Description

FIBER FIXTURE AND FIBER LASERTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] This disclosure relates to the technical field of fiber lasers, in particular to a fiber fixture and a fiber laser comprising the fiber fixture.BACKGROUND ART

[0002] A typical fiber laser usually comprises an alignment light path, multiple pump sources, a resonant cavity, and a beam combiner for coupling alignment light from the alignment light path and pump light from the multiple pump sources into the resonant cavity. The resonant cavity typically comprises a high-reflectivity Bragg grating, a gain fiber, and a low-reflectivity Bragg grating. As a result of the incomplete reflection of the high-reflectivity Bragg grating in the resonant cavity, signal light generated within the resonant cavity, unabsorbed residual pump light and / or Raman light generated by the entire oscillation system may pass through the high-reflectivity Bragg grating and then be transmitted through the fiber core in a reverse direction to the alignment light path. For example, for a 3kW fiber laser, the power of such reversely transmitted light may exceed 100W, which will damage the optical fiber, the alignment light source and even the entire oscillation system, severely affecting the reliability and stability of the fiber laser.

[0003] To address the above problem of reverse transmission of light, a solution commonly used at present is to add multiple turns of fiber windings and a cladding mode stripper between the alignment light path and the resonant cavity to remove the reversely transmitted light. However, such a winding structure has limited effect on eliminating the reversely transmitted light, and a large amount of reversely transmitted light still remains in the fiber core after passing through the winding structure. There is also a solution to introduce a long-period fiber grating between the alignment light path and the resonant cavity to remove the reversely transmitted light from the fiber core, and this long-period fiber grating is usually obtained by using techniques such as CO2 ablation, ultraviolet lithography, electrode discharge, excimer laser etching, etc., which obviously will increase the manufacturing complexity and cost of the fiber laser. It can be seen that there is still much room for improvement in the prior art in eliminating reversely transmitted light in the fiber laser.

[0045] Specifically, the first clamping surface 111 and the second clamping surface 121 each comprise at least one wave-shaped clamping section matched with each other to form at least one corresponding wave-shaped clamping section of the curved clamping section 1A, wherein each wave-shaped clamping section may include at least three wave-like segments, and each wave-like segment has a radius of curvature dependent on a grating period for coupling light of a corresponding target wavelength from a fiber core of the clamped optical fiber into a cladding. As shown in FIG. 5, R is the radius of curvature of the wave-like segment, θ is a central angle of the wave-like segment, preferably with a value less than or equal to 90°, lz is a chord length corresponding to the wave-like segment, Λ is the grating period for coupling the light of the corresponding target wavelength from the fiber core of the clamped optical fiber into the cladding, and m is an integer greater than 1, wherein R is determined in such a manner that the parameters of the wave-like segment satisfy the following relationship:

[0046] wherein

[0047] The main dimensions of the wave-like segment including the radius of curvature and the central angle are thus determined.

[0048] In the clamped optical fiber located at such a curved clamping portion 1A of the fiber fixture 1, light of the corresponding target wavelength can be coupled from the fiber core into the cladding, while light of non-target wavelengths is not affected.

[0049] The curved clamping portion 1A of the fiber fixture 1 may include only one wave-shaped clamping section of a single size, or may include more than one wave-shaped clamping section of different sizes. Taking an application scenario in the fiber laser as an example, the fiber fixture 1 may have only one wave-shaped clamping section for only one of the reversely transmitted signal light, residual pump light and Raman light, or may include two or three wave-shaped clamping sections of different sizes to couple one or more of the reversely transmitted signal light, residual pump light and Raman light in the clamped optical fiber from the fiber core into the cladding. Multiple wave-shaped clamping sections may be continuous in the circumferential direction, which can be easily achieved by appropriately arranging multiple wave-like segments of different sizes.

[0050] As described above, in a preferred exemplary embodiment, the curved winding surface 112 as the second section of the first clamping block 11 constitutes the curved winding portion 1B, which is adapted to be wound around by an optical fiber, of the fiber fixture 1 according to the exemplary embodiment of the disclosure. The light within a bandwidth including the target wavelength in the fiber core of the optical fiber section wound around the curved winding portion 1B will be greatly attenuated by the simple bending of the optical fiber, and its attenuation is inversely proportional to a bending diameter D of the curved winding surface 112. However, it is not the case that the smaller the bending diameter D the better. The tensile strength of the optical fiber itself must also be taken into consideration. As a rule of thumb, the bending diameter D of the curved winding surface 112 is selected to be more than 200 times the diameter of the clamped optical fiber. With the additional curved winding portion 1B, the light of the target wavelength in the fiber core can be greatly attenuated first outside the curved clamping portion 1A, thereby further improving the overall stripping efficiency of the light of the target wavelength in the fiber core.

