[0002] FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0003] The invention relates to a packaging system for producing pouches comprising a water- soluble base film, a water-soluble cover film, and a fluid or powder. More specifically, the packaging system may be used for producing pouches containing a detergent fluid or a detergent powder.

[0004] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0005] The known packaging system has the disadvantage that insufficiently sealed pouches are produced. As a result, fluid or powder may leak from the pouches during the production of the pouches or at a later stage. Leakage from the pouches during production may result in down time of the packaging system in order to allow cleaning operations. Leakage from the pouches at a later stage may lead to a lower customer experience.

[0006] The invention is based on the insight that there is a need in the field of the art for a packaging system which produces adequately sealed pouches in order to avoid or at least reduce the risk of leakage of fluid or powder.

[0008] The invention has the objective to provide an improved, or at least alternative, packaging system for producing pouches comprising a water-soluble base film, a water-soluble cover film, and a fluid or powder.

The conditions of the environment, such as humidity and temperature, may affect the moisture level of the cover film and base film. The cover film and base film are typically stored in the form of rolls of cover film or rolls of base film. The cover film or base film is in practice often unrolled from the film rolls and supplied to the moistening device. The moisture levels of the rolls of cover film or rolls of base film may differ from each other. This may amongst others be caused by the way the film rolls are produced and the conditions under which the film rolls are stored. In addition to this, the moisture levels of sections of the cover film or base film being unrolled from one film roll may differ from each other.

[0017] First moistening condition data of the cover film or base film acquired at a first location upstream of the moistening device by the sensor system provides an indication of the moisture level of the, respectively, cover film or base film supplied to the moistening device. Second moistening condition data of the cover film or base film acquired at a second location downstream of the moistening device by the sensor system provides an indication of the moisture level of said cover film or base film moistened by the moistening device. The cover film device is configured to supply said cover film in a cover film direction along a cover film trajectory and said first location is, for said cover film, in the cover film direction along said cover film trajectory located upstream of the moistening device. The packaging system 1 is configured to produce pouches comprising a water-soluble base film 18, a water-soluble cover film 10, and a fluid or powder 19. In particular, the fluid or powder 19 may be a detergent fluid or detergent powder.

Packaging system (1) for producing pouches comprising a water-soluble base film (18), a water-soluble cover film (10), and a fluid or powder (19), such as a detergent fluid or detergent powder, wherein the packaging system comprises:- multiple moulds (20), each mould (20) having a mould cavity (21) for forming a compartment (22) in said base film, and- a mould conveyor (23) configured to move the moulds in a conveying direction (24) along a mould trajectory, such as an endless mould trajectory, and wherein the moulds are moved along:-- a base film device (26) configured to supply said base film and to position said base film on the moulds,-- a compartment forming device (27) configured to position parts of said base film in the mould cavities to form the compartments in said base film,-- a filling device (28) comprising multiple dispensers (29) to dispense the fluid or powder in the compartments,-- a cover film device (30) configured to supply a water-soluble cover film (10) and to position said cover film on said base film and over the fluid or powder in the compartments in order to form a web of pouches (31) holding the fluid or powder between said base film and said cover film,-- a moistening device (13) configured to moisten the supplied cover film or the supplied base film,-- a control system (14) configured to control the moistening device to moisten said cover film or base film, which control system is operatively coupled to the moistening device, -- a sensor system (32) configured to acquire first moistening condition data of said cover film or base film at a first location (33) upstream of the moistening device and second moistening condition data of said cover film or base film at a second location (34) downstream of the moistening device, which sensor system is operatively coupled to the control system, and wherein:- the control system is configured to control the moistening device to moisten said cover film or base film on basis of the first moistening condition data and the second moistening condition data as received from the sensor system.

2. Packaging system according to claim 1 , wherein the control system is configured to perform at least one calculation on the first moistening condition data and the second moistening condition data.

3. Packaging system according to claim 2, wherein the control system is configured to generate a control command based on said at least one calculation and the moistening device is configured to moisten said cover film or base film according to the control command.

