Description

Adjustable Vehicle SeatDescription

[0001] The invention relates to a vehicle seat for a vehicle and to a vehicle witch such a vehicle seat.

[0002] Vehicle seats are regularly adjustable to allow for an adaption of the vehicle seat to various use cases in the vehicle. For example, to allow large items to be transported in a trunk, backrests of rear seats are often foldable. Vehicle seats with a foldable backrest and with a foldable seat part are shown in DE 10 2006 008 209 A1 and in EP 1 544 027 A2. However, these designs only provide a limited comfort.

[0003] Another adjustable vehicle seat is described in DE 10 2020 116 963 A1. However, this solution is relatively complex.

[0004] WO 2023 / 274623 A1 describes a further vehicle seat with a foldable seat part which allows a particularly compact folded configuration.

[0005] It is an objective of the present invention to provide an improved adjustable vehicle seat.

[0006] The objective is achieved with a vehicle seat having the features of claim 1.

[0007] Accordingly, a vehicle seat for a vehicle comprises a base, a seat part adjustably mounted on the base and a backrest. Therein, the backrest is pivotably connected to the seat part, such that a displacement of the seat part relative to the base causes a pivoting motion between the seat part and the backrest.

[0008] This allows to extend the position of the seat part and, at the same time, the relative angle to the backrest. Thereby, the vehicle seat can be configured in a more upright seating position and in a relaxing position stronger inclined backwards using a simple and robust construction of the vehicle seat. By this an improved adjustable vehicle seat is provided.

[0009] The base may be fixedly connectable (or already connected) to the vehicle, e.g., on a vehicle floor. The backrest may comprise a guide element movably supported on a guiding means. The guiding means may be fixedly connectable (or already connected) to the vehicle. This allows a simple yet robust and secure adjustable arrangement of the backrest.

[0010] For example, the guide element is linearly movable along the guiding means. As such, the guiding means may be a slot or rail that takes only little space.

[0011] The backrest may be pivotably mounted on the seat part. Movement of the seat part therefore also moves the backrest in a simple manner.

[0012] The seat part may be longitudinally adjustable relative to the base between a first position and a second position. As an example the longitudinal adjustment may be translational without a rotatory component. This allows a simple and robust construction.

[0013] The backrest has a height and a width. The height and the width are perpendicular to one another. The directions of the height and the width define a plane, herein referred to as backrest plane. The seat part may be longitudinally adjustable relative to the base along a longitudinal axis. Therein, the longitudinal axis may be arranged at an angle with respect to the backrest plane. Therefore, the seat part may be moved forward and backward allowing several seating positions.

[0014] The angle may be greater than 10 degrees, particularly greater than 45 degrees. This allows a comfortable adjustment. In the assembled state in a vehicle standing on an even plane, the  longitudinal axis may be arranged horizontally. For example, adjustment along the longitudinal axis does not change the height of the seat part in the vertical direction, or for example changes the position of the seat part in a horizontal direction more than in a vertical direction.

[0015] It may be provided that the seat part is pivotably adjustable relative to the base, e.g., between the second position and a third position. Therefore, the adjustment may first be (predominantly or only) a translation and then (predominantly or only) a rotation. This allows to flip up the seat part efficiently and also to provide comfortable seating positions. As an example, when the seat part is longitudinally displaced, a rotation axis of the seat part about which the seat part rotates between the second and third positions may also be longitudinally displaced. In other words, the vehicle seat may comprise a longitudinally displaceable rotation axis of the seat part.

[0016] In the first position an angle between the seat part and the backrest may be between 90 degrees and 180 degrees. In the third position the angle may be below 90 degrees. As such, large space may be cleared if desired.

[0017] At least one motor drive (e.g., two motor drives) may be provided for adjusting the seat part relative to the base and / or relative to the backrest. This allows a comfortable adjustment without the need for manual work. In addition, the vehicle seat may be adjusted automatically based on a selected vehicle interior setup.

[0018] The at least one motor drive may be configured for longitudinally and / or pivotably adjusting the seat part relative to the base, e.g., from the first position into the second position and from the second position into the third position. This allows a simple construction.

[0019] For example, the at least one motor drive is fixed to the base. This allows to clear a space below a seat pan of the seat part and, thereby, to increase a distance between a user occupying the seat and metal parts.

[0020] The at least one motor drive may comprise a pinion configured for relative displacement with respect to a guide of the seat part along the guide. The guide may comprise a toothed rack engaged by the pinion. This allows to use a simple and robust construction.

