Description

PROCESS FOR PRODUCING SEBACIC ACID AND SYSTEM FOR RECYCLING HYDROGEN GAS USED THEREOFTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The invention relates to a process for producing sebacic acid. The invention also relates to a system for recycling hydrogen gas used in the process.BACKGROUND

[0002] Aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, especially sebacic acid is an important chemical raw material. For example, sebacic acid is the raw material for producing important industrial products such as nylon, plasticizer and lubricants.

[0003] Currently, sebacic acid is normally prepared by cracking reaction of castor oil or ricinoleic acid under alkaline conditions. The by-products of such cracking reaction comprises hydrogen gas. Hydrogen gas has the advantage of high heat value. However, the safety issue of hydrogen gas hinders its recycling and utilization. For example, the explosion limit of hydrogen gas in air is very broad, which is 4%-75%. Therefore, the recycling and utilization of hydrogen gas face immense safety risk. Under the condition of pressure variation in the pipes, this risk is more severe, because pressure variation may lead to the mixing of air or other oxidizing gas into hydrogen gas stream so as to cause explosion risk.

[0004] Sebacic acid is often produced in batch or semi batch reactors and hydrogen production flow is varying much with time.

[0005] Sebacic acid can also be produced in continuous reactors: during startup or change of production rate, hydrogen production flow is varying.

[0006] In view of the above, currently there is seldom specific and feasible process to recycle and utilize hydrogen gas generated in this type of reaction process. Hydrogen gas is normally discharged along with other by-products or combusted, for example in a torch that is able to tolerate variation in the hydrogen production flow.

[0007] Therefore, there is a need to provide a process and a system allowing safe and reliable recycling and utilization of hydrogen gas generated in the preparation process of sebacic acid, and this process and system make it possible to utilize the high heat value of hydrogen gas, so as to reduce the reliance on external fuel.SUMMARY

[0008] In order to meet the above need, the invention provides a process for producing sebacic acid.

[0009] The inventive process for producing sebacic acid comprises:

[0010] step a) , reacting a reactant derived from castor oil in the presence of alkali in a cracking unit heated by a heating device, which generates a stream A comprising sebacic acid salt and hydrogen gas;

[0011] step b) , subjecting the stream A to separation so as to produce a stream B comprising hydrogen gas and a product stream C comprising the sebacic acid salt, wherein the stream B enters a system for recycling hydrogen gas, the system for recycling hydrogen gas comprising a buffer tank, and the heating device;

[0012] step c) , transferring the stream B into the buffer tank;

[0089] The inventive process and system for recycling hydrogen gas can accomodate flow of hydrogen to be recycled that is varying with time.

[0090] Now, the implementation of the inventive process and system is specifically described in conjunction with figure 1 and figure 2.

[0091] Figure 1 and Figure 2 show, in a non-limiting way, systems for implementing the inventive process, which includes system for recycling hydrogen gas 100 or 100’. The implementation of the inventive process is described below in conjunction with said systems.

[0092] In step a) , a reactant comprising reactant derived from castor oil is subjected to reaction in the presence of alkali in a cracking unit heated by a heating device, which generates a stream A comprising the sebacic acid salt and hydrogen gas.

[0093] In a preferred embodiment, the reaction temperature for step a) could be from 180℃ to 400℃, or preferably 180℃ to 250℃.

[0094] In a preferred embodiment, the reaction pressure is from 0.1 kPa to 1000 kPa above atmospheric pressure. It is found that the risk for external gas (including oxidizing ones) to enter the pipelines in the inventive systems may be increased when the reaction pressure is relatively low.

[0095] In a preferred embodiment, the alkali is chosen from NaOH, LiOH or KOH. In a preferred embodiment, the reactant derived from castor oil is chosen from castor oil, methyl ricinoleate, ricinoleic acid, sodium ricinoleate or potassium ricinoleate.

