Abstract
Description
[0001]“Method for the mass transfer in gas-liquid or gas-slurry or vapor-liquid exchanges” DESCRIPTION Processes for the mass transfer have large applications in industry. Since the Rotating Packed Bed device (RPB) was invented, it had been successfully applied in various chemical process, such as distillation, absorption, polymerization and steel-making as it allows a reduction of the installation costs (CAPEX) and of the operational costs (OPEX) and increase in performances. Figure 1 schematically represents a prior-art RPB 1 (for instance known from US 4.283.255), comprising a stationary vessel 4 with a first inlet port 5 connected to a first inlet pipe assembly (not shown in the figure) for introducing a first inlet flow, which exits as the first outlet flow through the first outlet port 6 connected to a first outlet pipe assembly (not shown in the figure). The stationary vessel 4 also comprises a second inlet port 7 connected to a second inlet pipe assembly connected with the interior of the rotor through respective apertures (not shown in the figure) for introducing a second inlet flow, which is released as the second outlet flow through the second outlet port 9 connected to the second outlet assembly and connected with the interior of the rotor 2 through respective apertures (not shown). Within the stationary vessel 4 is housed a rotor 2 connected to a shaft 3 connected to a motor (not shown) for rotation around its longitudinal axis. The rotor 2 comprises a packed bed. In some process cases, the liquid loading in the Rotating Packed Bed (RPB) rotor is low, such that the hydrodynamics of the process are affected. A small liquid load is difficult to evenly distribute on the RPB packing and may cause the creation of dry spots in the packing, effectively reducing the overall performance of apparatus. Several attempts have been made in order to modify the structure of the RPB in order to further improving the efficiency of the processes, but none provided satisfactory results. The prior-art document CN 110 054 246 discloses a rotating packing type carbon removal device for recovering CO2 from a CO2- loaded water flow using an air flow, wherein the recovered CO2-loaded air flow is sent to a gas-liquid separation tank, wherein the flow of CO2 is separated and the recovered water, which is a CO2-lean water flow, is recirculated to the device. The prior-art document US 2018 / 0280871 discloses the partial recycling of a loaded solution (the ion enriched solution 30) obtained from a rotating packed bed device within the same device, wherein the recycling occurs via the same liquid inlet (18 in Figure 4) for introducing the absorption solution. The prior-art document US 11.691.105 discloses an installation of multiple rotating packed bed apparatus units, in which a first unit effects the scrubbing of a gas by a liquid, which is regenerated in the send unit; a recycling of a regenerated liquid from the second unit, depleted in scrubbed components, is discharged and recycled to the first unit. The prior-art document US 2017 / 0157554 discloses an apparatus for absorbing a component from a gas mixture, which includes a first rotating packed bed device connected in series to a second rotating packed bed device to process, respectively, a first gas stream and a second gas stream containing a component, while a liquid absorbent sequentially passes through the first and the second device to absorb the component from the first gas stream and from the second gas stream. According to a particular embodiment of the present invention, there is disclosed a process for the absorption of CO2 from a CO2- loaded gas comprising the method above disclosed. A prior-art process for the absorption of CO2 from a CO2-rich gas is schematically shown in Figure 6. In particular, a CO2-loaded gas f1 is firstly cooled in a cooling section C and then is sent to an Absorption Unit A where the cooled CO2-loaded gas f2 is contacted with a flow of a lean solvent, flowing counter-currently inside the packing. In particular, a CO2-loaded gas 300 is firstly cooled in a cooling section C obtaining a cooled CO2-loaded gas 301, which is sent to the first RPB (RPB1) of the Absorption Unit A, wherein the CO2 is absorbed obtaining a CO2 partially deloaded gas flow 302 and a first CO2-enriched solvent flow 303. The CO2 partially deloaded gas flow 302 is sent to the second RPB (RPB2) of the Absorption Unit A, wherein CO2 is further absorbed obtaining a CO2-deloaded gas flow 306 and a second CO2-enriched solvent flow 305. The second CO2-enriched solvent flow 