Abstract
Description
TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The present invention relates generally to a modular motor vehicle console, and more particularly to a modular motor vehicle center console comprising a pair of exposed parallel tubular members operably coupled with a floor pan and an instrument panel of a motor vehicle, adapted to interact with a plurality of motor vehicle systems and receive any one of a plurality of accessories to present a plurality of user-defined configurations. BACKGROUND
[0002] Modern vehicle interiors have become increasingly adaptive as designers improve their understanding of ergonomics, posture, and comfort. Motor vehicle interiors have long included consoles, typically located between the driver and front passenger seating positions, with center consoles often provided with enclosed compartments that are openable and closable by the motor vehicle user to store items. Such consoles can include functional features, such as a gear shift lever, as well as convenience features, such as a cup holder. For any given motor vehicle make and model, these consoles also represent an important styling element of the modern motor vehicle interior. As such, existing consoles are typically designed to conform to or support the particular overall motor vehicle interior design of a given motor vehicle make and model, and are manufactured and assembled as substantially pre-configured and fixed structures to complete the overall motor vehicle interior design. However, motor vehicle users are unable to configure such consoles according to their particular needs and tastes. Accordingly, there is a need for a motor vehicle console that allows motor vehicle users to customize the functional and convenience features of the console according to their particular needs and tastes. [0085] As shown with reference to the drawings, the same reference characters can be used to designate the same elements and components or their similar modifications and alternatives throughout this document. For purposes of this description, the terms "upper," "lower," "right," "left," "rear," "front," "vertical," "horizontal," and derivatives thereof shall relate to the disclosure as oriented in Figure 1 the orientation depicted in . However, it is to be understood that the disclosure can assume various alternative orientations, except where expressly specified to the contrary. It is also to be understood that the specific devices and processes illustrated in the attached drawings, and described in the following specification are simply exemplary embodiments of the inventive concepts defined in the appended claims. Hence, specific dimensions and other physical characteristics relating to the embodiments disclosed herein are not to be considered as limiting, unless the claims expressly state otherwise. The drawings are schematic and not drawn to scale.
[0086] Figure 1 With reference to Figure 1 , reference character 10 generally designates a motor vehicle console for a motor vehicle 2 having a vehicle body 4 and a passenger compartment 6. Within the passenger compartment 6, an instrument panel 8 is located forward of the driver and passenger seat locations (not shown), and the motor vehicle console 10 is mounted to the vehicle floor 12 of the motor vehicle 2 substantially along the centerline of the motor vehicle 2 and on the longitudinal axis of the motor vehicle 2. Depending on the functionality and styling requirements of the motor vehicle 2, the vehicle floor 12 can have a raised center portion 14 on which the center console 10 is mounted, as shown in Figure 2A , or a substantially flat vehicle floor 12 can be provided, as shown in
[0087] As is well known, the instrument panel 8 can be equipped with various gauges and controls that can operate the motor vehicle 2, as well as a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system 16 housed within the instrument panel 8. The HVAC system 16 is provided with an outlet duct 18 through which heated and cooled air flow from the HVAC system 16 is distributed to the passenger compartment 6. In addition, a data transmission network or power supply 20 can be installed within the instrument panel 8, with access jacks 22 to the data transmission network or power supply 20 provided on the instrument panel 8. Particularly advantageous access jacks 22 include USB charging ports through which various digital devices such as cellular telephones, tablets, and laptop computers can be connected with the on-board data transmission network and / or power supply 20. As discussed further below, the aperture 24 for the access jack 22 can be cut through the wall of the center console 10 by a laser cutting process, after which the access jack 22 can be sealed from the tubular member 28 by a grommet seal or a simple cap molding 26, as shown in Figure 30C
[0088] As shown in Figure 1 , typically the console 10 can be centrally disposed between the driver and passenger seat positions for access by the driver or passenger. Also, typically the console 10 can be mounted to the floor pan 12 of the motor vehicle 2. However, the console 10 according to the present disclosure provides significant improvements, as more fully described below.
[0089] With reference to the drawings, the console 10 according to the present disclosure includes a pair of exposed parallel tubular members 28, 30 that extend along the longitudinal axis of the motor vehicle 2 and are arranged substantially parallel to each other laterally apart, preferably by a distance of about 300 mm to 400 mm. Each tubular member 28, 30 has a connector section 32, a forward horizontal section 34, an intermediate section 36 extending rearward in at least a partially upward direction, and a rearward horizontal section 38.
