Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present application relates to wireless communications, and more particularly to systems, apparatuses, and methods for wireless devices to perform channel state information reporting. Background Art

[0002] The use of wireless communication systems is growing rapidly. In recent years, wireless devices such as smart phones and tablets have become increasingly sophisticated. In addition to supporting phone calls, many mobile devices (i.e., user equipment devices or UEs) now also provide access to the Internet, email, text messaging, and navigation using a global positioning system (GPS), and are capable of operating complex and sophisticated applications that utilize these functions. In addition, there are many different wireless communication technologies and wireless communication standards. Some examples of wireless communication standards include GSM, UMTS (e.g., associated with WCDMA or TD-SCDMA air interfaces), LTE, Advanced LTE (LTE-A), NR, HSPA, 3GPP2 CDMA2000 (e.g., 1xRTT, 1xEV-DO, HRPD, eHRPD), IEEE 802.11 (WLAN or Wi-Fi), BLUETOOTH, and LTE-A. TM wait.

[0003] In order to provide improved communication between a base station (BS) and a wireless user equipment (UE) device, the UE may calculate various metrics indicating the channel quality fed back to the base station. Without loss of generality, these metrics may be collectively referred to as channel state information (CSI). The UE may generate various metrics of the channel based on the received downlink (DL) reference signal, and these metrics may be used to determine the channel state information provided as feedback to the base station, thereby indicating the quality of the channel. These metrics may include estimates of spectral efficiency, number of data layers, precoding matrix, etc. in the scenario of a multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system, etc. The CSI of the channel may also be calculated based on other performance metrics, such as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the channel, the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), the signal-to-noise-plus-distortion ratio (SNDR), etc.

[0004] The base station can use the channel state information to adjust its communication with the UE to provide improved communication with the UE. For example, the channel state information can be used by the BS to determine the code rate and modulation scheme to be assigned to each UE. The code rate and modulation scheme can be selected to not only maximize the throughput to a specific UE, but also improve the overall throughput of the base station communication area (e.g., a cell) through scheduling. The use of channel quality information thus allows the base station to more fully utilize the state of the wireless channel to improve the communication throughput with various UEs.

[0005] Given that base stations use channel state information to improve downlink communications with UEs, generating appropriate CSI is very important. Therefore, improvements in the art are desired. Summary of the invention

[0006] Embodiments of apparatus, systems, and methods for wireless devices to perform channel state information (CSI) reporting are provided herein.

[0007] At least in some cases, the wireless device may be instructed to perform channel state information reporting according to any of a plurality of possible reporting methods. For example, in 3GPP NR, the wireless device may be configured to perform Release 15 Type I channel state information reporting, Release 15 Type II channel state information reporting, or Release 16 Type II channel state information reporting. It may be the case that such different types of channel state information reporting have different characteristics, such that different types of reporting may be more useful than other reporting in different scenarios, and / or that multiple concurrent types of reporting may be useful in certain scenarios.

[0008] According to the techniques described herein, a wireless device may receive CSI reporting configuration information indicating the use of a wideband precoding matrix indicator (PMI) for 3GPP Release 16 Type II CSI reporting. Since the wireless device behavior in such a scenario may not currently be specified according to 3GPP specification documents, various possible techniques for the wireless device to perform CSI reporting based on the CSI reporting configuration information in such a scenario are described herein.

[0009] Also in accordance with the techniques described herein, a wireless device may be configured to perform 3GPP Type I CSI reporting using a unified spatial basis selection framework. Thus, for example, the wireless device may be configured to perform CSI reporting using the same spatial basis selection method when configured to perform 3GPP Type I CSI reporting with a rank indicator (RI) of 3 or 4 and a number of CSI reference signal (CSI-RS) ports equal to or greater than 16 as when configured to perform 3GPP Type ICSI reporting with a RI of 3 or 4 and a number of CSI-RS ports less than 16.

[0010] According to at least some embodiments, such techniques may help ensure consistent wireless device behavior and / or may reduce the complexity of wireless device implementations.

[0011] It should be noted that the techniques described herein may be implemented in and / or used with a number of different types of devices, including but not limited to base stations, access points, cellular telephones, portable media players, tablet computers, wearable devices, and various other computing devices.