[0051] In one example of use, the optical fiber can be wound by one circle around the entire first clamping block 11 in a state where the first clamping block 11 and the second clamping block 12 are separated by a certain distance as shown in FIG. 4, and its winding start point and winding end point are both located on the curved winding portion 1B and there may be a circumferentially overlapping optical fiber portion between the two points depending on the situation. Subsequently, the first clamping block 11 is moved along its positioning track 113 towards the boss portion 12A of the second clamping block 12 until the optical fiber is clamped between the first clamping surface 111 and the second clamping surface 112, and then the position of the first clamping block 11 relative to the second clamping block 12 is locked by the position locking mechanism 13, such as by tightening the bolt 131, thereby achieving the clamping of the optical fiber by the fiber fixture 1.

[0052] The fiber fixture according to the disclosure is not limited to the above structure. For example, the fiber fixture may only have a fiber clamping portion without a fiber winding portion, which means that the optical fiber passes through the curved clamping portion only, without additionally winding around the first clamping block 11. Alternatively, the fiber fixture may have an additional fiber winding portion which, for example, may be formed as a protruding ring that further protrudes along the axial direction of the first clamping block 11 with the bending diameter D of the curved winding portion 1B, and the optical fiber may also be wound around, in addition to the first section and the second section of the first clamping block 11 for one circle, the protruding ring for the required number of circles without passing through the curved clamping portion. In addition, when the curved clamping portion has multiple wave-shaped clamping sections, the multiple wave-shaped clamping sections are not limited to the arrangement in the circumferential direction, and some or all of them may also be arranged in the axial direction. In this case, the optical fiber needs to be wound around the first clamping block 11 for a corresponding number of circles, and each of the circles extends along an axially arranged section. For this purpose, a flange or groove may also be provided on the two clamping surfaces as fiber tracks.

[0053] FIG. 6 shows a schematic diagram of main parts of a fiber laser 100 according to an exemplary embodiment of the disclosure. FIG. 7 shows a schematic diagram of the structure of a fiber laser 100 according to an exemplary embodiment of the disclosure. As shown in FIGS. 6 and 7, the disclosure further relates to a fiber laser 100, which at least comprises an alignment light module 20, a reverse light isolation module 30 and a resonant cavity module 40, wherein the reverse light isolation module 30 is arranged between the alignment light module 20 and the resonant cavity module 40 and comprises a long-period grating assembly 31, which consists of at least one fiber fixture 1 according to the embodiments of the disclosure and a clamped optical fiber, and a cladding mode stripper 32.

[0054] The alignment laser module 20 is, for example, a red alignment light laser which emits a red alignment light of, for example, 650 nm. The alignment light from the alignment laser module 20 is input from the side of the cladding mode stripper 32 into the reverse light isolation module 30, and is input into the resonant cavity module 40 after passing through the reverse light isolation module 30. A reversely transmitted fiber core laser beam from the resonant cavity module 40 is input from the side of the long-period grating assembly 31 into the reverse light isolation module 30 and is coupled in the long-period grating assembly 31 from the fiber core into the cladding, and then eliminated from the cladding by the cladding mode stripper 32, thereby being prevented from damaging the alignment light source and even the entire optical path system.

[0055] In an exemplary embodiment, the long-period grating assembly 31 may comprise only one fiber fixture 1, the curved clamping portion 1A of which at least has one wave-shaped clamping section designed mainly for the wavelength of the signal light, so that the long-period grating assembly 31 at least comprises one long-period grating configured to couple the reversely transmitted signal light originating from the resonant cavity module 40 into the cladding, and such a long-period grating usually can also couple a considerable portion of the pump light and Raman light in the fiber core that have a wavelength relatively close to that of the signal light into the cladding, where the proportion of the signal light coupled into the cladding is undoubtedly the largest. Therefore, in general, it is sufficient to provide the fiber laser with only one fiber fixture designed mainly for the signal light. Certainly, the fiber fixture 1 may also have two further wave-shaped clamping sections designed mainly for the pump light and the Raman light, respectively, so that the long-period grating assembly 31 can additionally comprise two long-period gratings mainly configured to couple the reversely transmitted pump light and Raman light into the cladding. In this case, the clamped optical fiber is arranged to be wound for at least one circle around the first clamping block 11 of the fiber fixture 1 having the first clamping surface 111 and the curved winding surface 112 running continuously in the circumferential direction so as to be clamped by the corresponding wave-shaped clamping sections of the curved clamping portion 1A at the first clamping surface 111.

