Abstract

Example embodiments relate to apparatuses, methods and computer readable storage medium for distinguishing an on-demand synchronization signal block (OD-SSB) and a synchronization signal block (SSB) adaptation based on a medium access control control element (MAC CE). In a method, a first apparatus receives, from a second apparatus, a first MAC CE activating one of an OD-SSB and a SSB adaptation. The first apparatus determines that the first MAC CE is related to the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation. Then, the first apparatus activates the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation, based on the determining.

Description

DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN OD-SSB OPERATION AND SSB ADAPTATIONFIELD

[0001] Various example embodiments generally relate to the field of telecommunication and in particular, to apparatuses, methods and computer readable storage medium for distinguishing between an on-demand synchronization signal block (OD-SSB) operation and a synchronization signal block (SSB) adaptation based on medium access control control element (MAC CE) .BACKGROUND

[0002] SSBs may be used by user equipment (UE) to synchronize with a network (NW) and perform measurement. In the fifth generation (5G) new radio (NR) networks, the SSBs may be transmitted through beamforming technology, and thus the SSBs may be directed to specific directions or areas to improve signal coverage and transmission efficiency. In some cases, the SSBs may be periodically broadcast. For example, regardless of whether there are UEs that need to receive SSBs, the SSBs may be transmitted at predetermined time intervals. Such periodic broadcasting may waste network resources. An SSB periodicity may be changed with an SSB adaptation mechanism. OD-SSBs may be dynamically transmitted based on UE needs. For example, the OD-SSBs may be transmitted from the network responsive to a request from a UE or based on a NW decision. The SSB adaptation and OD-SSBs may save network power consumption and improve network capacity.SUMMARY

[0039] In the following, for the purpose of illustration, some example embodiments are described with the first apparatus 110 operating as a terminal device and the second apparatus 120 operating as a network device. However, in some example embodiments, operations described with respect to a terminal device may be implemented at a network device or other devices, and operations described with respect to a network device may be implemented at a terminal device or other devices.

[0040] In some example embodiments, if the first apparatus 110 is a terminal device and the second apparatus 120 is a network device, a transmission direction from the second apparatus 120 to the first apparatus 110 is referred to as a DL, while a transmission direction from the first apparatus 110 to the second apparatus 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the second apparatus 120 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) , and the first apparatus 110 is a receiving (RX) device (or a receiver) . In UL, the first apparatus 110 is a TX device, and the second apparatus 120 is an RX device.

[0041] It is to be understood that the number and types of apparatuses are shown in FIG. 1 for the purpose of illustration, without suggesting any limitation. The communication environment 100 may include any suitable numbers and types of devices and apparatuses.

[0042] Periodically broadcast SSBs and OD-SSBs may be applied in the communication environment 100. In some example embodiments, an OD-SSB activation or deactivation state may be configured by a network to the first apparatus 110 in radio resource control (RRC) signaling, as an initial configuration. A MAC CE may be used to activate the configured OD-SSB activation or deactivation state. In an example, the network may send an OD-SSB state indication for a plurality of secondary cells (SCells) simultaneously by a MAC CE. In addition, an SSB adaptation may be applied in the communication environment 100. For example, an SSB periodicity may be changed in a cell. A MAC CE may be used for the SSB adaptation.

[0043] In some example embodiments, a MAC CE for an OD-SSB may have a bitmap to indicate that an OD-SSB is activated or deactivated for each serving cell. In addition, the MAC CE may include an OD-SSB configuration field indicate which periodicity is to be activated. The same MAC CE may be used to indicate both the SSB adaptation and the OD-SSB. For example, the MAC CE used to indicate the OD-SSB may indicate an SSB  periodicity if a plurality of periodicities are configured.

[0044] However, there are different measurement requirements or performance requirements for an OD-SSB operation and an SSB adaptation. There is a need to identify which measurement requirements or performance requirements are activated when the same MAC CE is used for the OD-SSB operation and SSB adaptation. Further, there is a need to identify which measurement requirements or performance requirements are applied when different MAC CEs are used for the OD-SSB operation and SSB adaptation.

[0045] Some example embodiments propose a solution for distinguishing between an OD-SSB operation and an SSB adaptation based on MAC CE. In this solution, the first apparatus 110 receives, from the second apparatus 120, a MAC CE activating one of an OD-SSB operation and a SSB adaptation. Then, the first apparatus 110 determines that the MAC CE is related to the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation. The determination may be based on an explicit or implicit indication from the MAC CE. Based on the determining, the first apparatus 110 activates the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation.

