[0022] Generally, the present invention relates to a multi-purpose workbench that can be transformed between a workbench configuration and a collapsed (e.g., storage) configuration. In the collapsed configuration, the multi-purpose workbench can form a transport trolley with a platform, wheels, and handles. The present invention further relates to a storage support interface that can be coupled to a workbench or other surface. The storage support interface includes one or more mounting members that are configured to receive complementary Y-shaped brackets. The inventors have found that the multi-purpose workbench and storage support interface of the present invention can provide users with enhanced accessibility, mobility, and easy storage.

[0023] Now referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 A multi-purpose workbench 10 is shown. The multi-purpose workbench 10 has a planar work surface 12 supported by a leg assembly 14. Figure 1 The workbench 10 is shown in an extended position in which the leg assembly 14 is extended to support the work surface 12 as a workbench for a user, for example, as a miter saw compatible work surface. In some aspects of the invention, the multi-purpose workbench 10 may include one or more storage support interfaces 18 configured to receive complementary brackets for storing items coupled to the work surface 12, such as tools or accessories. Figure 2 The multi-purpose workbench 10 is shown in a collapsed position in which the leg assemblies 14 are folded into the collapsed position, such as to minimize the size of the multi-purpose workbench 10 for storage. Figure 2 As shown, the multi-purpose work platform 10 may include a platform 16 coupled to the leg assembly 14 so that the multi-purpose work platform 10 is converted into a transport dolly ( Figure 2 shown and described in further detail below).

[0024] Still reference Figure 1, the work surface 12 may include an upper surface 20 and a lower surface 22. The upper surface 20 may be a planar surface that forms a planar work area for a user. In some aspects, the lower surface 22 may be a planar surface, and the lower surface 22 may be substantially parallel to the upper surface 20. The work surface 12 may have one or more side surfaces 24 that extend around the perimeter of the work surface 12 between the upper surface 20 and the lower surface 22. For example, when the work surface 12 has a Figure 1 to Figure 2 When the generally rectangular perimeter shape is shown, the side surface 24 can extend along a first side 26, a second side 28, a third side 30, and a fourth side 32, whereby the first side 26 and the second side 28 are generally parallel to each other, and the third side 30 and the fourth side 32 are generally parallel to each other. When describing the relative positioning of the leg assembly 14 with respect to the work surface 12, the first side 26 and the second side 28 can alternatively be described as a "first end" and a "second end" of the work surface 12.

[0025] As in Figure 4 As best seen in FIG. 1 , the work surface 12 may have one or more receiving seats 34 configured to receive fasteners (not shown). For example, a plurality of receiving seats 34 may be present on the lower surface 22 of the work surface 12. Figure 4 As shown, in one arrangement, the receptacle 34 can be spaced inwardly from and parallel to the sides 26, 28, 30, 32. The receptacle 34 can enable a user to couple one or more accessories to the work surface 12, such as by inserting a fastener into the receptacle. For example, one or more tools or storage accessories can be coupled to the work surface 12 by utilizing the receptacle 34 (such as a saw tool, such as a miter saw or other saw) and / or storage accessories (such as a storage bin, storage hook, etc.).

[0026] For example, the storage support interface 18 can be coupled to the work surface 12. The storage support interface 18 can provide storage for tools and / or accessories coupled to the work surface 12, thereby enhancing accessibility to the user. For example, the storage support interface 18 can be coupled to the work surface 12 by fastening the storage support interface 18 to the above-mentioned receiving seat 34 with one or more fasteners (not shown). In some aspects of the present invention, the storage support interface 18 can be repositioned relative to the work surface 12. In other words, the user can select a convenient or desired position of the storage support interface 18 relative to the work surface 12, for example, along any of the sides 26, 28, 30, 32.

