Description

OPTICAL TRANSMITTER AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING OPTICAL TRANSMITTERTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The disclosure relates to the field of optical communications, light machines, and optical projection machines. The disclosure relates to an optical transmitter and a method for manufacturing such optical transmitter and particularly, to a solution to reach 3D coupling and quick joining.BACKGROUND

[0002] In the production of projection optical machine, a lens part or also referred to as optical part has to be adjusted to a holder part which is used to hold the lens part or optical part. For fixing the adjusted lens part to the holder part high-cost glue such as Ultraviolet (UV) glue is required. For adjusting the lens part to the holder part and ensuring coupling in different directions, in particular horizontal direction, and angle direction, a spacing between lens part and holder part is needed. The spacing, however, makes it impossible to use laser welding to connect lens part to holder part. Using UV glue has disadvantages of high cost, e.g., about 50 CNY / g corresponding to 6, 36 Euro / g, and long curing time, that means longer than 120 minutes or even still longer depending on the type of glue. This results in high-cost, complex and slow manufacturing process.SUMMARY

[0003] This disclosure provides a solution for an optical transmitter useable for a projection optical machine that can be produced without the above-described disadvantages. The disclosure further provides a method for manufacturing such an optical transmitter.

[0004] The foregoing and other objects are achieved by the features of the independent claims. Further implementation forms are apparent from the dependent claims, the description and the figures.

[0005] Embodiments of the disclosure present a solution for an optical transmitter where an adapter part (Part C) is used to connect holder part (Part A) and lens part, also referred to as optical part (part B) . Adapter part C covers lens part B and holder part A (partly) to provide area for joining. In one embodiment, the joint between adapter part C and holder part A can be a round connection, e.g., as shown in Figures 1 and 2, for example a concentric circle, to ensure angle adjustment without gap. Lens part B can slide in adapter part C in horizontal direction without gap. This design enables 3D adjustment without gap between holder part A and adapter part C, as well as between lens part B and adapter part C, which makes it possible for a consequent quick joining such as laser welding process.

[0006] With such new design, the gap between lens part B and adapter part C as well as between holder part A and adapter part C is eliminated, which is a pre-condition for a consequent laser welding process. With a laser process, the long curing time and high glue cost can be avoided.

[0007] In this disclosure, optical transmitters, optical communication devices and projection optical machines are described. An optical communication system uses an optical transmitter, which encodes a message into an optical signal, a channel, which carries the signal to its destination, and an optical receiver, which reproduces the message from the received optical signal. Both, optical transmitter and optical receiver are optical communication devices.

[0008] A projection optical machine or image projector is an optical device that projects an image (or moving images) onto a surface, commonly a projection screen. Most projectors create an image by shining a light through a small transparent lens or multiple such lenses.

[0009] According to a first aspect, the disclosure relates to an optical transmitter comprising: an optical part carrying at least one optical lens configured to transmit an optical signal; a holder part for holding the optical part; wherein the optical part is aligned in a certain position relative to the holder part based on a transmission efficiency criterion of the optical transmitter; and an  adapter part fixing the optical part in the certain position relative to the holder part; wherein the adapter part comprises at least one first fixing section that is fixing the holder part to the adapter part by first laser welds; and wherein the adapter part comprises at least one second fixing section that is fixing the optical part to the adapter part by second laser welds. Such an optical transmitter can be used for a projection optical machine. The optical transmitter can be produced without using UV glue and thus can be produced at low cost and no or at least only short curing time.

[0010] In an exemplary implementation of the optical transmitter, the holder part is arranged along a longitudinal axis; wherein the at least one optical lens is aligned with an optical axis of the optical part; and wherein in the certain position relative to the holder part, the optical axis of the optical part is adjusted with regard to a tilt of the optical axis against the longitudinal axis of the holder part, a rotation of the optical axis against the longitudinal axis and a transversal movement of the optical part with respect to the holder part.

