[0018] The following detailed description is merely illustrative and is not intended to limit the embodiments and / or the application or uses of the embodiments. In addition, there is no intention to be bound by any express or implied information presented in the above background or summary or detailed description.
[0019] One or more embodiments will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference numerals are used to refer to like elements throughout. In the following description, for purposes of explanation, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a more thorough understanding of one or more embodiments. However, it will be apparent that in various circumstances, one or more embodiments may be practiced without these specific details.
[0020] definition:
[0021] Two-level inverter: The main function of the inverter is to convert DC to AC. A two-level inverter produces an AC output voltage that can take on two possible levels (usually positive and negative of the DC supply voltage), thus producing a staircase approximation of a sinusoidal waveform.
[0022] Multilevel inverter: A multilevel inverter is an advanced type of power electronic inverter designed to overcome some of the limitations of traditional two-level inverters, particularly in terms of harmonic distortion and voltage stress across the switching devices. Multilevel inverters generate output voltage waveforms that can exhibit more than two levels, typically achieving a closer approximation to a sinusoidal waveform. This capability allows for reduced harmonic distortion, lower electromagnetic interference (EMI), and the ability to operate at higher voltages with lower switching losses.
[0023] DC bus capacitors: DC bus capacitors are used to smooth out voltage fluctuations on the DC bus, thereby providing a stable voltage supply to the inverter. This is crucial during dynamic load conditions (such as acceleration and deceleration) where the demand on the power source changes rapidly.
[0024] Electric Machine: The electric machine in an electric vehicle plays a vital role in converting electrical energy into mechanical energy to propel the vehicle. These machines are electric motors, which can also act as generators during regenerative braking, capturing kinetic energy and converting it back into electrical energy to recharge the battery.
[0025] An electric drive includes an electric motor or motor and converts electrical energy from a power supply system or battery into mechanical energy that can be used to generate motion. Electric drives are commonly used in electric vehicles, industrial machines, and electrical appliances. Electric drives are typically connected to one or more batteries on an electric vehicle network. Specific contactors or specific DC-DC converters are used to interconnect the batteries and supply power to the electric drive from the batteries. The electric drive also uses a power electronics controller that can manage the flow of electrical energy delivered by the DC source and control the speed and torque of the motor. Therefore, multiple hardware components are used in the electric drive to interconnect different batteries, reduce the DC voltage, and control the amount of electrical energy delivered to the motor. In addition, electric drives typically obtain power from a single type of battery cell chemistry and cannot be optimized for different parameters.
[0026] Embodiments described herein include systems, methods, and apparatus that can include energy storage systems with different corresponding battery cell chemistries that can be used to generate electrical energy to drive the motor of an electric drive unit (or electric drive). The different corresponding battery cell chemistries can be primarily utilized via a traction inverter, but the traction inverter can also control the motor. For example, different energy storage systems can be interconnected via a power electronic converter that can also serve as a traction inverter to convert DC power from the energy storage system into AC power to drive and control the motor without the need for additional components. More specifically, embodiments described herein relate to electric drive designs that can combine at least two different battery cell chemistries within two corresponding electrically isolated energy storage systems. Such electric drives can be used within electric vehicles to enhance the overall performance, drivability, and efficiency of the electric vehicle. For example, an electric drive unit can include two or more energy storage systems that utilize different corresponding battery cell chemistries that can be tailored to specific driving conditions. In addition, the two or more energy storage systems can be electrically isolated from each other to ensure independent management of the two or more energy storage systems for optimal operation. Power electronic converters can also be used to connect two or more energy storage systems in an electric vehicle (while maintaining electrical isolation between the two or more energy storage systems). The power electronic converter can have the additional function of acting as a power electronic inverter or traction inverter for the electric vehicle. Such an electric drive can also be used in industrial machines or other electromechanical systems. As described above, the electric drive is typically connected to one or more batteries on the electric vehicle network, and specific contactors or specific DC-DC converters are used to interconnect the batteries and supply power from the batteries to the electric drive. An embodiment of the present disclosure provides an electric drive that includes more than one type of power input (for example, batteries with different cell chemistries or other types of energy storage systems), and multiple power inputs in the electric drive can be directly interconnected without the need for any additional electronic components between the power inputs.