[0027] The storage support interface 18 can have a body 40 having a coupling portion 42 and a storage portion 44. The coupling portion 42 can extend along an upper side of the storage support interface 18 and can extend, for example, in a horizontal plane. One or more openings 46 extend through the coupling portion 42 and are each configured to receive a fastener therein. To couple the storage support interface 18 to a support structure (e.g., a work surface 12), the planar coupling portion 42 can be coupled to the support structure (e.g., a work surface 12). Figure 4 22) and fasteners may be inserted through openings 46 to secure to the support structure. Figure 4 The storage support interface 18 is shown coupled to the work surface 12 , but the present invention contemplates coupling the storage support interface 18 to any desired support structure, particularly any horizontal planar support structure that is compatible with the coupling portion 42 .

[0028] The storage portion 44 of the storage support interface 18 may include one or more mounting members 50 configured to receive a complementary bracket (not shown). For example, each mounting member 50 may include a first angled support member 52 and a second angled support member 54 that are angled toward each other in a downwardly extending direction. Each of the first angled support member 52 and the second angled support member 54 may have a protruding portion 56 that protrudes outward from a planar face 60 (also referred to as a planar surface) of the mounting member 50. Opposite to the planar face 60, the first angled support member 52 and the second angled support member 54 may each have a retaining portion 58. For example, the retaining portion 58 may be bent or folded inwardly toward the planar face 60. In addition, the corresponding retaining portions 58 of the first angled support member 52 and the second angled support member 54 may be bent or folded toward each other so as to form a receiving space 62 therein. In addition, an opening 64 may be formed between the first angled support member 52 and the second angled support member 54 at the lower side of each mounting member 50. The opening 64 may communicate with or extend from the receiving space 62 such that a bracket may be supported in the receiving space 62 and may extend through the opening 64 .

[0029] The storage portion 44 may further include one or more hooks 66. For example, one or more hooks 66 may be provided between each mounting member 50. Figure 5As shown, the storage portion 44 can include a bottom section 68 extending below the mounts 50, and one or more lower hooks 66a can extend from the bottom section 68. Similarly, the storage portion 44 can include a top section 70 extending above the mounts 50 (e.g., connecting the mounts 50 together), and one or more upper hooks 66b can extend from the top section 70. For example, the bottom section 68 and the top section 70 can be coplanar with the planar face 60 of the mounts 50. In some aspects of the invention, there can be a lower hook 66a and an upper hook 66b between each mount 50.

[0030] The storage portion 44 may further include one or more fastener openings 72 similar to the fastener openings 46 of the coupling portion 42. In this manner, the storage support interface 18 may be coupled to a support structure in a variety of orientations or in a variety of planes.

[0031] like Figure 5 As shown, in some aspects of the present invention, the storage support interface 18 can be integrally formed from a piece of material. For example, the storage support interface can be integrally formed from a single piece of metal (e.g., bent or stamped metal) to form the structure of the storage support interface 18. In this regard, the connecting portion 42 and the storage section 44 can be formed from a single piece of material and optionally bent along the axis 74. Optionally, the plane of the storage section 44 and the connecting portion 42 can be substantially perpendicular to each other, such as to be assembled along the edge of the work surface 12. In addition, in some aspects, the storage portion 44 may include one or more negative spaces 76, wherein the material of the storage support interface 18 is bent out of the plane of the planar space 60, the top section 70, and the bottom section 68, such as to form one of the angled supports 52, 52 or hooks 66.

[0032] FIG. 6A to FIG. 6B Another storage support interface 18 of the present invention is shown. One or more storage accessory rails 150 can be coupled to the work surface 12. For example, two storage accessory rails 150 can be coupled to the work surface 12, such as along the side edges 26 or 28 of the work surface 12. In some aspects, a mounting bracket 170 can be provided to couple the storage accessory rails 150 to the work surface 12. The base section 172 of the mounting bracket 170 can extend coplanar with the bottom surface 22 of the work surface 12 and be coupled thereto, such as by fasteners. A track coupling surface 174 can extend generally downward from the base section 172 and can be provided with a fastener opening 176 to receive a fastener therethrough to couple the storage accessory rails 150. In some aspects, the track coupling surface 174 can extend generally coplanar with the side surface 26 or 26 from which the storage accessory rails 150 extend.

