AI Technical Summary
Current mobile communication systems lack a procedure for a user equipment (UE) to indicate discontinuous coverage to the network during initial registration, leading to unavailability periods without proper handling.
The UE provides an indication of an unavailability period due to discontinuous coverage to the network, which determines and stores the start of this period, allowing the network to manage the UE's registration process accordingly.
This approach enables effective handling of unavailability periods during initial registration, ensuring seamless network connectivity and efficient resource management.

Abstract
Description
HANDLING START OF UNAVAILABILITY PERIOD DURING INITIAL REGISTRATION PROCEDURE IN MOBILE COMMUNICATIONSCROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED PATENT APPLICATION (S)
[0001] The present disclosure claims the priority benefit of Indian Patent Application No. 202421010669, filed 15 February 2024, the content of which herein being incorporated by reference in its entirety.TECHNICAL FIELD
[0002] The present disclosure is generally related to mobile communications and, more particularly, to handling the start of an unavailability period during an initial registration procedure in mobile communications.BACKGROUND
[0003] In wireless communications such as mobile communications under the current 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) specification, if a user equipment (UE) and a network support an unavailability period and an event is triggered in the UE, making the UE unavailable for a certain period of time, the UE may store its 5th Generation Mobility Management (5GMM) and 5th Generation Session Management (5GSM) context in a universal subscriber identity module (USIM) or non-volatile memory so as to be able to reuse it after the unavailability period. To activate the unavailability period, the UE provides an unavailability period duration during a registration procedure or during a de-registration procedure (see 3GPP Technical Specification (TS) 23.501 and 3GPP TS 23.502) . The support for the unavailability period is negotiated in the registration procedure. If the UE provided an unavailability period duration in the last registration procedure or de-registration procedure, the Access &Mobility Management Function (AMF) of the network would consider the UE unreachable until the UE re-registers for a normal service without providing an unavailability period duration. During the registration procedure, the AMF may determine the value of the periodic registration update timer (T3512) provided to the UE based on the unavailability period duration. The AMF releases the N1 signaling connection after the completion of the registration procedure in which the UE provided an unavailability period duration.
[0004] However, when the UE is powered on or in a deregistered state and able to determine a discontinuous coverage during which the UE is to lose satellite coverage, then there is no procedure for the UE to indicate to the network, and for the network to indicate to the UE, about the upcoming discontinuous coverage and perform registration procedure afterwards. Therefore, there is a need for solutions of handling the start of an unavailability period during an initial registration procedure in mobile communications.SUMMARY

In the description below, details of well-known features and techniques may be omitted to avoid unnecessarily obscuring the presented embodiments and implementations. Overview
[0016] Implementations in accordance with the present disclosure relate to various techniques, methods, schemes and / or solutions pertaining to handling the start of an unavailability period during an initial registration procedure in mobile communications. According to the present disclosure, a number of possible solutions may be implemented separately or jointly. That is, although these possible solutions may be described below separately, two or more of these possible solutions may be implemented in one combination or another.
[0017] FIG. 1 illustrates an example network environment 100 in which various solutions and schemes in accordance with the present disclosure may be implemented. FIG. 2 ~ FIG. 4 illustrate examples of implementation of various proposed schemes in network environment 100 in accordance with the present disclosure. The following description of various proposed schemes is provided with reference to FIG. 1 ~ FIG. 4.
[0018] Referring to FIG. 1, network environment 100 may involve a UE 110, such as a mobile device or smartphone, in wireless communication with a wireless network 120 as part of a communication network. The wireless network 120 may be a PLMN including 5G / NR domain and 4G / LTE domain. UE 110 may initially be in wireless communication with wireless network 120 via a base station or network node 125 (e.g., an eNB, gNB or transmit-receive point (TRP) ) . In network environment 100, UE 110 and the wireless network 120 may implement various schemes pertaining to handling the start of an unavailability period during an initial registration procedure in mobile communications in accordance with the present disclosure, as described herein.
[0019] It is noteworthy that, while the various proposed schemes may be individually or separately described below, in actual implementations some or all of the proposed schemes may be utilized or otherwise implemented jointly. Of course, each of the proposed schemes may be utilized or otherwise implemented individually or separately. Moreover, as used herein, a lower layer may refer to a layer in the 5GMM protocol stack that is lower than the radio resource control (RRC) layer, such as a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) layer, a radio control link (RLC) layer, a medium access control (MAC) layer, a physical (PHY) layer, or so forth.
[0020] Under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure, UE 110 may perform an initial registration procedure with wireless network 120 when one or more conditions exist (s) . Such condition (s) may include: (1) when UE 110, using a satellite next-generation radio access network (NG-RAN) access with a discontinuous coverage, determines that it is about to lose satellite coverage; and / or (2) when UE 110 needs to provide an unavailability period duration to wireless network 120; and / or (3) when UE 110 needs to provide a start of an unavailability period stamp; and / or (4) when UE 110 needs to provide unavailability information to wireless network 120.
[0021] Under the proposed scheme, UE 110 may set the coverage loss indication (CLI) bit to "Coverage loss due to discontinuous coverage" in the 5th Generation System (5GS) update type information element (IE) of a REGISTRATION REQUEST message. Alternatively, or additionally, UE 110 may not include the Unavailability period duration IE in the REGISTRATION REQUEST message. Alternatively, or additionally, UE 110 may initiate the registration procedure for initial registration only if UE 110 can determine, based on its implementation, that there is enough time to complete the procedure before the start of the unavailability period.