[0090] A first forward end 40 of the connector section 32 is preferably operatively coupled with the outlet duct 18 of the instrument panel 8 and extends rearward in at least a downward direction, the outlet duct 18 of the instrument panel 8 being preferably operatively coupled with a lower portion 42 of the instrument panel 8, as shown in Figure 2B As shown in Figure 19 and Figure 31 , a rear end 44 of the connector section 32 is operatively coupled with a forward end 46 of the forward horizontal section 34. The junction of the instrument panel 8 and the connector section 32 is preferably achieved by a reduced diameter portion in the instrument panel outlet duct 18 being received within the first forward end 40 of the connector section 32 and a chrome or anodized cross pin 48 extending through the reduced diameter portion and the first forward end, as shown in Figure 2A and 2B Preferably, the resulting structure distributes the load from the weight of the instrument panel 8 over a large area of the vehicle floor 12 via the tubular members 28 , 30 .
[0091] As shown, each forward horizontal section 34 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 is disposed at a height that is horizontally below the rearward horizontal section 38. Preferably, each forward horizontal section 34 is also operably coupled to a mounting member 50 that is operably coupled to the floor pan 12 of the motor vehicle 2. The rear end 52 of the forward horizontal section 34 is operably coupled to the front end 54 of the middle section 36, and the rear end 56 of the middle section 36 is operably coupled to the front end 58 of the rearward horizontal section 38, as shown. Figure 19 and Figure 31 Preferably, the connector section 32 extends rearwardly and downwardly at an angle of approximately 45 degrees relative to the horizontal plane, and the intermediate section 36 extends rearwardly and upwardly at an angle of approximately 45 degrees relative to the horizontal plane, as shown in FIG. Figure 19 and Figure 31 shown.
[0092] The mount 50 may be operably coupled to the vehicle floor 12 by a fastener, clamp, or other device 60 that provides a secure mechanical attachment, such as Figure 8B As shown, the mounting member 50 extends transversely relative to the longitudinal axis of the motor vehicle 2 and (as shown Figure 8A 6 and 7. The mounting member 50 (best shown in FIG. 5 ) includes a substantially flat and elongated lower base 62 and a pair of semi-annular collars 64 operably coupled to the lower base 62 and proximate opposite ends 66, 68 of the lower base 62. Thus, a pair of openings 70 aligned with the longitudinal axis of the motor vehicle 2 are defined by the mounting member 50, and the forward horizontal section 34 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 can be received and restrained within the pair of openings 70, respectively.
[0093] The lower base 62 and the pair of semi-annular collars 64 are preferably injection molded as a single integral component that is overmolded around the forward horizontal section 34 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30. Figure 37 As shown, the pair of tubular members 28, 30 can be inserted into a mold 72 and the polymer material for the mounting member 50 (preferably a glass fiber filled or carbon fiber filled thermoplastic) is injected into the mounting member cavity 74. The pair of tubular members 28, 30 can then be removed as an assembly with the mounting member 50 completely surrounding the outer periphery 76 of each forward horizontal segment 34 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30, as shown. Figure 8AAdditionally, the outer periphery 76 of the forward horizontal section 34 of the tubular members 28, 30 encircled by the overmolded mount 50 can be provided with a protrusion 78 or the like that wraps around and is captured by the molding material to provide structural stability to the junction of the forward horizontal section 34 and the base 50.
[0094] Alternatively, as shown in FIG. 6, the mount 50 can comprise separate components and can include a lower base 62 having a pair of opposing ends 66, 68 via which the mount 50 can be attached to the vehicle floor 12 by fasteners 60. The mount 50 can also include discrete half-annular collars 64 that are respectively operatively coupled to the lower base 62 and that respectively surround the outer periphery 76 of the forward horizontal section 34 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30. The half-annular collars 64 can be attached to the lower base 62 by fasteners 80, whereby spacers 82 can be sandwiched between the lower base 62 and the half-annular collars 64 to receive and constrain the forward horizontal section 34 of the tubular members 28, 30. In the foregoing configuration, a pair of mounts 50 can be arranged in a side-to-side orientation so as to receive and constrain each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30. Figure 8B In either case, as shown in the figures, it can be preferable to provide a pair of mounts 50, wherein each mount 50 extends laterally opposite one another and longitudinally spaced apart from one another relative to the motor vehicle. It has been found that the use of a pair of mounts 50 tends to minimize rotation of the console 10 relative to the vertical axis of the motor vehicle 2. Additionally, as shown in the figures, the pair of mounts 50 can be arranged in a side-to-side orientation so as to receive and constrain each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30.
