Description
[0001] LABEL APPLICATOR PAD, LABELLING UNIT AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING A
[0002] LABEL APPLICATOR PAD
[0003] TECHNICAL FIELD
[0004] The present disclosure relates to a label applicator pad configured for transporting a label from a label feeding device to an object and applying the label to the object. The disclosure further relates to a labelling unit and methods for producing a label applicator pad.
[0005] BACKGROUND
[0006] Label applicator pads are commonly used for carrying or transporting labels from a printing or feeding unit to objects. A negative air pressure at a label holding surface of the label applicator pads may be used for holding the labels in connection to the label applicator pads during transportation to the objects. A common issue with conventional label applicator pads are that they are less favourable when applying the labels to irregular or non-planar object surfaces, due to the surface configuration of the label holding surface. There is thus a need for an improved label applicator pad that efficiently applies the labels to irregular or non-planar surfaces.
[0007] SUMMARY
[0008] An object of the present disclosure is to provide a label applicator pad, a labelling unit and methods for producing a label applicator pad, where the previously mentioned problems are avoided. This object is at least partly achieved by the features of the independent claims. The dependent claims contain further developments of the label applicator pad.
[0009] The disclosure concerns a label applicator pad configured fortransporting a label from a label feeding device to an object and applying the label to the object. The label applicator pad comprises an ejector structure and a flexible deformation structure. The flexible deformation structure comprises a flexible label holding surface having one or more suction openings, and the flexible label holding surface is adapted for holding the label upon transportation from the label feeding device to the object. The label applicator pad further comprises one or more flexible suction channels arranged within the flexible deformation structure and connected to one or more corresponding suction openings. The one or more flexible suction channels are fluidly connecting the one or more suction openings to the ejector structure. The flexible deformation structure and the one or more flexible suction channels are configured for being compressed upon application of the label to the object, enabling deformation of the flexible label holding surface for adapting the flexible label holding surface to a surface shape of the object.
[0010] Advantages with these features are that the label applicator pad with the flexible deformation structure and the one or more flexible suction channels are enabling efficient application of labels not only to planar object surfaces, but also to irregular or non-planar object surfaces. The flexible label holding surface is adapted to the surface shape of the object through the deformation of the flexible deformation structure and the one or more flexible suction channels, and in this way the label applicator pad is adapting its shape to the object even if having complex surface shape configurations. The label applicator pad can thus be used for many different object surface shapes through the flexible configuration of the flexible deformation structure and the one or more flexible suction channels for efficient labelling operations.
[0011] In one embodiment, the one or more flexible suction channels have a flexible bellowslike configuration. The flexible bellows-like configuration is enabling deformation of the one or more flexible suction channels when the flexible deformation structure and the one or more flexible suction channels are being compressed upon application of the label to the object. Controlled deformations of the one or more flexible suction channels are desired for a maintained ability to guide a flow of air to the ejector structure from the one or more suction openings for a secure label holding ability of the label applicator pad. The bellows-like configuration is enabling an efficient flow of air even when being deformed.
[0012] In one embodiment, the ejector structure is adapted for being attached to a label transporting arrangement arranged for transporting the label applicator pad with the label from the label feeding device to the object. The label transporting arrangement may have any suitable configuration, such as a movably arranged elongated bar structure that is arranged for moving the label applicator pad towards and away from the objects to be labelled. Alternatively, the label transporting arrangement may be configured as one or more swinging arm structures to which the label applicator pad is attached.
[0013] In one embodiment, the ejector structure is adapted for being fluidly connected to an air pressure device arranged for establishing a negative air pressure at the one or more suction openings via the one or more of the flexible suction channels. The air pressure device may be of any suitable type, such as a compressor arrangement establishing the negative air pressure at the one or more suction openings. The ejector structure may comprise one or more integrated air ejector arrangements connected to the air pressure device, where the one or more air ejector arrangements are establishing the negative air pressure at the one or more suction openings via the one or more flexible suction channels for holding the label in connection to the label applicator pad when transporting the label from the label feeding device to the object. Alternatively, the air pressure device is configured as an air suction device and the negative air pressure may be directly established by the air pressure device, resulting in a suction force at the one or more suction openings via the one or more flexible suction channels for holding the label in connection to the label applicator pad when transporting the label from the label feeding device to the object.
[0014] In one embodiment, the ejector structure comprises one or more flow channels, where each flow channel is fluidly connected to one or more of the flexible suction channels. The flow channels are efficiently distributing a flow of air from the one or more suction openings into the ejector structure.
[0015] In one embodiment, the ejector structure and the flexible deformation structure with the one or more flexible suction channels are arranged as an integrated structure. In this embodiment, the integrated structure is thus constituted by the ejector structure and the flexible deformation structure with the one or more flexible suction channels, and the integrated structure is formed as a common structural element forming the label applicator pad.
[0016] In one embodiment, the integrated structure is arranged as a 3D printed structure. A 3D printing operation is enabling the forming of the integrated structure into the common structural element, where the ejector structure and the flexible deformation structure with the one or more flexible suction channels are 3D printed in a single printing operation. With the 3D printing operation, there is no need for assembling different parts or components for producing the integrated structure.
[0017] In one embodiment, the flexible deformation structure with the one or more flexible suction channels are arranged as an integrated structure that is attachable to the ejector structure. In this alternative embodiment, the integrated structure is thus constituted by the flexible deformation structure with the one or more flexible suction channels, and the integrated structure is formed as a common structural element. The label applicator pad is formed by attaching the integrated structure to the ejector structure in an assembling operation.
[0018] In one embodiment, the flexible deformation structure further comprises a connection structure configured for releasably connecting the integrated structure to the ejector structure. The ejector structure comprises one or more first attachment members and the connection structure comprises one or more second attachment members, where the one or more first attachment members are configured for engaging corresponding one or more second attachment members. Such a configuration is enabling removal of the integrated structure formed by the flexible deformation structure with the one or more flexible suction channels from the ejector structure, and the integrated structure is easily replaceable if worn out or damaged.