Packaging system according to claim 3, wherein:- the packaging system comprises a tracking system (35) which is operatively coupled to the control system,- the tracking system is configured to register when predetermined sections (36) of said cover film or base film move through the first location and subsequently through the second location,- the control system is configured to relate the first moistening condition data and the second moistening condition data to the predetermined sections of said cover film or base film and to generate the control command by performing for each of the predetermined sections of said cover film or base film said at least one calculation on basis of the first moistening condition data and the second moistening condition data belonging to said predetermined section of said cover film or the base film.

5. Packaging system according to claim 3, wherein the control system is configured to relate the first moistening condition data and the second moistening condition data of said cover film or base film in real-time and to generate the control command by performing calculations on basis of the first moistening condition data and the second moistening condition data belonging to different predetermined sections of said cover film or base film.

Packaging system according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the sensor system comprises:- a first sensor (11) configured to perform first measurements at the first location of said cover film or base film and to provide first moistening condition parameter values forming the first moistening condition data of said cover film or base film before moistening by the moistening device, and- a second sensor (12) configured to perform second measurements at the second location and to provide second moistening condition parameter values forming the second moistening condition data of said cover film or base film after moistening by the moistening device.

Packaging system according to claim 6, wherein:- the first sensor is located at a first sensor distance (37) from said cover film or base film when performing first measurements at the first location of said cover film or base film,- the second sensor is located at a second sensor distance (38) from said cover film or base film when performing second measurements at the second location of said cover film or base film, and- the first sensor distance and the second sensor distance are preferably equal.

Packaging system according to claim 6, wherein:- the first sensor is in contact with said cover film or base film when performing first measurements at the first location of said cover film or base film, and- the second sensor is in contact with said cover film or base film when performing second measurements at the first location of said cover film or base film.

Packaging system according to any one of the claims 6 - 8, wherein:- the base film device comprises a first base film roller configured to guide said base film, which first base film roller is rotatable about a first base film roller rotation axis,- the base film device comprises a second base film roller configured to guide said base film, which second base film roller is rotatable about a second base film roller rotation axis,- the first sensor is a first base sensor, preferably a first base capacitive base sensor, and located on the first base film roller,- the second sensor is a second base sensor, preferably a second base capacitive sensor, and located on the second base film roller,- the sensor system is configured to perform first measurements at the first location of said base film when the first base sensor moves along with said base film during rotation of the first base film roller, and- the sensor system is configured to perform second measurements at the second location of said base film when the second base sensor moves along with said base film during rotation of the second base film roller.

Packaging system according to any one of the claims 6 - 9, wherein:- the cover film device comprises a first cover film roller configured to guide said cover film, which first cover film roller is rotatable about a first cover film roller rotation axis,- the cover film device comprises a second cover film roller configured to guide said cover film, which second cover film roller is rotatable about a second cover film roller rotation axis,- the first sensor is a first cover sensor, preferably a first cover capacitive sensor, and located on the first cover film roller,- the second sensor is a second cover sensor, preferably a second cover capacitive sensor, and located on the second cover film roller,- the sensor system is configured to perform first measurements at the first location of said cover film when the first cover sensor moves along with said cover film during rotation of the first cover film roller, and- the sensor system is configured to perform second measurements at the second location of said cover film when the second cover sensor moves along with said cover film during rotation of the second cover film roller.

11. Packaging system according to any one of the claims 6 - 7, wherein:- the first sensor is a first capacitive sensor positioned along said cover film or base film and directed to the first location, and- the second sensor is a second capacitive sensor positioned along said cover film or base film and directed to the second location, and optionally- said cover film or base film comprises a first film side which is moistened by the moistening device and second film side which is not moistened by the moistening device, wherein the first capacitive sensor and the second capacitive sensor are preferably located at the second film side.

Packaging system according to any one of the claims 6 - 8, wherein:- the first sensor is a first optical sensor positioned along said cover film or base film and directed to the first location, and- the second sensor is a second optical sensor positioned along said cover film or base film and directed to the second location, and optionally- said cover film or base film comprises a first film side which is moistened by the moistening device and a second film side which is not moistened by the moistening device, wherein the first optical sensor and the second optical sensor are preferably located at the first film side.