[0027] Typically, an electric drive unit can employ multiple energy storage systems with different corresponding characteristics, behaviors, and chemistries, which can allow the electric drive unit to be optimized for different parameters. For example, a first battery cell chemistry may be more suitable for producing a higher energy density in the electric drive unit, a second battery cell chemistry may be more suitable for producing a higher power density in the electric drive unit, and so on. In an electric vehicle, a higher energy density can lead to a longer range for the electric vehicle, a higher power density can lead to better performance for the vehicle, and so on. Therefore, the electric drive unit can be used to optimize various parameters of a larger system. In various embodiments, different battery cell chemistries can also lead to different corresponding charge and load curves for the energy storage system. In this regard, the energy storage system can be optimized for faster charging, longer life, etc. In various embodiments, the different chemistries can be selected from Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) chemistry, Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistry, Lithium Cobalt Oxide (LCO) chemistry, or another type of battery cell chemistry. The energy storage system can be a battery, a fuel cell, a supercapacitor, or other type of energy storage system. As described above, the power electronic converter can be connected to different energy storage systems and function as a traction inverter, and the power electronic converter can have different topologies. For example, the power electronic converter can have a two-level or multi-level inverter topology that can be combined with an open-ended winding machine, and the traction inverter can be an NPC inverter, etc. In various embodiments, the power electronics within the power electronic converter can select different energy storage systems to drive the motor. For example, based on the parameters to be enhanced, the power electronics within the power electronic converter can select different energy storage systems to drive the motor at different times or operating periods of the electric drive unit.
[0028] The embodiments depicted in one or more figures described herein are for illustration only, and thus, the architecture of the embodiments is not limited to the systems, devices, and / or components depicted therein, nor to any specific order, connection, and / or coupling of the systems, devices, and / or components depicted therein. For example, in one or more embodiments, the non-limiting systems described herein (such as Figure 1 The non-limiting system 100 shown here and / or its system) may also include the operating environment (such as Figure 8 One or more computers and / or computing-based elements described in the operating environment 800 shown in FIG. 1 may be associated, interacted, and / or coupled. In one or more of the described embodiments, the computers and / or computing-based elements may be combined to implement the combined Figure 1and / or used in combination with one or more of the computer-implemented operations shown and / or described in other figures described herein.
[0029] Figure 1 A block diagram is shown of an exemplary non-limiting system 100 that can generate electrical energy in an electric drive using a variety of different battery cell chemistries, according to one or more embodiments described herein.
[0030] The non-limiting system 100 can be used to solve problems (e.g., related to electric vehicles, electric drives, hybrid battery chemistries, etc.) that are highly technical in nature and are not abstract and cannot be performed by a human as a set of mental actions. Furthermore, some of the processes performed by the non-limiting system 100 can be executed to perform defined tasks related to generating electrical energy via an electric drive using hybrid battery chemistries. The non-limiting system 100 can be used to solve new problems that arise due to advances in the aforementioned technologies, etc. The non-limiting system 100 can provide technical improvements to electric drives by increasing their performance efficiency, reducing the number of components employed in the electric drive, and employing a variety of battery chemistries tailored to different performance parameters of the electric drive. By employing such an electric drive in an electric vehicle, the non-limiting system 100 can provide additional improvements by allowing for flexible system designs for the electric vehicle, allowing the electric vehicle to incorporate multiple smaller batteries with various battery chemistries rather than a single large battery with a single battery chemistry. Such an embodiment can provide advantages in terms of physical space constraints within the electric vehicle and in terms of enhancing the different performance parameters of the electric vehicle by controlling the energy storage system via control software.
[0031] In various embodiments, non-limiting system 100 may include an energy storage system group 104 (e.g., a first energy storage system group). In various embodiments, energy storage system group 104 may include one or more energy storage systems, and each energy storage system may include multiple cells containing a first cell chemistry. That is, each cell within each energy storage system within energy storage system group 104 may contain only the first type of cell chemistry. It should be understood that each cell within a single energy storage system within non-limiting system 100 may include the same cell chemistry, as employing cells with different chemistries within a single energy storage system may cause the different chemistries to react with each other, which may be undesirable. In some embodiments, each energy storage system within energy storage system group 104 may be a battery / battery pack. In other embodiments, each energy storage system may be a fuel cell, an ultracapacitor, or another type of energy storage system now known or developed in the future. In various embodiments, the first cell chemistry may be an NMC chemistry, an LFP chemistry, an LCO chemistry, or another type of cell chemistry. In some embodiments, the first cell chemistry may be selected to target the energy density of electric drive unit 102.
[0032] In various embodiments, the non-limiting system 100 may also include an energy storage system group 106. In various embodiments, the energy storage system group 106 (e.g., a second energy storage system group) may include one or more energy storage systems, and each energy storage system may include multiple cells that include a second cell chemistry that may be different from the first cell chemistry. That is, the individual cells in each energy storage system of the energy storage system group 106 may only include the second type of cell chemistry. In some embodiments, the individual energy storage systems in the energy storage system group 106 may be batteries / battery packs. In other embodiments, the individual energy storage systems may be fuel cells, supercapacitors, or other types of energy storage systems now known or developed in the future. In various embodiments, the second cell chemistry may be an NMC chemistry, an LFP chemistry, an LCO chemistry, or another type of cell chemistry. In some embodiments, the second cell chemistry may be selected so that the second cell chemistry can be targeted to the power density of the electric drive unit 102.