[0046] In this way, the first apparatus 110 may be able to distinguish the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation activated by the same MAC CE. Therefore, the first apparatus 110 may apply an appropriate measurement or performance requirement that corresponds to the activated one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation.

[0047] Some example implementations will be described below with reference to FIG. 2 which illustrates a signaling diagram showing an example communication process 200 between the first apparatus 110 and the second apparatus 120 for distinguishing between an OD-SSB operation and an SSB adaptation based on a MAC CE according to some example embodiments.

[0048] As shown in FIG. 2, in the process 200, the second apparatus 120 transmits (205) , to the first apparatus 110, a MAC CE (referred to as a first MAC CE) activating one of an OD-SSB operation and a SSB adaptation. Correspondingly, the first apparatus 110 receives (210) the first MAC CE. After receiving (210) the first MAC CE, the first apparatus 110 determines (215) that the first MAC CE is related to the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation. Based on the determining (215) , the first apparatus 110 activates (220) the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation. For example, if one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation is activated by the first MAC CE,  the first apparatus 110 may apply measurement or performance requirements corresponding to the activated one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation.

[0049] In some example embodiments, the first MAC CE may indicate that the first MAC CE is related to the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation. For example, the first MAC CE may indicate which one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation is activated.

[0050] The indicating may be implemented in an explicit or implicit way. In some example embodiments, the first MAC CE may include an indication (which may be either an explicit or implicit indication) whether the first MAC CE is related to the OD-SSB operation or the SSB adaptation. Then, based on the indication, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the first MAC CE is related to the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation. As discussed above, there are different measurement requirements or performance requirements corresponding to the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation. Based on the indication, the first apparatus 110 may know which measurement requirements or performance requirements are to be applied.

[0051] In some example embodiments, different MAC CEs may be used to indicate different purposes of an OD-SSB operation and an SSB adaptation. For example, one MAC CE may be used for the OD-SSB operation and another MAC CE may be used for the SSB adaptation. Different MAC CEs may be identified by different logical channel identifiers (LCIDs) and each MAC CE may have its own LCID. Payloads of different MAC CEs may or may not be the same. In this case, the LCID in the MAC CE may be used as an indication whether the MAC CE is related to the OD-SSB operation or the SSB adaptation. For example, a specific type or purpose of the MAC CE may be determined according to a value of the LCID. Accordingly, the first apparatus 110 may distinguish the purpose (e.g., the OD-SSB operation or the SSB adaptation) based on the LCID in the MAC CE.

[0052] In some example embodiments, the MAC CE for a PCell may be the same one as the one for SCell (s) , with one bit in the bitmap indicating the PCell status. In some example embodiments, the MAC CE used for a PCell may be defined separately from the MAC CE for SCell (s) without the need of the bitmap.

[0053] In some example embodiments, the same MAC CE with the same LCID (where their payloads may be different) may be used to indicate the different purposes of the OD- SSB operation and the SSB adaptation. If the same MAC CE is used, an indication (for example, an explicit indication) in a header of the first MAC CE may be used to indicate which requirements (e.g., requirements corresponding to the OD-SSB operation or requirements corresponding to the SSB adaptation) to apply.

[0054] Alternatively, or in addition, if the same MAC CE is used, the MAC CE may include an RRC configuration identifier (denoted as “RRC configuration ID” “RRC config ID”) to indicate whether the MAC CE is related to the OD-SSB operation or the SSB adaptation. For example, an RRC configuration identifier may be signaled in the MAC CE to indicate parameters (e.g., parameters are needed for the OD-SSB operation or the SSB adaptation) applied when the OD-SSB operation or the SSB adaptation is activated. In some example embodiments, some specific RRC configuration ID numbers may be reserved for different purposes. For example, identifier numbers 0 to 7 may be reserved for the OD-SSB operation and identifier numbers 8 to 15 may be reserved for the SSB adaptation.

[0055] It is to be understood that the use of an indication in a header, or an RRC configuration ID to indicate the different purposes of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation may not only be applicable in the same MAC CE, but may in general be applicable in different MAC CEs. For example, if different MAC CEs with different LCIDs are used, each of the MAC CEs may include an indication in a header, or an RRC configuration ID to indicate whether this MAC CE is related to the OD-SSB operation or the SSB adaptation.

