Abstract
Description
[0001] TITLE
[0002] MITIGATION OF CRACKS IN BUILDING MATERIALS
[0003] FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE
[0004] The present disclosure relates to building materials and mixtures thereof that aid in reducing or otherwise eliminating the presence and / or propagation of one or more cracks that may form within the building materials.
[0005] BACKGROUND OF THE DISCLOSURE
[0006] Various building materials, such as concrete materials, are known in the art. Currently, conventional concrete materials suffer from the formation and propagation of cracks that have a negative effect on the overall life and durability of the material. Typically, surface cracks are caused as a result of an amount of shrinkage that occurs within a concrete material from drying due to the fact that the surface of the material dries at a faster rate than the interior or core of the material. This shrinkage triggers various tensions and / or stressors within the concrete material that consequently leads to the formation of cracks within the material.
[0007] It would therefore be advantageous to develop building materials that reduce or otherwise eliminates the occurrence of cracks therein thereby improving the overall strength, life and durability of the building materials. Additionally, it would be advantageous to develop building materials that aid in slowing or otherwise preventing the propagation or growth of cracks within a building material thereby improving the overall strength, life and durability of the building material. Furthermore, it would be advantageous to develop building materials that have an improved overall thermal resistance, fire resistance and / or freeze-thaw resistance. [0043] DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0044] It is to be understood that the invention may assume various alternative orientations and step sequences, except where expressly specified to the contrary, it is also to be understood that the specific devices and processes illustrated in the attached drawings and described within the following specification are simply exemplary embodiments of the inventive concepts defined within the appended claims. Hence, the specific dimensions, directions, compositions, steps, processes and / or physical characteristics relating to the embodiments of the invention disclosed are not to be considered as limiting, unless the claims expressly state otherwise.
[0045] The present disclosure relates to one or more building materials 100 having an improved overall life and durability by providing a mixture or composition having one or more components that aid in reducing or otherwise preventing the formation or propagation of one or more cracks 104 within the one or more building materials 100.
[0046] It is within the scope of this disclosure and as a non-limiting example that the term building materials refers to materials such as cement, cement-based materials, pavers, concrete, bag concrete, mortar and / or other masonry materials. These types of building materials are substantially porous solids made from a combination of crystalline and gel-like phases with an interstitial pore solution that is in chemical equilibrium with the solid phase of the material. These building materials have a wide array of construction type applications due to the high compressive strength, energy efficiency and fire safety properties.
[0047] Additionally, it is within the scope of this disclosure and as a non-limiting example that the one or more building materials 100 may be used in admix type applications, ready mix type applications and / or pre-cast type applications. In admix type applications, the one or more components of the one or more building materials 100 will be incorporated within the final product at the manufacturing stage of the one or more building materials 100. In ready mix type applications, the one or more components are incorporated within the one or more building materials 100 within one or more mixing machines (not shown) on-site such as but not limited to a mixer and / or a mixing truck. As a non-limiting example, the one or more components of the one or more building materials 100 may be incorporated with a bag of concrete for subsequent mixing on-site with owe or more mixing machines (not shown). In pre-cast type applications, the one or more components are incorporated within the one or more building materials 100 and then the one or more building materials 100 are formed into a final product such as but not limited to walls, pavers, blocks, fake stone and / or other similar products.
[0048] Concrete consists of a mixture of cement, aggregate (gravel naturally washed or crushed, crushed stone and / or sand), water and / or various concrete additives. In the following text, the term aggregate will be used as a synonym for gravel, crushed stone and / or sand.
[0049] In accordance with the embodiment of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example where the one or more building materials 100 may be a concrete, mortar, pavers, bag concrete, masonry material, and / or other cement-based material, the one or more building materials 100 may include the use of a one or more cements. Cement is a binder that is used in building and / or construction materials in order to aid in setting, hardening, and / or adhering one or more materials together. Cements used within building and / or construction materials are typically inorganic, often lime or calcium silicate based, and characterized as hydraulic or non-hydraulic depending on the ability of the cement to set in the presence of an amount of water. It is within the scope of this disclosure and as a non-limiting example that the one or more cements described, illustrated and used in connection with the present disclosure may be a Type I, Type II, Type III and / or a Type IL. Type I cement is typically used in pavement, building foundations, bridges, floors and various pre-cast concrete type products or applications. As a non-limiting example, the Type I cement used in connection with the present disclosure may have a composition as set forth within TABLE 1 below.