[0033] In various embodiments, the respective energy storage systems in energy storage system group 104 may have a first packaging type, and the respective energy storage systems in energy storage system group 106 may have a second packaging type different from the first packaging type. Such embodiments of the present disclosure can provide an efficient packaging solution for systems with mixed cell chemistries by allowing two or more different energy storage systems to have different respective packaging sizes and formats. Furthermore, in various embodiments, the respective energy storage systems in energy storage system group 104 and energy storage system group 106 can have different voltage levels and different lifespans. Due to the first and second cell chemistries, the respective energy storage systems in energy storage system group 104 and energy storage system group 106 can also charge at different respective charging rates and discharge at different respective discharging rates. In various embodiments, the first cell chemistry can generate a first charge curve and a first load curve, and the second cell chemistry can generate a second charge curve and a second load curve. The second charge curve can be different from the first charge curve, and the second load curve can be different from the first load curve. The load curve can refer to a discharge curve, as discharging the energy storage system can place a load on the energy storage system. Generally, energy storage system group 104 and energy storage system group 106 may have different respective designs / forms and characteristics. Therefore, energy storage system group 104 and energy storage system group 106 may each be targeted at different performance parameters of electric drive unit 102 .
[0034] Embodiments of the present disclosure in which the respective energy storage systems of the non-limiting system 100 can be charged at different respective charging speeds can provide the non-limiting system 100 with a fast DC charging capability such that one energy storage system (e.g., in the energy storage system group 104 and the energy storage system group 106) can be charged faster than another energy storage system (e.g., in the energy storage system group 104 and the energy storage system group 106). This capability can be beneficial in situations where charging time is limited. Embodiments of the present disclosure in which the respective energy storage systems of the non-limiting system 100 can have different voltage levels / asymmetric voltage levels can make the non-limiting system 100 more suitable for high voltage system designs. In such embodiments, different energy storage systems can have different voltage levels depending on the open circuit voltage (OCV) of energy storage systems having the same number of cells. The OCV of an energy storage system can be defined as the voltage of the energy storage system when the energy storage system is not connected to any load.
[0035] In some embodiments, the non-limiting system 100 can be employed in an electric vehicle, where a first cell chemistry can be targeted at the energy density of the electric drive unit 102 to increase the range of the electric vehicle, and a second cell chemistry can be targeted at the power density of the electric drive unit 102 to improve the performance of the electric vehicle. For example, the energy storage system group 104 can include high-energy-density cells that can be designed (via a first cell chemistry) for long-range driving, and such cells can prioritize energy density, for example, over other parameters, to extend the overall range of the electric vehicle. Such cells may be ideal for highway or continuous driving scenarios. Similarly, the energy storage system group 106 can include high-power-density cells that can be tailored for situations requiring rapid acceleration and deceleration (via a second cell chemistry), and such cells can provide enhanced power output. Such cells may be ideal for stop-and-go urban driving conditions, highways, and / or performing rapid acceleration or regeneration of the electric vehicle. In general, a multi-cell chemistry approach can maximize the range of the electric vehicle by leveraging the strengths of each type of cell chemistry. Additionally, in various embodiments, the combination of energy storage system group 104 and energy storage system group 106 can implement redundancy in the non-limiting system 100. For example, the combination of energy storage system group 104 and energy storage system group 106 can prevent a loss of propulsion in an electric vehicle due to the loss of one type of energy storage system. For example, in the event of a failure in one energy storage system or the loss of one battery pack due to a failure in one battery cell, the non-limiting system 100 can continue to generate energy to propel the electric vehicle. Furthermore, the combination of different cell chemistries can allow for the use of multiple smaller battery packs in electric vehicles where large batteries cannot be used due to physical space constraints.
