AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Conventional autothermal reforming (ATR) processes require a fired preheater for hydrocarbon feed preheating, leading to high capital costs, fuel consumption, and inefficient carbon dioxide capture due to low-pressure flue gas emissions.

Method used

An ATR system that uses electrical heating to preheat the hydrocarbon feed, eliminating the need for a fired preheater and enabling complete carbon capture by replacing conventional thermal energy from fossil fuels with renewable or non-fossil based electrical energy.

Benefits of technology

Reduces capital costs, fuel consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions while achieving nearly complete carbon capture by utilizing electrical heating to preheat the hydrocarbon feed, thereby simplifying carbon dioxide capture from the process.

Abstract

An autothermal reformer (ATR) system and process for producing a hydrogen-rich product from a hydrocarbon feed. The ATR system includes: a hydrocarbon feed preheating section arranged to receive the hydrocarbon feed and apply thermal energy from electrical heating to the hydrocarbon feed to produce a preheated hydrocarbon feed; an autothermal reformer unit arranged to receive the preheated hydrocarbon feed and convert it to a syngas product; a shift conversion section arranged to receive the syngas product and convert it to a shifted syngas product; and a hydrogen purification unit arranged to receive the shifted syngas product and convert it to a hydrogen-rich product and an offgas product.