[0095] Figure 9 and Figure 10 As shown in the figures, the gear shifter assembly 84 can be mounted to the mounts 50 between the pair of tubular members 28, 30.
[0096] Each tubular member 28, 30 is preferably formed as a continuous hollow metal tube that is bent to form the above-described sections. Thus, the connector section 32, forward horizontal section 34, intermediate section 36, and rearward horizontal section 38 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 form a substantially continuous and unitary interior cavity 86 that extends longitudinally relative to the motor vehicle 2. The preferred material for each tubular member 28, 30 is steel (which is relatively inexpensive, rigid), and can be readily painted in various colors and finishes to match or complement the interior of the passenger compartment 6. When the tubular members 28, 30 are made of steel, they can also be electro-coated to produce a high-quality finish. However, aluminum can also be used as the material for the tubular members 28, 30, although aluminum tends to be more expensive and difficult to form, despite being lighter in weight. Tubular members 28, 30 made of aluminum can also be painted by electro-coating or anodized to produce a high-quality finish. In either case, the tubular members 28, 30 can be formed by a hydro-forming process or a CNC process, as is known. The tubular members 28, 30 can also be constructed from individual sections that are assembled to one another, so long as the above-described continuous hollow configuration is obtained.
[0097] The tubular members 28, 30 are preferably formed to have a circular cross-sectional configuration, and each preferably has an outer diameter of about 40 mm to 60 mm. When the tubular members 28, 30 are made of steel, each tubular member 28, 30 preferably has a wall thickness of about 1.5 mm that extends substantially the entire longitudinal length of each tubular member 28, 30.
[0098] As described with respect to the above-described embodiments, each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 can be independently supported and restrained by the mounts 50. However, it is contemplated that an additional embodiment can be employed whereby each rearward horizontal section 38 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 can be operatively coupled to one another at the distal end 88 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 in order to provide further structural rigidity and opportunities for additional features, as described below. In particular, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the pair of tubular members 28, 30 can be coupled at the distal ends 88 by a cross member 90. Figures 24 to 36 , Figures 38 to 44
[0099] The cross member 90 can be integrally formed with the distal end 88 of each tubular member 28, 30 to effectively form one continuous tube, for example, as shown in Fig. 6. Alternatively, the cross member 90 can be formed as a separate component, for example, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. Preferably, the tubular members 28, 30 and the cross member 90 are sufficiently rigid and strong to allow a person to stand on the cross member 90 to access the roof of the vehicle, such as through a sunroof. Preferably, the tubular members 28, 30 and the cross member 90 are sufficiently rigid and strong to allow a person to stand on the cross member 90 to access the roof of the vehicle, such as through a sunroof. Figure 24 Figure 35 and Figure 36 The cross member 90 can be integrally formed with the distal end 88 of each tubular member 28, 30 to effectively form one continuous tube, for example, as shown in Fig. 6. Preferably, the tubular members 28, 30 and the cross member 90 are sufficiently rigid and strong to allow a person to stand on the cross member 90 to access the roof of the vehicle, such as through a sunroof. Figure 24 Figure 35
[0100] In the event that the cross member 90 is a separate component, each distal end 88 of the rearward horizontal section 38 of the tubular members 28, 30 preferably slidably receives one of a pair of forwardly extending tubular members 92 of the cross member 90, which is preferably U-shaped, as best shown in Figure 35 and Figure 36 . Preferably, the cross member 90 can be moved relative to the distal end 88 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 along the longitudinal axis of the motor vehicle between a fully forward position and a fully rearward position. A release button 94 is preferably provided in combination with a detent mechanism (not shown) to secure the cross member 90 in a plurality of longitudinal positions between and including the fully forward position and the fully rearward position. As a further embodiment, the cross member 90 can be a polymeric component that is injection molded between each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 during the injection molding of the mounting 50, as described above.
[0101] In each case, the cross member 90 preferably forms a portion of the substantially continuous and unitary interior cavity 86 within the console. That is, the connector section 32, the forward horizontal section 34, the intermediate section 36, and the rearward horizontal section 38 of each of the pair of exposed parallel tubular members 28, 30 form the substantially continuous and unitary interior cavity 86 with the cross member 90. Thus, the cross member 90 can be selectively extended rearward to further protrude toward the rear bench seat position. A further feature of the selective position of the cross member 90 is that the natural armrest formed by the rearward horizontal section 38 of the tubular members 28, 30 can effectively be lengthened as the cross member 90 is extended toward the fully rearward position.