305 is sent to the first RPB (RPB1) according to the present invention. For the purposes of the present invention, a portion of the first CO2-enriched solvent flow 304 is recycled within the first RPB (RPB1). The first CO2-enriched solvent flow 303 is sent to a stripping unit S thereby obtaining a CO2 flow 307 and a flow of CO2-lean solvent 309, which is sent to the second RPB (RPB2) of the Absorption unit A. A portion of the CO2-lean solvent flow 308 is heated by a reboiler R and recycled to the stripping unit S. With reference to the above embodiment, for the purposes of the present invention, the first CO2-enriched solvent flow 303 comprises a higher concentration of CO2 with respect to the second CO2-rich solvent flow 305. According to an embodiment of the present invention, a RPB according to the above disclosure may also be used as the Stripping Unit. According to a second object, the present invention discloses a RPB device, which improves the gas-liquid or gas-slurry or vapor- liquid exchanges. In particular, the disclosed RPB is the one above disclosed in relation to the process of the invention. According to said embodiment, the lean solvent inlet flow assembly comprises one pipe L1, while a pipe for a mixed solvent L+R is also provided. With “mixed solvent” it is intended a solvent comprising a portion of one or more of: a fresh solvent, a recycled solvent. In a preferred embodiment, the pipe of the lean solvent L1 and the pipe of the mixed solvent L+R are distributed along a diameter d1. In a particular embodiment, the distance to the circular internal wall 441 of at least one of the pipes of the lean solvent L1 and / or of the pipe of the mixed solvent L+R is shorter than the distance from the center O (in other words, they are closer to the circular internal wall 441 than to the center O). For the purposes of the present invention, the lean solvent, the recycled solvent and the mixed solvent are delivered to the packed bed through apertures (not shown in the figures) in the pipes wall facing the circular external wall of the rotor 441. For the purposes of the present invention, the above configurations apply to those applications using a single RPB; accordingly, the term “lean solvent” shall be intended as the fresh solvent and “recycled solvent” shall be intended as the solvent recycled from the same RPB. Alternatively, in those configurations wherein the Absorption Unit comprises a battery of two RPBs comprising a first RPB (RPB1) and a second RPB (RPB2), the term “lean solvent” shall be intended as fresh solvent and the term “recycled solvent” shall be intended as the solvent recycled from the same first RPB (RPB1) and / or from the second RPB (RPB2). Alternatively, in those configurations wherein the Absorption Unit comprises a battery of more than two RPBs (RPBn-1, RPBn, RPBn+1), the term “lean solvent” shall be intended as fresh solvent or a solvent recycled from the preceding RPBs (RPB-1) and the term “recycled solvent” shall be intended as the solvent recycled from the same RPB (RPBn) and / or from the subsequent RPB (RPBn+1). For the purposes of the present invention, a recycle ratio shall be intended as the ratio of the flow rate of the recycled solvent to the lean solvent, expressed as a percentage. On a general basis, the percentage of recycled solvent is at least 1%. According to measurements which were performed to increase the CO2 absorption efficiency, an optimal recycle ratio achieved has been observed between 60% and 100% of lean solvent flowrate. Such results depend on specific operating conditions for the plant (such as CO2 concentration in flue-gas, gas flowrate, etc). Measurements have been carried out according to the ACCSESS project test campaign. An increase in CO2 capture efficiency by using solvent recycling was observed during operation using RPB absorber (Figure 13). During the experiment, the efficiency of CO2 capture from exhaust gas was measured in the RPB apparatus according to the invention. Measurements were carried out for three different gas flows, where in all cases the lean solvent L / G ratio was in the range of 5 to 10 kg / kg. Both the disclosed configuration of the full premixing and the separate distribution of lean and rich liquid in different parts of the packing bed have shown to allow a better utilization of the driving force. As per the specific application of the CO2 absorption, the improvement in the efficiency of the process re-duce the solvent consumption per kilogram of absorbed CO2. Overall, the method of the invention allows a higher operational flexibility. * * *