[0056] In other embodiments, the long-period grating assembly 31 may also comprise two or three fiber fixtures 1 with the curved clamping portions 1A with different configurations in the number, size parameters and / or arrangements of the curved clamping sections, or comprise more fiber fixtures 1 as needed, as long as the multiple fiber fixtures 1 overall include the required wave-shaped clamping sections, mainly the wave-shaped clamping section for the signal light, so as to achieve the corresponding long-period gratings capable of coupling lights of different target wavelengths into the cladding, and the specific number and configuration are not particularly limited.

[0057] In an exemplary embodiment, the resonant cavity module 40 comprises a forward pump source 41, a forward beam combiner 42, a high-reflectivity Bragg grating 43, a gain fiber 44, a low-reflectivity Bragg grating 45, a reverse beam combiner 46, a reverse pump source 47, a further cladding mode stripper 48 and an output head 49 arranged in order along a forward output direction of the alignment light module. The forward pump source 41 and the reverse pump source 47 are semiconductor lasers with optical fiber-coupled output, providing pump light with a wavelength of 976 nm, and the numbers of which are m1 and m2, respectively, wherein m1 and m2 may be equal or unequal. The pump sources are coupled from the side of the high-reflectivity Bragg grating 43 and the side of the low-reflectivity Bragg grating 45 into the resonant cavity composed of the high-reflectivity Bragg grating 43, the gain fiber 44 and the low-reflectivity Bragg grating 45 through the forward beam combiner 42 and the reverse beam combiner 47 configured as (n+1) ×1 combiner, respectively, wherein n is greater than the larger one of m1 and m2, and the configuration of the two beam combiners may also be different as needed. The pump light with a wavelength of 976 nm is converted in the resonant cavity by the gain fiber 44 into signal light with a wavelength of 1080 nm (Ytterbium-doped double-cladded fiber) or a wavelength of 1550 nm (Erbium-doped double-cladded fiber) , and the signal light is highly reflected (with reflectivity ≥ 99%) at the high-reflectivity Bragg grating 43 and is low reflected (with reflectivity ≤ 10%) at the low-reflectivity Bragg grating 45 in order to be output from the resonant cavity, and then output from the output head 49 after passing through the further cladding mode stripper 48. Correspondingly, the long-period grating assembly 31 of the reverse light isolation module 30 is configured to couple, through one or more fiber fixtures 1 comprised therein, the pump light of a target wavelength of 976 nm, the signal light of 1080 nm or 1550 nm and the corresponding Raman scattered light into the cladding, which are then stripped from the cladding by the cladding mode stripper 32.

[0058] In an exemplary embodiment, the fiber laser 100 further comprises a mode field adapter 50 arranged between the alignment light module 20 and the reverse light isolation module 30.

[0059] According to the various embodiments of the disclosure, a desired long-period grating can be provided simply by adding the fiber fixture 1 according to the embodiments of the disclosure at a suitable position of the optical fiber of the fiber laser, thereby blocking and eliminating undesired reversely transmitted light so as to avoid the alignment light source from being damaged by the returned light, lower the possibility of fiber fuse, and reduce the SRS effect of the system. In addition, since the fiber fixture 1 according to the present disclosure is a mechanical component with a stable structure, it can provide uniform, stable, reliable, and reproducible bending of the optical fiber, thereby providing a fiber laser 100 with more stable performance. Moreover, the fiber fixture 1 according to the present disclosure is easy to manufacture and install for use, and it has low cost.

[0060] While specific embodiments of the disclosure have been described in detail here, they have been presented only for the purpose of explanation and should not be construed as limitations on the scope of the disclosure. Various substitutions, changes and modifications can be devised without departing from the spirit and scope of the disclosure.