[0022] Under the proposed scheme, in case that UE 110 sets the CLI bit to "Coverage loss due to discontinuous coverage" in the 5GS update type IE of the REGISTRATION REQUEST message, then: (a) if the AMF of wireless network 120 is able to determine a UE out-of-coverage period based on satellite coverage availability information, the AMF may store the determined unavailability period duration and provide an expected unavailability duration to UE 110 in a REGISTRATION ACCEPT message; and / or (b) after sending the REGISTRATION ACCEPT message, the AMF may: (i) consider UE 110 as unreachable until UE 110 registers for a normal service again without providing an unavailability period duration; and / or (ii) release a signaling connection immediately after the completion of the registration procedure.
[0023] The AMF may determine a periodic update timer value based on the stored value of the Unavailability period duration IE. Alternatively, or additionally, the AMF may determine a periodic update timer value based on a network-determined unavailability period duration when the Unavailability period duration IE is not provided by UE 110. In case that UE 110 does not provide the Unavailability period duration IE in the REGISTRATION REQUEST message, the AMF may delete any stored value of the Unavailability period duration IE, if any.
[0024] When UE 110 performs an initial registration to provide the unavailability information; and / or UE 110 includes an unavailability information IE to indicate the type of the unavailability period; and / or UE 110 will be unavailable due to NR satellite access discontinuous coverage, then UE 110 may set the Unavailability type bit to "unavailability due to discontinuous coverage" in the Unavailability information IE. Alternatively, or additionally, UE 110 may initiate the initial registration procedure if UE 110 can determine, based on its implementation, that there is enough time to complete the procedure before the start of the unavailability period.
[0025] Under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure, in case that UE 110 provided the Unavailability information IE in the REGISTRATION REQUEST message during the initial registration, then the AMF may determine the Unavailability period duration value as a value that was provided by UE 110 and / or a value that was determined by the AMF based on satellite coverage availability information. Alternatively, or additionally, the AMF may store the Start of unavailability period value. Alternatively, or additionally, when the time of the Start of unavailability period arrives, the AMF may consider UE 110 as unreachable until UE 110 registers for a normal service again without providing an unavailability information and the Start of unavailability period. Alternatively, or additionally, the AMF may store the received unavailability period duration, if any. Alternatively, or additionally, the AMF may release the signaling connection immediately after the completion of the registration procedure.
[0026] Under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure, in case that UE 110 sets the Unavailability type to "unavailability due to discontinuous coverage" in the Unavailability information IE; and / or UE 110 provides the Unavailability information IE in the REGISTRATION REQUEST message for an initial registration; and / or the AMF is able to determine a UE out-of-coverage period based on satellite coverage availability information; and / or the value of the Unavailability information IE in the REGISTRATION REQUEST message during initial registration, then the AMF may perform certain operations. For instance, the AMF may store the determined unavailability period duration. Alternatively, or additionally, the AMF may provide the expected unavailability duration to UE 110 by including the Unavailability period duration IE in the REGISTRATION ACCEPT message. Alternatively, or additionally, the AMF may determine the Unavailability period duration value as a value that was provided by UE 110. Alternatively, or additionally, the AMF may determine the Unavailability period duration value as A value that was determined by the AMF based on satellite coverage availability information. Alternatively, or additionally, the AMF may store the Start of unavailability period value. Alternatively, or additionally, when the Start of unavailability period starts, the AMF may consider UE 110 as unreachable until UE 110 registers for normal service.
[0027] Under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure, the AMF may determine the periodic registration update timer value based on the stored value of the received unavailability period duration or based on a network determined unavailability period duration when the unavailability period duration is not provided by UE 110. In case that UE 110 does not provide the Unavailability information IE in the REGISTRATION REQUEST message, the AMF may delete any stored value of the Unavailability information IE if exists.
[0028] Under a proposed scheme in accordance with the present disclosure, in case that UE 110 receives the Unavailability configuration IE with a value of the unavailability period duration in the REGISTRATION ACCEPT message, then UE 110 may either: (a) delete a UE-determined value and start using the received value; or (b) discard the received value and use a UE-determined value. In case UE 110 supports discontinuous coverage, the AMF may include the Discontinuous coverage maximum time offset IE in the REGISTRATION ACCEPT message.
[0029] In case that UE 110 receives the Discontinuous coverage maximum time offset IE in the REGISTRATION ACCEPT message, UE 110 may replace any previously received maximum time offset value on the same satellite NG-RAN radio access technology (RAT) type and public land mobile network (PLMN) with the latest received timer value. If for discontinuous coverage the AMF includes Unavailability configuration IE in the REGISTRATION ACCEPT message and sets the End of unavailability report bit to “UE does not need to report end of unavailability” , UE 110 may not be required to initiate the registration procedure for mobility registration update when the unavailability period duration has ended. Furthermore, in those instances where a convention analogous to “at least one of A, B, and C, etc. ” is used, in general such a construction is intended in the sense one having skill in the art would understand the convention, e.g., “a system having at least one of A, B, and C” would include but not be limited to systems that have A alone, B alone, C alone, A and B together, A and C together, B and C together, and / or A, B, and C together, etc. In those instances where a convention analogous to “at least one of A, B, or C, etc. ” is used, in general such a construction is intended in the sense one having skill in the art would understand the convention, e.g., “a system having at least one of A, B, or C” would include but not be limited to systems that have A alone, B alone, C alone, A and B together, A and C together, B and C together, and / or A, B, and C together, etc. It will be further understood by those within the art that virtually any disjunctive word and / or phrase presenting two or more alternative terms, whether in the description, claims, or drawings, should be understood to contemplate the possibilities of including one of the terms, either of the terms, or both terms. For example, the phrase “A or B” will be understood to include the possibilities of “A” or “B” or “A and B. ”