[0019] In one embodiment, one or more first attachment members of the ejector structure are arranged as one or more grooves and one or more second attachment members of the connection structure are arranged as one or more rails configured for slidingly engaging corresponding one or more grooves. As an alternative, or in combination, one or more second attachment members of the connection structure are arranged as one or more grooves and one or more first attachment members of the ejector structure are arranged as one or more rails configured for slidingly engaging corresponding one or more grooves. This configuration is enabling a simple operation when attaching the integrated structure to the ejector structure or removing the integrated structure from the ejector structure.
[0020] In one embodiment, the ejector structure comprises a first locking member and the connection structure comprises a second locking member. The first locking member and the second locking member are engaging each other when the integrated structure is attached to the ejector structure. The locking members are providing a secure connection between the integrated structure and the ejector structure for efficient label operations, with limited risk for unwanted removal of the integrated structure.
[0021] In one embodiment, the first locking member is arranged as one or more recessed sections in the ejector structure and the second locking member is arranged as one or more flexible protruding elements extending from the connection structure, where the one or more flexible protruding elements are engaging corresponding one or more recessed sections when the integrated structure is attached to the ejector structure.
[0022] In one embodiment, the one or more first attachment members of the ejector structure are arranged as one or more receiving structures and the one or more second attachment members of the connection structure are arranged as one or more protruding flexible snap fastening structures configured for engaging corresponding one or more receiving structures. This configuration is providing an alternative attachment structure for simple operation when attaching the integrated structure to the ejector structure or removing the integrated structure from the ejector structure.
[0023] In one embodiment, the integrated structure is arranged as a 3D printed structure. A 3D printing operation is enabling the forming of the integrated structure into the common structural element, where the flexible deformation structure with the one or more flexible suction channels is 3D printed in a single printing operation. With the 3D printing operation, there is no need for assembling different parts or components for producing the integrated structure.
[0024] In one embodiment, the flexible deformation structure comprises a flexible hollow three-dimensional lattice structure. The flexible hollow three-dimensional lattice structure may be arranged as a repeated pattern structure that fills a volume or space between the connection structure and the label holding surface, where the one or more flexible suction channels are embedded within the repeated pattern structure. Such repeated patterns structures may for example be inspired by nature and arranged as cellular materials that consist of beams, surfaces, or plates that fit together following an ordered or stochastic pattern. The flexible hollow three- dimensional lattice structure may have a configuration based on repeating unit cells composed of webs or trusses with octagonal, honeycomb, or random patterns, enabling a lightweight, flexible, and durable construction of the flexible deformation structure.
[0025] In one embodiment, the flexible hollow three-dimensional lattice structure is arranged as a 3D printed flexible structure. By 3D printing the flexible hollow three-dimensional lattice structure, complex shapes can efficiently be achieved.
[0026] In one embodiment, the flexible label holding surface is arranged as a continuous surface structure integrated in the deformation structure, where the continuous surface structure is surrounding the one or more suction openings.
[0027] The disclosure further concerns a labelling unit comprising a label applicator pad as described above.
[0028] The disclosure further concerns a method for producing a label applicator pad, where the label applicator pad is configured for transporting a label from a label feeding device to an object and applying the label to the object. The label applicator pad comprises an ejector structure and a flexible deformation structure, where the flexible deformation structure comprises a flexible label holding surface having one or more suction openings. The flexible label holding surface is adapted for holding the label upon transportation from the label feeding device to the object. The method comprises the steps: 3D printing the flexible deformation structure and the one or more flexible suction channels into an integrated structure, and 3D printing the ejector structure, wherein the integrated structure is attachable to the ejector structure for forming the label applicator pad.
[0029] Advantages with these features are that the label applicator pad can be efficiently produced by simple 3D printing operations. The label applicator pad with the flexible deformation structure and the one or more flexible suction channels are enabling efficient application of labels not only to planar object surfaces, but also to irregular or non-planar object surfaces. The flexible label holding surface is adapted to the surface shape of the object through the deformation of the flexible deformation structure and the one or more flexible suction channels, and in this way the label applicator pad is adapting its shape to the object even if having complex surface shape configurations. The 3D printing operation is enabling the forming of the integrated structure into a common structural element, where the flexible deformation structure and the one or more flexible suction channels may be 3D printed in a single printing operation. With the 3D printing operation, there is no need for assembling different parts or components for producing the integrated structure. By 3D printing the ejector structure, the ejector structure can be made in a different material suitable for holding the integrated structure.
[0030] The disclosure further concerns a method for producing a label applicator pad, where the label applicator pad is configured for transporting a label from a label feeding device to an object and applying the label to the object. The label applicator pad comprises an ejector structure and a flexible deformation structure, where the flexible deformation structure comprises a flexible label holding surface having one or more suction openings. The flexible label holding surface is adapted for holding the label upon transportation from the label feeding device to the object. The method comprises the steps: 3D printing the ejector structure, the flexible deformation structure and the one or more flexible suction channels into an integrated structure, wherein the integrated structure is forming the label applicator pad.
[0031] Advantages with these features are that the label applicator pad can be efficiently produced in a simple 3D printing operation. The 3D printing operation is enabling the forming of the integrated structure into a common structural element, where the ejector structure, the flexible deformation structure, and the one or more flexible suction channels may be 3D printed in a single printing operation. With the 3D printing operation, there is no need for assembling different parts or components for producing the integrated structure.

[0039] DESCRIPTION OF EXAMPLE EMBODIMENTS
[0040] Various aspects of the disclosure will hereinafter be described in conjunction with the appended drawings to illustrate and not to limit the disclosure, wherein like designations denote like elements, and variations of the described aspects are not restricted to the specifically shown embodiments, but are applicable on other variations of the disclosure.
[0041] Figures 1 and 2 schematically show an exemplified labelling system with a labelling unit II for printing and applying labels L to a flow of objects O. The labelling system comprises the labelling unit II, an object transporting device DOT, an object detection sensor SOD, and a control unit C. The labelling unit II comprises a label printing unit ULP for printing the labels L to be applied to the objects O, a feeding device F, a label applicator pad 1 , and a label transporting arrangement T for transporting the label applicator pad 1 with a label L from the feeding device F to an object O.