[0011] This design enables 3D adjustment without gap between holder part and adapter part, as well as between optical part and adapter part. The optical transmitter can thus be produced by a quick joining such as laser welding process.

[0012] In an exemplary implementation of the optical transmitter, the holder part comprises an opening formed along the longitudinal axis of the holder part; wherein the optical part is partially inserted into the opening of the holder part.

[0013] Such opening of the holder part allows to insert the optical part into the opening and adjusting the optical part in the opening during production stage. The opening supports adjustment of the optical part during production stage since the optical part is free moveable inside the opening before the optical part and holder part are fixed to the adapter part.

[0014] In an exemplary implementation of the optical transmitter, a surface shape of the adapter part is matching a surface shape of the holder part along the at least one first fixing section without having any gaps; and a surface shape of the adapter part is matching a surface shape of the optical part along the at least one second fixing section without having any gaps.

[0015] This allows to apply laser welding since laser welding requires surfaces without spaces in between. Thus, the laser welds can be efficiently produced by laser welding which produces solid and tight laser welds.

[0016] In an exemplary implementation of the optical transmitter, in the certain position of the optical part relative to the holder part, a gap opens up at an interface between the optical part and the holder part.

[0017] By such a gap positioning and adjusting of the optical part in the holder part is enabled during production of the optical transmitter.

[0018] In an exemplary implementation of the optical transmitter, a depth of the gap along the interface between the optical part and the holder part is based on the alignment of the optical part relative to the holder part.

[0019] Such depth is large enough to allow positioning and adjusting of the optical part in the holder part during a production stage of the optical transmitter. Hence, the optical part can be optimally placed in the holder part with respect to the transmission efficiency criterion described above.

[0020] In an exemplary implementation of the optical transmitter, the holder part comprises a spherical body configured to enable a 3-dimensional alignment of the optical part relative to the holder part; or the holder part comprises a cylindrical body configured to enable a 3-dimensional alignment of the optical part relative to the holder part.

[0021] By such shape, a 3-dimensional alignment of the optical part is possible with degrees of freedom in every direction in order to support an optimal alignment of the optical part relative to the holder part.

[0022] In an exemplary implementation of the optical transmitter, the optical transmitter comprises: a first glue layer applied at an interface of the holder part with the adapter part, the first glue layer being configured to fix the holder part to the adapter part and / or a second glue layer applied at an interface of the optical part with the adapter part, the second glue layer being configured to fix the optical part to the adapter part.

[0023] The first and second glue layers can be but do not have to be UV glues. They can also consist of any other glue material, for example glue material with short curing time. The first and second glue layers support a fixing of the holder part and the optical part, respectively, to the adapter part.

[0024] In an exemplary implementation of the optical transmitter, the first glue layer is applied at a different or a same position of the adapter part than the first fixing section; and / or the second glue layer is applied at a different or a same position of the adapter part than the second fixing section.

[0025] This results in a tight and robust fixing of the respective parts to each other.

[0026] In an exemplary implementation of the optical transmitter, the adapter part is additionally fixed to the optical part by one or more thread connections.

[0027] This results in a higher strength of the connection due to the additionally fixing by thread connections.

[0028] In an exemplary implementation of the optical transmitter, the holder part is formed rotationally symmetrical with respect to the longitudinal axis of the holder part; and the optical part is formed rotationally symmetrical with respect to the optical axis of the optical part.

[0029] By such shape, the optical part can be easily inserted into the holder part during production of the optical transmitter.

[0030] In an exemplary implementation of the optical transmitter, the adapter part and the optical part are made at least in a contact area around the at least one second fixing section of plastic; and the adapter part and the holder part are made at least in a contact area around the at least one first fixing section of plastic.

[0031] Plastic parts can be easily produced and they are well suited for laser welding to produce the laser welds.

[0032] In an exemplary implementation of the optical transmitter, the adapter part has a step-shaped profile with a first step embedding the first fixing section and a second step embedding the second fixing section.