[0033] The storage accessory rail 150 may include a generally planar portion 152, a central protrusion 154 that protrudes outwardly relative to the planar portion 152, a first side protrusion 156 disposed at a first side of the rail 150, and a second side protrusion 158 at a second side of the rail 150. Each of the protrusions may alternatively be referred to as a "wedge". A slot 162 may be formed through the planar portion 152 along one or more edges of each wedge, for example to permit engagement of a complementary bracket (not shown). Further, each wedge may include an overhang 160 along one or more edges thereof (e.g., along the slot 162) to form a receiving space between the generally planar portion 152 and the overhang 160 to retain a bracket therein. A mounting member may be formed between two adjacent protrusions (e.g., the central protrusion 154 and the first side protrusion 156), wherein a bracket receiving space 164 is formed therebetween along the generally planar portion 152. One or more fastener openings 168 may be formed through the generally planar portion 152 to receive fasteners for fastening the track 150 to the mounting bracket 170 .

[0034] In some aspects of the present invention, as shown, each of the first side protrusion 156 and the second side protrusion 158 can be formed as substantially half of the central protrusion 154. In this regard, when multiple storage accessory rails 150 are installed adjacent to each other, a complete wedge can be formed by the first side protrusions 156 and the second side protrusions 158 of the adjacent rails 150, such as Fig. 6A Each of the wedges can have one or more angled sides that extend at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the track 150 and the vertical axis of the track 150. In some aspects, each of the wedges can further include a vertical side or edge disposed below the angled surface, for example, so that the bracket receiving space 164 forms a generally Y-shape.

[0035] The leg assembly 14 will now be described in further detail. The leg assembly 14 may include a first leg 80 and a second leg 94. Each of the legs of the leg assembly may be formed of any suitable material and shape, such as a plastic or metal hollow or solid rod. For example, the legs may be formed of a hollow metal tube. In some aspects of the invention, there may be a single first leg 80 and a single second leg 94 (not shown). In other embodiments, there may be a pair of first legs 80 and a pair of second legs 94. For example, the pair of first legs 80 may be substantially parallel, and the pair of second legs 94 may be substantially parallel to each other.

[0036] The first leg 80 may include an elongated section 82, a coupling section 84 extending at an angle relative to the elongated section 82 at an upper end thereof, and a foot section 86 extending at an angle relative to the elongated section 82 at a lower end thereof. The coupling section 84 may be coupled with a connector 88. The connector 88 may be configured to couple with a base 90 on which the work surface 12 is supported and / or on which it is coupled to the leg assembly 14. The foot 92 may be coupled to the foot section 86 and configured to support the first leg 80 on the ground or floor or other surface.

[0037] The second leg 94 may include a first elongated section 96 and a second elongated section 98. The first elongated section 96 may be coupled to the work surface 12 at an upper end of the first elongated section 96. For example, a pivotable coupling 100 may be provided to pivotally couple the upper end of the first elongated section 96 to the lower surface 22 of the work surface 12. The second elongated section 98 may be coupled to the first elongated section 96 at an upper end and to a foot section 102 at a lower end. For example, a pivotable coupling 104 may be provided between the second elongated section 98 and the first elongated section 96 to enable the second elongated section 98 to pivot relative to the first elongated section 96, for example, to fold the workbench into a collapsed position. The second elongated section 96 may further include a pivotable coupling 106 to couple the second elongated section 96 to the elongated section 82 of the first leg 80.

[0038] The second leg 94 can extend in a lateral (e.g., opposite) direction relative to the first leg 80 and the work surface 12, such that the elongated sections 82 of the first leg 80 and the second leg 94 can form an X-shape or lateral arrangement relative to each other in the extended position (see Figure 1 and Figure 4 When the workbench 10 is transformed into the collapsed position by pivoting the first leg 80 and the second leg 94 (see Figure 2 and Figure 7 ), the first elongated sections 96 of the first leg 80 and the second leg 94 can extend generally parallel to each other and to the lower surface 22 of the work surface 12. The second elongated section 98 can extend generally parallel to the first elongated section 96. The foot section 86 and the foot section 102 can be disposed generally adjacent to each other in the collapsed position of the multi-purpose workbench 10 (see Figure 2 ).

