Description

FIELD OF APPLICATION AND STATE OF THE ART

[0001] This patent application relates to a threshold for thermal separation of doors.

[0002] Today, the topic of energy conservation is becoming increasingly important, especially in the context of front doors, which are considered energy-critical interfaces in buildings. The energy-saving aspect of thermal separation is becoming increasingly important, particularly in the renovation of existing doors, but also in new installations. Exterior doors usually have a height difference between the interior and exterior environment. The main goal of thermal separation is to thermally insulate rooms from one another, with a particular focus on exterior doors.

[0003] Thresholds are already known in the state of the art. These are generally multi-part systems in which a fixing element is mounted first. A first tread element with interlocking retaining elements is then attached to this fixing element. A further element is often added on top of this. These systems usually consist of complex extruded bar profiles made either of plastic or aluminum. They contain many individual cavities that can provide thermal insulation. However, these cavities cannot be completely filled with insulating materials. Effective thermal insulation along the bottom edge of the door is particularly important for doors. This necessity results from the fact that heat transfer between the interior and exterior environment can occur particularly easily with doors.Since heat tends to flow from a warmer to a colder location according to the principle of temperature equalization, there is an increased risk of heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer at these transition points.

[0004] The bottom edge of a door forms a significant barrier through which cold or heat can easily penetrate the interior if it is not adequately insulated. This heat transfer leads to increased energy consumption, as heating or cooling systems have to work harder to maintain a comfortable room temperature. Inefficient insulation at this critical point can therefore lead to increased energy demand and, consequently, higher energy costs.

[0005] The targeted thermal insulation along the bottom edge of the door not only increases occupant comfort but also enables a sustainable reduction in energy consumption. This contributes to the conservation of natural resources and simultaneously supports efforts toward energy savings and environmental protection in buildings.

[0006] In the entrance area of front doors, it's often the case that the floor on the inside of the door is lower than the floor on the outside. This difference can vary and can be as much as 10 to 40 millimeters or even more.

[0007] When installing new doors, it's common practice to use a thermally broken threshold, which has a standard height of 20 mm. In most cases, it's necessary to leave the interior and exterior floors intact. However, if a standard thermally broken threshold is used, the difference between the exterior and interior floors increases by the aforementioned 20 mm.

[0008] The result is usually that after installing the standard threshold, the difference between the exterior and interior floor levels increases significantly. For example, if the difference was 30 mm before, the difference will be 50 mm after installing the standard threshold. This means that a 50 mm threshold must be overcome when leaving the house, for example. This can be particularly problematic for wheelchair users or those with similar needs. TASK AND SOLUTION

[0009] The primary object of the invention is to provide a threshold that specifically targets the thermal insulation at the bottom edge of doors, while minimizing the elevation of the threshold.

[0010] Another particular object of the invention is to provide a threshold that is easy to install and stable in use.

[0011] Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a threshold which offers improved thermal insulation.

[0012] The threshold according to the invention is preferably characterized by a flatter construction compared to the prior art. This enables a significant reduction in the overhang above a floor, thereby achieving improved aesthetic integration and usability. The innovation lies in the fact that the threshold has a space-saving construction that simultaneously maintains and even improves its insulating and functional properties. This aspect offers clear advantages in the design of door and floor transitions, especially in situations where a flatter design is preferred.

[0013] The proposed threshold is primarily designed for installation in front doors. The concealed threshold is particularly suitable for use in cases where an old front door is being replaced with a new one.

[0014] The proposed threshold preferably increases the difference between the exterior and interior floor levels by only 5 mm. While the difference was 30 mm before the door replacement mentioned in the prior art, the difference after replacement with the threshold according to the invention is preferably only 35 mm. This means that the threshold that must be overcome is significantly lower, thus minimizing potential problems for people with mobility impairments.

[0015] A threshold for thermally separating doors is proposed. Such a threshold has a straight profile rail with a flat upper side and two legs. According to the invention, the threshold has an insulating element with a shape that matches the profile rail. When the insulating element is mounted on the profile rail, the flat upper side of the insulating element rests directly against the flat upper side of the profile rail, and the sides of the insulating element rest directly against the respective legs of the profile rail.