[0021] The toothed rack may comprise an end stop. Rotation of the pinion against the end stop may pivot the seat part relative to the base. The pinion may lift the seat part by exerting a force  against the end stop. Thus, the pinion may cause the longitudinal displacement as well as the rotation with one continuous rotating motion.

[0022] For example, a pin is provided (e.g., formed) at an axial end of the pinion. Therein, the pin may be received in a slot, e.g., of an engage plate, of the seat part. This allows to stabilize the pinion and to avoid that the pinion disengages from the toothed rack.

[0023] A guide path may be provided on one of the base and the seat part and a guide element guided along the guide path may be provided on the other one of the base and the seat part. By this, the motion of the seat part may be controlled in a simple and stable manner.

[0024] For example, the guide path comprises a linear section and / or a curved section. As such, the motion of the seat part may be predetermined precisely.

[0025] The guide path may be formed as a slot. The guide element may be formed as a pin, e.g., arranged in the slot. This allows a robust construction.

[0026] According to an aspect, a vehicle seat for a vehicle is provided. The vehicle seat may be designed in accordance with the vehicle seat described above and / or comprise any individual feature thereof. The vehicle seat of this aspect comprises a base, a seat part adjustably mounted on the base, a backrest supported on the seat part and / or on the base and at least one motor drive fixed to the base and for adjusting the seat part relative to the base and relative to the backrest. Therein, it may be provided that a pinion of the motor drive is configured to travel along a guide of the seat part. Regarding the advantages of this vehicle seat, reference is made to the description further above.

[0027] According to another aspect, a vehicle is provided, comprising the vehicle seat according to any aspect or embodiment described herein. Regarding the advantages of this vehicle seat, reference is made to the description further above.

[0028] The idea underlying the invention will be explained in more detail below with reference to the exemplary embodiments shown in the figures. Therein:

[0029] Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of a vehicle seat of a vehicle;

[0030] Fig. 2 shows an upper part of a backrest of the vehicle seat of Fig. 1 movably mounted on a vehicle body of the vehicle;

[0031] Fig. 3 shows parts of a base and of a seat part of the vehicle seat of Fig. 1;

[0032] Fig. 4 shows the seat part and the base of the vehicle seat of Fig. 1;

[0033] Fig. 5 shows a guide with a toothed rack of the seat part, the toothed rack being engaged by a pinion of a motor drive of the vehicle seat of Fig. 1;

[0034] Fig. 6 shows the motor drive of the vehicle seat of Fig. 1;

[0035] Figs. 7A-7C show the vehicle seat of Fig. 1, wherein the seat part and the backrest are arranged in a first, second and third position, respectively; and

[0036] Fig. 8A-8C show a vehicle seat, wherein a seat part of the vehicle seat is arranged in a first, second and third position, respectively.

[0037] Fig. 1 shows a vehicle seat 1A in the form of a rear seat attached to a vehicle floor 21 of a vehicle 2. The vehicle seat 1A comprises a base 10, a seat part 11 and a backrest 12. The base 10 is fixed to the vehicle floor 21. The seat part 11 is supported on the base 10. More specifically, the seat part 11 is adjustably mounted on the base 10. The backrest 12 is mounted on the seat part 11. Further, the backrest 12 is supported on a vehicle body 20 of the vehicle 2 at a location displaced from (above) the seat part 11. The vehicle body 20 and the vehicle floor 21 are fixed to one another or formed in one piece.

[0038] If a front seat located in front of the vehicle seat 1A shall be fully reclined into a relax or sleep position, space behind the front seat is required. This space is usually unavailable when the seat part 11 of the vehicle seat 1A is in a first position P1 as shown in Fig. 1 in which a user may take a seat in a relatively upright position, because the space is typically blocked by the seat part 11. Therefore, the seat part 11 may be folded up or flipped up towards the backrest 12 to so that the space for the reclined front seat becomes available.

[0039] Before the movement of the seat part 11 from the first position P1 into a second position P2 and a third position P3 will be described with reference to Figs. 7A to 7C below, the construction of the vehicle seat 1A will now be explained in more detail with reference to Figs. 1 to 6.

[0040] The base 10 comprises a left part 101 and a right part 102. The left and right parts 101, 102 are fixed to one another by means of a cross bar 103. The left and right parts 101, 102 carry the entire weight or at least the major portion of the weight of the seat part 11 and, if a user is occupying the vehicle seat 1A, the major portion of the user’s weight. The left and right parts 101, 102 are fixed to the vehicle floor 21, in this example by means of screws. The left and right parts 101, 102 comprise mounting areas, in the present example screw holes, for fixing the left and right parts 101, 102 to the vehicle floor 21. The left and right parts 101, 102 are spaced to one another in a lateral direction.