[0033] Such as step shaped profile is well suited for fixing the optical part by the first step and for fixing the holder part, which is holding the optical part and is therefore wider than the optical part, by the second step. The second step usually is wider than the first step.

[0034] According to a second aspect, the disclosure relates to a method for manufacturing an optical transmitter the method comprising: providing an optical part carrying at least one optical lens configured to transmit an optical signal; providing a holder part for holding the optical part; aligning the optical part in a certain position relative to the holder part based on a transmission efficiency criterion of the optical transmitter; and fixing the optical part in the certain position relative to the holder part by an adapter part; wherein the fixing comprises laser welding the adapter part to the holder part by first laser welds at one or more first fixing sections; and laser welding the adapter part to the optical part by second laser welds at one or more second fixing sections.

[0035] With such new production method, the gap between optical part and adapter part as well as between holder part and adapter part is eliminated, which is a pre-condition for a consequent laser welding process. With a laser process, the long curing time and high glue cost can be avoided.

[0036] In an exemplary implementation of the method, the method comprises: arranging the holder part along a longitudinal axis; and adjusting an optical axis of the optical part with regard to the longitudinal axis of the holder part before the fixing.

[0037] This method allows to adjust the optimal position for the lenses of the optical part and then to fix this position by welding both, the optical part and the holder part to the adapter part.

[0038] In an exemplary implementation of the method, adjusting the optical axis comprises:

[0039] adjusting the optical axis with regard to a tilt of the optical axis against the longitudinal axis of the holder part, a rotation of the optical axis against the longitudinal axis and a transversal movement of the optical part with respect to the holder part. This design enables 3D adjustment without gap between holder part and adapter part, as well as between optical part and adapter part. The optical transmitter can thus be produced by a quick joining such as laser welding process.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0040] Further embodiments of the disclosure will be described with respect to the following figures, in which:

[0041] Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram illustrating a cross section of an optical transmitter 100 according to a first embodiment;  Figure 2 shows a schematic diagram illustrating a cross section of an optical transmitter 200 according to a second embodiment; and

[0042] Figure 3 shows a schematic diagram illustrating a method 300 for manufacturing an optical transmitter according to the disclosure.DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS

[0043] In the following detailed description, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof, and in which is shown by way of illustration specific aspects in which the disclosure may be practiced. It is understood that other aspects may be utilized and structural or logical changes may be made without departing from the scope of the disclosure. The following detailed description, therefore, is not to be taken in a limiting sense, and the scope of the disclosure is defined by the appended claims.

[0044] It is understood that comments made in connection with a described method may also hold true for a corresponding device or system configured to perform the method and vice versa. For example, if a specific method step is described, a corresponding device may include a unit to perform the described method step, even if such unit is not explicitly described or illustrated in the figures. Further, it is understood that the features of the various exemplary aspects described herein may be combined with each other, unless specifically noted otherwise.

[0045] Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram illustrating a cross section of an optical transmitter 100 according to a first embodiment. The optical transmitter 100 comprises an optical part 110 (also referred to as lens part in above description) carrying at least one optical lens 111a, 111b, 111c configured to transmit an optical signal.

[0046] The optical transmitter 100 comprises a holder part 120 for holding the optical part 110. The optical part 110 is aligned in a certain position 112, 113, 114 relative to the holder part 120 based on a transmission efficiency criterion of the optical transmitter 100.

[0047] Such transmission efficiency criterion may mean that the optical signal is optimally transmitted by the optical transmitter, for example, optimally formed by the optical lens (es) at the transition to fiber optic with respect to a minimum loss of light power, or optimally formed for producing respective light beams by an optical light machine with respect to producing sharp images at a screen.

[0048] The optical transmitter 100 comprises an adapter part 130 fixing the optical part 110 in the certain position 112, 113, 114 relative to the holder part 120. The adapter part 130 comprises at least one first fixing section 132 that is fixing the holder part 120 to the adapter part 130 by first laser welds 134. Figure 1 shows one exemplary first fixing section 132, but any other number of such first fixing sections 132 may be used as well. The adapter part 130 comprises at least one second fixing section 131 that is fixing the optical part 110 to the adapter part 130 by second laser welds 133. Figure 1 shows one exemplary second fixing section 131, but any other number of such second fixing sections 131 may be used as well.