[0096] In a preferred embodiment, the reaction is conducted in the presence of mineral oil or napthenic oil or carboxylic acids or or phenolic compounds such as phenol, cresol or xylol.

[0097] In step b) , the above described stream A is subjected to separation so as to produce a stream B comprising hydrogen gas and a product stream C comprising sebacic acid salt, wherein the stream B is intended to enter the system for recycling hydrogen gas 100, the system for recycling hydrogen gas 100 comprising a buffer tank 3, and the heating device (for example, the molten salt furnace 5 in figure 1) , and whererin the sebacic acid salt contained in stream C is preferably chosen from lithium sebacate, sodium sebacate or potassium sebacate.

[0098] In a preferred embodiment, step a) and step b) are performed in the same reactor.

[0099] Stream B comprising hydrogen gas also comprises by-products comprising 2-octanol and water, and the by-products are separated out of stream B before step c) by a condensing step using chiller 1 in figure 1.

[0100] Before condensing step or step c) is conducted, the system is flushed by a sub-system for flushing using inert gas. In this embodiment, valves VN and VT are opened and inert gas such as nitrogen gas is used to flush the system for recycling hydrogen gas 100 until the atmosphere of the system for recycling hydrogen gas 100 is replace by nitrogen gas, in which the nitrogen gas is introduced from valve VN and is discharged through valve VT.

[0101] In a first preferred embodiment (figure 1) , the reaction pressure is from 0.1 kPa to 80 kPa above atmospheric pressure. The system for recycling hydrogen gas 100 also comprises a compressor of liquid ring type (for example, the compressor of water ring type 2 in figure 1) .

[0102] Under the condition that nitrogen gas is kept passing through, compressor of water ring type 2 is started, in which the pressure before and after compressor of water ring type 2 is kept steady by the adjustment and control of valves V3, V4 and PIC pressure indicating controller in pressure stabilization controlling system 200.

[0103] Under the condition that cracking unit 6 continues to operate, stream B comprising hydrogen gas is switched from emission / combustion mode into recycling and utilization mode. Specifically, valve V2 on pipe P2 is closed, and valve V1 on pipe P1 is opened, in which the system for recycling hydrogen gas 100 is kept at a positive pressure (i.e., the pressure in the system is greater than the outside pressure) .

[0104] Stream B comprising hydrogen gas enters compressor of water ring type 2. In this process, the pressure before and after compressor of water ring type 2 is kept steady by the adjustment and control of valves V3, V4 and PIC pressure indicating controller in pressure stabilization controlling system 200. Compressor of water ring type 2 increases the pressure of stream B comprising hydrogen gas to be from 30 kPa to 500 kPa above atmospheric pressure and preferably 50 kPa to 300 kPa above atmospheric pressure at the outlet of the compressor.

[0105] The above described keeping the pressure of compressor of water ring type 2 steady is very important for the safety of the system. The invention achieves reliable safety by pressure stabilization controlling system 200 and compressor of water ring type 2. When the open and close status of different pipes is switched, due to instantaneous pressure variation, air or other oxidizing gas may enter the pipe, which would bring safety risk, because the explosion limit of hydrogen gas is very broad. Pressure stabilization controlling system 200 makes it possible to balance the pressure  before and after the compressor of water ring type 2, and compressor of water ring type 2 could effectively reduce the risk of the producing sparks during operation. Therefore, the inventive combination of pressure stabilization controlling system 200 and compressor of water ring type 2 effectively reduces the safety risk.

[0106] In a second embodiment (figure 2) , the reaction pressure is from above 80 kPa to 1000 kPa above atmospheric pressure. The system for recycling hydrogen gas 100 also comprises a pressure stabilization controlling system 200’ comprising a pressure control valve V3’ that is used to control the pressure within the cracking unit 6 and is controlled by PIC pressure indicating controller. The pressure downstream of the pressure control valve V3’ is lower than upstream pressure. The pressure of the stream B before step c) is reduced to 30 kPa to 500 kPa above atmospheric pressure and preferably 50 kPa to 300 kPa above atmospheric pressure by the pressure control valve V3’.

