Abstract
Description
PORTABLE COOLERCROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION
[0001] This application claims the benefit of priority of United States Provisional Application No. 63 / 696,161, filed September 18, 2024, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.BACKGROUNDTechnical Field
[0002] This disclosure relates to storage containers having insulation. In some embodiments, portable coolers are described having multiple storage compartments. Background Information
[0003] Coolers are used to regulate internal temperatures. Coolers with ice, ice packs, or the like, may be used to keep their contents at a temperature below an external or ambient temperature. Further, coolers, despite their name, may also be used with warming elements, such as heating pads or the like, to maintain an internal temperature above an external or ambient temperature.
[0004] Hard (that is, structurally rigid or inflexible) coolers may be cumbersome in some environments. For example, hard coolers may be uncomfortable to hold or carry, may be challenging to pack into a vehicle or the like, and may present an unpleasant physical or sensory experience to those who come into contact with them. Further, the inflexible shape and dimensions of a hard cooler can be a disadvantage and challenge given their various uses and varying contents.
[0005] Some coolers may contain two different compartments. Such a design potentially poses other problems. For example, there is a risk that fluids (e.g., water, beverages, other liquids, etc. ) will leak from one compartment to the other. This may affect items in one container that should be kept dry. Further, items stored in one compartment (e.g., fish, clothes, etc. ) may have strong odors, and those odors may potentially travel to the other compartment, thus negatively affecting the contents of the other compartment.
[0006] While some of these problems may be attempted to be addressed using an impermeable barrier between the two compartments (e.g., a barrier that is waterproof, thermally insulating, and odor-isolating) , this poses problems as well. For example, with such an impermeable barrier, temperature control (e.g., cooling) from one compartment will not reach the other compartment. Thus, separate temperature control elements (e.g., ice, ice packs, heating pads, etc. ) would be needed for each compartment. This approach would be inefficient, require potentially multiple temperature control elements, add weight, and take up space.
[0007] In addition to these problems, coolers are passive devices. That is, coolers lack features such as interior or external illumination, integrated batteries, power generators, and communications capabilities. Because coolers lack these features, they fail to satisfy various needs of users.
[0008] Solutions are needed to address these and other challenges, as discussed further below.SUMMARY

In contrast to Fig. 2A, where ice or heating pack 203 and strap 202 were illustrated as attached to interior cover 204, in Fig. 2B ice or heating pack 206 and strap 205 are connected to the inside of front panel 201. In such an embodiment, as discussed above, it may not be necessary to have interior cover 204. Further, in such embodiments if interior cover 204 is used, it may not need to have its own ice or heating pack.
[0171] Fig. 3A illustrates an exemplary portable storage container 300 with carrying straps 301, in accordance with disclosed embodiments. In accordance with above embodiments, portable storage container 300 and its attributes, components, and functionality may resemble those of portable storage containers 100 and 200. For example, portable storage container 300 may have a front opening 306 with a closable perimeter that can be opened and closed via zippers 305.
[0172] Carrying straps 301 may be attached to portable storage container 300 to enable a user to wear portable storage container 300 like a backpack. In some embodiments, carrying straps 301 may comprise a single strap, such as a strap to be worn on one shoulder. Alternatively, as illustrated in Figs. 3A and 3B, two carrying straps 301 may be used, for wearing on both shoulders. Alternatively, portable storage container 300 may have other carrying mechanisms, such as a handle, grip, hook, loop, or the like. Carrying straps 301 may be attached to a rear surface of portable storage container 300 (as shown) , or may be attached to a lid or cover (e.g., top surface) of portable storage container 300.
[0173] As illustrated, portable storage container 300 may secure its straps 301 to a back wall, or to a base, of portable storage container 300 via one or more fasteners 302. Such fasteners may attach to bottom fasteners 304 of straps 301. As disclosed herein, such fasteners may be, as examples, VelcroTM, buttons, rope or knots, zippers, hook-and-loops, clasps, eyelets, snaps, kiss lock clasps, twist locks, tuck locks, drawstrings, or the like.
