Description

Process for the preparation of catecholTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of catechol and use of said catechol directly for the preparation of guaiacol, guaethol, vanillin and ethylvanillin.BACKGROUND ART

[0002] Catechol (RN CAS 120-80-9) , guaiacol (RN CAS 90-05-1) and guaethol (RN CAS 94-71-3) , are intermediates to synthesize vanillin and ethylvanillin respectively. There has been a trend in the market to use guaiacol from natural origin to produce natural vanillin for the production of natural ingredients that meet the customers’ growing needs for such products in consideration of naturality and health.

[0003] In prior art, there has been disclosed several routes to synthesize alkoxylphenols like guaiacol (GA) . Such routes are mainly based on the decarboxylation of synthetic / biomass raw material to polyphenols in water or other solvents with or without catalyst. For instance, patent JP2016023136 uses zeolite as a catalyst to decarboxylase hydroxyl benzoic acid for producing hydroxybenzene compounds. J. Braz. Chem. Soc., 2014, Vol. 25, No. 11, 2102-2107 also mentioned the decomposition of phenolic compounds in high temperature water. The phenolic acid compounds showed very minor decomposition at 200 ℃ and complete decomposition was observed at 300-350 ℃., EP3663277 disclosed a process for the preparation of hydroxyl compounds by decarboxylation of a special carboxylic acid compound or a salt of this carboxylic acid compound using phenolic as solvents. Particularly, this document mentioned the raw material was obtained by fermentation from sugar, lignocellulose, furans and / or lignin. J. Am. Chem. Soc. Vol 2005, 127, No 9 disclosed one process to generate renewable catechol by the combination of microbial synthesis ex. glucose and chemical synthesis using water as solvent. However, this process is only performed on a lab scale and is limited for industrialization in view of the dilution of the raw material.

[0004] It is an object of the present invention to provide a process for the preparation of catechol, which can be used at industrial scale, at high concentration and wherein the number of by-products is limited in order to provide for a simple purification process.

[0005] BRIEF DESCRIPTION

[0006] In a first aspect, the present invention relates to a process for the preparation of catechol comprising a step a) wherein protocatechuic acid is decarboxylated under regulated pressure.

[0007] In another aspect, the present invention relates to a process for the preparation of catechol comprising a step a) wherein protocatechuic acid is decarboxylated in a solvent, wherein the concentration of protocatechuic acid in the solvent is comprised between 0.1mol / L and 6.0 mol / L.

[0008] In a further aspect, the present invention relates to a process for the preparation of guaiacol, guaethol, vanillin or ethylvanillin using catechol prepared according to the present invention.

[0009] DETAILLED DESCRIPTION

[0010] For convenience, before further description of the present disclosure, certain terms employed in the specification, and examples are collected here and understood as by a person of skill in the art. The terms used herein have the meanings recognized and known to those of skill in the art, however, for convenience and completeness, particular terms and their meanings are set forth below.

[0011] The articles “a” , “an” and “the” are used to refer to one or to more than one (i.e., to at least one) of the grammatical object of the article.

[0012] The term “and / or” includes the meanings “and” , “or” and also all the other possible combinations of the elements connected to this term.

[0013] Throughout the description, including the claims, the term "comprising one"should be understood as being synonymous with the term "comprising at least one", unless otherwise specified, and "between"should be understood as being inclusive of the limits. It is specified that, in the continuation of the description, unless otherwise indicated, the values at the limits are included in the ranges of values which are given.

[0014] The expression “comprise” should be understood as including equally “consist of” or “consist substantively of” .

[0015] It should be noted that in specifying any numerical range, such as a range of contents or ratios, any particular upper limit can be associated with any particular lower limit; any two particular numerical values can be associated together to form a new numerical range.

[0016] If not specified otherwise, a percentage or ppm content is on weight basis.

[0017] In the present invention, the expression “bio-based carbon” refers to carbon of renewable origin like agricultural, plant, animal, fungi, microorganisms, marine, or forestry materials living in a natural environment in equilibrium with the atmosphere. The bio-based carbon content is typically evaluated by the means of the carbon-14 dating (also referred to as carbon dating or radiocarbon dating) . Furthermore, in the present invention, the “bio-based carbon content” refers to the molar ratio of biobased carbon to the total carbon of the compound or the product. The bio-based carbon content can preferably be measured by a method consisting in measuring decay process of 14C (carbon-14) , in disintegrations per minute per gram carbon (or dpm / gC) , through liquid scintillation counting, preferably according to the Standard Test Method ASTM 25 D6866-16. Said American standard test ASTM D6866 is said to be equivalent to the ISO standard 16620-2. According to said standard ASTM D6866, the testing method may preferably utilize AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectrometry) along with IRMS (Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry) techniques to quantify the bio-based content of a given product.

[0018] In the present invention, the expression “δ13C” refers to the mean isotopic deviation of carbon-13. During photosynthesis, the assimilation of carbonic gas by plants occurs according to 3 principle types of metabolism: metabolism C3, metabolism C4 and metabolism CAM. The three photosynthetic processes from C3, C4 or CAM plants will generate isotopic effects, in particular the 13C isotopic effect, which helps traceability of the botanic origins. Away from industrial activity, atmospheric carbon dioxide displays a mean isotopic deviation of about δ13C = -8‰all over the world. The effect of CO2 integration by the plant leads to a decrease of 13C isotopic ratio in plants. However, the C3 photosynthetic pathway is very discriminative toward 13C, whereas C4 plant discrimination toward 13C is lower. As a consequence, δ13C isotopic deviation of plants will vary depending of the photosynthetic mechanism. Plants with a photosynthetic metabolism of the C3 type, such as rice and wheat, display a mean isotopic deviation δ13C of about -28‰± 6‰. Meanwhile, plants with a C4 photosynthetic mechanism, such as maize, will display a mean isotopic deviation of about δ13C = -14‰± 6‰. These ranges of δ13C are typically measured when the plant itself is analysed, the result of the measure being an average value of the δ13C of the constituents of the plant. Hence, molecules extracted from such plants usually have a δ13C value within the same range than the plants.

[0019] In a first aspect, the present invention relates to a process for the preparation of catechol comprising a step a) wherein protocatechuic acid is decarboxylated under regulated pressure.

[0020] Advantageously the process of the present invention may be easily used at industrial scale. The conversion is high with very limited formation of by-products or contaminants. The catechol can be easily purified by crystallization or precipitation and directly used for the preparation of guaiacol, guaethol, and vanillin or ethylvanillin.

[0021] Step a) refers to a process wherein protocatechuic acid (RN CAS 99-50-3) is decarboxylated in a solvent under high temperature and / or pressure.