[0107] Under the condition that cracking unit 6 continues to operate, stream B comprising hydrogen gas is switched from emission / combustion mode into recycling and utilization mode. Specifically, valve V2’ on pipe P2’ is closed, and valve V1’ on pipe P1’ is opened, in which the system for recycling hydrogen gas 100 is kept at a positive pressure sufficient to operate the heating device in which the hydrogen is combusted (i.e., the pressure in the system is greater than the outside pressure) .

[0108] In implementing step c) , stream B comprising hydrogen gas enters buffer tank 3. The flow of stream B comprising hydrogen gas going out of the buffer tank 3 can be adjusted by valve V5, so as to make such flow and pressure suitable to combust in the heating device 5.

[0109] In one embodiment, buffer tank 3 is a gasholder with a varying volume. The pressure within buffer tank 3 is preferably kept constant. The volume of tank 3 increases when the flow of incoming stream B from the craking unit 6 is higher than the flow than is injected in the heating device. The volume of tank 3 decreases when the flow of incoming stream B from the craking unit 6 is lower than the flow than is injected in the heating device.

[0110] In one embodiment buffer tank 3 is a tank with fixed volume. In that case the pressure within buffer tank 3 may vary. This pressure increases when the flow of incoming stream B from the craking unit 6 is higher than the flow than is injected in the heating device. This pressure decreases when the flow of incoming stream B from the craking unit 6 is higher than the flow than is injected in the heating device.

[0111] In implementing step d) , stream B comprising hydrogen gas from buffer tank 3 enters water sealing tank 4, and then enters the heating device 5. The outlet of pipe PI entering the water sealing tank 4 is below the water sealing liquid surface and the inlet  of pipe PE exiting the water sealing tank 4 is above the water sealing liquid surface. Buffer tank 3 makes the pressure of the front and rear portion of the system keep steady, and water sealing tank 4 could futher reduce the risk of air or oxidizing gas from outside to enter the system for recycling hydrogen gas 100. Thus, the combination of buffer tank 3 and water sealing tank 4 further improves safety of the system for recycling hydrogen gas 100.

[0112] Stream B comprising hydrogen gas enters the heating device 5 and is combusted. The heating device 5 is a burner thermally coupled to the cracking unit, or the heating device comprises a furnace that heats a heat transfer fluid which heats the cracking unit.

[0113] In heating device 5, external fuel could also be used such as gaseous fuel like natural gas or liquid fuel (not shown in figure 1) . Thus, stream B comprising hydrogen gas at least could replace a portion of the external fuel so as to reduce cost. The heat generated by heating device 5 provide thermal energy to cracking unit 6 so as to keep the cracking reaction to contiously operate.

[0114] The heat transfer fluid is chosen from steam, molten salt or organic heat transfer fluid. The molten salt includes nitrate, for example potassium nitrate.

[0115] There is no special limitation on the number of cracking units 6. For example, multiple cracking units 6 could be used to increase output, for example from 2 to 100 cracking units 6. They are generally installed in parallel.

[0116] When multiple craking units are combined in parallel, each unit has preferably its own step a) and step b) and its own condensor.

[0117] In the case of the first embodiment, each craking unit has its own valves V1 and V2.The streams B comprising hydrogen gas from all craking units are preferably brought together to a single compressor.

[0118] In the case of the second embodiment, each craking unit has its own pressure valve V3’ and valves V1’ and V2’. The streams B comprising hydrogen gas from all craking units are preferably connected together prior to step c.

[0119] In both embodiments, even when multiple craking units are combined in parallel, there is a single buffer tank 3 and if applicable a single water sealing tank 4. There might be a single furnace for all craking units that distribute heat transfer fluid to each craking units. Or a heating device 5 can be installed for each craking unit.