[0037] the term

[0038] The following is a glossary of terms that will appear in this disclosure:

[0039] Memory medium - any of various types of non-transitory memory devices or storage devices. The term "memory medium" is intended to include installation media, for example, CD-ROM, floppy disk or tape device; computer system memory or random access memory such as DRAM, DDR RAM, SRAM, EDO RAM, Rambus RAM, etc.; non-volatile memory such as flash memory, magnetic media, for example, hard disk drive or optical storage device; registers or other similar types of memory elements, etc. The memory medium may also include other types of non-transitory memory or their combination. In addition, the memory medium may be located in the first computer system executing the program, or may be located in a different second computer system connected to the first computer system through a network such as the Internet. In the latter example, the second computer system may provide program instructions to the first computer system for execution. The term "memory medium" may include two or more memory media that may reside in different locations in different computer systems connected, for example, through a network. The memory medium may store program instructions (e.g., expressed as a computer program) that can be executed by one or more processors.

[0040] Carrier Medium—storage media as described above, and physical transmission media such as a bus, network, and / or other physical transmission media that transport signals such as electrical, electromagnetic or digital signals.

[0041] Computer system (or computer)—any of various types of computing or processing systems, including a personal computer system (PC), a mainframe computer system, a workstation, a network appliance, an Internet appliance, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a television system, a grid computing system, or other devices or combinations of devices. In general, the term "computer system" may be broadly defined as any device (or combination of devices) that includes at least one processor that executes instructions from a memory medium.

[0042] User Equipment (UE) (or "UE device") - any of various types of computer systems or devices that are mobile or portable and that perform wireless communications. Examples of UE devices include mobile phones or smart phones (e.g., iPhone TM , based on Android TM phones), tablets (e.g., iPad TM 、Samsung Galaxy TM ), portable gaming devices (e.g., Nintendo DS TM , PlayStation Portable TM 、Gameboy Advance TM , iPhone TM ), wearable devices (e.g., smart watches, smart glasses), laptops, PDAs, portable Internet devices, music players, data storage devices or other handheld devices, etc. In general, the term "UE" or "UE device" can be broadly defined to include any electronic device, computing device and / or telecommunication device (or combination of devices) that is convenient for a user to transport and capable of wireless communication.

[0043] Wireless Device—Any of various types of computer systems or devices that perform wireless communications. A wireless device may be portable (or mobile), or may be stationary or fixed at a certain location. A UE is an example of a wireless device.

[0044] Communication device - any of various types of computer systems or devices that perform communication, where the communication may be wired or wireless. A communication device may be portable (or mobile), or may be stationary or fixed at a location. A wireless device is an example of a communication device. A UE is another example of a communication device.

[0045] Base Station (BS)—The term "base station" has the full breadth of its ordinary meaning and includes at least a wireless communication station installed at a fixed location and used to communicate as part of a wireless telephone system or radio system.

[0046] Processing element (or processor) - refers to various elements or combinations of elements that are capable of performing functions in a device (e.g., a user equipment device or a cellular network device). Processing elements may include, for example, processors and associated memory, portions or circuits of individual processor cores, entire processor cores, processor arrays, circuits such as ASICs (application specific integrated circuits), programmable hardware elements such as field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), and any of the above combinations.

[0047] Wi-Fi—The term "Wi-Fi" has the full scope of its usual meaning and includes at least wireless communication networks or RATs that are served by wireless LAN (WLAN) access points and provide connectivity to the Internet through these access points. Most modern Wi-Fi networks (or WLAN networks) are based on the IEEE 802.11 standard and are marketed under the name "Wi-Fi". Wi-Fi (WLAN) networks are distinct from cellular networks.