[0050] TABLE 1
[0051] Type I Cement
[0052] Type III cement provides a higher early strength when compared to Type 1 cements. Like Type I cements, Type III cements may be used in pavement, building foundations, bridges, floors and various pre-cast concrete type products or applications. While the Type III cement composition is substantially similar to the composition of the Type I cement composition, see TABLE 2 below, the individual components or ingredients of the Type III cement are ground down or otherwise have a smaller overall particle size than those present within the Type I cements. This aids in reducing the amount of time needed to allow the one or more building materials 100 to set. As a result, the one or more building products 100 having an amount of the Type III cement therein will be able to use used or otherwise support an amount of weight in a shorter amount of time than the one or more building products 100 having an amount of the Type I cement therein. Additionally, the one or more building materials 100 having an amount of the Type III cement therein have an increased overall strength when compared to the one or more building materials 100 having an amount of the Type I cement therein. As a result, the one or more building materials 100 having an amount of the Type III cement therein may be used in applications where the one or more building materials 100 are subjected to higher forces when in use.
[0053] TABLE 2
[0054] Type III Cement Type IL cement is a type of cement composition that contains between approximately 5% and approximately 15% by weight limestone therein. Due in part to the increased limestone content of the Type IL cement, the Type IL cement typically results in approximately a 10% reduction in the overall carbon footprint of the one or more building materials 100 when compared to the one or more building materials 100 containing an amount of the Type I and Type III cements therein. Like with Type I and Type III cements, the Type IL cement may be used in pavement, building foundations, bridges, floors and various pre-cast concrete type products or applications. As a non-limiting example, the Type IL cement used in connection with the present disclosure may have a composition as set forth within TABLE 3 below. TABLE 3
[0055] As previously discussed herein, the one or more building materials 100 may include one or more components that aid in reducing or otherwise preventing the formation or propagation of the one or more cracks 104 within the one or more building materials 100. Typically, surface cracks are caused as a result of an amount of shrinkage that occurs within the one or more building materials 100 during the drying or curing process due to the fact that the surface of the one or more building materials 100 tend to dry or otherwise cure at a faster rate than the interior or the core of the one or more building materials. This shrinkage triggers various tensions and / or stressors within the one or more building materials 100 that consequently lead to the formation of and / or propagation of the one or more cracks 104 within the one or more building materials 100. By preventing the formation of, mitigating the formation of, mitigating the propagation of, and / or preventing the propagation of the one or more cracks 104 within the one or more building materials 100, the overall strength, life, durability, thermal resistance, fire resistance and / or freeze-thaw resistance of the one or more building materials 100 is able to be improved.
[0056] The one or more components aid in reducing or otherwise preventing the formation or propagation of one or more cracks 104 within the one or more building materials 100 by hydrophobing or hydrophobizing the nano-structure of the one or more building materials 100 and / or by mitigating or preventing an alkali silica reaction (hereinafter ASR) from occurring within the one or more building materials 100. By hydrophobing or hydrophobizing the nanostructure of the one or more building materials 100 it aids in inhibiting or otherwise reducing the overall amount of water that the one or more building materials 100 can absorb after the one or more building materials 100 have dried, hardened and / or cured. Additionally, by hydrophobing or hydrophobizing the nano-structure of the one or more building materials 100 it aids in reducing the overall amount of surface tension within the pore structure of the one or more building materials 100 thereby reducing or otherwise preventing the formation or propagation of one or more cracks 104 within the one or more building materials 100.
[0057] The term ASR refers to a destructive reaction that can occur under unfavorable conditions within the one or more building products 100 such as but not limited to concrete constructions and / or concrete products. The ASR reaction takes place especially when the parts of the concrete for example come into frequent contact with water and / or an aqueous salt solution. A gel arising from a reaction with OH ions is formed at the interface and in the interior (or pores) of the reactive aggregates (e.g. gravel or sand grains) present within the one or more building materials 100. When water intrudes, the gel then swells and occupies a larger volume than the original volume at the unreacted surface or in the interior of the aggregate. This expansion usually leads to for formation of and / or propagation of one or more cracks 104 within the one or more building materials 100 and later tends to lead to the destruction of all of a portion of the one or more building materials 100. A particularly critical swelling behavior is displayed by aggregates having either a high alkali content or a high content of amorphous microstructure constituents.