[0174] As also shown in Figs. 3A and 3B, portable storage container 300 may also include one or more stability straps 303 connecting between straps 301. In such embodiments, stability straps 303 may provide additional stability and comfort to a user carrying portable storage container 300. Such stability straps 303 may close at a middle point via one or more fastener 307, which may be VelcroTM, buttons, rope or knots, zippers, hook-and-loops, clasps, eyelets, snaps, kiss lock clasps, twist locks, tuck locks, drawstrings, or the like. For added comfort and durability, portable storage container 300 may also include padding along all or part of its backside 308. Such padding may facilitate carrying by a user, whose back may come in contact with backside 308. Such padding may encompass an upper portion of backside 308 (e.g., a top half, third, fourth, etc. ) , a middle portion of backside 308 (e.g., a middle third, fourth, etc. ) , a bottom portion of backside 308 (e.g., a bottom half, third, fourth, etc. ) , or may encompass all of backside 308. Such padding may include one pad extending across backside 308, or may include multiple pads arranged across backside 308. The padding may be implemented using, for example, a foam, a gel, a fabric, a spring, a rubber, or the like. Similarly, all or part of straps 301 themselves may be padded too. In some embodiments, the padding may be substantially flat as it extends along backside 308. In other embodiments, the padding may be curved outwardly along backside 308 to provide increased comfort and lumbar support for a user carrying portable storage container 300.
[0175] In further embodiments, backside 308 may be curved or rounded. For example, backside 308 may be curved to align with the shape of a person’s back. By curving backside 308 in this manner, the force of the backside 308 may be better distributed (causing less user pain or discomfort) than if backside 308 was flat. Further, in some embodiments padding on backside 308 may include multiple panes or angles of pads, which may also align with the curve of a user’s back.
[0176] Fig. 4A illustrates an exemplary portable storage container 400 with a side carrying pouch, in accordance with disclosed embodiments. In accordance with above embodiments, portable storage container 400 and its attributes, components, and functionality may resemble those of portable storage containers 100, 200, and 300.
[0177] As illustrated, portable storage container 400 may include one or more side straps 401 and one or more outer strap 402, which may function to hold an object 403 such as a bottle or other object. Consistent with above embodiments, side straps 401 and outer strap 402 may be elastic straps, bands, covers, enclosures, or the like. Alternatively, side straps 401 and outer strap 402 may be inelastic. In some embodiments, side straps 401 and outer strap 402 may be closable (e.g., VelcroTM, buttons, rope or knots, zippers, hook-and-loops, clasps, eyelets, snaps, kiss lock clasps, twist locks, tuck locks, drawstrings, or the like) . While in Fig. 4A side straps 401 and outer strap 402 are depicted as located on a left wall of portable storage container 400, in other embodiments side straps 401 and outer strap 402 may be located in other places along the body of portable storage container 400 (e.g., a right wall, an upper surface on the top cover, etc. ) .
[0178] Fig. 4B illustrates an exemplary portable storage container 400 with a side pocket 404, in accordance with disclosed embodiments. Consistent with above embodiments, side pocket 404 may be opened and closed via a closing mechanism 405, such as a zipper with grasping mechanism 407. In other embodiments, other closing mechanisms may be used for side pocket 404, such as VelcroTM, buttons, rope or knots, zippers, hook-and-loops, clasps, eyelets, snaps, kiss lock clasps, twist locks, tuck locks, drawstrings, or the like. In some embodiments, side pockets 404 may be attached to the sidewall of portable storage container 400 using an adhesive patch, sewing, or any other connection means.
[0179] As discussed above, in some embodiments side pocket 404 provides access to a storage area external to the internal (top and bottom) storage compartments of portable storage container 400. Such an external storage container may allow for non-insulated (or, alternatively, insulated) storage of items. Alternatively, side pocket 404 may allow access (e.g., via closing mechanism 405) directly to the upper or lower storage compartment of portable storage container 400. Thus, for example, in such embodiments, side pocket 404 may allow a user to reach into the top or bottom storage compartment to access a stored item (e.g., an item being cooled or heated, or simply stored) .
[0180] Fig. 5 illustrates an exemplary zipper arrangement 500 for a portable storage container, in accordance with disclosed embodiments. In accordance with above embodiments, zipper arrangement 500 may be used with portable storage containers 100, 200, 300, and 400. For example, zipper arrangement 500 may be used with a front access opening, an upper lid, a side pouch, or another component of portable storage containers 100, 200, 300, and 400.
[0181] As shown in Fig. 5, front and side profiles of a dry zone zipper pull 501 are illustrated. As described herein, the dry zone of portable storage containers 100, 200, 300, and 400 may refer to the lower storage compartment. By contrast, the upper storage compartment may be a wet or non-dry storage compartment (e.g., it may contain ice, fish, wet materials, etc. ) . Of course, in other embodiments the two storage compartments may be the opposite, where the dry zone is the upper storage compartment and the wet or non-dry storage compartment is the lower storage compartment. For example, it may be advantageous for the dry zone to be in the lower storage compartment for cold applications and it may be advantageous for the wet zone to be in the lower storage compartment for hot applications. As also illustrated, main zipper pull 502 is shown in front and side profiles. Main zipper pull 502 may be used to open and close the main or upper storage compartment (e.g., via its lid or cover, as illustrated above) . Further, side zipper pull 503 shows front and side profiles of a zipper that may be used to open and close side pouches, as disclosed above. In some embodiments, one or more of zippers 501 / 502 / 503 may be water-resistant or waterproof. Of course, other types of zippers, and other types of fasteners (as discussed above) may be used instead of the illustrated zippers 501 / 502 / 503. Examples of water-resistant or waterproof zippers may include those of YKKTM, TRUTM, or various others.
