Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] FIELD OF THEINVENTION The present invention relates to a method for treating and concealing skin imperfections in a subject in need thereof by application of a silicone-based makeup composition. The present invention also relates to therapeutic makeup compositions and kits. [Background technology]
[0002] background Makeup compositions are used to enhance or highlight certain facial features, such as eyes or lips.Another important use is to camouflage the appearance of imperfect face or other physical features.Few consumers are blessed with flawless skin, and it is often desirable to hide skin imperfections. For example, adults or teenagers who suffer from acne may wish to apply makeup compositions to hide acne scars and breakouts.
[0003] Consumers do not have makeup compositions designed to treat skin defects, especially scars. In some circumstances, some makeup compositions delay or even worsen the healing process of certain skin defects. Conversely, consumers often use products that help heal skin defects, but these do not hide the defects during the healing process. For example, U.S. Patent No. 5,759,560 (Patent Document 1) discloses a silicone thermoplastic sheet suitable for use in the treatment of dermatological scars, and U.S. Patent No. 6,284,941 (Patent Document 2) discloses a bandage containing a silicone gel for the treatment of skin scars, keloids, wounds or abrasions. Also, U.S. Patent No. 6,159,494 (Patent Document 3) discloses a tape containing a gel from bulbine frutescens for treating post-operative scars. None of these products can simultaneously hide and heal scars.
[0004] Contraction of hypertrophic scars can be increased by applying silicone gel plates or sheets to the scar. Several products are commercially available for this purpose, for example Dow Corning Silastic Sheeting, Cica-Care (Smith & Nephew), Epi-Derm (Biodermis), and Nagosil (Nagor). These products are in the form of molded silicone gel sheets having a thickness of 2 to 4 millimeters. In the treatment of hypertrophic scars, these sheets are placed over the scar and worn for a relatively long period of time, often 3 to 12 months, until the scar is either reduced or eliminated. These products are large, very unsightly, and difficult to handle. Examples of patents disclosing such silicone gel sheets include U.S. Patent No. 5,759,560 (Patent Document 1); U.S. Patent No. 5,891,076 (Patent Document 4); U.S. Patent No. 5,895,656 (Patent Document 5) and U.S. Patent No. 5,919,476 (Patent Document 6). None of these products provide an aesthetic benefit to the skin like a makeup composition.
[0005] Because the healing process for many skin defects, such as severe skin scarring, can take time and can be upsetting to these defects, there is a need for makeup compositions that incorporate effective scar treatment technologies that simultaneously conceal and heal skin defects. [0089] In another embodiment related to this method, the reflective particles comprise particles that, depending on their size, structure, in particular the thickness, physical and chemical properties and surface condition of the layer(s) in which they are made, are able to reflect incident light. This reflection can, if appropriate, be strong enough to create on the surface of the composition or mixture, when applied to a support constituted, excessive gloss spots visible to the naked eye, i.e. more light spots that contrast with the environment by appearing to sparkle.
[0090] In another embodiment related to this method, the reflective particles may be selected so as not to significantly alter the coloring effect produced by the coloring agent with which they are combined, more particularly to optimize this effect in terms of color yield. [0098] In another embodiment related to this method, the makeup composition, when applied to the skin, conceals and simultaneously treats skin imperfections. In one embodiment, the degree of concealment is measured in terms of the "hiding power" or "covering power" of the material. The coverage of the makeup composition can be tested by various methods known in the art and / or described herein. For example, a standard test for measuring the hiding power of a material that dries to form a film is the Dry-Film Coverage Test Method according to ASTM D 6441-05. See ASTM International Designation: D 6441-05 "Standard Test Methods for Measuring the Hiding Power of Powder Coatings", which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.
[0099] In one embodiment related to this method, the following formula can be used to measure the degree of hiding: Contrast Ratio (Coverage) (Cw) = 100 x Ro / Rw, where Rw refers to the reflectance of the test makeup composition applied on a white substrate, Ro refers to the reflectance of the test makeup composition applied on a black substrate, and the luminous reflectance is measured by a Konica Minolta handheld spectrophotometer. The method includes drawing the sample onto a polyester film to control the thickness; waiting 15 minutes for the sample to dry, placing the polyester onto a LENETA card, and measuring the reflectance (L* value), Ro (black background), and Rw (white background) using a spectrophotometer. Each LENETA card can be read with three data points on a black background, and this can be repeated for six different LENETA cards. Eighteen data points can be collected and the contrast ratio can be determined. For example, the contrast ratio can be based on the average of these data points. The coverage value can then be normalized based on the solids % of the formula to account for differences in film thickness. A high contrast ratio translates to a film with high coverage. Some embodiments of the disclosure herein provide makeup compositions with a coverage in the range of about 30 to about 200, about 40 to about 200, about 50 to about 200, about 60 to about 200, about 70 to about 200, about 80 to about 200, about 90 to about 200, about 100 to about 200, about 100 to about 190, about 100 to about 180, about 100 to about 170, about 100 to about 160, about 100 to about 150, about 100 to about 140, about 100 to about 130, about 100 to about 120, or about 100 to about 110. Preferably, the coverage of the makeup compositions disclosed herein is about 30, about 50, about 80, about 100, about 150, or about 200.
[0100] In another embodiment related to this method, the makeup composition disclosed herein weakens the phylogenetic process by which scars are formed. In general, after a full-thickness wound occurs by penetration through the epidermis into the dermis layer, it may take several weeks for the epidermis to fully regenerate. The new immature stratum corneum allows an abnormally high level of transepidermal water loss. This dehydration of the stratum corneum signals keratinocytes to produce cytokines, which in turn signal fibroblasts to synthesize and release collagen. Naturally, under hygienic conditions that are far less effective at preventing infection, wound healing is optimized for speed, as opposed to quality of healing. This speed optimization produces excess collagen, which rushes into the scar site and is responsible for many of the undesirable physical and aesthetic properties associated with scarring.