[0039] The leg assembly 14 can be provided with a locking mechanism that includes a foot bar 130 configured to enable a user to lock the first leg 80 and the second leg 94 relative to each other in an extended position or a collapsed position. For example, the foot bar 130 can be coupled to the second leg 94, as shown. Engagement of the foot bar 130 can enable the locking mechanism to lock, and disengagement of the foot bar 130 can unlock the locking mechanism to enable a user to transition between the extended position and the collapsed position. Figure 3 As shown, when the multi-purpose workbench 10 is in the extended position, the work surface 12 can extend a height H1 above the floor surface. The height H1 can be in the range of from about 30 inches to about 36 inches, such as from about 32 inches to about 33 inches, for example, about 33.6 inches.

[0040] The foot section 102 of the second leg 94 may include a wheel assembly 110. The wheel assembly 110 may include a wheel 112 and an axle 114. In one aspect of the invention having two legs 94, two wheels 112 may be provided and may be coupled by the axle 114. The wheel assembly 110 may enable the workbench 10 to be easily transported by rolling along the wheels 112.

[0041] Returning to the first leg 80, the handle 116 can be removably coupled to the coupling section 84. The platform 120 can be removably coupled to the foot section 86. The platform 120 can include a platform body 124 and a platform frame 122 configured to couple with the foot section 86, such as by insertion. The platform body 124 can have a generally rectangular shape to provide a surface area 126 for supporting one or more objects, such as storage containers. When the workbench 10 is in the collapsed position, the platform 120 can extend generally perpendicular to the work surface 12, thereby forming a support area 128 between the work surface 12 and the platform surface area 126. In this way, the platform 120 can enable the multi-purpose workbench 10 to function as a transport dolly in the collapsed position, such as a storage container. Figure 2 As shown, for transporting items supported by the platform 120 and the work surface 12 in the support area 128 .

[0042] The multi-purpose workbench 10 of the present invention can stand alone in an upright position (with the work surface oriented vertically), i.e., when it is in a collapsed position or a storage position, without the need for external support. In this arrangement, the multi-purpose workbench 10 can also be referred to as a multi-purpose transport dolly or trolley, such as Figure 2As shown and described above. The leg assembly 14 can form a frame for a transport dolly. The work surface 12 can form a support surface for a transport dolly. The collapsed position of the leg assembly 14 described above can also be referred to as a storage position of the leg assembly 14 or frame. When standing upright, the wheel assembly 110 and the platform frame 122 can support the multi-purpose workbench 10 on the ground or floor.

[0043] The multi-purpose workbench 10 can further be used in a horizontal orientation when in the collapsed position, such as for storing raw materials or keeping materials off the ground so that taller work items (cabinets, doors, etc.) can be placed on them while working. When the multi-purpose workbench 10 is in the collapsed position, with the work surface 12 in a horizontal orientation, the surface 20 can have a height H2 of about 10 inches to about 15 inches (such as about 12.5 inches) from the floor. For example, depending on what the user's current application is, a lower height may be beneficial for the operator to have a more advantageous or more appropriate working height.

[0044] like Figure 7 As further shown in FIG. 1 , when the multi-purpose workbench 10 is in the collapsed position, wherein the work surface 12 is in a horizontal orientation, the platform 18 can extend a height H3 above the floor. The height H3 can range from about 24 inches to about 30 inches. The typical height of a tonneau (i.e., truck bed) cover is about 18 inches to 22 inches. Therefore, the inventors have discovered that the removability of the platform 16 from the leg assembly 14 can enable a user to transport or store the multi-purpose workbench 10 of the present invention in a standard work truck, under the tonneau cover.
