Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present invention relates to oral care compositions, particularly oral care compositions which do not contain preservatives. Background Art
[0002] A key attribute of oral care products is their freedom from microbial and fungal contamination. Therefore, there is a need for oral care products that provide consistent and reproducible resistance to bacterial growth and mold while maintaining their efficacy and consumer acceptability. Oral care products with high water content and silica abrasives can be difficult to preserve, especially in the absence of preservatives.
[0003] WO 2013 / 095370 provides an oral care composition comprising: greater than 50% by weight water; an effective amount of benzyl alcohol; and a silica abrasive which is said to provide adequate preservation.
[0004] WO 2018 / 145988 discloses oral care compositions comprising low levels of sodium fluoride.
[0005] WO 2014 / 100930 discloses the use of a water-soluble stannous ion source for improving the robustness of oral care compositions to microbial challenge.
[0006] From a cost and sustainability standpoint, there is a need for toothpastes containing higher levels of water. With today's consumer preference for products that minimize the use of preservatives and reduce fluoride levels, self-preserving products are desirable. Summary of the invention

[0020] The compositions of the present invention are preferably used to clean the surfaces of the oral cavity and are referred to as oral care compositions.
[0021] Toothpastes are in the form of an extrudable semi-solid such as a cream, paste or gel (or mixtures thereof).Preferred product forms of the compositions of the present invention are therefore those suitable for brushing and / or rinsing oral surfaces.
[0022] The toothpaste comprises a silica-based abrasive. It can be used as the sole abrasive silica, or in combination with low levels of other abrasive silicas, such as those according to EP 236070. The low refractive index silica used as abrasive in the present invention is preferably a silica having an apparent refractive index (Rl) in the range of 1.41-1.47, preferably in the range of 1.435-1.445, preferably having a weight average particle size between 5 mm and 15 mm, with a particle size of 10 mm. 2 / g and 100m 2 / g, and a BET (nitrogen) surface area of about 70-150 cm 3 The oil absorption of 1 / 100 g is preferably 0.1 g, but abrasive silicas with a lower apparent refractive index may also be used. Typical examples of suitable low refractive index abrasive silicas (e.g., with an Rl between 1.435 and 1.445) are Tixosil 63 and 73 available from Rhone Poulenc; Sident 10 available from Degussa; Zeodent 113 available from Zeofinn; Zeodent 124 available from Evonik, Sorbosil AC 77 available from PQ Corporation (with an Rl of about 1.440). The amount of these silicas in the composition is generally in the range of 5-60 wt%, usually 5-20 wt%.
[0023] The composition according to the invention comprises 0.4 wt% zinc sulphate of the total composition, preferably the zinc sulphate content is 0.5 to 3 wt%, more preferably 0.6 to 1.5 wt% of the total composition. It is preferred if the zinc sulphate is zinc sulphate heptahydrate.

If present, other metal salts include zinc chloride, zinc fluoride, zinc citrate, zinc lactate, zinc oxide, zinc monoglyceride, zinc tartrate, zinc pyrophosphate and zinc maleate. Stannous ions, such as stannous fluoride and stannous chloride, may also be suitable for use in the present invention.

These proportions of thickener in the dentifrice composition of the present invention allow the formation of an extrudable shape-retaining product that can be extruded from a tube onto a toothbrush without falling between the bristles of the toothbrush, but rather substantially retains its shape on the bristles. Suitable thickeners or gelling agents that can be used in the practice of the present invention include inorganic thickening silicas, such as amorphous silica available from Huber Corporation under the trade name Zeodent 165, Irish moss, iota-carrageenan, tragacanth gum, and polyvinylpyrrolidone.

This is in contrast to a soluble dye. In the context of the present invention, the "relevant medium" is human saliva, i.e. the liquid medium in which the composition is used at the temperature of the mouth during brushing, i.e. at most 37°C. As a reasonable approximation, the relevant medium can be considered to be water, and the relevant temperature is 25°C.