[0042] The objects O could be any types of products or goods that should be labelled or marked and typically, the objects O are in the form of boxes or other types of products that are transported on the object transporting device DOT. In the shown embodiment, the objects O are arranged as individual products with an outer object surface So having a rounded surface shape S, and the labels L are applied to the outer object surface So of the object O by means of the label applicator pad 1 attached to the label transporting arrangement T. The label transporting arrangement T is arranged for transporting the label applicator pad 1 with the label L from the label feeding device F arranged at the label printing unit ULP to the object O. The label feeding device F may be arranged with feeding rollers, feeding belts, or similar arrangements for feeding the labels L from the label printing unit ULP to the label applicator pad 1. The label applicator pad 1 is designed for applying labels onto objects O having any type of outer object surface So with regular or irregular surface shapes S. More specifically, the label applicator pad 1 attached to the label transporting arrangement T is used for transporting the label L from the label feeding device F to the object O, and the label applicator pad 1 is further used for applying the label L to the object O by pressing the label L towards the outer object surface So. In this way, the label applicator pad 1 with the label L is transported by the label transporting arrangement T from the label feeding device F to the outer object surface So of the object O.
[0043] The labels L could be of any suitable type, and as described above, the labels L applied to the objects O are printed in the label printing unit ULP of the labelling unit II. Often self-adhesive labels are used, where the labels in a conventional way are provided with an adhesive layer on one side and carried by a paper web or similar backing structure that is holding the labels spaced apart. Suitably, the labels L are transported by the label applicator pad 1 with the adhesive layer facing away from the label applicator pad 1. In this way, the adhesive layer is positioned towards the object O, and by pressing the label L towards the outer object surface So, the label L is efficiently applied to the object O. In other embodiments, liner-less labels without backing structure may be used.
[0044] The control unit C is connected with suitable means to necessary parts and components of the system, such as for example the labelling unit II, the object transporting device DOT, and the object detection sensor SOD. The control unit C is suitably controlling the system and all operations performed by the system.
[0045] In the embodiment shown in figure 1 , the object transporting device DOT is transporting a flow of individual objects O to the labelling unit II in an object transporting direction DT. A flow of objects may for example include a flow of two or more objects O that are transported after each other on the object transporting device DOT in the object transporting direction DT. The flow of objects may be a random flow, where distances between the two or more objects may be varying depending on when the objects are positioned or placed on the object transporting device DOT. It is common when labelling objects O that the distance between two objects O that are transported to the labelling unit II is not exactly the same and many times the distance between two objects may vary to a high degree. This distance may for example depend on when the objects are placed on the object transporting device DOT. It is common that the objects O are transported to the labelling system from another transporting arrangement or alternatively placed manually on the object transporting device DOT. Alternatively, the flow of objects is a regular flow, where distances between the two or more objects are pre-determined and the objects are positioned or placed on the object transporting device DOT in a pre-determined sequence.
[0046] The object transporting device DOT may be any suitable transporting device for transporting the individual objects O to the labelling unit II in the object transporting direction DT. In the embodiment shown figure 1 , the object transporting device DOT is a conventional conveyor belt that is driven by a suitable drive unit. The drive unit may for example be an electric motor, and the type of electric motor can be chosen to fit the specific design of the conveyor belt. In the shown embodiment, the object transporting direction DT is a direction along the conveyor belt as indicated in the figure.
[0047] In other non-illustrated embodiments, the object transporting device DOT may instead be arranged as an industrial robot with robot arms that are transporting the objects O to the labelling unit II.
[0048] The object detection sensor SOD is suitably arranged upstream the labelling unit II, and the object detection sensor SOD is detecting a position of the objects O when they are transported past the object detection sensor SOD towards the labelling unit II, as understood from figure 1 . The object detection sensor SOD may be any suitable type of sensor used for detecting objects that are moving on a transporting device, such as for example an optical sensor, a magnetic sensor, an ultrasonic sensor, a photoelectric sensor, a capacitive sensor, an inductive sensor, a pneumatic sensor, an electro-mechanical sensor, or a combination of different sensors. The type of sensor used may vary depending on the type of objects O being transported on the object transporting device DOT. When a position of an object O is detected by the object detection sensor SOD, a signal is sent to the control unit C, indicating that an object is being transported past the object detecting sensor SOD in the object transporting direction DT. Depending on the type of objects O being transported, the object detection sensor SOD may be calibrated to detect a specific point on the objects, such as a leading edge, a trailing edge, or another suitable point, line, side, edge or area on the objects O. The objects O that are passing the labelling unit II may vary in size and therefore the position of the labelling unit II may be altered depending on the size of the objects O. The object transporting device DOT is in the embodiment shown in figure 1 arranged in a position below the labelling unit II and to achieve a correct labelling position PL of the labelling unit II in relation to the objects O, the labelling unit II may be adjustable. The correct labelling position PL is a position suitable for the application of labels L onto the objects O, and may vary depending on the type of objects O. The labelling position PL can be manually determined by a system operator or alternatively by a suitable sensor unit connected to the labelling unit II. The labelling unit II may for example be attached to a movable stand that is used for repositioning the labelling unit II.
[0049] The labels L may be transported to and attached to the objects O in a suitable labelling position PL by means of the label transporting arrangement T with the label applicator pad 1 when the objects are moving past the labelling unit II, or alternatively the objects O are stopped in a suitable labelling position PL. The label transporting arrangement T may have any suitable configuration, such as a movably arranged elongated bar structure that is arranged for moving the label applicator pad 1 towards and away from the objects O to be labelled, as indicated with the double arrow in figure 1. Alternatively, the label transporting arrangement T may be configured as one or more swinging arm structures to which the label applicator pad 1 is attached.
[0050] As described above, the label applicator pad 1 is used for transporting the label L from the label feeding device F to the object O and applying the label L to the object O. The label applicator pad 1 comprises an ejector structure 3 and a flexible deformation structure 4. The flexible deformation structure 4 comprises a flexible label holding surface 2a having one or more suction openings 2b, and the flexible label holding surface 2a is adapted for holding the label L upon transportation from the label feeding device F to the object O.