[0058] The expansion caused by the ASR can be measured by use of a suitable test setup. If this exceeds a certain value, the one or more building materials 100 are referred to as an ASR- sensitive material. If the one or mor building materials are used, for example, for the construction of roads or motorways, for traffic areas in airports, in tunnel construction, for pipes, for foundations, and / or in buildings, a tremendous amount damage can be caused by the alkali-silica reaction within the following 10 to 20 years, and this may in an extreme case even make complete replacement of the one or more building materials 100.
[0059] In principle, the ASR can thus be avoided by the choosing one or more components set forth herein that aid in preventing or otherwise mitigating the occurrence of the ASR within the one or more building materials 100. If the one or more components have a content of alkali metal ions and / or amorphous constituents of the structure which is too high, the one or more components count as reactive and therefore increase the overall risk of the ASR. It would therefore be advantageous that the one or more components chosen for use within the one or more building materials 100 aid in reducing the overall risk of the ASR.
[0060] According to an embodiment of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, the one or more components used within the one or more building materials 100 may be one or more silane materials, one or more siloxane materials, one or more silicate materials and / or one or more silicone materials.
[0061] In particular, it is within the scope of this disclosure and as a non-limiting example that the one or more components may be a First Resin Emulsion Composition (or “FRE”) and / or a Second Resin Emulsion Composition (or “SRE”). Detailed compositional information for First Resin Emulsion Composition can be found within TABLE 4 and detailed compositional information for Second Resin Emulsion Composition can be found within TABLE 5. TABLE 4
[0062] TABLE S According to an embodiment of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example that the one or more building materials 100 described and illustrated herein may include one or more reinforcing materials (not shown). While the one or more building materials 100 have a relatively high compressive strength, they also tend to have a lower tensile strength. The one or more one or more reinforcing materials (not shown) may be incorporated within at least a portion of the one or more building materials 100 and may or may not be completely encapsulated therein. By utilizing the one or more reinforcing materials (not shown) within the one or more building materials 100 it aids in increasing the overall tensile strength of the one or more building materials 100. This also aids in increasing the overall life and durability of the one or more building materials 100. It is within the scope of this disclosure and as a non-limiting example that the one or more reinforcing materials (not shown) may be rebar, bars, fibers, wires, meshes and / or cables.
[0063] Having generally described the various embodiments of the disclosure, a further understanding may be obtained by referencing certain specific examples which are provided herein for purposes of illustration only and are not intended to be limiting unless otherwise specified.

The Mixture 3 includes an amount of the Type 1 cement binder, slag, water and a plasticizer. The plasticizer was added at a ratio of 325ml / 100kg of the Type I cement binder added to the mixture.
[0070] As is can be seen by referencing FIG. 2 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, the Mixtures 1 , 2, and 3 prepared for lab scale testing were stored for a period of approximately one month to evaluate the amount of the one or more cracks 104 formed within the samples and the propagation thereof over time. As illustrated within FIG. 2 of the disclosure and as a nonlimiting example, the samples prepared according to the composition set forth within Table 6 for Mixtures 1 and Mixture 3 have noticeably more cracks present therein when compared to the one or more building materials 100 prepared according to Mixture 2.
[0071] In light of the foregoing, it is clear that the one or more components added to the one or more building materials 100 prepared in relation to Mixture 2 set forth within Table 6 in the form of the First Resin Emulsion Composition had a noticeable impact in preventing the formation of one or more cracks 104 within the one or more building materials 100. As a result, the one or more building materials 100 prepared in relation to Mixture 2 have an improved overall strength, life, durability, thermal resistance, fire resistance and / or freeze-thaw resistance as opposed to the samples prepared in relation to Mixture 1 and Mixture 3 of Table 6. The one or more building materials 100 made in connection with Mixture 5 set forth within Table 7 includes an amount of the Type 1 cement binder, slag, water, plasticizer and First Resin Emulsion Composition.