13. Packaging system according to claim 9, wherein the packaging system comprises a first light source directed to the first location and a second light source directed to the second location.

Packaging system according to any one of the claims 1 - 5, wherein the sensor system comprises a sensor provided on a sensor movement device (41) configured to move thesensor from a first measurement position into a second measurement position, and vice versa, which sensor is configured to perform in the first measurement position first measurements at the first location of said cover film or base film and to provide first moistening condition parameter values forming the first moistening condition data of said cover film or base film before moistening by the moistening device and configured to perform in the second measurement position second measurements at the second location and to provide second moistening condition parameter values forming the second moistening condition data of said cover film or base film after moistening by the moistening device, and wherein the sensor movement device is optionally operatively coupled to the control system, and wherein the control system is optionally configured to control the movement of the sensor by the sensor movement device.

15. Packaging system according to any one of the claims 6 - 11 , wherein the control system is configured to perform at least one calculation on the first moistening condition parameter values and the second moistening condition parameter values to generate the control command.

Packaging system according to any one of the claims 6 - 12, wherein the control system is configured to perform the following calculation to generate the control command:- first moistening condition parameter value minus second moistening condition parameter value, OR- second moistening condition parameter value minus first moistening condition parameter value, OR- first moistening condition parameter value divided by second moistening condition parameter value, OR- second moistening condition parameter value divided by first moistening condition parameter value.

17. Packaging system according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the moistening device is configured to supply a moistening fluid at an adjustable supply rate measured in millilitre (mL) per square meter of said cover film or base film (m2), and the control system is configured to control the supply rate (mL / m2) of said moistening fluid on basis of the first moistening condition data and the second moistening condition data.

Packaging system according to claim 14, wherein the control system is configured to control the moistening device to supply the moistening fluid to said cover film or base film at the supply rate (mL / m2) of between, and including, 1 mL / m2and 100 mL / m2, preferablybetween, and including, 10 mL / m2and 30 mL / m2.

19. Packaging system according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the moistening device comprises a moistening roller (16) being rotatable about a moistening roller rotation axis (43).

20. Packaging system according to claim 19, wherein the moistening device comprises a roller drive (17) configured to rotate the moistening roller around the moistening roller rotation axis at an adjustable rotational speed measured in rounds per minute (RPM), and the control system is configured to control the roller drive and to adjust the rotational speed (RPM) of the moistening roller on basis of the first moistening condition data and the second moistening condition data.

Packaging system according to claim 20, wherein the control system is configured to adjust a relative speed difference between the moistening roller and said cover film or base film at a contact area (44) in which the moistening roller and said cover film or base film make contact, and wherein optionally a roller speed of the moistening roller at the contact area is between, and including, 1 % and 10% higher than a film speed of said cover film or base film at the contact area.

22. Packaging system according to claim 20 or 21 , wherein the cover film device or base film device are configured to move said cover film or base film, respectively, relative to the moistening roller in order to adjust a film contact angle (a) along which the moistening roller is in contact with said cover film or base film.

23. Packaging system according to any one of the claim 20 - 22, wherein the moistening device is configured to move the moistening roller relative to said cover film or base film in order to adjust a film contact angle (a) along which the moistening roller is in contact with said cover film or base film.

24. Packaging system according to claim 23, wherein the moistening device comprises a moistening roller movement device (62) configured to move the moistening roller relative to said cover film or base film in order to adjust the film contact angle (a).

25. Packaging system according to claim 25, wherein the moistening roller movement device (62) is operatively coupled to the control system, and the control system is configured to control the movement of the moistening roller by the movement device (62), preferably inorder to adjust the film contact angle (a) on basis of the first moistening condition data and the second moistening condition data.

26. Packaging system according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the packaging system comprises an adjustable moistening fluid supply (15) configured to supply moistening fluid to the moistening device and operatively coupled to the control system, and wherein the control system is configured to control the moistening fluid supply and to adjust the amount of moistening fluid supplied to the moistening device on basis of the first moistening condition data and the second moistening condition data.