[0051] The label applicator pad 1 further comprises one or more flexible suction channels 5 arranged within the flexible deformation structure 4 and connected to one or more corresponding suction openings 2b. The one or more flexible suction channels 5 are fluidly connecting the one or more suction openings 2b to the ejector structure 3. The ejector structure 3 may be arranged with one or more flow channels 3a, where each flow channel 3a is fluidly connected to one or more flexible suction channels 5. The flexible label holding surface 2a is suitably arranged as a continuous surface structure 2c integrated in the deformation structure 4, as shown in figure 2, where the continuous surface structure 2c is surrounding the one or more suction openings 2b.
[0052] The flexible deformation structure 4 and the one or more flexible suction channels 5 are configured for being compressed upon application of the label L to the object O, enabling deformation of the flexible label holding surface 2a for adapting the flexible label holding surface 2a to a surface shape S of the object O, as will be further described below.
[0053] With flexible is in this context meant that the flexible deformation structure 4 is arranged as a structure that is capable of being flexed and deformed without breaking during repeated deformation cycles. The degree of flexibility may vary throughout the flexible deformation structure 4 and the one or more flexible suction channels 5. The flexible construction of the flexible deformation structure 4 and the one or more flexible suction channels 5 is allowing deformation of the flexible deformation structure 4 and the one or more flexible suction channels 5 for adapting the flexible label holding surface 2a to the surface shape S of the object O. The adaptation of the flexible label holding surface 2a to the surface shape S of the object O is securing efficient application of the label L to the object O. The flexible deformation structure 4 and the one or more flexible suction channels 5 may be made of any material suitable for being flexed and deformed without breaking during repeated deformation cycles. The flexible deformation structure 4 may have any suitable configuration, such as for example homogeneous uniform structures, cellular structures or hollow structures.
[0054] The ejector structure 3 is fluidly connected to an air pressure device A, as indicated in figure 1. The air pressure device A is establishing a negative air pressure PNEG at the one or more suction openings 2b of the label applicator pad 1 , for holding the label L in connection to the label applicator pad 1 when transporting the label L from the label feeding device F to the outer object surface So of the object O.
[0055] A schematic embodiment of a label applicator pad 1 is shown in an exploded view in figure 2, where the label applicator pad 1 comprises an ejector structure 3, a flexible deformation structure 4, and two flexible suction channels 5 arranged within the flexible deformation structure 4. The flexible deformation structure 4 comprises a flexible label holding surface 2a, a deformation element 4DE, and a connection structure 4a. The connection structure 4a is configured as a surface structure of the flexible deformation structure 4 arranged opposite the label holding surface 2a. In this way, the deformation element 4DE and the flexible suction channels 5 are extending between the connection structure 4a and the label holding surface 2a. The flexible deformation structure 4 and the flexible suction channels 5 are configured for being compressed when applying the label L to the object O, and the flexible label holding surface 2a is deformed for adapting the flexible label holding surface 2a to the surface shape S of the object O.
[0056] In the embodiment shown in figure 2, the deformation element 4DE is schematically indicated with dotted lines for illustrative purposes. The deformation element 4DE is extending between the connection structure 4a and the label holding surface 2a, and as understood from the figure, the flexible suction channels 5 are embedded within the structure of the deformation element 4DE. In this way, the flexible suction channels 5 are structurally integrated in the flexible deformation structure 4. The deformation element 4DE may be made of any suitable flexible material, and arranged as a homogeneous or non-homogeneous structure extending between the connection structure 4a and the label holding surface 2a. Suitably, the flexible deformation structure 4 and the flexible suction channels 5 are forming a common structural element arranged as an integrated structure SINT.
[0057] The flexible label holding surface 2a is arranged with two suction openings 2b, as shown in figure 2, and the flexible suction channels 5 are connected to corresponding suction openings 2b for establishing fluid connections between the two suction openings 2b and the ejector structure 3 via the two flexible suction channels 5.
[0058] The ejector structure 3 is adapted for being attached to a suitable label transporting arrangement T for transporting the label applicator pad 1 with the label L from the label feeding device F to the object O. The integrated structure SINT is arranged for being removably attached to the ejector structure 3, enabling replacement of the integrated structure SINT if worn out or damaged. The connection structure 4a is configured for releasably connecting the integrated structure SINT to the ejector structure 3.
[0059] The ejector structure 3 is fluidly connected to an air pressure device A, as indicated in figure 1. The air pressure device A is establishing a negative air pressure PNEG at the suction openings 2b via the flexible suction channels 5 and the ejector structure 3.
[0060] To connect the flexible deformation structure 4 with the flexible suction channels 5 to the ejector structure 3, the connection structure 4a is configured for releasably connecting the integrated structure SINT to the ejector structure 3. The ejector structure 3 comprises one or more first attachment members 3b and the connection structure 4a comprises one or more second attachment members 4b. The one or more first attachment members 3b and corresponding one or more second attachment members 4b are configured for engaging each other. The ejector structure 3 further comprises a first locking member 3c, and the connection structure 4a comprises a second locking member 4c. The first locking member 3c and the second locking member 4c are engaging each other when the integrated structure SINT is attached to the ejector structure 3.
[0061] An embodiment of the label applicator pad 1 is illustrated more in detail in figures 3a- d. In this embodiment, the label applicator pad 1 comprises an ejector structure 3 and a flexible deformation structure 4. The ejector structure 3 is adapted for being attached to a suitable label transporting arrangement T, such as the label transporting arrangements T described above. The label transporting arrangement T is transporting the label applicator pad 1 with the label L from a label feeding device F to the object O.
[0062] The flexible deformation structure 4 comprises a flexible label holding surface 2a, a deformation element 4DE, and a connection structure 4a. The connection structure 4a is configured as a surface structure of the flexible deformation structure 4 arranged opposite the label holding surface 2a. The deformation element 4DE and the flexible suction channels 5 are extending between the connection structure 4a and the label holding surface 2a. The flexible deformation structure 4 and the flexible suction channels 5 are configured for being compressed when applying the label L to the object O, and the flexible label holding surface 2a is deformed for adapting the flexible label holding surface 2a to the surface shape S of the object O.
