Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to an isotropic concentrate composition that is easily hydrated and converted into an end-use cleaning composition. The end-use cleaning composition obtained from the concentrate composition is suitable for topical application and for washing, especially hands. In particular, the present invention relates to a composition that is preferably sulfate-free in at least one embodiment and is gentle when used. In addition, the end-use composition made from the concentrate is unexpectedly capable of significant foaming, is stable and also has a micellar (isotropic) microstructure. The concentrate contains a fragrance oil and an emulsifier at levels that unexpectedly result in the concentrate composition and the end-use composition being free of any precipitation of ingredients that interfere with the appearance and use of the composition. This end-use composition also provides excellent sensory benefits. Background Art

[0002] Consumers seek personal cleansing compositions that are preferably sulfate-free (i.e., free of sulfate-based surfactants) and are mild and moisturizing while providing excellent sensory benefits, such as pleasant lather and soft, smooth skin, even after a single wash. This is especially true when washing hands, as consumers are encouraged to wash their hands frequently to avoid illness.

[0003] In addition to this, conscious consumers are looking for opportunities to reduce environmental waste, and particularly waste related to plastics, as people are often told that the world's oceans will soon have more plastic than fish. In view of environmental issues and the desire of consumers and conscious companies to do more for the earth, there is a strong desire to reduce the use of plastics when selling products, including consumer products. Therefore, efforts have been made to sell products in concentrated form and to ship products with less water included in them. The difficulty with concentrates is that consumers generally do not like to add additional water to the concentrate and further manipulation, such as stirring, to convert the concentrate into a final usable product. For hydrated products, common complaints include that the product is time-consuming to prepare, is uneven and granular, and can precipitate after adding water and during use.

[0004] There is increasing interest in developing an easy-to-use and easily hydrating concentrate with a refillable package. It is also desirable to provide consumers with a product that is ready to use within five (5) minutes and provides a pleasing organoleptic profile without a grainy feel. The concentrates and end-use compositions of the present invention comprise acyl isethionates. These surfactants are known to be mild surfactants. However, compositions containing high levels of acyl isethionates and other surfactants often exhibit precipitation of ingredients (e.g., crystallization), which often results in an end-use composition that is undesirable for consumer use. Accordingly, the present invention is directed to an isotropic concentrate composition suitable for dilution into an end-use cleaning composition that is also isotropic. The concentrate composition comprises a fragrance oil and an emulsifier at levels that unexpectedly result in an end-use composition that is free of precipitation of ingredients upon dilution, i.e., when formulated using acyl isethionates.

[0008] Other efforts to prepare cleaning compositions have also been disclosed. In US Pat. No. 5,925,603 to D'Angelo, the use of methyl acyl taurates and acyl isethionates is disclosed.

[0009] Further efforts to prepare washing compositions have been described. In WO1992020776A1 and EP0133345A1, liquid hand soap compositions are described. In US6,117,828, hand washing compositions containing wheat protein are described.

[0010] None of the additional information describes the concentrated compositions or end-use compositions claimed herein. Summary of the invention

[0021] In a third aspect, the present invention relates to the use of the end-use composition as a hand washing composition, preferably a hand washing composition dispensed from a refillable package, and more preferably from a refillable package suitable for dispensing a hand washing composition in foam form.