27. Packaging system according to claim 26 and in combination with claim 19, wherein:- the moistening fluid supply comprises a slot-die head positioned adjacent to the moistening roller, and- the slot-die head is configured to supply moistening fluid to the moistening roller.

28. Packaging system according to claim 27, wherein the moistening roller comprises an outer moistening surface configured to contact said cover film or base film and the slot-die head comprises a fluid discharge opening located adjacent to the outer moistening surface.

29. Packaging system according to claim 28, wherein the fluid discharge opening has an elongated form, preferably an elongated rectangle, and the fluid discharge opening extends parallel to the moistening roller rotation axis.

30. Packaging system according to claim 28 or 29, wherein the fluid slot-die head and the moistening roller are configured to maintain a constant distance between the fluid discharge opening and the outer moistening surface during rotation of the moistening roller around the moistening roller rotation axis.

31. Packaging system according to any one of the claims 28 - 30, wherein the fluid discharge opening extends horizontally.

32. Packaging system according to any one of the claims 19 - 31, wherein the moistening roller rotation axis extends horizontally.

33. Packaging system according to any one of the claims 27 - 32, wherein the slot-die head is configured to supply moistening fluid in vertical direction to the moistening roller.

34. Packaging system according to claim 26 and in combination with claim 19, wherein:- the moistening fluid supply comprises a spray head directed to the moistening roller, and- the spray head is configured to supply moistening fluid to the moistening roller.

35. Packaging system according to claim 34, wherein the moistening roller comprises an outer moistening surface configured to contact said cover film or base film and the spray head comprises nozzle openings directed to the outer moistening surface.

36. Packaging system according to claim 35, wherein the nozzle openings are aligned and the aligned nozzle openings together extend parallel to the moistening roller rotation axis.

37. Packaging system according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the packaging system comprises a first moistening device configured to moisten said cover film and a second moistening device configured to moisten said base film.

38. Method for producing pouches comprising a water-soluble base film, a water-soluble cover film, and a fluid or powder, such as a detergent fluid or detergent powder, wherein the method comprises:- moving multiple moulds in a conveying direction along a mould trajectory, such as an endless mould trajectory, wherein each mould has a mould cavity for forming a compartment in said base film,- positioning the base film on the moulds,- positioning parts of said base film in the mould cavities to form the compartments in said base film,- dispensing the fluid or powder in the compartments,- moistening said cover film or base film with a moistening device,- positioning said cover film on said base film and over the fluid or powder in the compartments in order to form a web of pouches holding the fluid or powder between said base film and said cover film,- acquiring first moistening condition data of said cover film or base film at a first location upstream of the moistening device and second moistening condition data of said cover film or base film at a second location downstream of the moistening device with a sensor system being operatively coupled to a control system for controlling the moistening device, and- controlling the moistening of said cover film or base film by the moistening device with the control system on basis of the first moistening condition data and the second moistening condition data.

39. Method according to claim 38, wherein the method comprises the step of performing at least one calculation on the first moistening condition data and the second moistening condition data with the control system.

40. Method according to claim 38, wherein the method comprises the step of generating a control command based on said at least one calculation with the control system.

41. Method according to any one of the claims 38 - 40, wherein the method comprises the steps of:- registering when predetermined sections of said cover film or base film move through the first location and subsequently through the second location using a tracking system, wherein the tracking system is operatively coupled to the control system,- relating the first moistening condition data and the second moistening condition data to the predetermined sections of said cover film or base film.

42. Method according to any one of the claims 38 - 40, wherein the method comprises the steps of:- relating the first moistening condition data and the second moistening condition data of said cover film or base film in real-time with the control system,- generating the control command by performing calculations on basis of the first moistening condition data and the second moistening condition data belonging to different predetermined sections of said cover film or base film.

43. Method according to any one of the claims 38 - 42, wherein the method comprises the steps of:- performing first measurements at the first location of said cover film or base film with a first sensor,- providing first moistening condition parameter values forming the first moistening condition data of said cover film or base film before moistening by the moistening device with the first sensor,- performing second measurements at the second location with a second sensor, and- providing second moistening condition parameter values forming the second moistening condition data of said cover film or base film after moistening by the moistening device with the second sensor.