[0016] A threshold, commonly found on a door, comprises a horizontal structure placed along the bottom edge of the door. This threshold can serve to create a transition between the interior and exterior environments while simultaneously serving multiple functions. Typically, it allows for seamless opening and closing of the door while also providing a barrier against the ingress of drafts, moisture, and foreign matter.

[0017] Such a threshold can also help minimize temperature differences between indoor and outdoor areas. A height difference can be integrated, which serves to thermally insulate the interior from the outside environment. This elevation prevents cold or heat from passing directly under the door, helping to reduce energy loss and improve room insulation. However, it is important to note that a threshold does not necessarily have to have such a height difference. Typically, the threshold is considered a separate component, not part of the door leaf. This allows for separate customization and design of the threshold according to specific requirements and preferences.

[0018] A profile rail is an elongated, usually narrow structure with a specific geometric shape. It forms a fundamental component of the threshold and is usually made of a sturdy material such as metal or plastic. The profile rail is designed to be placed along the bottom of the door, forming a horizontal base on which the door rests when closed.

[0019] The profile rail has a flat top and two side legs that extend vertically downwards. The top and / or at least a portion of one of the side legs serve as a support surface for the door when closed. The basic shape of the profile rail preferably resembles an inverted "U" shape. This characteristic design is characterized by a horizontal base that extends along the bottom edge of the door. From this base, the two side legs extend downwards, creating an open shape that preferably resembles the inverted shape of the letter "U". This "inverted U" shape allows the threshold insulation element to be precisely positioned, creating a seamless and effective thermal separation between the interior and exterior environments.

[0020] The profile rail's shape, reminiscent of an inverted "U," is ideally suited to the requirements of the threshold for thermal separation of doors, ensuring a stable yet functionally oriented design. The side legs provide stability and serve as anchor points for the threshold.

[0021] An insulating element in this context refers to a structural component within the threshold for thermal separation of doors. This element is designed to create an effective thermal barrier between the interior and exterior environments. The insulating element is typically made of an insulating material with low thermal conductivity, thus helping to minimize heat loss in winter and limit heat gain in summer.

[0022] The shape of the insulating element is designed to fit the threshold's profile rail. When installed, the insulating element forms a continuous, seamless thermal barrier along the lower edge of the door.

[0023] The main function of the insulation element is to minimize the transfer of heat and cold between the interior and exterior environments by acting as an effective insulation layer. This contributes to the building's energy efficiency by reducing energy consumption for heating and cooling systems and increasing occupant comfort.

[0024] Ideally, the insulating element is so stable that, when installed, it effectively stiffens the profile rail. It is particularly preferred for the insulating element to be glued into the profile rail, which creates a strong and stable connection between both components. A solid and / or glued insulating element has the advantage that the insulating element not only fulfills an insulating function but also actively contributes to the rigidity of the overall structure. This integration gives the threshold additional strength and robustness, which is particularly beneficial in areas subject to higher loads.

[0025] The multipurpose function of the insulation element is another preferred aspect. In addition to its stiffening function, the insulation element also contributes to thermal insulation. This dual role makes the threshold versatile, as it not only serves to maintain insulation between the interior and exterior areas but also ensures structural integrity.

[0026] In cases where the insulating element provides stiffening for the profile rail, this allows the profile rail to be made of a softer material such as plastic. This material choice can lead to additional benefits such as reduced weight, easier processing, and cost savings without compromising the structural integrity and functionality of the threshold.

[0027] In the present invention, the profile rail is an integral component of the threshold for thermally separating doors. It forms the base structure in which the insulating element rests to achieve the desired thermal insulation. The profile rail thus ensures the stability of the threshold while simultaneously enabling easy installation and adaptation to different door sizes and types.

[0028] Some example materials for the profile rail could be: • Aluminum: Aluminum is a popular choice for profile rails due to its lightness, corrosion resistance, and robustness. It is easy to process and offers high stability. • Stainless steel: Stainless steel is known for its durability and resistance to corrosion. It is well-suited for use in humid or aggressive environments. • Plastic (e.g., PVC): Plastics like PVC are lightweight and can provide thermal insulation. They are also versatile in terms of shape and color. • Steel: Steel is a robust material that offers high load-bearing capacity. It can be available in various finishes to prevent rust. • Composite materials: Combinations of different materials can be used to optimize specific properties such as stability, insulation, water resistance or aesthetics.