[0102] As a particularly advantageous feature of the present disclosure, the cross member 90 can include a rearward facing outer surface 96 and a head impact bezel 98 disposed in and attached to an opening 100 that is laser cut into the rearward facing outer surface 96 of the cross member 90, as best shown in Figure 29 , Figure 30A and Figure 30BThe head impact bezel 98 can include a bezel back plate 102 that is comprised of injection molded polycarbonate (PC), thermoplastic olefin (TPO), polypropylene (PP), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), or polybutylene succinate (PBS). Preferably, the bezel back plate 102 is provided with a plurality of horizontally oriented stress concentrators 104 (or grooves) disposed vertically thereon to control the breaking point of the head impact bezel 98 upon impact. An exposed face 106 of a softer material, such as a resilient polyurethane, preferably forms the rearward facing outer surface 96 of the head impact bezel 98 and the soft material contact point for the console 10. Alternatively, the head impact bezel 98 can be made of thin steel (i.e., 0.5 mm thick) to replace the metal section of the cross member 90 that is covered by the head impact bezel 98.
[0103] As a further embodiment in accordance with the present disclosure, the interior cavity 86 of the console 10 can also serve as a plenum for the HVAC system 16 of the motor vehicle 2. As noted above, each connector section 32 is preferably operably coupled with the outlet duct 18 of the instrument panel 8 at the first forward end 40, and the rear end 44 of the connector section 32 is operably coupled with the forward horizontal section 34 at the forward end 46, as Figure 2A illustrated. Accordingly, the connector section 32, the forward horizontal section 34, the intermediate section 36, and the rearward horizontal section 38 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 form a substantially continuous and unitary interior cavity 86 extending longitudinally with respect to the motor vehicle 2 that is in fluid communication with the HVAC system 16 and serves as a plenum for the HVAC system 16. In addition, the console 10 further includes one or more airflow vents 108 in fluid communication with the interior cavity 86 of the console 10.
[0104] As Figure 9 , Figure 10 , Figure 12 , Figure 14 , Figure 15 , Figures 17 to 19 and Figures 45 to 47 illustrated, the airflow vent 108 can be provided on the distal end 88 of each rearward horizontal section 38, which can also be provided with a plastic or steel cap 110 to form the airflow vent 108. The airflow vent cap 110 can include a collar sized to fit within or around the distal end 88 of each rearward horizontal section 38, depending on the styling dictates of the passenger compartment 6, and is preferably provided with a register deflection mechanism 112, as is known, by which the airflow direction from the airflow vent 108 can be adjusted.
[0105] In an alternative embodiment employing cross members 90, in which each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 is operatively coupled to one another by a cross member 90 at the distal end 88 of each rearward horizontal section 38 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30, an airflow vent 108 can be provided on the cross member 90, for example, as shown in Figure 42 and Figure 44 Alternatively, the airflow vent 108 can be provided on each of a pair of corners 114 formed by the distal end 88 of the rearward horizontal section 38 and the cross member 90, for example, as shown in Figure 24 Preferably, the airflow vent 108 is laser cut into the metal of the tubular members 28, 30 and / or the cross member 90 of the console 10 in any pattern suitable for the interior design of the passenger cabin 6. For example, as shown in Figure 24 and Figure 35 a pattern of parallel horizontal openings of different lengths are employed. Thus, heated or cooled air can be directed from the HVAC system 16 housed in the dashboard 8 and delivered to the rear seat position.
[0106] As an additional feature of the present disclosure, the rearward horizontal sections 38 of the tubular members 28, 30 can be provided with a perforated upper portion 116 defined by a plurality of openings 118 in fluid communication with the interior cavity 86 of the tubular members 28, 30 through which air can flow to the elbows of the driver and / or passenger of the motor vehicle 2 resting on the rearward horizontal sections 38, for example, as shown in Figure 5 , Figure 6 , Figure 7 , Figure 35 and Figure 36 Openings (not shown) can also be provided on the sides of the rearward horizontal sections 38 to direct airflow to the sides of the driver and / or passenger. Furthermore, in the event that the upper portion 116 of the rearward horizontal sections 38 of the tubular members 28, 30 includes an elbow pad 120 provided thereon, as discussed further below, the elbow pad 120 can be cooled or heated by the heat conduction through the tubular members 28, 30 caused by the air flowing through the tubular members 28, 30, thereby providing increased comfort for the driver and / or passenger of the motor vehicle 2. Additionally, the airflow vent 108 can be provided through the elbow pad 120 to provide heated or cooled airflow to the elbows of the driver and / or passenger, as shown in Figure 7 .