[0056] In some example embodiments, the RRC configuration ID included in the first MAC CE may implicitly indicate the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation to be activated. For example, the first MAC CE may include an RRC configuration ID of an associated RRC configuration, and the associated RRC configuration may indicate whether the first MAC CE is related to the OD-SSB operation or the SSB adaptation. In an example, the associated RRC configuration, which is referenced from the first MAC CE with the RRC configuration ID, may have an indication of the different purposes. Accordingly, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the first MAC CE is related to the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation based on the associated RRC configuration.

[0057] The indication in the associated RRC configuration may be implemented in either  an explicit or implicit way. In an example, the associated RRC configuration may include explicit parameters to indicate whether the first MAC CE is related to the OD-SSB operation or the SSB adaptation.

[0058] In another example, the associated RRC configuration may include at least one parameter related to one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation, to implicitly indicate that the first MAC CE is related to the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation. For example, some RRC parameters may be only needed for one purpose. For example, a validity time or counter for a number of OD-SSB transmissions may be only applicable for the OD-SSB operation. In this case, the RRC parameters such as a validity time or counter for a number of OD-SSB transmissions may implicitly indicate that the first MAC CE is related to the OD-SSB operation.

[0059] In some example embodiments, the associated RRC configuration may include a parameter unrelated to the other of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation, to indicate that the first MAC CE is related to the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation. The parameter unrelated to the other of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation may comprise a parameter only related to the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation. In other words, the associated RRC configuration may exclude a parameter related to the other of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation, to indicate that the first MAC CE is related to the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation.

[0060] By way of example, as discussed above, a validity time or a counter for the number of OD-SSB transmissions is only related to the OD-SSB operation. In this case, absence (or exclusion) of the validity time or counter in the associated RRC configuration may indicate that the first MAC CE is related to the SSB adaptation. Alternatively, if the associated RRC configuration only includes parameter (s) related to one purpose (e.g., the SSB adaptation) , it may be indicated that the first MAC CE is used for that purpose.

[0061] In some example embodiments, only one of an OD-SSB operation and an SSB adaptation may be configured or activated for the first apparatus 110. For example, the SSB adaptation may be configured (for example, in RRC signaling) for the first apparatus 110 while no OD-SSB operation is configured for the first apparatus 110.

[0062] In some example embodiments, both the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation may be configured for the first apparatus 110, for example, via the RRS  signaling or other signaling. In an example, the network (or the second apparatus 120) may configure both the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation. In another example, the OD-SSB operation may be configured for the first apparatus 110 when the first apparatus 110 is configured with the SSB adaptation. In this example, the second apparatus 120 may not configure only the OD-SSB operation without configuring the SSB adaptation.

[0063] In the case that both the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation are configured and activated for the first apparatus 110, the first apparatus 110 may follow measurement or performance requirements corresponding to either the OD-SSB operation or the SSB adaptation, or be indicated or specified which one to follow. For example, in some example embodiments, in addition to the first MAC CE activating the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation, the first apparatus 110 may receive, from the second apparatus 120, a second MAC CE activating the other of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation. The first apparatus 110 may determine that the second MAC CE is related to the other of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation, for example, using the approaches as described above.

[0064] In this case, the first apparatus 110 may determine, based on at least one rule, that the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation is to be activated. In an example, one rule may indicate to follow stricter measurement or performance requirements of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation. In this example, depending on whether measurement / performance requirements of the OD-SSB operation or the SSB adaptation are stricter, the first apparatus 110 may activate the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation which has the stricter measurement / performance requirements.

[0065] By way of example, the OD-SSB operation may have stricter measurement or performance requirements regarding beams because OD-SSBs may be transmitted in specific beam directions. In this case, the first apparatus 110 may active the OD-SSB operation instead of the SSB adaptation. In another example, the SSB adaptation may have stricter measurement requirements regarding a measurement period (for example, a shorter measurement period) or stricter performance requirements regarding measurement accuracy (for example, higher measurement accuracy) . In this example, the first apparatus 110 may determine to activate the SSB adaptation instead of the OD-SSB operation.

[0066] It is to be understood that any other rules may be applicable in determining which  of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation is to be activated. The scope of example embodiments will not be limited in this regard.