[0029] The choice of material for the profile rail depends on several factors, including the desired functionality, budget, design and the environmental conditions in which the threshold will be used.

[0030] When installing on an existing door with a height offset, one of the side legs of the profile rail can be attached to an existing angle rail. The angle rail serves as additional mounting support for the threshold and ensures a stable connection between the door and the threshold. This eliminates the need to remove the existing angle rail before installing the threshold.

[0031] The ability to adjust the installation height to existing height offsets and / or existing angle rails makes it particularly easy to adapt the threshold to the specific requirements of the existing door. This ensures that the threshold sits flush with the bottom edge of the door and achieves the desired thermal insulation.

[0032] The use of an existing angle rail as part of the installation allows for a flexible and effective solution for existing doors with varying height offsets. This contributes to the adaptability of the threshold and ensures a secure and stable attachment to achieve the desired thermal break.

[0033] Furthermore, the threshold according to the invention is characterized by its high ease of processing. Individual installation is extremely straightforward, as preferably only the legs of the profile rail need to be shortened to the required dimensions and the insulating element inserted. In comparison, the prior art requires a more complex procedure, as an insulating element in the prior art must be equipped with a groove to establish a connection with the profile. This represents additional effort in production and assembly and can impair the overall efficiency of the process. The threshold according to the invention eliminates this complicated groove requirement, resulting in a more cost-effective, simpler, and time-saving installation.

[0034] In one embodiment of the invention, the two legs of the profile rail have the same height. This design aims to create a uniform and symmetrical structure for the threshold. The equal height of the legs ensures that the threshold has a balanced load distribution and / or allows for a harmonious fit to the door.

[0035] The identical height of the legs contributes to the stability and uniformity of the threshold. It can ensure that the threshold can be positioned in a straight line along the bottom edge of the door. This, in turn, supports the precise positioning of the insulation element and promotes effective thermal separation between the interior and exterior environments.

[0036] A design in which the legs of the profile rail are of the same height emphasizes the design coherence of the threshold for thermal separation of doors. This not only enables functional insulation but also aesthetically pleasing integration into the overall design of the door environment.

[0037] In one embodiment of the invention, at least one of the legs of the profile rail is flat. This allows for increased functionality and adaptability of the threshold. The flat leg of the profile rail offers various advantages in terms of installation, stability, and user-friendliness.

[0038] The flat leg makes it easier to adapt the threshold to an existing angle rail or other mounting devices. This simplifies installation and allows for precise adjustment of the threshold to the specific door. At the same time, the flat leg ensures a stable support surface for the insulation element, thus optimizing thermal insulation.

[0039] The flat design of one leg preferably allows the threshold to be harmoniously integrated into the overall structure of the door without unnecessary bulk. This preferably contributes to visual coherence and aesthetics. The specific design with at least one flat leg of the profile rail demonstrates the flexibility of the invention to meet diverse requirements in terms of functionality, adaptability, and design. In one embodiment of the invention, when the insulating element is mounted on the profile rail, the height of the legs of the profile rail is identical to the height of the sides of the insulating element. This design variant enables a seamless fit and optimal thermal separation between the threshold and the door.

[0040] The equal heights ideally achieve perfect alignment between the legs of the profile rail and the sides of the insulating element. This design ensures close contact between the profile rail and the insulating element, thus ideally even pressure distribution when the threshold is installed. This ideally creates a seamless barrier that prevents cold, heat, and unwanted elements from penetrating through the lower door area.

[0041] The identical height of the profile rail's leg height and the side height of the insulating element emphasizes the precision and efficiency of this design. This consistency in dimensions not only contributes to maximum thermal insulation, but also supports easy installation and enables even load distribution. Overall, this results in optimal performance of the threshold for thermally separating doors.

[0042] In one embodiment of the invention, at least one of the legs of the profile rail is designed perpendicular to the flat upper surface of the profile rail. This design enables the threshold to be particularly adaptable and structurally stable.