[0022] As used herein, "composition" without qualifiers means the isotropic concentrate compositions and end-use compositions of the present invention. As used herein, hydratable means adding and / or adding and uniformly absorbing water to a composition having water (such as a composition that is initially 25 to 80% by weight of water) (i.e., diluting). No precipitation of ingredients means that there is no visible precipitation or crystal formation in the end-use composition of the present invention (and there is no graininess when the composition is applied to the skin) at least 1-3 days after mixing, preferably 2-3 days after mixing and forming the end-use composition. As used herein, skin means skin including arms (including underarms), face, feet, neck, chest, hands, legs, buttocks and scalp (including hair). An isotropic concentrate composition ("isotropic concentrate") refers to an isotropic composition to which the viscosity does not increase when water is added, so as to produce a lower viscosity end-use composition that is also isotropic and suitable for topical application. An isotropic concentrate is a composition that generally has a viscosity of 30 to 6,500 cps before hydration. The end-use composition is a composition suitable for wiping or washing off, and preferably a composition washed off with water. The end-use composition may be a home care cleaning composition, but is preferably a shampoo, a makeup remover, a facial cleanser, a hand soap, or a personal care liquid body wash. The end-use composition may optionally contain a medicinal or therapeutic agent, but is preferably a cosmetic and non-therapeutic detergent. In one embodiment of the present invention, the end-use composition is a home care composition, such as a desktop or toilet cleaning composition. In another embodiment, the end-use composition is a shampoo composition. In another embodiment, the end-use composition is preferably a personal washing composition, and especially a liquid hand soap that is self-foaming and dispensed from a refillable package. As described below, the end-use composition of the present invention may optionally contain skin benefit ingredients added thereto, such as emollients, vitamins and / or derivatives thereof, resorcinols, retinoic acid precursors, colorants, moisturizers, sunscreens, mixtures thereof, etc. The skin benefit ingredients (or agents) may be water-soluble or oil-soluble. If used, oil-soluble skin benefit agents typically comprise 1.5% by weight of the final use composition, while water-soluble skin benefit agents, when used, typically comprise 10% by weight of the final use composition of the present invention. Isotropic concentrates and final use compositions typically have a pH of 4.5 to 10. Unless otherwise stated, viscosities were measured using a Discovery HR-2 Rheometer using a sandblasted plate with a 100 micron gap and 4-15 s -1The viscosity is measured at a shear rate. The viscosity is measured at 25°C. The reduction in viscosity means that the initial viscosity of the isotropic concentrate of the present invention is higher than the final viscosity after adding water and preparing the resulting end-use composition. The end-use composition is prepared by combining water and the isotropic concentrate and mixing them (with moderate shear, such as stirring, preferably shaking) to produce an end-use composition having a viscosity lower than that of the isotropic concentrate used to prepare it. Typically, the end-use composition (such as a hand washing composition) will have a viscosity of 0.0 to 650 cps. In another embodiment, the isotropic concentrate can be applied directly to, for example, a consumer, and when water and shear are applied (such as, for example, sheared by hand and water from a sink or shower), the desired end-use composition (i.e., hand soap or body wash) can be prepared. As used herein, "substantially free of sulfates" means less than 6.0% by weight of the end-use composition, and "substantially free of oil" means less than 0.3% by weight of the end-use composition, wherein the oil does not refer to or include any perfume oil. The term "comprising" is intended to encompass the terms "consisting essentially of" and "consisting of". For the avoidance of doubt, and for the purpose of illustration, the end-use compositions of the present invention comprising surfactants, water and active substances are intended to include compositions consisting essentially of and consisting of. All ranges defined are intended to include all ranges contained therein. Except in the operating comparative examples, or where otherwise explicitly indicated, all numbers in this specification representing amounts or ratios of materials or conditions and / or physical properties of materials and / or uses should be understood to be modified by the word "about". DETAILED DESCRIPTION

As used herein, polysorbate 20 is defined herein as an emulsifier and is often a preferred emulsifier in the compositions of the present invention.

[0088] Conventional humectants other than glycerol can be used as additives in the present invention to help moisturize the skin when the final use composition is topically applied. These are generally polyol-type materials. Typical polyols other than glycerol include propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, polypropylene glycol (e.g., PPG-9), polyethylene glycol, sorbitol, hydroxypropyl sorbitol, hexylene glycol, 1,3-butylene glycol, isopentyl glycol, 1,2,6-hexanetriol, ethoxylated glycerol, propoxylated glycerol, and mixtures thereof. Most preferred are humectants of at least 75% by weight glycerol, based on the total weight of the humectant in the composition. A mixture of propylene glycol and glycerol is generally preferred, wherein the mixture is 5 to 15%, preferably 6 to 12% by weight of propylene glycol based on the total weight of the polypropylene glycol and glycerol in the humectant. In addition to glycerol, the amount of the humectant used can be in the range of 0.0% to 35% by weight of the total weight of the final use composition. Typically, the additional humectant comprises from 0.0 to 20% by weight, and preferably from 0.001 to 15% by weight (most preferably from 2 to 12% by weight), based on the total weight of the end-use composition.