[0063] The flexible label holding surface 2a is holding the label L when the label L is transported or moved from the label feeding device F to the object O. The flexible label holding surface 2a is arranged with a first suction opening 2bi and a second suction opening 2b2. The label applicator pad 1 comprises a first flexible suction channel 5i connected to the first suction opening 2bi, and a second flexible suction channel 52 connected to the second suction opening 2b2. The first flexible suction channel 5i and the second flexible suction channel 52 are each arranged within the flexible deformation structure 4, as understood from for example figures 3a-b. In the shown embodiment, the first flexible suction channel 5i and the second flexible suction channel 52 are embedded in the flexible deformation structure 4. Suitably, the first flexible suction channel 5i and the second flexible suction channel 52 are integrated in the flexible deformation structure 4, and the first flexible suction channel 5i and the second flexible suction channel 52 together with the flexible deformation structure 4 are forming a common structural element arranged as an integrated structure SINT.
[0064] The flexible label holding surface 2a is suitably arranged as a continuous surface structure 2c integrated in the deformation structure 4, where the continuous surface structure 2c is surrounding the first suction opening 2bi and the second suction opening 2b2.
[0065] The deformation element 4DE is extending between the connection structure 4a and the label holding surface 2a, as understood from figures 3a-d, and the first flexible suction channel 5i and the second flexible suction channel 52 are embedded within the structure of the deformation element 4DE. In this way, the flexible suction channels 5 are structurally integrated in the flexible deformation structure 4, and the flexible deformation structure 4 and the flexible suction channels 5 are forming the integrated structure SINT.
[0066] The first flexible suction channel 5i is fluidly connecting the first suction opening 2bi to the ejector structure 3. The second flexible suction channel 52 is fluidly connecting the second suction opening 2b2 to the ejector structure 3. The flexible deformation structure 4, the first flexible suction channel 5i, and the second flexible suction channel 52, are configured for being compressed upon application of the label L to the object O. This compression is enabling deformation of the flexible label holding surface 2a for adapting the flexible label holding surface 2a to a surface shape S of the object O. In the embodiment shown in figures 3a-d, the first flexible suction channel 5i and the second flexible suction channel 52 have a flexible bellows-like configuration. The flexible bellows-like configuration is enabling deformation of the first flexible suction channel 5i and the second flexible suction channel 52 when the flexible deformation structure 4 together with the first flexible suction channel 5i and the second flexible suction channel 52 are compressed upon application of the label L to the object O, as will be further described below. Controlled deformations of the first flexible suction channel 5i and the second flexible suction channel 52 respectively are desired for a maintained ability to guide a flow of air AF to the ejector structure 3 from each of the first suction opening 2bi and second suction opening 2b2, as shown in figure 3b.
[0067] The flexible deformation structure 4 in the embodiment illustrated in figures 3a-d is made of a hollow flexible material structure. More specifically, the flexible deformation structure 4 comprises a flexible hollow three-dimensional lattice structure X arranged as the deformation element 4DE extending between the connection structure 4a and the label holding surface 2a. The flexible hollow three-dimensional lattice structure X is suitably arranged as a 3D printed flexible structure. The flexible hollow three- dimensional lattice structure X may be 3D printed from a flexible material, such as elastomeric materials well-suited for elastomeric lattices where high resiliency is needed, and the deformation element 4DE, the connection structure 4a, and the label holding surface 2a, may together with the first flexible suction channel 5i and the second flexible suction channel 52 be 3D printed into the integrated structure SINT. Suitable materials for the deformation element 4DE are for example thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), or elastomeric polyurethane EPU 41 by Carbon, Inc., having high elasticity, tear resistance, and cycle fatigue resistance.
[0068] A 3D printing operation is thus enabling the forming of the integrated structure SINT including the flexible deformation structure 4, the first flexible suction channel 5i , and the second flexible suction channel 52, without the need for assembling different parts.
[0069] Suitably, the flexible hollow three-dimensional lattice structure X is arranged as a repeated pattern structure that fills a volume or space between the connection structure 4a, and the label holding surface 2a, where the first flexible suction channel 5i and the second flexible suction channel 52 are embedded within the repeated pattern structure, as understood from figures 3a-d. Such repeated patterns structures may for example be inspired by nature and arranged as cellular materials that consist of beams, surfaces, or plates that fit together following an ordered or stochastic pattern. The flexible hollow three-dimensional lattice structure X may have a configuration based on repeating unit cells composed of webs or trusses with octagonal, honeycomb, or random patterns, enabling a lightweight, flexible, and durable construction of the flexible deformation structure 4. One example of a lattice structure that may be used is a Voronoi lattice structure.
[0070] The ejector structure 3 may be 3D printed from a suitable material, such as epoxybased engineering materials or thermoplastic materials. Suitably the ejector structure 3 is made of a stiffer material compared to the flexible integrated structure SINT. A 3D printing operation is thus enabling efficient forming of the ejector structure 3. Suitable materials for the ejector structure 3 are for example epoxy resin EPX 82 by Carbon Inc., or polyamide (PA), such as PA12 (nylon), having long-term durability and functional toughness.
[0071] The ejector structure 3 is adapted for being fluidly connected to an air pressure device A, as indicated in figure 1. The air pressure device A is arranged for establishing a negative air pressure PNEG at the first suction opening 2bi and at the second suction opening 2b2.