[0036] In various embodiments, energy storage system group 104 and energy storage system group 106 can be connected via power electronic converters 110. However, the individual energy storage systems in energy storage system group 104 and energy storage system group 106 can remain electrically isolated from each other. This electrical isolation can ensure independent management of the individual energy storage systems in energy storage system group 104 and energy storage system group 106 to control the respective amounts of power drawn from the individual energy storage systems in energy storage system group 104 and energy storage system group 106. In various embodiments, the independent management can be performed via a control system (not shown) of power electronic converters 110. In other words, the independent management of how power can be drawn from each energy storage system of non-limiting system 100 can be regulated by the control system of the inverters (i.e., power electronic converters 110) that can interconnect the respective energy storage systems of non-limiting system 100. This electrical isolation can also prevent currents from rotating in the non-limiting system 100, such as common-mode currents associated with open-ended winding configurations or circulating currents flowing between cells of an MMC converter that can rotate in the non-limiting system 100. Thus, the various energy storage systems of the non-limiting system 100 can be interconnected via the power electronic converter 110 while remaining electrically isolated from each other. Figure 2 An example of galvanic isolation of an energy storage system is shown in , which shows an open-ended winding motor connected to two different inverters, where each inverter is connected to an energy storage system having a different cell chemistry than the other. Figure 2 In the event of any failure in one inverter, the non-limiting system 100 can continue to operate via the other inverter. Thus, electrical isolation of the various energy storage systems can have multiple benefits.
[0037] In various embodiments, motor 112 may be an electric motor (or electric machine). In various embodiments, power electronic converter 110 may select energy storage system group 104 or energy storage system group 106 to generate electrical energy to drive motor 112. For example, power electronic converter 110 may be controlled via software to select energy storage system group 104 or energy storage system group 106 to generate electrical energy to drive motor 112. In one or more embodiments, each energy storage system of non-limiting system 100 may be individually controlled via software. Furthermore, the amount of energy extracted from each energy storage system may also be controlled. For example, in an embodiment in which non-limiting system 100 may be employed in an electric vehicle, the entity operating the electric vehicle (e.g., hardware, software, AI, neural network, machine, and / or user) may select one or more specific batteries to engage at any point during the drive based on the ultimate goal during the drive. For example, a battery may be selected for energy density to increase the range of the electric vehicle, and after a period of time, a battery may be selected for power density to increase the performance of the electric vehicle, e.g., in terms of acceleration or other performance parameters.
[0038] In various embodiments, the power electronic converter 110 can function as a traction inverter to convert DC power from the energy storage system group 104 and the energy storage system group 106 into AC power to drive the motor 112. That is, the power electronic converter 110 can utilize different energy sources of the non-limiting system 100 to drive the motor 112 and simultaneously control the motor 112 (e.g., by managing the flow of electrical energy and controlling the speed and torque generated by the motor 112), rather than simply controlling the motor 112. Furthermore, the power electronic converter 110 can be used alone without additional components. This can be achieved by employing a multilevel converter as the power electronic converter 110. In this regard, the power electronic converter 110 can be both a converter and a DC-to-AC inverter with more than one energy source. Due to the unique charge and load profiles of the energy storage system group 104 and the energy storage system group 106, interconnecting the energy storage system group 104 and the energy storage system group 106 can be challenging. However, as described above, the power electronic converter 110 can also interconnect the energy storage system group 104 and the energy storage system group 106. Depending on the motor 112, in some embodiments, the non-limiting system 100 may include two or more power electronic converters with separate energy sources, as described below. Thus, in some embodiments discussed herein, Figure 1 The power electronic converter 110 shown in FIG. 1 may represent two or more inverters coupled to respective energy sources.
[0039] As described above, in various embodiments, the power electronic converter 110 can have a two-level topology or a multi-level topology with n levels, where n≥3, and the multi-level topology can be selected based on the type of motor 112 employed by the non-limiting system 100. For example, the power electronic converter 110 can be a flying capacitor inverter, an NPC inverter, an active neutral point clamped (ANPC) inverter, a T-type NPC inverter, an MMC inverter, a CHB inverter, a multi-source inverter, or other suitable inverter types. In some embodiments, the motor 112 can be an open-ended winding motor coupled to two inverters connected to each end of the winding of the motor 112, and the power electronic converter 110 can represent two inverters. In this regard, the electric drive unit 102 can represent a combination of the power electronic converter 110 and the motor 112. Some of the topologies listed herein are explained in more detail below with reference to subsequent figures. In various embodiments, the power electronic converter 110 may have only one type of topology (e.g., NPC, T-type NPC, ANPC, MMC, CHB, or another type of topology). However, a single motor, such as the motor 112, may be compatible with different types of inverter topologies. In various embodiments, multiple electric drive units 102 having different corresponding topologies for the power electronic converter 110 may be combined in a larger system. For example, an electric vehicle may have a motor coupled to an NPC inverter at the front of the electric vehicle and a motor coupled to a CHB converter at the rear of the electric vehicle. Typically, the electric drive of an electric vehicle may include only one type of inverter topology, and the electric vehicle may include additional electric drives with different inverter topologies. Thus, different inverter topologies may be combined in a single system (e.g., an electric vehicle).