[0101] The makeup compositions disclosed herein provide improved occlusion and hydration to the wound bed. They help the newly formed immature stratum corneum maintain optimal moisture levels. Unlike other dressings, the makeup compositions disclosed herein provide a level of occlusion similar to normal skin and significantly reduce collagen formation at the scar site. Thus, stratum corneum hydration is normalized and undesirable physical and aesthetic properties associated with scarring are minimized. In a preferred embodiment, the makeup composition comprises a significant amount of silicone.
[0102] In another embodiment related to this method, the makeup composition disclosed herein generates a negatively charged electrostatic field due to friction between the composition and the skin, which is believed to aid in the alignment of collagen cells and reduce the appearance of raised scars.
[0103] In another embodiment related to this method, the makeup compositions disclosed herein inhibit the body's natural reaction to increase skin capillaries via hyperemia, thereby reducing the exaggerated blood supply and healing process to the scar site, as well as the apparent intensity and physical characteristics of a fully formed scar.
[0104] The methods disclosed herein should not be limited to any mechanism described herein.
[0105] In another embodiment related to this method, the skin defect is a scar. In one embodiment, the scar is selected from keloid scar, hypertrophic scar, contracture scar, acne scar, and surgical scar. In another embodiment, the scar is a surgical scar after removal of sutures about 7 to about 14 days after surgery. Preferably, the scar is a surgical scar after removal of sutures about 7 days after surgery, about 8 days after surgery, about 9 days after surgery, about 10 days after surgery, about 11 days after surgery, about 12 days after surgery, about 13 days after surgery, or about 14 days after surgery.
[0106] In another embodiment related to this method, the makeup composition further provides UV protection. In one embodiment, the makeup composition blocks both UV-B and UV-A radiation. In one embodiment, the makeup composition has a sun protection factor (SPF) of about 4 to about 60, about 5 to about 60, about 6 to about 60, about 7 to about 60, about 8 to about 60, about 9 to about 60, about 10 to about 60, about 10 to about 50, about 10 to about 40, about 10 to about 30, about 10 to about 25, about 10 to about 20, about 10 to about 19, about 10 to about 18, about 10 to about 17, about 10 to about 16, or about 10 to about 15. [0162] The following examples are provided to facilitate a clearer understanding of certain embodiments of the present invention. It should be understood that the examples are given by way of illustration only. From the above description and examples, those skilled in the art can ascertain the essential features of the present invention, and can make various changes and modifications to the present invention to suit various applications and situations without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. As a result, the present invention is not limited by the illustrative examples described below, but rather is defined by the appended claims.
[0163] Example 1 a. Preparation of Make-up Composition I 65g of polymethylsilsesquioxane, 0.1g of cetyl dimethicone, 1.6g of behenoxy dimethicone, 0.5g of trimethylsiloxysilicate, and 2.8g of polydimethylsiloxane are mixed together. The mixture is ground and sieved to obtain Part A. Then, 10g of titanium dioxide, 0.5g of D&C Red 30, 10.0g of titanium mica, 4.0g of zinc stearate, and 5.5g of talc are mixed, ground, and sieved to obtain Part B. Part A and Part B are mixed and ground until a homogeneous powder is formed. The powder is further sieved to obtain Make-up Composition I, which is packaged in a metal container.
[0164] b. Coverage test Make-up composition I is painted onto a polyester film of control mil thickness. The polyester is placed on a LENETA card. The reflectance Ro (black background) and Rw (white background) are measured using a spectrophotometer. Each LENETA card can be read with three data points on a black background, which can be repeated for six different LENEAT cards. 18 data points are collected and the contrast ratio is determined based on the formula C=100*Ro / Rw.
[0165] c. SPF value Make-up Composition I is tested on five subjects for sun protection (SPF) according to the method described in Federal Register Vol. 46, No. 17, Tuesday Jan. 27, 1981. The SPF result is expected to be about 20.
[0166] d.How to use Makeup composition I (1 g) is applied to the keloid scar of the skin by gentle massage once in the morning and once in the afternoon. The gentle massage ensures that it adheres to the skin. When makeup composition I is applied, the keloid scar is invisible and hidden.
[0167] Example 2 Bunny ears model Using a skin biopsy punch and a dissecting microscope, 7 mm wounds are made on the ventral surface of each ear of four 3 kg New Zealand White rabbits (six wounds per ear). The wounds include complete removal of the epithelium, dermis, and perichondrium. The wounds are covered with polyurethane film until healing is complete (17 days). The wounds on one ear are then treated once a day for 30 days by topical application of makeup composition I of Example 1. The six wounds on the other ear serve as untreated controls. The animals are sacrificed on the 36th day of the experiment.
[0168] Scar tissue is harvested, bisected at the highest point of the scar, and processed for histological analysis using hematoxylin and eosin staining. Scar elevation is quantified by measuring the "scar elevation index" at 100x magnification by an observer blinded to the treatment. Scar elevation index is calculated as the scar dermis area (S) divided by the normal dermis area (N), which is based on the dermis height of the adjacent unwounded skin (R. Reid et al., J Plast Reconstr Aesthet Surg. (2007), 60:64-72).
[0169] The average scar elevation index for control animals (N=20) is expected to be about 1.7, while the average scar elevation index for treated animals (N=19) is expected to be about 1.40.