[0182] Additional embodiments of such zippers are illustrated in Figs. 10, 11A-B, and 12A-B. In particular, Fig. 10 illustrates an exemplary zipper pull 1000 for a portable storage container, in accordance with disclosed embodiments. Zipper pull 1000 may have a pulling part 1001 and loop part 1002, as discussed above. As shown in Figs. 11A-B, exemplary zipper pull 1100 may have pulling part 1101, loop part 1102, and zipper clasp 1103 having center portion 1104 for a portable storage container. Figs. 12A-B illustrate an exemplary double zipper pull 1200 having pulling parts 1201 / 1202, loop parts 1203, and zipper clasps 1204 / 1205.
[0183] Fig. 6A illustrates an exemplary portable storage container 600 with open top and bottom compartments, in accordance with disclosed embodiments. In accordance with above embodiments, portable storage container 600 and its attributes, components, and functionality may resemble those of portable storage containers 100, 200, 300, and 400.
[0184] As illustrated, portable storage container 600 may include front access 601, as discussed above in connection with prior embodiments. Front access 601 may comprise an opening in the insulative layer within the sidewalls of portable storage container 600. While front access 601 may be openable from the right, left, top, or bottom, the illustrated embodiment allows front access 601 to open from the top. Accordingly, its fastening (e.g., fabric hinge, mechanical hinge, etc. ) may be located along its bottom. Front access 601 may include an interior protrusion 602, which may be formed of a padded or insulated material. According to various embodiments, interior protrusion 602 may fit in contact with interior mouth 603 when front access 601 is closed, to provide a closed, waterproof, and insulated barrier. In some embodiments, this may be reversed, and interior mouth 603 may fit in contact with interior protrusion 602 to provide a closed, waterproof, and insulated barrier. In addition to providing insulation performance, the use of interior protrusion fitting in contact with interior mouth 603 may provide additional structural stability to portable storage container 600. That is, if interior protrusion 602 and interior mouth 603 are formed of a firm material (e.g., reinforced with a hard plastic, metal, or the like) , they may add structural stability to the front wall of portable storage container 600. Additionally, interior protrusion 602 and interior mouth 603 may create a waterproof seal for lower storage compartment 604. In some embodiments, interior protrusion 602 and interior mouth 603 may have a soft or pliable outer material (e.g., rubber, etc. ) but a firm inner material. Further, in some embodiments interior protrusion 602 and interior mouth 603 may include an insulating material.
[0185] When opened, front access 601 may allow access to lower storage compartment 604. As discussed above, lower storage compartment 604 may be separated from upper storage compartment 608 by one or more dividers or middle layers. This divider or middle layer is discussed further in connection with Fig. 6B, below. Just as interior protrusion 602 may fit in contact with interior mouth 603 when front access 601 is closed, the lid or cover 605 may be structured similarly. That is, lid or cover 605 may have an interior protrusion 606 that may fit in contact with interior mouth 609 when lid or cover 605 is closed. As discussed above, interior protrusion 606 may be in contact with interior mouth 609, thus providing enhanced insulation. Interior protrusion 606 may also provide insulation to upper storage compartment 608 when lid or cover 605 is not closed in a fully secured position. For example, interior protrusion 606 may provide insulation to upper storage compartment 608 when lid or cover 605 is not zippered, latched, strapped, or otherwise fully secured in a closed position. Further, this may provide additional structural stability to lid or cover 605, insofar as interior protrusion 606 may be formed with an interior material (e.g., hard plastic, metal, etc. ) that provides structural rigidity. As with interior protrusion 602 and interior mouth 603, interior protrusion 606 and interior mouth 609 may be formed with a soft or pliable outside material (e.g., rubber, etc. ) and a firm inner material. Further, in some embodiments interior protrusion 606 and interior mouth 609 may be formed with insulation embedded. Lid or cover 605 may also include an interior surface 607, which may be an insulation material, or may embed an insulation material. Alternatively, in embodiments where all or part of portable storage container 600 is not insulated, no insulation material may be used. In some embodiments, interior surface 607 may also include a strap or other retention band that may hold an ice or heating pack. For example, interior surface 607 may include a strap, such as strap 202 as depicted in Fig. 2A, which may hold or retain an ice or heating pack against interior surface 607. In other embodiments, the ice or heating pack and strap may be attached to an interior wall (not shown) of the upper compartment of portable storage container 600.