[0040] In one embodiment, non-limiting system 100 may additionally include an energy storage system group 108. Energy storage system group 108 may include one or more energy storage systems, which may be connected to each other, to energy storage system group 104, and to energy storage system group 106 via power electronic converters 110. Each energy storage system in energy storage system group 108 may remain electrically isolated from each other, from energy storage system group 104, and from energy storage system group 106. In various embodiments, the one or more additional energy storage systems may each include one or more cell chemistries that may be different from each other, from the first cell chemistry, and from the second cell chemistry. In various embodiments, the one or more cell chemistries may be selected from the group consisting of an NMC chemistry, an LFP chemistry, an LCO chemistry, or another type of cell chemistry. Furthermore, the one or more cell chemistries may each be optimized for different performance parameters of electric drive unit 102. For example, the one or more cell chemistries may be optimized for specific driving conditions of an electric vehicle. It should be understood that in addition to electric vehicles, non-limiting system 100 may also be used in industrial machines or other electromechanical systems.
[0041] In some embodiments, each energy storage system in energy storage system group 108 may be a battery / battery pack. In other embodiments, each energy storage system may be a fuel cell, ultracapacitor, or other type of energy storage system now known or developed in the future. In various embodiments, the respective energy storage systems in energy storage system group 108 may have different respective packaging types. By allowing two or more different energy storage systems to have different respective packaging sizes and formats, such embodiments of the present disclosure can provide an efficient packaging solution for systems with mixed cell chemistries. Furthermore, in various embodiments, the respective energy storage systems in energy storage system group 108 may have different voltage levels, different lifespans, and may charge and discharge at different rates. In general, the respective energy storage systems in energy storage system group 108 may have different respective designs / formats and characteristics. Mixed cell chemistries can increase cell chemistry availability in non-limiting system 100, allowing energy storage systems of one type to be substituted with another type if insufficient.
[0042] Figure 2 A schematic diagram illustrates an exemplary, non-limiting topology 200 of an energy storage system having different cell chemistries connected to an electric drive including an open-ended winding motor and two inverters, according to one or more embodiments described herein. For the sake of brevity, repeated descriptions of similar elements and / or processes employed in corresponding embodiments are omitted.
[0043] As reference Figure 1 As discussed, in various embodiments, the electric drive unit 102 may include a power electronic converter 110 and a motor 112 (or electric machine). In various embodiments, the power electronic converter 110 may function as a traction inverter to convert DC power from the energy storage system group 104 and the energy storage system group 106 into AC power to drive the motor 112. That is, the power electronic converter 110 may utilize different energy sources from different energy storage systems of the non-limiting system 100 to drive the motor 112 and simultaneously control the motor 112, rather than simply controlling the motor 112. In addition, the power electronic converter 110 may be used alone without the need for additional components. This may be achieved by employing a multi-level converter as the power electronic converter 110. For example, the power electronic converter 110 may have a two-level topology or a multi-level topology having n levels, where n ≥ 3, and the multi-level topology may be selected based on the type of electric machine 112 employed by the non-limiting system 100. For example, the power electronic converter 110 may be a flying capacitor inverter, an NPC inverter, an ANPC inverter, a T-type NPC inverter, an MMC, a CHB inverter, a multi-source inverter, or another type of suitable inverter.
[0044] In some embodiments, the motor 112 may be an open-ended winding motor, and the power electronic converter 110 may represent two multilevel inverters connected to each end of the windings of the motor 112. For example, the motor 210 may be an open-ended winding motor connected to the inverter 220 and the inverter 222 shown within the dashed box. An open-ended winding motor is a motor with open windings and does not have a Y point, which is the neutral point of a three-phase circuit. Thus, the motor 210 may be a three-phase motor, and the motor 210 may be connected to the three-phase output of the inverter 220 on one side and to the three-phase output of the inverter 222 on the other side. Figure 2 , the windings corresponding to the respective phases of the motor 210 are shown by three rows of scallop patterns, and the symbol “L a,b,c " may represent the three-phase inductance of the motor 210. An open-ended winding motor such as the motor 210 may only have two terminals and therefore may only be connected to two inverters. However, other topologies for the power electronic converter 110 may have additional inverters. For example, other topologies for the power electronic converter may include multiple converter modules (e.g., MMC or CHB converters), wherein the respective converter modules may be separate complex inverter topologies including respective energy storage systems.