[0043] The design with a vertically aligned leg, which is perpendicular to the flat top of the profile rail, preferably enables a solid connection to the insulating element as well as precise installation and alignment of the threshold. The vertical leg preferably provides an additional support surface and thus supports the stable positioning of the threshold along the door edge.

[0044] This specific design contributes to the stability of the threshold and ensures reliable thermal separation between the interior and exterior environment.

[0045] In one embodiment of the invention, both the profile rail and the insulating element are the same length. The identical length between the profile rail and the insulating element contributes to a seamless fit when installed. This embodiment preferably ensures that the thermal insulation is consistent along the entire length of the door edge and has no gaps. This significantly improves the efficiency of the thermal break and minimizes heat loss or heat gain.

[0046] The equal length of the profile rail and the insulating element also enables easy installation and precise adjustment.

[0047] In one embodiment of the invention, the flat upper side of the profile rail has a special spatial structure: a flat extension that extends from the flat upper side.

[0048] The flat extension preferably extends parallel to the flat top of the profile rail and forms an additional support surface. This design preferably allows for overcoming unevenness between the outer and inner floor surfaces. The extension contributes to the stability of the threshold and supports even load distribution, especially when the threshold is mounted to the door.

[0049] This extension can, for example, serve various additional functions. It can be used to conceal transitions in flooring materials, thus creating a seamless and aesthetically pleasing transition. The extension can also be used to compensate for unevenness or steps in the floor, facilitating accessibility and increasing safety.

[0050] Another advantage is that the flat projection can direct water that runs down the door in the event of rain away from the doorway. This structure forms a barrier that prevents moisture from penetrating the interior, thus protecting the lifespan of the door and the condition of the flooring. By capturing and redirecting water, the projection helps prevent damage and maintain a dry interior.

[0051] This versatile design demonstrates the use of the flat extension to meet both aesthetic and functional needs. The invention thus considers not only thermal insulation but also additional aspects that can increase the utility and added value of the threshold.

[0052] The presence of this flat extension can add an additional dimension to the threshold, which can be relevant not only functionally but also aesthetically. This specific design underscores the invention's flexibility in developing innovative solutions for thermally breaking doors that are both effective and visually appealing. The flat extension of the profile rail demonstrates the careful attention to detail to achieve optimal performance and aesthetics.

[0053] In one embodiment of the invention, the flat extension of the profile rail is provided with a downward-facing thickening at its distal end. This thickening can serve several functional purposes and preferably contributes to the efficiency of the threshold.

[0054] The downward-facing thickening serves primarily to minimize contact surfaces with the floor. This allows, for example, to reduce impact sound and vibrations that could be transmitted to the threshold. This reduces the transmission of noise and disturbances from one room to another, resulting in improved acoustic insulation.

[0055] Furthermore, the thickened portion can create a sealing effect by applying a certain amount of pre-tension to the extension. This sealing effect primarily prevents water from penetrating beneath the threshold. In this design, the downward-facing thickened portion acts as a barrier that prevents moisture from penetrating, thus protecting the integrity of the interior.

[0056] This design variant demonstrates the potential applications of the flat extension, which can be used to achieve additional functional benefits beyond thermal insulation. By integrating the downward-facing thickening, the invention can be expanded to provide soundproofing and sealing properties, which, for example, increase living comfort and protection against external influences.

[0057] In one embodiment of the invention, the insulating element consists of a heat-insulating rigid foam. In particular, this is a rigid foam made of polyurethane (PU) rigid foam or polyisocyanurate (PIR) rigid foam, or mixtures of these materials. Due to their thermal insulation properties and structure, these materials are ideal for use in thresholds for thermal separation of doors.

[0058] Polyurethane (PU) rigid foam and polyisocyanurate (PIR) rigid foam are well-known materials valued for their high thermal insulation properties. They have low thermal conductivity, meaning they can efficiently block heat. These properties help minimize heat transfer between the interior and exterior environments, thus increasing the building's energy efficiency.

[0059] The use of these special rigid foam materials in the insulation element enables an outstanding thermal barrier, optimally contributing to the thermal separation of the threshold. The selected materials not only offer high insulation performance but are also lightweight and easy to process, enhancing the overall functionality of the threshold.

