that are not electrostatically chargeable as such. From fraction 22, only the residually moist plastic particles 25' are returned to the drying stage 13 in the dryer 14, if possible. The further drying stage 13 in the dryer 14 serves to reduce the residual moisture of the residually moist plastic particles 25' to such an extent that the subsequent renewed electrostatic charging 19 results in a charging based on the composition of the plastic particles 25, so that their subsequent separation into fractions 23 and 24 can also be carried out based on the composition of the plastic particles 25.

[0046] By returning the residually moist plastic particles 25' to the drying unit 13, the drying unit 13 can be adjusted so that it does not set a residual moisture content of 0.2 percent by weight for all particles 5 passing through once, as is typically required for successful electrostatic separation by electrostatic charging 19 and subsequent fractionation 20 depending on the specific electrostatic charges and / or electrical conductivities of the plastic particles 25. Rather, the drying unit 13 can be optimized with regard to its energy requirements, consciously accepting that a larger proportion of the particles 5 do not reach the residual moisture content of 0.2 percent by weight during a single pass through the drying unit 13.At least insofar as these are plastic particles 25, however, they are collected as residually moist plastic particles 25' during fractionation 20 in fraction 22 and returned to the drying 13. In practice, this can achieve a significant energy saving for drying of at least 10%, in some cases even at least 20%, which is of considerable importance for the economic efficiency of the overall process.

[0047] Fig. 2 illustrates a specific embodiment of an electrostatic separator 26. The electrostatic separator 26 comprises the charging device 18 for the electrostatic charging 19 of the particles 5 in the form of plastic particles 25. The charging device 18 can, for example, have a conveyor screw rotating in a casing made of dielectric material, which also consists of dielectric material, so that the particles 5 rub against one another in the charging device 18 and thus become electrostatically charged. An electrostatic charging 19 of the particles 5 by friction can also be caused in a vibrating conveyor or in a material vortex flow. Alternatively, the charging device 18 can expose the particles 5 to a high-voltage electrical discharge in order to electrostatically charge the particles 5.The particles 5, which are electrostatically charged as far as possible, are conveyed onto a metal conveyor belt 27 of the fractionation device 21, which is grounded. On this conveyor belt 27, all electrically conductive particles 5 lose their charges. Thus, electrically conductive particles fall from the front end 28 of the conveyor belt 27 into a container 29 for fraction 22.

[0048] In the same way, the residually moist plastic particles 25' fall into container 29 because they were either not electrostatically charged in the charging device 18 or because they also lost their charge on the grounded metallic conveyor belt 27. Plastic particles 25 that cannot be electrostatically charged for other reasons also end up in fraction 22. The next fraction 23 of the particles adheres to the underside of the grounded metallic conveyor belt 27 due to their specific electrostatic charges and is brushed from there into a container 31 with a brush device 30. Particles charged to particularly large specific electrostatic charges are attracted upwards away from the conveyor belt 27 by a conveyor belt 32 made of a dielectric, which is arranged at a free distance 33 above the conveyor belt 27, and are brushed from the conveyor belt 27 with a brush device 34 into a container 35 for fraction 24.Thus, plastic particles 25 made of silicone enter fraction 24. Other electrostatically chargeable plastic particles 25, however, are found in fraction 23. Instead of using brush devices 30 and 34, the respective electrostatically charged particles 5 can also be removed from the respective conveyor belt 27 or 32 by applying an electric field.