[0045] Energy storage system 202 having a first type of cell chemistry can be connected to the positive, negative, or terminal of inverter 220, and energy storage system 212 having a second type of cell chemistry can be connected to the positive, negative, or terminal of inverter 222. Energy storage system 202 can be electrically isolated from energy storage system 212. In various embodiments, the second type of cell chemistry can be different from the first type of cell chemistry. In various embodiments, the first type of cell chemistry and the second type of cell chemistry can be any of NMC, LFP, LCO, or another type of cell chemistry. Inverter 220 can convert DC power from energy storage system 202 to AC power to drive motor 210, and inverter 222 can convert DC power from energy storage system 212 to AC power to drive motor 210. By combining energy storage systems having different cell chemistries with an open-ended winding motor, electric drive unit 102 can be optimized and made more efficient.
[0046] Inverter 220 may include a DC bus capacitor 208. The DC bus capacitor 208 may smooth out voltage fluctuations on the DC bus, thereby providing a stable voltage supply to inverter 220, which may be critical during dynamic load conditions (such as acceleration and deceleration) where demands on the power source (e.g., energy storage system 202) can change rapidly. Inverter 220 may also include six switches 204 and diodes 206. Switches 204 may be transistors, such as metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs), insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), or another type of transistor now known or developed in the future. Diodes 206 may be semiconductor diodes. Inverter 222 may have a similar layout to DC bus capacitor 218, switches 214, and diodes 216.
[0047] Figure 3 A schematic diagram illustrates an exemplary, non-limiting topology 300 of an energy storage system having different cell chemistries connected to an electric drive including an open-ended winding motor and two inverters, according to one or more embodiments described herein. For the sake of brevity, repeated descriptions of similar elements and / or processes employed in corresponding embodiments are omitted.
[0048] Non-limiting topology 300 illustrates a portion of non-limiting topology 200 having energy storage system 202, inverter 220, and motor 210. As described above, inverter 220 and inverter 222 can be multi-level inverters. For example, inverter 220 can have three levels, each including two switches 204 and two diodes 206. Each level of inverter 220 can represent a phase of inverter 220, such that inverter 220 can generate a three-phase output, and motor 210 can be connected to the three-phase output of inverter 220 on one side. The connections between the respective phases of inverter 220 and motor 210 are illustrated by connections 302, 304, and 306. Motor 210 can be similarly connected to the three-phase output of inverter 222 on the other side, and motor 210 can be driven by energy storage system 202 and energy storage system 212.
[0049] Figure 4 A schematic diagram illustrates an exemplary, non-limiting topology 400 of an energy storage system having different cell chemistries connected to an electric drive including an NPC inverter and an electric motor, according to one or more embodiments described herein. For the sake of brevity, repeated descriptions of similar elements and / or processes employed in corresponding embodiments are omitted.
[0050] As reference Figure 1 As discussed, in various embodiments, the electric drive unit 102 may include a power electronic converter 110 and a motor 112 (or electric machine). For example, the power electronic converter 110 may be a flying capacitor inverter, an NPC inverter, an ANPC inverter, a T-type NPC inverter, an MMC, a CHB inverter, a multi-source inverter, or another suitable type of inverter. In some embodiments, the motor 112 may be an open-ended winding motor, and the power electronic converter 110 may represent two multi-level inverters connected to each end of the winding of the motor 112.
[0051] In some embodiments, motor 112 may be an electric motor, and power electronic converter 110 may be an NPC inverter coupled to motor 112. That is, motor 410 may be coupled to inverter 416, and inverter 416 may be an NPC inverter. Motor 410 may be a three-phase motor, and motor 410 may be connected to the three-phase output of inverter 416. Figure 4 In the symbol "L a,b,c ” may represent the three-phase inductance of motor 410. Inverter 416 may be further coupled to energy storage system 402 having a first type of cell chemistry and energy storage system 412 having a second type of cell chemistry different from the first type of cell chemistry. Energy storage system 402 may be electrically isolated from energy storage system 412. Inverter 416 may include DC bus capacitor 408 and DC bus capacitor 414. The DC bus capacitor may smooth out voltage fluctuations on the DC bus, thereby providing a stable voltage supply to the inverter, which may be critical during dynamic load conditions (such as acceleration and deceleration) where power requirements can change rapidly. Inverter 416 may also include switch 404 and diode 406. Switch 404 may be a transistor, such as a MOSFET, an IGBT, or another type of transistor now known or developed in the future. Diode 406 may be a semiconductor diode. Inverter 4 16 can be a multi-level inverter having n levels, where n ≥ 3, and each level of the inverter 416 can include four switches 404 and six diodes 406. For example, the non-limiting topology 400 corresponds to a three-level topology, and the inverter 416 is shown as a three-level inverter (n = 3), which can mean that the inverter 416 can take two DC inputs, one from the energy storage system 402 and the other from the energy storage system 412. However, the NPC inverter topology can be extended to more levels. For example, in one or more embodiments, the inverter 416 can have additional levels (n>3). For example, the inverter 416 can have five levels, which can mean that the inverter 416 can take four DC inputs with different corresponding battery cell chemistries. In general, an n-level NPC inverter can have (n-1) DC inputs, or in other words, an n-level NPC inverter can take (n-1) batteries.