[0060] The bulk density of the insulating element is preferably from 450 to 650 kg / m 3 according to DIN EN 1602, preferably from 510 to 590 kg / m 3and particularly preferably at about 550 kg / m 3 , with a tolerance of + / - 40 kg, measured according to DIN EN 1602. This ensures an excellent balance between strength and weight, making the insulating element optimally suited for its application.

[0061] The insulating element preferably has a temperature resistance in the temperature range from -50°C to +100°C. The insulating element is preferably resistant to temperatures up to +250°C for short periods. This property enables reliable performance under various climatic conditions.

[0062] The compressive strength of the insulating element is preferably at least 5.0 MPa according to DIN 826, more preferably at least 7.0 MPa according to DIN 826 and most preferably at least 7.1 MPa according to DIN 826.7.1 MPa, measured according to DIN EN 826. This high compressive strength ensures long-lasting integrity, even under loads and mechanical influences.

[0063] The insulating element preferably has a flexural strength of 4.5 MPa. The insulating element preferably has a shear strength of 1 - 1.5 MPa. The insulating element preferably has a shear strength of 1 - 1.5 MPa, measured according to DIN EN 12089 and DIN EN 12090. These mechanical properties underline the stability and durability of the insulating element under various stress conditions.

[0064] In terms of fire behavior, the insulating element preferably meets the standard of normal flammability, with a classification of Class E / D-s3, dO according to DIN EN 13501-1. This property contributes to the insulating element meeting the highest safety standards.

[0065] The insulating element preferably has a building inspection approval Z-23.11-1819, which confirms its quality and conformity with the relevant regulations.

[0066] The thickness swelling of the insulating element is preferably 0.8%, measured according to DIN EN 68763. This shows its low susceptibility to moisture.

[0067] The screw pull-out strength of the insulating element is preferably 11.35 N / mm 2 , measured using 6 x 60 wood screws.

[0068] The thermal conductivity of the insulating element is preferably low, with a value of λ ≤ 0.087* (according to EN 12667) or 0.096 (according to DIN 4108-4) W / (m K). This low thermal conductivity supports the thermal insulation properties of the element.

[0069] These specific properties, measured according to the respective standards and preferred determination methods, give the insulating element exceptional performance and make it an optimal choice for the thermal separation of doors.

[0070] The properties are carefully defined according to standards and test procedures and help ensure that the insulating element meets the highest requirements. Character list

[0071] Further advantages and aspects of the invention emerge from the claims and from the following description of preferred embodiments of the invention, which are explained below with reference to the schematic figures. Fig. 1 shows a speed bump of the prior art in a sectional view from one end face. Fig. 2 shows a threshold according to the invention in a perspective view with the insulating element removed. Fig. 3 shows the speed bump Fig. 2 before installation on a door threshold. Fig. 4 shows the installed threshold from the Fig. 2 and Fig. 3. Fig. 5 shows the installed threshold from the Fig. 2 to 4 in a sectional view from one end. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE EMBODIMENTS

[0072] Fig. Figure 1 shows a cross-sectional view of the prior art threshold from one end face. The threshold is made up of several parts and includes a base 4 located beneath a step. This base 4 is mounted on the floor in the interior area 1. A ribbed profile rail 6 is attached to the base 4 and rests on the floor in the exterior area 2. The ribbed profile rail 6 has ribs 7 on its underside.

[0073] In this representation of the Fig. 1 shows a door 3 in the closed position. The door 3 has a seal 5, which rests against the ribbed profile rail 6 when the door 3 is closed. The nature of the ribbed profile rail 6 results in a projection A, which is clearly visible in the illustration. The projection A of the ribbed profile rail 6 is approximately 20 mm. The total difference between the outer area 2 with the ribbed profile rail 6 attached and the inner area 1 is 50 mm, with 30 mm being due to the floor difference between the outer area 2 and the inner area 1.

[0074] The Fig. Figure 2 shows an embodiment of a threshold according to the invention in a perspective view, in which an insulating element 11 according to the invention has been removed downwards from a profile rail 9 according to the invention. The profile rail 9 has a flat upper side 12 and two legs 10. The insulating element 11 has a shape that is adapted to the downwardly open space of the profile rail 9, which is created by the inside of the upper side 12 of the profile rail 9 and the respective inside of the legs 12. When the insulating element 11 is mounted on the profile rail 9, the flat upper side 13 of the insulating element 11 rests directly against the flat upper side 12 of the profile rail 9. The sides 14 of the insulating element 11 directly touch the corresponding legs 10 of the profile rail 9.