[0048] Automatic—refers to an action or operation performed by a computer system (e.g., software executed by a computer system) or a device (e.g., a circuit, a programmable hardware element, an ASIC, etc.) without the need for user input to directly specify or perform the action or operation. Thus, the term "automatic" is in contrast to a user manually performing or specifying an action, where the user provides input to directly perform the action. An automatic process may be initiated by input provided by a user, but subsequent actions performed "automatically" are not specified by the user, i.e., are not performed "manually," where the user specifies each action to be performed. For example, a user filling out an electronic form by selecting each field and providing input specifying information (e.g., by typing in information, selecting checkboxes, radio selections, etc.) is manually filling out the form, even though the computer system must update the form in response to the user action. The form may be automatically filled out by a computer system, where the computer system (e.g., software executed on the computer system) analyzes the fields of the form and fills out the form without any user input specifying the answers to the fields. As indicated above, a user may invoke automatic filling out of a form, but not participate in the actual filling out of the form (e.g., the user does not manually specify the answers to the fields but rather they are automatically completed). This specification provides various examples of operations that are automatically performed in response to actions taken by a user.

[0049] Configured to - Various components may be described as being "configured to" perform one or more tasks. In such environments, "configured to" is a broad statement that generally means "having a structure" that performs one or more tasks during operation. Thus, a component can be configured to perform a task even when the component is not currently performing the task (e.g., a set of electrical conductors can be configured to electrically connect a module to another module even when the two modules are not connected). In some environments, "configured to" can be a broad statement that generally means "having a circuit system that performs one or more tasks during operation." Thus, the component can be configured to perform a task even when the component is not currently turned on. Typically, circuits that form the structure corresponding to "configured to" may include hardware circuits.

[0050] For ease of description, various components may be described as performing one or more tasks. Such descriptions should be interpreted as including the phrase "configured to". The description of a component being configured to perform one or more tasks is expressly intended to not invoke the interpretation of the sixth paragraph of Section 112 of Title 35 of the United States Code on that component.

UE 106 may be configured to communicate using any of a plurality of wireless communication protocols. For example, UE 106 may be configured to communicate using two or more of CDMA2000, LTE, LTE-A, 5G NR, WLAN, or GNSS. Other combinations of wireless communication standards are also possible.

[0059] UE 106 may include one or more antennas for communicating using one or more wireless communication protocols according to one or more RAT standards. In some embodiments, UE 106 may share one or more parts of a receive chain and / or a transmit chain between multiple wireless communication standards. The shared radio component may include a single antenna, or may include multiple antennas for performing wireless communication (e.g., for MIMO). Similarly, the radio component may use the aforementioned hardware to implement one or more receive chains and transmit chains.

[0060] In some embodiments, the UE 106 may include a separate transmit chain and / or receive chain (e.g., including separate antennas and other radio components) for each wireless communication protocol with which it is configured to communicate. As another possibility, the UE 106 may include one or more radio components shared between multiple wireless communication protocols, and one or more radio components used uniquely by a single wireless communication protocol. For example, the UE 106 may include a shared radio component for communicating using either LTE or CDMA2000 1xRTT (or LTE or GSM), and a shared radio component for communicating using Wi-Fi and BLUETOOTH.TM Each of the independent radio components for communication. [0071] Channel State Information

[0072] A wireless device such as a user equipment may be configured to measure the quality of a downlink channel and report information related to the quality measurement to a base station. For example, a UE may periodically send channel state information (CSI) to a BS. The base station may then receive and use the channel state information to determine adjustments to various parameters during communications with the wireless device. Specifically, the BS may use the received channel state information to adjust the coding of its downlink transmissions to improve the downlink channel quality.

[0073] In most cellular systems, a base station transmits a pilot signal (or reference signal), such as a channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS), which is used to estimate the channel (or part of the channel) between the base station and the UE. The UE receives the reference signal and calculates channel state information (CSI) based on the reference signal. The UE then reports the channel state information back to the base station. The base station can then generate downlink data based on the received CSI and transmit the downlink data to the UE. In other words, the base station can adjust the way the downlink data is encoded and generated based on the channel state information received from the UE.

[0074] For example, at least according to some embodiments, in the 3GPP NR cellular communication standard, the channel state information fed back from the UE may include one or more of a channel quality indicator (CQI), a precoding matrix indicator (PMI), a rank indicator (RI), a CSI-RS resource indicator (CRI), a SSBRI (SS / PBCH resource block indicator, and a layer indicator (LI).

