A cannula assembly for the maintenance of an operative pneumoperitoneum in a patient comprising an elongated cannula having a proximal end and a distal end. A removable valve is securely arranged in the proximal end of the cannula to provide a seal and minimize the escape of gas introduced into the patient's pneumoperitoneum when an operative instrument is passed therethrough.

A welding chamber having a laminar-vortex inert gas flow is disclosed. The welding chamber comprises a transparent dome that covers an open top side of a rigid generally rectanguloid enclosure. The dome includes a one-way vent for discharging ambient air from within the chamber while preventing the introduction of ambient air into the chamber. The enclosure includes a bottom and side walls that are joined at smooth, curved edges, and at least one side wall of the enclosure includes portholes with gloves for manually accessing the interior of the chamber while the dome is in a closed position. At least one gas distribution tube, a plurality of gas inlets and laminar-flow tunnels are included. In use, an inert gas is introduced into the distribution tube that substantially encircles the top of the enclosure. The inert gas is directed downward through the laminar flow tunnels, attached to the side walls of the enclosure, where the gas exits each tunnel with a laminar flow and is directed by the radiused bottom corners of the enclosure from a vertical flow to a horizontal flow across the bottom of the enclosure. As such, the inert gas creates a slow-moving counter-clockwise vortex pattern. In this manner, heavier-than-air argon gas fills the enclosure, displacing ambient air within the chamber, which is forced to rise and exit the chamber through a check valve vent in the top of the dome.

A portable storage tank for use with a vacuum truck for the collection and discharge of a waste particulate material which includes a storage tank, waste collection and discharge assemblies and an air pump assembly. The air pump assembly is operable to induce negative and positive pressures within the storage tank. The collection assembly includes a vacuum inlet for fluid flow between the vacuum inlet and the storage tank inlet during air pump operation to induce said negative pressure. The waste discharge assembly includes a discharge conduit for conveying a pressurized fluid flow and entrained collected material from a tank materials outlet to an outlet end while the air pump assembly is operated to induce a positive pressure.

A gas check member, for use in muzzle-loading firearms, frictionally attaches rearward of a sub-caliber bullet to maximize the efficiency of such firearms. The diameter of the gas check preferably exceeds that of the bore slightly to prevent scoring and deformation of the bullet during loading, to hold the projectile in place within the barrel and to prevent moisture from contacting the powder when in place. Upon firing, the gas check minimizes the escape of propellant gases around the projectile and imparts a large, uniformly distributed forward thrust to the bullet to maximize the ballistic qualities of the shot. The outer member may also be adapted, preferably by scoring or other weakening of selected regions of the outer member, to itself fracture into multiple pieces, further optimizing detachment or release of a substantial portion of the gas check from the bullet. A more consistent and complete detachment or release helps prevent interference of the gas check with the trajectory of the bullet upon exit from the barrel.

A spray system for dust control on a shearer machine that operates laterally with respect to a mining floor surface is provided where the spray system is provided with a set of first ranging arm sprays mounted on a first ranging arm and wherein said first ranging arm is located on a first end of a shearer machine chassis. A set of second ranging arm sprays is optionally provided and is mounted on the upper side of the first ranging arm and resides approximate to and in operational relationship to the set of first ranging arm sprays. It is thus possible to cool effectively the motor/generator connected to the displacement type expander and at the same time minimize the escape of heat from the expander, thereby enhancing the efficiency.

The relative positions of the heat sensing section 13 and the infrared ray absorbing section 12 can be changed so as to switch their states from a first state, in which the infrared ray absorbing section 12 and the heat sensing section 13 are in contact with each other, into a second state, in which the infrared ray absorbing section 12 and the heat sensing section 13 are out of contact with each other, and vice versa.

A method of hydrogenation of a silicon photovoltaic junction device is provided, the silicon photovoltaic junction device comprising p-type silicon semiconductor material and n-type silicon semiconductor material forming at least one p-n junction.

The method comprises:

• • i) ensuring that any silicon surface phosphorus diffused layers through which hydrogen must diffuse have peak doping concentrations of 1×10²⁰ atoms/cm³ or less and silicon surface boron diffused layers through which hydrogen must diffuse have peak doping concentrations of 1×10¹⁹ atoms/cm³ or less;
  • ii) Providing one or more hydrogen sources accessible by each surface of the device; and
  • iii) Heating the device, or a local region of the device to at least 40° C. while simultaneously illuminating at least some and/or advantageously all of the device with at least one light source whereby the cumulative power of all the incident photons with sufficient energy to generate electron hole pairs within the silicon (in other words photons with energy levels above the bandgap of silicon of 1.12 eV) is at least 20 mW/cm²

A gas check member for use in muzzle-loading firearms is provided. The invented gas check is designed to conveniently, frictionally attach rearward of a sub-caliber bullet to maximize the efficiency of such firearms. The diameter of the gas check preferably exceeds that of the bore slightly to prevent scoring and deformation of the bullet during loading, to hold the projectile in place within the barrel and to prevent moisture from contacting the powder when in place. Upon firing, the gas check minimizes the escape of propellant gases around the projectile and imparts a large, uniformly distributed forward thrust to the bullet to maximize the ballistic qualities of the shot. A spout assembly and related method of regulating the flow of particulate material. The spout assembly includes a chute, at least first and second plates, and a counterbalance mechanism. The first and second plates are positioned downstream from the chute, the lower ends of the first and second plates defining an opening with an area that is smaller than a cross-sectional area of the chute so that the material may accumulate prior to passing through the opening. The counterbalance mechanism produces a biasing force on the first and second plates toward the centerline to adjust the area of the opening, and permits the first and second plates to move outwardly away from the centerline in response to the weight of the accumulated material. The chamber has an inlet (41) for supplying a solid organic feed material to the chamber and separate outlets (15, 35) for the solid carbon-containing product and the gas product produced in the reaction chamber.