[0075] In this embodiment of the threshold, the legs 10 of the profile rail 9 preferably have the same height in the illustration shown. These legs 10 are preferably flat in this design. The height of the legs 10 of the profile rail 9 in this embodiment preferably corresponds approximately to the height of the sides 14 of the insulating element 11. In this embodiment, both legs 10 of the profile rail 9 are preferably arranged perpendicular to the flat upper side 12 of the profile rail 9.

[0076] In this embodiment, the profile rail 9 preferably has a flat extension 12'. This flat extension 12' extends from the flat upper surface 12 of the profile rail 9 and serves to rest on an outdoor floor 2. The profile rail 9 of this threshold is made of plastic, for example, while the insulating element 11 is made of rigid polyurethane foam.

[0077] Fig. 3 shows the installation location for the inventive threshold from the Fig. 2. Between an interior floor 1 and an exterior floor 2 there is a step, which in this case has a height of 2 cm. The exterior floor 2 is closed off inwards by an angle rail 8. The threshold corresponds to the Fig. 2, wherein in this illustration the insulating element 11 is arranged in its intended position within the profile rail 9.

[0078] In Fig. 4 is the threshold as shown in Fig. 2 at the installation location, as in Fig. 3, installed. In addition, the leaf of a door 3 can be seen in the closed state. It is clear that the extension 12' rests on the floor in the outdoor area 2. The insulating element 11 is positioned on its underside on the floor in the indoor area 1. In this embodiment, the profile rail 9 is fastened to the angle rail 8 and both to the floor in the indoor area 1 and to the floor in the outdoor area 2 with a mounting adhesive (not shown). Alternative fastening means such as dowels and / or screws are conceivable according to the invention.

[0079] Fig. 5 sets the speed threshold Fig. 4 in a sectional view along its main extension axis. This figure illustrates the difference in comparison to the state of the art in Fig. 1 considerably smaller projection B, for example of approximately 5 mm, which is made possible by this design of the threshold. The smaller projection is achieved by the flat (not ribbed) design of the upper side 12 of the profile rail 9. It can be seen that the door leaf 1 is equipped with a seal 5, whereby the insulating effect of the threshold is fully effective. In particular, a continuous insulating effect is created by the overlap or near-overlap of the insulating element 11 with the seal 5 in the vertical direction. The continuous insulating effect can be achieved in particular due to the missing ribs 7 from the prior art of the Fig.1 can be achieved. In addition, the missing ribs 7 of the prior art and the design of the profile rail 9 as a straight profile rail 9 with a flat upper side 12 and with preferably flat legs 10 facilitate the assembly of the insulating element 11 on the profile rail 9. In addition, the stability and strength of the connection between the insulating element 11 and the profile rail 9 is improved.

[0080] According to the invention, the connection between the insulating element 11 and the profile rail 9 can preferably be realized as a clamping connection or a force-locking connection. Additionally or alternatively, the connection between the insulating element 11 and the profile rail 9 can be realized as an adhesive connection.

[0081] The insulating element 11 can preferably be made of a material with high dimensional stability, good thermal insulation properties, high moisture resistance, and high fire resistance, such as Purenit. Purenit is known to be a material with a bulk density of 450 to 650 kg / m 3 according to DIN EN 1602, preferably with a bulk density of 510 to 590 kg / m 3 according to DIN EN 1602, and more preferably with a bulk density of about 550 kg / m 3 is designed according to DIN EN 1602. Purenit has a compressive strength of at least 5.0 MPa according to DIN 826, more preferably of at least 7.0 MPa according to DIN 826 and most preferably of at least 7.1 MPa according to DIN 826.

[0082] Preferably, the threshold has a 12" downward-facing thickening at its distal end. This 12" thickening contributes to the efficiency of the threshold. It creates a space that can be used by the mounting adhesive (not shown) to firmly bond the threshold to its base. This ensures a stable attachment of the threshold and contributes to its overall functionality.