[0076] The Mixture 6 set forth within Table 7 is a test sample of the one or more building materials 100 prepared for evaluation and comparison. The one or more building materials 100 made in connection with Mixture 5 set forth within Table 7 includes an amount of the Type 1 cement binder, slag, water and First Resin Emulsion Composition. The primary difference between Mixture 6 and Mixture 5 is the absence of the plasticizer within Mixture 6 and the amount of First Resin Emulsion Composition used in Mixture 6 versus Mixture 5.
[0077] The Mixture 4, Mixture 5 and Mixture 6 prepared in accordance with Table 7 above were submerged in a water bath for a period of seven days. After seven days the Mixture 4, Mixture 5 and Mixture 6 were then removed from the water bath and allowed to dry in the lab. At this stage, neither the Mixture 4, Mixture 5 or the Mixture 6 prepared experienced any cracking. See FIG. 3 of the disclosure. However, the sample prepared in relation to Mixture 4 did experience more shrinkage than was experienced by Mixture 5 and Mixture 6. This shrinkage increases the overall amount of stress which then leads to the formation of one or more cracks 104 therein thereby leading to a reduced overall strength, life, durability, thermal resistance, fire resistance and / or freeze-thaw resistance when compared to Mixtures 5 and Mixtures 6.
[0078] The Mixture 4, Mixture 5 and Mixture 6 prepared in accordance with Table 7 above were then submerged in a water bath for a period of four days and then allowed to age for a period of thirty-five days to observe the formation and / or propagation of one or more cracks 104 therein. As it can be seen by referencing FIG. 4 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, the Mixture 4 without the one or more components therein in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition experienced an amount of cracking while the Mixture 5 and Mixture 6 having an amount of the one or more components there did not experience any cracking. As a result, the one or more building materials 100 prepared in relation to Mixture 5 and Mixture 6 have an improved overall strength, life, durability, thermal resistance, fire resistance and / or freeze-thaw resistance as opposed to the sample prepared in relation to Mixture 4 of Table 6.
[0079] The Mixture 4, Mixture 5 and Mixture 6 prepared in accordance with Table 7 above were then allowed to continue to age to observe the formation and / or propagation of one or more cracks 104 therein. The Mixture 4, Mixture 5 and Mixture 6 set forth within FIG. 5 of the disclosure is a snapshot of the presence of the one or more cracks 104 after being allowed to age for a period of thirty-eight days after being submerged in a water bath for four days. As it can be seen by referencing FIG. 5 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, the Mixture 4 without the one or more components therein in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition experienced an increased overall amount of cracking while the Mixture 5 and Mixture 6 having an amount of the one or more components there did not experience any cracking.
[0080] The Mixture 4, Mixture 5 and Mixture 6 prepared in accordance with Table 7 above were submerged in a water bath for a period of twenty-four hours and then allowed to age for a period of fifty-one days to observe the formation and / or propagation of one or more cracks 104 therein. As illustrated within FIG. 6 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, the Mixture 4 without the one or more components therein in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition experienced a significant amount of visible cracking in comparison to the Mixture 5 and Mixture 6 prepared. Additionally, as illustrated within FIG. 6 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, the Mixture 5 having the one or more components and an amount of plasticizer therein experienced a lesser degree of cracking compared to the Mixture 4 prepared. Furthermore, as illustrated within FIG. 6 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, the Mixture 6 of the one or more building materials 100 having one or more components and without an amount of the plasticizer therein as set forth within Table 7 did not experience any cracking.
[0081] In light of the foregoing, the one or more building materials 100 having the one or more components in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition therein (Mixture 5 and Mixture 6) experienced noticeably less cracking and therefore results in one or more building materials 100 having an increased overall strength, life, durability, thermal resistance, fire resistance and / or freeze-thaw resistance in comparison to building materials not having the one or more components therein (Mixture 4). Additionally, in light of the foregoing, it can be seen that the while the incorporation of the one or more components in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition within the one or more building materials 100 aided in inhibiting or otherwise mitigating the formation or propagation of the one or more cracks 104 within the one or more building materials 100, the incorporation of an amount of plasticizer within the one or more building materials 100 (Mixture 5) has a negative effect overall strength, life, durability, thermal resistance, fire resistance and / or freeze-thaw resistance of the one or more building materials 100.