[0107] Additionally, it is contemplated that the elbow pad 120 can be mounted to the rearward horizontal section 38 of the tubular members 28, 30 so as to extend only partially around the outer periphery 76 of the rearward horizontal section 38 and can be mounted so as to facilitate axial rotation about the outer periphery 76 of the rearward horizontal section 38. The airflow vent 108 comprising a series of small openings can be disposed in a plurality of radial directions about the outer periphery 76 of the rearward horizontal section 38, whereby axial rotation of the elbow pad 120 about the outer periphery 76 of the rearward horizontal section 38 can be used to open or close the airflow vent 108 or the series of small openings disposed about the outer periphery 76 of the rearward horizontal section 38 so as to selectively control the direction of the heated or cooled airflow from the rearward horizontal section 38 of the tubular members 28, 30.
[0108] In further embodiments, a storage bin 122 can be disposed proximate at least one of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 and the pair of tubular members 28, 30 can include an airflow vent 108 in fluid communication with an interior 124 of the storage bin 122. Even more preferably, the storage bin 122 is disposed laterally between the pair of tubular members 28, 30 and each of the rearward horizontal sections 38 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 further include an airflow vent 108 in fluid communication with the interior 124 of the storage bin 122, as shown in Figure 23A In this embodiment, the airflow vent 108 in fluid communication with the interior 124 of the storage bin 122 preferably further includes a slidable closure 126 mounted within a slot 128 and vertically movable within the slot 128 between an open position, as shown in Figure 23B and a closed position, as shown in Figure 23C Thus, heated or cooled air can be directed from the HVAC system 16 housed in the dashboard 8 and delivered to the interior 124 of the storage bin 122. Indeed, and as a particularly advantageous feature, the HVAC system 16 can be combined with the storage bin 122 to function in part as a refrigerator and cool objects contained therein.
[0109] As yet another embodiment in accordance with the present disclosure, the console 10 can also function as a distribution platform for a data transmission network or power supply 20 of the motor vehicle 2 housed within the dashboard 8. In this embodiment, the connector section 32 is operably coupled with the data transmission network or power supply 20 and the connector section 32, forward horizontal section 34, intermediate section 36 and rearward horizontal section 38 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 form a substantially continuous and unitary internal cavity 86 extending longitudinally with respect to the motor vehicle 2 through which a main data transmission network or power supply line or bus 130 operably coupled with the data transmission network or power supply 20 is disposed, as shown in Figure 31One or more access jacks 22 electrically connected to the main data transmission network or power cord 130 can be provided on the pair of tubular members 28, 30.
[0110] Preferably, a seal 132 is provided between the connector section 32 and the instrument panel outlet duct 18 operatively coupled with the connector section 32 at the first forward end 40 of the connector section 32 to seal the entry of the data transmission line or power cord 130 extending into the interior cavity 86, as Figure 31 and Figure 32 may be seen. Thus, particularly when installed on a utility vehicle that can encounter water operations, the motor vehicle 2 and the console 10 can be submerged to a depth beyond the coupling of the connector section 32 with the instrument panel 8 without allowing water to enter the interior cavity 86 of the console 10. In this regard, each forwardly extending tubular member 92 of the slidable cross member 90 is preferably provided with an O-ring 134 disposed between the forwardly extending tubular member 92 of the cross member 90 and the rearward horizontal section 38 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 so as to prevent water from entering the interior cavity 86 of the console 10, as Figure 36 illustrated.
[0111] As Figure 46A and Figure 47 illustrated, the access jacks 22 can be provided proximate the distal end 88 of each rearward horizontal section 38. In alternative embodiments employing a cross member 90 in which each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 is operatively coupled with each other at the distal end 88 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 by the cross member 90, the access jacks 22 can be provided on the cross member 90, as Figure 29 , Figure 30A and Figure 30C illustrated.