[0041] The seat part 11 is (at least in the first position P1) at least partially arranged between the left and right parts 101, 102 of the base 10. The seat part 11 comprises a seat pan 114 which carries a cushion 115. In the present example the seat pan 114 is formed by a grid defining a depression receiving the cushion 115. A left support 116 and a right support 117 of the seat part 11 are adjustably mounted on the left and right parts 101, 102 of the base, respectively. The seat pan 114 is fixed to the left and right supports 116, 117.

[0042] The backrest 12 comprises a frame 124 which also carries a cushion (not shown) . The backrest 12 is pivotably mounted to (and on) the seat part 11 by means of pivot joints 122. More specifically, the frame 124 of the backrest 12 is connected with the left support 116 via a first pivot joint 122 and with the right support 117 via a second pivot joint 122. Notably, a part of each of the pivot joints 122 is fixed to (and a part of) the seat part 11 and another part of each of the pivot joints 122 is fixed to (and a part of) the backrest 12. The backrest 12 frame 124 does not contact the base 10. The weight of the backrest 12 is supported by the seat part 11 and through the seat part 11 into the base 10 by the connection of the seat part 11 to the base 10. The pivot joints 122 are free to rotate. For example, the pivot joints 122 are each formed by a pin received in a sleeve. Thus, the pivot joints 122 may be formed particularly simple.

[0043] The pivot joints 122 connect the backrest 12 to the seat part 11 on a side of the backrest 12 facing towards the seat part 11. The backrest 12 further comprises guide elements 120 which are engaged with guiding means 14. The guiding means 14 are fixed to (or a part of) the vehicle body 20. The guide elements 120 are arranged at a part of the backrest 12 remote from the seat part 11. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the guide elements 120 are arranged at an upper end on the backrest 12. In the present example, the guide elements 120 are connected to the frame 124 of the backrest 12 by means of links 121. The guiding means 14 forms a slot, which is linear in the present example but could also be curved. The guide elements 120 are received in the respective guiding means 14 slot. The guiding means  14 guide the respective guide element 120 along a path defined by the slot. When the seat part 11 is held in a fixed position with respect to the base 10, the backrest 12 is fixed relative to the vehicle body 20 by the pivot joints 122 and the guide elements 120. Each of the guide elements 120 and the respective guiding means 14 form a sliding pivot joint.

[0044] The backrest 12 has a height H and a width W. Here, the slots extend in parallel to the height H of the backrest 12. The width W of the backrest extends in the lateral direction. The height H and the width W of the backrest 12 define a backrest plane BP.

[0045] The seat part 11 is adjustable relative to the base 10. To cause an adjustment of the seat part 11, the vehicle seat 1A comprises two motor drives 13. Alternatively, only one motor drive 13 could be provided. The motor drives 13 are arranged on opposite sides of the vehicle seat 1A. Here, each motor drive 13 is mounted on one of the left and right parts 101, 102. As shown, e.g., in Figs. 1 and 4, the motor drives 13 are arranged on a side of the respective left or right part 101, 102 facing away the other one of the left and right parts 101, 102.

[0046] As shown in Figs. 3-5, each of the left and right supports 116, 117 forms a guide 110. Each of the guides 110 comprises a toothed rack 111. The respective toothed rack 111 comprises a plurality of teeth in a linear arrangement. A pinion 130 of the respective motor drive 13 is arranged inside the corresponding guide 110 and in toothed engagement with the toothed rack 111. An activation of the motor drives 13 causes a rotation of the pinions 130. Since the rotational axes of the pinions 130 are fixed relative to the base 10, the pinions 130 rotating about these rotational axes displace the respective left and right supports 116, 117. By this, the seat part 11 is displaced along a longitudinal axis X. This displacement is linear.

[0047] To secure the engagement of the pinion 130 with the toothed rack 111, a pin 133 is formed on a free axial end of each of the pinions 130. Each of the pins 133 is received in a slot 119 in a respective engage plate 118 mounted on the corresponding left or right support 116, 117.