[0186] While lid or cover 605 may be openable from the front, back, left or right, the illustrated embodiment allows lid or cover 605 to open from the front. Accordingly, its fastening (e.g., fabric hinge, mechanical hinge, etc. ) may be located along its back edge. In other embodiments, lid or cover 605 may comprise two hinged doors that may be openable from opposite sides of portable storage container 600. In some embodiments, portable storage container 600 may further include a front opening to access upper storage compartment 608. For example, the front opening to access upper storage compartment 608 may correspond to front access 601.
[0187] In some embodiments, lower storage compartment 604 and upper storage compartment 608 may be constructed to fit a predetermined number of items. For example, together both upper and lower compartments may be sized to fit a number of standard 12-ounce cans, such as 36 cans, 30 cans, 24 cans, 18 cans, 12 cans, 8 cans, etc. If a 12-ounce can is 4.8” tall and 2.6” wide, the following exemplary arrangements may be used. The following table shows ranges of widths, depths, and heights, depending on what particular can sizes are contemplated.
[0188] Fig. 6B illustrates an exemplary top-down view of portable storage container 600 with an open top compartment, in accordance with disclosed embodiments. As illustrated, lid or cover 605 may be opened, allowing access to the top compartment of portable storage container 600. In this view, the interior divider or barrier 612 is shown, and specifically the upper surface thereof. The lower surface of interior divider or barrier 612 faces downward into the lower storage compartment. As discussed above, divider or barrier 612 may in some embodiments be thermally conductive or thermally passive. That is, divider or barrier 612 may allow heat to transfer from the top storage compartment to the bottom storage compartment (or vice versa) . In some embodiments, the material used to form divider or barrier 612 may be a thermoplastic polyurethane material. Further, in some embodiments the material may be a plastic material. In further embodiments, the material may be a combination (e.g., sandwich) of thermoplastic polyurethane material and plastic. For example, the sandwich could be formed as plastic on top of thermoplastic polyurethane material on top of plastic. In further embodiments, other materials may be used to form divider or barrier 612, such as thermally conductive aluminum, rubber, hardened foam, or the like. In some embodiments, a location of divider or barrier 612 within portable storage container 600 may be adjustable. For example, the height of divider or barrier 612 may be adjusted such that a user can customize the amount of space within the top storage compartment and the bottom storage compartment. In other embodiments, divider or barrier 612 may include a pocket or a sleeve which may allow a user to fit a taller item within the top storage compartment while still providing a barrier between the top storage compartment and the bottom storage compartment.
[0189] The strength of divider or barrier 612 may be configured appropriate to the needs of the portable storage container 600. For example, divider or barrier 612 may be capable of supporting at least a weight of water equal to the volume of interior 608. In further embodiments, divider or barrier 612 may be configured to support at least the weight of 12-ounce cans of a beverage. For example, if each 12-ounce can weighs 0.75 pounds, divider or barrier 612 may support at least 18 pounds (24 cans) , 27 pounds (36 cans) , or the like. Further, divider or barrier 612 may be strong enough to hold such weights, plus the weight of ice (e.g., a five-pound bag, seven-pound bag, etc. ) .
[0190] In accordance with these embodiments, divider or barrier 612 may offer several advantages. For example, by being liquid-resistant or liquid-proof, divider or barrier 612 may prevent (or impede) liquids from the top compartment of portable storage container 600 from leaking down into the lower storage compartment. As an illustration, this may prevent (or impede) melting ice in the top compartment from leaking down into dry storage in the lower compartment. Additionally, because divider or barrier 612 is thermally conductive or passive, heat transfer between the top and bottom compartments allows a cooling or heating material (e.g., ice, ice pack, heating pad, etc. ) in one compartment to cool or heat the other compartment. This advantageously reduces the need for cooling or heating materials in both the top and lower compartments. This in turn allows for less materials, less weight, and less bulk for portable storage container 600. As a result, portable storage container 600 is more portable, more user-friendly, less bulky, and able to hold more contents.