[0082] FIG. 7 illustrates the Mixture 4, Mixture 5 and Mixture 6 prepared as set forth within Table 7 of the disclosure and allowed to age for a period of sixty-four days. As illustrated within FIG. 7 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, further cracks formed and propagated or otherwise extended by day sixty-four in both the Mixture 4 and the Mixture 5. In contrast, no cracks formed within the one or more building materials 100 prepared in relation to Mixture 6.
[0083] In light of the foregoing, the one or more building materials 100 having the one or more components in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition therein (Mixture 5 and Mixture 6) experienced noticeably less cracking and therefore results in one or more building materials 100 having an increased overall strength, life, durability, thermal resistance, fire resistance and / or freeze-thaw resistance in comparison to building materials not having the one or more components therein (Mixture 4). Additionally, in light of the foregoing, it can be seen that the while the incorporation of the one or more components in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition within the one or more building materials 100 aided in inhibiting or otherwise mitigating the formation or propagation of the one or more cracks 104 within the one or more building materials 100, the incorporation of an amount of plasticizer within the one or more building materials 100 has a negative effect overall strength, life, durability, thermal resistance, fire resistance and / or freeze-thaw resistance of the one or more building materials 100.
[0084] The Mixture 4, Mixture 5 and Mixture 6 prepared in accordance with Table 7 above were submerged in a water bath for a period of twenty-four days and then allowed to age for a period of eighty-six days to observe the formation and / or propagation of one or more cracks 104 therein. As illustrated within FIG. 8 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, the Mixture 4 without the one or more components therein in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition experienced a significant amount of visible cracking in comparison to the Mixture 5 and Mixture 6 prepared. Additionally, as illustrated within FIG. 8 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, the Mixture 5 having the one or more components and an amount of plasticizer therein experienced a lesser degree of cracking compared to the Mixture 4 prepared. Furthermore, as illustrated within FIG. 8 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, the Mixture 6 of the one or more building materials 100 having one or more components and without an amount of the plasticizer therein as set forth within Table 7 did not experience any cracking.
[0085] In light of the foregoing, the one or more building materials 100 having the one or more components in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition therein (Mixture 5 and Mixture 6) experienced significantly less cracking and therefore results in one or more building materials 100 having an increased overall strength, life, durability, thermal resistance, fire resistance and / or freeze-thaw resistance in comparison to building materials not having the one or more components therein (Mixture 4).
[0086] The Mixture 4, Mixture 5 and Mixture 6 prepared in accordance with Table 7 above were submerged in a water bath for a period of forty-eight days and then allowed to age for a period of one hundred and six days to observe the formation and / or propagation of one or more cracks 104 therein. As illustrated within FIG. 9 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, the Mixture 4 without the one or more components therein in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition experienced a significant amount of visible cracking in comparison to the Mixture 5 and Mixture 6 prepared. Additionally, as illustrated within FIG. 9 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, the Mixture 5 having the one or more components and an amount of plasticizer therein experienced a lesser degree of cracking compared to the Mixture 4 prepared. Furthermore, as illustrated within FIG. 9 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, the Mixture 6 of the one or more building materials 100 having one or more components and without an amount of the plasticizer therein as set forth within Table 7 did not experience any cracking.
[0087] In light of the foregoing, the one or more building materials 100 having the one or more components in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition therein (Mixture 5 and Mixture 6) experienced significantly less cracking and therefore results in one or more building materials
[0088] 100 having an increased overall strength, life, durability, thermal resistance, fire resistance and / or freeze-thaw resistance in comparison to building materials not having the one or more components therein (Mixture 4).
[0089] FIG. 10 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example provides samples made which were allowed to age for a period of one hundred and fifteen days. As set forth within FIG. 10 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, two of the samples were made with an amount of the one or more components therein while the third does not include the use of one or more components therein.
[0090] FIG. 11 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example provides an image of samples according to the compositions set forth within Table 7 for Mixture 4, Mixture 5 and Mixture 6 after being transported from one location to another. As it can be seen by referencing FIG. 11 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, upon being moved the Mixture 4 having significant cracking therein broke up into a number of smaller pieces. Additionally, as it can be seen by referencing FIG. 11 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, upon being moved the Mixture 5 having the one or more components therein and a plasticizer broke apart into multiple pieces as a result of the cracking the one or more building materials 100 experienced throughout the aging process. Furthermore, as it can be seen by referencing FIG. 11 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, upon being moved the Mixture 6 did not experience any cracking and / or fracturing as a result of being moved. In light of the foregoing, the one or more building materials 100 having the one or more components in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition therein (Mixture 5 and Mixture 6) experienced significantly less cracking and / or fracturing and therefore results in one or more building materials 100 having an increased overall strength, life, durability, thermal resistance, fire resistance and / or freeze-thaw resistance in comparison to building materials not having the one or more components therein (Mixture 4).
