The present invention provides a rotor comprising: an annular rotor core centered on an axis of rotation and having two magnet insertion holes corresponding to one magnetic pole and a rib extending radially about the axis of rotation between said two magnet insertion holes; and a permanent magnet inserted into each of the two magnet insertion holes and having a width and a thickness in a plane orthogonal to the axis of rotation. Each magnet insertion hole has a first vacant portion on the side that is more radially outward than the permanent magnet and adjacent to the rib. In the plane orthogonal to the axis of rotation, an inner peripheral edge of the first vacant portion has a first arc portion adjacent to the rib. Let the width direction be defined as direction of the width of the permanent magnet, in which case the first vacant portion has a width W1 in the width direction. The width W1 of the first vacant portion and a curvature radius R1 of the first arc portion satisfy 0.5 < R1 / W1 ≤ 0.92.