[0072] In the embodiment illustrated in figures 3a-d, the ejector structure 3 is arranged with one flow channel 3a fluidly connected to the first flexible suction channel 5i and the second flexible suction channel 52. The ejector structure 3 is fluidly connected to the air pressure device A. The flow channel 3a comprises a flow outlet 3e for evacuation of air from the ejector structure 3. The flow outlet 3e may be configured as an air evacuation port for an air ejector arrangement, or alternatively as an air suction port connected to the air pressure device A if arranged as an air suction device, as will be further described below. The flow channel 3a further comprises a first branched flow channel section 3fi and a second branched flow channel section 3f2. As shown in figures 3b-d, the first flexible suction channel 5i is arranged with a first suction channel opening 5ai in the connection structure 4a, and second flexible suction channel 52 is arranged with a second suction channel opening 5a2 in the connection structure 4a. When the integrated structure SINT is attached to the ejector structure 3, the first suction channel opening 5ai is aligned with the first branched flow channel section 3fi , and the second suction channel opening 5ai is aligned with the second branched flow channel section 3fi . The air pressure device A may be of any suitable type, such as a compressor arrangement. The ejector structure 3 may comprise an integrated air ejector arrangement 3h in connection to the flow channel 3a, as schematically illustrated in for example figure 3b. The air ejector arrangement 3h is establishing the negative air pressure PNEG at the first suction opening 2bi and the second suction opening 2b2, via the first flexible suction channel 5i and the second flexible suction channel 52 respectively, for holding the label L in connection to the label applicator pad 1 when transporting the label L from the label feeding device F to the object O. The ejector structure 3 may then be arranged with an air inlet port 3g connected to the air pressure device A, and the air pressure device A is establishing a pressurised flow of air into the air inlet port 3g. The air entering the air inlet port 3g is directed internally within the ejector structure 3 to the integrated air ejector arrangement 3h and ejected through a flow outlet 3e fluidly connected to the air ejector arrangement 3h and the flow channel 3a, as understood from figure 3b. The air flowing from the air inlet port 3g via the integrated air ejector arrangement 3h to the flow outlet 3e is establishing a suction force at the suction openings 2b by a negative pressure established in the flow channel 3a by means of the air ejector arrangement 3h.
[0073] Alternatively, instead of using an air ejector arrangement, the air pressure device A is configured as an air suction device connected to the flow channel 3a, and the negative air pressure PNEG may be directly established by the air pressure device A, resulting in a suction force at the first suction opening 2bi and the second suction opening 2b2, via the first flexible suction channel 5i and the second flexible suction channel 52 respectively, for holding the label L in connection to the label applicator pad 1 when transporting the label L from the label feeding device F to the object O. Without the air ejector arrangement, the flow outlet 3e may be connected only to the flow channel 3a, and the air pressure device A may be connected to the flow outlet 3e for establishing a suction force at the first suction opening 2bi and the second suction opening 2b2, via the first flexible suction channel 5i and the second flexible suction channel 52, and the flow channel 3a.
[0074] The ejector structure 3 is suitably connected to the air pressure device A with a hose arrangement H, a pipe arrangement, or other suitable air guiding arrangement, for guiding a flow of air AF to the ejector structure 3 from the air pressure device A if the ejector structure is arranged with the air ejector arrangement, or for guiding a flow of air AF from the ejector structure 3 to the air pressure device A. Such air guiding arrangements include couplings, valves, or other components needed.
[0075] The negative air pressure PNEG at the first suction opening 2bi and the second suction opening 2b2, is enabled by the air pressure device A connected to the ejector structure 3, and a flow of air AF is established from the first suction opening 2bi and the second suction opening 2b2 via the first flexible suction channel 5i, the second flexible suction channel 52, and the flow channel 3a.
[0076] The negative air pressure PNEG enabled by the air pressure device A is in this way resulting in a suction force at the first suction opening 2bi via the first flexible suction channel 5i and at the second suction opening 2b2 via the second flexible suction channel 52 for holding the label L.
[0077] In the embodiment shown in figures 3a-d, the flexible deformation structure 4 with the first flexible suction channel 5i and the second flexible suction channel 52 are arranged as the integrated structure SINT that is attachable to the ejector structure 3. In this way, the flexible deformation structure 4 with the first flexible suction channel 5i and the second flexible suction channel 52 are forming a common structural part that is removably attached to the ejector structure 3. Such a configuration is enabling removal of the integrated structure SINT formed by the flexible deformation structure 4 with the first flexible suction channel 5i and the second flexible suction channel 52 from the ejector structure 3, and the integrated structure SINT is easily replaceable if worn out or damaged. Suitably, the integrated structure SINT is arranged as a 3D printed structure, as described above.
[0078] The connection structure 4a is configured for releasably connecting the integrated structure SINT to the ejector structure 3. The ejector structure 3 comprises one or more first attachment members 3b and the connection structure 4a comprises one or more second attachment members 4b, where the one or more first attachment members 3b and corresponding one or more second attachment members 4b are configured for engaging each other.
[0079] In the embodiment shown in figures 3a-d, the first attachment members 3b of the ejector structure 3 are arranged as two grooves 6a, and the second attachment members 4b of the connection structure 4a are arranged as two rails 6b. Each rail 6b is configured for slidingly engaging a corresponding groove 6a for a secure attachment of the integrated structure SINT to the ejector structure 3, as indicated with arrows in figure 3d. In this way, the integrated structure SINT can be attached to and removed from the ejector structure 3 by sliding movements.
[0080] It should be understood that in other non-illustrated embodiments, the second attachment members 4b of the connection structure 4a may instead be arranged as grooves 6a, and the first attachment members 3b of the ejector structure 3 are arranged as rails 6b configured for slidingly engaging corresponding grooves 6a.
[0081] The ejector structure 3 further comprises a first locking member 3c, and the connection structure 4a comprises a second locking member 4c. The first locking member 3c and the second locking member 4c are engaging each other when the integrated structure SINT is attached to the ejector structure 3. In the embodiment illustrated in figures 3a-d, the first locking member 3c is arranged as recessed sections 3d in the ejector structure 3, as shown in figure 2, and the second locking member 4c is arranged as flexible protruding elements 4d extending from the connection structure 4a. Each flexible protruding element 4d is engaging a corresponding recessed section 3d when the integrated structure SINT is attached to the ejector structure 3, for an efficient locking function of the connection structure 4a to the ejector structure 3. The flexible configuration of each flexible protruding element 4d is enabling simple attachment and removal of the integrated structure SINT to the ejector structure 3.