[0091] Example 3
[0092] Table 8 set forth below provides the ingredients and the amount of the ingredients with the mixtures prepared and tested according to an embodiment of the disclosure. As set forth within Table 8 below, CI means a Type I cement binder, S is slag, PLTC is a plasticizer and W / B is a water to cement binder ratio. The CI used was a Type 1 St. Mary’s cement binder, the slag was a Type 100 slag, and the plasticizer was an OptiFlo MR plasticizer. As illustrated within Table 8 below, the ratio of water to cement binder was kept constant across Mixture 7 and Mixture 8. Table 8
[0093] FIG. 12 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, provides a graphical illustration charting the overall percent shrinkage of the Mixture 7 and Mixture 8 prepared in accordance with Table 8 of the disclosure. As it can be seen by referencing FIG. 12 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, the Mixture 8 having an amount of the one or more components therein in for form of First Resin Emulsion Composition experienced a reduced overall amount of shrinkage when compared to the Mixture 7 prepared without the one or more components therein. As previously discussed, shrinkage triggers various tensions and / or stressors within the one or more building materials 100 that consequently lead to the formation of and / or propagation of the one or more cracks 104 within the one or more building materials 100. In light of the foregoing, the Mixture 8 prepared has a reduced overall amount of tensions and / or stressors therein which aids in reducing the occurrence of and / or propagation of the one or more cracks 104 within the one or more building materials 100. As a result, it can be determined that the one or more building materials 100 having the one or more components therein aid in improving the overall strength, life, durability, thermal resistance, fire resistance and / or freeze-thaw resistance of the one or more building materials 100. Example 4
[0094] Table 9 set forth below provides the ingredients and the amount of the ingredients with the mixtures prepared and tested according to an embodiment of the disclosure. As set forth within Table 9 below, CI means a Type I cement binder, S is slag, PLTC is a plasticizer and W / B is a water to cement binder ratio. The CI used was a Type 1 St. Mary’s cement binder, the slag was a Type 100 slag, and the plasticizer was an OptiFlo MR plasticizer. As illustrated within Table 9 below, the ratio of water to cement binder was kept constant across Mixture 9, Mixture 10 and Mixture 11. Table 9
[0095] FIG. 13 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, provides a graphical illustration charting the overall percent shrinkage of the Mixture 9, Mixture 10 and Mixture 11 prepared in accordance with Table 9 of the disclosure. As it can be seen by referencing FIG. 13 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, the Mixture 10 and Mixture 11 having an amount of the one or more components therein in for form of First Resin Emulsion Composition in general experienced a reduced overall amount of shrinkage when compared to the Mixture 9 prepared without the one or more components therein. Additionally, as is can be seen by referencing FIG.
[0096] 13 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example, the existence of the plasticizer within the mixture had a negative effect on the overall amount of shrinkage experienced. The Mixture 11 having the one or more components therein and without having a plasticizer therein experienced the least amount of overall shrinkage when compared to Mixture 9 and Mixture 10 prepared and tested.
[0097] As previously discussed, shrinkage triggers various tensions and / or stressors within the one or more building materials 100 that consequently lead to the formation of and / or propagation of the one or more cracks 104 within the one or more building materials 100. In light of the foregoing, the Mixture 10 and Mixture 11 prepared has a reduced overall amount of tensions and / or stressors therein which aids in reducing the occurrence of and / or propagation of the one or more cracks 104 within the one or more building materials 100. As a result, it can be determined that the one or more building materials 100 having the one or more components therein aid in improving the overall strength, life, durability, thermal resistance, fire resistance and / or freezethaw resistance of the one or more building materials 100.