[0112] As further discussed below, accessories 150 can be installed to the pair of tubular members 28, 30 and access jacks 22 to the data transmission network or power 20 can be provided on the accessories 150, for example, as Figure 12 , Figure 14 , Figure 16 , Figure 18 , Figure 20 , Figure 21 , Figure 33 , Figure 34 , Figure 40A , Figure 40B , Figure 46A and Figure 47A particularly advantageous feature of the console 10 of the present disclosure is the ability to employ a modular design to obtain a customizable console 10 tailored to the needs of the driver or passengers of the motor vehicle 2. To this end, one or more accessories 150 may be provided at various locations on the pair of tubular members 28, 30 of the console 10, wherein the accessories 150 may be fixedly or removably mounted to the pair of tubular members 28, 30.
[0113] For example, Figure 5 、 Figure 6 、 Figure 7 、 Figure 12 、 Figure 14 、 Figure 15 、 Figure 18 and Figure 19 As shown, the accessory 150 may include an elbow pad 120 disposed on the upper portion 116 of each rearward horizontal segment 38 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 to form an armrest. Preferably, the elbow pad 120 disposed on the upper portion 116 of each rearward horizontal segment 38 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 comprises an injection-molded polymer (preferably an elastic polyurethane) overmolded onto the rearward horizontal segment 38 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 to form a cost-effective elbow pad 120. As described above, this injection molding process may occur during the injection molding of the mounting member 50. Alternatively, the elbow pad 120 may comprise an overmolded gel-type polymer as a separate molding step. It should also be noted that overmolding may be used in other critical areas to create additional features beyond a simple elbow pad 120, and may provide modular accessory attachment features and soft touch points throughout the entire length of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 and across the width of the cross member 90.
[0114] As shown in the various figures, the accessories 150 may also include a touch screen module 152, a closable box 154, a tray assembly 156, a cup holder assembly 158, a tablet device clamp assembly 160, a sling 162, a storage box 122, and a shallow box 166. As described below, various accessories 150 may also be incorporated into the cross member 90. Preferably, each accessory 150 is manufactured as a polymer injection molded body, having one of a plurality of removable clamps 170 at each corner thereof, except as otherwise described herein. Except as otherwise described herein, the accessories 150 are preferably made of injection molded polycarbonate (PC), thermoplastic olefin (TPO), polypropylene (PP), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), or polybutylene succinate (PBS). Furthermore, it is contemplated that the accessories 150 may be molded in a variety of colors and finishes to match or complement the interior of the passenger compartment 6.
[0115] Additionally, as described above, the pair of tubular members 28, 30 preferably have a substantially circular cross-sectional outer periphery and a substantially continuous diameter along their longitudinal length. Figure 11C and Figure 11D As shown in Figs. 17 and 18, each removable clamp 170 can have a substantially semi-circular recess 172 having an inner periphery 174 and an opening width W that is less than the diameter of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 received therein. Preferably, the opening width W is defined by a pair of resilient and flexible opposing edges 176, thereby allowing one of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 to be properly received within the semi-circular recess 172 of the removable clamp 170. As an alternative embodiment, in the event that the pair of tubular members 28, 30 are made of steel, the removable clamp 170 can be omitted and each accessory 150 can be provided with one or more magnets 168 by which the accessory 150 can be removably connected to the pair of tubular members 28, 30 of the console 10.
[0116] Also, the accessories 150 formed as the touch screen module 152, the closable bin 154, the tray assembly 156, the cup holder assembly 158, the tablet clamp assembly 160, the storage bin 122, or the shallow bin 166 can also be provided with the access jack 22. Thus, to facilitate the interchangeability of the accessories 150 described herein, one or both of the tubular members 28, 30 can have the access jack 22 provided along the length of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30, the lead 178 can enter the access jack 22 from the accessory 150, the access jack 22 can be provided on the accessory 150 itself, and the access jack 22 can be electrically connected with the data transmission network or the power supply 20 of the motor vehicle 2. Preferably, the access jack 22 is provided on at least the connector section 32 and the intermediate section 36 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30. The access jack 22 in turn is in electrical communication with the main data transmission network or power supply 20.
[0117] In one embodiment, several accessories 150 can be removably and interchangeably mounted to either the connector section 32 or the intermediate section 36 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30. For example, the touch screen module 152, the closable bin 154, the cup holder assembly 158, and the tablet clamp assembly 160 can be advantageously interchanged to either the forward or rearward direction, driven by the needs of the motor vehicle driver or passenger.