[0082] In an alternative embodiment of the label applicator pad 1 illustrated in figures 4a-b, the first attachment members 3b of the ejector structure 3 are arranged as receiving structures 7a, and the second attachment members 4b of the connection structure 4a are arranged as protruding flexible snap fastening structures 7b. Each of the protruding flexible snap fastening structures 7b is configured for engaging a corresponding receiving structure 7a for a secure attachment of the integrated structure SINT to the ejector structure 3. The receiving structures 7a may be arranged as openings in the ejector structure 3 that are capable of receiving the protruding flexible snap fastening structures 7b, and capable of holding the protruding flexible snap fastening structures 7b in position when snapped into the receiving structures 7a. In this way, the integrated structure SINT can be attached to and removed from the ejector structure 3 by snap action. Figures 5a-d are schematically illustrating the labelling system for printing and applying a label L to an object O. The object O is transported by the object transporting device DOT into a labelling position PL in connection to the labelling unit II. The label printing unit ULP has in the position shown in figure 5a printed a label L and the label feeding device F is feeding the label L to the flexible label holding surface 2a of the label applicator pad 1 . In figure 5b, the label L has been fed to the label holding surface 2a, and the label L is held in position by the negative air pressure PNEG established via the suction openings 2b. When the label is held in position by the negative air pressure PNEG established via the suction openings 2b, the label applicator pad 1 can be moved towards the object O by the label transporting arrangement T, as indicated with the arrow in figure 5b. The label transporting arrangement T may for example be driven by an electric motor or other suitable actuating arrangement. In figure 5c, the label applicator pad 1 with the label L has been transported to the object O by the label transporting arrangement T. The label transporting arrangement T is in this position pushing the label applicator pad 1 towards the object O for applying the label L onto the object O. When applying the label L to the object O by pushing the label applicator pad 1 with the label L towards the object O, the flexible deformation structure 4 and the flexible suction channels 5 are compressed. The compression of the flexible deformation structure 4 and the flexible suction channels 5 is enabling deformation of the flexible label holding surface 2a for adapting the flexible label holding surface 2a to the surface shape S of the object O. As understood from figure 5c, the flexible label holding surface 2a is through deformation of the integrated structure SINT following the contour of the surface shape S of the object O for an efficient label application operation. When the label L has been applied to the object O, the applicator pad 1 is transported away from the object O by the label transporting arrangement T, as shown in figure 5d, and the label applicator pad is then ready for receiving a new label L for a repeated labelling operation for a following object O.
[0083] A further alternative embodiment of the label applicator pad 1 is illustrated in figures 6a-b. In this embodiment, the label applicator pad 1 comprises an ejector structure 3 and a flexible deformation structure 4. The ejector structure 3 is adapted for being attached to a suitable label transporting arrangement T, such as the label transporting arrangements T described above. The label transporting arrangement T is transporting the label applicator pad 1 with the label L from a label feeding device F to the object O in the same way as described above. The label applicator pad 1 shown in figures 6a-b is suitable for transporting larger labels L, and has a configuration similar to the label applicator pad 1 described in connection to figures 3a-d.
[0084] The flexible deformation structure 4 comprises a flexible label holding surface 2a, a deformation element 4DE, and a connection structure 4a. The connection structure 4a is configured as a surface structure of the flexible deformation structure 4 arranged opposite the label holding surface 2a. The deformation element 4DE and flexible suction channels 5 are extending between the connection structure 4a and the label holding surface 2a. The flexible deformation structure 4 and the flexible suction channels 5 are configured for being compressed when applying the label L to the object O, and the flexible label holding surface 2a is deformed for adapting the flexible label holding surface 2a to the surface shape S of the object O.
[0085] In the embodiment shown in figures 6a-b, the flexible label holding surface 2a is arranged with a plurality of suction openings 2b. The label applicator pad 1 comprises a plurality of flexible suction channels 5 connected to corresponding suction openings 2b. The flexible suction channels 5 are arranged within the flexible deformation structure 4. In the shown embodiment, the flexible suction channels 5 are integrated in the flexible deformation structure 4, and the flexible suction channels 5 together with the flexible deformation structure 4 are forming a common structural element arranged as an integrated structure SINT. The flexible label holding surface 2a is suitably arranged as a continuous surface structure 2c integrated in the deformation structure 4, where the continuous surface structure 2c is surrounding the suction openings 2b.
[0086] The flexible suction channels 5 are fluidly connecting the corresponding suction openings 2b to the ejector structure 3. The flexible deformation structure 4 and the flexible suction channels 5 are configured for being compressed upon application of the label L to the object O. This compression is enabling deformation of the flexible label holding surface 2a for adapting the flexible label holding surface 2a to a surface shape S of the object O. The flexible suction channels 5 have a flexible bellows-like configuration as described above.
[0087] The flexible deformation structure 4 in the embodiment illustrated in figures 6a-b is made of a hollow flexible material structure. The flexible hollow three- dimensional lattice structure X may be 3D printed from a flexible material, such as elastomeric materials well-suited for elastomeric lattices where high resiliency is needed, and the deformation element 4DE, the connection structure 4a, and the label holding surface 2a, may together with the flexible suction channels 5 be 3D printed into the integrated structure SINT. Suitable materials for the deformation element 4DE are for example thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), or elastomeric polyurethane EPU 41 by Carbon, Inc., having high elasticity, tear resistance, and cycle fatigue resistance.
[0088] A 3D printing operation is thus enabling the forming of the integrated structure SINT including the flexible deformation structure 4 and the flexible suction channels 5, without the need for assembling different parts. Suitably, the flexible hollow three- dimensional lattice structure X may have the configurations described above in connection to figures 3a-d.
[0089] The ejector structure 3 may be 3D printed from a suitable material, such as epoxybased engineering materials or thermoplastic materials, and suitably the ejector structure 3 is made of a stiffer material compared to the flexible integrated structure SINT.
[0090] The ejector structure 3 is adapted for being fluidly connected to an air pressure device A, as indicated in figure 1. The air pressure device A is arranged for establishing a negative air pressure PNEG at the suction openings 2b via the flexible suction channels 5 and the ejector structure 3.