[0098] In light of the foregoing, it can be determined that the addition of the one or more components within the one or more building materials 100 aid in decreasing the overall water content gradient throughout the structure of the one or more building materials 100. The one or more components are able to bridge the crack by means of a condensation reaction. As a result, of the testing performed, it was determined that the addition of the one or more components in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition are able to aid in mitigating or otherwise preventing the formation of and / or propagation of cracks within the one or more building materials 100. In fact it was determined that by utilizing the one or more components the one or more building materials 100 may be formulated without the use of a plasticizer which aids in providing one or more building materials 100 with improved overall strength, life, durability, thermal resistance, fire resistance and / or freeze-thaw resistance without having a significant increase in the overall cost and / or time associated with the manufacturing of the one or more building materials 100.
[0099] Example 4 Table 10 set forth below provides the ingredients and the amount of the ingredients with the mixtures prepared and tested according to an embodiment of the disclosure. As set forth within Table 10 below, CI means a Type I cement binder, S is slag, PLC means PhosphoLipase- C, PLTC is a plasticizer, W / B is a water to cement binder ratio and ConAir is Air-entertained. The CI used was a Type 1 Portland cement binder, the plasticizer was an OptiFlo MR plasticizer MR-325 ml / 100 KG cementitious material, and the siloxane is a First Resin Emulsion
[0100] Composition or a Second Resin Emulsion Composition. As illustrated within Table 10 below, the ratio of water to cement binder was kept constant across Mixture 12, Mixture 13, Mixture 14,
[0101] Mixture 15 and Mixture 16. Table 10 FIGs. 14 and 15 of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example provide an image of samples according to the compositions set forth within Table 10 for Mixture 12, Mixture 13, Mixture 14, Mixture 15 and Mixture 16 after being aged for a period of sixteen days. As it can be seen by referencing FIGs. 14 and 15 it can clearly be seen that the Mixture 12 experienced more cracking than the Mixtures 13, 14, 15 and 16 prepared having the one or more components therein in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition or Second Resin Emulsion Composition. In particular, as it can be seen by referencing FIGs. 14 and 15, the Mixtures 15 and 16 in accordance with Table 10 of the disclosure, the use of Second Resin Emulsion Composition as the one or more components experienced less cracking than the 13 and 14 using First Resin Emulsion Composition as the one or more components.
[0102] In light of the foregoing, the one or more building materials 100 having the one or more components in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition and Second Resin Emulsion Composition therein (Mixtures 13, 14, 15 and 16) experienced significantly less cracking and / or a propagation thereof and therefore results in one or more building materials 100 having an increased overall strength, life, durability, thermal resistance, fire resistance and / or freeze-thaw resistance in comparison to building materials not having the one or more components therein (Mixture 12). Additionally, in light of the foregoing, it can be seen that the while the incorporation of the one or more components in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition and Second Resin Emulsion Composition within the one or more building materials 100 aided in inhibiting or otherwise mitigating the formation or propagation of the one or more cracks 104 within the one or more building materials 100, the use of Second Resin Emulsion Composition as the one or more components experienced less cracking than the samples using First Resin Emulsion Composition as the one or more components. Table 11 below provides a Cracking Intensity value determined for a Mixture 17, Mixture
[0103] 18, Mixture 19, Mixture 20 and Mixture 21 prepared according to an embodiment of the disclosure and as a non-limiting example. Upon review of the results obtained, it is clear that the addition of the one or more components in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition within the one or more building materials 100 resulted in a reduced overall Cracking Intensity value for Mixtures 18, 19, 20 and 21 when compared to the Cracking Intensity value obtained from the control Mixture 17 prepared without the incorporation of the one or more components therein.
[0104] In light of the foregoing, it can be determined that the addition of the one or more components within the one or more building materials 100 aid in decreasing the overall water content gradient throughout the structure of the one or more building materials 100. The one or more components are able to bridge the crack by means of a condensation reaction. As a result, of the testing performed, it was determined that the addition of the one or more components in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition or Second Resin Emulsion Composition are able to aid in mitigating or otherwise preventing the formation of and / or propagation of cracks within the one or more building materials 100.
[0105] Additionally, in light of the foregoing, it can be determined that the use of one or more components in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition had an improved overall crack reduction or inhibition performance when used alone than when used at a lower percentage and with the plasticizer therein. Similarly, the use of one or more components in the form of First Resin Emulsion Composition had a reduced overall percent shrinkage when used alone than when used at a lower percentage and with the plasticizer therein.