[0118] The touch screen module 152 preferably includes an interactive electronic device by which information can be displayed and input can be provided to the electronic device. In particular, as shown in Figs. 19 and 20, it is contemplated that the touch screen module 152 can be used to control and display the status of various motor vehicle systems and data transmission networks, control and display of a vehicle entertainment system, and control and display of a vehicle navigation system. Figure 38 and Figure 39 As shown in Figs. 19 and 20, it is contemplated that the touch screen module 152 can be used to control and display the status of various motor vehicle systems and data transmission networks, control and display of a vehicle entertainment system, and control and display of a vehicle navigation system.
[0119] As shown in Figs. 19 and 20, it is contemplated that the touch screen module 152 can be used to control and display the status of various motor vehicle systems and data transmission networks, control and display of a vehicle entertainment system, and control and display of a vehicle navigation system. Figure 5 , Figure 6 、 Figure 12 、 Figures 20 to 22 、 Figure 33 、 Figure 34 、 Figure 38 、 Figure 40A and Figure 40B The illustrated closeable box 154 is generally conceived as including an enclosed body 180 within which is mounted a hinged box 182 having an upper opening 184 leading to an interior 186 of the hinged box 182. The hinged box 182 preferably rotates between an open position exposing the interior 186 of the hinged box 182 and a closed position in which a front guard 188 is flush with a front surface 190 of the body 180, thereby securing items placed within the interior of the box.
[0120] like Figure 4 、 Figure 9 、 Figure 10 、 Figure 14 、 Figure 15 、 Figure 18 、 Figure 19 、 Figure 20 、 Figure 21 、 Figure 22 、 Figure 24 、 Figures 41A to 41B and Figure 42 The illustrated cup holder assembly 158 may include a body 180 having a pair of side-by-side vertically oriented cylindrical recesses 192 disposed on an upper surface 196 thereof. The body 180 may be limited to a Figure 22 and Figure 24 A simple frame, or housing, is shown supporting a cylindrical recess 192 that includes a closeable box 154, a smaller recess 194 for small loose items (such as loose coins), and an access port 22, such as Figure 20 and Figure 21 The cup holder assembly 158 may also be integrated into the cross member 90, as shown. Figure 42 The cylindrical recess 192 is preferably sized to receive a conventional sized beverage container.
[0121] In another embodiment, the attachment 150 may be removably mounted to the forward horizontal section 34 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30. For example, Figure 11B 、 Figure 12 、 Figures 14 to 21 、 Figure 33 、 Figure 34 、 Figure 40A and Figure 40B As shown, the tray assembly 156 can be mounted such that the upper surface 196 of the tray assembly 156 is flush with a horizontal plane. The tray assembly 156 preferably comprises a substantially flat rectangular structure having a shallow recess 198 disposed therein. Figure 40A and Figure 40B As further shown in FIG, the tray assembly 156 can be provided with a cutout 200 on the bottom 202, and the pair of mounting members 50 are received in the cutout 200 so that the tray assembly 156 can be mounted substantially flush with the floor of the motor vehicle. Alternatively, as Figures 13 to 19 As shown, the tray assembly 156 may be provided with a pair of connecting ears 204 extending outwardly along each side, which may be coupled to the opposite ends 66, 68 of the mounting member 50, for example, by fasteners 206 extending through the connecting ears 204 on the tray assembly 156 and into the opposite ends 66, 68 on the mounting member 50.
[0122] like Figures 12 to 21 、 Figure 41A 、 Figure 41B 、 Figure 43 and Figure 44 The illustrated tablet device clamp assembly 160 preferably includes a base 210 to which a support frame 212 can be movably attached, preferably via a ball and socket mount (not shown) to allow the support frame 212 to rotate left to right, move up and down, and rotate 360° relative to the base 210. The support frame 212 is also preferably provided with a plurality of resilient clips 214 arranged around its outer periphery 216, within which a tablet device (not shown) can be received and removably supported by the plurality of resilient clips 214.
[0123] Additionally, a bridge module 220 (which may include a separate closable storage compartment 222 having a closable lid 224, an open bottom 226, a cup holder circular recess 192, and a small rectangular recess 194 for temporarily storing smaller items) may be selectively attached to the pair of tubular members 28, 30 so as to be mounted directly above and in contact with the tray assembly 156, as shown. 11A to 11D Preferably, the interior dimensions of the closable storage compartment 222 of the bridge module 220 correspond to the interior dimensions of the shallow recess 198 on the upper surface 196 of the tray assembly 156 to form a substantially continuous interior cavity 228 .