[0075] Channel quality information may be provided to the base station for link adaptation, for example, to provide guidance on which modulation and coding scheme (MCS) the base station should use when transmitting data. For example, when the downlink channel communication quality between the base station and the UE is determined to be high, the UE may feedback a high CQI value, which may cause the base station to transmit data using a relatively high modulation order and / or a low channel coding rate. For another example, when the downlink channel communication quality between the base station and the UE is determined to be low, the UE may feedback a low CQI value, which may cause the base station to transmit data using a relatively low modulation order and / or a high channel coding rate.

[0076] The PMI feedback may include preferred precoding matrix information and may be provided to the base station to indicate which MIMO precoding scheme the base station should use. In other words, the UE may measure the quality of the downlink MIMO channel between the base station and the UE based on the pilot signal received on the channel, and may recommend which MIMO precoding the desired base station applies through PMI feedback. In some cellular systems, the PMI configuration is represented in matrix form, which provides linear MIMO precoding. The base station and the UE may share a codebook consisting of multiple precoding matrices, wherein each MIMO precoding matrix in the codebook may have a unique index. Therefore, as part of the channel state information fed back by the UE, the PMI may include an index (or possibly multiple indexes) corresponding to the most preferred MIMO precoding matrix (or multiple matrices) in the codebook. This may enable the UE to minimize the amount of feedback information. Therefore, at least according to some embodiments, the PMI may indicate which precoding matrix from the codebook should be used for transmission to the UE.

[0077] For example, when the base station and UE have multiple antennas, the rank indicator information (RI feedback) may indicate the number of transmission layers that the UE determines can be supported by the channel, which can achieve multi-layer transmission through spatial multiplexing. RI and PMI together may allow the base station to know which precoding needs to be applied to which layer, for example, depending on the number of transmission layers.

[0078] In some cellular systems, the PMI codebook is defined based on the number of transmission layers. In other words, for R layer transmission, N N codebooks can be defined. t ×R matrix (for example, where R represents the number of layers, N t denotes the number of transmitter antenna ports, and N denotes the size of the codebook). In such a scenario, the number of transmission layers (R) may correspond to the rank value of the precoding matrix (N t ×R matrix), and thus R in this context may be referred to as a “rank indicator (RI)”.

[0079] Thus, the channel state information may include an assigned rank (e.g., a rank indicator or RI). For example, a MIMO-enabled UE communicating with a BS may include four receiver chains, e.g., may include four antennas. The BS may also include four or more antennas to implement MIMO communication (e.g., 4×4 MIMO). Thus, the UE is able to simultaneously receive up to four (or more) signals (e.g., layers) from the BS. Layer-to-antenna mapping may be applied, e.g., each layer may be mapped to any number of antenna ports (e.g., antennas). Each antenna port may send and / or receive information associated with one or more layers. The rank may include multiple bits and may indicate the number of signals that the BS may send to the UE in an upcoming time period (e.g., during an upcoming transmission time interval or TTI). For example, an indication of rank 4 may indicate that the BS will send 4 signals to the UE. As one possibility, the length of the RI may be two bits (e.g., because two bits are sufficient to distinguish 4 different rank values). Note that other numbers and / or configurations of antennas (e.g., at either or both of the UE or BS) and / or other numbers of data layers are also possible according to various embodiments.

[0081] Figures 5 and 6 is a flow chart illustrating a method for a wireless device (eg, as one possibility, a wireless user equipment (UE) device) to perform channel state information reporting.

[0082] Figures 5 and 6 Various aspects of the method of can be implemented by a wireless device, for example, in conjunction with one or more cellular base stations (such as UE 106 and BS 102 shown and described with respect to various figures herein), or more generally, as desired, in conjunction with any of the computer circuits, systems, devices, elements or components, etc. shown in the above figures. For example, the processor (and / or other hardware) of such a device can be configured to cause the device to perform any combination of the method elements shown and / or other method elements.