[0049] The holder part 120 is arranged along a longitudinal axis 121 as shown in Figure 1. The at least one optical lens 111a, 111b, 111c is aligned with an optical axis 116 of the optical part 110 as seen from Figure 1.

[0050] In the certain position 112, 113, 114 relative to the holder part 120, the optical axis 116 of the optical part 110 may be adjusted with regard to a tilt 112 of the optical axis 116 against the longitudinal axis 121 of the holder part 120, a rotation 113 of the optical axis 116 against the longitudinal axis 121 and / or a transversal movement 114 of the optical part 110 with respect to the holder part 120 as shown in Figure 1.

[0051] The holder part 120 may comprise an opening 122 that may be formed along the longitudinal axis 121 of the holder part 120 as shown in Figure 1. The optical part 110 may be at least partially inserted into the opening 122 of the holder part 120. A surface shape 135a of the adapter part 130 may match a surface shape 125a of the holder part 120 along the at least one first fixing section 132 without having any gaps as shown in Figure 1, at least no gaps that exceed a specific size, in particular a specific size that prohibits the use of laser welding.

[0052] A surface shape 135b of the adapter part 130 may match a surface shape 115b of the optical part 110 along the at least one second fixing section 131 without having any gaps as shown in Figure 1, at least no gaps that exceed a specific size, in particular a specific size that prohibits the use of laser welding.

[0053] In the certain position 112, 113, 114 of the optical part 110 relative to the holder part 120, a gap 124 opens up at an interface 125b, 115a between the optical part 110 and the holder part 120. Such a gap 124 may be large enough to allow positioning and adjusting of the optical part 110 in the holder part 120 during a production stage of the optical transmitter, but in a range that prohibits laser welding between the holder part 120 and the optical part 110 during the production stage.

[0054] A depth of the gap 124 along the interface 125b, 115a between the optical part 110 and the holder part 120 may be based on the alignment of the optical part 110 relative to the holder part 120. That means, the depth is large enough to allow positioning and adjusting of the optical part 110 in the holder part 120 during a production stage of the optical transmitter.

[0055] The holder part 120 may comprise a spherical body 125 as shown in Figure 1 configured to enable a 3-dimensional 112, 113, 114 alignment of the optical part 110 relative to the holder part 120. As mentioned above, such alignment has been performed during the production stage of the optical transmitter 100.

[0056] Alternatively, the holder part 120 may comprise a cylindrical body 125 configured to enable a 3-dimensional 112, 114, 121b alignment of the optical part 110 relative to the holder part 120. As mentioned above, such alignment has been performed during the production stage of the optical transmitter 100.

[0057] The optical transmitter 100 may comprise a first glue layer applied at an interface of the holder part 120 with the adapter part 130. The first glue layer may be configured to fix the holder part 120 to the adapter part 130. The first glue layer can be but does not have to be an UV glue. It can also consist of any other glue material, for example glue material with short curing time. The optical transmitter 100 may comprise a second glue layer applied at an interface of the optical part 110 with the adapter part 130. This second glue layer may be configured to fix the optical part 110 to the adapter part 130. The second glue layer can be but does not have to be an UV glue. It can also consist of any other glue material, for example glue material with short curing time.

[0058] The first glue layer may be applied at a different or a same position of the adapter part 130 than the first fixing section 132. In the latter, the first glue layer may strengthen the first laser welds 134.

[0059] The second glue layer may be applied at a different or a same position of the adapter part 130 than the second fixing section 131. In the latter, the second glue layer may strengthen the second laser welds 133.