[0052] In various embodiments, the inverter 416 can be controlled via software to select a particular energy storage system to draw energy from to the motor 410. For example, the control software can be implemented in the non-limiting system 100 so that an entity (e.g., hardware, software, AI, neural network, machine, and / or user) can select the energy storage system 402, the energy storage system 412, and / or another energy storage system (e.g., in an n-level NPC inverter) to power the motor 410 via another system directly or indirectly coupled to the non-limiting system 100. In some embodiments, the control software can also be configured to control the amount of energy drawn from the particular energy storage system selected by the entity. For example, the energy storage system 402 can be controlled to deliver more power than the energy storage system 412. This concept is not limited to the NPC inverter topology and can be applied to other topologies of the power electronic converter 110.
[0053] As described above, the inverter 416 can be a multi-level NPC inverter. For example, the inverter 416 can have three levels, each level including four switches 204 and six diodes 206. Each level of the inverter 416 can represent a phase of the inverter 416, so that the inverter 416 can generate a three-phase output via the energy storage system 402 and the energy storage system 412, and the motor 410 can be connected to the three-phase output of the inverter 416. The connection between the inverter 416 and the motor 410 is Figure 4 Connections 418, 420, and 422 are shown in FIG.
[0054] In some embodiments, the power electronic converter 110 may be a flying capacitor inverter, an ANPC inverter, a T-type NPC inverter, a CHB inverter, a multi-source inverter, or an MMC inverter. For example, in some embodiments, the motor 112 may be an electric motor, and the power electronic converter 110 may represent an MMC coupled to the motor 112. The MMC may be further coupled to energy storage systems 402 and 412 having different corresponding cell chemistries. For example, the energy storage systems 402 and 412 may be coupled to MMC boards. The MMC boards may include different power switches, electronics, etc., and the MMC may convert DC power from the energy storage systems 402 and 412 into AC power capable of powering the motor 112. In some embodiments, the power electronic converter 110 may be an MMC coupled to one or more additional energy storage systems having different corresponding cell chemistries. For example, the power electronic converter 110 may be coupled to an energy storage system including a third type of cell chemistry that may be different from the first type of cell chemistry and the second type of cell chemistry. In this regard, the number of energy storage systems may be incremented by any integer value.
[0055] By combining different cell chemistries with the MMC (or another type of inverter), the design of the non-limiting system 100 can be made more flexible. Furthermore, the various energy storage systems can be electrically isolated from one another to prevent current from circulating in the non-limiting system 100 and ensure independent management of the various energy storage systems to control the amount of power drawn from the respective energy storage systems, wherein the independent management can be performed via a control system (not shown) of the power electronic converter 110. For example, in various embodiments, the control system of the MMC can be controlled via software to select an energy storage system to draw energy from to the motor 112. For example, the control software can be implemented in the non-limiting system 100 so that an entity (e.g., hardware, software, AI, a neural network, a machine, and / or a user) can select energy storage system 402, energy storage system 412, and / or another energy storage system to power the motor 112 via another system directly or indirectly coupled to the non-limiting system 100. The control software can also be configured to control the amount of energy drawn from a particular energy storage system selected by the entity. For example, energy storage system 402 may be controlled to deliver more power than energy storage system 412 .
[0056] Figure 5 A schematic diagram of an exemplary non-limiting topology 500 of an energy storage system having different cell chemistries connected to an electric drive including a CHB converter and an electric motor according to one or more embodiments described herein is shown. For the sake of brevity, repeated descriptions of similar elements and / or processes employed in the corresponding embodiments are omitted.
[0057] As reference Figure 1As discussed, in various embodiments, the electric drive unit 102 may include a power electronic converter 110 and a motor 112 (or electric machine). In one or more embodiments, two or more power electronic converters (such as the power electronic converter 110) may be used as respective traction inverters to convert DC power from the first energy storage system group and the second energy storage system group into AC power to drive the motor of the electric vehicle. For example, in some embodiments, the motor 112 may be an open-ended winding motor, and the power electronic converter 110 may represent two multi-level inverters connected to each end of the winding of the motor 112.