[0083] It is noted that although the present invention is described in a manner involving the use of communication techniques and / or features associated with 3GPP and / or NR specification documents, Figures 5 and 6 However, this description is not intended to limit the present disclosure and may be used in any suitable wireless communication system as needed. Figure 5-Figure 6 In various embodiments, some of the method elements shown may be performed simultaneously in an order different from that shown, may be replaced by other method elements, or may be omitted. Additional method elements may also be performed as needed. As shown in the figure, Figures 5 and 6 The method can be operated as follows.

[0084] Figure 5 is a flow chart illustrating a method for a wireless device (or UE) to perform CSI reporting when the wireless device receives configuration information indicating to perform 3GPP Release 16 Type II CSI reporting using wideband PMI according to some embodiments.

[0085] In 502, the wireless device may establish a wireless link with a cellular base station. According to some embodiments, the wireless link may include a cellular link according to LTE. For example, the wireless device may establish a session with a mobility management entity of the cellular network through an eNB that provides radio access to the cellular network. As another possibility, the wireless link may include a cellular link according to 5G NR. For example, the wireless device may establish a session with an AMF entity of the cellular network through a gNB that provides radio access to the cellular network. According to various embodiments, other types of cellular links are also possible, and the cellular network may also or alternatively operate according to another cellular communication technology (e.g., UMTS, CDMA2000, GSM, etc.).

[0086] Establishing a wireless link may include establishing an RRC connection with a serving cellular base station according to at least some embodiments. Establishing a first RRC connection may include configuring various parameters for communication between the wireless device and the cellular base station, establishing environmental information of the wireless device, and / or any of a variety of other possible features, for example, involving establishing an air interface of the wireless device for cellular communication with a cellular network associated with the cellular base station. After establishing the RRC connection, the wireless device may operate in an RRC connected state. In some instances, the RRC connection may also be released (e.g., after a certain period of inactivity relative to data communication), in which case the wireless device may operate in an RRC idle state or an RRC inactive state. In some cases, for example, due to wireless device movement, changes in wireless medium conditions, and / or any other various possible reasons, the wireless device may perform a handover (e.g., when in an RRC connected mode) or a cell reselection (e.g., when in an RRC idle mode or an RRC inactive mode) to a new serving cell.

[0087] At 504, the wireless device may receive channel state information (CSI) reporting configuration information. According at least to some embodiments, the CSI reporting configuration information may include an indication to use a wideband precoding matrix indicator (PMI) format for 3GPP Release 16 type IICSI reporting.

[0088] A 3GPP Release 16 Type II CSI report may be a type of CSI report that may utilize overhead compression, which may be performed, for example, using a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) vector as a frequency basis, and may allow for higher resolution CSI feedback than at least some other types of CSI reports. For example, it may be the case that a 3GPP Release 16 Type II CSI report supports a greater number of layers, spatial bases, and / or subbands than a 3GPP Release 15 CSI report. At least in some cases, a 3GPP Release 16 Type II CSI report may be configured to have a rank of 3 or 4, and a spatial basis of L=6. As one possibility, the following formula may be used for such a 3GPP Release 16 Type II CSI report:

[0089]

[0090] Among them, W1 provides the spatial basis, Provides a compression combination factor, and Provides frequency basis.

[0091] In at least some cases, the introduction of overhead compression may result in such 3GPP Release 16 Type II CSI reporting being more efficient than 3GPP Release 15 Type II CSI reporting for subband CSI reporting. However, for wideband CSI reporting, it may be the case that overhead compression for 3GPP Release 16 Type II CSI reporting will result in higher complexity with minimal or no efficiency gain (e.g., because the overhead introduced by the overhead compression technique may be as much or more than the amount of overhead that can be compressed by the overhead compression technique).

[0092] Nonetheless, for such 3GPP Release 16 Type II CSI reporting, it may be the case that the network may indicate wideband PMI reporting, for example by setting the "pmi-FormatIndicator" parameter equal to "Wideband PMI". In such a scenario, the UE behavior may not be well specified, so it may be beneficial to consider possible ways in which the UE may respond to such a configuration, especially in view of the possible inefficiencies of performing wideband PMI reporting for 3GPP Release 16 Type II CSI.

[0093] Thus, the UE may perform CSI reporting based at least in part on the CSI reporting configuration information at 506. At least in some cases, the UE may use a CSI reporting configuration that is different from 3GPP Release 16 Type II CSI reporting using a wideband PMI format.