[0060] As shown in the example of Figure 1, the holder part 120 may be formed rotationally symmetrical with respect to the longitudinal axis 121 of the holder part 120. The optical part 110 may be formed rotationally symmetrical with respect to the optical axis 116 of the optical part 110.

[0061] The adapter part 130 and the optical part 110 may be made at least in a contact area around the at least one second fixing section 131 of plastic, for example, polymers such as acrylics, polyesters, silicones, polyurethanes and halogenated plastics. Such plastics may comprise thermoplastics such as polyethylene (PE) , polypropylene (PP) , polystyrene (PS) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) , etc.

[0062] The adapter part 130 and the holder part 120 may be made at least in a contact area around the at least one first fixing section 132 of plastic, for example the above-described types of plastic.

[0063] As shown in Figure 1, the adapter part 130 may have a step-shaped profile 137, 138 with a first step 138 embedding the first fixing section 132 and a second step 137 embedding the second fixing section 131. The first step 138 may at least partially embed the optical part 110 and at least partially the holder part 120 and the second step 137 may embed part of the optical part 110.

[0064] In the following, further implementations of the optical transmitter 100 according to the first embodiment are described.

[0065] As shown in Figure 1, this structure enables the adjustment of optical part B to holder part A in 4 directions: tilt 112 in X and Y directions (for example several degrees, not unlimited) , rotate 113 (unlimited) and move 114 in Z direction 121. All the movements are performed for optical alignment. During the alignment, 0-gap is ensured between optical part B and adapter part C, as well as between holder part A and adapter part C. 0-gap is the precondition for laser welding of optical part B to  adapter part C and holder part A to adapter part C. Connection between holder part A and adapter part C can also be cylindrical, to enable tilting in X direction 121c without gap and sliding in Y and Z direction 121b, 121 without gap.

[0066] An advantage of such an optical transmitter 100 is the 0 gap after alignment, which makes it possible to use laser welding as connection method. With laser welding the long curing time and high glue cost can be avoided.

[0067] Figure 2 shows a schematic diagram illustrating a cross section of an optical transmitter 200 according to a second embodiment. The structure of the optical transmitter 200 according to the second embodiment corresponds to the structure of the optical transmitter 100 according to the first embodiment as described above with respect to Figure 1.

[0068] Additionally, the adapter part 130 is fixed to the optical part 110 by one or more thread connections 201 as shown in Figure 2, e.g., implemented by screw connections.

[0069] This second embodiment allows to avoid press force to move the optical part 110 in Z direction 121.

[0070] In the following, further implementations of the optical transmitter 200 according to the second embodiment are described. Between lens part / optical part B and adapter part C can be screw connections or thread connections, for example. Hence, lens part / optical part B is screwed into adapter part C to adjust the optical transmitter in Z direction.

[0071] This second embodiment allows to avoid press force to move optical part B in Z direction.

[0072] The solution described in this disclosure, i.e., both embodiments described above, can be applied in optical transmitters, head-up displays (HUD) and projection light machines and many other applications.

[0073] Applying such solution allows to reduce joining times, for example from 120 min per piece down to about 9 seconds per piece due to avoidance of dispensing and curing. In particular use of expensive UV glue can be avoided.

[0074] Figure 3 shows a schematic diagram illustrating a method 300 for manufacturing an optical transmitter according to the disclosure.

[0080] While a particular feature or aspect of the disclosure may have been disclosed with respect to only one of several implementations, such feature or aspect may be combined with one or more other features or aspects of the other implementations as may be desired and advantageous for any given or particular application. Furthermore, to the extent that the terms "include" , "have" , "with" , or other variants thereof are used in either the detailed description or the claims, such terms are intended to be inclusive in a manner similar to the term "comprise" . Also, the terms "exemplary" , "for example" and "e.g. " are merely meant as an example, rather than the best or optimal. The terms “coupled” and “connected” , along with derivatives may have been used. It should be understood that these terms may have been used to indicate that two elements  cooperate or interact with each other regardless whether they are in direct physical or electrical contact, or they are not in direct contact with each other.