[0089] With respect to the isotropic concentrates of the present invention, they typically have 5 to 50% by weight humectant, including all ranges subsumed therein. In one embodiment of the present invention, at least 85% by weight, and preferably 90 to 100% by weight of the total humectant used in the isotropic concentrates and end-use compositions is glycerol.

[0090] Fragrances used in the present invention include those recognized in the art as being suitable for topical compositions. Such fragrances may include components such as nerolidol, geraniol, terpinolene, linalool, terpinene, limonene, pinene, camphene, citronellol, citronellal, geraniol, vanillin, terpineol, thymol, eugenol, lavender oil, clary sage oil, orange blossom oil, rosemary oil, ginger oil, lemon oil, thyme oil, terpinyl acetate, mixtures thereof, and the like. Unexpectedly, it has been found that when conventional fragrances are used together with emulsifiers as described in the present invention, the isotropic concentrates and end-use compositions of the present invention do not contain precipitation of ingredients. Typically, the isotropic concentrate will contain 0.7 to 8% by weight of fragrance, including all ranges contained therein.

[0091] The present invention relates to isotropic concentrate compositions which decrease in viscosity upon mixing with water.

[0092] When preparing the isotropic concentrate composition of the present invention, the required ingredients can be mixed with conventional equipment under moderate shear and atmospheric conditions, using a temperature of 35°C to 80°C. Water is added to the isotropic concentrate composition to produce the final use composition. Moderate shearing, such as shaking (or stirring) in a container, will produce the final use composition in less than 5 minutes, preferably in less than 3 minutes, and most preferably in less than 2 minutes. In one embodiment of the present invention, the final use composition is prepared in less than 1 minute, even preferably in less than 30 seconds.

[0093] The packaging of the composition is generally not limited, as long as the isotropic concentrate composition can be hydrated and the end-use composition can be prepared when water is added. In one embodiment of the invention, the isotropic concentrate is sold in a pouch or cartridge associated with and inserted into a bottle or can. The bottle or can is a bottle or can filled with water, and allows the concentrate to be released into the bottle or can to mix with water. Typically, the bottle or can has a lid with a pump that opens the pouch or can to release the concentrate into the water to prepare the end-use composition. This concentrate unexpectedly produces an end-use composition, such as a hand sanitizer, that has the desired properties that consumers appreciate and has no precipitation or granularity. This packaging allows unlimited refilling to always reduce plastic waste in the environment. The packaging can also be equipped with a mesh accessory in its outlet hole to release the end-use composition in the form of a foam. Conventional pumps with a mesh having a hole of 35 to 140 microns before leaving the pump are commercially available from suppliers such as Albea and Rieke.

[0094] The examples are provided to facilitate the understanding of the present invention. They are not intended to limit the scope of the claims.

[0095] Embodiment 1

[0096] The compositions shown in this example listed in the table were prepared by conventional methods and thus by mixing the ingredients with moderate shear at atmospheric conditions at a temperature of about 35 to 75° C. The resulting isotropic concentrate had a pH of about 6.9 and a viscosity of about 100 cps.

[0097] surface

[0098]

[0099]

[0100] The isotropic concentrate composition was hydrated / diluted with 3 parts of water per 1 part of concentrate. The resulting end-use composition, prepared in 1 minute with stirring, was a foamable hand washing composition suitable for refillable packaging. The viscosity of the hand washing composition was about 50 cps. Surprisingly, after 48 to 72 hours at room temperature (25° C.), neither the concentrate nor the hand washing composition showed any visible or physical signs of precipitation or crystallization. In addition, the hand washing composition of the present invention was added to a conventional foam pump dispenser. The pump dispenser discharged about 100 microliters of the hand washing composition per pump through a screen of about 100 microns without signs of clogging with precipitation, thereby producing a foam hand washing composition.

[0101] Example II

[0102] In this example, an isotropic concentrate composition similar to the concentrate prepared in Example 1 was prepared, except that the fragrance and emulsifier were not included, and the balance was water. The end-use composition was also prepared by diluting the concentrate in the manner described in Example 1. The resulting concentrate and end-use composition prepared in this example showed precipitation / crystallization in less than 24 hours at room temperature (25° C.). Both are unacceptable for consumer use.
