In one embodiment, the passage 72 is a groove or depression in the outer surface 76 that provides an area for collecting cooling fluid as the piston 50 moves between the bottom dead center position and the top dead center position in the combustion chamber. In one embodiment, the passage 72 extends only along the skirt 70. In one embodiment, the passage 72 extends along the skirt 70 and along a portion of the head 60.

[0023] In one embodiment, the channel 72 extends from a first channel end 78 on or near the head 60 to an opposing second channel end 80 adjacent the second end 58. In one embodiment, the passage 74 intersects the channel 72 at the first channel end 78. [0024] In an embodiment of the piston 50, Figure 4 5 ', the piston 50' is configured to include a skirt extension 90 that projects outwardly from the second end 58 and is aligned with the passage 72. The skirt extension 90 can provide additional length to the piston 60' to extend the passage 72 along the additional length, and / or maintain coverage of the outlet 18 of the flow path 14 to reduce oil spraying into the cylinder bore. The skirt extension 90 can be a protrusion, finger, or projection that does not extend completely around the skirt 70, but is wide enough transverse to the longitudinal axis 54 to cover the outlet 18 of the flow path 14.

[0025] refer to Figures 5 and 6, an internal combustion engine 10 having a cylinder 20 is shown. The cylinder 20 includes a cylinder block portion 12 of the internal combustion engine 10, and a cylinder bore 22 formed in the cylinder block portion 12. Cooling fluid from flow path 14 may be delivered under pressure through opening 18 via outlet 16. Cooling fluid collected in channel 72 is provided to cooling slot 62 via passage 74.

[0028] As the piston 50 moves toward Figure 6 As long as the passage 72 remains in fluid contact with the opening 18, the cooling fluid will continue to collect in the passage 72 for delivery to the cooling channel 62. Depending on the piston height, stroke length and the position of the opening 18, the opening 18 may be temporarily uncovered, such as Figure 6 When the opening 18 is uncovered, the cooling fluid may be discharged from the opening 18 directly into the cylinder bore 22 to be recirculated back to the lubrication system without first passing through the cooling channel 62 .

[0029] exist Figures 5 and 6 In the embodiment of the invention, the outlet 16 extends orthogonally to the cylinder bore wall 28, providing the shortest travel path from the flow path 14 to the opening 18. Non-orthogonal orientations are also contemplated for the outlet 16, such as Figures 7 and 8 For example, the outlet 16' may be oriented obliquely to the cylinder bore wall 28 and extend from the flow path 14 in a direction toward the cylinder head 26. In this orientation, when the piston 50 is in the bottom dead center position, the outlet 16' may be in line with the passage 74, as shown in FIG. Figure 7 shown.

[0030] As the piston 50 moves toward top dead center, the cooling fluid may be continuously supplied as long as the opening 18 is along the passage 72 between the first passage end 78 and the second passage end 80. Figure 8If it is desired to reduce cooling fluid that may be discharged directly into the cylinder bore 22, a skirt extension may be added to the piston 50, as described above with respect to the piston 50'.