[0048] As a further support, and to guide the movement of the seat part 11, each of the left and right parts 101, 102 of the base 10 comprises a guide path 100. The guide paths 100 have the same shape. The guide paths 100 are formed as slots in the left and right parts 101, 102 of the base 10. The guide paths 100 have a first section S1, and a second section S2. The first and second sections S1, S2 have different forms. In the present example, the first section S1 is linear, while the second section S2 is curved. More specifically, the second section S2 follows a part of a circle. The guide elements 113 are guided along the guide paths 100 when  the seat part 11 is displaced by the motor drives 13. The guide elements 113 may be rollers or pins. When the pinions 130 travel along the toothed racks 111, the guide elements 113 travel along the first sections S1. While travelling along the first section S1, the lower end of the backrest 12 is moved together with the seat part 11. At the same time the guide elements 120 travel along the guiding means 14. By this, the angle between the seat part 11 and the backrest 12 is changed. When the seat part 11 is moved forward, the angle is increased. When the seat part 11 is moved backwards, the angle is decreased.

[0049] Hence, the backrest 12 is pivotably connected to the seat part 10 such that a displacement of the seat part 11 relative to the base 10 causes a pivoting motion between the seat part 11 and the backrest 12.

[0050] Activating the motor drives 13 therefore causes a motion of the seat part 11 relative to the base 10, a motion of the seat part 11 relative to the backrest 12 and a motion of the backrest 12 relative to the base 10.

[0051] At an end of each of the guides 110, a respective end stop 112 is formed. The end stops 112 are each formed as a shoulder. When the corresponding pinion 130 contacts the end stop 112, linear adjustment of the seat part 11 relative to the base 10 is stopped. However, when the pinion 130 continues to rotate, it presses against the end stop 112 and thereby transfers a torque into the respective left or right support 116, 117. At this position, the guide elements 113 are located at the end of the first section S1 and at the beginning of the second section S2 of the respective guide path 100, so the guide elements 113 allow the seat part 11 to be rotated upwards by travelling along the curved second section S2.

[0052] Turning now to Fig. 6, one of the motor drives 13 is shown. The motor drives 13 can be formed identical or mirrored. Each of the motor drives 13 comprises a motor 131 driving the pinion 130 via a gearbox 132. The pin 133 is arranged on a side of the pinion 130 facing away from the gearbox 132.

[0053] Figs. 7A to 7C illustrate the adjustment of the vehicle seat 1A.

[0054] Fig. 7A shows the vehicle seat 1A in the first position P1. The seat part 11 is arranged in a backwards position along the longitudinal axis X. The backrest 12 is arranged in a relatively upright position. In the first position P1 an angle A1 between the seat part 11 and the backrest 12 is between 90° and 180°.

[0055] Activating the motor drives 13 displaces the seat part 11 along the longitudinal axis X into the second position P2 as shown in Fig. 7B. In the second position P2, the angle between the seat part 11 and the backrest 12 is increased compared to the first position P1. The second position P2 allows a more relaxed seating. The backrest 12 is more reclined backwards compared to the first position P1.

[0056] During the displacement from the first position P1 to the second position P2, the height of the seat part 11 along a vertical axis Z is unchanged. The vertical axis Z is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis X and to the lateral axis. The longitudinal axis X is arranged with an angle to the backrest plane BP. This angle is larger than an angle of the backrest plane BP to the vertical axis Z.

[0057] The seat part 11 is pivotably adjustable relative to the base 10 between the second position P2 and the third position P3.

[0058] Fig. 7C shows the third position P3, after further activation of the motor drives 13 caused a rotation of the seat part 11 towards the backrest 12. In the third position P3 the angle A2 between the seat part 11 and the backrest 12 is below 90°.

[0059] During the adjustment from the first position P1 to the second position P2 to the third position P3, the guide elements 120 of the backrest 12 travel along the guiding means 14.

[0060] In the third position P3, the seat part 11 is flipped upwards close to the backrest 12. In the third position P3, the guide elements 113 are arranged at respective ends of the guide paths 100 in the second sections S2.

[0061] Figs. 8A-8C show a vehicle seat 1 B with a similar construction as described above, so reference is made to the description above.

[0062] In contrast to the vehicle seat 1A of Figs. 1-7C, the backrest 12 of vehicle seat 1 B is fixedly connected to the base 10 by means of a fixture 123.

[0063] The adjustment of the seat part 11 is identically as described above with reference to Figs. 1-7C, but the backrest 12 maintains its positions irrespective of the position of the seat part 11.

[0064] Hence, the backrest 12 is supported on the base 10, and the motor drives 13 are configured for adjusting the seat part 11 relative to the base 10 and relative to the backrest 12, wherein  the pinions 130 of the motor drives 13 are configured to travel along a guide 110 of the seat part 11 as described above.

[0065] Notably, the vehicle seat 1A or the vehicle seat 1 B may alternatively be provided without the second sections S2 of the guide paths 100. Then, the third position P3 would not be possible and the vehicle seat would only allow an adjustment between the first and second positions P1, P2.