[0058] In some embodiments, motor 112 may be an electric machine, and power electronic converter 110 may represent multiple CHB converters coupled to motor 112, such that each phase of power electronic converter 110 may include two or more CHB converters. In some embodiments, motor 510 may be a three-phase electric machine that may be coupled to a three-phase output generated by power electronic converter 110. For example, connection 508 may illustrate the first phase of power electronic converter 110, connection 514 may illustrate the second phase of power electronic converter 110, and connection 516 may illustrate the third phase of power electronic converter 110. In other embodiments, multiple CHB converters may be distributed across more than three phases. Therefore, the number of phases of the CHB-based topology of power electronic converter 110 is not limited to three.
[0059] Each of the multiple CHB converters can be coupled to an energy storage system having a different corresponding cell chemistry. For example, energy storage system 502 can include a first type of cell chemistry (cell type 1), and energy storage system 504 can include a second type of cell chemistry (cell type 2), which can be different from the first type of cell chemistry. In various embodiments, power electronic converter 110 can include one or more additional energy storage systems, such as energy storage system 506 (cell type N), which includes a third type of cell chemistry that can be different from the first and second types of cell chemistry. Energy storage system 502 can be coupled to a first CHB converter, energy storage system 504 can be coupled to a second CHB converter, energy storage system 506 can be coupled to a third CHB converter, and so on, and this pattern can be repeated for different phases of power electronic converter 110, as shown by non-limiting topology 500. Each CHB converter can convert DC power from a corresponding energy storage system into AC power that can power motor 510. In various embodiments, any combination of different cell chemistries can be implemented using CHB converters. By combining different cell chemistries with a CHB converter, the design of the non-limiting system 100 can be made more flexible. A full-bridge configuration of a single CHB converter is shown at 512. While the full-bridge configuration may be the most common configuration for a CHB converter, such a separate module (shown at 512) may include any type of inverter.
[0060] In various embodiments, multiple CHB converters can be individually controlled via software to select a specific energy storage system to draw energy from to the motor 510. For example, control software can be implemented in the non-limiting system 100 so that an entity (e.g., hardware, software, AI, neural network, machine, and / or user) can select energy storage system 502, energy storage system 504, energy storage system 506, and / or another energy storage system to power the motor 510 via another system directly or indirectly coupled to the non-limiting system 100. The control software can also be configured to control the amount of energy drawn from the specific energy storage system selected by the entity. For example, the entity can select energy storage system 504 to deliver more power than energy storage system 502.
[0061] Figure 6 A flow chart illustrating an exemplary non-limiting method 600 for generating electrical energy in an electric drive using at least two different battery cell chemistries according to one or more embodiments described herein is shown. For the sake of brevity, repeated descriptions of similar elements and / or processes employed in corresponding embodiments are omitted.
[0062] At 602, non-limiting method 600 may include connecting a first energy storage system group and at least a second energy storage system group via a power electronic converter of an electric drive unit, the first energy storage system group including a first battery cell chemistry targeted at an energy density of the electric drive unit, and at least the second energy storage system group including a second battery cell chemistry that may be different from the first battery cell chemistry and may be targeted at a power density of the electric drive unit, wherein the power electronic converter may act as a traction inverter to convert DC power from the first energy storage system group and the at least second energy storage system group to AC power to drive a motor of the electric drive unit.
[0063] At 604, the non-limiting method 600 may include electrically isolating the first energy storage system group from at least the second energy storage system group to ensure independent management of the first energy storage system group and the at least second energy storage system group to control the respective amounts of electrical power drawn from the first energy storage system group and the at least second energy storage system group, wherein the independent management is performed via a control system of the power electronic converter.
[0064] Figure 7 A flow chart illustrating an exemplary non-limiting method 700 for generating electrical energy in an electric drive using at least two different battery cell chemistries according to one or more embodiments described herein is provided. [0066] At 702, non-limiting method 700 may include determining, by an entity (e.g., hardware, software, AI, neural network, machine, and / or user), whether to optimize the electric drive unit for energy density or power density. Based on the determination by the entity, the power electronic converter may select the first energy storage system group or the second energy storage system group to power the motor.
[0067] For example, at 704, non-limiting method 700 may include selecting, by the power electronic converter, a first energy storage system group to generate electrical energy to drive the motor if the electric drive unit is to be optimized for energy density. For example, the first energy storage system group may include a first battery cell chemistry that may be optimized for energy density of the electric drive unit, and selecting the first energy storage system group to drive the motor may optimize the electric drive unit for energy density.
[0068] Likewise, at 706 , non-limiting method 700 may include selecting, by the power electronic converter, a second energy storage system group to generate electrical energy to drive the motor if the electric drive unit is to be optimized for power density. For example, the second energy storage system group may include a second battery cell chemistry that may be optimized for the power density of the electric drive unit, and selecting the second energy storage system group to drive the motor may optimize the electric drive unit for power density.