[0094] As one such possibility, when the UE is configured with Release 16 Type II CSI reporting, and when wideband PMI is configured together with subband CQI, the UE may ignore the wideband PMI indication and instead perform 3GPP Release 16 Type II CSI reporting using the subband PMI (e.g., based on the subband CQI configuration).

[0095] As another possibility, when concurrent CSI reporting is configured and one of the configured types of CSI reports is a Release 16 Type II CSI report with a wideband PMI, the UE may discard the Release 16 Type II CSI report with a wideband PMI. At least according to some embodiments, the UE may still perform other configured types of CSI reporting. It should be noted that concurrent CSI reporting may be considered to occur based at least in part on an active set of CSI-RS resources; for example, when the UE needs to process multiple active CSI-RS resources belonging to different CSI reports simultaneously, the UE may determine that concurrent CSI reporting is configured. As another possibility, concurrent CSI reporting may be considered to occur based at least in part on CSI carried on a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) during the reporting period. Among various possibilities, the concurrent CSI report may include Type I CSI configured simultaneously with Release 16 Type II CSI, or Release 15 Type II CSI configured simultaneously with Release 16 Type II CSI. Among various other possibilities, such concurrent CSI reporting may be configured when a periodic or semi-persistent CSI reporting schedule coincides with an aperiodic CSI reporting schedule.

[0096] As another possibility, when the UE receives CSI reporting configuration information indicating that Release 16 Type II CSI reporting is to be performed using wideband PMI, the UE may perform an alternative type of CSI reporting. For example, the UE may be configured to perform Type I CSI reporting using wideband PMI. As another example, if the RI is 1 or 2, the UE may be configured to perform Release 15 Type II CSI reporting using wideband PMI. Note that in this example, it is possible that if the RI is 3 or 4, the UE discards the CSI report (e.g., because Release 15 Type II CSI reporting with RI of 3 or 4 may not be supported), or if the RI is 3 or 4, the UE uses Type I CSI reporting with wideband PMI. As another example, the UE may be configured to perform Release 15 Type II CSI reporting using wideband PMI even if the RI is 3 or 4, but use an extension of Release 15 Type II CSI reporting to support such reporting. In this example, extending Release 15 Type II CSI reporting with wideband PMI to RI of 3 or 4 may include selecting L spatial bases in a layer-common manner and, at least as one possibility, the UE independently indicating the strongest coefficient i for each layer. 1,3,l , amplitude i 1,4,l, phase i 2,1,l and the number of non-zero spatial basis / polarizations M l Provide feedback to each of them.

[0097] As yet another possibility, when the UE receives CSI reporting configuration information indicating that Release-16 Type II CSI reporting is performed using wideband PMI, the UE may feedback Release-16 Type II CSI assuming that the number of CQI subbands is equal to 1 (e.g., instead of any configured minimum number of CQI subbands, such as 3). In such a scenario, the number of PMI subbands ("N3") may be equal to R, where R may be a configurable parameter specifying the number of PMI subbands per CQI subband (e.g., configured in RRC to a value of 1 or 2, according to some embodiments). Thus, at least in some embodiments, the number of frequency bases may be 1 (e.g., M v =1, based on 3GPP TS 38.214v.16.0.0: ).

[0098] Note that if the UE reports Release 16 Type II CSI with wideband PMI as a special case where the number of CQI subbands is equal to 1, it is possible that the bit width of one or more CSI fields as defined in 3GPP TS 38.212 v.16.0.0 may be updated to reflect this special case. For example, for Type II-r16 codebook and / or Type II-PortSelection-r16 codebook, for field i 1,6,l (Frequency Domain (FD) indicator for layer l, l=0, 1, 2, 3), the bit width may be defined to be equal to 0, since it may be the case that only the first frequency basis is selected.

[0099] Therefore, at least in some cases, when performing channel state information reporting, Figure 5 The method can help support a consistent framework for wireless device behavior.

[0100] Figure 6 is a flow chart illustrating a method for a wireless device (or UE) to perform CSI reporting using a unified spatial basis selection method according to some embodiments.