[0191] In some embodiments, divider or barrier 612 may be a polypropylene material. In other embodiments, divider or barrier 612 may be an acrylonitrile butadiene styrene material, polycarbonate material, polyethylene material, or any other plastic with a UL certificate. The tensile strength of divider or barrier 612 may be about 28.9 MPa (or plus or minus 10%thereof) . The elongation of divider or barrier 612 may be about 200%-700%. The flexural strength of divider or barrier 612 may be about 41.3-55.1 MPa. The coefficient of thermal expansion of divider or barrier 612 may be 4.5 10-5 K-1 (or plus or minus 10%thereof) . The elastic modulus of divider or barrier 612 may be about 1378 MPa (or plus or minus 10%thereof) . The density of divider or barrier 612 may be 0.91 g / cm3 (or plus or minus 10%thereof) . The thickness of divider or barrier 612 may be about 2 mm (or plus or minus 10%thereof) .
[0192] As also illustrated in Fig. 6B, the upper storage compartment may include a perimeter 610 having corners or edges 611. In some embodiments, perimeter 610, corners 611, or both, may be sealed to be water-resistant or waterproof. For example, the sealing may be an adhesive, a welding, or the like. One example material for the sealing is thermoplastic polyurethane. Other example sealing materials may include neoprene rubber, silicone rubber, nitrile rubber, viton, an acrylic, a urethane, a polyurethane, an epoxy, or various others. In addition to being water-resistant or waterproof, sealings such as these may add structural stability to barrier or divider 612. In some embodiments, barrier or divider 612 may be removeable from within portable storage container 600, which may create one interior volume within portable storage container 600.
[0193] For added structural stability, in some embodiments barrier or divider 612 may be reinforced. For example, barrier or divider 612 may be reinforced with an integrated material, such as a webbing, hexagonal or other polygonal shape, lengthwise or widthwise support bars, diagonal support bars, or the like. Such integrated material may take the form of a plastic, a metal, a composite, or another strengthening material.
[0194] In some embodiments, the upper and lower storage compartments may include a liner, such as a waterproof liner. The liner may be hard (e.g., a hard plastic, metal, etc. ) or soft (e.g., a fabric, rubber, plastic, etc. ) .
[0195] Fig. 6C and Fig. 6D depict side views of portable storage container 600. As depicted in Fig. 6C and Fig. 6D, portable storage container 600 may include lower storage compartment 604 and upper storage compartment 608, which may be divided by divider or barrier 612. As disclosed herein, a height of divider or barrier 612 may be adjustable within portable storage container 600 to allow a user to fit objects of various sizes in either lower storage compartment 604 or upper storage compartment 608. In some embodiments, as depicted in Fig. 6C, divider or barrier 612 may be slanted from a higher height to a lower height within portable storage container 600. Such a slanted configuration of divider or barrier 612 may allow taller objects to be placed at the lower portion of the slanted divider or barrier 612 and shorter objects to be placed at the higher portion of the slanted divider or barrier 612. In other embodiments, as depicted in Fig. 6D, divider or barrier 612 may be stepped. In such an embodiment, divider or barrier 612 may include an upper portion and a lower portion. Divider or barrier 612 may be substantially horizontal at the upper portion and the lower portion and may allow taller objects to be placed on the lower portion of divider or barrier 612 and shorter objects to be placed on the upper portion of divider or barrier 612.
[0196] Fig. 7A illustrates an exemplary temperature control pack 700, in accordance with disclosed embodiments. Consistent with above embodiments, temperature control pack 700 may be a cooling or heating pack. That is, temperature control pack 700 may be an ice pack, heating pad, or the like. As shown, temperature control pack 700 may have a casing 701 and may be secured with one or more strap 702. In some embodiments, strap 702 is not used and temperature control pack 700 is integrated into a portable storage container (e.g., into a side wall, an upper lid or cover, a lower base, etc. ) . Fig. 7B illustrates another view of exemplary temperature control pack 700, in accordance with disclosed embodiments. In some embodiments, the size of temperature control pack 700 may correspond to the size of the interior volume of the portable storage container. For example, a larger portable storage container may use a larger sized temperature control pack 700 while a smaller portable storage container may use a smaller sized temperature control pack 700. This may allow the temperature control pack 700 to provide an appropriate amount of temperature control based on the interior volume of the portable storage container.
[0197] Fig. 8A illustrates an exemplary closed top buckle 805 for a portable storage container 800, in accordance with disclosed embodiments. As discussed above, buckle 805 may be used to secure cover or lid 801 of portable storage container 800. Buckle 805 may fasten via cord 804 using fastener 803. As alternatives to buckle 805, cover or lid 801 may be secured to a front (or side) face of portable storage container 800 using techniques such as VelcroTM, buttons, rope or knots, zippers, hook-and-loops, clasps, eyelets, snaps, kiss lock clasps, twist locks, tuck locks, drawstrings, or the like.