[0120] Moreover, condensate could be recovered from chiller 1, compressor of water ring type 2 and buffer tank 3, said condensate comprising for example water and 2-octanol. Thus, chiller 1, compressor of water ring type 2 and buffer tank 3 may be equipped with pipelines for recovering condensate (not shown in figure 1) .

[0121] In implementing step e) , stream C containing sebacic acid salt is treated to recover sebacic acid.

[0122] In a preferred embodiment, stream C is mixed with a mineral acid such as sulfuric acid or aqueous hydrochloric acid in order to form sebacic acid.

[0123] In a more preferred embodiment, the acidification of stream C is first performed up to a pH of 5-7, then it undergoes separation by decantation, then acidification to pH 1-2 is perform and sebacic acid is separated by solid-liquid separation.

[0124] During the implementation of the invention, the system for recycling hydrogen gas 100 shall be kept at positive pressure.

[0125] In both embodiments, the buffer tank allows to cope with upstream hydrogen flow variations or upstream pressure variations and to deliver a steady flow and pressure of hydrogen to the heating device where hydrogen is combusted. This is key to operate the heating device. In addition, the use of water sealing tank provides additional safety with respect to the pressure variation in the system. Preferably, by using the buffer tank and the water sealing tank in the order and / or the fashion shown above, reliable cycling of hydrogen could be achieved for both embodiments. In a preferred embodiment, the water sealing tank is arranged between the buffer tank and the heating device (such as a furnace) and would prevent possible backfiring from the heating device and igniting the hydrogen in the buffer tank. Thus, in this preferred embodiment, enhanced safety is achieved.

[0126] Regarding the above embodiments and other variations, the invention could achieve safe and reliable recycling and utilization of hydrogen gas and reduce the cost for producing sebacic acid.

[0127] The above embodiments do not constitute any limitation to the invention.

[0128] EXAMPLES

[0129] The following examples further illustrate the invention in a non-limiting way.

[0130] The process and the system for recycling hydrogen gas according to figure 1 and the above embodiments are used to implement the production of sebacic acid.

[0131] Example 1

[0132] 15 cracking units 6.1 to 6.15 are operated in parallel in continuous mode. Each cracking unit is heated by circulation of nitrate molten salt coming from a single furnace 5. The vent of each cracking unit is connected to a condenser 1.1 to 1.15. The line collecting uncondensable gases from each condenser is connected to valves V1.1 to V1.15 and valves V2.1 to V2.15. All valves V1 are connected to a single compressor 2 that is connected to buffer tank 3, water sealing tank 4 and furnace 5. All valves V2 are connected to a torch.

[0133] At startup, the fuel used in the furnace is natural gas. All reactors are heated to  250℃. All valves V1 are closed and all valves V2 are opened. The first 5 cracking units are started. Flows of 166 kg / h of ricinoleic acid (75%purity) , 150 kg / h of aqueous sodium hydroxide and 40 kg / h of phenol are injected on each cracking unit. Temperature within each craking reactor is maintained at 250℃. Pressure within the reactor is 8 kPa above atmospheric pressure. Condensed flow containing water and 2-octanol and uncondensed flow containing hydrogen are collected out of the condenser. Liquid output material from the cracking units are acidified with sulfuric acid in order to form crude sebacid acid.

[0134] During the first hour of operation, uncondensable flows containing hydrogen are sent to the torch. After one hour of operation, uncondensable flow containing hydrogen is sent to compressor 2 through valves V1.1 to V1.5 (opened) and valve V2.1 to V2.5 are closed. Part of natural gas is then substituted by hydrogen.

[0135] Then 5 additionnal craking units are started in the same way. Then the last 5 cracking units are started the same way.

