AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing techniques for breaking out current from superconducting cables cause dissimilar resistance values and disrupt cryogen flow, leading to increased heat generation and reduced efficiency.

Method used

A junction and termination apparatus with contact blocks and enclosures that maintain similar resistance values and facilitate cryogen flow, using elongated conductive members and cryogen flow paths to manage heat generation.

Benefits of technology

Reduces heat generation and maintains efficient current transmission by ensuring consistent resistance and cryogen flow, improving overall efficiency.

Abstract

According to an embodiment, an apparatus includes a first contact block configured to be coupled to a first superconductive phase of a superconducting cable, the first contact block defining an opening through which at least a portion of the superconducting cable is configured to pass. The apparatus further includes a second contact block configured to be coupled to a second superconductive phase of the superconducting cable that is coaxial with and disposed within the first superconductive phase, the second contact block defining an opening through which at least a portion of the superconducting cable is configured to pass. An enclosure encircles the first contact block and the second contact block and defines a flow path for a cryogen.