[0101] In 602, the wireless device may establish a wireless link with a cellular base station.

[0102] Establishing a wireless link may include establishing an RRC connection with a serving cellular base station according to at least some embodiments.

[0103] At 604, the wireless device may receive channel state information (CSI) reporting configuration information. According at least to some embodiments, the CSI reporting configuration information may include an indication to use 3GPP type ICSI reporting with RI of 3 or 4 and CSI-RS ports equal to or greater than 16.

[0104] According to at least some embodiments, 3GPP Release 15 Type I CSI reporting may currently be configured with multiple parameters, each of which may affect the manner in which CSI reporting is performed. For example, it may be the case that a different design is specified for use for each of ranks 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 5 and 6, 7 and 8. Furthermore, for ranks 3 and 4, it may be the case that a different design is specified for use when the number of CSI-RS ports is less than 16 than when the number of CSI-RS ports is greater than or equal to 16. Specifically, according to 3GPP Release 15, when the number of CSI-RS ports is greater than or equal to 16, a different spatial basis selection method may be used than when 3GPP Release 15 Type I CSI reporting is performed using other parameter sets. However, when different spatial basis sets may be used, this may increase UE implementation complexity, for example with respect to how the spatial basis set is selected.

[0105] For example, according to some embodiments, for <16 ports and RI equal to 3 or 4, 3GPP Release 15 Type I CSI spatial basis selection may be performed as follows:

[0106]

[0107] in is an oversampled 2D DFT beam of length NN2;

[0108] Orthogonal beams within a beam group:

[0109] (k′ 1,0 ,k′ 2,0 )=(k′ 1,2 ,k′ 2,2 )=(0,0);k′ 1,1 = k′ 1,3 ,k′ 2,1 = k′ 2,3 ;

[0110] Calculated and reported as wideband (2 digits);

[0111] For N1>N2>1:(k′ 1,1 ,k′ 2,1 )∈{(O1,0),(0,O2),(O1,O2),(2O1,0)}

[0112] For (N1,N2) = (2,2): (k′ 1,1 ,k′ 2,1 )∈{(O1,0),(0,O2),(O1,O2)}

[0113] For (N1, N2) = (2, 1): (k′ 1,1 ,k′ 2,1)∈{(O1,0)}

[0114] For (N1, N2) = (4, 1): (k′ 1,1 ,k′ 2,1 )∈{(O1,0),(2O1,0),(3O1,0)}

[0115] For (N1,N2) = (6,2): (k′ 1,1 ,k′ 2,1 )∈{(O1,0),(2O1,0),(3O1,0),(4O1,0)};

[0116] in

[0117] And where the calculation and reporting of n can be sub-band (1 bit / sub-band).

[0118] In contrast, according to some embodiments, for ≥ 16 ports and RI equal to 3 or 4, 3GPP Release 15 Type I CSI spatial basis selection may be performed as follows:

[0119]

[0120] in is an oversampled 2D DFT beam of length NN2;

[0121]

[0122]

[0123] where m is calculated and reported as wideband (2 bits);

[0124] And where the calculation and reporting of n can be sub-band (1 bit / sub-band).

[0125] At least according to some embodiments, in order to reduce UE implementation complexity, provide a more consistent CSI reporting framework and / or for any of a variety of other possible reasons, it may be advantageous to unify the spatial basis selection method for Type I CSI reports with RI equal to 3 or 4.

[0126] Therefore, in 606, the UE may perform CSI reporting based on the CSI reporting configuration information using the same spatial basis selection method as when configuring 3GPP type ICSI reporting with an RI of 3 or 4 and CSI-RS ports less than 16.