[0091] In the embodiment illustrated in figures 6a-b, the ejector structure 3 is arranged with three flow channels 3a, each fluidly connected to two flexible suction channels 5 in the same ways and with the same functions as described above. The ejector structure 3 is fluidly connected to the air pressure device A. Each flow channel 3a comprises a flow outlet 3e for evacuation of air from the ejector structure 3. Each flow outlet 3e may be configured as an air evacuation port for an air ejector arrangement, or alternatively as an air suction port connected to the air pressure device A if arranged as an air suction device, as will be further described below. A negative air pressure PNEG at the suction openings 2b via the flexible suction channels 5 is enabled by the air pressure device A, and a flow of air AF is established from the suction openings 2b to the air pressure device A via the flexible suction channels 5, and the flow channels 3a.
[0092] The negative air pressure PNEG enabled by the air pressure device A is in this way resulting in a suction force at the suction openings 2b for holding the label L.
[0093] The air pressure device A may be of any suitable type, such as a compressor arrangement. The ejector structure 3 may in this embodiment comprise non-illustrated integrated air ejector arrangements in connection to each flow channel 3a, in the same way as described above, where the air ejector arrangements are establishing the negative air pressure PNEG at the suction openings 2b via the flexible suction channels 5 for holding the label L in connection to the label applicator pad 1 when transporting the label L from the label feeding device F to the object O. The ejector structure 3 may then be arranged with an air inlet port 3g connected to the air pressure device A, and the air pressure device A is establishing a pressurised flow of air into the air inlet port 3g. The air entering the air inlet port 3g is directed internally within the ejector structure 3 to the integrated air ejector arrangements and ejected through respective flow outlets 3e fluidly connected to the the air ejector arrangements and the flow channels 3a. The air flowing from the air inlet port 3g via the integrated air ejector arrangements to the flow outlets 3e is establishing a suction force at the suction openings 2b by a negative pressure established in the flow channels 3a by means of the air ejector arrangements.
[0094] Alternatively, instead of using air ejector arrangements, the air pressure device A is configured as an air suction device connected to the flow channels 3a, and the negative air pressure PNEG may be directly established by the air pressure device A, resulting in a suction force at the suction openings 2b via the flexible suction channels 5 for holding the label L in connection to the label applicator pad 1 when transporting the label L from the label feeding device F to the object O. Without the air ejector arrangements, the flow outlets 3e may be connected only to the flow channels 3a, and the air pressure device A may be connected to the flow outlets 3e for establishing a suction force at the suction openings 2b.
[0095] In the embodiment shown in figures 6a-b, the flexible deformation structure 4 with the flexible suction channels 5 are arranged as the integrated structure SINT that is attachable to the ejector structure 3. In this way, the flexible deformation structure 4 with the flexible suction channels 5 are forming a common structural part that is removably attached to the ejector structure 3. Such a configuration is enabling removal of the integrated structure SINT from the ejector structure 3, and the integrated structure SINT is easily replaceable if worn out or damaged. Suitably, the integrated structure SINT is arranged as a 3D printed structure, as described above.
[0096] The connection structure 4a is configured for releasably connecting the integrated structure SINT to the ejector structure 3. The ejector structure 3 comprises a plurality of first attachment members 3b arranged as grooves, similar to the grooves described in connection to figures 3a-d. The connection structure 4a comprises a plurality of corresponding second attachment members 4b arranged as rails 6b. Each rail 6b is configured for slidingly engaging a corresponding groove 6a for a secure attachment of the integrated structure SINT to the ejector structure 3, and the integrated structure SINT can be attached to and removed from the ejector structure 3 by sliding movements.
[0097] It should be understood that in other non-illustrated embodiments, the second attachment members 4b of the connection structure 4a may instead be arranged as grooves 6a, and the first attachment members 3b of the ejector structure 3 are arranged as rails 6b configured for slidingly engaging corresponding grooves 6a. Alternatively, the attachment members may have a snap configuration as described above.
[0098] The ejector structure 3 further comprises a first locking member 3c, and the connection structure 4a comprises a second locking member 4c. The first locking member 3c and the second locking member 4c are engaging each other when the integrated structure SINT is attached to the ejector structure 3, with configurations as described above having recessed sections 3d and flexible protruding elements 4d. In the embodiments described above, the flexible deformation structure 4 with the one or more flexible suction channels 5 are arranged as an integrated structure SINT that is attachable to the ejector structure 3. In further alternative non-illustrated embodiments, the ejector structure 3 and the flexible deformation structure 4 with the one or more flexible suction channels 5 are arranged as an integrated structure SINT. In this way, the ejector structure 3 and the flexible deformation structure 4 with the one or more flexible suction channels 5 are forming a common structural element. Such an integrated structure SINT is suitably arranged as a 3D printed structure.
[0099] By 3D printing the integrated structure SINT in the different embodiments, complex flexible structures can be achieved in an efficient way. The integrated structure SINT may have any suitable configuration for establishing a desired deformation for adapting the flexible label holding surface 2a to the surface shape S of the object O when applying the label L.
[0100] The flexible deformation structure 4 in the different embodiments may have any suitable configuration and be made of flexible material structures, such as for example homogeneous uniform structures, cellular structures or hollow structures. The flexible deformation structure 4 may comprise a flexible hollow three-dimensional lattice structure X, as described above, where the flexible hollow three-dimensional lattice structure X is arranged as a 3D printed flexible structure. The flexible suction channels 5 may be 3D printed together with the flexible deformation structure 4 with the flexible hollow three-dimensional lattice structure X.
[0101] A 3D printing operation is thus enabling the forming of the integrated structure SINT including the flexible deformation structure 4 without the need for assembling different parts. Any suitable 3D printer may be used for the 3D printing operation.
[0102] In an embodiment, the label applicator pad 1 is produced by 3D printing the flexible deformation structure 4 and the one or more flexible suction channels 5 into an integrated structure SINT, and 3D printing the ejector structure 3. The integrated structure SINT is attachable to the ejector structure 3 for forming the label applicator pad 1 , as described in embodiments above.
[0103] In an alternative embodiment, the label applicator pad 1 is produced by 3D printing the ejector structure 3, the flexible deformation structure 4 and the one or more flexible suction channels 5 into an integrated structure SINT, where the integrated structure SINT is forming the label applicator pad 1.