[0136] When steady state with 15 cracking units in operation is reached, total flow rate of the generated hydrogen gas is 140 Nm3 / h. The inlet pressure of compressor of water ring type 2 is 5kPa above atmospheric pressure, and the outlet pressure of compressor of water ring type 2 is 80 kPa above atmospheric pressure. The pressure of buffer tank 3 is 80 kPa. After pressure adjustment, stream B comprising hydrogen gas enters molten salt furnace 5 to be combusted at a pressure of 25 kPa above atmospheric pressure. Under this condition, the flow rate of the natural gas entering molten salt furnace 5 is reduced by 45 Nm3 / h in comparison when all cracking units are in operation and all uncondensable flows containing hydrogen are sent to the torch.

[0137] Example 2

[0138] Example 1 is reproduced with 32 cracking units 6, using cresol in place of phenol. Total flow rate of the generated hydrogen gas when all cracking units are in operation is 300 Nm3 / h. Pressure within the reactor is 5 kPa above atmospheric pressure. The inlet pressure of compressor of water ring type 2 is 1.5 kPa above atmospheric pressure, and the outlet pressure of compressor of water ring type 2 is 98 kPa above atmospheric pressure. The pressure of buffer tank 3 is 98 kPa above atmospheric pressure. After pressure adjustment, stream B comprising hydrogen gas enters molten salt furnace 5 to be combusted at a pressure of 40 kPa above atmospheric pressure. Under this condition, the flow rate of the natural gas entering molten salt furnace 5 is reduced by 100 Nm3 / h in comparison with the reference case in which all 32 cracking units are in operation with all uncondensable gases containing hydrogen are sent to the torch.

[0139] Example 3

[0140] 8 cracking reactors are operated in semi-batch mode. Each cracking reactor is heated by circulation of nitrate molten salt coming from a single furnace 5. The vent of each cracking unit is connected to a condenser 1.1 to 1.8. The lines collecting uncondensable gases from each condenser is connected to valves V1.1 to V1.8 and valves V2.1 to V2.8. All valves V1 are connected to a single compressor 2 that is connected to buffer tank 3, water sealing tank 4 and furnace 5. All valves V2 are connected to torch or the atmosphere.

[0141] In the first reactor heated at 210℃ is loaded with 130 kg of 85%sodium hydroxide. Vent of the condensor is directed through V2.1 valve and V1.1 is closed. Then 130 kg of ricinoleic acid and 70 kg of 2-ethylhexanoic acid were added over 2 hrs. 15 min after the beginning of the addition, vent of the condenser is directed through valve V1.1 (opened) and valve V2.1 is closed. For 2 additional hours a small amount of steam is added sub-surface at 210℃ while 2-octanol is condensed in the condenser and hydrogen is sent to compressor 2 and finally to furnace 5. Then temperature is increased to 320℃ in 2 hours while 2-octanol and hydrogen are evolving. Then, valve 1.1 is closed and a injection of nitrogen in the reactor starts and valve 2.1 is opened. Reactor is cool down to 210℃ then emptied over a 2 hours period. Then a new cycle is started again.

[0142] The other 7 cracking reactors follow the same cycle that last 8 hours. Beginning of the cycle for each of the 8 reactors is organized so that each hour a different reactor starts a new cycle.

[0143] During all the operation, the compressor maintains pressure at its inlet at 2 kPa and pressure at its outlet of 90-100 kPa. Pressure in the reactors are varying from 2 to 6 kPa during the cycle.

[0144] In this manner, hydrogen produced per hour (around 90 Nm3) is stored in buffer tank 3 and sent with a steady flow to the furnace 5 in order to partially replace natural gas.

[0145] When the above examples are implemented, the inventive process and the system for recycling hydrogen gas could maintain effective and safe operation over a long period of time, even when mode switching or stream running direction switching is made. This sufficiently proves that the inventive process and the system for recycling hydrogen gas could safely and reliably recycle and utilize hydrogen gas generated during the reaction process. On basis of safe and reliable recycling and utilization of hydrogen gas, the invention could effectively utilize the high heat value of hydrogen gas, so as to significantly reduce the flow rate of natural gas, lowering the production cost for sebacic acid.