[0127] As one possibility for such a unified spatial basis, when the number of CSI-RS ports is greater than or equal to 16, the UE may be allowed to report Type I CSI with RI equal to 3 or 4 using the same spatial basis as when the number of CSI-RS ports is less than 16, which is constructed by an oversampled (O1=O2=4) 2D DFT matrix based on a rectangular antenna element structure (e.g., where N1 and N2 represent the number of antenna elements per column and per row of the rectangular antenna element structure, respectively). In such a scenario, the UE may indicate its capabilities, for example, whether it supports such a unified spatial basis selection mechanism for Type I CSI reporting with RI equal to 3 or 4 and the number of CSI-RS ports greater than or equal to 16, and / or whether it supports a different spatial basis selection mechanism (e.g., such as the spatial basis selection mechanism specified for Release-15 Type I CSI reporting with RI equal to 3 or 4 and the number of CSI-RS ports greater than or equal to 16). When RI is equal to 3 or 4 and the number of CSI-RS ports is greater than or equal to 16, for example, based on its indicated capabilities, the network may accordingly configure the UE with which it will use the spatial basis selection method for type ICSI reporting.

[0128] In some cases, when a 3GPP Release 16 UE reports Type I CSI with RI equal to 3 or 4 using a uniform spatial basis, when the number of CSI-RS ports is greater than or equal to 16, the 3GPP Release 15 Type I CSI spatial basis selection method for <16 ports and RI equal to 3 or 4 (e.g., as previously described herein) may be extended to support spatial basis selection for ≥16 ports using one of the following options.

[0129] As a first option, the UE may select the spatial basis independently for each layer, where the spatial basis is the same for different polarizations within the same layer.Within each layer, the second polarization may have a reported phase coefficient.

[0130] As a second option, the UE may select up to 2 independent spatial bases, where one spatial basis is selected for layers 0 and 2, and another set of spatial bases may be selected for layers 1 and 3. Within each set of layers (e.g., which use the same spatial basis), orthogonal cover codes may be used between polarizations, such as:

[0131]

[0132] Where θ is the phase coefficient used to ensure that the final precoder reported by the UE is orthogonal.

[0133] As a third option (e.g., as a more direct extension of the Release-15 design with RI equal to 3 or 4 when the number of CSI-RS ports is <16), the UE may select 1 spatial basis for layers 0 and 2, and may select another spatial basis for layers 1 and 3, within a limited set of specified offsets from the first spatial basis. Similar to the second option, within each group of layers (e.g., which use the same spatial basis), orthogonal cover codes may be used between polarizations, such as:

[0134]

[0135] Where θ is the phase coefficient used to ensure that the final precoder reported by the UE is orthogonal.

[0136] To extend the Release-15 design with RI equal to 3 or 4 when the number of CSI-RS ports is <16, in order to use the same spatial basis when the number of CSI-RS ports is ≥16, it is possible, at least as a possibility, to use k′ 1,1 and k′ 2,1 The following design.

[0137] For (N1, N2) = (4, 2): (k′ 1,1 ,k′ 2,1 )∈{(O1,0),(2O1,0),(0,O2),(2O1,O2)}

[0138] For (N1, N2) = (8, 1): (k′ 1,1 ,k′ 2,1 )∈{(O1,0),(2O1,0),(4O1,0),(6O1,0)}

[0139] For (N1,N2) = (6,2): (k′ 1,1 ,k′ 2,1 )∈{(2O1,0),(4O1,0),(0,O2),(4O1,O2)}

[0140] For (N1, N2) = (4, 3): (k′ 1,1 ,k′ 2,1 )∈{(O1,0),(3O1,0),(0,O2),(3O1,O2)}

[0141] For (N1, N2) = (12, 1): (k′ 1,1 ,k′ 2,1 )∈{(2O1,0),(4O1,0),(6O1,0),(8O1,0)}

[0142] For (N1, N2) = (8, 2): (k′ 1,1 ,k′2,1 )∈{(2O1,0),(4O1,0),(0,O2),(4O1,O2)}

[0143] For (N1, N2) = (4, 4): (k′ 1,1 ,k′ 2,1 )∈{(O1,0),(3O1,0),(0,O2),(3O1,O2)}

[0144] For (N1, N2) = (16, 1): (k′ 1,1 ,k′ 2,1 )∈{(3O1,0),(6O1,0),(9O1,0),(12O1,0)}

[0145] Therefore, at least in some cases, Figure 6 The method may help reduce wireless device implementation complexity with respect to channel state information reporting by providing a unified basis for performing spatial basis selection for 3GPP Type I CSI reports with rank 3 or 4.