[0124] In yet other embodiments, a number of accessories 150 can be removably and interchangeably mounted to the rearward horizontal section 38 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30. For example, the sling 162, storage bin 122, and shallow box 166 can be attached to and suspended from the rearward horizontal section 38. Each of the sling 162, storage bin 122, or shallow box 166 can include a C-clip 230 that engages the outer periphery 76 of the rearward horizontal section 38, the C-clip 230 extending along each of a pair of opposing longitudinal sides of the sling 162, storage bin 122, or shallow box 166, for example, as shown in FIG. Figure 2CThe C-clip 230 is preferably shown disposed about the rearward horizontal section 38 of one of the pair of tubular members 28, 30. The elbow pad 120 can be provided to form the exposed upper surface 232 of the C-clip 230.
[0125] In particular, in the case of the sling 162, the C-clip 230 preferably can include a leather exposed upper surface 232 and an inner rigid polymer clip 234 with polyurethane foam disposed therebetween. As Figure 2A , Figure 9 and Figure 10 shown, the sling 162 can be made of a continuous length of leather, cloth, canvas or similar flexible material that extends downwardly from and laterally between the rearward horizontal section 38 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30.
[0126] As Figure 40A and Figure 40B shown, the storage bin 122 can be provided in different lengths, with the longer storage bin 122 preferably being about 150 mm longer than the shorter storage bin in the illustrated embodiment. In the case where the storage bin 122 forms one open compartment, as Figure 40A and Figure 40B shown, the longitudinal sides can be formed of a gel-type polymer to provide support as an elbow pad 120. In addition, as noted above, the storage bin can be provided with a closable lid 250 and heated or cooled. Furthermore, by using the closable lid 250 and a seal 252 about the opening of the interior of the storage bin 122, the storage bin can be made waterproof. Finally, by using the closable lid 250 and a lock 254, the storage bin can be used to protect valuable items, as Figure 34 shown. When used as a device that can protect valuable items, the storage bin 122 and the closable lid 250 are preferably constructed of carbon fiber polymer. As an additional advantageous feature of the storage bin 122, when provided with the closable lid 250, the closable lid 250 can have an upper exposed surface padded to serve as a handrail when in the closed position. Likewise, the upper surface 196 can be filled with a gel-type polymer to provide support as a handrail.
[0127] As Figures 45 to 47 shown, the shallow bin 166 can form a substantially flat body 260 with a shallow longitudinal recess 262 disposed within the body 260. Preferably, the C-clip 230 extends laterally along the length of the shallow bin 166 from either longitudinal side. The shallow bin 166 can also be provided with an elbow pad 120 on the exposed upper surface 264, which, as previously noted, is preferably formed of a resilient polyurethane material or a gel-type material. Figures 45 to 47The shallow bin 166 disclosed in the center is adapted to be mounted to the distal end 88 of the rearward horizontal section 38 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30 without the cross member 90, and preferably also includes a rear air flow vent 108 having a register deflection mechanism 112 for providing heated or cooled air flow to the rear seat position.
[0128] As an additional feature of the present disclosure, the accessory 150 can be incorporated into or manufactured as the cross member 90 that is slidably received within the distal end 88 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30, wherein the accessory 150 can be adapted for longitudinal movement relative to the distal end 88 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30. As Figures 41A to 44 Best shown in the center, for example, the cup holder assembly 158 or the tablet holder assembly 160 can be configured to form or be attachable to the cross member 90 that is slidably received within the distal end 88 of each of the pair of tubular members 28, 30. A pair of parallel tubular members 92 preferably extend forward of the cup holder assembly 158 or the tablet holder assembly 160 and are slidably received within the distal end 88 of the rearward horizontal section 38 of the pair of tubular members 28, 30.
[0129] In the case of the tablet holder assembly 160, the tablet holder assembly 160 can be detached from the cross member 90 before the cross member 90 is fully slid to its forward position, as Figure 41A shown. In the case of embodiments in which the accessory 150 is incorporated into the cross member 90, the cross member 90 is preferably provided with access jacks 22 to a data transmission network or power supply 20. This is particularly true in the case where the accessory 150 includes the tablet holder assembly 160, but is also applicable when the accessory 150 includes the cup holder assembly 158, as Figure 42 and Figure 44 shown.