[0067] As such, although the first MAC CE and the second MAC CE are received by the first apparatus 110, only one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation may be activated or applied for the first apparatus 110 at one point of time, thereby improving processing efficiency and resource utilization of the first apparatus 110.

[0068] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may activate both of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation and follow the one with stricter measurement / performance requirements for measurement.

[0069] FIG. 3 shows a flowchart of an example method 300 implemented at a first apparatus in accordance with some example embodiments. For the purpose of discussion, the method 300 will be described from the perspective of the first apparatus 110 in FIG. 1.

[0070] At block 310, the first apparatus 110 receives, from a second apparatus, a first MAC CE activating one of an OD-SSB operation and an SSB adaptation.

[0071] At block 320, the first apparatus 110 determines that the first MAC CE is related to the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation.

[0072] At block 330, the first apparatus 110 activates the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation, based on the determining.

[0073] In some example embodiments, the first MAC CE may include an indication whether the first MAC CE is related to the OD-SSB operation or the SSB adaptation, and where the determining is based on the indication.

[0074] In some example embodiments, the indication may comprise at least one of: a logical channel identifier, an indication in a header of the MAC CE, or a radio resource control (RRC) configuration identifier.

[0075] In some example embodiments, the first MAC CE may include a radio resource control (RRC) configuration identifier of an associated RRC configuration. The associated RRC configuration may indicate whether the first MAC CE is related to the OD-SSB operation or the SSB adaptation. In these example embodiments, the determining at block 320 may be based on the associated RRC configuration.

[0076] In some example embodiments, the associated RRC configuration may include an indication whether the first MAC CE is related to the OD-SSB operation or the SSB adaptation.

[0077] In some example embodiments, the associated RRC configuration may include at least one parameter related to one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation, to indicate that the first MAC CE is related to the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation.

[0078] In some example embodiments, the associated RRC configuration may include a parameter unrelated to the other of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation, to indicate that the first MAC CE is related to the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation.

[0079] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may apply a requirement corresponding to the activated one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation.

[0080] In some example embodiments, the SSB adaptation may be configured for the first apparatus 110 while no OD-SSB operation is configured for the first apparatus 110.

[0081] In some example embodiments, the first apparatus 110 may further receive, from the second apparatus, a second MAC CE activating the other of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation. Then, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the second MAC CE is related to the other of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation. Based on at least one rule, the first apparatus 110 may determine that the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation is to be applied.

[0082] In some example embodiments, the OD-SSB operation may be configured for the first apparatus 110 when the first apparatus 110 is configured with the SSB adaptation.

[0083] FIG. 4 shows a flowchart of an example method 400 implemented at a second apparatus in accordance with some example embodiments. For the purpose of discussion, the method 400 will be described from the perspective of the second apparatus 120 in FIG. 1.

[0084] At block 410, the second apparatus 120 transmits, to a first apparatus, a first MAC CE activating one of an OD-SSB operation and an SSB adaptation. The first MAC CE indicates that the first MAC CE is related to the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation.

[0085] In some example embodiments, the MAC CE may include an indication whether the first MAC CE is related to the OD-SSB operation or the SSB adaptation.

[0086] In some example embodiments, the indication may comprise at least one of: a logical channel identifier, an indication in a header of the MAC CE, or an RRC configuration identifier.

[0087] In some example embodiments, the first MAC CE may include an RRC configuration identifier of an associated RRC configuration. The associated RRC configuration may indicate whether the first MAC CE is related to the OD-SSB operation or the SSB adaptation.

[0088] In some example embodiments, the associated RRC configuration may include an indication whether the first MAC CE is related to the OD-SSB operation or the SSB adaptation.

[0089] In some example embodiments, the associated RRC configuration may include at least one parameter related to one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation, to indicate that the first MAC CE is related to the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation.

[0090] In some example embodiments, the associated RRC configuration may include a parameter unrelated to the other of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation, to indicate that the first MAC CE is related to the one of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation.

[0091] In some example embodiments, the SSB adaptation may be configured for the first apparatus 110 while no OD-SSB operation is configured for the first apparatus 110.

[0092] In some example embodiments, the second apparatus may further transmit, to the first apparatus, a second MAC CE activating the other of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation. The second MAC CE indicates that the second MAC CE is related to the other of the OD-SSB operation and the SSB adaptation.

[0093] In some example embodiments, the OD-SSB operation may be configured for the first apparatus 110 when the first apparatus 110 is configured with the SSB adaptation.
